Put the fun in fundraising Sunbury and Macedon Ranges women will gather for Girls’ Night Ins this month to raise funds and awareness for breast and gynaecological cancers. Gisborne mother Vanessa Harris is organising a Macedon Ranges event as part of the Cancer Council campaign for the second year in a row. “Every year it seems I am having a friend or acquaintance diagnosed with cancer,” the mother-of-two said. Mrs Harris said she felt she couldn’t ease her friends’ battles with cancer, but fundraising was a way she could contribute to fighting the disease. On Friday, October 27, Mrs Harris will host a clothes swap, nibbles, drinks, silent auction and pampering night at Gisborne Business Centre to raise funds for the Cancer Council. Local businesses have donated prizes and products in support of the evening. Last year’s event raised almost $2000 and they hope to raise more this year. To register for the event or to donate, visit: bit.ly/2jXTZHc In Sunbury, Kristine Green is co-ordinating a Girls Night In Fashion Parade on Wednesday, October 11, from 7.30pm at St Mary’s Parish Hall. Police drive cut in crime Additional police officers have been a driving factor behind Sunbury’s 6.1 per cent drop in crime, says Hume inspector Anthony Brown. New Crime Statistics Agency data released last week showed 3009 offences were recorded in Sunbury in the year to June 30, down from 3205 offences in the previous year. Crime in the town has decreased across the board, but drug offences have led the way with a 27.3 per cent drop – down from 253 offences

last year to 184 this year. Inspector Brown said Hume police had received more police officers and introduced a new tasking unit. “We’ve started to receive an influx of additional members across the area,” he said. The municipality of Hume was allocated 38 extra police officers in May. Inspector Brown said 21 of the new officers were already working across the area, with the full contingent expected by the end of the year. He said the new staff had allowed the police unit to do more “targeted tasking”.

“The extra resources have given us the ability to target areas that are hurting us,” Inspector Brown said. “We’ve created a new tasking unit to target identified crime hotspots.” He said the unit, which had been going for two months, had already had “some significant impact”. In Sunbury specifically, Inspector Brown said the police were engaging with transit police to target the train station and bus area. He said police were aware of anti-social

behaviour occurring, particularly from gathering school students, and transit police were going to help provide additional staffing at this spot. In the Macedon Ranges, crime has maintained a steady rate, with a 0.2 per cent decline recorded in the year to June 30, from 2528 to 2524. Drug offences dropped 25.1 per cent, from 203 last year to 152 this year. Statewide, crime decreased 0.6 per cent during the reporting period.

Macedon welcomes new chief By Serena Seyfort Macedon Ranges council’s new chief executive will bring a wealth of experience in the fields of local and state government when she takes up the role on November 13. Margot Stork was officially appointed as Macedon Ranges council’s new chief executive at its meeting last week. Earlier this month, Ms Stork resigned from her former position as the interim general manager (CEO) of Murray River council, which was constituted from the merge of Murray and Wakool councils last year. Ms Stork was awarded the NSW State

Government Ministers’ Award for a Senior Woman in a rural/regional council in March for her work in joining the two councils. She previously worked in the Victorian government’s department of treasury and finance for years, taking up the role of director service and operations from 2009 to February 2014. Ms Stork has qualifications in law, economics, accounting, business management, commercial law, project management and public relations. Macedon Ranges council mayor Jennifer Anderson said Ms Stork impressed the council “with her energy, enthusiasm, qualifications and experience”.

“We are delighted that she has agreed to take up the role and believe that under her guidance the organisation will be well placed to support councillors to achieve agreed outcomes for the community,” Cr Anderson said. Ms Stork said she was “very much looking forward to working with council, councillors and the community”. “To be appointed to this beautiful shire renowned for its unique townships, beautiful landscapes, heritage architecture and vibrant communities is an opportunity that is exciting both professionally and personally,” she said. Ms Stork will take over from the current chief executive Peter Johnson on November 13.

Sports talks over new Hub Consultation with local sporting groups about a future Macedon Ranges Regional Sports Hub is well underway. Project consultants Otium Planning Group, appointed by Macedon Ranges council, last week met with representatives from local sports clubs to discuss a vision for the future indoor sports courts. Macedon Ranges Regional Sports Hub spokesperson Megan Condron said an Indoor Sports Reference Group that included members from local volleyball, netball, futsal, basketball, squash and badminton groups had been meeting with Otium Planning Group. “It’s a work in progress but it’s coming on track,” she said. Ms Condron said the reference group was trying to get more sports, such as dance and calisthenics, involved as well. “We’re too big for [the hub] to just be a tin shed for a couple of sports,” she said. The spokesperson said the group wanted to ensure that the hub would be a facility that the whole Macedon Ranges region could access. Otium Planning Group will continue to meet with stakeholders to develop the shared vision for the hub. The project consultants have been employed by Macedon Ranges council using the $100,000 provided by the federal government for a feasibility study for the regional sports hub. A draft feasibility study is expected to be released for public comment in January or February.

Smoking ban hits the streets By Serena Seyfort Macedon Ranges council has moved to fill “gaps” in state legislation and has banned smoking at venues that serve food and drink on council land. The council adopted its new Smoke Free Outdoor Areas Policy at a meeting last week after the draft policy received only positive public feedback. As of August 1, the state government banned smoking in all outdoor venues where food is served – including privately-owned

beer gardens and balconies. But the state legislation allows venues to designate areas for smoking and drinking only, and gives them the flexibility to change the status of outdoor areas to smoking and non-smoking at different times. Under the new council rules, venues with outdoor spaces only on the footpath will now be forced to become 100 per cent smoke-free. Manager of Gisborne’s The Jolly Miller, Brittany Klaaysen, told Star Weekly during the consultation period in August that the cafe supported a smoking ban.

Ms Klaaysen said the ban would “probably” affect a number of customers, but she hoped it would not deter them from attending the cafe. “We do have a lot of regular customers who come and have a coffee and a smoke outside.” At the same time Woodend’s Bourkies Bakery manager Adam Bourke told Star Weekly he was “all for” a ban on smoking in the bakery’s outside seating area. “It’s not going to hurt you to walk 20 metres around the corner, then come and sit down and have your meal,” Mr Bourke said. “I prefer that people don’t smoke because of the mess it

leaves on the ground and the smell for the other customers.” Many pubs and restaurants will be unaffected by the ban as they have courtyards and beer gardens on private land – they will only be subject to the state laws. In August, the council said its proposed ban would affect an estimated 60 businesses. The report at last week’s meeting stated the policy aimed “to address perceived gaps in the new state legislation by creating smoke free outdoor dining and drinking areas where footpath trading occurs on council land”.

Plenty of senior moments Aquatic and leisure centres across the Macedon Ranges will offer free sessions. Visit mrsc.vic.gov.au/leisure for the schedule. And to get to these celebrations public transport will be free for Seniors Card holders from Sunday, October 8 to Sunday, October 15. Bus campaign gathers speed By Serena Seyfort

Boxing up the Christmas spirit A Sunbury volunteer is encouraging Sunbury and Macedon Ranges residents to help her spread Christmas cheer around the world. For 10 years Errel Gray has been gathering shoe boxes full of supplies to send to disadvantaged children from some of the world’s poorest countries at Christmas time. Ms Gray drives the international relief initiative Operation Christmas Child locally as the Macedon Ranges co-ordinator of Samaritan’s Purse. “It is such a rewarding project,” she said. “Most of the children live on the street and don’t receive Christmas gifts.” Ms Gray said that over the years the project has grown enormously in the area. She said she began sending about 200 boxes and then last year exceeded the 1000 mark. This year she hoped to meet the target of 1200 boxes – but she can’t do it without the community’s help. Anyone interested in helping to spread the Christmas cheer can contribute items such as clothing, school supplies, toiletries, toys and accessories to fill a shoebox, plus $10 to ship the box overseas. The project will run until the end of October. To get involved call Errel on 0423 779 224.

Gisborne residents are campaigning for the Gisbus service to run all day on weekdays. Local group Gisborne Roads and Transport Group has written to the Minister for Transport Jacinta Allan, Macedon MP Mary-Anne Thomas and Macedon Ranges council calling for the extension of the current service. The Gisbus service currently operates during peak-times – running from 5.58-10.22am and from 2.50-7.55pm. Chairman Russell Mowatt said an all-day bus service was needed “to meet the growing population demand of Gisborne”. “In the last 10 years, it’s just gone through the roof,” he said. From 2006-2016, the estimated number of Gisborne residents increased 35.9 per cent, from 9823 to 13,345, according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics. Independent demographic company .id estimates the population will soar to 20,379 residents by 2036. Mr Mowatt said the services would help reduce congestion by encouraging people to visit the township off-peak, and by offering residents an alternative to driving. “Parking is becoming a problem in Gisborne,” he said. “We need a multipurpose approach to transport.” He said the extended service would also better benefit the elderly, families with only one car, and young people. “Elderly people don’t want to go down during the peak period,” he said. The chairman said almost six thousand people were using the Gisbus service each month, and that he believed an off-peak service would definitely be used. Mr Mowatt said the next item on the group’s agenda was to achieve a peak bus service on Saturdays.

Council stays put on off-road ban By Serena Seyfort A controversial ban on using motorised recreational vehicles on land within 500 metres of a house will remain in place, despite a push by some Macedon Ranges councillors to have the local law changed. Councillor Roger Jukes raised a motion at last week’s Macedon Ranges council meeting, urging a review of the current law “with the aim of allowing permit applications to take place”. Cr Jukes said the ban, introduced in 2013,

“was a council decision, not a community decision”. “It’s the community’s right to be able to have the opportunity to apply for a permit,” he said. “I cannot find another council that has such a strong prohibition on this kind of activity – all have the right to apply.” The law primarily relates to the use of trail and quad bikes. Mayor Jennifer Anderson spoke against the motion, saying she was on the last council when the law was introduced. Cr Anderson said she witnessed how the noise levels of the motorised vehicles affected

the mental health of the residents who complained about their use. The mayor said at the time the council sought legal advice as to whether it needed to consult the community to enact the law. “I think it was a really good process, it was a lengthy process,” she said.

The council’s assets and operations director Dale Thornton said the law was introduced following complaints by residents. Cr Andrew Twaits spoke in favour of reviewing the law. “There was no opportunity for people who were going to be adversely affected to make submissions on it,” he said. Cr Jukes, Cr Twaits, Cr Bill West and Cr Henry Bleeck voted to review the law, while Cr Anderson, Cr Helen Radnegde, Cr Janet Pearce and Cr Natasha Gayfer voted against the motion. The mayor’s vote determined the decision. Cr Mandi Mees was absent.

A cuppa for charity Members of the Sunbury community came together on Sunday to support those affected by cancer. St Andrew’s Uniting Church in Sunbury invited the community to join a fundraising morning tea after its weekly service. The event marked the eighth consecutive year the church has raised money for the Cancer Council’s Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea campaign. Organiser of the St Andrew’s morning tea Carole Simpson said the church was proud to support the “very, very good cause”. The Sunbury grandmother encouraged anyone who was unable to attend the fundraiser to donate in support of those who they know are affected by the disease. “It would be great if people could contribute whatever they can to this worthy cause,” Ms Simpson said. All funds raised will be used by the Cancer

Council to support people living with cancer, their families and carers, and research for cancer prevention, detection and treatment. One in two Australians will be diagnosed with cancer by the age of 85, according to the charity. To donate contact Carole on 0427 993 795 or visit www.biggestmorningtea.com.au and search for Carole Simpson’s morning tea. Serena Seyfort

I’m president of Malmsbury Historical Society, I’m chairperson of Kyneton Aged Care, and I’m involved in the Malmsbury Friends of the Gardens and Malmsbury Advance Association. I had two sons and when they went to school, we were heavily involved with the schools. And I worked for many years as the CEO of Sunbury Community Health Centre. How did you come to be involved with the Malmsbury Historical Society? I love Malmsbury – it’s got such a rich history. I’ve always been interested in saving some of the old buildings and keeping alive some of the historical things. I think it’s a gorgeous town. It changes constantly, but it’s retained its village atmosphere. It’s really important to hang on to the things from the past. What do you like about the area? The people are friendly. It’s just a really lovely place to live. Malmsbury Botanic Gardens are fantastic. I walk nearly every morning and it always finishes up with a walk around the lake in the gardens and a coffee at the bakery. If you could change anything about the area, what would it be? The one thing I’d love to happen in Malmsbury is to do with our town hall. It was a gorgeous historical building, and then, in about the ’50s,

we didn’t have a picture theatre so they took the front off the town hall and put a brick facade on it. One day I want to find enough money to restore the town hall to what it used to be. In the photos from before it’s a beautiful old building and I remember it from when I was a kid. Development is a hot topic in the Macedon Ranges – what do you think about the changes in Malmsbury? Malmsbury’s changed a great deal, but it still stays the same. We’ve got lots more people and lots more houses than we had. But then if we go back 100 years, we had 20 pubs, and we’ve only got one now. So things change. Malmsbury was a bustling town in the 1800s and then it gradually declined and now it’s building up again. But it’s the people that make a town. We don’t want a lot of development. We want to retain our village life and the way it was laid out by the people 100 years ago. Do you feel strongly about any other local issues? I live with a female partner of 18 years. In the same-sex marriage survey, of course, I am voting “yes”. But I don’t ever want to force my opinion on anyone else, nor do I wish to argue with people about the issue. I just think that equality in Australia is really important … it’s equality right across the board, whether it’s race, sexuality or gender. Everybody, whether you’re wealthy, whether you’re poor, we’re all equal. And we’ve all got to learn to live together and enjoy each other’s company.

CHICKEN SOUP Also known as “Jewish penicillin” – there are signs chicken soup may work in a similar way to its namesake. Made with chicken stock, the immune healing, antiviral and gut healing properties of the chemical compounds of the chicken bones themselves are only now being understood by the medical world. Protein from chicken specifically provides loads of cysteine – an amino acid chemically similar to drugs that clear mucus. Further, gelatin from the bones stimulates digestion, garlic kills parasites and the vegetables in the soup provide the nutrition you need, and are soft and easy to digest. Make sure to peel them.

PINEAPPLE JUICE Pineapples contain an enzyme called bromelain, an antioxidant that reduces inflammation and kills bacteria. It is claimed it is more effective than cough medicine. Also high in vitamin C, it’s perfect for fighting the head colds of cold and flu. Happy healing! Sam Freestone

APPLE CIDER VINEGAR Apple cider vinegar is a natural antibiotic. The acidity is claimed to promote a good bacterial balance in stomachs and kill off the bad guys. Drink a small amount of apple cider vinegar three times a day when sick, and intermittently during the week for health. EPSOM SALT BATHS Epsom salts slightly suppress the nervous system and are packed with magnesium. Take an epsom salt bath and the magnesium will enter through your skin, the body’s largest organ. ZINC, MAGNESIUM, VITAMINS E AND C - THE BUILDING BLOCKS OF LIFE Magnesium and also zinc and vitamins C and E are, chemically speaking, the building blocks of life. Take a quality multi-vitamin that has all of them. DRY BODY BRUSHING Part of our natural detoxification system is eliminating nasties through our skin. A great help in getting well is to dry brush before getting into the bath or shower. Just use a common loofah. Make sure it is dry and clean. Firmly brush skin in a rotating fashion then thoroughly clean your skin while bathing.

With one third of all audiology practices owned by hearing aid manufacturers, Lilian says it is imperative for people to know if audiologists are independent, otherwise some may be at risk of being sold expensive hearing aids unnecessarily.

“It means we offer a free choice of hearing aids, with no ties to specific manufacturers. “Our advice is unbiased and we provide hearing aid brands that suit lifestyles and budgets. “Being independent also makes us affordable, because we pay no corporate overheads. “We also don’t take a big-city approach where you might see a different audiologist at each appointment. “Our clients will always see the same person. We form friendly relationships and the consistency of services is really valued on both sides.”

Property of the week

GISBORNE SOUTH 15 Blackhill Road, 3437 Brad Teal Gisborne: 5428 2800

Price: Contact agent

This six-hectare property feels so secluded and leafy, it’s hard to believe it’s actually just two minutes’ drive from the Calder Freeway. A true lifestyle place, it comes with a refined rural landscape, and the centre of Gisborne is 10 minutes in one direction and Sunbury 10 minutes in the other. The house – at the centre of green, gently rolling horse, sheep and alpaca country – is terrific for a family, as are the outdoor spaces. Deep verandahs front and back face east and west, while a large covered pergola

is on the south side – options for chasing (or retreating from) the sun when relaxing and entertaining, country-style. Lawns and gardens surrounding the home are matched in pristineness by the production and/or lifestyle sections of the farm. There are eight paddocks (three with shelters), two holding yards abutting two powered stables, two dams, more than 60,000-litres of tank water and a huge Colorbond shed with power. A 36-tree orchard has stone fruit, citrus and mulberry trees, as well as four strawberry beds. A chook run and coop are sheltered by a giant

cypress, and a large, fenced vegie garden includes passionfruit vines and five boxes. Now the feel-good house. It has multiple roomy living zones for spreading out – a big rumpus room/gym with a wood heater, and the blue wall paint seen all through; a carpeted step-down lounge room with a bank of windows facing east and a wood heater against an exposed brick wall (a recurrent feature); and a skylit family-meals area ushered in by multi-paned french doors. The mod-country kitchen has a wide bank of windows behind the sink affording views

to the pergola, as well as panelled cabinetry in cream, a dual-drawer dishwasher, dual wall ovens and induction cooktop. The main bedroom, through double doors, has a built-in four-door robe and an open en suite that reflects the kitchen in decor – as does the main bathroom. Other bedrooms are also fitted and the toilet is off the laundry. Also included are 28 solar panels, alarm, portable electric fencing, ride-on mower and a double carport. Carole Levy

Vendor review from 219 Mitchells Lane

After going through an exhaustive search to appoint an agent we chose Shantelle because we believed that she would get us the best price possible for our home. We had very high expectations and Shantelle was certainly up for the challenge. Shantelle was easy to work with and provided very clear advice to achieve our goal. Shantelle’s expert knowledge of the current market along with the rest of the team at LJ Whorlow First National made selling our home as stress free as possible. Shantelle knows the local trades and businesses to assist with the best possible presentation and has the relationships to make it happen in a timely manner. If you are looking for an agent in Sunbury or surrounding areas then you can’t do better than Shantelle and her team. They work tirelessly, they have the buyers, they know their stuff. If you choose another agent then you are not getting every last cent that you could for your home.

29 SUNBURY & MACEDON RANGES STAR WEEKLY \ OCTOBER 3, 2017

SPORT Young Jet shows she is more than just a rising star A Sunbury Jets young gun was among the big winners at the Big V awards. Having already starred in her’s side youth league women’s division 2 championship win, Chloe Angove was rewarded for her season with two individual awards and being named in the All-Star Five team for her division at the awards night late last month. Angove claimed the top award, the most valuable player, and shared the rising star award with Southern Peninsula’s Shanara Notman for the YLW2 division. Angove averaged 15.64 points and nearly nine rebounds a game this year, along with leading the division in steals. Her field goal percentage for the year was just over 48 per cent. She also claimed the grand final MVP award, averaging 17 points across those two games. Angove said she was shocked by the recognition her season has received.

“It’s a pretty good feeling and I’m pretty happy to get the awards,” she said. “When I was called up I thought all the work throughout the year had paid off.” It’s the second straight year the 19-year-old has been named in the All-Star Five team. Angove said a team focus on improving their game and wanting to claim the championship had helped her own game go to the next level. Last season the Jets were knocked out in the semi finals. “The girls wanted to win and it was bums up and heads down,” she said. “The efforts were heaps higher and the intensity was raised. We definitely wanted to go further this year.” The efforts paid off with the Jets claiming the championship with a 2-0 win against Blackburn Vikings in the grand final series. Angove said it had been an exciting time for the side.

Besides a small break from the sport a few years ago, Angove said basketball has always been her go-to sport. She said she hoped to continue with the sport and see where it took her. Next season she’s hoping to be challenged with the Jets set to be promoted to youth league women division 1. “I’ve been playing for as long as I can remember,” she said. “Once I started it again [after the break], I knew it was the sport I loved. “I would love to keep going and if the opportunities came up and I’d definitely take them. To get as high as I can, that’s the plan for the future.” Jets’ youth league women’s coach Andrew Seidel was also recognised at the Big V awards night. Seidel was named joint coach of the year along with Casey’s Brad Roff for the YLW2 division. Tara Murray

Tiger takes coach of the year award

The honours continue for the Sunbury Jets. (Shawn Smits)

Sunbury’s stellar award By Tara Murray Sunbury Jets Basketball Association has been named the Big V club of the year. The club claimed the honour at the Big V awards late last month, in what turned out to be an exceptional night. Jets’ coaching director and women’s state championship coach Kennedy Kereama said for the club to be recognised, not just for its on court performance but as an association as a whole, was very satisfying. “It is really good to show the hard work of the club … the volunteers, the door staff, the teams, the coaches and the officials,” he said. “It’s certainly nice to see other people recognise what we are doing is really successful. “It’s recognition that direction-wise we are doing some things really well. There are some things we need to work on and improve and we’re not going to rest on our laurels. It was a very big surprise.” The award was just one of several the Jets claimed for the night, with both their state

championship and youth league women’s division 2 championship sides well recognised. Courtney Duever was named the women’s state championship’s most valuable player. Duever, who is playing with the Melbourne Boomers in the Women’s National Basketball League, averaged 22.59 points and nearly 10 rebounds a game for the Jets this year. She had already taken home the grand final MVP, the second straight season she’s won a grand final MVP, having won the division 1 title last season. Kereama said it was a massive honour for Duever. “She’s been a consistent performer all season and came up really big when we needed her in the finals,” he said. Orla O’Reilly, in her first season at the Jets, was named in the All-Star Five team along with Duever. Kereama said in a massive boost for the club, both players had already signed for next year. “Orla has worked out really well for the club,” he said. “Both Courtney and Orla re-signed

30 SUNBURY & MACEDON RANGES STAR WEEKLY \ OCTOBER 3, 2017

two months ago and pretty much our whole team will be back. “Monique [Stevens] has signed, Chelsea [Burns] will sign and Josie [Stockill] wants to come back. “We’ll have open tryouts as well. We’re not having much of a break.” Kereama himself was recognised with the state championship women’s coach of the year. He won the division 1 coach of the year last year. Kereama said any of the nominees for the award would have been worthy winners. “I wasn’t expecting it, but it’s nice recognition,” he said. “I can’t do it without the girls that do the hard work. “I try to put something in place and they make it a success.” Chloe Angove took out the youth league women’s division 2 MVP and the rising star award and was named in the All-Star Five team, while coach Andrew Seidel shared the coach of the year award for that division. Kyle Collins was named in the youth league men’s division 1 All-Star Five team.

Lancefield’s Alan Watson has been named the AFL Goldfields netball coach of the year. Watson, who took the Tigers to the A-grade grand final last month, won the award which is selected from all the coaches across AFL Goldfields’ four leagues. Watson said he was shocked to receive the award. “I’m a little humbled,” he said. “I didn’t really pick up on what was said on the phone when they called me. “They said they were from AFL Goldfields and I’d won something. I thought I had been scammed. “I was absolutely shocked and it’s such a big achievement.” AFL Goldfields netball manager Kim Bailey said Watson was recognised for taking the Tigers top side from seventh last season to a grand final this year. The Tigers lost the grand final to Romsey 56-40. The club’s B and C-grade sides also made finals this year. “He has also given opportunities to local players and some younger girls playing 17 and unders in the junior competition to play at senior level and giving them a pathway from juniors to seniors,” Bailey said. “He has brought a level of professionalism to the club with his trainings and has created an environment of learning and respect for the club.” Watson has been in charge of the Tigers netball program since 2014 and they’ve made huge inroads across all grades. He said it had been a continuous effort to ensure the club continued to improve and that it was a real team effort to get them where they are now. He said they were hoping to go one step better in the A-grade competition next season. “Leanne [Backwell, president] and the committee have been fully supportive of the netball program,” he said. Meanwhile Tigers president Leanne Backwell has been nominated for the Essendon Football Club’s Women’s Network VicHealth Community Award. The award that was due to be presented on Thursday, recognises the contribution of women in football clubs at a community level. Tara Murray

East Sunbury duo Tom Cree and Tom Burnside have been named in the Essendon District Football League division 2 team of the year. Cree was named on the half-back flank, while Burnside, who kicked 34 goals, was named in the forward pocket. Grand finalists Coburg Districts and Jacana had 11 players of the 22, while every club is represented in the team.

By Tara Murray It’s the start of a new era for Ashfield Cricket Club in the Gisborne and District Cricket Association. After a disappointing 2016-17 season which resulted in just five wins across the three teams and none in the top grade, the club is hoping for major improvement this year. There’s a new coach and a new committee with a new outlook. New president Nathan Anderson said they were hoping this year would be a much better year. The club’s top side will again play in the B-grade competition due to an expansion from eight to 10 teams, despite finishing bottom last year. “The previous president had been there eight to 10 years and had decided he had taken the club as far as it could go,” he said. “I felt I had a lot to give and would love the club to have a better outlook. “I’ve been at the club six or seven years and last year was the hardest year we’ve had on and off the field. “Being realistic we didn’t deserve to stay up because of our results. “We want to get that winning feeling and get that vibe back.” In good signs for the future of the club, several younger people have stepped up and taken on roles. Anderson is just 23 and three other committee members are aged 23 or under. Ashfield life member Anthony Travers has returned to the club as coach. Former coach Jason King is back this season after playing just three games last season. King is one of the premier batsmen in the

Jamie Elliott will coach Riddell for a third season, with the Riddell District Football League club announcing last week he had been reappointed. Elliott, reserves coach Craig Rowsell and under-19 coach Heath Wadden will all continue in their roles next season. The Bombers have announced the signing of former Coburg VFL player Dylan Tarczon. Paul Sahlberg, the 2015 Bowen Medallist, and former Bombers premiership player Peter Robertson will return next season.

Sunbury Lions have announced their reserves and under-18.5/under-19 coaches for next season. who has returned to his former club Sunbury United. Young star Corey Woolley and his father Shane, a former Ashfield president, have also made the move to United.
