It’s not all elementary The action and intrigue of Sherlock Holmes has been combined with the seduction and wonder of an underground Berlin cabaret in Sunshine theatre company, wit incorporated’s latest production. A Scandal in The Weimar is the latest offering in the company’s commitment to creating a year of works by women. “This is not just about getting women on stage – it’s about making sure those women … are as diverse and as interesting as the women we see on the street,” co-writer Jennifer Piper said. “So our characters have differing cultural backgrounds, habits, sexualities and political views. They are flawed and human and so much more than whatever their tick-box on a census would be.” The show will be performed by Piper, Sarah Clarke, Emma Hayden, Kimberley Heberley, Tanya Hendy and Ebony McGuire. It has been co-written by Claire Bowen and directed by Belinda Campbell. It will be performed at Bluestone Church Arts Space, Footscray, from August 25 to September 9. Tickets: $25. Housing project revealed A leading social housing provider has lodged plans for a new project in Footscray to help tackle the state’s growing affordability crisis. Unison Housing is proposing a $9.4 million development at 52 Napier Street, on a 935 square-metre site currently occupied by single-storey social housing. The six-storey, 57-unit proposal is one of the single largest social housing projects flagged for the area in recent years. A town-planning report submitted with the proposal notes the site presents “a unique opportunity” to increase the availability of housing close to public transport, public open space and a “wide range of community and educational offerings”.
Speaking during Homelessness Week (August 7-13), Unison Housing chief executive Michael Perusco told Star Weekly the project has been driven by the housing affordability crisis in Melbourne. “One of the key ways of tackling this is to increase the supply of social and affordable housing options,” he said. “This site is already providing affordable housing and has been for decades. We have got the opportunity to increase the overall supply.” Unison Housing has built a number of similar projects, including the 71-unit redevelopment of the Barkly Hotel in Footscray. Mr Perusco said developing their own properties was the most cost-effective way to house the highest number of people at risk of homelessness. He said the problem should also
countries and large cities,” he said. “We certainly would call upon the state government to do more about that.” Community group HousingAIM – Affordable, Inclusive Maribyrnong has thrown its support behind the proposal. Spokeswoman Kate Breen said HousingAIM was concerned about the decline in housing affordability across Maribyrnong and the implications this has for the community. “Developments like this are very welcome, particularly when they are so well located … lower income households have opportunities to benefit from everything Footscray has to offer.” Feedback on the proposal is due to Maribyrnong council by August 15.

A man fatally attacked in West Footscray on Saturday night was a cousin of the woman found dead at a hotel buck’s party last month. Marcus Rowley, 24, of Epping, had returned from his cousin’s funeral in Perth only three days before he was attacked at Tottenham station. Australian soldier Natasha Rowley was found dead in the shower of a Melbourne serviced apartment on July 16.
The room had been rented by a group of 11 men from ACT and NSW on a buck’s night. Mr Rowley’s former partner, Caris Miles said he was a beautiful, loving father to three children. “He was such a good person. He made his fair share of mistakes but he learned from them and was turning his life around,” she said. Mr Rowley posted a picture of himself and Ms Rowley on Facebook on July 18. Paramedics were called to Ashley Street in West Footscray about 7pm on Saturday night.

A Sunshine North towing and transportation company has been fined $275,000 in the Melbourne Magistrates Court after the death of an employee at Williamstown two years ago. JMAL Group employee Greg McRae was given the job of loading and transporting a boom lift crane from Williamstown to Melbourne Airport on August 5, 2015. About 4.55am, Mr McRae collected the crane from a company called IN2 Access Services. The usual procedure was to load the crane in the public road. The court heard it was dark and raining as Mr McRae loaded the crane onto a trailer in Darbyshire Street. A delivery van driver was travelling about 40-50km/h when he saw the cage of the crane, without lights, in the centre of the road. The driver tried to stop but the side of his van hit the cage with Mr McRae inside. Mr McRae was critically injured and died in hospital a number of days later. WorkSafe initiated the legal action against JMAL Group. JMAL Group pleaded guilty to failing to provide a safe system of work and failing to ensure members of the public weren’t exposed to risks to their health and safety. It was ordered to pay $275,000 plus $12,000 in costs.

Wales Street works draw ire By Benjamin Millar Gas leaks, scratched cars, “intolerable” noise and other troubles have left residents of a Kingsville street fuming at “botched” roadworks. A Maribyrnong council contractor began rehabilitation works in Wales Street in February this year, including rebuilding the bluestone kerb, drainage upgrades and road re-sheeting. But residents say after six months of mud, dust and loss of parking they are fed up with
the works, which were supposed to have been finished by April. Wales Street resident Dianne Ferrara said the works have been a disaster, with a litany of blunders pushing people to the end of their tether. “It’s just a series of botches. My car and other cars have been scratched. There was a leaking gas pipe left unattended – imagine if someone had come along with a cigarette? “I was told that they had to redo a section because they had miscalculated by about 500 millimetres.”
Ms Ferrara said she felt there was no sense of urgency about the works being completed. “They kept disappearing off to other jobs and nothing would happen for weeks,” she said. “Needless to say we are beyond frustrated, we are putting in a report to the ombudsman.” Other residents have raised concerns about excessive mud, dust, noise, the quality of the works and damage to their property. Council’s infrastructure services director Sunil Bhalla said the delays were created by the amount of rock found during construction and works to preserve nature strip trees.
“The completion of the project has also been delayed as some sections were not completed to our satisfaction and needed to be replaced by the contractor,” he said. “We expect this to be completed in two weeks’ time.” Ms Ferrara said the situation raises questions about the council’s process for contracting out work. But Mr Bhalla said the contractor was employed following a confidential competitive tender process. He said residents were notified of delays via letter drops and door-knocking.

Italian nonna Rosa Simon-Oston was born in the Calabrian countryside where life was simple and the food was from the land. The 77-year-old Altona North resident said she was born in wartime when food was scarce, so her family used “product from the ground”. Residents are being invited to make submissions for the book, which will feature stories, photos and recipes highlighting Hobons Bay’s community, in which more than 30 per cent of residents were born overseas. “Back in Italy, we had this plate on Sunday after we went to church in the morning,” Ms Simon-Oston said. “My mother prepared this special plate for Sunday dinner.” She said the pasta was made by hand, with an instrument like a wooden knitting needle used

Guard jailed for sexual assault By Goya Dmytryshchak A former security guard has been jailed for repeatedly raping a girl after picking her up near Newport railway station. Wajahat Abbas, 44, was sentenced by the County Court to eight and a half years jail with a minimum of six years for the 2015 assault. He has been placed on the sex offenders register for 15 years. It is not known if the Pakistani national will have his visa cancelled on release.
The girl, then aged 15, was in the care of the Department of Human Services and had just been placed with a new foster family. On the night of the assault, she had missed the last train at Newport and didn’t know how to get home. The court heard Abbas was conducting a security patrol. He saw the girl and asked if she wanted a lift home. After she got in the car, Abbas said he worked
for a security company and first had to do some jobs. These were in isolated and deserted industrial areas. He then drove her around for about an hour, parking on several occasions and raping her three times. County Court judge Michael Tinney told Abbas he should be ashamed of himself. “This was not momentary offending,” he said. “You stopped the car and performed an act covered by the charge, then moved to a
different location and committed a fresh act.” The court heard Abbas was married with two children and had travelled to London and other cities in Europe to help others establish restaurants. He came to Australia in 2013 and was subsequently granted a protection visa. After he was charged and bailed in 2015, he fled to Nepal and then Malaysia before returning to Australia in December and being taken into custody.

Police have released images of a man wanted for questioning about the stabbing of two men on a tram in Footscray. Dramatic video footage emerged during the week of the moments after a man pulled out a knife and stabbed two passengers on Friday, July 28. Footage filmed on a bystander’s smartphone shows a man, who was dragged from the stationary route 82 tram, lying in the middle of Geelong Road as another person used a piece of clothing to apply pressure to a stab wound. It is believed the men, aged in their 20s, were on a tram travelling north along Droop Street about 8.45pm when they were approached by another man. The unknown man stabbed both victims before fleeing the scene on foot along Geelong Road. One man was treated at the scene for upper body wounds before being taken to Royal Melbourne Hospital in a stable condition. Another man was taken to the Footscray

Rent levels ‘a grim situation’ By Goya Dmytryshchak Only three per cent of rental properties are affordable in Hobsons Bay and Maribyrnong, according to the Council to Homeless Persons. The two areas have been placed in the top 15 metropolitan municipalites where affordability has declined most in the past 10 years. A decade ago, 34 per cent of rentals in Hobsons Bay and 27 per cent in Maribyrnong were affordable, which is defined as less than 30 per cent of a person’s income.
Homelessness services have launched a “100K Homes” campaign, coinciding with Homeless Week from August 7 to 13, calling for 100,000 new social housing properties nationally over five years. The median rent is $390 a week in Hobsons Bay and is $380 a week in Maribyrnong. A single person under 22 with no children receives $218.75 a week in unemployment benefits and someone over 22 gets $267.80. Commonwealth rent assistance can be up to $65.
Altona-based homelessness service Latitude: Directions for Young People said that from its perspective, finding affordable rentals in Hobsons Bay was unachievable. Manager Rhonda Collins said she was aware of advertisements asking $115 a week for just a bed – sometimes just one level of a bunk bed. “We can’t actually get young people into private rental,” she said. “Altona Meadows used to be an option. Not really, anymore. “Laverton, you might still get the odd one, but we are moving people further out and
that’s not good because you’re just increasing the disconnection.” Council to Homeless Persons policy manager Kate Colvin said even areas such as Melton had made the top 15 for affordability decline. “It’s a grim situation for low-income earners who find that there is nowhere to escape high rents,” she said. Latitude will hold a free barbecue for Homelessness Week at Laverton Community Hub, 95-105 Railway Avenue, from 10am-3pm on Friday, August 11.
Prep pupils across the inner-west have celebrated their 100th day of school. Footscray North Primary School teacher Shanna De Brincat said her preps had been counting down the days to last Thursday’s 100-day milestone, doing lots of number activities along the way. The preps still have plenty to look forward to this week, taking their very first school excursion – a bus to Collingwood Children’s Farm on Wednesday. Benjamin Millar

HAVE YOUR SAY Precinct 15, Altona North Strategic Site
Hobsons Bay City Council invites the community to have their say on the future of an approximately 67 hectare parcel of former industrial land in Altona North.
BiGfiSh industrial designer Chris Goff and mayor Catherine Cumming. (Damjan Janevski)
Flights of fancy take off A Footscray design company is soaring to new heights with its latest project – a new million-dollar playground for Braybrook. BiGfiSh has been commissioned to design and create the new aeroplane structure that will replace the wooden Aeroplane Park, destroyed by arson in December 2015. The new playground, adjacent to the Braybrook Community Hub, will include a giant steel aeroplane with swings beneath the wings, seesaws and a double flying fox. The space will also include exercise equipment, open lawn, a scooter and trike track and upgrades to the community garden and picnic area. Endorsed by council late last year and initially due to open in June, the new playground is now
hoped to take shape by summer. Industrial designer Chris Goff said the new play structure honours the theme of flight, in memory of the former park. “The wings are inspired by classic aluminium planes like the Douglas DC-3, with just enough detail for kids to imagine that they may have flown once upon a time,” he said. “It’s been a lot like building a giant model aeroplane.” Maribyrnong council is contributing $837,031 to the project, funded by an insurance pay-out following the arson, while the state government is chipping in $205,000. Mayor Catherine Cumming said she was thrilled that the new park was taking shape.
The amendment can be viewed at participate.hobsonsbay.vic.gov.au at the Hobsons Bay Civic Centre or any Hobsons Bay Library. Submissions close 1 September.
Council and the Victorian Planning Authority have been conducting drop-in information sessions where community members can find out more about the application and make submissions. The next session is:

The tract of land earmarked for redevelopment. (Supplied)
Brakes on station plan Plans to redevelop a vast tract of land at West Footscray railway station have been quietly put on the backburner. The 5000-square-metre site between Cross Street and the railway line, opposite Whitten Oval, was earmarked for redevelopment in 2014. The land’s owner, VicTrack, last year advertised for expressions of interest for a development partner to redevelop the site with multi-storey apartments above small retail spaces. “If developed, the site could provide people with housing and retail close to transport and the CBD,” a fact sheet on the project stated. “It would also attract more people to the area, and create a safer and more attractive approach to the eastern end of the station.” But all references to the project were removed from the VicTrack website last month.
From 27 August, all weekday services will run direct between Altona and Flinders Street Station. To learn more about the changes, visit ptv.vic.gov.au/metrochanges
VicTrack spokeswoman Jo Mayall told Star Weekly the land’s strategic location near West Footscray station and Whitten Oval means its potential must be maximised. “Since we initiated the EoI process in late 2016, we have become aware of opportunities for the broader West Footscray Station Precinct,” she said. “We have therefore decided that it is better to fully understand these opportunities before we further consider any proposals for the site.” Ms Mayall would not indicate whether any expressions of interest had been lodged before the project was put on hold. She said Whitten Oval was one of the sporting precincts being assessed by a ministerial working group ahead of the release of a sporting stadia strategy by year’s end. Benjamin Millar

VU vows action on harassment By Benjamin Millar Almost half of all surveyed Victoria University students reported being harassed last year, with a quarter reporting incidents taking place either at or travelling to or from the university. More than 500 VU students took part in the ‘Change the Course’ study by the Australian Human Rights Commission. The national study of more than 30,000 students, released last Tuesday, was undertaken following pressure on Australian universities to tackle sexual harassment and sexual assault on campus. The study found women at VU were far more likely than men to experience sexual harassment, mostly on public transport on the way to or from university. In four out of 10 incidents in a university setting the victim knew the perpetrator, usually a fellow student. The survey found 7.3 per cent of VU respondents were sexually assaulted at least once in 2015 or 2016, including 0.7 per cent in a university setting. Only five per cent sought support and assistance from VU and even fewer made a formal complaint. About half had ‘little or no’ knowledge about where at the university they could report sexual harassment or assault or seek support and assistance. Victoria University vice-chancellor Peter Dawkins said the university has a zero
tolerance approach towards sexual assault and sexual harassment. “This kind of behaviour hurts and devastates peoples’ lives.” Professor Dawkins said the university will establish a central point of response and support, provide specialist training for security staff and implement the ‘Respect and Responsibility: Preventing Violence Against Women Ten Point Plan’.
‘‘

Universities Australia chair Margaret Gardner said the 10-point plan will ensure the right support for students who experience and report unacceptable behaviour. “This report tells us that, while much has already been done, we have more work to do to prevent sexual assault and sexual harassment in student communities.” Support is available via: • VU 24/7 student counselling 9919 5400, staff counselling 1300 327 288 • National university support line: 1800 572 224 • 1800 RESPECT: 1800 737 732 • Lifeline: 131114 • Beyond Blue: 1300 224 636

“This is a multi-faceted project that will integrate literacy and numeracy with pressing social justice issues that include Australia’s treatment of asylum seekers, respect for the environment and the level of disadvantage in our wider community,” Mr Green said. “The program will develop student awareness of social justice issues and will be formative assessment [reflective] rather than summative [graded],” he said. “It has already made them aware the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre is in the next suburb.” Mr Green said the school planned to integrate the preliminary project – which ends in December – into its future curriculum.
A group of Braybrook students is taking part in a pilot project to provide food for the disadvantaged as part of their school curriculum. Almost 20, year 10 VCAL students from Caroline Chisholm Catholic College are involved in the 10-week Garden Collective project which aims to grow and harvest leafy greens and vegetables for the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre which has a base in neighbouring Footscray. The school’s faith and mission director, Bernard Green, said the project focused on social justice and educating students about food security, and those most at risk of not having reliable access to affordable and nutritious food such as refugees and asylum seekers.

MY PLACE An accidental journey on the wrong train was the catalyst for a love affair with Footscray for immersive artists ‘the indirect Object’, otherwise known as Beth McMahon and Michael Bevitt. Beth speaks with Benjamin Millar We’ve lived in Melbourne for 10 years, and almost six of those years have been in Footscray. I discovered Footscray by accident back in 2009. I got on the wrong train one night, had a walk around and thought, one day I’m going to live here. Footscray reminds me of the neighbourhood I grew up in, I felt at home immediately. What do you love best about the area? You can really just be yourself, good day, bad day, dressed up or wearing Ugg boots – Footscray doesn’t judge. There’s a beautiful community spirit here, and we wouldn’t want that to change. Footscray is evolving quickly and we’re nervous about all the development going on. How has living here shaped your creative practice? There’s such a vibrant and diverse arts community here. We’re very inspired by the work being created locally. We’ve been fortunate enough to develop some really interesting, immersive projects and workshops with local organisations for local community events. Footscray has put more heart into our projects. What are your favourite local places?
I like to walk along the Maribyrnong River at night. I go most nights we’re home. I love the rail bridge near the Heavenly Queen Temple, the train lights flicker along the path in the most hypnotic way. We also love Footscray Park, it’s where we were married a few years ago. What should we know about the indirect Object? That we really like trying new things. We’re both puppeteers, but puppetry requires so many different skills that we don’t have one style of work anymore. What we create depends on the project and who we’re working with, but it all comes down to connecting with people. We create installations, performances, puzzle rooms, and giant puppets. Some projects are for adults, some for families, others just for children. What can people expect from Moore Sweet Dreams, and what are you hoping visitors will take away from their experience? Moore Sweet Dreams is like a love letter to Moore Street. We love Moore Street, but love can be complicated. Each room has a different theme, with a different atmosphere. We’re trying to capture different aspects of how it feels living here, so we hope visitors feel comfortable, that they sit on the couch or lay on the floor, and just soak in the installations.

It’s the school’s most significant building project for 50 years and features 14 classrooms, specialist learning studios and labs for STEM, art, music and language; a new library and resource centre, an auditorium, gallery and individual instrumental tuition rooms. St Catherine’s principal Michelle Carroll says as literacy is at the heart of all learning, the new library and resource centre has been located at the heart of the new Barbreck building’s design. “Its central location means the girls will walk through the library and resource centre every day,” she says. “Reading is a shared experience for younger children, so parents and grandparents will also be encouraged to visit.” To ensure Barbreck’s new facilities reflect the latest learning innovations and technologies, Michelle and junior school head Alana Moor researched learning space design in Australia, the US and Britain. “I visited girls’ schools in New York, where the STEM agenda is flourishing and clearly lifting access to science and technology, with students busy coding, designing and building,” Michelle says. St Catherine’s has placed a high priority on STEM learning in recent years with girls encouraged to consider careers in STEM industries. “Our junior school students will have the advantage of a purpose-built STEM lab and a specialist STEM teacher, and know that STEM learning is just as important as music, art and
language,” Michelle says. Another key influence was the design of the Royal Children’s Hospital, with its welcoming and inclusive environment and use of graphics on glass. These ideas have inspired Barbreck’s design. Michelle says St Catherine’s junior school has a proud history of achievement, laying the educational foundation for generations of women – leaders and pioneers of industry, philanthropy, medicine, law and music. Former students include Victorian Governor Linda Dessau and Lady Southey, the state’s lieutenant-governor from 2001-2006. Liz McLachlan

After the new junior school building is completed in the middle of next year, the existing buildings will be demolished to make way for a new landscaped play and sport precinct, The Village Green (left). Securely enclosed within the school campus, The Village Green will have a perimeter running track, strength and agility play equipment, a vegetable garden and quieter sitting spaces.

Built at the dawn of the Edwardian era, this piece of Williamstown history was completed in 1910. Every room has multiple ornate flourishes typical of the era. Past the huge front garden with room for a trampoline, walk down a meandering path to the wide return front porch and enter to a wide hardwood-floored hall – typical of most larger Edwardians, as are the high ceilings and ornate timber flourishes. The first of five bedrooms, all with built-in wardrobing, is to the left. A generous L-shaped front living room follows. It is currently used as a library and sitting room.

Auction: August 19 at 1.30pm
Here ornate federation-era fret-work heralds a picturesque box bay window with sash window frames – perfect for sitting with a cup of tea and watching the world go by. The fireplace with timber surround makes leaving harder. Bedrooms two and three, all with hydronic heating, are found from here. A contemporary main bathroom gives a nod to the federation-style with black-and-white floor tiling. The family room has a big bay window and a second fireplace creates atmosphere. The kitchen-meals area is really the heart of this house. It boasts an impressive and
large kitchen. All that bench space makes a home cook slightly envious. Here, no matter how many dishes you have on the go, there will be room. Catering for parties will never be an issue with plenty of prep space and still spacious surrounds for guests to mingle. Two more bedrooms, both with built-in wardrobes and hydronic heating, help round out this picture of family bliss. Renovated to be a robust and spacious residence, this is a property for a family wanting large outdoor spaces so weekends can be enjoyed without having to venture beyond.

Outside there are large lawned areas, a decked pergola and even room for a cubby house. Just a little further afield are Williamstown Botanic Gardens, Nelson Place and the communty bustle of Ferguson Street and Douglas Parade. The property is just a few blocks from Williamstown Beach and its train station, so morning walks with the family down to the foreshore could become tradition, perhaps even to watch the sun rise. CONSIDER THE SAUCE Kenny Weir puts DeGrill under the griller We applaud the opening of DeGrill at Sunshine Marketplace. It’s a bold and adventurous move – it is situated, after all, right opposite Maccas and right next door to the cinemas. I could say that DeGrill is aiming for the same sort of focus as Grill’d or Nando’s – but that would be doing DeGrill a disservice because the menu is significantly more broad than such a comparison might imply. Over two visits, CTS and friends enjoy some good food and good service at (mostly) good prices. The style is classy fast food and proper cutlery and crockery are in use, as are fine salt and pepper grinders. There are three hot dog options on the menu, two featuring kransky or chorizo. But the classic ($7.50) is constructed using a standard frankfurter. So all is regulation here, but its recipient is pleased enough. “Crispy” chicken ($9.50) has the wow factor aplenty. The serve consists of three superbly cooked wings anointed with a tangy sauce. It’s very good – especially when served with a side of mash and gravy ($6). The menu’s “between the buns” section lists nothing that could be described as a beef burger, but based on our table’s orders of the cheese steak ($9) and the only marginally different philly cheese ($9.50), this may be the way to go here. Both are keenly priced and boast good ingredients and dressings. The steak is thicker than routinely found in steak sandwiches and, best of all, is so well
DEGRILL Address: Sunshine Marketplace, Sunshine Phone: 0402 189 860 cooked that biting through for a mouthful is done without the whole sandwich falling apart. Under the heading “from the grill”, DeGrill offers dishes such as a flat iron steak ($17 and $26) and chicken ($16 for half, $29 for full). These and others may fulfill the implied promise of more hefty meals. Sadly, the beef short ribs ($16) do not. It’s common knowledge, too, the beef ribs can be fatty, but these are very fatty indeed, and the three segments amount to not much more than a brief meal of not many more mouthfuls. The coleslaw ($4.50) lacks crunch – maybe because its main component is savoy cabbage? It’s under-done in the seasoning/flavour department, too, though some quick work with the salt and pepper grinders soon fixes that up. CTS is over the mega shake thing – too often they seem to involve poor quality ingredients and unjustifiably high prices. This DeGrill brownie shake ($9) defies both factors – good price, nice shake. We wish DeGrill well. Maybe its arrival will inspire others to hang out their shingle in the same locale. SPORT Determined Falcons nail finals berth City West Falcons have finally qualified for the Victorian Netball League championship division finals. After a loss the previous round, the Falcons needed a win against bottom side Ariels in the final round of the season to seal fourth spot. The result was never in doubt for the Falcons, who led by 13 goals at the first break. They extended the lead at every break to win 81-29. The one-sided affair gave the Falcons’ coaching panel, led by Marg Lind, scope to work on a few things heading into finals. “The first quarter was really good and we never took our foot off the pedal,” Lind said. “We mixed things up a bit and tried a few different combinations to add a bit of diversity to the team. We were looking for more defensive turnovers and we got that, which
took off some of the pressure.” The Falcon shooters had a night out, with Jane Cook (32 goals) and Kath Knott (30 goals) missing only one attempt each. Lind said Cook, who returned to the side midway through the season after finishing Super Netball League commitments, was improving each week. “Jane adds that element of size and that may be useful in a final if we need to score goals quickly,” Lind said. While the Falcons qualified for finals, they’re in the unusual position of playing an elimination semi-final. In recent years, the Falcons have finished in the top two and secured double chances. Last year they lost the grand final by one goal. The Falcons will face Geelong Cougars in Wednesday night’s elimination encounter.
With a couple of former Falcons players and a former Falcons coach part of the Cougars’ set up, Lind knows it will be a hard match. The teams split their two matches during the season. “They know us inside out,” Lind said. “They’ve got a good line-up with Australian Netball League and state players in it.” The Falcons are one of two clubs to have all three of its teams playing in the Victorian Netball League finals. The Falcons’ division 1 side finished third, while the under-19 side won the minor premiership. “It means a lot to have all three sides in the finals,” Lind said. “A lot of ground work has been done.” Tara Murray

fans love the romance of the father-son rule. Recruiting managers hate it. The Bulldogs have a rich vein of talent at the moment in that regard, with Zaine Cordy, Mitch Wallis, Tom Liberatore and Lachie Hunter running around in the red, white and blue as their equally famous fathers did. Two premiership players, Liam Picken and Josh Dunkley, were overlooked as father-son picks by their fathers’ clubs. Recruiters will tell you there is no sentiment allowed when choosing players, and that is probably true when you see Josh Wallis and Jayden Foster both on the Footscray VFL list. Neither was picked up under the father-son rule. Last weekend, Jacob Smith (son of Rohan and Allison) made his VFL debut for the Dogs’ as 23rd man. The Bulldogs have a few more exciting prospects waiting in the Susan Alberti Creche at Whitten Oval. Kellett, MacPherson, Dimattina and Liberatore are all being closely monitored. It is a part of football tradition I hope we never lose.
■ Glenorden
is looking to rejoin the WRFL in 2018 in division 3 after sitting out the current season. Phil Crea, a well-known footy and cricket identity in the west, has secured the job as senior coach and other appointments will be announced in the coming weeks. At Point Cook, Brett Jacobs has signed on as assistant coach to Ian Denny.

Werribee Park Golf Club professional David McKenzie celebrated his 50th birthday last week by playing in his first seniors tournament. David turned the big 5-0 the day before the British Open seniors teed off. He played well, finishing tied for ninth and capped off a bright debut by acing the eighth hole in the final round. His cheque of just over $50,000 would have been very welcome for the golfing journeyman. The leaderboard boasted big names such as Bernard Langer (winner), Corey Pavin, Fred Couples and fellow Aussie Peter Lonard.

Dogs’ reversal of fortune Two months ago, Footscray’s season in the Hockey Victoria men’s premier league was almost shot. Eight unbeaten games later and a finals’ berth is back on the cards for the red hot Bulldogs. “Our season was almost gone, but we haven’t lost a game in the last eight weeks,” Bulldogs coach Phil Merriman said. “The destiny is still in our hands because we’ve got a game in hand as opposed to the other teams around our area on the ladder. “If we keep playing the way we’re playing and keep following our process, which has been the key word for the past eight weeks, not worrying too much about the results or who we’re coming up against and just worrying about our process, we could be playing finals.” Footscray’s form line is as good as any in the competition since June 7. The Bulldogs were staring down the barrel with just two wins and six losses after eight games. Their next eight games have yielded five wins, three draws and no losses to sit just one
point outside the top eight. Two of those draws came against the runaway top two, including a 2-2 tie with Greensborough at the Footscray Hockey Centre on Saturday. A number of factors led to Footscray’s turn around in form, not least Merriman swallowing his pride and accepting his game plan was not being fully grasped by a young team. Merriman admitted that he arrived in his first year with “some bold plans as far as the game plan”, but decided it needed simplifying. “We have slowly introduced some of those things I wanted to bring in earlier on, but it will be a slow burn,” Merriman said. “It is a really young group and we’ve just got to be patient.” The addition of import Rufus McNaughtBarrington, who has averaged a goal a game in four appearances, has been huge for Footscray. It’s also no coincidence that Footscray’s results have improved since defender Mitch Braiden returned. He has organised the Bulldogs defence, along with captain Sam McIntosh. The pick of the Bulldogs in Saturday’s draw
with Greensborough was midfielder Oscar Allan. “He had a huge impact against a team that has Australian representatives across most lines,” Merriman said. “He had to come up against Tim Cross and Daniel Mirecki, who have both played for Australia, and was outstanding.” Meanwhile, Altona remains fifth on the ladder, following an entertaining 3-3 home draw with sixth-placed Southern United. The Seagulls are in action tomorrow night against Melbourne University at the Greensborough Hockey Centre from 8.30pm. In women’s premier league, Footscray had a 2-2 draw at home against Greensborough on Saturday. Georgia Hopkins and Jade Versteegen were the goalscorers for the Bulldogs, who are five points clear in the eight. Altona moved further clear of the relegation zone with a 4-1 mauling of Southern United at home. The Seagulls will have mid-week hockey against Melbourne University at the Greensborough Hockey Centre tomorrow at 7pm.
FC will host a lunch this Friday at the Williamstown Town Hall featuring Craig Bellamy and Adam Cooney. Williamstown’s big lunch will be on Friday, August 18, in the club’s function centre, with Leigh Matthews, Tim Watson and Daniel Harford. The Altona Vikings will host their annual Legends lunch on Friday, September 15, with Phil Carmen and Brad Hardie. Kevin Hillier

Young guns step up as experienced players sign off The hard calls were made by the Altona Gators with an eye on the future. The Gators promoted youth to the starting line up in the latter rounds of the Big V basketball men’s division 2 season and farewelled two of their more experienced players in the process, including veteran Justin Eckhardt. “Justin was a really important part of the team for the past two years,” Gators coach Des Radoslovic said. “He’s been our leading scorer, but he’s 34 years old now and getting towards the end, and he also had an internal club suspension. “I thought at the time, regardless of the suspension, it’s probably best if we call it a day for his season and it gives the younger guys an opportunity to play heavier minutes. “He carried the team through some tough times over the past year and a half, but now the young guys are ready to take his place, so the timing was just right.” The other player to exit Altona was recruit Aron Pantano. Injuries and poor form hampered his short stay with the Gators. “He probably didn’t deliver what we expected
and stepped aside about six weeks before the end of the season,” Radoslovic said. “His role was reducing in the team as the young guys were stepping up and overtaking him.” Amid the changes, Altona unearthed its potential back court for next season. Nathanael Coory did not look out of place as the Gators starting point guard, while Jeremy Edwards showed his talents at shooting guard. “They’ve turned into key players for us down the stretch,” Radoslovic said. “Those guys are both matching it with the opposition’s best players.” Coory belied his youth, running the show with aplomb from the point. He is just 16, but has a wise head on his shoulders. “He’s exactly what you want your point guard to be,” Radoslovic said. “He’s very safe with the ball, he does his job and he’s very smart.” Coory is also smart academically, which could shorten his time at Altona. He recently trialled at Princeton and Penn universities in the US with a view of landing a scholarship. “He got invited to some talent identification camps at Ivy League division 1 schools. He
went quite well in those and he’s grown in confidence since,” Radoslovic said. In the past 10 games of the season, Edwards has reached double figures in points on seven occasions. His long range shooting was lethal, including five three-pointers in the final round, equalling his best for the season. “At the start of the season, he was down the end of the bench because it was his rookie season, but by the end of it he’s playing heavy minutes and he’s a starter,” Radoslovic said. The other player with an exciting future is centre James Till. He produced his best performance – a monster double-double of 25 points and 17 rebounds – in a penultimate round win over finals-bound Wallan Panthers. “He’s another one of our young and developing players,” Radoslovic said. “He’s our six-foot-seven big man and only in his second year of representative basketball.” Radoslovic is keen to continue working with the young talent at Altona and will meet with the club to discuss a contract for next season. Lance Jenkinson
Ton of fun for Cloke By Lance Jenkinson Spearhead Jason Cloke was the toast of Parkside after notching his 100th goal for the season on Saturday. Cloke kicked seven goals in the Magpies’ 100-point mauling of finals contender Sunshine Heights in the Western Region Football League division 3 at Henry Turner Reserve on Saturday. “It’s a fantastic achievement for Jason and the club,” Magpies coach Nick Condos said. “It’s great for the competition to have a player of his quality in it.” Cloke is easily the most high profile player to have been part of the division 3 competition. The 35-year-old played 76 games for Collingwood in the AFL, including the 2003 grand final. His career in the big league came to an end in 2006, but he has continued to build a memorable career in the suburbs. Cloke played for Williamstown and Bendigo in the VFL before moving to play with Spotswood and Craigieburn. With Spotswood, he was a playing assistant coach and played in a premiership. Cloke signed on with Parkside as a playing assistant, but the lure was to play alongside his brother-in-law Justin Dorward. He has fitted into the Magpies line-up seamlessly. “Jason’s obviously a big focal point, but we try to share it around,” Condos said. “Everyone thinks we just kick the ball to him, but he gives it off just as much as he gets it too. “He brings back his knowledge from playing at a higher level and inserts some of that knowledge back into the group.” Aside from Cloke’s milestone, Parkside had an important game to win against a tough opponent that moves it closer to securing top spot for the finals. Condos was pleased with the Magpies ability to withstand the physical heat offered up by Sunshine Heights. Once the Magpies won the contested ball and released to their running brigade, they were hard to curtail. “They’re a real contested ball side, so for us to get the win like that was real good for our confidence going into next week,” Condos said. Luke Gauci, Thomas Deutschbein and Stephen Campbell were the chief ball winners for Parkside, while Jack Collard continued his goalkicking form with three majors, taking his tally to 24 in 14 games. Parkside can wrap up the minor premiership against second-placed Wyndham Suns at Henry Turner Reserve on Saturday. Condos reckons the Suns, who beat them first time around, will be the team to beat in the finals.

Newport star tops in state Rising Newport swimming star Daniel Cave has taken out the 2017 Victorian Junior Swimmer of the Year award. Cave was unable to accept the honour at the Swimming Victoria annual awards night because he was competing at the FINA World Championships, but word got to him while he was overseas. “I’m honoured to receive the Victorian Junior Swimmer of the Year award, it’s great to be recognised,” Cave said. Cave achieved a record time in the boys 100 metre breaststroke to claim gold at the 2016 Australian State Teams Age Group Short Course Championships. The 18-year-old posted 1:00.05 in the final. In the 50 metre breaststroke at the same event, he set a meet record time of 27.18. Cave was part of the mixed 4x100m medley relay at the FINA World Championships and the team scooped a silver medal. He also competed in the 100m breaststroke, finishing 20th. Lance Jenkinson

“They’re the yardstick,” he said. “We’re coming up against the best side in the comp and see how we’ll fare.” Elsewhere in division 3, Laverton only kicked one goal against a powerful Wyndham Suns, losing by 90 points at Goddard Street Reserve, while Braybrook could not spoil the 50th anniversary celebrations of North Sunshine, going down by 98 points. In division 1, Altona moved back into

the top five after a 116-point thrashing of Wyndhamvale on the road. Daniel O’Leary kicked three goals in a best-on-ground performance for the Vikings. Spotswood could only manage three goals in a 70-point loss to Hoppers Crossing. In division 2, Yarraville-Seddon found its best form in a 107-point hammering of West Footscray on a day when Scott Krakouer jagged six goals.
Williamstown stalwart Ben Jolley will bring up his 250th Victorian Football League game against Werribee Tigers at Burbank Oval on Sunday. Jolley, 31, will become just the eighth player in VFA/VFL history to pass the milestone. The hard-nosed midfielder is a four-time Gerry Callahan medallist for best and fairest at the Seagulls and was captain of the club’s last premiership win in 2015. Williamstown remains second on the VFL ladder, following a comfortable 65-point win over Coburg Lions at Piranha Park on Sunday. Footscray kicked 6.5 to 0.2 in the last quarter to overrun Northern Blues by 13 points at Ikon Park. Billy Gowers was best for the third-placed Bulldogs with three goals, while Josh Dunkley had 24 disposals and 10 tackles in a successful first game back after a shoulder injury. Lance Jenkinson

Footscray Rugby Union Club has bowed out of the Victorian Rugby Union Dewar Shield premiership race. The Bulldogs were beaten 30-17 by Box Hill in a hard-fought semi-final at R.H.L. Sparks Reserve on Saturday. Martin Naufahu, Florian Peyrat and Faimata Nimarota scored tries for the Bulldogs.

Western Jets have produced one of the shocks of the TAC Cup season, knocking premiership contenders Oakleigh Chargers off top spot. In a game between the top and bottom sides in the competition, it was the unfancied Jets who came away with a memorable six-point win at Burbank Oval on Saturday. “The last six weeks we’ve played the top six teams,” Jets coach Torin Baker said. “It was good to finally crack through for a win.” Western Jets had to dig deep to get the win. The undermanned Jets were seven points down at three quarter-time and two rotations short on the bench after injuries to key players Zak Butters (quad) and Nick Stuhldreier (concussion). One of the Jets’ top onballers, Lachlan Fogarty, was also lame with a corked calf. Fogarty was forced to stay inside forward 50, so the Jets would not go a further rotation down. “It was nice for the boys to fight it out and get the reward,” Baker said. When the match was there for the taking, it was the highly touted Cameron Rayner who stepped up for the Western Jets. Rayner showed his class with a long goal on the run at the start of the last quarter to give the Jets momentum. “It was a big moment in the game, running through the middle of the ground and popping it through from 55 metres out,” Baker said. Jets backman Luke Hitch worked hard to quell his opponents, usually dangerous small forwards, and provided drive out of defence. Aided by a friendly fixture, the Western Jets are still in with a hope of reaching the finals. The Jets play the three sides directly above them on the ladder, starting with Northern Knights at RAMS Arena on Saturday morning.
