Cobra strike ends long drought Bacchus Marsh is the king of the Ballarat Football League. In their first grand final in 17 years, the Cobras dismantled the Sunbury Lions, 13.21 (99)-5.14 (44) on Saturday to claim the league’s senior premiership for the first time. ■ Full reports: Page 45

Key talks on extra cops By Sumeyya Ilanbey Victoria Police is highly likely to ask the state government for more frontline members in coming months after senior command conceded police stations in growth suburbs were “stretched”. Chief Commissioner Graham Ashton told radio station 3AW last week it was a “foregone conclusion” that more police were needed, and talks with the state government about funding extra police were “highly likely” in the coming months. Mr Ashton said police command and the Police Association were currently discussing a new staff deployment model. “We’re working in relation to deploying

this current lot [of recruits] and working out then where the demand is for further [police],” he said. “And that’s going to drive our decision-making about talking to the government.” However, Police Association secretary Ron Iddles said that while a model that helped identify the number of police needed was imperative, many more officers were required “right away” to meet shortfalls. “A deployment model is a great plan for the future, but police need help today,” Mr Iddles said. “As the chief commissioner indicated [last week], it’s inevitable that we will need more, given that it takes years to recruit and train police officers. Victoria Police should not wait a day longer to accept the need is real and ask the

government to make good its pledge to provide the additional support.” The state government announced funding for 300 frontline police in the recent state budget, but more than 1800 are needed across the state to keep up with population, according to the union. Mr Iddles said it was “not surprising” senior command had conceded it needed more police because crime had increased, community safety perceptions had decreased, and police services had been reduced. The state government has indicated it will provide the resources and powers Mr Ashton needs. Police Minister Lisa Neville said funding for the requests will be announced in next year’s budget.

“I meet regularly with both Chief Commissioner Ashton and the secretary of the Police Association, Ron Iddles,” Ms Neville said. “They have both indicated they’re working together on the deployment model and are keeping me informed of those discussions. “As the Premier has clearly said, we will continue to provide police the resources and powers they need to fight crime and keep Victorians safe.” Police taskforce Operation Regnant was set up to conduct nightly patrols in Melton, Brimbank and across the west to tackle an increase in crime. Since its inception two months ago, about 400 people have been arrested for offences including theft of cars, theft from cars and breaches of public order.

Push to force medical disclosure By Sumeyya Ilanbey Doctors should be required to immediately notify a national regulator if they have writs against them or have reached confidential settlements, according to Victoria’s health minister. Jill Hennessy will urge her federal and interstate counterparts next month to review the way the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) operates. The review bid follows the national agency coming under fire last year for taking more than two years to respond to complaints about a doctor at the Bacchus Marsh Hospital.

Ms Hennessy accused AHPRA of failing to do its job after a recent investigation into stillborn deaths at the hospital found there were 18 preventable baby deaths between 2003 and 2014. An ABC investigation in February revealed that one of the obstetricians at Bacchus Marsh Hospital had 15 writs against them for alleged medical negligence over 14 years. The doctor, who reportedly settled all of the cases, was reported several times to AHPRA, but doctors who are sued and reach a confidential settlement are not currently required to inform the regulator. Ms Hennessy said Victorians deserved a

cases and writs, would strengthen public safety. An AHPRA spokeswoman said the investigations into the Bacchus Marsh Hospital were ongoing and at various stages. She said a number of doctors and midwives were being questioned. “AHPRA is participating in work with state and territory governments on ways in which the system of practitioner regulation can be improved,” the spokeswoman said. “We’re also working to streamline the management of complaints with other health complaints bodies, address false or misleading claims by registered health practitioners, and review the use of chaperoning restrictions.”

regulator that put patient safety “front and centre”. “Since becoming health minister, it has become clear to me there are a number of gaps in the national legislation that regulates doctors, nurses and other health professionals in our health system,” she said. “That’s why later this year, I will be bringing a suite of legislative reform proposals to the October COAG [Council of Australian Governments] Health Council meeting and requesting my colleagues to review the way in which AHPRA operates.” Ms Hennessy said the proposals, including mandatory notification of medical settlement

How-to-vote cards will not be distributed in postal voting packs in the lead-up to this year’s council elections. Opposition local government spokesman David Davis said a disallowance motion, which succeeded in getting through State Parliament recently, meant dummy candidates, who run just to harvest votes and preference them to a lead candidate, now face bigger obstacles. “They will have to distribute their own material on the internet, by advertisements or by letterbox,” Mr Davis said. “VEC electoral officials should not be distributing how to vote cards. That should be a matter for candidates.” Mr Davis said the aim is to discourage candidates not genuinely seeking election. It came just weeks after Western Metropolitan Liberal MP Bernie Finn called on the local government minister to watch the Wyndham council elections. He believes particular candidates will run dummies in a bid to control the council. But Local Government Minister, Natalie Hutchins labelled the postal information change as “nothing more than a stunt” that will increase the level of informal voting. “The Liberals could have made this change when they were in government, but failed to act,” she said. The council elections will be held statewide on October 22.

Phar Lap’s stables up for a revamp Phar Lap was housed at the Underbank Stud in Bacchus Marsh to hide him from harm between racing preparations. It’s not known when the stables were built, but they are at least 86-years-old – and in need of serious restoration. Kataland, the company behind the Underbank development, has decided to restore the stables for use as a public space. Development manager Allan Carlsson hopes the historical structure could one day be used

Legends don’t come around that often – but when they do, their legacies live on for decades. From humble beginnings, Phar Lap captured the hearts and minds of Australians during the Great Depression in the 1930s. He didn’t have great looks nor much obvious racing potential and was leased cheaply by a relatively unknown trainer Harry Telford. But in the four years of his racing career, the chestnut gelding won 37 out of 51 races in which he was entered.

Big wet hits the region By Sumeyya Ilanbey Scores of Melton and Moorabool roads were closed, water catchments flooded and golf tournaments cancelled following heavy rainfall last week. Flood warnings were issued for the Werribee River, in Ballan, after water levels exceeded the two-metre mark last Wednesday, passing the minor flood level of 1.4 metres. The minor flooding in the river catchment affected low-lying areas near the waterway and disrupted nearby roads. Victorian State Emergency Service members were called to 12 flooding and building damage incidents in Moorabool last Tuesday and Wednesday, and to one incident in Melton. SES spokeswoman Jacque Quaine said that while there was no major damage to any property or roads, people were concerned about their properties flooding following rising water levels. “A few were caused by blocked drains and some people had sandbags out to soak the water,” Ms Quaine said. Meanwhile, Melton Valley Golf Club was forced to cancel several of its spring tournaments after the grounds were soaked, walkways flooded and usually barren creek beds flowed with water. General manager David Alton said the club lost about $5000 in income. “We had three events mid-week this week that were booked in – all have been cancelled,” Mr Alton said. “It’s a loss of income on golf fees, as well as food and drink. “We’ve had quite a bit of rain over the past few months, so it’s harder for the grass to soak it in. The grounds are very wet – every step you take … water squelches up out of the ground.”

Homelessness: concern for all The community is the “cornerstone” to ending youth homelessness, experts say. Speaking at the Melton launch of a magazine, Parity, Hope Street chief executive Donna Bennett said that engaging the community and ensuring it “owned” the solutions was imperative to tackling youth homelessness. For the past three years, Hope Street has been working with various Melton businesses and agencies to establish a youth refuge centre. The state government has announced $1.2 million funding for the centre and work is now in the design stage. The closest similar centre is almost 30 kilometres away. Ms Bennett said young people were an important part of the campaign for the centre, but the community’s enthusiasm for a refuge in the municipality drove its success. “Hope Street is a part of the Melton community. “We want to be there for our kids; we want to support them. We don’t want them experiencing family violence or going hungry because they can’t afford to have more than one meal a day.” State Housing, Disability and Ageing Minister Martin Foley called on the federal government to commit to the National Partnership Agreement on Homelessness. Parity is published by the not-for-profit Council to Homeless Persons.

A friendly clash of quilts Dozens of colourful quilt samples produced by Melton and Swiss women will be displayed as part of a biennial quilting exhibition. Melton-based Willows Quilting Group partnered with Swiss group Quiltgruppe Mönchaltorf several years ago to meet like-minded people around the world and challenge each other. Maureen Mohr, a co-ordinator of the Willows Quilting Group, recalls that when she found the Swiss quilters online she was extremely nervous. They were far more advanced and their styles very different, she said. But the Melton group

has come a long way, Ms Mohr says. “It’s a little bit of a challenge to our group, but it’s a way for us just to speak to someone on the other side of the world. “Their likes and their way of quilting was different to ours,” she says. “They’re into arty quilts whereas we were quite traditional.” The A4-size quilt samples will be displayed at St Catherine’s Hall, Bulmans Road, Melton South, on the weekend of October 8-9 from 10am-4pm. Entry costs $7. Details: 9743 3962 or 9743 5192. Sumeyya Ilanbey

Trauma up, road deaths down By Sumeyya Ilanbey

That’s love, to a tea Pam and Pieter Bink say they’ve never fought in their 60 years of marriage. The secret? “Give your wife a cup of tea in bed each morning,” Mr Bink says. The Bacchus Marsh lovebirds celebrated the milestone on Saturday, September 10, surrounded by friends and family at the Providence Village, where they live. The couple and their three young children moved to Australia from Holland in 1960. Mr Bink worked as a carpenter and Mrs Bink as a nurse. They’re now enjoying retirement with their children, nine grandchildren, and 11 great grandchildren. “Talk to each other,” Mrs Bink says. “We’ve never had a fight; that’s really true. If there’s a problem talk about it. Don’t get angry, just talk about it.” Mrs Bink says the couple have had a very good life together. “We do everything together and enjoy each other’s company.”

While fatalities on Melton roads have dropped significantly in the past three years, serious injury crashes have almost doubled, recent road data reveals. The Transport Accident Commission’s (TAC) Towards Zero June-quarter statistics reveal there were three fatalities on Melton roads this year, compared with six in the same period last year, and 10 the year before that. But the number of people hospitalised for more than two weeks as a result of road accidents in the 2015 calendar year was 20, compared with 11 the year before and 10 in 2013. And the number of overall hospital admissions following crashes on Melton roads was 85 in the 2015 calendar year – compared with 49 in 2014, and 70 in 2013. TAC road safety manager Liz Waller said the upward trend in serious injuries was worrying because they had a “devastating” impact. “It’s always welcome to see a reduction in lives lost, but we can never look at a downward trend in Melton and say that’s a good thing – unless the number is zero,” Ms Waller said. “We have to accept that people will always make mistakes on the roads, but as the cars people drive and the roads we drive on become safer, these mistakes will become less likely to result in death or serious injury.” More than 6200 Victorians were admitted to hospital following accidents in 2015, a five per cent increase on the previous year. And the number of people (969) spending more than two weeks in hospital was a 10 per cent increase on the previous year. Ms Waller said everyone had a responsibility to drive down the road toll and serious injury collisions.

Mary Elizabeth Tolhurst was a “remarkable” woman – a selfless volunteer, dedicated community member and Melton’s stalwart historian. Mrs Tolhurst, described as Melton’s go-to person for help, was a staunch supporter of the Melton Historical Society and helped author Joan Starr with Melton Plains of Promise, which has been described as an invaluable source of information on the town’s history. As friends and family farewelled the 92-year-old on Friday, her daughter Kathleen Marsh described her mum as a “remarkable woman, with her clear memories and stories of generations past”. Mrs Tolhurst died at the Estia Health aged-care home on Monday, September 12. “She believed that life should be honest, upright and honourable, and to do your best for everybody,” Ms Marsh said. “Mary received numerous awards, certificates and recognitions over the years for her most valuable and selfless contributions.” Ms Marsh said her mother’s greatest achievement was the love, respect and inspiration she gave to her two children, daughter-in-law, seven grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, and great-greatgranddaughter.” Mrs Tolhurst was born on March 10, 1924, to George and Elizabeth Tarleton and was the great-granddaughter of Hannah Watts, a notable Melton early settler. Love rules, in spite of loss By Alexandra Laskie On the eve of Father’s Day last year, Rosie Visevic Mamic’s father, Stipe, lay in bed in a catatonic state. He was “code blue”, doctors’ speak for a medical emergency, and his family had decided the time had come to call in a priest. But their tears and a heavy cloud of grief that had enveloped the room were lifted by the sound of singing. “He woke-up singing,” Rosie says. “He had septicaemia. They’d called the priest, but that’s how strong his will to live is,” she says. Her 78-year-old father’s health has steadily declined since he was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease, the most common form of dementia, six years ago. Rosie says she’s grateful to have her father here still, but the hardest part about having a family member with Alzheimer’s disease is her inability to mourn for the dad she once had. “I’ve lost my dad, but I can’t grieve because he’s still alive,” the 39-year-old says. Stipe, 78, has spent the past two and a half months at a Keilor Downs nursing home, where he was moved after suffering a minor stroke at home. Previously, Rosie’s mother, Jela, was his full-time carer, with help from Rosie and her two brothers, Ante and Peter; they would take turns bathing him and sharing the cooking and cleaning duties. The Taylors Lakes resident says few people understand dementia. “Your friends stop coming because no one

knows how to deal with it. They don’t know how to approach him. But I’d rather tears than someone not coming at all,” she says. During Dementia Awareness Month, which is held every September, Alzheimer’s Australia urges people to find out more about the collection of symptoms caused by disorders affecting the brain, broadly known as dementia.

This year’s theme is: You are not alone, and the Alzheimer’s organisation will host a number of events during the month designed to show people that there are support services available for those living with dementia, their families and carers. Rosie’s advice to others with a family member who has been diagnosed, is to reach out and get help. National Dementia Helpline 1800 100 500 is a free telephone information and support service available across Australia.

MY PLACE Carolyn MacGavin, 69, has been on the airwaves for the past three decades, sharing her love of music and quirky facts about famous musicians. She talks with Sumeyya Ilanbey. What’s your connection to Melton? I’ve been living in Melton for 43 years. My children and granchildren are also living in the same town. We moved from Footscray … because we had a young family and my late husband had a block of land up here. What’s your favourite thing about living in Melton? The fresh environment and not feeling crammed in. I do like the old Melton, but I don’t think we could go backwards. I miss the simple things – we used to be known when we went to the shops. What would you change about the area if you could?

(Joe Mastroianni)

What would I change? Not that much. Maybe a better shopping development down in Melton South. I think Woodgrove is big enough, but it’s gotten too busy. I live in Melton South … a shopping centre down here would be a good idea. Where’s your favourite place to hang out in Melton? I like the Golden Fleece Hotel and Matildas, the new coffee shop at Melton South. The coffee shop is nice and new and the people are nice. How did you get involved with Melton 979fm? I was interviewed by a lady and she said, “You would be good on radio” – that was 30 years

ago. I like to share my taste in music … I like to share my knowledge. I read up about various things, such as musicians’ real given names. What makes a good radio broadcaster? I think the presentation and the person being

interested in the music. We’ve got a [specific] age audience at lunchtime – you like to think we’re catering for them and you’re not playing heavy metal.

At one stage I used to do interviews … I used to have all the council candidates come in and have a conversation. It made me aware of what the community needs are.

Any defining moments during your on-air role?

Ms MacGavin presents a show every Wednesday from noon-2pm, on Melton 979fm.

Bob Turner with Melton Residents’ Association president Peter Rowan. (Joe Mastroianni)

Social hub plugs a gap When Bob and Val Turner decided to give back to their community, they thought what better way to do it than support its young people. And the Gap on Graham was born, taking shape as a building on Graham Street, Melton, where young people can get together, hang out and have a laugh. Mr Turner, who is also a Melton councillor, said the initiative wouldn’t have been successful without the help of local people and their generous donations. A recent fundraising event brought in more than $8500 for the social hub, meaning organisers can keep its doors open. “The Melton Residents’ Association offered us a $500 cheque,” Mr Turner said. “To be

honest, our rent is $4000 a month [so that will help].” Mr Turner says the facility is important for young people to socialise and get them off the streets. “We’ve asked some people, ‘What would you do if you weren’t here on a Friday night?’ and they say, ‘I don’t know; just sit at home or go to bed’. The kids who come here can get away from whatever it is they’re going through.” Mr Turner says they’re hoping to get some businesses or philanthropists to donate and support the Gap on Graham. What’s in a name is history … By Alexandra Laskie Names are tricky … and prominent Australian linguist and current Chair of Linguistics at Monash University Professor Kate Burridge is one of the first to admit this. Despite Australia’s relatively short history, the way we pronounce the names of some Victorian suburbs has changed since they were first nominated and assigned a post office in the mid to late 19th century. “Pronunciation [of words will change] spectacularly over time,” Professor Burridge says. “Often sounds will drop off at the end. “Typically words get shorter, and names can do that dramatically. What happens is frequently [used] words shorten strikingly.” And, she says, there’s no definitive answer when it comes to the “correct” way to pronounce any suburb names due to the fluid nature of the English language. “I suppose it’s not a clear-cut thing. Things change and will always change.” She says snobbery can be attached to certain pronunciations – such as Reser-VOIR, pronounced with a French inflection, as opposed to Reser-VOR – for the area known for its three water reservoirs; while the way a person says Lalor can reveal their age or how new they are to the area. Star Weekly has delved into the history of suburb names in Melbourne’s north and west that people often bumble over, fight about, say incorrectly or, after taking a look at the spelling, are too downright scared to say aloud at all. CAIRNLEA – Long-serving Cairnlea Park Primary School teacher Margaret Connelly says Cairnlea is a Scottish Gaelic word and should be pronounced as native speakers would say it, which is the same way Australians

say the tropical north Queensland city ‘Cairns’. She says the name has its origins in the Scottish word for a pile of rocks – a cairn – in reference to the cairn on the corner of Station Street and Ballarat Road, which was built to commemorate the centenary of the Hamilton Hume and William Hovell expedition to find new grazing land for the young colony. This passed through Deer Park in 1824. According to Sunshine and District Historical Society, ‘lea’ refers to a paddock. Ms Connelly, the school’s literacy coach, says

the suburb should be pronounced CAIRN-lea and later continued his fight for the working not CARN-lea. “It’s not phonetically correct to class in the Victorian Upper House. The Peter Lalor Co-operative Housing say CARN-lea,” Ms Connelly points out. Society was named in his honour. The society LALOR – The northern suburb of Lalor was was formed in 1947 and was made up of named after Eureka stockade leader and ex-servicemen who built 900 homes on land politician Peter Lalor, whose surname was north of Thomastown – today’s Lalor – to pronounced LAW-ler. Mr Lalor migrated to address Victoria’s severe housing shortage and Australia in 1852 and headed straight to the rampant building costs following the war. Annie MacKenzie’s husband George was goldfields. He rallied thousands to fight for the rights and liberties of diggers and spearheaded part of the co-operative and built their brick the infamous Eureka Stockade uprising in 1854, home in Middleton Street where she continues

to live today. The 92-year-old gets frustrated when people say LAY-lor because she feels it is disrespectful to the hundreds of soldiers who fought for this country during the war and built much of the suburb. “It was named after Peter Lalor, the man who gave us an eight-hour working day.” TRUGANINA – Honorary secretary of the Truganina Progress Association Wendy Bitans says Truganina is named after an indigenous woman called Truganini. But, she says, the name isn’t pronounced phonetically, it’s Truga-NINE-a, not Truga-Neena as most people tend to say. “When people say it like that it makes it an Italian name but it is actually an Aboriginal name,” she says. ROXBURGH PARK – The Heritage Council of Victoria notes Roxburgh Park was “almost certainly” named by Thomas Brunton, a prominent flour miller and public and community office holder, president of the Royal Agricultural Society and a Member of the Legislative Council [upper house parliamentarian]. A Victorian heritage database report says Mr Brunton named his 131 hectares at 30 Whiltshire Drive after his birthplace on the Tweed River in Scotland. Brunton bred cattle, horses and Shropshire sheep at Roxburgh Park. Hume councillor Jack Ogilvie says many people pronounce the suburb’s name Rox-BERG Park, rather than the way the Scottish town of Roxburgh is said. “I tell people, no, it’s called Rox-BROUGH Park, without the emphasis on the ‘g’.” RIDDELLS CREEK – The first European settlers in Riddells Creek were cousins John

Carre Riddell and Thomas Ferrier Hamilton in 1841, who emigrated from Scotland on the Abberton. They purchased a stock and depasturing licence of the Mount Macedon run to graze cattle. According to the Australian National University’s National Centre of Biography, Mr Riddell’s surname, after whom the suburb was named, is pronounced “Riddle”, not “Riddell” as it appears. MYRNIONG – Bacchus Marsh District Historical Society member Jenny Couper says Myrniong should be pronounced Mer-NE-ong. “The name is thought to be an Indigenous word meaning edible root,” she says. COIMADAI – Ms Couper says the historical society believes the town’s name is derived from an indigenous word describing an old, male kangaroo at rest. She says it should be pronounced Com-I-da. Coimadai Primary School opened in 1862 and is still open today.

Canny questions will get the best talent To get the best insight into how a jobseeker will perform in your business, an employer’s interaction with referees is important and can reveal a lot, according to Marlene Cassar, manager of Sarina Russo Job Access Melton. “When contacting referees, these few tips can help an employer get the information they’re seeking,” Ms Cassar says. “If they’re followed, the information gained can be a huge help during the final decision process.” 1. Reaction to your call A good candidate makes their referees aware of their job application. If the referees respond professionally and with confidence they are a reliable source and your candidate is well prepared. But if they are blasé or surprised you should be concerned. 2. Look at their qualifications The higher the standing of the referee, and the better their level of interaction, the more you will clarify the work ethic and personal values the candidate possesses. 3. Assess their enthusiasm The tone of voice speaks volumes about the referee’s relationship with the candidate. Is the referee enthusiastic and eager to sing their praise, or are they guarded and reserved in their descriptions? 4. Seek a well-rounded opinion about the candidate’s employment A good referee will speak of a candidate’s strengths and weaknesses. Ask for their opinion about the candidate’s suitability for the position – and don’t be afraid to dig deeper. 5. Ask them if they have any extra comments Once you have asked your list of questions and gathered examples, ask the referee for any additional comments. This can pinpoint the personal and professional qualities the candidate can bring to your team. “We encourage local employers needing staff to contact us because there are many experienced and skilful jobseekers who are looking for an immediate start,” Ms Cassar says. Climate change plays havoc with roofs

Source: Archicentre and http:// greenbuildingelements.com/2015/06/07/ how-climate-change-affects-buildingdesign/

40 MELTON & MOORABOOL STAR WEEKLY \ SEPTEMBER 20, 2016

(Supplied)

Australian home and building owners are spending more on roof and water damage repairs as increased storms and big rainfall events cause roof stress. Climate change is also forcing architects and developers to adapt building designs and plans to ensure roofs stay intact, says David Hallett, Victorian state manager of Archicentre. “Storms across the country are causing architects to re-think roof structure and design,” he says. The change in rainfall patterns has resulted in less rain, but in more intense rainfall events, and many roofs have been severely damaged because of extreme and unpredictable weather patterns. “Extreme rainfall means house roofs and plumbing fixtures, such as guttering, downpipes and drainage, are placed under more stress,” Mr Halltee says. “Often, overflowing guttering, especially internal guttering, can fail and flood the interior of the house, causing major damage running into thousands of dollars.” The increased intensity of storms is putting extreme structural pressure on roofs. High winds, cyclones and roof damage caused by falling trees, power poles or debris is also increasing. The United Nations Environmental Program (UNEP) Sustainable Buildings and Climate Initiative believes sustainable building design starts with an understanding of the climate onsite.

SPORT Grassroots footy gives Burton that winning feeling

Daniel Burton has made an immediate impact in his first year at Bacchus Marsh. (Shawn Smits)

When Daniel Burton was 17, Bacchus Marsh president Adam Sutherland came to his house and asked him to play for the Cobras. “Suther, came down to Point Cook … and he said ‘come play, come play’. I looked at him, and said if you can convince my mum to drive me to training twice a week, done. “It didn’t work out then.” Sutherland’s persistence continued, and with some old friendships at the club, the now 22-year-old Burton finally made the move to the Cobras this season. The move proved to be a fruitful one for both Burton and the Cobras, with Burton playing a vital role in the club’s first ever Ballarat Football League premiership. He was also named as ruckman in the BFL team of the year, finished in the top five in the Henderson Medal, and topped it off with

the AFL Victoria Country Medal for best on ground, as adjudged by the umpires in the grand final. Burton was set for a battle with Sunbury Lions’ ruckman David Kovacevic in the grand final, but when Kovacevic was a late withdrawal Burton made the most of it. “It definitely helped me out a little bit,” he said. “He’s a big boy, and it [his withdrawal] might have saved my legs for the last quarter. Wrestling with that bloke for 120 minutes takes it out of you pretty quickly. “You can see how much it [the win] means to people. You’ve got people in tears saying they’ve been waiting for this for 40 years. It’s my first year, which makes it pretty special.” While proud of the on-field accolades

coming his way this season, Burton says the simple fact of getting on the park was his biggest achievement. He said it was part of the reason he made the move to the Cobras from VFL side Werribee. “Once Werribee went full alignment with North Melbourne, it was always going to be a lot harder to get a game. “I hadn’t really played a full season ever,” Burton said. “So I came back [to local footy]. I could back it off a little, and listen to my body a bit more. “Usually, I’ve spent 10 or 15 games on the sidelines with ankles, or feet or OP [osteitis pubis], or something. “I’ve done really well just to get the full season, which is the most enjoyable part.” Tara Murray

Cobras’ belief sweeps clean By Tara Murray “Belief.” That’s how Bacchus Marsh coach Travis Hodgson explains the improvement in his side this season. The Cobras hadn’t played finals for 15 years and hadn’t won a grand final since the 1970s, but it was all very different in this year’s Ballarat Football League finals series. After a nervous start in the qualifying final, Bacchus Marsh kept minor premiers Lake Wendouree goalless in the second half to win through to the semi. Then, against the Sunbury Lions, the Cobras kicked the game’s first seven goals to set up a win and a grand final spot. On Saturday, the Cobras put it together for four quarters against the Lions to seal their first Ballarat Football League premiership, winning 13.21 (99)-5.14 (44). The Cobras kicked the first two goals of the game before the Lions responded with three of their own. With Jarrah Maksymow and Declan Phyland kicking their second goals of the quarter, the Cobras held a goal lead at quarter-time. Whatever Hodgson said at the break worked as the Cobras broke the game open with four goals in the first 11 minutes. A fifth goal for the term opened the lead out to 39 points and the game was now the Cobras’ for the taking. Yet two late goals from the Lions kept their slight chances alive. The third quarter was one of missed opportunities for both teams, which, between them, kicked 11 points before Cameron Richardson booted the only goal for the term. Richardson also kicked the first of the last quarter and captain Tyson Shea sealed the win with his own goal. Hodgson said he couldn’t have asked for any more from his side. “They’ve been fantastic all year, but there’s been the question mark of whether they could produce it on the day,” he summed up. “We played good footy early. I think we put Sunbury to the sword a bit and when they ran out of gas we kept going.” Hodgson said the biggest change in his side this year had been on the mental side of things rather than any skill level. “Belief is such a big thing. “The boys are a year older and we brought in a few handy players. The platform was laid when we beat Sunbury in round one and Darley in round two. That gave us a real level of belief. “Players who have had average years over the past couple of seasons have become very good players. “It’s not a development thing skill-wise; they believe they can get the job done.” The inclusions of former AFL player Damian

Cupido in round four and Maksymow (four goals) in round five proved to be the final pieces of the puzzle. “Those two were what we needed. We’ve got a real blue-collar team and they both have a bit of class, bring a bit of polish.” Daniel Burton was named best on ground by the grand final umpires, while BFL officials awarded Jackson Bolton the Roy Edward Memorial Trophy. Burton, who had a standout season in his first year at the club, was the player who benefited most from the late withdrawal of his direct opponent David Kovacevic. “Fair to say we weren’t disappointed with that,” Hodgson said. “Burton got hold of him around the ground the last two times we beat them, but Kovacevic has got the better of the hit-outs. We identified Sunbury’s strength as their smalls’ ability to get on the end of his ruck work on the fly. “To lose that advantage was always going to take an edge off them. Our boys still had to capitalise, and they did.” Hodgson said a lot of people had done a lot of hard work to get the Cobras to their flag,

but he paid particular tribute to Cameron Richardson, who kicked two goals and coached the side in the previous two seasons. “I think it takes a pretty special person to hang around in those circumstances,” Hodgson said of Richardson. “Cam chose not to go on as coach and, in the same situation, I don’t think I’d have done the same thing. “For him to stay here with the best interests of the club at heart and have the season he did says a lot about the person.” Hodgson said that with such a young playing group, they were hoping this was the start of something special. “Bacchus Marsh haven’t had success for a long time, but they’ve worked really hard for a long time. “I’m thoroughly thrilled for them, and I think this will set us up for a really positive future. “We won today with 16 of the 22 being Bacchus Marsh juniors, and most being under 23. I think it’s the start of something really good.” For more pictures, go to starweekly.com.au 45 MELTON & MOORABOOL STAR WEEKLY \ SEPTEMBER 20, 2016

Captain’s goal seals flag By Tara Murray Tyson Shea has been through it all at Bacchus Marsh Football Club. He started playing at the Cobras in under-12s before working his way through the ranks and into the senior team. Since making his seniors debut as a 17-year-old, he was been an important member of the side. “I’ve had years where we didn’t win a game during juniors, and then in seniors, where we’ve been flogged by 100 points every week, he recalled at the weekend. On Saturday, all those losses became distant memories as Shea captained the Cobras to their first-ever Ballarat Football League premiership. They defeated the Sunbury Lions, 13.21 (99)-5.14 (44). For Shea, it’s a moment he thought may never come. A goal in the last quarter from Shea put the final nail in the coffin for the Lions. “It’s amazing,” he said after the grand final. “Not in my wildest dreams did I think I’d be a premiership captain, and to be the first for the club [in the Ballarat Football League] is something special. “I’ve been here since under-12s, I played my last game of under-16s and the next year I was playing seniors as a 17 year old, I can’t describe it. “You dream about kicking a goal on grand final day – and to kick basically the sealer, the one that really knocked them out – in front of the crowd …” Many of Shea’s teammates will have a similar story to tell, with 16 of the 22 premiership players contesting all their football with the Cobras.Until this year, none of them had played in a senior final. Bacchus Marsh’s last final series before this year was in 2001. The club’s last grand final appearance, a loss to the Lions, was 17 years ago. And the last premiership was won before Maddingley and Bacchus Marsh merged in 1979. Maddingley’s won a premiership in 1977 and Bacchus Marsh won in 1974, both in the Ballarat-Bacchus Marsh Football League. Shea said just making the finals was a big achievement. “That first final was a big achievement … and to back it up the following week against Sunbury, to beat them and to come out and play the way we did today, is something special.” Shea said the win was for the fans, not just the club and players. “It’s the supporters, the sponsors and the whole community. “They were a massive support the whole finals series, coming up the highway to support us “They’ve been through it as well. ”

Heartache turns to heady joy for ol’timers

It’s been a long time coming for Stuart Clarke. (Shawn Smits) 46 MELTON & MOORABOOL STAR WEEKLY \ SEPTEMBER 20, 2016

Diggers Rest captain Stuart Clarke has been through more grand final heartache than most players in their careers. Clarke had been on five losing Riddell District Football League grand final sides … and he isn’t alone. Many of his Burras’ teammates have been part of several grand final losses – Col Laurie and Jeff Heritage had been through six. On Sunday though, all that heartache seemed a distant memory as the Burras won their first premiership since 1993. For Clarke, the reality of being a premiership player was still sinking in in the rooms after the game. “I was struggling to breathe out there – everyone was crowded around me, and I was suffocating, just hugging everyone and kissing babies. “I’m shocked – 2006 was the first time we went against Riddell and started this chain, and it was 10 years in the making.” The first people Clarke approached after the game were Laurie and Heritage. “Just looking at Col Laurie and Jeff Heritage

and they’ve been through six. They’re getting old, and don’t have many years left and might retire. I went straight up to both of them and they bawled their eyes out – to me, just seeing them makes it worth it. “You don’t want to put anyone through that.” While many diehard supporters were thinking that it could be another case of ‘so close but so far’, Clarke had a different mindset. “I had belief. “Mick Kilty went off and came back on with 10 minutes to go, and that’s when we kicked all the goals. He saved us in the end. “I was so relieved; the pressure straight back on it was surreal, and I didn’t know how to take it. Positions were everywhere, it was a crazy moment. “When [Brent] Tuckey and Jase Williams kicked the goals, I couldn’t see them go in, but the crowd screamed – I lost it. “It was straight back in the middle … to win the next contest. It was a hard slug all day. It was unbelievable.” Tara Murray

The second the ball left Jason Williams’ foot late in extra time of the Riddell District Football League grand final, he knew it was going through for a goal. The Burras were trailing by one point and it looked like they could be headed for a fourth straight grand final loss. Williams himself hadn’t had his best game, kicking only one goal to that point as he and Riddell’s Tim Walsh had an enthralling battle. But what had transpired earlier in the game didn’t matter when Williams put his side in front with what would ultimately be the winning goal. The Burras won 12.14 (86)-12.8 (80). After the game, Williams struggled to comprehend the win. “We’d lost three [grand finals] in a row,” he said. “To see the smile of everyone else’s faces as the siren went … it’s a special feeling. “It all happened so fast,” he said. “I remember getting the ball and looking down … I just knew I hit it perfectly. “As soon as it hit my foot it was going through … there’s no better feeling. Williams said the winning moments were the best of his life and a great ending to what he describes as one of his most difficult years in football. Williams was a leading contender on reality TV show The Recruit before being sidelined by a hand injury earlier this year. “I can’t tell you how special this is – it’s the best thing that’s happened in my life. “It’s probably been the worst year of my footy life and the only thing that could change that is win the flag … and it turns around to be the best year of my life.” Once the siren went, Williams made a beeline for Burras coach Shaun Sims. “Shaun is the most amazing person I’ve met in my life,” he said. “I would do this 100 times over for him.” Tara Murray

Premiership redemption for Diggers Rest reserves Diggers Rest players went into the Riddell District Football League reserves grand final against Sunbury Kangaroos seeking redemption – and they got it. After losing to the Kangaroos in last year’s grand final, the Burras were determined history would not repeat itself. The Burras kicked the first two goals of the match but the Kangaroos matched that and levelled the scores heading into quarter-time. From that point, it was all the Burras – they kicked the next seven goals to lead by 47 points at the main break. The Kangaroos kicked the first two goals of the second half, but that was it. The Burras snuffed out the Kangaroos’ hopes of a third straight reserves premiership. Having kept the Kangaroos goal-less in the second quarter, they did it again in the fourth quarter for a big 17.14 (116)-5.4 (34) win. Steven Freeth kicked four goals for the Burras, while Chris Lawton, Brad Sluggett and Brad Wilson were named the side’s best. Burras coach Antes Power, who came across to the club this year from Riddell, said that while the side had played in the grand final

last year, the players considered this year a fresh start. “They wanted something different and something fresh,” he said. “They were always going all the way – someone had to take it from them.” Power said the key was getting a match-winning margin early on to ensure the Kangaroos couldn’t come from behind a second straight year. “They’re a quality side and they have won two premierships,” he said. “We had to work really hard in that first quarter to break them. When we broke them, we controlled the game for most of the last three quarters. “I don’t think anyone really missed out … everyone got the medal [across the two grades]. “That’s what’s really good – that it’s a whole club thing and a great day for the Burras. “We’ll be strong for a few years … [there’s] a lot of young talent and a number of under-18.5s coming through next year.” Tara Murray

Burras break their drought By Tara Murray It seemed somewhat fitting that Diggers Rest’s premiership drought came to an end in dramatic circumstances. The Burras had lost the past three Riddell District Football League grand finals and been a perennial runner-up for a decade. The club’s only senior premiership was 1993 when the league still had two divisions and the Burras won division 2. Going into Sunday’s grand final, the Burras had as good a chance as any of their predecessors to make history. They were clearly the best side all year, but it counted for little as Riddell pushed them all the way. At the final siren, scores were level, meaning the game was going to extra time.

The Bombers’ Cameron Casson scored the only goal in the first five minutes of extra time to lead by seven points at the change of ends. Burras’ Brent Tuckey responded soon into the second period. The Burras needed a hero and they found him in Jason Williams. Williams got free in the forward 50 and kicked truly to put them five points in front. A final point sealed the 12.14 (86)-12.8 (80) result. Burras’ coach Shaun Sims, who earlier on Sunday had played in the Burras’ reserves premiership, was in shock after the game. “To win two premierships in the one day is very unlikely … it’s a really good thing for the club. “We played some good footy and some poor footy, but we hung in, fought back and ended up winning. “If you want to win a grand final … that’s one way to do it.” There were moments when the Burras thought they might fall short again. Early on, they couldn’t convert in front of goal, allowing the more accurate Bombers to stay in touch. “Riddell were fantastic,” Sims said. “We probably hurt ourselves with kicking at the start. It was seven shots to their six at quarter-time when we’d had the wind. We just couldn’t kick goals and put pressure on them. “That was the key, to put scoreboard pressure on, and we just never got it.” The Bombers looked the better team at three-quarter time. The Burras started a man down in the last quarter after Mick Kilty was

sent from the field following a scuffle but despite having 17 players for the 15-minute send-off, they held on, each team scoring a goal before Kilty returned to become the game saver. “Any sort of game when you go 15 minutes a player down, it’s extremely hard. Clubs are so

good at using the spare,” Sims said. “He came back on, kicked two goals and the rest will be history. He stood up when it counted. He did the wrong thing, but you forget that when you win.” Taylor Hine was awarded the Doug McIntyre

Medal as best on ground, while Cameron McCabe won the AFL Victoria Medal. Sims said while the recruitment of former AFL players Hine and Cale Morton had got a lot of publicity, it was the younger players’ development that had taken them to the next level. “People say we’ve gone on a recruiting spree, but we lost five players and brought in two. “Josh Wallace, BJ Kilty, Andrew Tyquin and Mark Freeth have all been in our system for three or four years now. Andrew was among the best players in the first two finals. That’s where our improvement has come. “Cale and Taylor came on top of that and played to their strengths.” Sims said the win wasn’t just for the players but the club itself. “We’re a club for netballers and footballers, and everyone I’ve spoken to feels like they’re part of it. This was a great way to go out. You could hear our crowd and the supporters. “Some of our guys have played in five losing grand finals. Now they get this, and most of that other stuff is forgotten. To our guys’ credit, they stuck with it. Everyone wants us to lose, but now we can enjoy being the best team in the RDFL for six months.” For more pictures of Sunday’s three football grand finals and a wrap of Rupertswood’s under-18.5 premiership, go to www.starweekly. com.au 47 MELTON & MOORABOOL STAR WEEKLY \ SEPTEMBER 20, 2016

Scrappy Bombers get the job done, again It wasn’t Riddell’s best performance or cleanest game – but none of that mattered as the Bombers went back-to-back in A-grade Riddell District Netball League premierships. The Bombers, playing in their third straight grand final, were looking to make it two wins in two years over Macedon. For much of the first half, nothing separated the two teams. When the Cats looked like they were the better team, the Bombers were doing enough to keep the lead. That lead got out to as many as eight goals in the third quarter, but the Bombers let the Cats back into the game. The Cats on seven or eight occasions got the margin back to three goals in the last quarter. But they couldn’t get any closer. The end result was a 46-42 win to the Bombers. Bombers coach Jarrad Walker admitted he wasn’t happy with how the game played out – yet was delighted with the result. “We were better for 35 minutes and Macedon for the other 25 minutes of the game,” he said. “We were lucky enough to score enough goals in that 35 minutes when we were in control. “Our ball placement was terrible – we were passing into hands, passing short and not using speed or preliminary moves to get to the ball. We did enough to get across the line.” Walker said he knew that if his players kept playing the way they had in the first half, the Cats would keep coming. “We kept them in the game,” he said. “They did make same uncharacteristic errors as well and we capitalised. “There was a lot of colourful language on the bench … we were in control of the match and then let them have another free run.” Bec Colwell was the best of the shooters, shooting 27 goals at 75 per cent. bounced back in the second half. She scored 18 goals for the game. “It’s really hard for goalers to perform in finals – just so much pressure,” Walker said. “Christine brings her best netball to finals. She found the movement we were after … that’s what Ellen [Close] showed when she was out there. Christine applied that with her shooting skills.” Carly Harrison was named best on court, with Danielle Wilson and Lauren Close providing strong support in defence. Walker paid tribute to midcourter Cayley Armstrong, who was the only player not to get on the court. “It’s her first season back from an ACL injury

and she was fantastic throughout the season,” he said. “She was unlucky that our centre and wing attack were our consistent players today. There wasn’t the option to make the move. Just sitting on the bench and being constantly supportive, is selfless.” Walker said he was unsure whether he would return for a second year as coach. “I don’t know,” he said. “I’m making a move for work. I would be happy to leave Riddell in the hands here of the likes of the Closes, Christine Harris … it has a strong back bone.” He said that even if he departed, the Bombers’ trajectory was already well mapped out. “The whole idea of being out at Riddell was

to build the pathways between the A’s and under-19s,” he said. “Kira [Baldwin], Brianna [De Haas] and Meikah [Johns] are all testament to that, along with the other girls who played senior games this year. “We’re building a strong pathway at Riddell and hopefully it keeps going.” Rupertswood won the B-grade, C-grade and under-19 premierships, defeating Riddell in the first two and Macedon in the third. Final hat-trick slips away By Tara Murray It was three times the heartache for Melton in the Hockey Victoria Vic League grand finals. The Mustangs had three teams in grand finals at the weekend, the men’s senior and reserves vic league 3 teams and the women’s reserves in the vic league 2 division, with all three sides suffering the same fate. Mustangs senior men’s coach Glenn Lawrence said it was a disappointing result to end what had been overall a good season. The Mustangs lost to Old Melburnians, 2-1 on Sunday. Lawrence said there wasn’t much that separated the two teams all day. “We scored the first goal that we set up and looked like we were the dominant team. It wasn’t a lucky shot,” Lawrence said. “The first five to seven minutes we were in control of the game. “They then got a lucky call and got a corner, and scored from that. They then later got a another lucky call, and another corner, which they scored from.” Lawrence said while Old Melburnians scored from two corners, it could have been a lot bigger scoreline. “We defended the corners really well, we got just one corner for the game. “To have only a 2-1 result was good and it came down to our defenders doing a good job. “They were very good inside the circle, but it was very even across the field. “Unfortunately the scoreline didn’t reflect that.” Lawrence said experience may have also played a part in the match, with Old Melburnians playing in a lower division than

previously. Despite the final result, Lawrence said he was happy with performances overall, throughout the season. The Mustangs finished third on the ladder, five games behind Bayside and nine games behind Old Melburnians, but were able to match it with both sides come finals. “To come up against the tops teams, and beat one of them and end up in the grand final, makes it a top season,” he said. “Ideally, it would have been nice to win the grand final. It’s been a great season, so we can’t complain.” The reserves side also had a disappointing grand final, losing to Old Melburnians 2-1. “We were the top team going into the grand final, but there had been mixed results against this team,” Lawrence said. “We played very nervous hockey, and didn’t get the result we were after, so it was disappointing.” In the women’s reserves grand final, the Mustangs lost to Monash University, 1-0. The last time the two teams met in the semi-finals, Monash University won 3-1.

Hyundai workshops aim at safe driving and getting to know your car Who doesn’t like scoring a freebie? Not just any freebie, but one to keep you safe and alive on the roads. Harrison Hyundai’s free annual workshop in Melton next month has the potential to save lives; at least keep drivers safe. Hyundai service manager Brad Le Sueur, of Harrison Hyundai in Melton, says the annual Wheels Workshop was developed in answer to strong demand from both male and female drivers. “The workshop is a free vehicle maintenance and safety workshop available to men and women of all ages. It’s designed to get drivers better acquainted with their car and its needs, and how to stay safe on the road,” Brad says. The workshop – at 164-166 High Street, Melton, from 6.30pm until 9pm on Tuesday, October 18 (registration at 6pm) – will cover a range of topics, with advice and hands-on learning. “We try to make it a fun environment. We’ll cover driver awareness, road safety, how to change a tyre, how to start a car with a flat battery and what happens when a car is serviced,” he says. “We’ll also go through basic skills like how to check the levels under the bonnet and what to do in an emergency.” “The annual workshops were previously known as Women in Motion, but we’re now encouraging men to take part, too. Last year we had more than 30 people attend,” Brad says. “Some returned multiple times, bringing along family and friends. We hope the workshop will give our customers more of an understanding of their car’s mechanics and have them feeling more confident when they bring their car in for a check-up.” There’s a limit of 50 people, and booking is essential.
