Graffiti shocks suburb By Dewi Sherry

Melton. A large amount of them were angry about the title of the video: “Melton South most racist town in Australia”. One resident said: “Melton being the most racist city in Australia is a far cry from the truth. “Whilst I don’t condone this pathetic dribble scrawled on our walls, I can understand the sentiment that many in the community are fed up with the … crime wave in this town. But regurgitating the KKK (Klu Klux Klan) and making your little gang on that premise, simply stupid.” Melton City Council’s operations manager Leslie Stokes said the council was “extremely disappointed” by the graffiti at Toolern Creek Reserve. “The graffiti was reported to council on 18 October. A graffiti response team was sent out to begin the clean-up that afternoon,” he said. “The removal of the graffiti was completed on 19 October.”

Police, Melton council and residents have condemned racism in their community after vandals scrawled racial slurs and symbols across walls at Toolern Creek Reserve. The graffiti, which included Nazi symbols and racist comments, was quickly removed by Melton council last week. A video showing the graffiti, titled “Melton South most racist town in Australia”, was uploaded to the Crime Watch Melton Facebook page last week, and immediately sparked widespread condemnation. Melton police Inspector Phil Nash described the graffiti as a criminal act. “Police want any information regarding situations like this, this type of behaviour does not stand. “In regards to the racist wording, it is an offence under the racial discrimination act.” An administrator for the Facebook page, who did not wish to be named, said: “We are extremely disappointed and shocked that such racist graffiti could be painted in Melton. “Melton is a beautiful and inclusive community. To know that there are people with views that support the KKK & Nazis is not only scary, but un-Australian. “Australian and New Zealand forces fought and died defending the world from the Nazi’s in WWII and to express any opinion in support of these groups goes against everything Australians should believe in.” The video was trending on social media and attracted a number of comments from residents all around

Mudder of all races Rhiannon Wilson is on a mission to prove she is tough enough. Ms Wilson has signed up to take part in next weekend’s Tough Mudder event at St Anne’s Winery in Myrniong. It will be the first time she has tackled the course, which sees participants test their mental and physical stamina over a challenging 16-kilometre obstacle course while often deep in mud. Ms Wilson said she signed up to challenge herself. “I recently got into fitness and wanted to do something for myself,” she said. “It was my challenge to myself to see how far I have come.” Tough Mudder is on October 28-29. Melton gets down on dumping By Esther Lauaki Melton council is exploring ways to put a lid on illegal rubbish dumping across the municipality. Council officers are looking to update the waste service to provide more opportunity for residents to get rid of rubbish that could end up dumped on roadsides and in parklands around the area. Special waste collection days, with the consideration of skip bins being supplied on a

rotational basis around Melton, were among the ideas Cr Bob Turner tabled at the October meeting. All residents have a kerbside collection service that includes general waste, recycling and green waste. Hard waste collection is also scheduled on request or alternatively residents can make up to two free visits to Melton Recycling Facility a year. A report from council officers trashed the idea of making skip bins available, stating that

‘‘

- Council report

it would not address the rubbish dumping issue. “The provision of skip bins placed around the municipality on a rotational basis will come at a significant risk and is likely to create or encourage unwanted dumping outside of

the scheduled rotational times,” the report stated. “With respect to the overall volumes of dumped rubbish collected annually, two thirds is reported as construction demolition waste and the majority of collections occur from rural roads. Better use of officers time could be spent implementing solutions that strategically address the broader waste management challenge.” A report on improvements to the waste management strategy will be brought before council at a later date.

A bid to extend the suspension of a well-known horse trainer’s licence was knocked back at the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal earlier this month. Alison Chisholm’s licence was suspended for 12 months by the Harness Racing Victoria (HRV) disciplinary board in May after one of the horses she trained failed a drug test for cobalt after it won the tab.com.au Pace Final at Melton last year. Chisholm pleaded guilty “to presenting a horse for a race not free of prohibited substances” before the disciplinary board. A urine sample collected from the horse, Jimmy The Editor NZ, at Melton on April 16 last year revealed a cobalt concentration above the allowable threshold. The horse was disqualified. HRV stewards called for a review of the decision at VCAT earlier this month saying that the penalty was inadequate and that Chisholm’s suspension should be extended to 15 months – consistent with other cases involving cobalt. Chisholm asked the tribunal to consider that she “did not deliberately or knowingly administer cobalt to the horse … that she had used a commercial product, Dynavyte, on the advice of a veterinarian, not realising it contained cobalt.” VCAT member Elisabeth Wentworth ordered that the 12 month suspension and the disqualification of Jimmy The Editor NZ be upheld.

Council flags parking warnings By Esther Lauaki Drivers could be issued with warning notices for illegally parking in Melton if it is their first offence. Coburn ward councillor Bob Turner moved a motion at last week’s meeting for consideration of more lenient measures for illegal parking, but officers say a review of current processes and procedures would be needed first. The bid to issue warnings for a first-time offence comes amid public criticism about the number of parking fines being issued where

roads upgrades have meant spaces are limited. Earlier this month, dozens of commuters were issued fines of up to $95 for parking illegally at Melton station where there is a parking shortfall because of works. An officers report tabled at the October 16 meeting stated that the council neither has the technology to issue formal warnings at the time of a breach nor a system to record the warnings. “The issuing of infringements is generally a manual-based process,” the report stated. “Regarding enforcement in business areas and

patrolling of timed parking areas, when an officer identifies a breach the infringement is manually entered into an infringement book, and a copy of this infringement is affixed to the windscreen of the vehicle. “In this situation the officer does not have access to technology and cannot identify if it is the vehicle’s first offence.” But council officers said that warnings are already being issued where possible. “In the patrolling of the timed areas, in most cases officers allow extra time before issuing infringements and if a person arrives late to

their vehicle and the parking officer has not written the infringement, the parking officer will speak to that person rather than issuing an infringement,” the report stated. “In areas where infringements are being issued multiples times, officers review the area and work with traffic engineering to either change signs or road conditions to reduce the number of infringements issued. “If it is deemed that issuing infringements in a particular area is unfair, and parking in this area is safe, we stop issuing infringements until the review is complete.”

Kids in wicked display Parkwood Green Primary School pupils are looking forward to turning in sparkling performances when their Journey Through Oz show hits the stage. The school’s pupils – including two casts, with Emma and Ganeev sharing the role of Dorothy – have been toiling away for weeks, rehearsing, perfecting a set of the Emerald City and making props and costumes for the November production. About 400 students are involved in the show. Director Jacqueline Hermina said the show would be full of colour, upbeat tunes and some “intense moments” between the Wicked Witch and Dorothy. “I hope students get the experience of what it is like to work in the theatre professionally,” Ms Hermina said. “All of these students have such talent and it would be wonderful to hopefully see them follow this path and participate in musicals

and plays as they go through their school years. I would also like to think they get involved in local amateur theatre companies. I hope they make friendships with students in other year levels and learn how to work together. “There is so much talent at Parkwood Green Primary school and it is so wonderful that we can showcase it. “I know our audience will be delighted to watch it.” The production will be performed at the Quin Auditorium, Braybrook, on November 1 and 2. Final encore for students Final year art students at Lakeview Senior College are putting their best foot forward with an exhibition at the Caroline Springs Gallery. The exhibition, which launched last week and will run until November 3, showcases the best work of year 12s in art, design and media studies. Head of art Naomi Olthof said the chance to show their hard work was invaluable for the students. “The students selected some of their favourite pieces from their portfolio to show, and it’s of a very high standard,” Ms Olthof said. “It’s the chance for them to have their work hung in a public gallery, and give them that exposure to the community.”

Melton mayor Sophie Ramsay opened the exhibition, titled Encore, last Wednesday in front of 100 fans and family. The exhibition includes film, photography, paintings and more. “Pretty much anything you can think of, we’ve got it,” Ms Olthof said. She said the exhibition was a good chance for students to take stock. “This time of year is all about exams, and the pressure of that, and this a good chance to celebrate our achievements so far,” she said. “They’ve worked really hard to get to this point.” Ewen McRae

Tenants welcome rent reform By Benjamin Millar Renters and tenants rights groups have welcomed state government reforms aimed at rebalancing the housing ledger with landlords. The government announced a package of reforms on Sunday that included a cap on rental bonds, a crackdown on rental bidding, a limit on rent increases to once a year and an end to “no specified reason” evictions. Victoria’s 1.5 million renters will also have the right to keep pets and make minor modifications such as installing picture hooks. Other changes include establishing a

landlord and estate agent blacklist and a new Commissioner for Residential Tenancies. Tenants Victoria said the package was a great start, but the Real Estate Institute of Victoria argued it swung the pendulum too far the other way. Tenants Victoria chief executive Mark O’Brien said it is virtually impossible for

tenants to feel secure in their homes when they can be evicted without proper reason. “The Residential Tenancies Act (RTA) is 20 years old and the holes are showing. It was made for a time when renting was only temporary, not a long-term or lifelong proposition.” However, Real Estate Institute of Victoria chief executive Gil King argued the reforms would significantly imbalance the market in favour of tenants at the expense of “mum and dad” investors. Consumer affairs minister Marlene Kairouz said more people were renting than ever before and for longer.

“These changes will crack down on rental bidding, make it easier and faster for renters to get their bond back, and will better hold landlords and agents to account for their actions,” she said. Renter Margaret Dunleavy said the reforms were well overdue and a welcome recognition of the difficulties faced by tenants. “The most important thing is the ability to make a space your own,” she said. Ms Dunleavy said finding a tenancy that would permit her two greyhounds had been challenging and she had been disheartened by advice to offer to pay more than the advertised rental rate.

Taking great strides Sydenham-Hillside Primary School pupils have been stepping out in this year’s VicHealth Walk to School program. Teacher Henry Nicdao says the initiative helped ease vehicle congestion around the school’s grounds as well as providing health benefits for the students. “It’s been really well received by the wider school community,” Mr Nicdao said. “The kids and parents have embraced the fitness benefits attached to the program and it’s also helped reduce traffic around the school, which has been really noticeable. “We’ve established designated points neighbouring the school, and from those points children are able to walk to the grounds in a safe, supervised environment. Participants also have the chance to win a big screen television, which has generated some excitement, too.” The program is the second in a line of fitness

endeavours the school has participating in, with pupils recently riding two wheels to school instead of being driven in four. “We recently took part in the ride to school month as well, which was part of our endeavours to make our school a more active one,” Mr Nicdao said. “It’s not just students involved – it’s staff and parents, too. “At the end of the day, we’re all about encouraging an active lifestyle and you have to practise what you preach.” The Walk to School program, which was established in 2006, was also supported by Glengala/Sunshine West Primary and St Albans Primary. West’s green zone branches out By Ewen McRae Melbourne’s west is feeling the positive effects of a major tree planting program, according to a new study from RMIT University. The study looked at the Greening the West project which was initiated by City West Water in 2011 with the aim of planting a million trees in Brimbank, Hobsons Bay, Maribyrnong, Melton, Moonee Valley and Wyndham. Lead researcher Casey Furlong, from RMIT’s Centre for Urban Research, said the project represented a major win for residents

facing significant socioeconomic and health disadvantages in comparison to the rest of Melbourne. “These vulnerabilities are compounded by a significant deficit in trees and quality public green space,” Dr Furlong said. “Melbourne’s western suburbs currently have tree canopy coverage of only five to 10 per cent, whereas the rest of Melbourne’s suburbs have between 10 and 30 per cent. “Greening the West has made substantial on-the-ground differences, most notably adding almost one million more trees in and

around Melbourne’s west, and contributed indirectly to increasing the number of street trees through changing local government priorities.” The study noted the addition of these trees could have major environmental, economic and health benefits, including lower mortality rates during heatwaves, better air quality and increased house prices. Brimbank has planted more than 180,000 trees since the program began, and has led the way among the six western councils, according to the study.

On top of the tree planting, Brimbank council has implemented planning scheme changes that require trees in the private gardens of new developments, created an urban forest development strategy and heavily promoted environmental programs through its website. Brimbank mayor John Hedditch said the GTW project was an important part of the council’s long-term environment strategy. “Council is delighted that this important research is raising awareness of the vital work that Brimbank and other partners are carrying out as part of Greening the West,” he said.

Cool cars, great cause Car enthusiasts are getting revved up to raise money for the Royal Children’s Hospital Foundation this weekend. The Street Kred Car Club will host its annual Wheels for Kids Show and Shine meet this Saturday, October 28, in Burnside to raise money for the hospital. Club president Marcos Saffrone said the event, in its fourth year, attracted hundreds of car enthusiasts and had raised thousands for charity. “A lot of us are older and a majority have had children and many have had dealings with the hospital,” Mr Saffrone said. “It’s our way of saying, ‘Thank you’ – and giving back to the hospital. “It’s a huge thank you from the community for what they do for us and our children.” He said that visitors will be treated to a lot of fun and high-octane excitement. “It’s a good family-friendly environment

for everybody, with food and plenty of cars,” Mr Saffrone said. “We’re calling all enthusiasts, no matter what their make and model, to come and support the event for a good cause. “It was a no-brainer for us when we chose the Royal Children’s Hospital Foundation to support.” He said security and police would be in attendance to ensure patron safety at the event. The Wheels for Kids Show and Shine will be held at Burnside Shopping Centre from 7pm-11pm. Entry costs $10. Esther Lauaki

Catholic Regional College Sydenham took out the Premier School’s Cup in soccer. (Supplied)

College kicks a winner By Ewen McRae Catholic Regional College Sydenham sits on top of the school soccer mountain, after taking out the Premier School’s Cup recently. The college – which is also the state futsal champion – won a thrilling tournament in Keilor Park against the best six soccer schools in the state on October 12. The school went through games across the year unbeaten, but needed every bit of resolve to get past Penleigh and Essendon Grammar in

the final, according to coach Andrew Mollica. “We were level with Penleigh and Essendon Grammar after full-time, so we went to extra time and they scored with about two minutes to go. To the boys’ credit they were good enough to get level again and we went on to win 4-3 on penalties,” he said. “It was five matches across the day, so the boys were spent, but it was a great result.” The win was made even sweeter by the fact the college had lost on penalties in the final 12 months earlier.

Mr Mollica said the win gave the college’s already strong soccer reputation a huge boost. “We have two players in this side [Marko Delic and Kristian Bombaci] who already play in Melbourne City’s youth side, and lots of A-League players who have come through our doors,” he said. “I think a win like this does wonders for parents in the local community to see that there is a good soccer program here. “The talent at the school is basically on tap, so we are very lucky.”

A former Melton mayor has been remembered by friends and family as a “kind, man’s man” who loved his community. James McElroy, 66, died on October 8 after a long illness and was farewelled at a service in Melton on October 13. The long-time Melton resident served as shire president from 1989 to 1990 and was the first mayor of the municipality in 1991. He also served as Djerriwarrh Festival chairman. Mr McElroy’s sister Patricia McKenzie told Star Weekly of his great love for the community. “Jim was very sociable and he was the kind of man who got along well with everybody it didn’t matter if you were a celebrity or the local gardener,” Ms McKenzie said. “He and his wife Jacqueline moved to Melton in the 1970s and built their home and raised their children in the area. “He saw things that needed to be done and wanted to be part of that process and that’s why he became involved with the Shire of Melton. “He was the kind of person that … was able to relate to people on their level.” Mr McElroy is survived by children Leigh and Alesha.

The Pasifika Week, lead by the VCAL students, celebrated Samoan, Tongan, Hawaiian and Fijian culture. The recently released Telecommunications Industry Ombudsman’s annual report shows that 399 complaints about internet and phone services were made by Caroline Springs residents in 2016-17. Most of the complaints were about customer service, billing and payments, followed by faults.

Nationally, Campbelltown in New South Wales had the highest number of complaints (769), followed by Toowoomba in Queensland (768) and Hoppers Crossing (752). The ombudsman’s office received more than 158,000 complaints in 2016-17 nationwide – an increase of 41 per cent from the previous 12 months. In the report, Ombudsman Judi Jones states the survey results showed that people were “frustrated” by the internet and mobile phone networks.

“The picture the complaints show is we are frustrated when we cannot rely on technology to stay connected, to be informed, and to do business,” Ms Jones said. “Sharing high-quality videos immediately, holding an online meeting or watching Netflix on the way home is the norm and part of our daily routine.” The report showed that complaints about the NBN were up 10,487 from the year before because of network growth. “Complaints about services delivered over

the national broadband network have more than doubled,” the report stated. “This includes an increase in complaints about connection delays and reliability issues such as faults. The increase is somewhat to be expected given the accelerating rollout of the NBN, but is still a concerning trend.” Meanwhile, Caroline Springs and Burnside will be among the first Australian suburbs to get NBN fibre-to-the-curb connections. Rollout of the service is scheduled to begin in the first half of next year.

Fantasy a new reality A Melton South author’s latest book has woven some magic overseas and was a finalist for an international award. The Wizardess, a fantasy novel by local author Jenny Ealey, received high praise in the international Book Excellence Awards held in Canada. Ealey’s latest project, the fourth and final novel of her Sorcerer’s Oath fantasy series, missed out on top honours but was selected out of hundreds of entries from around the world for its writing, design and market appeal. She said the book was a labour of love created with the help of her sister Wendy, who designed the cover and layout, and her son Burnham Arlidge, who painted the striking image of an eagle for the cover. “I’m so excited to have been named a finalist,” Ealey said. “I started the series eight years ago when I lived in England. “I was working full-time and I would write the books in my spare time … it took me more

than a year to finish each book.” Ealey said writing has been a life-long passion but took a backseat until recently. “When I was in year 12 I wanted to be a writer and my teacher discouraged me from doing it,” Ealey said. “I ended up writing the first novel and didn’t stop. I’ve always liked fantasy, and it’s a lovely genre.” The Wizardess follows the exiled sorcerer prince, Tarkyn, and his followers as they use magic and strategy in a struggle to prevent the country being ripped apart by civil war. The Sorcerer’s Oath fantasy series is available from Melton library and from online booksellers as books and ebooks. Esther Lauaki Author Jenny Ealey’s book The Wizardess has received high praise. NEWS

MY PLACE Veronica Gauci is the director of the Brimbank Multicultural Community Choir and a proud member of Brimbank’s Maltese community. She speaks with Tate Papworth. What is your connection to Brimbank?

keeping with the original idea of the Belonging Choir, I have committed to teaching repertoire in other languages, celebrating the diversity of cultures within the Brimbank community. At last count, the choir sings in over 20 languages.

Until recently, I had lived in Brimbank all my life. I grew up in Deer Park and went to a primary school in the local area. The high school I attended was in West Sunshine. When I married, I continued living in the municipality of Brimbank, residing in St Albans for 28 years. I continue to teach music at a local primary school in Kealba and I am the director of the Brimbank Multicultural Community Choir.

Brimbank has a big Maltese community. Tell us about your involvement in it. I feel it is very important to sing songs in the languages representative of the cultures within the choir. I am an Australian of Maltese decent and my Maltese isn’t great, however I have managed, with the help of others, to teach the choir a couple of traditional Maltese songs. The Maltese community are overwhelmed with pride when we sing songs from their homeland.

What do you like best about the area? What I like most about the area is its array of diverse cultures, and sense of community. Multiculturalism is all around you in Brimbank, from the people, to the restaurants, to the retail outlets and, of course, the community festivals. To me, without a little celebration of the diverse cultures living within our community, life would be quite boring.

(Joe Mastroianni)

Your story will be featured on Channel 31 this Friday. What can audiences expect?

What do you think could be done to improve Brimbank? Children’s parks are lacking in Brimbank. I say this because I brought up three children in St Albans, and in the area where we lived there was only one park and it wasn’t well kept. Tell me about Brimbank Multicultural Community Choir. The choir was derived from a musical theatre project called Belonging that was a collection of stories of migration from different members of the community told through word, song and

visuals. I went along to an open community rehearsal to be part of the choir, dragging my three kids with me. We sang songs in many other languages. These songs were a collection of traditional folk songs collected by the musical director of the show, who went around Brimbank listening to stories and songs … from the Maltese, Chilean, Macedonian, Filipino, Turkish, African and Asian communities. Once the project ended, members of the Belonging

Choir wanted to continue singing these songs in other languages and the Multicultural Choir was formed. We rehearsed at the Hunt Club Community and Arts Centre in Deer Park. Six months in, the director at the time was unable to continue and I assumed the role. I was very sceptical at first, as I hadn’t taught music or singing prior to this, but I took up the opportunity and challenge and have been directing this choir for the past 14 years. In

I will be featured on Maltese DownUnder at 4pm this Sunday, October 29. The show is repeated at other times. Expect to hear a little background on how I began teaching and eventually directing the BMCC. The audience will also hear a little of some members of the choir singing. What would readers be surprised to know about you? I’m in my third year at university, studying for a bachelor of education (primary). I have also taught myself to play the ukulele, which I love … I teach it to the students at the primary school where I teach.

FOOD REVIEW

CONSIDER THE SAUCE Kenny Weir honours a western suburbs pioneer Those of us who love Indian food owe the Dosa Hut crew a big vote of thanks. As far as I am aware, they were the very first to bring dosas to Melbourne’s western suburbs. These days, there are five Dosa Hut branches across Melbourne. But the change that first shop in West Footscray helped initiate extends well beyond dosas and extra branches. It’s taken the best part of a decade, but in that time Indian eating-out in Melbourne has changed dramatically. Not just dosas, but also the likes of idlis and vadas have become common. And it’s not just about those dishes, mostly associated with South Indian food – now Dosa Hut, and their many competitors, do Indo-Chinese, biryanis and sometimes even thalis. I still eat at the original Dosa Hut on occasion – and was definitely interested in trying out their Ramadan specials. These include the grain/pulse/meat dish that is haleem, of which I am not a fan, and a couple of biryanis – lamb shank and “gutti vankaya dum biryani” (eggplant biryani). My eggplant biryani ($13.95) appears at my table looking pretty much like any other biryani. Rice, gravy, raita – but no hardboiled egg. What sets this aside from the norm is that hidden in my rice are to be found two fat, rotund, tender and very tasty eggplants. This dish makes for a nice change from my

DOSA HUT Address: 604 Barkly Street, West Footscray Phone: 8592 4900 DOSA CORNER Address: 587 Barkly Street, West Footscray Phone: 8528 5120 usual biryani order of chicken or lamb, though it is of rather high spiciness. Right across the road at Dosa Corner, they’re also doing haleem for Ramadan. And another dish I am most eager to try – paya ($9.99, roti $2 each). This is a soup/stew made with sheep trotters. There’s not a lot of meat involved, but the flavour is of immense meatiness, along with being tangy and having a nice chilli burn going on. The couple of pieces of sheep trotter? Well, no, not a lot of meat; but, yes, a whole bunch of gelatinous matter. Not, in other words, a cup of tea for everyone, but personally, I love it as something different and delicious. And I reckon anyone with a fondness for equally fiddly and bony chicken feet will feel the same. This updated property sits in a quiet court close to Melton station, Toolern Creek, local shopping, schools and parks. The house has neat rooms with great natural light due to generously proportioned windows throughout. There are three large bedrooms, two with built-in robes and polished hardwood floors, and the bathroom has been renovated and includes a frameless tiled shower. The neat kitchen has plenty of bench and storage space. The living room has more than enough space for the family to spread out and a split-system unit keeps the temperature steady. Set on a large block of about 731 squares, the property has a four-car garage and a double carport. Add in a chlorinated in-ground pool, gas central heating, and a great backyard, and this property is the definition of a good find.

The generous block of about 719 squares opens opportunities for developers (STCA) and investors alike. The house has three bedrooms, a central bathroom with two-way access to the main bedroom and a great backyard. With a wide side-drive, secure fencing and plenty of living space, this propertu, representing some of the earlier developments in the area, is perfectly livable as-is with scope to update at your leisure. The European tree in the backyard is an inspiration for what the backyard could become and there is also a garden shed. Located within walking distance of Woodgrove Shopping Centre, schools, public transport and parkland.

In Botanica Springs estate, this modern house still has its new-shine intact, putting out the welcome mat for new owners. Characteristic of today’s dwellings, this one has an open-plan configuration – with the exception of a carpeted theatre room through double doors. This is clever for families who often want a closed-off space to watch a movie or let the kids play without interrupting the rest of the house.

SPORT Big kicks for teen’s future A taekwondo demonstration at a school fete set Tayla Eckley on a path to glory. Eckley was eight years old at the time and interested enough to try out with City West Taekwondo. One session and she was hooked. Now 16, Eckley is a three-time junior club champion, has represented Victoria on the national stage and Australia on the international stage, and treats the people at City West like an extended family. “When I was little, I went to a school fete and I saw a taekwondo demonstration by City West Taekwondo,” she said. “ I found it really interesting, so I decided I wanted to try it. “Since then I’ve been training with Frank De Pasquale, my head instructor. “Ever since my first lesson … I just felt an instant connection with the sport and the club.” Eckley kick-started her taekwondo career with three junior club champion awards. The Hoppers Crossing resident has won more than 50 gold medals in competitions ranging from club to state to national – and even an Oceania title.

Her biggest achievements came at the Australian Open in 2015, at which she glistened in gold after a stellar performance, and last year, when she brought home gold from the Oceania championships in Fiji. It was that Australian Open victory that confirmed in Eckley’s mind that she belonged in the elite company on the national stage. “After I won that medal, it really helped me realise that I wanted to continue to push myself and to compete,” she said, “and that I wanted to travel and compete at some bigger competitions.” Undoubtedly the high mark of Eckley’s career to date was her gold medal at the Oceania championships. It was the first time Eckley had travelled overseas for competition and she took the event by storm. Eckley, who receives tremendous support from her parents, Lee and Viola, has big goals. She wants to return to the Oceania championships to defend her title. The biggest event on Eckley’s radar is the world championships. Eckley will aim for

2018, but if that does not eventuate, the 2020 worlds will be right in her wheelhouse. Eckley recently returned from this year’s national championships in Bendigo after missing out on gold by “less than one-tenth of a point”. She got to compete in pairs events with club mate James Hird, claiming silver, and with her sister, Keira, taking out bronze. Eckley is the October nominee for the Don Deeble Rising Star award. The award, hosted by the Sunshine Western Region Sports Club and Star Weekly Weekly, recognises youth athletes from the western suburbs who have achieved outstanding results at state and or national levels. Eckley will receive $1000, donated by the Yarraville Club Cricket Club. She will also receive other prizes to assist her in achieving her sports goals.

Melton faces form fight By Tara Murray Melton needs to quickly find some form if it is to remain in touch with the top four sides in Bowls Victoria Pennant’s division 1, section 1. After a first-up win, Melton has dropped its past two games in big losses. On Saturday, it dropped a crucial home game against Sunbury. Sunbury came from one shot down at the break to win 84 (16)-16 (2). Melton secretary John Adams said it was a disappointing day for the side. “We’re not gelling together yet,” he said. “The rink that had been struggling, led by Conrad Dawson, won after losing the first two games. The other three rinks were off, so it was the complete opposite. “We might need to do a bit of tweaking. I don’t know what the selectors will do.” Adding to Melton’s pain, the club’s second side had a terrible weekend and remains winless after three rounds. Adams said the players would need to hit the greens and practise hard. “We’ve still got a couple of players in the pipeline and a couple of players who haven’t played yet. “We need to knuckle down and practise. We need to get into a routine of bowling together – consistency is the name of the game.” One positive for Melton is that the next few weeks are likely to get a bit easier. Melton’s first three matches have come against sides that played finals last year. Adams said he expected Moonee Valley and Sunbury, the two teams to beat Melton, to be in the finals mix. This week Melton faces Essendon (2), which is yet to win a match. “The next few weeks aren’t going to be easy games, but it should start to get better,” Adams said. “If we can win at least three of our four next games, we’ll still be in it. Lose next week and it will get really hard.” Meanwhile, Gisborne’s title defence got off to the perfect start in Central Highlands Bowls division’s top grade by defeating Romsey 108 (14)-90 (4). Kyneton Golf won a thriller against Lancefield 102 (14)-99 (4), while Bacchus Marsh Gold defeated Bacchus Marsh Blue 96 (14)-69 (4). In division 3, Kilmore, Kyneton Red, Gisborne and Macedon won 16-0 against Diggers Rest, Romsey, Trentham and Kyneton Blue respectively. Woodend won after Bacchus Marsh forfeited.

Falcons flop and then fly Caroline Springs experienced a day of twists and turns in its Victorian Turf Cricket Association north A1 clash with Jacana. The Falcons looked to be in early control, cruising at 3-101, before the Jaguars bowled them out for 123. Jackson Mills, who has returned to Caroline Springs this season, top-scored with 41 as only three batsmen reached double figures. Now on the back foot, the Falcons responded with the ball to have the Jaguars 7-70 at stumps. Falcons skipper Kane Sevior said they were in a lot better position than they might have been. “It didn’t look too good at tea,” he said. “There was a lot of wickets … we were fortunate enough to fight back with the ball. We thought if we could get five wickets, we would be a chance. We got seven and it almost puts us in front. It was more than we could hope for.” Sevior, Mujtaba Hussain and Gayashan Weerasekara took two wickets each for the Falcons. Despite the slow start, Sevior, who stood down as coach after last season, said the Falcons remained encouraged by their pre-season. “It’s been the best pre-season in my time at the club,” he said. “Andrew White has come on as head coach and Mick Gale as a training coach. The professionalism side of things has lifted up a level. “Hus [Mujtaba Hussain] is batting at six and is our vice-captain. He’s from Port Melbourne and he’s led on-field and off-field. He’s working with some of the younger players on game style. He sets the standard at training.” Sydenham Hillside has already conceded first-innings points against Moonee Valley. The Sharks were bowled out for 71 in just the 30th over. Moonee Valley was 4-185 at stumps. In west A1, Melton South Royals made 216 against Gellibrand, which will resume at 1-15. Melton Centrals will resume at 0-15 needing 200 for the win against Footscray ANA.

Bowlers steal limelight By Tara Murray The bowlers had a field day at MacPherson Park on Saturday in the Victorian Sub-district Cricket Association north-west clash between Melton and Werribee. Just 133 runs were made on day one, as 12 wickets fell – both teams struggling with the bat. Werribee elected to bat and the Lions dominated from the start, not allowing the Tigers to get any momentum. Just two Tigers players were able to pass seven as they were restricted to 113 – bowled out in the 55th over. Lions coach Nathan Geisler was thrilled with how his bowlers played, as just four of them were needed to get the job done. “It was an interesting day,” he said. “Brad Jones and Ash Sweet had them in trouble and they [Tigers] were always under the pump. “When they [Jones and Sweet] came off, Dylan Clarke and Jake Charge played well and kept the pressure on. It was a slow ground and hard to score on.” Sweet and Jones returned to finish off the job, taking four late wickets between them. Both finished with four wickets each, while Charge and Clarke took one wicket each. The Lions lost Anthony Gale cheaply when they came in to bat. Skipper Ben MacRae fell with three overs left in the day, leaving the Lions 2-20 at stumps. David Kirk, 12 not out, and Dylan Clare, without score, will resume on day two. Having won round one after chasing down a decent run chase, Geisler said he was confident they could do it again. “It’s still game-on,” he said. “One good partnership could be enough to get the win. We know we have eight wickets left and we bat right down to 11. “Everyone can contribute with the bat. It’s nine partnerships of 10 and we get the job done.” Geisler, who has missed the first two games, said he would be back for the next game. “Like last season, I will play more of the shorter form games,” he said. “I’m getting older and it means I can spend more time with the family.” Meanwhile, the women’s side got its first win of the Victorian Premier seconds one-day competition. The Lions made 3-167 from its overs against Brighton District, with Briony Polkinghorne top-scoring with 78 not out. She put on a 142-run partnership with skipper Nicole Martin who made 53 before being run out. The Lions bowled Brighton District out for 136 in the 42nd over. Janelle Hayhurst took four wickets for the Lions.

President’s push to ‘move with the times’ The Central Highlands Bowls Division’s new president said the association needs to continue to move with the times if it is to keep players in the sport. Glenn Arthur, who took on the role in the middle of the year, said it was a defining time for the sport with declining numbers across the board. Arthur, involved with the Bacchus Marsh club, decided to step up to the president’s role to help make a difference. “Since returning from the Ballarat Premier League to the CHBD I have listened to a lot of comments from bowlers of all CHBD clubs about the decisions made by the CHBD committee, the current state of the competition and the future of the CHBD,” he said. “Rather than just listen, I thought I would do something about the issues and so I nominated for the position.” Arthur said player numbers was the biggest concern in the division and the CHBD had started to work on initiatives to try and attract players. It is working closely with Bowls Victoria on some of those ideas. “The CHBD has to realise that we have to move with the times,” he said. “We cannot just keep doing things the way they have always been done. “My aims for the CHBD is to stop the declining numbers in our sport and to see the CHBD grow stronger and to be more competitive against other regions. “This can only happen with a lot more help from members of every club with participation at CHBD committee level, clubs agreeing to common goals and everyone working hard.” The CHBD competition got under way on Saturday. Arthur said the later start would give clubs the same number of rounds before and after the Christmas break. “We used to play nine games before the Christmas break and five games after the break before finals. Due to the different numbers of sides in Division 2 & 3, the finals and grand finals occurred over different weekends. “The clubs voted at the start of last season that this year we start a bit later, play the same number of games before and after Christmas and it allows us to play all division grand finals on the same weekend.” Tara Murray

Demolition job puts Darley in the thick of the action Darley’s bowlers did a demolition job on Napoleons-Sebastopol’s batting line-up on Saturday to seal the Lions’ first win of the Ballarat Cricket Association season. After a below-par performance on day one with the bat, the Lions were hoping for a much better second day. Resuming at 8-92, the Lions didn’t spend long at the crease on Saturday, bowled out for 96. The Lions bowlers were raring to go and didn’t allow Naps-Sebas to settle. Naps-Sebas were 2-37, before the Lions bowlers took 5-2 to have them in real trouble at 7-39. The Lions got the job done quickly, bowling them out for just 69. 52 MELTON & MOORABOOL STAR WEEKLY \ OCTOBER 24, 2017

Lions’ coach Michael Alexander said it was a good result. “It was a great win,” he said. “As a group we thought it wasn’t an ideal score [we made], but it was a slow outfield and a reasonably difficult wicket to bat on. “The bowlers were all fantastic and really disciplined and stuck to the game plan.” Matt Cape, who didn’t play the opening day of the match because he was unavailable, was the star with the ball on day two, taking 6-16 off 14.2 overs which included six maidens. Alexander said it was a risk worth taking. “It’s always a risk and we felt because he can both bat and bowl and has a lot of experience it was worth taking it,” Alexander said.

“It paid off. It was repaying the faith a little bit, but there was no pressure on him.” The win takes the Lions to 1-1 after two rounds, having lost the opener by six runs. A 0-2 record would have been hard to come back from. “It’ll be a hotly contested top four and to lose the first two with only 10 games this season would have been hard,” Alexander said. “We’re not far away from where we need to be, working on moving forward every week.” The Lions still have four players to come into their side over the coming weeks. The side’s number one batsman Lachlan Herring is expected to return this week after missing the first two rounds with injury.

Alexander said they also hoped to have their three Sri Lankan imports available sooner rather than later. “How long is a piece of string?” Alexander said as to when they would be playing. “Everything is in place and we’re just waiting on the all clear from immigration. It could be this week or could be the week after.” Alexander said it was a good sign that even with players missing they were still in the mix in the first two rounds. In even better signs for the depth at the club, the seconds won their first two games. They won two games in total last season. Tara Murray

Burras make a strong declaration of winning ambition Diggers Rest is hoping to take its netball program to the next level following the appointment of Pam Strong as A-grade coach for next season. Strong brings an extensive coaching and playing background to the Burras. She hopes to impart that knowledge on the players. She has been an Australian squad member and a state representative. She’s coached zone academy, underage state teams and Victorian Netball League teams. While she hasn’t coached at the Burras before, Strong is no stranger to the club – her daughter, Shelby Strong, was part of the A-grade side for

the past two years and will continue to play next year. Strong said she was looking forward to the challenge. “I’ve always coached netball, but I haven’t coached football netball before,” she said. “I haven’t coached the last two years due to work and enjoyed the break, but I’m ready to get back into it. I’ve been out there watching the girls and know it’ll be a good challenge.” She said the Burras’ good club environment was one of the reasons she was happy to take on the role. It’s something Strong says can be lacking at higher levels. In a big boost for the Burras, former coach

Amy Carroll will stay on as a player. Carroll, one of the top players in the competition, shared this year’s Ryan Medal as the league’s best and fairest winner. Strong said she was happy to have Carroll focus on her playing. “It takes the pressure off her on the court, especially when it comes to finals,” she said. “I used to coach Amy back in the day at the AIS and I know her well. I’m looking forward to working with her again.” Strong said her aim was to continue building on what Carroll had done in the past two years. The side made finals both years, but was

knocked out in elimination finals, unable to quite match it with the top teams. “The club is heading in the right direction,” Strong said. “I don’t think we need to bring in too many players. We have players coming through our Bs, Cs and under-19s.” The other Burras netball coaches are expected to be named in coming weeks. Strong said all four sides would do a lot of work together. “We’ll all train together and there’s times we’ll train with the footballers,” she said. “We’ll mix everything up.” Tara Murray

By Tara Murray Everything has gone to plan so far for St Anthonys in Gisborne and District Cricket Association B grade. After setting themselves up with a big pre-season, the Saints are delivering in the season proper. A strong first-up win against Gisborne has been backed up over the past two weekends against Riddell. Needing 224 for the win after Riddell scored 7-223 the previous weekend, the Saints had one massive partnership on Saturday that proved to be the difference. While most of the middle and top order struggled, Nathan Dantonio and Wayne Turner, along with the tailenders, ensured the Saints got the job done taking the total to 299. Dantanio made 136, while Turner chipped in with 69. Saints captain-coach Cameron Clayton said a partnership like that was something the side had lacked last season. “When you are chasing 200-plus it’s a decent total,” he said. “If you bat your overs and have wickets in hand, you can chase most totals.

Cricket

Melton’s all-abilities side played its first match on Sunday against St Johns in the Melbourne All Abilities Cricket Association. The Lions made 7-93 with Matt Jackson top-scoring with 27. St Johns made 83 in reply. Brandon Clarke, Andy O’Brien and Matt O’Grady took two wickets each.

Netball

Darley has announced its netball coaches for next year’s Ballarat Football League season. Chris Bandel, who was coaching at Trentham, has been named the A-grade coach, while his wife, Bridget Bandel, will coach B grade. Megan Jackson will coach the C grade side, Jaquie McHenry the D grade team and Courtney Barnes the under-19s.

Western suburbs cricket

Rockbank had a tough day in the Western Suburbs Churches and Community Cricket Association’s AJ (Alf) Murray Shield on Saturday. The Rams, who are fielding just one side this season, were no match for the Western Eagles, who made 9-169 before bowling out Rockbank for 59.

“Nathan has shown glimpses in the practice matches and everything fell into place. “He batted really well with Wayne. Their partnership was really handy.” The win means the Saints are one of three teams to have won both their matches. Clayton said that so far everything was falling into place for the Saints. “Getting early wins are important, to get ahead,” he said. “The guys we have picked up – Justin Siedlecki and Nathan – have taken wickets and made runs. “We’ve had a couple of younger players coming in, too. Everything we set out to achieve on August 7 [in pre-season] has fallen into place.” One of the younger players, Shaun McAndrew, has made his senior debut at the age of 14. Clayton said McAndrew was enjoying his opportunity. “He worked really hard during the pre-season and didn’t miss a session,” he said. “He’s handled it really well and always has a smile on his face.” The Saints have the chance to make it three from three when they play Ashfield, which has split its opening two games. “You never know what you’ll get from Ashfield,” Clayton said. “We need to make sure we keep doing the basics.” Eynesbury made it two from two with a big win against Ashfield. Defending a massive 7-394, the Eagles never looked in trouble, bowling Ashfield out for 189. Tristan Francis was the pick of the bowlers, taking 3-29, as eight Eagles got the chance to roll their arms over. In McIntyre Cup, Diggers Rest Bulla

Holden is very serious about its small-to-medium Astra range. In December 2016 it launched a five-door hatch; a four-door sedan – the subject of this test in topline LTZ format – came out in June this year, and a station wagon will be added to before the end of the year. Sales of the hatch weren’t as high as GM-Holden anticipated and weren’t helped by the traditionally slow January/February holiday AND back-to-school periods. So recommended prices were dropped a few months after the launch to try and kick things along. Astra sedan prices probably started lower than originally anticipated, from $20,490 through to $29,790, putting them right into the thick of the fray in this class. The Astra sedan is built in a GM factory in South Korea. It’s finished to the very high standard that has impressed us in vehicles from that country in recent years. Holden Astra sits on all-new vehicle modular architecture that trims weight by as much as 120kg compared to the old model. This adds performance while at the same time fuel consumption decreases. Infotainment is centred around a colour touchscreen that’s neatly integrated into the stylish dashboard. It uses the latest Holden MyLink system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. There’s a USB input with iPod connectivity. A clever design feature is the thumb rest to steady your hand while reaching the screen with your forefinger. There’s a comprehensive range. The entry level Astra LS has 16-inch alloy wheels, a 7.0-inch colour touchscreen, steering wheel mounted controls, a six speaker audio system and cruise

passive entry, push-button start, advanced park assist, and automatic wipers. The topline Astra LTZ we tested had 18-inch alloy wheels, climate controlled air, an electric sunroof, chromed exterior window surrounds,

chromed interior highlights combined with piano black (the latter, as usual, picking up dust within minutes of it being brushed off…) and heated front seats. The front seats are a good size, and comfortable in normal driving, there’s less side support than you may like if you do hammer it along. Rear seats have space for two adults and they will have enough legroom unless those in the front like their seats well back. A third grown-up can fit without too much hip and shoulder rubbing. Three kids is a more likely load. A new Holden Commodore is coming in the first few months of 2018. Somewhat oddly it won’t be offered as a sedan. People who really want a sedan and who are considering moving down to a smaller car may well find the all-new Astra sedan fills the bill neatly. That is unless they need a back seat suited to kids in the hulking teen stage.
