A special birthday wish By Goya Dmytryshchak Little Logan celebrated his fourth birthday on Monday and his family had a very big wish. After seven months of chemotherapy, Logan’s test results this Friday will tell if he is in remission. “He finished his last treatment on March 2 and we’re still waiting on further tests to see if he’s in remission or not,” Logan’s mother Jo Ashcroft said. “We hopefully find out on Friday.” Logan was diagnosed at birth with a rare genetic disorder called Beckwith–Wiedemann syndrome, also classed as an overgrowth syndrome in children.

“Roughly one in 13,000 people are diagnosed with BWS,” Ms Ashcroft said. “With all of that comes all different complications, like overgrowth in the body, their cells are a lot bigger. “At birth, they’re higher weight, they have enlarged tongues to enlarged organs – there’s all different spectrums of it. “With that, also comes increased risk of childhood cancer because of the rapid growth in their body.” Logan has been screened for cancer every three months from the day he was born. “In May last year, they picked up a cyst in his kidney,” Ms Ashcroft said. “Within a week, he was biopsied and diagnosed with a Wilms tumour. “He went in to a six-week course of chemotherapy. They removed the tumor and a little portion of his kidney.” Brave Logan then underwent another 27-weeks of chemotherapy. The Hoppers Crossing family is determined to help others going through similar circustances. The family has a Relay for Life team, Logan’s Heroes, which raises money for the Cancer Council. One of its fundraising events in the lead-up to this year’s relay will be a car boot sale. The sale is on Saturday, March 24 from 9am-1pm at the Louis Joel Arts and Community Centre, 5 Sargood Street, Altona. Entry is by gold coin donation or $15 for a car. Details: 0407 362 021

A H Ford Reserve update

Loft Reserve update

Hobsons Bay City Council recently hosted a community drop-in session at A H Ford Reserve in Altona West to gather the community’s ideas for the future use and improved development of the local community park. The park includes a playground, a full size cricket oval, seating, a number of mature shade trees and toilet block. There is still time to have your say on the plan for the reserve. Visit http://participate.hobsonsbay.vic.gov.au to lodge your feedback until 30 March or fill in a survey at the reserve in a special marked mailbox. Feedback will assist Council in developing a concept plan for staged park improvements.

The southern oval and cricket net facility upgrade at Loft Reserve is now complete. The project has been a partnership between Council, the State Government, Cricket Australia and Cricket Victoria. Temporary fencing will remain in place for 16 weeks to allow the new grassed surface to establish. The surface will be continually monitored and maintained by Council while the oval remains fenced off. We ask the community to please keep off the oval during this time to give the grass the best chance to grow.

Have your say on Aquatic Strategy

Council is working on an Aquatic Strategy for Hobsons Bay, to guide the development of our aquatic facilities for the next 10 years. We want to hear from you about the aquatic facilities you currently use and what you would like to see in the future. Tunnel tactic overturned By Benjamin Millar Work is back under way on the West Gate Tunnel after the Planning Minister stepped in to over-ride an attempt to halt the controversial project. Workers on the $6.7 billion tollway downed tools last Wednesday after the Liberals, Nationals and Greens united in the upper house of State Parliament, voting 22-18 to revoke planning approval for the works. Focusing his attack on the Greens, Roads Minister Luke Donnellan said the “reckless

parliamentary manoeuvre” had threatened jobs and threw into doubt promised truck bans on some Yarraville and Footscray routes. “We will not let the Liberal-Green coalition sack these workers, roll back our truck bans and deny everyone who relies on the West Gate Bridge the congestion relief they urgently need,” he said. But newly installed western suburbs upper house Greens representative Huong Truong hit back, arguing that the new toll road faces strong community opposition, would make traffic worse and entrench car dependence.

“This is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to reshape the transport system across the western suburbs,” she said. “We need to listen to the experts, who overwhelmingly want more public transport and less giant toll roads.” Planning Minister Richard Wynne signed a planning scheme amendment on Thursday morning, paving the way for construction to immediately resume. Another vote on the tollway could go to the upper house later this month and trigger as yet unspecified “alternative pathways” to get around the approvals process.

Protest shuts down intersection Dozens of protestors shut down one of Australia’s most polluted intersections in a fight against a flagged increase in traffic connected with the $6.7 billion West Gate Tunnel Project. Maribyrnong Truck Action Group organised Tuesday morning’s protest on the corner of Francis Street and Williamstown Road in Yarraville over concerns that Williamstown Road is expected to experience a doubling of truck traffic to 5000 trucks every day by 2030. MTAG president Samantha McArthur said hospital admission rates for children with respiratory ailments in the City of Maribyrnong are among the highest in Victoria. “The West Gate Tunnel Project is being sold to us as a solution, but unless there are improvements on all residential streets, this $6.7 billion project will be a big fail,” she said. Parliament draws ire Hobsons Bay residents who were in Parliament for the successful vote to temporarily halt work on the West Gate Tunnel have slammed the state government for putting the health of children in their area at risk. Don’t Destroy Millers Road member, Brooklyn’s Olexandra Vazhnenko, watched on with her 10-month-old daughter Margaret. “If all of these powerful people just imagine for one second that their kids are going to primary school in Brooklyn … they would never even think to add an additional 7000 trucks a day to a fully residential road here,” she said. Spotswood South Kingsville Residents Group spokeswoman Rosa McKenna, who was also in the house, said she was “disgusted” at the game playing. “Government didn’t complete the approval process properly, then when the revocation motion came, knowing that they didn’t have the numbers, they filibustered for two whole sitting days to delay the vote, just filling in time quoting the support of the big end-of-town from paid ads, and [saying] that Maribyrnong Truck Action Group supports it from inner west and selling their western suburbs heartland out. “MTAG don’t speak for the inner west.” MTAG said in a statement it was “bitterly disappointed” the Greens joined with the Coalition to block planning approvals for the project. Widower loses house in blaze By Goya Dmytryshchak Donations are being collected for a Newport widower and his three young children who lost everything in a house fire this month. Stuart Pike and his children, aged seven, 10 and 14, are struggling to find accommodation after the fire destroyed their uninsured home in Graham Street on March 4. Mr Pike managed to get his children out before the roof collapsed.

The widower, who lost his wife to cancer 18 months ago, returned after the blaze to search for the urn holding his wife’s ashes. Newport Baptist Church has set up a gofundme page for the family and opened up its church for donations such as clothing, toiletries and non-perishable food. Reverend Peter Nielsen, whose children go to school with the Pike children, said the community was rallying around the family. “You look at the plight of people that need

Park yourself right here A new cafe or restaurant could soon be perched above Footscray Park as Maribyrnong council seeks an operator to take over a building in the prime location. The disused building at 1 Mills Close, next to Victoria University, has been identified as surplus to the council’s current needs and ideally positioned for a new hospitality venture. An expressions of interest campaign is under way to find an operator to take over a lease in the building for a cafe or restaurant space, for up to 15 years, with potential for a large outdoor seating area overlooking Footscray Park and the Maribyrnong River. Fitzroys agent Ervin Niyaz, who is managing the campaign, said the council wanted to revitalise the area as part of its Footscray University Town partnership with Victoria University. “The operator has the option to construct a balcony that would provide a great opportunity to capitalise on the views to the Maribyrnong River and beyond to Flemington Racecourse

Rebranding bollards The roll-out of anti-terror bollards across Melbourne has awaken childhood memories of war and strife for the artist behind a striking new exhibition opening in Maribyrnong. Melbourne’s Living Museum of the West will host Bollard City, a solo exhibition by Georgian-born artist Nina Sanadze. Opening this Saturday, the exhibition stands as an exploration of the way bollards have taken on new meaning in our times of heightened fear of terror. Sanadze said bollards have become a symbol of terrorism and the war on terror alike. “In this sense bollards represent desperation, impending danger, fear, paranoia, loss of freedom and restriction of democracy,” she said. “They are also symbols of ignorance, primitive brutality and intolerance.” Sanadze said bollards have traditionally been used as a means to help control traffic, yet their growing use as anti-terror devices has made cities resemble militaristic forts. Her exhibition will place replica bollards into the gallery space in a way that resembles a cityscape, a demolition site and a cemetery. “Bollard Bollard City explores our deeply seated personal anxieties about the transition from Australia as a safe place to one of uncertainty, and how freedom in public spaces can conflict with our desire to be safe,” she said. “The exhibition also examines how this change is affecting our behaviour in public space. My fear is that bollards will clutter the city until it becomes dysfunctional and threatening.” Sanadze’s interest in these questions is not merely theoretical – as a child in Georgia she lived through the Soviet era and collapse. “Seeing the bollards in Melbourne brings back memories of the five years of war I lived through,” she said.

“We’ve got Yamahas, Harleys, Aeriels, Suzukis, Kawasakis and we all get on well,” Mr Chircop said. “Our club seems to gel.” The club has a philanthropic bent as well, raising money for local causes and doing toy runs. “We’re a not-for-profit organisation and every cent we make goes to the community,” Mr Chircop said. “We’ve given Williamstown Hospital $46,000 over the years.

“We just gave Latitude [Altona-based homelessness service] a cheque last year for $2800. “We gave away over $15,000 the year before. “All the money, from membership and whatever else, goes to charity.” The club meets on the first Tuesday of the month at 8pm in the Customs House Hotel in Williamstown. Concerns have been raised about “unsatisfactory living arrangements” after 20 people were found living in a house following a fire in Brooklyn. The Corrigan Avenue property was the scene of two suspected arson attacks in as many weeks. An MFB spokeswoman said 20 people had evacuated during a shed fire at the property on February 17. Firefighters attended a second shed fire on March 1. “Concerns are being addressed regarding the unsatisfactory living arrangements,” the spokeswoman said. Hobsons Bay council officers visited the property four days after the first fire and issued an emergency order to the owner under provisions of the Building Act 1993. A copy of the order was provided to the tenants. It stated the dwelling must be evacuated and occupation was prohibited until power was reconnected. It also prohibited access to the rear yard until asbestos material had been cleared. Officers revisited the property on February 23 and advised the tenants to vacate the premises if the power was not reconnected and if asbestos debris was not removed. Officers visited the property a third time, three days before the second fire, to confirm the tenants had left. There was no one present at the time of the second blaze. Goya Dmytryshchak

The roar of all-comers could be heard from afar as members of the Williamstown Motorcycle Club rode into town last week. The club, which formed in 1930, held a meeting of members at Commonwealth Reserve to recreate an historic photo taken at its inception. The original photo hangs on the wall of perennial old-school pub, the Stags Head Hotel. The club has a membership of more than 100, mainly from the Melbourne’s inner west. President Phil Chircop said the club was formed by Len Bevis, who ran a garage in Williamstown’s Douglas Parade on the site of the iconic Detroit building. “After World War II, the club broke apart and then it was reformed in ’95,” he said. Its ethos is: the Willi Club is rider and brand independent – all are welcome. There are sports bikes, cruisers, classic, vintage and off-road bikes, and you don’t need to live in Williamstown.

Seaside venue’s new chapter By Goya Dmytryshchak An iconic Williamstown restaurant setting has been leased for 21 years in what has been described as a “once in a generation opportunity”. Hobsons Bay council has leased the Williamstown Dressing Pavilion – known for a long time as Sirens restaurant and more recently as Shelly’s Beach Pavilion – to Bathing Pavilion Pty Ltd. Shelly’s Beach Pavilion held the lease after Sirens restaurant was placed into liquidation in

2014 to pay a tax debt, creditors and workers. A spokesman for Bathing Pavilion said renovations would take place before an opening launch in August or September. “We are very excited to be taking over such an iconic venue in Williamstown,” he said. “Over the coming months we plan to totally renovate the interior and rebuild a deck to create a better connection with the beach, while protecting its heritage and ensuring the community can enjoy the space for many years to come. “We look forward to being a meeting point

for locals and a food and wine destination in the west. “While I can’t reveal too much about the menu right now, I can confirm that we are working on an all-day menu across restaurant, bistro and take-away offerings.” The Rotunda – the licensed kiosk on the same site – has been re-leased to existing operator Red Engine Group. Sole director John Mousaferiadis said he planned to renovate the kiosk – which sells coffee, ice cream and fish and chips – but introduce changes on the upper level.

“I tendered for only my premises, not the pavilion,” he said. “They’ve renewed my 21-year lease. “I was the original person who transformed it from an old derelict bandstand to what it is now. “My plans are to continue as it is, but the cafe upstairs will be transformed and changed over the winter into Vietnamese food, which will specialise in just beef and chicken pho.” Hobsons Bay mayor Angela Altair said the seaside venue was well loved by locals and Melburnians from far and wide.

Totem totally worth it “immediately arresting” and “boldly displayed great strength, power and balance”. “The sea eagle form atop the column rests comfortably on the upper edge of the shield and appears to look down toward the supporting strong hand holding its perch,” Mr Williams said. “The facial expression of the creature and its demeanour provides an enigmatic capital to this deeply human column.” Seafarers’ Totem and the sculptures of 21 finalists will be displayed at the Montalto estate in Red Hill South until the end of October. All except Nicholls’ piece are for sale. The exhibition is open daily from 11am-5pm and entry is free. Goya Dmytryshchak Mike Nicholls with Seafarers’ Totem, winner of the Montalto Sculpture Prize. Williamstown’s Mike Nicholls has been awarded one of Australia’s richest private sculpture prizes. He has been announced winner of the prestigious Montalto Sculpture Prize, a $30,000 acquisitive award, for his piece titled Seafarers’ Totem. The 3.3 metre-high cypress pine sculpture was described by Nicholls as “evoking a sense of protectiveness”. “The iconography of the shield, hand and sea eagle can be viewed as a purely abstract sculpture, or its symbolism will more than likely have a different meaning to each individual viewer,” he said. “My work is based on personal motifs that I have developed over the years to comment on the fragility of humanity, and the environment.” A member of the judging panel, Peter Williams said Nicholls’ sculpture was

By Goya Dmytryshchak A man who used fake identities and swindled more than $250,000 in bank loans and property has lost an appeal to reduce his three year minimum jail term. Jake Matthew Friel in 2016 was sentenced to four years and four months’ prison with a non parole-period of three years after pleading guilty to more than 20 deception-related charges. The sentencing judge found 26-year-old Friel’s crimes were motivated by ice abuse and a need to repay drug debts to people “euphemistically described as … motorcycle enthusiasts”. The offences included crimes at Altona North, Caroline Springs, Wyndham Vale, Caroline Springs and Sydenham. The Supreme Court this month rejected Friel’s appeal that his sentence was manifestly excessive. The court heard the total amount of property he obtained by deception was more than $256,000 while the total amount Friel tried to obtain was more than $409,000. Aside from a Mercedes Benz, no other property was recovered. Most of Friel’s crimes happened in an 11-week spree from November 2015. His crimes included using stolen identity documents to buy more than $5000 jewellery from Michael Hill jewellers at Pacific Werribee, including a wedding band. Using a false driver’s licence in another man’s name, Friel opened an account at Hoppers

Crossing ANZ, taking out a $30,000 loan and receiving $27,000 cash. He opened another account at Werribee ANZ with the same fake licence and received a further $27,000. Police caught Friel running a red light in a BMW at Point Cook and discovered his licence was fake. A search of his coupe found four more driver’s licences. He was arrested and bailed in December, 2015. While on bail, he used a fake licence to open another account at Wyndham Vale ANZ. However, his attempts to obtain more loans would start to fail. After his application for a $28,000 loan was rejected, he tried in a different name and was again refused at Caroline Springs ANZ. The court heard Friel had another failed attempt at Watergardens ANZ, before switching to a different modus operandi. On February 5, 2016, Friel applied for an online loan for $57,000 with ANZ before attending the Altona North branch, but was unsuccessful. He returned to the same bank three days later to apply for a $30,000 loan. When he returned to the bank to finalise the loan, he was arrested. The court of appeal judges in their ruling comments said although Friel pleaded guilty at an early stage, his sentence was appropriate. “The offending was of a serious and repeated nature, and would have continued if Friel had not been arrested and charged,” Justice Kim Hargrave said.

On a new crusade The Western Crusaders Gridiron Club has forged a unique partnership with Maribyrnong College. The program will deliver gridiron as part of the sport education curriculum in 2018. Western Crusaders Gridiron Club president Bruce Parke said the partnership offers year 8 students an opportunity to develop skills and appreciation for gridiron. “We are excited to work within the sport education program at Maribyrnong College, which has one of Victoria’s most successful sports academies, the Maribyrnong Sports Academy,” Parke said. “We look forward to engaging the students through our creative coaching within the sport education model run at the college.”

Weekly sessions will include skill development and drills for flag football and gridiron, as well as playing games and scrimmaging so everyone gets a chance to apply the skills they have learned in a game setting. Maribyrnong Sports Academy sports director Mark McAllion said the partnership provided a great chance for students to experience a sport most have never played before. “We look forward to the partnership increasing the number of our students participating in community sport, and maybe even providing another option for those student-athletes with professional sport ambitions,” he said. Pupils of parliament Victoria University students have taken a historical step by becoming the first in Victoria to study at State Parliament. Law and Justice students this month spent two days meeting with officials, enjoying unprecedented access to Parliament’s hallowed halls. The exercise was a chance to visit the coalface to discover how laws are passed through both Houses, and explore the role of parliamentary committees. First Year Model Lecturer Kathleen Raponi said the new collaboration between Victoria University and Victoria’s State Parliament is an innovative approach for students beginning their first year of studies.

“This is much more than a tour of Parliament – this is a remarkable opportunity for Law and Justice students to get a behind-the-scenes look at complex legal processes and how our State is managed,” she said. “Now these students have exclusive access to officials and key Parliamentary people who can help bring the Law and Justice curriculum alive.” Clerk of the Legislative Council Andrew Young said Parliament was really pleased with the partnership. “The students gained an understanding of Cabinet processes, bills in the Parliament and parliamentary committee inquiries direct from people involved in those processes.” Benjamin Millar

Take a bite of the best of the south By Ewen McRae

barbecue joints where you can get your fill of succulent ribs or mouth-watering brisket. I loved Peg Leg Porker, but follow your nose and you’re sure to find something to salivate over. And if you want some of Tennessee’s famous

whiskey go to Corsair Artisan Distillery for a tour and tasting session with a difference. Moving on from Nashville, a three-hour drive west will find you in Memphis; the home of blues and the birthplace of rock and roll.

A good starting point to get an overview of the town’s music legacy is to go straight to Sun Studio and do the tour there. Music luminaries such as Jerry Lee Lewis, B.B. King and Johnny Cash all recorded some of their breakthrough

Blues, barbecue, and bars. No trip to America (in my view) would be complete without a stop or two in the south to experience all of these things, and the variety on offer as you cross each state line or shift from each city is an experience worth adding to your bucket list. As a part of the country with so much to offer I’m surprised more Australians don’t visit there, the South is perfectly suited to a road trip through some major cities and immersing yourself in the food and music. A good idea would be to start in Nashville, Tennessee, hire a car and make your way westwards. Nashville itself has a huge amount to offer, and not just that they play both kinds of music; country and western. I would recommend finding accommodation within walking distance of Broadway (the main restaurant and bar area in town), and from there you’re well placed to get out and explore. Near the top of the list for any trip to Nashville has to be the famous Ryman Auditorium, better known as the home of the Grand Ole Opry, and worth a tour even if you can’t see a show there. Near the Ryman is the Country Music Hall of Fame, which I enjoyed even though I’m far from a connoisseur, and if you still need a country music fix head to the Johnny Cash Museum for a closer look at the man in black. A night out in Nashville is best down along Broadway, where live music is king and the whole city comes for a good time every night. Every bar will have its own spin on live music, but for a more authentic country experience I’d recommend Robert’s Western World for a genuine honky tonk hoe down. For food, there’s any number of good

hits here, and it is also where Elvis Presley got his start and shot to worldwide fame. Once you’ve had a musical grounding you’re ready to head out to Graceland itself, for a very thorough look at the home of Elvis, as well as thousands of historical artifacts, gold records, cars, jumpsuits and guitars used by the king of rock and roll. Continuing the music theme, no trip to Memphis would be complete without a visit to iconic Beale Street to sample the blues. Much like Nashville, every bar will have live music on all night, and whether you’re looking for some chilled out blues, up tempo rock or dancing rockabilly you’ll have plenty of options. Pro tip: The Blues Hall has the most authentic blues band experience. Don’t forget to have some cash on hand to tip the bands, they play for free and rely on tips from the audience. While Memphis is a musical mecca, it’s also a significant city in the civil rights movement in America, and the National Civil Rights Museum is well worth checking out. The museum is next to the motel where Dr Martin Luther King jnr was assassinated in 1968, and covers 300 years of struggle for African Americans from slavery until today. It’s a no holds barred look at a bleak part of American history. If music and food are as big a part of your travel experience as they are for me, I’d recommend adding Austin to your itinerary. Known as the music capital of the world, and with the famous South By Southwest festival lighting up the town every year, it’s a diverse and thriving city with a wide gamut of options. Much like Nashville and Memphis, there is a concentration of music venues and bars on 6th Street, and for more of a local flavour head along Red River Street and catch a gig there.

You can’t visit Texas and not sample the barbecue on offer, and if you have the chance to go to Franklin Barbecue you will not be disappointed. Be warned, people camp out from 5am daily to sample this place, so be

prepared for a bit of a wait in line, but trust me it’s worth it. This is just a taste of the south, and there’s so much more to explore, but you have to save something for the return journey.

OUR DAILY BREAD A good friend of mine up Gisborne way recently did something she’s been wanting to do for ages – she enrolled in a sour dough bread-making class, and has been raving about it ever since. She’s been turning out these little mini-loaves (see photo) almost on a daily basis, filling her home with the irresistible smell of freshly-baked bread. But bread making does require some patience and dedication, so if doing it from scratch seems a bit overwhelming, you might consider doing the next best thing and buying a bread maker.

The fully automated Panasonic SD-ZB2512 doesn’t just churn out regular fluffy white, rye and French bread, it also creates sour dough bread (using a long fermentation process) as well as lovely artisan varieties to which you can add herbs, nuts, cheese, fruit or whatever you fancy. Using the various baking modes, you can also make pizza dough and perfect fluffy scones in it. And the 100% gluten free bread program enables you to bake gluten-free loaves, using a variety of gluten-free bread mixes and flours. Better still, it has a jam and compote mode, to make your breakfast complete. The Panasonic SD-ZB2512 retails for around $399.

The elevated deck opening from the open-plan living area adds to the sense of space. It steps down to a small lawn with room for a cubby house and garden. Four generous bedrooms have built-in robes, two with original restored fireplaces, the main with an en suite and walk-in robe. The whole package is picture-perfect inner-city family living. Enjoy the best of Footscray, with schools, transport, shopping and Barkly Street all nearby.

This generous circa 1910 Edwardian has been updated with artful care and attention. Subtle period-sensitive cosmetic and structural renovations add to the mood of adventure and possibility that early Edwardian architecture evokes. From the burnt yellow feature wall set against timber panelling in the meals area, the evergreen garden beyond; to handcrafted built-in cabinetry all made from reclaimed hardwood, this house tells a story. The huge attic has been converted into a large, light-filled and breezy bedroom with

hydronic heating. French doors open to a private balcony with city views. Vaulted ceilings, Japanese-style built-in robes and hand-crafted Jarrah built-in cabinetry all made from the same re-claimed hardwood as the herringbone parquetry flooring looks as if it has always been there. Step down Australian brush box hardwood stairs with generous under-stair storage to the wide hall and landing. The main bathroom has a double-length shower and a corner-set vanity featuring beautiful laser-cut hardwood doors with a

subtle carp motif. It suits the Edwardian aesthetic beautifully. There are two large bedrooms at the front of the house. Both have Moroccan-style carpeting and original and well-maintained fireplaces with timber surrounds. The large sash windows let in filtered light thanks to the deep front porch. The second bedroom has two sets of hand-crafted hardwood built-in robes. The formal sitting room is a substantial space with an ornate original fireplace, soaring ceilings and hardwood Baltic pine floorboards.

The country-style timber kitchen has a clear view of the backyard, a butcher’s rail and a 900mm Smeg stainless-steel oven with a six-burner gas cooktop and a walk-in pantry. Walk out to the meals area where the Aga cooker has pride of place. French doors open out to the undercover deck with views of the lush garden. Walk to the train station and cafes and enjoy the romance of this era in a beautiful residence that offers the best of the old world and the new. Samantha Freestone

Looking further forward however, such striking land proportions (measuring 597sqm approx.) will anticipate any number of desires. Two character-filled bedrooms downstairs feature soaring high ceilings and original fireplaces, traits reflected with equal élan in the spacious formal lounge. The upstairs retreat or third bedroom exhibits an evocative combination of herringbone parquet floors and vaulted ceilings that draw the eye to balcony glimpsing the city skyline. Off-street parking. 49 John Street, Williamstown An approach to design and construction that eliminated compromise and placed the highest priority on quality was clearly the impetus behind the creation of this landmark home, a refined, relaxed residence that serves with unparalleled success when the kids are six – and will still do so when they’re sixteen. Living and dining spaces that bring everyone together for enjoyment and entertainment by the alluring lap pool are complemented by a superb Carrara marble kitchen featuring the full suite of smeg appliances and a separate alfresco barbeque bench and bar. Alternative upstairs and downstairs main bedrooms, each accompanied by a sophisticated marble ensuite, set the luxury level for three further bedrooms that share a superb third Italian fitted bathroom while a light-filled office and flexible children’s lounge/play-room enhance this home’s first class family credentials. Above the double garage, which is accessed from second frontage to Napier Street, the ultimate ‘man cave’ reveals brilliant, bright spaces framed front and rear by balconies – a spectacular conclusion to a residence that’s unequivocally in a class of its own, equipped with every imaginable comfort and advantageously located around the corner from Douglas Parade shops.

49 MARIBYRNONG & HOBSONS BAY STAR WEEKLY \ MARCH 14, 2018

FOOD REVIEW STARWEEKLY.COM.AU

CONSIDER THE SAUCE It’s all Greek to Kenny Weir, especially at this value-for-money stop We are eating from yucky polystyrene – and it’s all our fault. Well … sort of. If we’d made clear our eating intentions – to have our dinner right there, beside the food truck that is Greek Gypsy – we’d have been provided proper crockery. Oh well … As it is, we do get metal cutlery as we proceed to enjoy our meals. And very good they are, too. The outdoor furniture that accompanies the Greek Gypsy routine may not be any less disposable than the polystyrene containers. But the food is every bit as delicious and enjoyable as that to be had at the other Greek enterprises that have been unveiled in our greater neighbourhood in recent months. From the compact menu, both Bennie and I choose open gyro plates ($14), with a mix of lamb and chicken. The meat is outstanding – both juicy and chewy, the lamb having a slight edge. Toasted pita goes good with a generous serve of excellent tzatziki. The salad bits? Just OK. Chips ($5) are just the teensiest bit too oily. But otherwise, they are hot, crisp and yummy – and, like the meat, way better than we have been expecting from this food truck operation. One of the dinner options we had been contemplating this night, just down the road apiece, would’ve run to a minimum of $80 for the pair of us – and quite probably more than $100.

GREEK GYPSY Address: 545 Macaulay Road, Kensington Phone: 0423 709 769

OPEN GYROS PLATE

Yet here we are, sitting atop Kensington Hill, having spent a fraction of that and grinning like happy fools as we eat like kings. Life is grand!

SPORT Roosters’ semi-final run chase a fizzer the way with a patient 79 and Johnathon Blake adding 52. Keilor was bowled out for 102, with Clubbers bowlers Emmett Bronca (3-18) and Damjanovski (3-17) snaring three wickets apiece. The Clubbers will meet Doutta Stars in the grand final. The Stars disposed of Seddon by six wickets. Seddon was always going to struggle after posting just 127. It took the Stars 73 overs to reach the target, but they eventually got there. In north-west division, the weekend was disappointing for Druids and Altona North. Druids, the minor premiers, were knocked out by fourth-ranked Haig Fawkner in a two-wicket loss. Druids posted 9-215 declared, with Haig Fawkner passing the target in the 75th over.

Altona North was bitterly disappointing in a 153-run loss to Sunshine United. Set 222, North was bowled out for just 68 in 40 overs. In west A1, Williamstown Congs were eliminated in the cruellest manner – as the lower ranked team following a tie with Grand United. The Congs made 202 and all that United had to do to book its place in the grand final was to match it, which it did. Gellibrand was eliminated in a heavy defeat to Seabrook. In north-west B1, Williamstown CYMS earned a grand final spot in a 47-run win over St Andrews Pascoe Vale. Ben Gorton, with 87 of CYs’ 209, and Tarique Jeffrey, with 6-30 that had the Saints all out for 162, were the keys to the victory. CYs will face Deer Park in the grand final. Lance Jenkinson

Tough task for Seagulls As the minor premier, Williamstown went into the opening week of the Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association north-west finals last weekend knowing it could not be eliminated straight up. Now the Seagulls need the double chance they earned in the home-and-away campaign. The Seagulls let the qualifying final slip from a match-winning position against Plenty Valley on Sunday, going down narrowly by six runs. Their home ground advantage ceases for the remainder of the finals – and they face a daunting trip to Melton in the semi-finals. Seagulls all-rounder Craig Sheedy concedes the route to the big dance will be tougher after the first-up finals loss. “It’s always a tough ask out there at Melton,” he said. “We played well against them in a one-dayer out there, so it will be a good game.” Williamstown only has itself to blame for missing out on a home semi-final. Set a testing 234 target, the Seagulls appeared on track for victory midway through the second day’s play, but were bowled out in

the last over for 227. Brent McMinn and Dale McDonald provided rock solid foundations for the Seagulls, their 97-run partnership moving the score to 3-128. McMinn made 53 off 100, including seven fours and a six, while McDonald top-scored with 55 off 140, also with seven fours and a six. “Dale and Brent got us in a really good position,” Sheedy said. “They both batted beautifully and were just cruising along on a difficult wicket. “We could’ve kept nudging it around and done it easy in the end, but unfortunately a couple of bad shots were played at the wrong times.” Plenty of middle and lower order Williamstown batsmen got starts, but none could occupy the crease for long enough to take their side to the target. The Seagulls’ batsmen got bogged down by tidy Plenty Valley bowling and a dead pitch that aided the bowling side. Sean Ayres was the chief destroyer for Plenty Valley, taking 4-54 off 34 overs, including 17 maidens. He put the ball in the right areas and the batsmen reacted with impatient strokes.

■ After 15 seasons my time as one of the radio team covering the WRFL matches is over. My weekends in football season have been frantic, juggling my time between the WRFL, Werribee Football Club and the Western Bulldogs, hosting lunches and pre-game entertainment and running and being part of the radio calling team. That is not a whinge – it was my decision and I loved the challenge. I love suburban footy and the people involved in it, they are the salt of the earth. I had planned to be involved this season in a slightly reduced capacity, but that was not to be. I will still follow the fortunes of all clubs and when time permits will definitely be at games around the west. I will also still be writing about suburban football in this column. I want to publicly thank the clubs and the club people because they are the reason I did it for so long. ■ The match day broadcasts will continue on WYN FM with some new faces and I wish them well. Over the 15 years there were some challenges both on and off air but everyone survived to tell the tales. Steve Thom was with me from day one until part-way through last year. Together we built a match day coverage that was as good as anything going in local footy. Our team has included some pretty impressive people over the years including Candice Wyatt (Network10) who got her first on-camera experience with us, doing after-match interviews for our TV show. Tony Schibeci called games for us before joining SEN. Edward Sadler – now a leading racing commentator in Hong Kong – called games for us, as did Tim James who went to SEN and has been a golf commentator for many years. Andrew Muscat – our stats king and the WRFL historian – started with us and now works for the Bulldogs. Finally, special thanks to Krume Sazdovski, a WYN FM volunteer who has been responsible for the technical set up for the last decade or more. What a trouper, what a tireless worker and a friend.

IN THE DOGHOUSE

“It was really difficult to get him away,” Sheedy said. “Blokes pretty much had to push forward and try to keep them out. A couple of poor decisions and it costs you the game.” In a thrilling last over, Williamstown needed 10 runs, Plenty Valley one wicket. After picking up four runs off the first two balls, the Seagulls were one maximum away from the win. On the third ball of the over, tail-ender Jarrod Flood-Bauce, who had made the team’s third top score with 19, tried to finish the game in one fell swoop, only to get caught on the boundary. Williamstown was disappointed not to start the finals with a win, but there is no time to dwell on that result. “Everyone was fine after the game,” Sheedy said. “It’s always disappointing to lose, but it wasn’t as if we weren’t in the game.” Yarraville was bundled out of the finals in an unceremonious fashion, losing to Melton by seven wickets at MacPherson Park. The Eagles were abysmal with the bat, conjuring just 70. Melton cruised to victory, three down in the 28th over.

■ Williamstown enters the fray of women’s VFL football this year and has named Sarah Chapman as its inaugural captain. It was a very big moment for a club with such a history of incredible leaders over the years. The former St Kilda Sharks 100 game player will be on the honour roll alongside the likes of Barry Round, Terry Wheeler, Ron Todd, Gerry Callahan, Max Papley, Saade Ghazi and Troy West. Altona Roosters have become the latest in a long line of victims of star-studded Westmeadows, eliminated from the Victorian Turf Cricket Association north-west A1 finals. The Roosters were behind the eight ball after day one of the semi-final at Willowbrook Reserve when the Warriors amassed 254 off 75.2 overs. Ashleigh Peters (4-34) and Chris Dine (4-32) worked hard against the tide for the Roosters, but the Warriors still found a way to a match-winning total. The Roosters’ run chase was fruitless – they were all out for just 94 in 32 overs. Dine top-scored for the Roosters with 20, capping off a strong individual game. In senior division, Yarraville Club cruised into another grand final with a 120-run win against Keilor at Hansen Reserve. The Clubbers made 222, with James Damjanovski leading

City defends decision to forfeit over pitch conditions Altona City president Joe Tanti has defended his club’s decision to forfeit last Saturday’s FFA Cup clash with rival Hoppers Crossing. Tanti was not satisfied with the state of the synthetic pitch at Grange Reserve and did not want to put his players in a situation he perceived to be a safety risk. Tanti and the committee made the decision to forfeit the game after talking with other clubs that had played on the same pitch in the weeks prior and following a pitch inspection undertaken by committee members. “When the game got fixtured, we had an idea that it would be played on that ground due to Hoppers Crossing’s main pitch not being ready,” Tanti said. “We spoke to a couple of teams that had played on it the weeks before and word got back to us that a lot of boys had pulled up sore and didn’t go to training on the Tuesday. “If you pull up sore enough that you can’t train on the Tuesday, three days after you’ve played, I dare say the players were more than

just leg weary. We weren’t prepared to risk our boys on that surface.” Hoppers Crossing’s main ground is currently unavailable to host matches due to re-surfacing works. An artificial ground at Grange Reserve is used for Hoppers Crossing training sessions, pre-season friendlies and FFA Cup games because of its all-weather surface and match-standard lighting. Hoppers Crossing president Joel Gribben said he had received no complaints from his own players or the clubs that have used the venue. “We train on it a minimum twice a week during the season and three times a week during pre-season,” Gribben said. “We’ve hosted seven or eight games on it this pre-season, with no particular serious injury or anything along those lines associated with it. “We’ve played an NPL team, state league 1 and other state league teams, none of which has expressed concerns. We would not put our players on any pitch that we believe would risk

their safety or their ability to play the season out.” But Tanti was not budging. “It’s fairly old and worn out, a few patches have been put in where people have pinched artificial grass off it,” he said. “The case was that this actual pitch is not up to standard as far as we are concerned. I spoke to Joel Gribben and we offered a facility, a neutral ground. “We were willing to pay for a few things and would’ve helped them out financially, but they didn’t take it. They wanted to play at home and it was their right to do that.” City has copped a barrage of abuse on social media about its decision. Players have been labelled precious, but Tanti said it was a decision that he and his committee made, not the players. City forfeited its $120 entry fee into the FFA Cup and was eliminated from the competition. Lance Jenkinson

Footscray has snapped its three-game losing streak just in time to confirm its place in Premier Cricket finals. The Bulldogs finished the home-and-away rounds with a 32-run victory over Melbourne at the Merv Hughes Oval on Saturday to clinch fifth place. Set a target of 193, the Bulldogs passed the target seven down en route to 7-224. Hayden Butterworth hit 72, with other important knocks coming from openers Greg Munro (24) and Matt Underwood (34) and middle order batsmen Travis Dean (32) and Tim Buszard (29no). Footscray will scrap it out with fourth-ranked Monash Tigers in a two day semi-final at Central Reserve this weekend.

A focused Jake Carr is looking ahead to his title fight at the Westgate Sports and Leisure Centre on Saturday. (Damjan Janevski)

Carr driven to compete By Lance Jenkinson Newport boxer Jake Carr is primed and ready for his shot at the vacant World Boxing Association Oceania middleweight title. Carr will take on fellow Melburnian Tej Pratap Singh over 10 rounds at the Melbourne Pavilion on Friday night for the right to lay claim to the belt. “The preparation for this fight has been really good,” Carr said. “I started my training camp in Sydney, sparring with Bilal Akkawy, who is an Oceania super middleweight champion. “That was a really good, strong way to start off my sparring preparation and it’s pretty much gone up since then. “I’ll continue getting fitter and I’ll be very sharp leading into this fight.” Carr is back to his mental and physical peak in boxing. The 27-year-old admitted his mind was not in the game for about 18 months and he took time out of the ring following the tragic death of his dad Rod in 2016. But Carr’s return to fighting last year was

a successful one, contesting five professional bouts for five wins to take his career record to an impressive 16 wins, six by knockout and one loss. “I went through a stage, probably for about a year and a half, where I was a fairly inactive,” Carr said. “I had the tragic passing of my dad, who was also in my corner and was one of my trainers. “In 2017, I jumped back on the horse and since then it’s been really good.” Carr returned to boxing for no reason other than he loves the fight game. Since beginning training under Dave Hedgecock and Boxer John at Boxer’s Corp in Oakleigh, Carr has found a new lease of life. “Boxing is the sort of sport where you have to want to do it,” Carr said. “I don’t do it because my dad loved the sport or because he was a former Australian champion or for any other reason than I love the sport. “They’ve really taking me to new levels. “I’ve been grateful for the work of those guys.” Carr is expecting a hard battle against Singh,

who has a record of nine wins and four losses in 13 bouts. He respects the Singh camp and knows the quality of fighters that come out of their gym. “I’ve seen him fight a few times and I know that he’s extremely fit and he’s extremely strong,” Carr said. “It’s not going to be an easy fight at all.” Carr, who attended local schools Williamstown primary and Williamstown high as a youngster, wants to launch into 2018 in style. This year is about taking giant strides towards a top-15 ranking. “I really hope this is a big year for Team Carr,” he said. “The Oceania title would be a very good title to have next to my name and it will help towards us being ranked in the top 15.” It will be a big night of fights on the Brian Amatruda-promoted event at the Melbourne Pavilion. Blake Caparello will take on Isaac Chilemba for the WBA Oceania light heavyweight title and Michael Zerafa will contest Adam Harper for the vacant Commonwealth super welterweight title.

Western Bulldogs let a chance to nail an AFL Women’s grand final berth go begging with an 18-point loss to GWS Giants in the penultimate round in Canberra on Saturday. The Bulldogs will get a second chance to clinch a spot in the season decider when they play Melbourne in a final-round blockbuster at the Victoria University Whitten Oval this Saturday night. Should the Bulldogs not beat Melbourne, they will need both GWS Giants and Adelaide to lose their matches in order to reach the grand final for the first time.

FFA Cup

Yarraville Glory has started its FFA cup campaign off on a high note, twice coming from behind to beat Brunswick Zebras 5-2 at Sumner Park on Saturday. The Zebras took the lead twice in the opening 11 minutes, scoring either side of a goal to Glory’s Louis Paraskevas. The Glory then piled on three unanswered goals through Darcey Den Ouden, Driss Ben Hadj and Diego Ortiz Alvarez to lead 4-2 at half-time and added another in the second half through Chris Velluto.

TAC Cup

Western Jets opened the TAC Cup girls’ season with a 37-point loss to Bendigo Pioneers at Epsom Huntly Reserve. The Jets’ three goals were kicked by Isabella Grant, Cleo Saxon-Jones and Sharnie Whiting. Isabelle Pritchard was named best for the Jets.
