Bilingual classes dropped ‘‘

We have concerns about the process

’’

- Nicholas Cowell

“The decision has been about ensuring our curriculum is clearly focused and addresses the challenge of FPS having too many priorities,” he said. “Our first priority is ensuring all our students – including those from non-English speaking backgrounds – get a strong grounding in literacy, numeracy and inquiry to set them up for future success and learning.” But Mr Cowell said many families had chosen the school on the basis of the bilingual program, whether they were from Vietnamese backgrounds or simply attracted to the benefits of bilingual learning. The group of parents is seeking a freeze on the changes until an independent review is carried out. A petition against the changes is being circulated at the school and an online petition had attracted close to 80 signatures by Tuesday.

Victoria’s only Vietnamese bilingual school program is set to be axed after Footscray Primary School decided to dump it from its curriculum. But a campaign is under way to save the language-immersion program, one of only a dozen in the state and the only one of its type in the western suburbs. A group of parents is seeking urgent intervention from Education Minister James Merlino to save the school’s long-running practice of classes being taught in Vietnamese for up to five hours a week. Parents found out about the dumping via a school newsletter sent home late last month. School principal Philip Fox cited concerns of some staff and problems with a crowded curriculum as factors in the axing from next year. The newsletter stated a “leadership team” had reached the decision to cut language learning back to two hours a week based on curriculum feedback from more than 150 families over 18 months. But a number of parents have told Star Weekly they were blindsided by the move. Nicholas Cowell, who has two children at the school, said the program had run for close to two decades and the decision would change the identity of the school. He said parents were dismayed by the lack of consultation and questioned whether all families even realised the decision had been made, given the newsletter was sent home with pupils and not translated into Vietnamese. “We have concerns about the process and that the decision doesn’t recognise

the value of the program,” he said. “My children find the subjects to be challenging but in a positive way.” According to the education department’s website, benefits of bilingual education include increasing respect for other cultures. In a written response via the department, Mr Fox said the decision followed almost two years of consultation through a working group comprising teachers, school council members and parents.

MADDIE JANSSEN AND JESSICA GALLAGHER

Pedal to the medal Seddon Paralympian Jessica Gallagher, 30, has made history as the first Australian to win a medal at summer and winter Games. The vision-impaired cyclist, with pilot Maddie Janssen, set a Paralympic record time en route to a bronze, adding to medals she collected in the 2010 and 2014 winter Games. Gallagher’s record was soon bettered, but the medal brought sweet relief after she missed out on the 2008 Beijing Games in controversial circumstances. ■ Full story, page 7

Come cheer on Around the Bay cyclists while enjoying a day out in Altona on Sunday 9 October. The 50km ride starts and ends in Alexandra Gardens in the city with the route taking riders through Spotswood, Newport and Williamstown before turning around at Logan Reserve in Altona, where the Altona Beach Break takes place. Free entertainment will be provided by the Hobsons Bay Band between 9.30am and 12pm and riders in the 210km ride will pass through until around 6.30pm. Council has sponsored the event to encourage cycling as a sustainable mode of travel and to promote Altona as a cycling destination. You may notice black sand and an unpleasant smell coming from the dog beach at PA Burns reserve. Don’t panic! This is just sediment from the annual dredging of Altona Safe Harbour. About 5,000 cubic meters of sand is removed from the boat harbour and channel to clear the way for boats before being stored on the dog beach. The sand will turn black and release an odour before returning to its normal sandy colour. Dredging will continue until the end of October but the channel will be cleared in time for the Snapper season. Sections of the dog beach may be closed during the dredging operation. These works have been approved by the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning and the EPA.

Smokers are urged to help reduce cigarette butt litter in Hobsons Bay. A range of initiatives will be introduced at litter hotspots throughout the municipality to encourage smokers to do the right thing. There are no bins on the Altona pier as per Parks Victoria’s ‘take your rubbish with you’ philosophy so please use the closest bin on Council managed land. This program is funded by the Victorian Government.

The Cooraminta Laverton North Kindergarten and Maternal Child Service Centre in Whittaker Avenue is receiving a much needed upgrade to respond to the growing need for early childhood services in the area. The upgrade will increase the capacity of the service to provide additional four-year old kindergarten places and allow for the introduction of new early childhood services, such as three-year old kindergarten. This project was funded by the Department of Education and Training and Hobsons Bay City Council. The centre will reopen in time for the beginning of Term Four.

Street tree pruning If you live within the Merton Street, Central Avenue, or Point Cook Road area of Seabrook and Altona Meadows, you may have noticed some pruning works taking place. The pruning is part of our ongoing Council-wide maintenance program which includes a bi-annual tree health check. The trees are inspected to check they’re healthy, safe, and compliant with power line clearance and road traffic legislation, and pruned where neccessary. We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause. We’ve also been busy planting new trees. This year’s planting season has seen approximately 2,500 trees and shrubs planted across Wetlands Ward,

Trains to freight jobs into west By Goya Dmytryshchak More than 1300 jobs will be created after the state government announced a $2 billion package to build 65 new Metro trains at Newport. The Evolution Consortium, comprising Downer Rail, CRRC and Plenary, will build the fleet at Downer’s Newport railyard, which will receive a $16 million upgrade. Downer chief executive Grant Fenn said the

project would create 1100 full-time Victorian jobs as well as more than 140 positions for apprentices, cadets and trainees, and 70 jobs for disadvantaged workers. Industry and Employment Minister and Williamstown MP Wade Noonan said about 500 of the jobs were likely to be at Newport. “It’s a wonderful jobs outcome, which also includes an agreement with Toyota to transfer as many of their workers [as possible], and retrain those workers, next year to help assemble

those trains at the Newport rail workshops,” he said. “We’re guaranteeing more local work than ever, with 60 per cent local content as well as ensuring the inclusion of 15 per cent Victorian apprentices, trainees and cadets, and

a partnership with Toyota to help transition workers out of the auto industry. “From a jobs point of view it will probably mean an additional 500 jobs at Newport will be created during the life of this contract.” The Newport workshops began operating in 1882 and at their peak in the 1950s employed 5000 workers. But only half of the 48.5-hectare site is currently active, with the remainder used for storing old trains.

DONNA JACKSON

Donna captures the art in industry Sparks literally flew at Friday’s program launch for the first Art and Industry Festival in Melbourne’s west. The brainchild of Newport’s Donna Jackson, who heads Hubcap Productions, the festival looks at the industrial and manufacturing aesthetic of Hobsons Bay. “Industry is a fantastic lens with which to look at this area because it has complexity; there’s a whole architecture and design in this area,” she said.

“There’s tanks. We’ve got the West Gate Bridge. We’ve got a whole lot of manufacturing and mega-factories and plants around here, and I really like that aesthetic. “I’m one of those people who goes out at night and photographs the Newport power station or the Mobil refinery or the tanks, and then I meet other people who are also out there taking photographs of those architecturally-designed industrial spaces. And I thought, maybe I’m not alone, maybe I’m not the only one who thinks

they’re interesting. They’re what make us different from a lot of other places and makes this area unique.” The festival, to be run at various locations, aims to inspire interaction between local artists and industry, culminating in multiple art presentations and activities from November 18-27. Altona North charity workers have been retrenched as the St Vincent de Paul Society shifts jobs. An anonymous source said up to 10 paid female employees were this month retrenched from the warehouse at 99 Dohertys Road. “Needless to say, if a charity is retrenching its workers the Australian economy is up s... creek,” the source said. A St Vincent de Paul Society spokeswoman, who asked not to be named, said there were two centralised warehouses that sorted and distributed goods for 100 Vinnies shops. “The society takes considered steps to consistently improve the logistics and efficiencies within these warehouses,” she said. She said all revenue from Vinnies shops was invested in community welfare programs for people in need. “Recently, in response to changing supply and demand patterns in the greater Melbourne district, the need arose to relocate and expand part of the service from a warehouse in Altona to a warehouse in Dandenong. “This relocation included restructuring some existing positions in Altona and offering new employment opportunities for these employees in both Altona and Dandenong. Paid redundancies were also offered.” National Union of Workers industrial officer Monique Segan said she would look in to the situation. “We want to make sure workers are treated with fairness and respect,” she said. Car’s back, but battered By Goya Dmytryshchak A car belonging to a disabled Altona man has been found dumped at Hoppers Crossing. As reported exclusively by Star Weekly last week, Phillip Micallef’s Commodore SS, fitted with hand controls, was stolen from a local mechanics’ workshop overnight on September 5. Mr Micallef, who was born without legs, pushes himself on a modified scooter or uses an electric mobility scooter for short journeys, but needs a car for longer trips. He believes his car, which was 20 years old,

but in showroom condition, was targeted for parts. However, after all the publicity, the thieves dumped the car with the keys in the ignition by the side of the Princes Freeway on Saturday. “I haven’t got any access to it, it’s still with the police to get fingerprinted,” Mr Micallef said. “It’s going to be written off, they seem to think, because there’s a lot of panel damage.” Altona resident Bianka Kozole last week started a GoFundMe campaign to surprise Mr Micallef. The campaign raised nearly $1000 in the first four days, and is currently trending. Ms Kozole said she had known Mr Micallef

since she was a young girl and he always tried to help others. “Somebody like Phil doesn’t deserve something like this to happen to him,” she said. “He’s always been the kind of person that’s always cared about everyone else, and he’s always made sure that everyone else has the best of everything, and I figured it was time that he had the same in return. “Whether it be towards a new car or towards modifications on a car like his old one had … whatever he wants to use the money for, he can.” Information: Crime Stoppers 1800 333 000.

A West Footscray father is celebrating after smashing a fundraising target in his bid to help dads of premature newborns. Radford White was a little sorry to see his bushy beard hit the barbershop floor on the Father’s Day weekend, but is delighted to have helped raise more than $13,500 for the Royal Women’s Hospital in the process. The money will go towards supporting the hospital’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit Dads’ Group. After 32 weeks spent cultivating the impressive beard, Mr White said his three-year-old twins Maisie and Rupert took a moment to realise he was the same dad once it was removed. “It’s very breezy,” he said. “I feel a lot more aerodynamic as well.” Mr White said the idea for the fundraiser emerged from the experience of having his twins born more than 10 weeks premature.

Cats shot in callous act

Families lose childcare spots

By Goya Dmytryshchak One pet cat has been put down and another had its leg shattered in two separate shooting incidents at Altona North last week. Both cats were shot in Millers Road near Blackshaws Road. The first cat was euthanased after being shot twice in the abdomen with a BB gun. Veterinarian Philippa Molnar said the cat was brought in last Wednesday with a bullet still lodged inside. She urged people to be aware and report any incidents to police. The second cat, also shot twice, had its right femur blown apart but has been saved. Veterinary surgeon Nadia Wong said the cat was brought in on Thursday and surrendered by his owner. The cat has been renamed Mr BB. “He presented limping and X-rays showed that he had a right femur that’s been blown apart, bullet fragments in the right femur and also a bullet trapped in his left leg,” Ms Wong said. “There is no telling for sure that we can save his leg, but surgery was performed the next day at a Point Cook veterinary clinic where I was working. He’s in pretty bad shape, but as far as I know he’s stable and the surgery was successful. He’s using his leg. “In his case, he’s had an external fixator, or external pin, put in. But when we talk about orthopedic treatment on legs, particularly when they’ve been smashed up and there’s still bullet fragments inside that we can’t remove, it’s a matter of will the leg get better before the implant fails or will the implant fail before the leg gets better.” A Victoria Police spokesman said the perpetrator could face multiple charges on top of aggravated cruelty. Anyone with information is urged to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 300 000.

Most families hit by the planned closure of a Footscray childcare centre have missed out on places at a nearby centre. Only one in five of the 35 families impacted by the closure of Empire Street Early Learning Centre has been offered a place at the Bulldogs Community Children’s Centre next year, with the rest expected to transfer to Maribyrnong River Children’s Centre, or find another. Parents were notified of their offers the day after a meeting with Maribyrnong councillors to discuss the closure. Meanwhile, centre operator Early Childhood Management Services flatly denied claims by Maribyrnong councillor Catherine Cumming that a manager had told her children had been exposed to drug dealing and domestic disputes among neighbours. Spokeswoman Kate Jeremiah said the ECMS centre director and area manager met with Cr Cumming about the claims. “ECMS’ area manager mentioned that, from time to time, they can hear music and loud voices, but she never confirmed witnessing any drug deals or domestic disputes. ECMS categorically denies these claims.” But Cr Cumming stood by the decision to close the centre in December. Parent Sophia Agneskis said the council has failed to convince parents of the need to close the centre at such short notice, without a proper plan for the future of the site. Benjamin Millar

Seddon’s medal marvel

Apartment bid fails VCAT test

By Benjamin Millar and Scott Spits Seddon Paralympian Jessica Gallagher has realised her dream of becoming the first Australian to win a medal at both a summer and winter Games. Gallagher completed the unprecedented double by collecting bronze in the women’s vision-impaired one-kilometre cycling time trial in Rio with pilot Maddie Janssen. Gallagher won Australia’s first female Paralympic winter medal on her 24th birthday, claiming bronze in the vision-impaired ski slalom at Vancouver 2010. She then switched to para-athletics, competing in the long jump and javelin at the London 2012 Games before switching back to para-alpine skiing for a giant slalom bronze in Sochi in 2014. The versatile 30-year-old decided to give track cycling a go when long jump was dropped from Rio’s program. On Friday’s second day of competition in Rio, Gallagher and Janssen set a new Paralympic record and looked on track to collect gold before they were eclipsed by British gold medal winners Sophie Thornhill and pilot Helen Scott and then the Dutch team, which snatched silver. A beaming Gallagher posted a photo with Jannsen and their medals to her Instagram account after the success. “Still finding it hard to believe I have just become the first Australian athlete to medal at a summer and winter Paralympics or Olympics,” she said. “I am so incredibly proud to have fulfilled this dream, to have overcome the unique challenges I’ve faced in transitioning between alpine skiing, track cycling and athletics, the ups and downs along the way and the incredible people who have been a part of this journey.”

The medal comes eight years after Gallagher’s devastation at being ruled out of the Beijing games on the eve of competition. Australian doctors had declared Gallagher legally blind, but Paralympic scrutineers deemed her right eye 0.01 of a degree too sighted to legally compete. Gallagher is facing the prospect of having to choose between the 2018 winter Paralympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea, and the

Commonwealth Games on Australia’s Gold Coast. “I’ve got some big decisions to make. At the moment I’m just going to soak it all up and enjoy the fact that we’ve just become Paralympic medallists,” she said. Gallagher and Janssen have turned their focus to Sunday’s three-kilometre pursuit. “We’ve never ridden one, so it’s going to be interesting,” she said.

The state’s planning tribunal has upheld Hobsons Bay council’s refusal to grant a permit for a four-storey, 27-dwelling apartment block in Williamstown. Aitken Properties had proposed to demolish the existing single-storey building at 27 Aitken Street to construct a new building including a basement. Parking for 30 cars had been planned for ground and basement levels, with access via laneways. Objectors’ concerns included excessive height and bulk, overshadowing, overlooking, dominance over heritage buildings, inadequate carparking and unsuitable reliance on laneways for vehicle access. The Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal (VCAT) said the internal amenity provided for future residents was unacceptable, while the design was unsatisfactory for residential neighbours to the west. Among VCAT’s concerns was that some of the rooms would have no windows. However, it deemed the parking provision would have been adequate and added that vehicle access via laneways was to be encouraged. The applicant had originally applied to build a six-storey, 33-dwelling apartment block with 30 car spaces at ground level on the site. The council rejected this outright in 2014 and the applicant downsized its plans. Goya Dmytryshchak

Ice trafficker has jail time cut By Goya Dmytryshchak An ice trafficker involved in a crime syndicate headed by Fadi Haddara at Williamstown North has had his jail sentence cut on appeal. Mohammed El Achkar, 32, was sentenced on January 29 in the County Court to a maximum of two years and eight months, with a 16-month minimum. He had pleaded guilty to one charge of drug trafficking, and was found guilty by a jury of

another instance of the same offence. However, the Court of Appeal has reduced his sentence to eight months, about the amount of time already served, with a two-year community corrections order. The court ruled that El Achkar’s sentence was manifestly excessive compared with the sentences handed to his co-offenders. Haddara, named in court as the ringleader, was last year sentenced to 18 months’ jail and three years on a community corrections order.

El Achkar was caught as part of Skyborne, a Santiago taskforce operation in which police concealed listening devises and cameras at Haddara’s panel-beating shop in Orange Street, Williamstown North. Between May 2013, and March 2014, undercover police conducted 39 transactions with 13 accused, including El Achkar. Covert operatives purchased from the crime syndicate a total of 395 grams of methylamphetamine (ice), two handguns and

a sawn-off rifle, a combined value of $155,250. On January 16, 2014, El Achkar visited Haddara’s shop and sold him about two ounces (56 grams) of ice for $13,200, a charge to which he pleaded guilty. The second charge related to January 23, 2014, when El Achkar supplied Haddara with about an ounce (27.8 grams) of ice with a purity of 70 per cent. The Santiago taskforce was set up after a shooting spree in the north-west linked to rival families, including the Haddaras and Chaouks.

Think tank on why west A festival focussed on the big questions in life is coming to the west. Think West will feature more than 40 thought-provoking events on philosophy and culture, revolving around the key themes of wisdom, resilience and social change. Festival director Kaj Löfgren, who founded The School of Life in Australia, said Think West is a collaboration of key local arts, cultural, education, sport and business groups. “Everyone thought it was a fantastic concept and the right time to pursue something like this, everyone was very keen to jump on board.” The Think West festival will run for two weeks in November, featuring such speakers as comedian Meshel Laurie and human rights advocate Mariam Issa, across a range of events, panels and workshops. Mr Löfgren said while the scale is ambitious he feels the west is ready to embrace the new festival. The Newport resident said the festival is being carefully curated to reflect the area’s unique history and identity.

“I’m very conscious of this area’s history – its indigenous history, multicultural heritage and working-class roots,” he said. “Obviously, it’s undergone big and significant gentrification in the last 10 years, but these elements are a touchstone and provide the historical context.” Mr Löfgren said the festival will echo the “vehemently secular” School of Life, a contrast to the self-help movement and “happiness industry”, which he says can exploit people’s insecurities and make them feel deficient. “The School of Life is about using philosophy and the arts to achieve emotional wellbeing,” he said. “What we believe is that art and the humanities can be the rock you lean on in your time of need, can show we are not really alone in our difficult moments.” People keen to be part of Think West can propose an event via thinkwest.com.au until October 5. A ‘taster’ program is on at Highpoint from October 6-16. Benjamin Millar

JIMMY STOJKOVSKI AND ROSS HORKINGS

Friendly tone counts By Adem Saban

starweekly.com.au

Three tech-savvy Yarraville mates are bringing true tone and character to social media with the launch of their new app. Jimmy Stojkovski (originally from Point Cook), Ross Horkings (Werribee) and Matt Grisold (Eltham) are the brains behind Stem … think Twitter, but instead of 160 characters to make a statement, it’s done via a 12-second voice clip. The clips can be sent to all contacts on the app, or to individuals as private chats. “We got the idea after contacting our

mechanic,” Ross said. “His voice sounded completely different to what he looked like. “We thought, why isn’t there a social media app where you are who you are? People say they hate their voice, but it’s a massive part of who you are. There is no filtering on this … you can’t misinterpret text because there is none. “That’s what we wanted to bring back to social media: true tone and meaning.” Jimmy said the project had been two and a half years in the making, but after launching three weeks ago, the work has already paid off. The three mates have quit their day jobs to focus on the app full-time.

Five hours after launching, the app hit number 21 on Australia’s most downloaded app charts, with users based across Australia, New Zealand, America and even India. “Number 21 is great,” Ross said. “Considering the apps higher in the charts are apps like Facebook, Instagram and Snapchat.” Looking to the future, the boys are aware that there’s a long road ahead. “We’ll be taking small steps,” Jimmy said. “We’re not trying to fool ourselves, but we’re very confident.” The app can be downloaded on smartphones.

Multicultural riches A multicultural community garden, a social sewing group and a project highlighting moderate Islam have all been given a boost by a new round of state government funding. The Anglican Parish of Footscray will receive $12,000 over two years for its Footscray Multicultural Community Garden project. Father Chaplain Soma said that since being created two years ago, the garden had been bringing together local residents from a range of different backgrounds. “Things for the Chinese, people who come from Africa or Tonga or Australia,” he said. The funding was announced on Friday during a visit by Multicultural Affairs Minister Robin Scott. Mr Scott also announced a $10,000 grant to Skilling, Employment and Aid Enterprises

Australia for its Sewing the Seeds project, a weekly social sewing group for isolated African women from refugee backgrounds. The Australia Light Foundation, based in Tottenham, will receive $24,000 over two years for a project aimed at helping the community better understand moderate Islam. This project involves members of the Turkish Islamic community visiting local churches and inviting their members to participate in mosque visits and major Islamic festivals such as Iftar and Ramadan. Mr Scott said Maribyrnong was one of the state’s most culturally and religiously diverse areas, with nearly 40 per cent of residents born overseas.

MY PLACE Award-winning Yarraville percussionist, drummer and composer Will Larson tells Benjamin Millar his Melbourne Fringe Festival show has something special in store for music and film buffs alike. Complete strangers in Yarraville will say “Hi!” to you in the street just like they would in a country town. At first, I found it a bit disarming, wondering if I’d ever met these people, but it was that sense of village community that ultimately persuaded me to move here. That was 18 years ago. What do love best about living in the area? My regular haunts know and greet me by name and they generally know what I’m going to order before I do. Does living here influence or inspire your music in any way? Writer’s block is as much a problem for composers as it is for authors. If I’m stuck for an idea in my studio, I’ll head in to Yarraville village for a coffee to clear the head. What can you tell us about your duo Tess Said So? Tess Said So is Rasa Daukus (director of music at Canberra University) on piano and keyboards and myself on percussion and drums. We’re both from a modern classical background, but our music is all about blurring genres – pop, rock and jazz influences are constantly and deliberately worming their way into the music. What can we expect from your Fringe Festival performance, Nosferatu – A Symphony of Horror, at The Sun Theatre?

We’ve both composed music for film before, but we’ve never performed a score with the movie live in front of an audience, which is the way it would always have been done up until the late 1920s. Nosferatu is a favourite of ours with its wonderfully dark themes and beautiful photography, but it’s pretty dry without music. What Rasa and I do is provide the emotional content for the film, whether it be fear or happiness or anything in between. We are there to create empathy for the characters, even the vampire, because empathy is what keeps a film audience engaged. If an audience doesn’t have empathy for the film, they get bored. What else is in the pipeline for Tess Said So and your other musical adventures? We have a new album just out, Scramble + Fate, through European label Preserved Sound, and we are currently in discussions to tour both Europe and the UK. I’m also writing and recording songs for a very talented up-and-coming young singer, Aylin Eser. She has quite an amazing and unique voice. She will be releasing some new material we’ve written together before the end of the year. What is something people may be surprised to learn about you? When I was four, I was on an episode of Here’s Humphrey with Humphrey B. Bear. Nosferatu – A Symphony of Horror will be performed at the Sun Theatre from 2.30pm on Sunday, October 2. FOOD REVIEW STARWEEKLY.COM.AU

CONSIDER THE SAUCE Kenny Weir’s search for the perfect burger goes industrial … Across the new frontiers of the industrial west, there’s a cafe at least every couple of kilometres. And, these days, all but the most rigorously old-school make some efforts to provide a variety of food. Some of it is even healthy – salads and the like. Still, some habits die hard … and there are traditions to uphold. I reckon most of these hundreds of places would cop complaints if the stalwart potato cakes and deep-fried, nuggety-hard dimmies weren’t on hand. Despite all this, I am nevertheless expecting something different from Container Cafe. This place is being run, after all, by the same crew responsible for the very cool Yarraville cafe Woven, which has been turning out fine tucker for a few years now. But, on entering the place for the first time, what do I see? Yup, potato cakes and dimmies. Turns out, in this sort of joint, in this sort of place, some things are just mainstays, as they say. As I look around the “container”, I discover plenty of good signs that this is not just another tradie-style eatery. For one thing, space dictates that there is no bain marie here – so most everything is prepared fresh. In a heated display cabinet on the counter, there are Ka Pies! And alongside the regulation-issue HP Sauce is a range of hot saucy offerings.

CONTAINER CAFE Address: 4/2 Roussos Place, Truganina Phone: 0466 148 762 Finally, there is the Container Cafe menu – plenty of carb’n’grease, should they be desired – and plenty else besides. My southern fried chicken burger ($11.50) is a killer – maybe even the best chook burger I’ve eaten. The thigh meat is crisp on the outer, and oh-so-very juicy and delicious on the inside. My outstanding burger comes with terrific rough-cut slaw, very good melted cheese and pickles. The Cuban sandwich is another outright winner – superb value for $10, and getting extra points straightaway for being made with the appropriate, Cuban-style bread. The innards are a wonderfully gooey mix of melted gruyere, pickles, pulled pork and ham. From what I’ve seen on two visits, Container Cafe is already a hit with workers passing through. In finer weather, I fully expect to see this place attract a wider crowd from a broader area. Container Cafe is open 5am-3pm Monday-Friday, though that could change, depending on weather and demand. The style of Seddon’s Basset Lobaza Architects is on show at this circa-1900 abode, with the innovative merging of heritage and today as a hallmark of their designs. What’s been retained here are a classic entry arch, and skirts, cornices and sash windows in three bedrooms, one of which is a dead-set charmer with its painted original board walls and gently pitched ceiling. The rest is sophisticated, classy and contemporary. One of the living spaces that links with a deck and living hub could serve as a fourth bedroom. Both fully tiled bathrooms are sharp and sleek, the en suite’s bluestone floor tiles tres panache. The large living room has northerly light bouncing off white walls and spotted gum floorboards, and the kitchen has Bosch appliances, stone benchtops, walk-in pantry and soft-close joinery. Glass doors slide right back to a deck and large, lawned backyard.

Pretty Victorian on the outside, this one also boasts a superb contemporary makeover on the inside. Warm neutral wall paint and white plantation shutters juxtapose with light-toned floorboards and grey carpets in bedrooms (each with wardrobe and split-system). Both fully tiled bathrooms are shmick, with floating vanity units and one with an oval tub. The living domain and kitchen are top-notch and open via large glass sliders to a private deck under an open pergola. All-white and glossy, the kitchen has a stone waterfall island bench and elite appliances by Ilve and Siemens. The corner property has pedestrian right-of-way to Stewart Street and is within a four-minute walk of Williamstown Beach train station and just a fraction more to the Esplanade and waterfront.

FOOTSCRAY 8/33 Gordon Street, 3011

Jas Stephens: 9316 9000 Price: $700,000 – $750,000 Auction: September 24 at noon

Burnham: 9687 1344

On a corner block in up-and-coming Kingsville, neighbouring other increasingly popular suburbs, this block-fronted Edwardian is loaded with heritage appeal alongside modern comforts. The largest of three bedrooms has an original cast-iron fireplace and surround, and stained-glass upper window panes – along with high ceilings and original skirts, architraves and cornices found elsewhere as well. The bright bathroom shares laundry facilities. The lounge room has a cast-iron fireplace and french doors to a brick-paved, north-facing courtyard – the latter also accessed from a rear bedroom. The next-door dining room has a gas fire with period surround and links with a galley kitchen featuring the mod-cons and lots of cupboards and bench space. Off-street parking is a welcome inclusion, as are a garden shed and leafy backyard.

Within a 15-minute drive of Melbourne CBD or less than 30 by train, this old-school unit would make a fab commuter bolt hole – a lick of paint and elbow grease would make it immediately liveable, but it has much potential for a more focused renovation. It’s ideal for owner-occupier or investor, who may want to capitalise on the rapidly soaring popularity of Footscray. Being within 200 metres of bus, tram services and supermarket, and having Highpoint shopping centre a three-minute car trip away, earn big ticks for location. The unit has one good-sized carpeted bedroom with built-in wardrobe, and the bathroom retains its original pink pedestal basin. Entry is directly into a living room with ceiling fan and heating, while the kitchen has a surprising amount of storage, an electric cooker and space for a dining table. A further drawcard is a secure garage and off-street parking.

Property of the week

NEWPORT 55 Elphin Street, 3015 Raine & Horne Williamstown: 9397 6167 Poet Robert Browning wrote “Grow old along with me! The best is yet to be”, and so it is with this charming Edwardian brick and timber house. Renovated to an exceptionally high standard, its gorgeous heritage style is evident from the facade whose pretty fretwork and lovely leadlight-paned front door herald more to come. The owners of Rose Cottage have put a lot of time and thought into the changes required to make this their dream house – the needs of a blended family and kids with a wide spread of ages had to be considered. “We tried to make it modern but keep

3

Price: Contact agent Auction: September 24 at 11am our favorite period features such as the ornamental cornices and roses on 3.7-metre ceilings, fireplaces, timber floors and architraves. So we matched new leadlighting with old and painted the walls the same colour,” the vendor said. The bathroom and kitchen were renovated in 2011 and the house has been rewired, repainted and nternet-enabled. “We reblocked the rear section and excavated the soil to increase sub-floor ventilation,” the vendor added. “We replaced old sewer pipes and installed a new in-ground water line, hot water system and European-style laundry. And we

repaired the roof and built a back shed.” Inside, the three bedrooms run off a wide central hall. The main, at the front, has a fireplace with decorative tiled surrounds, and all rooms have built-in wardrobes and share a capacious, all-white bathroom. A rear extension achieves a sympathetic period tone along with the benefit of modern convenience. Beneath the downlights, crisp white cabinetry, ample bench space, green tiled splashback, gas cooktop and an underbench oven give the kitchen a contemporary tone. The living hub provides spectacular garden views through timber-framed bifolds.

A covered deck is large enough for outdoor furniture, and there are steps down to the lawn. On the block of about 330 square metres, there’s potential to extend up and out or simply include a vegie patch. “As a family we’ve jogged and cycled down Elphin Street, through the parks and along the Strand before work,” one of the current occupants says. “Grabbing a take-away coffee at one of the cafés on our way back has been a big part of our ritual.” Eleanor Tabone

Apsley cotton dog coat $99.95, from Driza-Bone.

Winter is here and all of us, even our four-legged friends, are feeling the drop in temperatures. It’s important to be aware of this, particularly for certain breeds of dogs and cats and those that are elderly or arthritic, says Nadine Dixon from Geelong Animal Welfare Society. Age and health definitely play a part in increasing the chill factor. “If I had an elderly dog, I would make sure that its bed was an elevated bed,” she says. “If an outside dog, it needs somewhere elevated … off the concrete. “If the dog is old or a little bit arthritic, it’s good to have a jacket on them to keep that warmth in.” Nadine says arthritic and elderly dogs should have regular vet checks. Very cold weather can exacerbate a medical condition. Options such as stretcher beds are good for outside dogs, she says. Some breeds will feel the cold more than others. “The short-coated dogs are very perceptive of cold weather [as are small] dogs like the little Maltese-crosses and shih tzu crosses,” Nadine says. Owners should put coats or jackets on these dogs to help keep them at a “constant, comfortable” body temperature, especially if the dog has had its coat trimmed. “It’s important for them to have a coat after they get their hair cut,” Nadine says. A jacket is an easy solution, especially in winter. Whether a dog has an elevated, warm bed on the verandah or an indoor bed is a personal decision for owners. “It really depends on what people see their dog as,” Nadine says.

“Dogs are companions. They love to be in the household, they love to be a part of the family. And so do cats. Generally, there’s nothing greater for them than to be stretched out in front of a fireplace with their blanket or their jacket on … it’s them being a part of the family in the house.” There’s an extensive range of dog jackets, coats, blankets and fashion accessories available. They range from on-trend tartan to denim jackets, even Driza-Bones. “Some [dogs] have two jackets,” Nadine says. “They have an outside jacket that’s semi or fully waterproof, and they have something knitted or fleecy for indoors.” Cats, meanwhile, will usually shun anything wearable. They’re happier with the coat they were born with. Melissa Hancock, from Petbarn Waurn Ponds, says cats will usually grow a winter coat, or an undercoat, at this time of year. Certain breeds, however, such as the Cornish rex and sphynx, do not and will feel the cold. Nadine suggests cat igloos (“where they can also feel more safe and secure”) as a wintry retreat. She’s found they work well although, she says, some cats will still “squeeze you out of the bed to get under the Doona”.

SPORT Phoenix sees off relegation threat that we had against Altona Magic … it paid off for us.” Altona East could only be relegated if it lost by three goals or more. In that event, the Phoenix would have been leap-frogged by Cairnlea, which also finished inside the relegation zone. Even with that equation in mind, the Phoenix players had no intention of playing negative football. “If you just try and park the bus, you can get yourself in trouble because they’re attacking and eventually they’ll break through,” Dimitriou said. “The coach [Paul Falzon] just said for them to go out there and play their normal game like we did against Altona Magic … if we score it puts them under even more pressure.”

After a scoreless first half, Altona East found a goal through Liam Francis. It broke Cairnlea’s spirit. Francis scored a second and gave the Phoenix a chance to celebrate safety after a difficult campaign spent in the lower reaches of the ladder. In other games, champion side Altona Magic had a 0-0 draw with North Sunshine Eagles to finish the season six points clear at the top, while Yarraville Glory had a 2-1 home defeat to Sydenham Park. In state league 2, Altona City claimed the inaugural beyondblue Cup, ripping Fitzroy City apart 6-0. Lance Jenkinson

Slow but sure for Swifts By Lance Jenkinson It took until a month into the season for Maribyrnong Swifts to realise they were building something special. The Swifts admit that early on they had a bit of an inferiority complex borne of a rough previous season and a lack of ambition compared to the more established clubs. When the Swifts eventually realised their potential, there was no stopping them en route to the FFV women’s state league 3 west title. “We didn’t realise we were that strong until the fourth or fifth game,” Swifts coach Davide Gualtieri told Star Weekly. “We’re not the kind of club that believed the team will win the league because we’re really young – like four or five years old – and we’ve struggled for the past two years.” Maribyrnong sealed the title with a comprehensive 7-0 win over local rivals Yarraville Glory on home soil at Johnson Reserve in the final round. The Swifts were unbeaten over the season, winning 13 and drawing three of their 16 games. Gualtieri’s team was stingy defensively, conceding just nine goals for the campaign. The Swifts had up to nine players rotate through the defence, with Delia Dargham, Phoebe Mack, Natalie Harrison and Katharina Gerste as the mainstays. But the Swifts also scored truckloads of goals, 54 in all, without possessing a dominant striker. They scored goals by committee with Belinda Huynh leading the way with 11, closely followed by Amy Johnson and Matilda Myers (nine each) and Anja Boyens (eight). Gualtieri was proud of the style of football played by the Swifts and some of the spectacular team build-ups to goal. “We had to build the beautiful goal to be able to score,” he said. “We couldn’t rely on one strong player, passing the ball to them and something happening. “We had to build up play and work hard to score, so a lot of tactics was involved, which is part of my background because obviously in Italy we do a lot of tactics. “The girls got into the tactics quite easily and the connectivity of the team was the most important.” Maribyrnong is about to prepare for life in the much tougher state league 2. It’s a daunting prospect for the Swifts, but so was this season before they realised what they were capable of producing. “I can’t tell you how proud we are,” Gualtieri said. “It was the first time we’ve been promoted ever, the first time we won the league and the first time we’ve been through undefeated.

■ Deer Park Football Club has written itself into WRFL history by winning its fourth division-one premiership in a row in emphatic fashion last Sunday at the Whitten Oval. The blue-and-gold machine was unstoppable and in the end there was nothing the opposition could do to halt the landslide. The reigning premiers put a week of controversy behind them to concentrate on winning football. Even the last-minute loss of gun on-baller Jack Purton-Smith failed to shake their resolve. They were methodical, organised, disciplined and just too talented on the day. You have to admire the way they play footy and the results speak for themselves. Marc Bullen and Luke Summers are retiring from senior football. Bullen has brought four premiership cups to John McLeod Oval as senior coach and Luke Summers is a five-time premiership player and the heart and soul of the club. They leave a great legacy. ■ The off-field controversy at Deer Park was the talk of the footy world last week. Like most people in footy in the west, I have heard of the message. I do find it fascinating that someone who was upset at not being told some bad news to his face would respond by posting a message on a closed Facebook page. Why not contact the person you had the beef with and express your point of view? Or arrange a face-to-face meeting? Then it remains a private matter. The only reason is attention seeking. It is also the way to shape the situation with just one point of view. This has become standard use of social media. I think it is weak. ■ On as brighter note, what about those Bulldogs? The win against the Eagles was one for the ages and had long-time Doggies fans searching their memories for victories that rank with the victory in Perth. The 1984 game against Collingwood, featuring Gubby Allen and Simon Beasley, is up there. As is the 2000 Terry Wallace/Chris Grant-inspired victory over Essendon. One of my favourites is the win over Geelong at Kardinia Park in 2001. ■ I am happy to report I will be back on 1116 SEN from this Saturday with the spring races starting to heat up. I am looking forward to once again bringing you the big sports events over summer.

There was no need to fret on the final day of the season for relegation-threatened Altona East Phoenix. The Phoenix comfortably took care of business in a 2-0 win over Cairnlea at Paisley Park on Saturday to secure a continuation of FFV state league 1 status for next season. Phoenix president Jim Dimitriou said it was an impressive outing. “Even though they knew they didn’t have to win the game – a draw was enough to be safe – they went out with the mentality that they were going to win,” he said. “We pushed Altona Magic the week before … clearly the best side in the league. “We weren’t scared to play our normal attacking soccer and had the same game plan

Fearons reclaim form to bring home the shield Williamstown won back-to-back premierships in Lacrosse Victoria men’s state league on Saturday. The Fearons came from no-man’s land in the finals to swoop on their 32nd title. You should never write off a championship team, but some were inclined to do just that after the Fearons were hammered by Surrey Park on the eve of finals, tumbled to third on the ladder, and lost their double chance in the process. But the Fearons were standouts in the finals – winning three cut-throat games in comprehensive fashion. They topped off a magical September with a 12-7 win over western rivals Footscray in the grand final at Treyvaud Memorial Reserve on Saturday. Fearons’ coach Damien Orr was proud of his team’s ability to meet every challenge thrown up during the successful premiership defence. “It’s difficult to repeat,” he told Star Weekly. “We had to come from third in the finals,

and had a tough season with injuries. We got it right towards the end of the season.” Williamstown was able to enjoy the grand final for the most part. Footscray, the minor premiers after a stellar second half of the season, barely fired a shot after the first quarter. After a tight opening, the Fearons sprung to life with four second quarter goals, and were able to grow their three-goal half-time lead in the second half. “We wanted to limit them early and not let them get away,” Orr said. “We then applied ourselves through the middle part of the game, stretched it out to a seven-goal lead at one stage, and then managed the game from there.” Williamstown’s US import Paul Werner took out the grand final MVP award. Werner scored twice in the opening period to finish with three goals and an assist. The Geddysburg College product was one of

two American imports to play for the Fearons this season, along with Daniel Murray. “It was the first year we’ve had US players on our team,” Orr said. “It’s good to bring them in and have more college players into the environment because it gave us the structure –

it allows us to execute better because there was more of a solid understanding of the strategies we were employing.” Ben Newman took out Williamstown’s MVP for the season. He was unlucky to be pipped for the grand final MVP, finishing with three goals and an assist. “He was the most integral person throughout the year,” Orr said. “He had a fantastic season and was really deserving to be voted the MVP. “He took on a massive amount of the scoring burden and played really solid midfield play.” Meanwhile, Newport took out its 25th Lacrosse Victoria women’s state league title. The Porters held on for a 9-7 win over a fast-finishing Footscray in the season decider at Greenwich Reserve on Sunday, their ninth premiership in 11 years and third three-peat since 2006. They were guided to the title by player-coach Stacey Morlang. Lance Jenkinson

Seagulls nail preliminary final berth

Gibbons not done yet By Lance Jenkinson Williamstown onballer Michael Gibbons has won the 2016 JJ Liston Trophy for best-and-fairest in the VFL. Gibbons becomes only the sixth Seagulls player in history to claim the VFL’s top honour. He is the first since ruckman Paul Dooley, who claimed the award in 1996. Gibbons won Monday night’s vote count at Crown with 17 votes, ahead of Geelong’s George Horlin-Smith (15), teammate Ben Jolley and Port Melbourne’s Toby Pinwill (both 14). For Gibbons, this season was about making the most of his opportunities after extra minutes opened up in the midfield with Adam Marcon being drafted to Richmond. After a best-on-ground performance in last year’s grand final win over Box Hill Hawks, Gibbons has taken his game up to another level. He said Seagulls coach Andy Collins had talked with him about how he would be given more of an opportunity in the midfield. “[He] put it on me that if I didn’t get fit enough and if I didn’t take my opportunity, then he wasn’t going to play me,” Gibbons said.

Gibbons, originally from Coolamon in country NSW, responded in the best possible way to produce his most complete season. The 21-year-old is equally as damaging on the inside of packs as he is with run and carry. The Murray Bushrangers product is comfortable on either side of the body. Gibbons credits Collins for holding him to high standards. In the middle of last season, Gibbons was surprisingly banished to the development league team, needing to work on some aspects of his game. Two months later, he was a senior premiership player and a Norm Goss Medal-winner as the star of the grand final. “There were some things I needed to go back and work on, mainly defensive stuff,” Gibbons said. “Collo’s pretty firm with me – as much as he puts trust in me, he still puts me back in my place when I need to be. That’s why I respect him so much.” It was Collins and Seagulls football manager Chris Dixon who sold Gibbons on the idea of joining Williamstown.

Gibbons had been overlooked at the AFL draft, but was not about to give up on his football dream. “When I was 18, I put all my eggs into one basket and that was getting drafted,” Gibbons said. “When it didn’t happen, mum and dad wanted to get rid of me, so they sent me down to Melbourne and it’s worked out pretty well. “I couldn’t have picked a better club with Williamstown – all the boys are unbelievable and I’ve made friends for life. It’s a great place to be around each week.” It would be surprising if Gibbons did not realise his dream of being drafted to the AFL later this year. He has the skill set, drive and courage needed to make the step up to the big league. But first, Gibbons has a key role to play in Williamstown’s midfield in Sunday’s VFL preliminary final against Casey Scorpions at North Port Oval. “The boys are super keen to give it a red hot crack,” Gibbons said. “We don’t want the season to end this week.”

Williamstown has regained its footing in the VFL premiership race after an impressive 46-point win over Sandringham in a cut-throat VFL semi-final at North Port Oval on Saturday. The Seagulls, defending champions, were dismal a week prior so were out to prove their qualifying final loss to Collingwood was a mere aberration. It was a game featuring two desperate sides that could hardly be separated. They traded goals to be near level-pegging 10 minutes into the second quarter. The game changed complexion after a lengthy stoppage as medical staff attended to Sandringham’s Jack Noone. Noone landed awkwardly in a contest on the outer wing and sustained a broken leg. It was a distressing scene for both sets of players, but it had more of an impact on Noone’s Zebras teammates. The Seagulls banged on the next four goals to take a 26-point lead into half-time. With one man down, Sandringham mounted a gallant comeback after half-time, getting to within 17 points at three-quarter time. But the Seagulls scooted away in the last, kicking six of the final seven goals. Williamstown barely had a weak link. At the coal face, it was Michael Gibbons, Willie Wheeler and Ben Jolley who carved up the Zebras’ midfield. In the first half, Sam Dunell was the standout forward for the Seagulls, finishing with three goals for the game, while Ayce Cordy took over to be the commanding presence in the second half and kicked three goals of his own. Williamstown will face Casey Scorpions at North Port Oval on Sunday, the winner advancing to the grand final. Footscray has made a habit of drama-filled last-quarter wins this season, and its 19-point victory over Essendon was no exception. The Bulldogs came back from 18 points down at three-quarter time to win on the back of a six-goal-to-one final term at North Port Oval on Sunday. Jordan Russell was best-on-ground for the Dogs with 25 touches and 10 marks. Footscray will meet Collingwood in the preliminary final at North Port Oval on Saturday. Lance Jenkinson

Deer Park dominates … again By Lance Jenkinson Deer Park has produced the most dominant era of any side in WRFL division 1 history. The Lions are kings of the jungle for a record-breaking fourth consecutive year after securing that elusive four-peat with a 114-point mauling of Hoppers Crossing in the grand final at Whitten Oval on Sunday. In a break from tradition, Lions’ player-coach Marc Bullen and captain Chris Stewart received the premiership cup high on the balcony at the home of Western Bulldogs, not on a premiership dais at ground level. It was a fitting stage for the ceremony because the Lions were head and shoulders above any side in this year’s competition – and, arguably, the best ever. “Any standstill moments like that, you know you want to cherish it for the rest of your life,” Bullen said. Deer Park could smell blood from time-on in the first quarter. The competitive opening 12 minutes, with both sides kicking three goals apiece, was quickly forgotten as the Lions piled on seven of the next eight goals to take a 39-point lead into quarter-time. The engravers might as well have gotten to work at that point because there was no coming

back for Hoppers Crossing, who could only manage to stem the blood loss until half-time. When the Warriors emerged from the main break, they were on the receiving end of a Deer Park side at its most lethal. It was a procession of goals for the Lions in the second half, 12 goals to one to ensure they would break their own record for highest score kicked in a top-flight grand final. The 25.21 (171) result eclipsed their own 2014

grand final score of 22.26 (158). As much as the talk inevitably surrounds Deer Park’s attacking force, Bullen has consistently preached the virtues of defence to his players. The Lions weren’t as miserly as in last season’s decider when they held Werribee Districts to just two goals. They held onto their weekly target of keeping opponents to fewer than 10 goals, with Hoppers Crossing registering 8.9 (57). “I’ve been big on team first, big on defensive mindset, and the result will take care of itself, if we do the team first things,” Bullen said. “We try and restrict opposition sides to 10 goals or less during a game. Our cornerstone is our half-back line and our defence. “You get good ball-users behind the ball, and you can set up whatever you want from there.” Rodney Van Riet collected the Herb Pascarl Medal for best-on-ground. Van Riet was as important to the structure of the team as he was influential, with his possession-winning skills in the centre of the ground. The heartbreaking loss of Jack Purton-Smith, who pulled out of the grand final minutes before the first bounce with a hamstring injury meant Van Riet had to step up, and he did so with aplomb. “I don’t like to call myself a good judge, but I

am, if you read the Record. I said he’s probably the only one that can take that medal off Kwame [McHarg],” Bullen said. “He probably had about 35 to 40 touches in the middle of the ground. He went in and absolutely killed them.” McHarg was pipped for the Pascarl Medal, and only has himself to blame. The electric forward was unstoppable with five goals, but could easily have doubled that if not for his wayward shooting. Brendan Fevola kicked four, Jase Perkins came with a late run to match that tally, and Spiros Amarantidis’ forward defensive pressure was rewarded with three goals. It would have been an easy day to be a Deer Park forward, with the silver service coming via a midfield brigade led by Van Riet, Luke Summers, Sohrob Ismail, Shannon Byrnes and Rhett King. Chains of play were so often set up by half-backs Max Bruin and Kane McKenzie. Bullen praised his players, not only for their performance on the big stage, but for the hours of hard work they put in aside from the three hours every weekend. “We’ve been working each other that bloody hard to get where we want,” he said. “We push our players to the limits, and they’re rewarded in due course.” Main: Deer Park player-coach Marc Bullen and captain Chris Stewart hold the premiership cup aloft from the balcony. SPORT

Summers hangs up boots on ‘long and worthy’ career Deer Park veteran Luke Summers has bowed out of senior WRFL football on his own terms. Summers was one of the Lions standouts in Sunday’s 114-point grand final win over Hoppers Crossing at the Whitten Oval, racking up possessions at will across the midfield, and delivering winners to the forwards on a platter. After seven premierships, Summers has decided that it is time to re-pay his family for the sacrifices they have made during his stellar career. “I’m 36 in November, so that’s enough for me,” he told Star Weekly. “I’ve got to spend a bit of time with the family. “I love footy, I love the Deer Park footy club. “My wife tells me it’s my life; it comes first and foremost she tells me, and she’s probably right to a certain degree. “Obviously family comes first, but football is very high up there.

“I’ve done it since I was eight years old and it’s going to be hard to leave. It’s definitely a treasure this premiership … I’ll take this to my grave.” Summers will not be totally lost to football. Whatever is left in his tank will be spent as a reserves player next season. “I’ll play with a few mates that I played [with] back in division 2 days who are still going around,” Summers said. Summers has a grand final record most could only dream about. He is a perfect 7-0 when it comes to the biggest day on the calendar, having won two flags with Melton, two more with Deer Park in division 2 and three with Deer Park in division 1. His only blemish was getting suspended before the 2013 grand final, which cost him a place in the side which kick-started this golden era for Deer Park.

“I was reported the first one, which I regret,” he said. But Summers has made up for it since, collecting a personal three-peat. And, despite Sunday’s lop-sided scoreline, he felt relieved and emotional when the full-time siren blew on his decorated career. “The final siren was a bit emotional, but it’s just an unbelievable feeling,” Summers said. “Premierships aren’t easy; it’s hard, it’s physical and from minute one to 120, you’re going … the people inside the four walls, we’re all mates and we dig deep together. “That’s why we’re successful.” Summers is proud to have been part of a club that was “on its knees” then turned into a powerhouse. “It’s been a long and worthy journey,” he said. Fevola finds magic form By Lance Jenkinson Not even a broken sternum was going to stop Brendan Fevola from taking to the field on Sunday. Fevola kicked four goals in Deer Park’s record-setting WRFL division 1 four-peat premiership win over Hoppers Crossing at the Whitten Oval. And yet he was lauded by player-coach Marc Bullen for his defensive pressure and physicality around the contest, which was even more courageous once his condition was revealed in the post-game. “I had a scan yesterday and it’s still broken,” Fevola said of the sternum injury, sustained against Altona in July. “It’s actually really sore, but adrenalin got me through. Sometimes when you put your arm up, it doesn’t go up as high as it should.” Fevola was thrilled to be able to “hang on the coat-tails” of Deer Park during its premiership run. The 35-year-old former AFL star linked up with the Lions to play alongside long-time mate Ryan Houlihan. “The main reason I came over was to play with Hoops [Ryan Houlihan], and I got to play in a grand final with him,” Fevola said.

“He was a groomsman at my wedding.” Fevola was thrilled that it happened at Deer Park. He felt right at home in the Lions’ den from the moment he set foot into the club. “It’s just a ripping footy club – a real family club,” he said. “It’s special, especially coming from where they’ve come from – Goldy [president Mark McGoldrick] got the club from division 2, when they were a laughing stock, to four [flags] in a row [in division 1], which has never happened. It’s good to be a part of it.” The big question over Fevola’s arrival at Deer Park centred on his impact on the forwards around him. It was already a potent attacking force, which had registered more than 150 points in the previous two grand finals, so it was a danger to mess with that chemistry. “Early on, we struggled a bit, and we didn’t have much synergy,” he said. “Once we all got it together, we did really work well together.” After initial teething pains, Fevola proved a welcome addition to the forward line structure, and the club as a whole. He managed 50 goals in 11 games, but also offered leadership to other players and put the club on the map with his media commitments outside. Even though he has only spent one season with Deer Park, Fevola has built up an affinity

with other players. He could feel the pain of teammate Jack Purton-Smith, who pulled out of the grand final with a hamstring injury in the warm-up. “I grabbed a medal off the bloke and put it around his neck, so he’s got a medal as well,” Fevola said. “It’s great for [Purton-Smith’s replacement] Jayke [Ewer], I don’t think there’s been too many blokes who have lost one in one day and played one the same day.” It was Fevola’s third premiership, but he still had butterflies in his stomach pre-game. “They’re all pretty special, whether you’re playing for Nar Nar Goon seconds, Deer Park or in the AFL,” he said. “I was that nervous this morning; my wife said: ‘What are you shaking for? You’re 35, you’ve done all this before’. “But it doesn’t matter, it’s irrelevant. I spoke to Byrnesy [Shannon Byrnes] – he was nervous, everyone was nervous. “We’re just glad we got out there and played some good footy.” As for Fevola’s playing future, he will decide in the summer whether to go on. Meantime, he will just lap up the premiership celebrations. “I don’t know, I’m getting old,” he said. “I’ll have a think about it over the summer. “It would be a good way to bow out.”

It is the team within a team that is integral to Deer Park’s success in the WRFL’s division 1. The Lions’ defence does not get the same plaudits as its much-publicised forward line, but without it a four-peat of flags would not have been possible. Teams that can keep their opponents to 10 goals or fewer are going to win more often than not. Over the course of the season, the Lions’ backline has been the most miserly in the competition, conceding an average 56.5 points a game. In Sunday’s grand final, it held Hoppers Crossing to 57 points, which is akin to a chess player calling “checkmate”. “We’re a very tight-knit group,” Lions full-back Jackson Barling told Star Weekly Weekly. “We always set ourselves goals within the team for the back six. “We’ve just got that trust. We all know what we’re going to do for each other and that’s why we play so well as a backline.” Barling is the lynchpin of the Deer Park defence. The seasoned campaigner is regarded as one of the best key defenders in the league. A bull-at-a-gate operator, he only knows one way and that is to run in straight lines through the opposition. Barling’s presence bearing down on them made for uncertain moments for the younger Hoppers Crossing players. “We knew if we could pressure them physically – they’re a younger side and we could out-muscle them – they wouldn’t last the whole game,” he said. “That was a big focus, especially [with] some of their key players – just get stuck into them early – and it paid off for us. “Our pressure around the ground was phenomenal. “It wasn’t just the back six, it was everywhere – tackles in the middle, tackles all around the ground.” Deer Park’s defence is successful because all the parts fit. The Lions are not only top-shelf in the one-on-ones, led by team-of-the year full-back Tim Quick, but they also offer plenty of drive through the speed and skill of Kane McKenzie, another team-of-the year member, and Max Bruin. “We’ve got some good ball users and we’ve got some blokes who stay at home and defend,” Barling said. “We all work well together.” Lance Jenkinson
