Green waste free rein By Serena Seyfort

Bursting with things to do

(Shawn Smits)

Green waste disposal restrictions have been lifted in the Macedon Ranges as the region prepares for the peak fire season. While the CFA is encouraging home owners to clear their land before fire restrictions come into effect, Macedon Ranges council has made the task easier for residents. At its meeting last week, the council agreed to lift restrictions on free green waste disposal. Previously residents could dispose of a small trailer load (182 centimetres x 122 centimetres) of green waste for free. The cost for larger loads ranged from $28 up to $303. Councillor Janet Pearce said residents should not have to be out-of-pocket for clearing land. She said many residents had complained they were forced to make multiple trips to the council’s waste stations with smaller loads so they could dispose of them for free. “We want to encourage people to clear areas,” she said. “And if we can discourage people from burning off, that’s also an important aspect.” The changes will be permanent but Cr Pearce encouraged residents to make use of the free service particularly in the lead-up to summer. “We need to be doing it year-round, but especially now.” Hume residents are eligible for up to two free passes a year for waste disposal at council facilities. Mount Macedon group firefighter Mike Dornau also encouraged residents to ensure their properties were fire-ready. “Now is the perfect time,” he said. “Particularly because the weather is being so kind to us at the moment.” Group officer Ian Hay urged people to be aware of local laws for burning off before lighting a fire. He warned people to never leave a burn-off unattended, and to always have water nearby. “Residents must be aware that any fire they light is their responsibility,” Mr Hay said. “All fire has the potential to get away if not controlled properly.” Mr Hay urged residents to register all burn-offs by calling 1800 668 511. “If people register their burn-offs we know what is happening in that area, which is very helpful when brigades are being dispatched to jobs.” Burn-offs are not permitted on less than an acre. For more details on burning off in the Macedon Ranges visit mrsc.vic.gov.au. Hume residents should see hume.gov.au This year’s fire season has not yet been declared but it usually starts in early December.

Get ready for the wine to flow, music to play and food to be passed around. Macedon Ranges locals are busily preparing for the region’s biggest collaborative wine and food festival. More than 30 wineries are participating in this year’s Macedon Ranges Wine and Food Budburst Festival, which will take place on the weekend of Saturday, November 18 and Sunday, November 19. Renata Morello, who owns Lancefield’s Lyons Will Estate with her husband Oliver Rapson, said the couple was eagerly looking forward to the “awesome atmosphere” of the festival. This year marks their third time as part of the festival, but the first time their winery will have the added feature of the recently completed cellar door. Lyons Will Estate will offer tastings of various wines produced and bottled on-site. A $20 festival pass will allow guests entry to the tastings at all participating wineries across Macedon Ranges. Some venues will also offer entertainment. Buses have been organised to transport festival-goers between destinations. Jess Butler, a contestant on this year’s season of Masterchef Masterchef, will host two dinners at Parkside Estate in Lancefield, showcasing local produce and wine from a menu she has designed. By Serena Seyfort Hume’s new mayor is no stranger to the job – he is the first councillor to be sworn in as council leader for the third time. After being elected by fellow councillors, Meadow Valley ward councillor Geoff Porter announced he would establish Hume as “the education precinct”. The school teacher and lifelong Jacana resident said advocating for better education outcomes and youth employment support were at the top of his agenda for the mayoral term.

“If Victoria is the education state, I want to see Hume become the education precinct,” he said. “It’s incredibly important for our community to have access to the infrastructure and services they need to be safe and healthy, as well as access to education and learning.” Cr Porter said he was committed to programs and initiatives that would support local jobs and skills, especially for young people. He also encouraged residents to be proactive about reporting graffiti, dumped rubbish and litter. “Working together we can make a difference,” he said.

Cr Porter will take a year off his teaching job for his term as mayor, as he did during his previous terms in the role in 2009-10 and 2012-13. Aitken Creek ward councillor Carly Moore was elected as deputy mayor. For the coming council term, Jacksons Creek Ward councillors will not hold one of the two leadership positions – Cr Ann Potter was previously deputy mayor. But Cr Porter said he and the entire council were always very aware of the Sunbury area. He said council officers were looking into Sunbury’s infrastructure woes, such as parking.

Victoria’s 32 female mayors have united to speak out against family violence as their record-breaking mayoral terms come to a close. The election of 32 female mayors in 2016-17 – including Macedon Ranges’ Jennifer Anderson – was the highest number of women elected to the job at one time in Victoria’s history. It took the mayoral gender balance in the state’s 79 councils up to a ratio of 40-60. As the election of new mayors unfolds, the women have come together to take a stand against family violence. “We stand united in our concern about the unacceptable level of family violence in our communities and we hear the victims’ voices,” they said in a joint statement. “Raising awareness of gender equity is essential to changing attitudes towards women that can lead to disrespect and violence.” The leaders have called on the wider community to take action on the issue. “This is an issue we need ALL to take a united stand on as a community,” they said The mayors asked female politicians to pledge to take a stand on the issue, and called for male politicians and community leaders to continue to stand beside them. Macedon Ranges council will elect its new mayor for the 2017-18 term at its meeting on Wednesday, November 22.

Diversity win soaks in By Serena Seyfort Sunbury and Macedon Ranges’ water supplier has been celebrated for its diversity. Western Water was honoured as the winner of the diversity category at Hume council’s 2017 Business Awards. Western Water managing director Neil Brennan said the Sunbury-based water corporation had worked hard in recent years to build an inclusive workplace that valued diversity. “We are leaders in the water industry when it

comes to gender equity, with a majority female board, and three women on a seven-person executive team,” he said. Mr Brennan said women comprised 43 per cent of Western Water’s workforce, across the various roles of engineering, plant operation, and business performance. “This is backed by our Diversity and Inclusion Action Plan, which celebrates and supports the diversity of our customer base and workforce,” he said. The water corporation trains staff in positive and professional behaviours, employs

recruitment and selection procedures to encourage diversity and ensures interview panels comprise a gender balance. “We are proud of our diverse workforce and will continue to look for opportunities to improve in this area,” Mr Brennan said. Just as the company received the council award, it was also distributing its own awards. More than 500 primary school pupils competed in Western Water’s poster competition last month. Asher from Gisborne Primary (pictured) took out third place in the grade 1 and 2 category.

Cobaw Community Health will be unable to occupy part of the soon-to-be-vacated Kyneton Primary School site because of time constraints. Cobaw had previously identified a portion of the former primary school site, on Baynton Street, as the preferred location for its new building, but last week announced that the site’s vague timeline had forced this option to be ruled out. The health service said the $9.77 million it received from the Department of Health and Human Services in March to build a new community health facility in Kyneton was subject to a strict timetable. Cobaw said its timeline would not align with the uncertain schedule of the master plan being drawn up for the Kyneton Primary School site. The idea is being explored by Macedon Ranges council and Regional Development Victoria. Cobaw says it will search for a different location for a new purpose-built building, while continuing to engage in the planning process for the primary school site. Cobaw chief executive Margaret McDonald said the process for building the health organisation’s new building would involve community input. More information on opportunities for participation will be released early in 2018. Serena Seyfort

Bruce Mildenhall is once again preparing to take on the RACV Great Victorian Bike Ride in support of Australian veterans. The retired Woodend politician will ride with the team from VetRide – a cycling organisation dedicated to the welfare of the Australian Defence Forces personnel and former personnel – for the fifth time. Mr Mildenhall has not served himself, but rides to support those who have, and to represent the Mount Macedon memorial committee. “I have no personal service record, but my father was a Rat of Tobruk (World War II) and my maternal grandfather was in the first Anzac

Light Horse (World War I),” he said. “VetRide means a lot to me. It’s good to get out and ride with mates while we challenge ourselves in a way that respects the service of the guys who put themselves in harm’s way.” Mr Mildenhall, who helps organise Mount Macedon’s Anzac dawn service, said he had been involved in bike riding since his wife bought him a bike in 2006 when he left Parliament. His favourite local ride is a lap of Hanging Rock – “up Mount Macedon via the easy way”. Serena Seyfort

Safety law flies in for airfield

Donna and Stevie with their winning pies. (Joe Mastroianni)

Pies pass the taste test “I’m a butcher by trade, so we take care to trim the meat and not leave any fat on it,” he said. This year was the first time the Mowatt’s entered the competition, after local customers urged them to take part. The couple moved to Sunbury 14 years ago and have been running their shop for the past two years, as well as raising their four children. Located on Macedon Street, Mowatt’s sells Scottish cuisine, such as haggis, black pudding and sausages, as well as British and Aussie foods.

A new local law to improve the safety of aircraft using Kyneton Airfield is on the way for Macedon Ranges. The law will regulate the height of obstacles on land surrounding the airfield, following concerns about the height of a tree plantation on the site’s northern border. In May, Kyneton Aeroclub vice-president Warren Canning told Star Weekly that the trees were of “immediate concern” and that action was needed. “It’s got to the stage where the situation can no longer be ignored,” Mr Canning said at the time, adding that the height of the trees would soon exceed national safety guidelines, creating the risk of aircraft impacting them, and wind shear being affected. Macedon Ranges council moved to introduce Local Law no.12 at its meeting on October 25, which will regulate Kyneton Airfield and its surrounding land. The council voted to create the new law as the best outcome for immediate and effective protection of the airfield that was consistent with the vision and objectives outlined in the draft Kyneton Airfield master plan. The legal and advertising fees for introducing the law are expected to cost about $10,000. The expected timeframe to prepare and implement the local law is 18 months.

A family business in Sunbury has been recognised nationally for its pies. Foodstore, Mowatt’s, took out a number of medals in the 2017 Official Great Aussie Pie Competition. Competing against bakers from across the country, the small business received a silver award for its chicken balti pie and a bronze award for each of its scotch pie, chunky steak pie and sausage roll. Scotsman Stevie Mowatt, who owns the store with his Welsh wife Donna, said they were thrilled to receive the titles, particularly because neither of the pair were bakers.

Kyneton District Health has been recognised for its outstanding performance. The hospital was awarded the title of the Premier’s Small Health Service of the Year at the Victorian Public Healthcare Awards last week. Kyneton District Health chief executive Maree Cuddihy said she was proud of the hospital’s staff, board and volunteers. “We’ve done a lot of work together in recent years to become an award-winning hospital that our community trusts and is engaged with,” Ms Cuddihy said. “We continue to build on our best care in the little things we do day-in, day-out, and by

not being afraid to innovate and try bold new things.” Since its start in 1854, the hospital has undergone a number of developments, including relocation to a new site on Caroline Chisholm Drive in 2003. Kyneton District Health’s 2017 annual meeting will be held on Thursday, November 16, from 7pm in the hospital’s Ambulatory Care Centre. The meeting is open to the community. Sunbury’s home of optimum eye care and health

PROVIDING EXCELLENT EYE CARE FOR THE LOCAL COMMUNITY

When Joe* came into Sunbury Eye Surgeons, he was concerned and scared. He’d been treated at another clinic with injections in his eye – given for declining sight – and wasn’t happy. Sunbury Eye Surgeons practice manager Brianna Jones says Joe was worried about the pain and adverse reactions he’d experienced. “We put Joe at ease by explaining our every step and gave him time to ask questions,” she says. “As we waited for the 10 or 15 minutes it takes for drops and gel anaesthetic to work, we continued to chat, passing the time and helping Joe to relax further. We built up a rapport, talking about topics we each related to.

Affordable cataract surgery Bulk Bill eye injections

“The next day, Joe called. He wanted to thank us and the ophthalmologist, and say how grateful he was for the hand-holding during the procedure. It made him feel comfortable, he said, and wanting to return.”

Holistic management of glaucoma

This anecdote perhaps embodies best the level of care to be found at Sunbury Eye Surgeons, part of the community’s health care since 2015. Responding quickly to community demand, the clinic has grown in those two years. The high-tech clinic now has four city-trained ophthalmologists and four local clinical staff members, as well as reception staff. A range of ocular services are provided, including cataract surgery, management of retinal disease and glaucoma, and oculoplastic assessments and surgery. “We carry out procedures at the clinic and operate at Sunbury day hospital,” Brianna says. “We also offer a range of diagnostic testing and imaging and laser procedures.

Vivan Nguyen, Dr Christolyn Raj, Dr Michael Chen and practice manager Brianna Jones. (Joe Mastroianni)

“We have a team that’s able to provide optimum care, and we’re well able to cater for all patients who present at the clinic. It’s what we pride ourselves on.” The business has been quick to reach out to the community, eager to forge strong links and to foster confidence in “how we do things”. Various clubs and gardening groups are current beneficiaries and future opportunities to help are always on the agenda.

A big help right now are the bulk-billed intraocular injections and the waiving of laser treatment patient consultation fees from November 1. *Name has been changed Sunbury Eye Surgeons, 11 Neill Street, Sunbury. Opens 9am-5pm weekdays. Inquiries: 9740 9555, email admin@sunburyeyesurgeons.com.au.

Murrindindi, a property of about 4.05 hectares with unimpeded views of “the Mount”, has plenty of lifestyle appeal and is just 10 minutes out of town. The nearly 44-square residence has spotted gum floorboards, three-metre ceilings, wainscoting and subtle period touches. Living areas include a lounge-dining room with fireplace; a theatre room behind double doors; a family-meals space; and a rumpus/games room with bifold doors to the wraparound merbau-decked verandah. The French provincial kitchen has stacks of vinyl-wrap cabinetry, stone benches, top-notch appliances and a walk-in pantry. As well as a study, there are four big bedrooms, the main with sleek en suite and french doors to verandah. A gym leads to an indoor pool. A long list of perks includes five paddocks, menage, a superb dam, enormous shed, triple garage and so much more.

In popular Gumtree Hills estate, known for its leafiness, pretty walking tracks and appealing streetscapes, this fine family house has plenty of appeal. A carpeted lounge room, with roman blinds, has a warm palette of chocolates and taupes, plus a slider to a fitted study – an example of considered zoning, also evidenced by another door closing off the rear living hub. The skylit and timeless timber kitchen has heaps of storage and bench space. Three carpeted bedrooms, each with ceiling fan and roman blinds, share a two-way bathroom and powder room. A terrific covered alfresco area includes a spa, while a pathway heads from there past lawn and gardens to a tranquil pond area. A garage/ workshop has a wood heater and lock-up storage and there’s a double carport. Kismet Primary School is within a 10-minute stroll.

LJ Whorlow First National: 9740 9000 Price: $390,000 – $420,000 Auction: November 12 at 11am

It’s hard to believe this wonderfully secluded property of about 2.83 hectares is within the town boundary and includes great equine infrastructure. The homestead is wrapped by a verandah and nestles within sheltering trees, while lush lawns host gazebo and leafy arbour. At more than 40 squares, the house has living areas galore – lounge-dining; family-meals and atrium; and rumpus with wet bar. The recently revamped kitchen has quality cabinetry (and lots of it) and generous benches, including an island. Along with fitted study, four spacious fitted bedrooms include the main with twin walk-in robes and large dual-basin en suite with tub. Well-fenced paddocks, shelters, stables, tack room, huge shed and workshop, arena and holding yards are among numerous other drawcards.

As fresh as a daisy and just as pretty, this recently revamped house is a cracker for young family or investor. A palette of soft grey, hardwood floorboards in living areas, grey carpets in bedrooms and venetians or tabs on windows combine in modern harmony. Three good-sized bedrooms included the main with built-in and walk-in robes, plus an en suite. The made-over main bathroom sparkles. In an expansive living hub, the streamlined kitchen has subway splashback tiles, stainless-steel dishwasher and electric cooker. A drive-through gabled pergola – above stamped concrete – is great for family gatherings, while out back are a garden shed and another cute outbuilding with glass-slider entry. The block is about 480 square metres and the town centre 2.2 kilometres away.

GISBORNE 34 The Boulevard, 3437 LJ Whorlow: 9740 9000

Price: $500,000 – $525,000

On nearly 900 square metres and a five-minute drive from the village centre, this classic brick veneer will tempt young families looking for high-level presentation and plenty of outdoor space for the kids to run free. And Sankey Reserve and Jackson Creek trails are practically around the corner. Entry is to a foyer, to the left of which is an elegant carpeted lounge room with

large windows admitting northerly light. All windows are dressed in quality drapes and the colour palette is neutral throughout. Timber double sliders from the lounge room open to a carpeted dining area that abuts the tiled kitchen. A brekkie bench for two, ample storage and stainless-steel underbench oven and gas cooktop fit out the light-filled kitchen. A laundry with french-door closet is next door.

The three carpeted bedrooms run down the south side of the house, putting them on the cooler side for summertime sleeps. The large main bedroom has built-in robes – as do the others – and a compact en suite. The main bathroom is original, but is gleaming, and the toilet is separate. A covered alfresco area looks out to a leafy yard on the northern side, while the

opposite side yard is equally roomy and neat. The backyard, rimmed with shrubs, has heaps of space for future projects and a handy shed is also out here. The property has a double garage and there’s access to the backyard from gates each side. Carole Levy

your key to local real estate John Keating

ADVERTISING FEATURE

Trending: Mount Macedon is well known for its impressive gardens, wildlife, mountain ash forest and many more attractions - including the amazing display of colour in autumn seen in every corner of the Macedon Ranges shire.

Managing Director Keatings Real Estate, Woodend John Keating’s family has been in Woodend since 1858, the days when diggers were passing through on their way to the goldfields. More than 90 years later, the Keatings name was first blazoned across the real estate agency that John now owns and directs. Under John’s direction, the agency is not only synonymous with the Macedon Ranges, but also a flagbearer for industry ethics. John has been a tireless campaigner to make auctions more transparent for bidders, actively promoting the 2003 law to ban dummy bidding. In 1984, years ahead of all other agents, he introduced advertised estimated selling prices for auctions – now adopted industry-wide. He continues a campaign to have reserve prices published prior to auction and has appeared on the ABC’s 7.30 Report and other channels to support reform. John’s own debut auction was in 1973, knocking down the winning bid of $74,000 for an 81-acre Kerrie Valley farm against a reserve price of $55,000. His history tells the story of what kind of agent he is: ethical, innovative, community-minded, fair and principled. And the whole Keatings team adopts the same approach. When he’s not immersed in the property industry, John, who is married with four adult children, enjoys overseas travel exploring other cultures.

YOUR SUBURB AT A GLANCE MOUNT MACEDON 3441

It’s certainly a truly wonderful place for tourists to visit who, of course, are extremely envious of the locals who live in such a peaceful and picturesque location. Very little changes on the Mount, and that’s what is loved by the locals. According to REA, as of October 31, 2017, the median price for Mount Macedon was $870,000. Rhys Nuttall, Director RT Edgar Macedon Ranges Market Advice: Who wouldn’t want to live in Mount Macedon? It has privacy and, in some cases, that ‘stepping back in time’ feeling for some of the grand older estates. “A LEVEL PLAYING FIELD” The media is an interesting thing in that reports about bubbles bursting, prices going up or down in Real Estate are constant and at times confusing. The reality is that right now prices in Melbourne are ridiculous and there is no evidence that they will be coming down any time soon. These high prices are pushing prices in Sunbury and the Macedon Ranges up as prospective purchasers seek aff f ordable ff housing- not an easy thing these days. I often hear the words “but if I sell now prices might go up next year!” yes they might, then again prices may also come down. Selling in a high market also means buying in a high market. If prices come down, they will come down everywhere- it is a level playing field!

This is a wonderfully private property and just a short drive from Lancefield with school buses on Bourke & Wills Tr T ack and power connected to the property. The ability to buy and build a wonderful home is here.

Suffice to say that the real estate market is exceptional at the present time and shows absolutely no sign of slowing down. This is a classic time of “demand far outstripping supply” an ideal situation for vendors, not so good for buyers.

Here is your “hide away” from the

Thinking of selling? Do it now! No one has a crystal ball and no one can predict the future. On the whole, real estate is a level playing field- sell high = buy high. Sell low=buy low and one thing remains constant, presentation and price will always have a bearing on the outcome and this is something you can control.

Tigers break drought

SPORT

By Tara Murray

Sunbury stays in the running

Kyneton Tigers broke through for their first win in the Country Basketball League north west competition. Having lost their first three matches, the Tigers easily accounted for Swan Hill Flyers on Saturday night, winning 65-47. Jordan Mangan top-scored with 17 points, while Jacob Plowman had his best scoring night of the season with 12 points. The Tigers backed up on Sunday against the Horsham Hornets, but they weren’t able to repeat the efforts from the night before, as they were smashed 84-47. No Tigers player was able to score double figures with Dylan Tunn top-scoring with eight points. The Tigers sit sixth after four rounds. The women’s side had a mixed weekend with a win and loss. The Tigers got their second win of the season, defeating Swan Hill, 60-44 on Saturday night. Jess Mangan continued her great start to the season with 17 points, while her sister Brooke scored 12 points and Molly Greetham scored 10. On Sunday, the Tigers fell just short of making it a perfect weekend, losing to Horsham Lady Hornets, 61-57. Veteran Michelle Fletcher top-scored with 16 points and was well supported by Adele Rogers and Brooke Mangan in the absence of Jess Mangan who has been the Tigers standout this season. The match was a good test of where the Tigers are at with the Lady Hornets undefeated and on top of the ladder.

Sunbury has put in a strong performance to keep in touch with the top sides in Bowls Victoria Pennant division 1, section 1. Looking to bounce back after a close loss the previous round to Moonee Valley, Sunbury did the job against Fitzroy Victoria with a 93 (16)-68 (2) win. The rink of Todd Trewarne did most of the damage, winning 43-15, with Paul Cullis the standout. After two matches with Sunbury, Trewarne is undefeated. His rink was one of two rinks that scored a rare eight shots off one end. Elise Cowan’s rink scored an eight on the final end to turn a seven-shot deficit into a one-shot win. Mark Cowan’s rink also had a win, while Marc Bullows’ rink suffered its first loss of the season. The win has Sunbury sitting fourth after five rounds. Sunbury’s David Glennon said the win would give the side plenty of confidence. Its only losses have come against the two undefeated sides. “As long as we keep on their coat tails, we should be in the mix,” he said. Meanwhile, Sunbury’s Carla Krizanic has been knocked out in the World Bowls Champion of Champions singles competition in the elimination final in New South Wales. She lost 5-0 in a tie-breaker to Malaysia’s Emma Saroji. Tara Murray

Riley Matricardi scored seven points in Sunday’s loss. (Shawn Smits)

SPORT Junior development a key as Hawks look to the future Woodend-Hesket is keen to build on a promising Riddell District Netball League season. While results show the Hawks won just two games in A-grade this year, there were big steps taken on and off the court across the program. Netball co-ordinator Kellie Duff said the Hawks were thrilled with how far they have come. “From where we were to where we are now, it’s really positive to see how we develop for next season,” she said. “We’ve got a couple of girls coming back and there looks like there will be a real strength of numbers. “We have had great success in our junior program over the last several years and we now have these players feeding through to the senior sides.” Duff said initial interest for next season had been good ahead of netball trials this month. She said one area they expected to see big growth in was the under-19s, which will flow

Woodend-Hesket’s Mackenzie Brown, Madeline and Sarah Staresina, Sarah Duff and Taylah Ranieri with A-grade coach Wendy Roberts. (Damjan Janevski)

through the other teams. Duff said the club’s junior development program was strong and it was starting to flow on at a higher level, with players selected in

Victorian Netball League development squads. “This year our 15s won the division 1 premiership and our 17s and 19s teams only just missed out on a grand final berth by the

Collapse costs Macedon By Tara Murray A middle order collapse has cost Macedon dearly for a second time this season in the Gisborne and District Cricket Association B-grade competition. Looking for its second win of the season, Macedon looked good early on day two against Gisborne. Needing 237 for victory, Macedon was in control at 0-99 with openers Oliver Clough and Pat Trotta looking comfortable. From there it started to go downhill with the lost of frequent wickets. Macedon was soon 4-131, before a partnership between Brendan McGeady and Daniel Trotta settled the side. But it was short-lived, with Macedon all out for 216. Clough top-scored with 47, while Pat Trotta scored 46. Jason McDonald took four wickets for the Dragons. Macedon skipper Nick Dodd said the side had blown a good chance to get a win, which will be crucial come the end of the season. It’s the second time Macedon has had a middle order collapse, following one in game one against Wallan. “We got off to a good start and then stopped,” Dodd said. “Gisborne’s bowlers played well, to their credit. It’s twice it [a collapse] has happened now and it’s something we need to address. “The bowling has been good, but our batting needs addressing.” Dodd said the biggest thing costing them had been shot selection. He said they were hopeful that Brendon Scott and Chris Axton would return to the side for the next game. Both will add more strength to the batting line-up. “Chris is a top order batsman, but might shuffle down the order as we’re content with one through to four. Dodd, in his first season as skipper, said the club was hopeful it would be in the mix come finals. Macedon sits fifth after the first three rounds. It now faces Bacchus Marsh, which is coming off a strong first win against East Sunbury. Dodd said he expects Bacchus Marsh to be one of those teams fighting for a finals spot. Bacchus Marsh’s 303 proved no match for East Sunbury. The Thunder could only make 160 in reply. Eynesbury easily accounted for Kyneton and St Anthonys did the same thing against Ashfield. Wallan’s push for an outright win against Riddell fell just short, but it did take first innings points.

narrowest of margins,” she said. Duff said as well as attracting some new and old players to the club, it looked like most, if not all of this year’s playing group would return. All the coaches from the under-15s through to A-grade, which will again be coached by Wendy Roberts, have re-signed. “It’s a massive plus for us and we didn’t have to advertise,” Duff said. “The coaches said they wanted to return and all the players knew that as well. Wendy will keep developing the girls and she knows the under-19s well as we rotated them through the senior side.” The Hawks will hold netball trials on November 14, 16 and 21 for their under-15 through to A-grade teams. Under-15s and 17s will be held from 4.30pm and under-19s and open grades from 6pm. Registration forms need to be completed by Friday. Details: 0419 535 062 Tara Murray

Sunbury Jets’ youth league women’s side has earned promotion for next year’s Big V season. The side, which won the youth league division 2 title, will play in youth league division 1 next season for the first time. The Jets’ other three sides will all remain in the same division. The championship-winning women’s side will play in the state championship division, the men’s will play in division 1 and the youth league men also in division 1.

EDFL

Former East Sunbury best and fairest winner Kamen Ogilvie is returning to the Essendon District Football League club. Ogilvie, who starred in his time with the Thunder, played in a premiership with Hepburn in the Central Highlands Football League this year. Ogilvie joins a number of players who have re-signed for next season. Jorden Braddy, Callum Lever, Lachlan Brne and Tom Cree are among those to stay at the club.

RDFL

Woodend-Hesket continues to add some midfield depth ahead of next year’s Riddell District Football League season. With new playing coach Tom Carland ready to add some more talent in the middle, the Hawks announced the signings of Dean Bramley and Tom Wilson. Bramley comes to the club from Essendon District Football League club Strathmore, while Wilson was playing for Tungamah, where he was named best on ground in the 2016 grand final.

Cricket

Former Gisborne cricketer Georgia Kerr has been named as emergency for the Cricket Victoria under-18 girls team for the national championships. Kerr, who joined Prahran last season to take her cricket to the next level, started her cricket at the Dragons. She played in both the junior and men’s competition, as well as playing several games for the women’s side over the past few years.

Lions move to re-sign players after losing four stars The Sunbury Lions have announced the first of their new signings, with a number of key players putting pen to paper to stay at the club. The Lions lost four stars at the end of this season, but have since worked hard to re-sign current and new players. Lions’ coach Ben Jordan said they were slowly re-signing most of their playing group. Skipper Andrew Duahu and gun midfielder Alik Magin headline the players staying at Clarke Oval. They are joined by Grant Valles and Alec Goodson, who are expected to play major roles in the Lions forward line, and Dwain Sanderson, Jacob Bygate, Joel and Dean Muir, Nathan Bridgland, Tristan Lenaz, Roger Allen,

Will Healy and Jack Hannett. Lachie Bramble, who is aligned with Williamstown in the VFL, will play with the Lions when available, while Jayden Eales, who had been aligned with Williamstown, will play just for the Lions next season. Jordan said Eales will get a shot at the ruck spot left vacant after David Kovacevic left the club. “He’s very different to Kova,” Jordan said. “He’s still learning the craft and is a good tap ruckman. Hopefully he’ll relish the responsibility.” As well as signing a large part of the playing group, the Lions have added three young stars. Aaron Christensen, a Lions junior player,

returns to the club, while Liam Berry has crossed from Rupertswood. Jordan said both would be massive assets. “Both are local boys and are well known around Sunbury and have a lot of friends at the club,” he said. “Liam had hip surgery this year and didn’t play, but he’s got back to fitness. “Aaron has played at a higher level at VFL and TAC Cup and is fresh from a flag with Macedon.” Jiaya Mitchell, another from Rupertswood, has also joined the club. He took out the 2016 Riddell District Football League under-18.5 best and fairest award. Jordan said they were still talking to a few

more players and expecting a few to step up to try and fill the roles left vacant by Adam Short, Kovacevic, Tom Donoghue and Ben Said. He admits the four players who have left aren’t readily replaceable. “The way we play we have some options to try and fill gaps,” he said. “We didn’t see a lot of Adam this season. Our backline did a remarkable job, led by Tristan Leanz and McDonough, but we would like to get in another key position player. “Tom was really consistent in the middle and there’s a number of guys who will relish a crack at his role.” Tara Murray

Knight shines for Dragons By Tara Murray

A stunning Jakson Knight performance has guided Gisborne to a strong win in the Gisborne and District Cricket Association’s McIntyre Cup. Having made 150 not out in the Dragons innings of 5-306 on day one against Romsey, he then turned destroyer with the ball in the final session of the day. In the space of 60 minutes, Knight bowled 10 overs taking 6-23, equalling the total number of wickets he took last season. Dragons coach Glenn Waites said he had never seen a performance like that before. “In my entire time in cricket, I’ve never seen anyone make 150 and then take six wickets,” he said. “He’s a handy bowler but didn’t bowl much last season as he was managing an injury. Jarryd [Vernon] had been waiting for the right time to bring him on. “It was a great bit of captaincy. “The game was starting to flatline and it brought it back to life.” Knight took Romsey’s last six wickets, to help the Dragons bowl them out for 216. Waites said even before the brilliant spell from Knight, the winless Romsey didn’t look like getting close. “They needed more than five runs an over even before tea,” he said. “There was some really good bowling from our guys.” Damien Devlin top-scored for Romsey with 58. After a slow start to the season, the Dragons have won their past two matches with strong batting and bowling performances. “The week before we chased down the total with one wicket down, before some guys tried to have some batting practice,” Waites said. “This week we made 306 with a lot of contributions and guys making starts. I was talking to Jarryd on the way home and we’ve got bowlers for most situations.” Waites said the mood around the club was very upbeat with no sign of complacency after two straight first and second XI premierships. “People are enjoying their cricket and it’s starting to gel all together. The culture at the club even before I got here is a strong work ethic. “They’re asking me to do extra training sessions. There’s five players out of last season’s team and quite a few out of the seconds, so people want the opportunities. “There’s home-grown youth and a buzz around the club.” In other results, Lancefield got its first win of the season, defeating Sunbury United. Defending 189, the Tigers bowled United out for 170. Samuel Taylor and Matthew Bowden took four wickets each. Rupertswood’s total of 139 wasn’t enough, with Bacchus Marsh making the runs with ease. Woodend got the job done against Sunbury, winning by 38 runs, while a Cameron Moran century guided Riddell to victory against Diggers Rest Bulla. Bacchus Marsh and Riddell both remain unbeaten.

The win by Cameron Austin’s rink wasn’t enough for Romsey. (Shawn Smits)

Gold and Golf stay unbeaten Bacchus Marsh Gold has proven too strong for Romsey in Central Highlands Bowls Division’s top division. Sitting at opposite ends of the ladder after the first two rounds, Romsey faced an uphill task in its bid for a first win for the season. The rinks of Cameron Austin and Daniel Fortune did their part by recording wins for Romsey, but it wasn’t enough. Bacchus Marsh’s Shannon Clements led his rink to a 35-13 win and Phil Minniti’s rink won 28-21 to give Bacchus Marsh a 99 (14)-83 (4) win. Bacchus Marsh Gold is one of two unbeaten sides, with Kyneton Golf maintaining its winning record against Gisborne. Both sides entered the match unbeaten, with Golf coming out on top against last season’s premiers. Ricky and Wayne Turner and Anthony Mathison led winning rinks for Golf, with Sam Boslem’s two-shot win the only winning rink for Gisborne in the 103 (16)-88 (2) result. Lancefield got its first win of the season with a big result against Trentham. The rinks of Aaron Young and Michael Linehan set up the win for Lancefield with wins of 36-9 and 36-11. Trentham won two rinks in the 111 (14)-63 (4) result. Kyneton had an easy win against Bacchus Marsh Blue. Mark Smoljo’s rink won by 25 shots as Kyneton’s three winning rinks all recorded big victories. John Banks led the winning rink for Blue in the 118 (16)-67 (2) result. In division 2, Diggers Rest, Gisborne Red, Kyneton and Woodend had solid wins, while Kyneton Blue, Macedon, Trentham and Kyneton Red got the points in division 3. Jakson Knight starred with both the bat and ball. (Shawn Smits)

Safety and style are the focus of this compact new SUV. The popularity of Subaru’s original XV all-wheel-drive small sports utility vehicle confirmed yet again the brand’s excellent track record in Australia of taking a punt on new segments and making it work. As it did it with the Outback and then the Forester, the introduction of the stylish and capable first-generation XV helped Subaru engage with a whole new audience of younger buyers and budding brand advocates. The latest second-generation high-riding XV – 95 per cent refreshed – is more of the same, but with a more pointed emphasis on driver safety features, potentially adventurous alternatives and value-for-money. And there are more infotainment and style features to engage with the target market. Arguably the best looking of the Subaru range, the XV looks hip enough, helped by some smart new colours. The hero orange colour of the first XV has been replaced by a different, brighter shade called sunshine orange. There are more significant changes than the superficiality of an eye-catching paint job. All variants above the base XV have a standard expanded Eyesight suite of safety features with lane-keeping assist (new to XV) to prevent drifting out of your lane, adaptive cruise control with brake light recognition to alert to dangers ahead, lane departure warning and impact-avoidance pre-collision

The choices of engine and transmission extend to, um, one – an all-new horizontally opposed 2.0-litre four-cylinder of modest 115kW/196Nm outputs and the latest continuously variable transmission (CVT). The engine is new, lighter and now has direct injection. CVTs do cop flak for their strange “slipping clutch, rubber-banding” sensation, which gives some drivers a disturbing disconnection of engine noise from forward progress. But judgment should be based on benefits versus the negatives such as the bizarre gearbox sounds and friction losses. Remember that CVT transmissions were quickly ditched from Formula One as soon as the rule makers got a sniff of a so-equipped 1993 Williams grand prix prototype. The advantages should be obvious – a CVT allows the engine to produce its maximum power at all times without delay. Subaru also points out that it’s impossible to ignore the CVT’s lighter weight, lower cost, simple structure, more compact size, easy servicing and good fuel economy. There are four trim and equipment levels using that clumsy Subaru badging of base 2.0i, mid-rung 2.0i-L, 2.0i-L Premium (which is in essence an L with sunroof and TomTom sat nav) and range-topping 2.0iS. cutting prices across the tiers. The base 2.0i is now $27,990 (plus on-road costs), down from the $29,240 of the old entry model though getting the new-generation touchscreen infotainment, X-Mode, smart key entry, reversing camera, tyre pressure monitoring, seven airbags and 17-inch alloys. The 2.0i-L is listed at $30,340, a cut of $2400 despite added gear including Eyesight, bigger eight-inch touchscreen, dual-zone air, electric folding mirrors, snazzy orange stitching on cloth trim, leather trimmed steering wheel and more. The Premium is $32,140. The well-decked-out 2.0i-S is offered with leather upholstery, supportive heated front seats and a powered driver’s seat (but no lumbar adjust), 18-inch alloys, steering-reactive LED headlamps and other extra safety equipment, but comes in $300 cheaper than the old XV at $35,240. The dual-zone climate control system has been revised with larger air ducting and more outlet modes. This not only improves air flow, but also produces a quieter cabin. The tailgate opening is now wider, allowing for easier accessibility to the cargo storage area which can be expanded to 765-litres by flipping forward the 40/60 split rear seat backs. All XVs have a temporary spare, though it’s an odd 185/65 R17 sizing that looks more robust than most. The latest XV joins Subaru’s entire Australian new car range in securing a top five-star rating for occupant safety from ANCAP. Subaru expects to deliver over 1000 sales a month of XV.
