Fruits of labour loved At the age of 90, Williamstown fruiterer Tony Napoli has earned some rest. These days, he sleeps in a bit – until about 3.30am – before going to work at the Ferguson Street fruit and vegetable shop that bears his name. He still works seven days a week at the business he started in 1968, 17 years after arriving from Calabria in Italy. “I came in ’51 and for one year I worked here in a factory, Thompsons Foundry,” Mr Napoli said. “Because I was born in the country, I opened here.” There are now four generations of the well-known Napoli family in Williamstown – Mr Napoli welcomed his seventh great grandchild into the world this month. Three of his four sons work in the shop and Mr Napoli comes in each morning to help. “You gotta be occupied in something,” he said. “I help the kids, I have few coffees, a little bit of talking. “It’s a very friendly people up here.” His son Frank, who gets up at 2am to buy fresh produce from the market, said his father enjoyed coming in to help set up. “He got a bit upset when we got the forklift because he thought he wouldn’t be needed,” Frank said. Twin towers top Forges By Benjamin Millar The heart of Footscray could be transformed by a plan for twin towers soaring up to 19 storeys above the old Forges department store site. A proposal by the Banco Group for 14 Albert Street includes 235 apartments in two towers rising above a six-storey streetfront building comprising a 120-room nursing home, a medical centre, six-screen cinema, restaurant, supermarket, café and specialty shops. The development would be the tallest in central Footscray, and housing would include 146 one-bedroom and 89 two-bedroom units. An urban context report by G2 Urban Planning, submitted almost a year after the council requested further information about the proposal, has been altered to increase the

number of ‘night-time activities’ planned in the development. The report notes Banco’s recent completion of the Footscray Plaza redevelopment, directly south of Forges, has “heralded significant change in this part of Footscray’s retail core”. “The proposed development will further diversify and solidify the retail offering at the core of the activity centre, and meet both housing and employment objectives for the Footscray major activity centre.” The Forges department store has stood vacant since November 2008 and the site is currently used as an open carpark “ripe for redevelopment”. The report concedes the proposal is higher than the council’s preferred 10-storey cap. But it suggests the project will “strike a suitable

balance between the site’s capacity to be developed and the preferred heights set out in the planning scheme”. The report notes most of the proposed apartments are tailored at the affordable spectrum of the market, “nevertheless their amenity will be high”. It is also proposed that the southern part of Albert Street, north of Paisley Street, be redeveloped as a shared pedestrian-vehicle zone. The urban context report suggests the development will stimulate the local economy by concentrating residential growth around central Footscray and its retail heart. “The proposed design provides a lasting landmark for the Footscray major activity centre, and should be supported.” Artist impression of the proposal from the corner The plan will go to council in coming months. of Albert and Paisley Streets. As we move further into winter, things are heating up in Maribyrnong with so much happening in and around our community including new businesses, events and more. And the best way to discover where to eat, shop and play is through our new I Heart Maribyrnong app, which I was proud to launch on 22 July at Lot 10 Eatery in West Footscray, along with my fellow councillors. Available for both Apple and Android devices, this free app is the first of its kind for a Melbourne metropolitan suburban council and lets users easily discover and explore the highlights of this fascinating pocket of Melbourne, just five kilometres from the CBD. Users can easily make their way through the city with interactive maps, discovering cheap and tasty food, exciting bars and cafes, eclectic shops, beautiful parks, gardens and sporting grounds along the way. The app is also a great new way for local business to promote themselves. They just have to make sure that they are on Google business which is free. They can also upload photos to help attract new customers. Our city offers a world of possibilities. Download the app today and find all that Maribyrnong has to offer for yourself! And speaking of online, Council recently turned on free WiFi in Footscray City Centre. Accessible 24/7 in Nicholson Street Mall, between Irving and Hopkins Streets, this service will make a significant contribution to the evolution of Footscray as a University Town and as a smart, innovative hub for learning, business tourism and the wider community. Following analysis of the initial take-up, Council hopes to extend the WiFi service to other areas across the city in the future. A reminder that applications for our 2016-17 Community Grants are due by Monday 15 August. Our annual Community Grants Program supports local projects or initiatives that benefit our community and grants are available in three categories:

Defence clean-up finally on books By Benjamin Millar The massive clean-up of the Maribyrnong defence site could finally begin, almost two decades after Defence decided to offload it. The federal government placed a listing on its Austender website on Friday seeking expressions of interest in remediating the 127-hectare site over the next three to five years. Negotiations to sell the site to state government developer Places Victoria, started in 2009, are due to be finalised this year. Defence has indicated it is committed to

remediating the site regardless of the outcome of the negotiations, and despite assessments showing it could cost up to $300 million. The former horse-racing stud was acquired by the Commonwealth between 1908 and 1917, and developed into a major explosives and armaments manufacturing centre. The site, which includes more than 500 buildings, was identified as surplus to Defence requirements in 1997 and slated for disposal. The tender document notes the site is significantly contaminated and will require substantial cleaning up “to ensure the protection

of human health and the environment”. Assessments of more than 7000 soil samples since 2001 have uncovered more than 600 chemicals per sample, in some instances. Of almost 1000 groundwater samples taken, extensive contamination was found to have occurred as a result of past activities and management practices. The tender document notes the clean-up will be one of the largest and most complex ever undertaken in Australia due to the site’s size, its sensitive location next to the Maribyrnong River, its heritage significance and the built

infrastructure that remains there, as well as “other complexities … associated with the broad range of contamination risks relating to explosives, chemicals and other hazardous material”. “The long and sometimes incomplete site history has resulted in uncertainty as to the activities conducted in some areas,” it notes. Maribyrnong mayor Cameron McDonald said while remediation is important, future uses of the site must be carefully assessed, not just “fitting in as many houses as they can”. Tenders close September 20.

Eyes-only caper in Clinton cover-up Street artist Lushsux has reacted to the furore over his West Footscray mural of US presidential nominee Hillary Clinton in a skimpy swimsuit by painting over the image in the form of a Muslim niqab. The murals have been painted with permission on the side of Sunshine Road business Mr Mobility, which sells wheelchairs and scooters. Maribyrnong council had written to the property owner warning they had 10 days to remove the Clinton image or risk fines and prosecution. Chief executive Stephen Wall said a number of complaints had been made about the mural. “We believe that this mural is ‘offensive’ because of the depiction of a near naked woman, not on the basis of disrespect to Hillary

Clinton, and it is not in keeping with our stance on gender equity,” he said. On Tuesday, Mr Wall said the updated mural was no longer considered offensive and no further action would be taken against the property owner. Mr Mobility’s owner is currently overseas, but a friend who is minding the business said the council had over-reacted about the original mural. “Someone from the council came in and said it has to go and I wasn’t very happy,” she said. “You see much worse in advertising around the place. I’m a woman and I’m not offended by it – it’s just getting to be ridiculous.” Lushsux, whose Instagram account was temporarily removed after he posted a photo of his Clinton mural, has since painted a revealing nude mural of Ms Clinton’s presidential rival,

Donald Trump, in a CBD laneway. The mural originally featured Mr Trump’s genitals, which have now been replaced with Ms Clinton’s face. Lushsux then repainted the Clinton mural on Monday, covering her with a niqab. The artist said the wall now contained a depiction of “a beautiful Muslim woman”. “No reasonable individual would consider this offensive,” he said. “If you do consider it offensive you are a sexist, racist, Islamophobic, xenophobic, uncultured and ignorant bigot.” Women’s Health West chief executive Dr Robyn Gregory said the Clinton mural struck her as disrespectful and reminiscent of the kind of sexism faced by Julia Gillard as Prime Minister, but that she was “not one for censorship”. Benjamin Millar

A veteran has lost his battle for special entitlements after claiming his morbid obesity was related to the drinking culture he experienced during his service with the Royal Australian Air Force at Laverton and overseas. The Administrative Appeals Tribunal of Australia heard that after the veteran suffered an injury and became depressed, he said “it was nothing” for him to drink 24 stubbies in one night. The man, who served from 1974 to 1994, sought a review of the Veterans’ Review Board decision that his morbid obesity and hypertension were not related to service and he was not entitled to a special rate of pension. The tribunal heard that the man, who is 178 centimetres tall, weighed 131 kilograms when he was assessed last July. Prior to enlisting, the man said he would only drink at family gatherings. During his 10-week recruitment course, he would spend his free time, six nights a week, at a recruits’ tavern, where he would drink at least six schooners of beer followed by a shot of rum. He said his drinking decreased when he was posted at Laverton but increased after he was posted to Malaysia. In the original decision, the Repatriation Commission contended that a veteran’s service must be more than merely “the setting” in which they take up or increase drinking or smoking and “the culture of drinking is not itself sufficient”. The tribunal accepted that the man’s exposure to alcohol increased once on service but said it was not a requirement of service or something that arose out of his employment with the service. The tribunal ruled that there was no causal connection.

Mayor, councillor to step down By Benjamin Millar

Gutsy chicken bounces back

(Joe Mastroianni)

At least two Maribyrnong councillors will call it quits in the lead-up to October’s local government election. Independent councillor and former mayor Grant Miles will join incumbent mayor Cameron McDonald in stepping down. Councillor Nam Quach is yet to confirm his intention, leaving four of the current councillors to recontest the election. Cr McDonald said he had come to council with a list of things he wanted to do, including a focus on Pipemaker’s Park and the riverfront. “It’s been great … everything I wanted to do is either done or has a plan.” Cr Miles confirmed he would also step down. “Five years ago, I said if I was successful I would only remain for one term, and I won’t be changing anything about that.” Incumbent Labor councillors Michael Clarke and Martin Zakharov (Yarraville ward) and Sarah Carter (River ward) will all be re-contesting their positions, along with independent councillor of almost 20 years, Catherine Cumming (Stony Creek ward). Taking another tilt for Labor will be former councillors John Cumming in River ward and Cuc Lam in Stony Creek, while the party has also endorsed Pam Mulready in Yarraville and Karimm Degal in Stony Creek. The Greens will be fielding Simon Crawford in Yarraville, Georgia Webster in River and Daniel Cash in Stony Creek. Independent candidates who have announced their intention to run include West Welcome Wagon founder Mia McGregor (Yarraville), Elisa Kim Huynh (Stony Creek) and Yarraville Village Says No to Paid Parking convenor Megan Darling (Stony Creek). Nominations close at noon September 20.

Marian the plucky chicken has shown nothing can ruffle her feathers by emerging from surgery with amazing stamina. She is the first chicken to be treated at Dr Paws veterinary clinic in Altona North. Her owner, Little River resident Marissa Lang, said she was alarmed when she found her black copper maran lying motionless. “I came home one day and I saw her lying on the ground … I thought she was dead,” she said. While some might balk at paying a hefty vet’s bill for a chicken, Ms Lang didn’t think twice. “She was one of my little favourites,” she said. “She was always one of the first ones to come up when I let them out of the coop in the morning and she’d eat out of your hand.” Marian was rushed to the clinic, where Ms Lang’s daughter works, and diagnosed with “milky eye”. Unfortunately, the eye had to be removed and the underweight chicken’s chances of survival were given as about 50/50. Ms Lang said Marian not only survived but had more than doubled her weight from 920 grams at diagnosis to a healthy 2.5 kilograms today. “We thought that she wouldn’t be laying eggs for months but, to our surprise, probably about three or four weeks after the surgery she laid her first egg,” she said. Workers strike jobs deal By Adem Saban Warehouse workers at Truganina are celebrating after winning a battle for pay rises and job security for casuals. As many as 650 Polar Fresh workers walked off the job last Wednesday after wage claim negotiations broke down. Workers were calling for a $3 an hour pay rise and for casual employees to be offered secure employment. The three-day strike came to an end last Friday after workers voted in favour of an agreement struck by the National Union of Workers, Polar Fresh and staff and union delegates. The workers won an average wage increase of 4.75 per cent per year, which means they will be making $31 an hour by 2019. The current industry standard is $30 an hour. An additional 120 new secure jobs were also part of the deal, which ensures 50 permanent full-time and 70 labour hire agency workers are transferred to direct employment. Working conditions, such as breaks, rostered days off, and double-time for overtime after two hours, are also part of the new deal. National Union of Workers spokeswoman Emma Kerin described the result as a “fantastic win for the workers in the western suburbs”. “There are a lot of casual workers directly employed through a labour hire agency who don’t get guaranteed shifts and don’t earn enough to survive,” Ms Kerin said. Polar Fresh employee and Werribee resident Russell Turban said the pay rise is deserved. “We work hard, some of us six days a week just to make ends meet, we deserve a pay rise,” he said. The Truganina warehouse stocks chilled perishables for Coles stores across the state.

NEWS

Anti-frackers get air time Anti-fracking protesters flew kites in Williamstown on Saturday sending a message to the state government by targeting the electorate of Williamstown MP and Resources Minister Wade Noonan. The government is to decide within weeks whether to permanently ban fracking, onshore gas drilling and new licences for gas exploration in Victoria. Protest organiser Catherine Hearse said protesters also surveyed locals along the Strand and Douglas Parade. “Of 138 locals surveyed, 98 per cent said they were concerned about the potential impacts of the onshore gas and fracking industry and 87 per cent said they would support a permanent ban on the industry in Victoria,” she said. Ms Hearse said 74 communities across Victoria had declared themselves “gasfield free”. “There’s no social licence for this,” she said. “If this onshore gas extraction goes on in the country, it really is going to affect city people. Eighty per cent of Australia’s dairy [product] comes from Victoria.” An upper house committee had given the government until July to decide whether to implement a permanent ban, but the government requested more time due to a cabinet reshuffle. A moratorium on fracking and onshore gas will remain in place until a decision is made this month.

Tall tales sail into town It will be like a vision from another century when the world’s biggest wooden ship sails into Williamstown this month. Tenacious arrived in Sydney last week after a nine-month, 29,000 kilometre voyage from the UK. It will dock at Williamstown’s Seaworks on August 14 and host open days and day sails and voyages until next April. Tenacious is one of two tall ships operated by the Jubilee Sailing Trust, the United Nations-accredited charity formed in the UK in 1978. About half the crew of 40 have a disability and the ship is made for people of all abilities. It has wheelchair-accessible rigging and masts, Braille signs and speaking compasses for the visually impaired. Hobsons Bay mayor and Seaworks board member Peter Hemphill said he was proud

Williamstown would be the ship’s official home port in Melbourne. “Its arrival will encourage people to visit Williamstown in what is traditionally an off peak period,” he said, “And will provide visitors with other opportunities, such as access to both Seaworks and the Sea Shepherd’s Steve Irwin, which is frequently in port. “Williamstown would have had hundreds of these tall ships arriving and leaving port, it’s… a great throwback to our maritime heritage.” The public is invited to watch the Tenacious dock at Seaworks at 2pm on August 14, with its first open day on August 17. ‘Dog’s breakfast’ design By Goya Dmytryshchak Residents donned gas masks on Saturday to protest against the Western Distributor shifting air pollution and truck traffic into Spotswood. The Spotswood South Kingsville Residents Group rallied at McLean Reserve against the proposed road design, which would shift truck traffic to their neighbourhood, right next to Spotswood’s only sports field and kindergarten. Spokeswoman Christine Harris said the group was also against Simcock Avenue being used as an entry or exit point. “One of the aims of this project is to get trucks off residential streets, and it doesn’t make sense to move them to an even quieter local street,” she said. “It’s currently our quiet entry and exit point to the suburb, and we don’t want it becoming a major truck route. “They’re talking about 1000 vehicles going along there to get onto the on ramp, 500 of those being trucks carrying dangerous goods – placarded trucks. “That’s also the entrance for Scienceworks, which has half a million visitors every year, mainly families and children.” The protest came as a Hobsons Bay councillor described the road design as a “dog’s breakfast”. Cr Angela Altair said the new road would negatively impact residents and industry on the Hobsons Bay side of the West Gate Bridge. “It’s a dog’s breakfast of a design and I’m yet to speak to anybody who thinks it is an efficient and effective way to manage traffic off the freeway, so it’s not even going to solve any problems.” The council at last week’s meeting reaffirmed its “strong position for both the on and off ramps to be sited north of the freeway while protecting Stony Creek”, and its “deep disappointment with the state government”.

Distributor ‘fix’ for missing link A missing link in the Federation Trail will be completed as part of the Western Distributor project. A 3.5 kilometre stretch of the shared trail between Williamstown Road and Hyde Street at Yarraville will be built as part of almost 10 kilometres of new and improved cycling and pedestrian paths. New paths will run on both sides of Kororoit Creek, and separated paths will cross beneath the West Gate Freeway on both sides of Millers Road and Williamstown Road. Roads Minister Luke Donnellan said citybound sections of path will also be elevated at key road crossings near the port, and nearly one kilometre of new paths will link the Somerville Road-Whitehall Street intersection with the Maribyrnong River. Traffic lights on Hyde Street will connect the Federation Trail to the Hobsons Bay Coastal Trail and Bay Trail. But concerns have been raised the plan leaves a safety gap on Hyde Street. Western suburbs Greens MP Colleen Hartland said the upgrades are welcome, but appear to leave another missing link. “Hyde Street will become even more dangerous for cyclists if the western distributor is built due to the new truck off-ramps,” she said. “No upgrades appear to be planned for it, yet it is the crucial link between the Federation Trail running along the West Gate Freeway and Footscray Road.”

People protested at McLean Reserve in Spotswood, against the new Western Distributor freeway coming too close to the kindergarten and reserve. (Damjan Janevski)

Grappling for a medal By Benjamin Millar Sahit Prizreni has high hopes of putting wrestling on the map when he dons the green and gold of Australia at the Rio Olympics this month. The 33-year-old has qualified in the 65kg freestyle and is one of our best hopes for a medal in a sport he has cherished for as long as he can recall. A household name in his native Albania, Prizreni has fast made a splash in Australian wrestling since being naturalised in 2014 and winning back-to-back national titles in 2015 and 2016. He has been honing his skills at Maribyrnong Secondary College under Australia’s most successful wrestling coach, 84-year-old Sam Parker. Parker sees Prizreni as the best chance yet to snare a medal. He competed for Albania at the 2004 Olympics in Athens and marched with the country’s flag at the opening ceremony of the 2008 Beijing Games, after finishing third in the 60kg World freestyle championships in 2007. “I think the Olympics is the biggest thing for each athlete,” he said. “I’ve got all the experience I need; I think I feel very prepared.” Prizreni said success would be an opportunity to “pay back” Parker for believing in him and a chance to say thank you to Australia for being so welcoming. He also hopes it would raise the profile of a sport he says is one of the most complex in the Games. “It’s about so many things, the way you move, walk, speak, it’s about strength but also flexibility,” he said. “When I was growing there was nothing but wrestling in my home town. This is my life.”

Co-director Ian Tran said it was an exciting and unexpected honour to have the first film he had made selected for such a prestigious event. “I remember about 25 years ago as a kid I was having a pretty tough day and I stopped for a doughnut and he gave me some for free,” he said. “It was such a simple act of kindness but it always made me think I wanted to be like that and to repay it one day.” Olympic Nick: A Donutumentary will screen August 11 and 14. Youth hit by mental health delays By Goya Dmytryshchak Young people in Hobsons Bay are facing an unprecedented six-month wait for free mental health counselling through the council’s youth services. Hobsons Bay’s youth aged 12-25 experience more psychological distress and psychiatric hospitalisations than anywhere in Victoria, data from the Department of Early Education and Childhood Development reveals. In 2009-10, the rate of psychiatric

hospitalisations for 10-17 years olds in Hobsons Bay was almost double that of the western metropolitan region, and the state. Last week’s council meeting heard there had been an unprecedented spike in young people seeking counselling for issues such as depression and anger management. Cr Sandra Wilson said she became aware of the issue through a friend whose daughter was unable to access counselling. “There’s been – I’m reluctant to use the term but we’ll say – a bit of a blowout in the waiting

list,” she said. “It’s a 23-week waiting list. What happens in the circumstances where young people aren’t able to access the services that we’re providing?” Council director Peter Hunt said young people assessed as being in need of urgent assistance could be referred to other agencies. “There’s been pretty much an unprecedented level of demand,” Mr Hunt said. “There’s been a real spike in demand for service in the last few months. We have no real explanation or rationale for that.”

Hobsons Bay’s Youth Services provided counselling for 37 young people between June 24 and July 21. The main presenting issues were depression, anxiety, eating disorders, psychosis, anger management and family problems. Emergency relief was also provided to 39 young people and their families. The council says there is a shortage of mental health support in the municipality with the closest Headspace counselling services located at Sunshine and Werribee. Accessing these services by public transport is another barrier.

A war homage in metal Association. Phillips’ contribution, titled facets of reflection, consists of a bouquet of forged crystalline-like forms emerging from a ruptured, pewter-filled artillery shell. Phillips said the work reflected the devastation wrought by war and also the forces of creation and renewal that emerged after war. “The idea came together with my wife – to have something beautiful come out of something ugly and deadly. “She’s Belgian and her grandfather was affected by mustard gas in World War I. This was a mustard gas shell.” Phillips said having his work chosen for the exhibition reflected the high level of metal art being undertaken in Melbourne’s west. He runs regular courses at the Waterside Metal Art Studios on Maribyrnong Street with local blacksmith Jack Wylestone. Details: watersidemetalart.org Benjamin Millar

A Footscray blacksmith is forging his way on to the world metal-art stage. Estebaan Dante, otherwise known as Steve Phillips, has been invited to join some of the world’s leading artist blacksmiths in a prestigious exhibition in Belgium next month. The exhibition, titled Transitions, will be part of events commemorating the 100th anniversary of World War I. Phillips said he first felt the blacksmithing bite when he studied the art during a midlife sabbatical about eight years ago. “Over the last few years I have run a couple of festivals at Waterside Metal Arts Studio and have had Belgian blacksmiths come out to Footscray. They advised me about this exhibition, so I decided to put forward an application.” The selection panel was impressed by his exhibition proposal and so he was invited to submit a piece for the exhibition in Ypres, organised by the British Artist Blacksmith

MY PLACE Marilyn King has dedicated herself to supporting mature-age unemployed workers and their families, but she tells Benjamin Millar she still finds the odd moment for writing or a moment to reflect in her favourite park. What’s your connection with West Footscray? We bought our property in 2000 and later went interstate, but we have been back here since 2010. We have lived all over the world but this is totally different from anything I have experienced. What do you love most about it? I just find it such a wonderful blend of cultures. It feels like as much of a home as somewhere can be for people who are perpetual wanderers. We live in a street that has Christmas parties. My husband says if he’s walking up to get the bus, he has to leave early because you have to chat to everyone on the way. You have all the benefits of living close to the city, but still have the culture and friendliness and variety.

We love our local park down on Essex Street, but my absolute most favourite spot is the Suffolk Triangle Park, just around the corner from us. It used to have a lot of rubbish there, until some of the local people came together and they have turned it into a lovely park, a great place to go and sit. There is a group that meets there to play bocce. It’s got a little labyrinth. It really has a wonderful energy – it’s a wonderful, peaceful spot. What can you tell us about your community work? The thing that takes up most of my time is Willing Older Workers, the charity I started.

(Joe Mastroianni)

Do you have a favourite place?

It’s not only the food program – I also do a lot of advocacy, for people having trouble with their banks or things like that. I’m involved in a few other things in my neighbourhood such as the Repair Cafe. I’m going to be on a disability advisory committee for the council. When I get time, I volunteer with Variety Victoria.

What are you passionate about? Creative writing is my absolute passion. I was published in an American anthology … a true life story about my experience. I was injured when I was young – I fell off a horse. So it was about watching my daughter on a horse … that

awareness I could have let my fears overcome me and stop her, but didn’t. When I turned 15 I wrote a list of things I wanted to do before I die. Over time I have been ticking them off. I want to do the Silk Road and learn to ice skate and ski. Now that I have a walking stick, it’s going to be a challenge – but I’ll do it.

Gators bow out in style

Sports shorts Lacrosse

Lacrosse Victoria’s top three men’s state league clubs, Williamstown, Surrey Park and Footscray, all lodged wins. All three have an 11-2 record and sit five games clear of fourth-placed Malvern. Williamstown accounted for Eltham 13-6, while Footscray mauled Caulfield 14-5. In women’s state league, Newport is closing in on the minor premiership after a 12-5 win over Williamstown.

By Lance Jenkinson Altona Gators saved their best till last, smashing the hapless Pakenham Warriors 77-47 at the Altona Sports Centre on Sunday, thus ending a difficult Big V basketball women’s division 2 season on a high note. Gators’ coach Amanda Aldridge was proud her team stuck at it late in the season when injuries piled up, and motivation could have waned with finals off the radar. “Winning in the last game and going out on a high was really good for the girls,” Aldridge said. “They really had to push through the last few weeks after losing some key players due to injury, but they played right through and never once dropped their heads through the season.” It was an emotional day for Altona as the Gators farewelled veterans Emma Coyne, Paige Lenferna and Naomi Robinson. If not for this trio coming out of retirement, the Gators might not have even had a team this season. But they wanted to help out former teammate Aldridge, who was appointed to kickstart the revival of the club’s women’s program. It bought Aldridge an extra year to recruit, and gave the youth league players another season to develop. Coyne, the Gators’ captain, wanted to play on, but a move away from the area has made it impossible. “If she wasn’t moving to Mornington, she would’ve had another crack next year,” Aldridge said. “Lenferna travelled from Geelong each week to play for the Gators. She wanted one last season with Coyne and Robinson before drawing the curtain on her career. Robinson was the oldest player in the squad

43 MARIBYRNONG & HOBSONS BAY STAR WEEKLY \ AUGUST 3, 2016

SPORT Falcons swoop in finals action preview “It was always about finishing in the top two, and I don’t think it makes a difference finishing on top, but it’s nice ” It was an almost perfect first quarter at the attacking end for the Falcons, who led by six goals at quarter-time. “We made one error in the attacking end, and that happened in the first 30 seconds,” Lind said. “It was almost flawless. It was good to get a start like that – it gave the girls confidence.” The Lightning made a few positional changes, which seemed to work, and then settled into the game. The margin was back to two goals at the main break. “They made less errors once they settled,” Lind said. “A couple of things went their way and they looked at who matched up better. “It was a good sign for us that our attacking end counteracted, they were able to handle the pressure.”

The margin blew out to five or six again in the second half, but once again the Lightning found a way back, falling just short of the line. Kath Knott scored 35 goals while Julia Woolley scored 13. The win came without goaler Jane Cook, whose workload is being managed. She’s likely to return for the first week of the finals. The division 1 team also secured a top-two finish on Wednesday. The under-19s had already sealed their finals spot, but now will have to settle for third or fourth. The championship side will play the final round of the season against Peninsula Waves on Wednesday night, before playing Lightning on Saturday afternoon for a spot in the grand final. Tara Murray

Magic casts finals spell By Lance Jenkinson Altona Magic coach Vlado Tortevski has declared the Football Federation Victoria men’s state league 1 title race as good as over. The Magic has taken a massive nine-point lead at the top of the table after a stirring 1-0 win over Preston Lions at BT Connor Reserve on Sunday. Tortevski believes there is no stopping his side from going on to claim the title, even with six weeks of matches still to be played. “For me, this is the game that decided it,” Tortevski told Star Weekly. “These three points is the championship.” From the outset it was obvious how much it meant to come home with those three points. The Magic has been lauded all season for their entertaining, attacking brand of football, but this was lacking against Preston. It was a more nervous and subdued Magic, seemingly more intent on limiting mistakes than wowing fans with breathtaking football. But it was mighty effective. Once the Magic hit the front through a Jon McShane goal, they absorbed everything Preston threw at them to preserve their advantage. “I’m sorry we didn’t play really good soccer like we usually do, but this is the circumstances, we needed the three points and that’s what it was all about,” Tortevski said. “We changed the tactic and made sure everything was going to be alright because one-nil was going to be enough for us. “It wasn’t a pretty game, but we came here to achieve something and we achieved it. “We proved that we can play under pressure.” McShane’s goal came 25 minutes into the match. The striker got on the end of a cross from Nikola Markovski and wrong-footed the Preston defenders to score at the far post. “Nikola was on the right side, he passed one player and a second player and, when everyone was expecting him to shoot, he cut it back to Jon,” Tortevski said. “Jon did something special, he beat a player and everyone dived to the first post, then he put the ball in the opposite side. “That was a good finish from a very experienced striker.” Tortevski went as far as saying that McShane is too good for local football. McShane, who has played at the top level in Scotland with St Mirren and Hamilton Academical, has scored 14 goals in 15 games with the Magic. “His ability is not for this league, he’s a player for A-League,” Tortevski said. “With his mind 100 per cent on the game, he’s a player that can play A-League, and I’m really surprised how one of these managers haven’t realised that and given him the opportunity.”

IN THE DOGHOUSE ■ This

time of year on the sporting calendar is most interesting, for a number of reasons. The footy finals are on the horizon, racing starts to go up a gear and the international horses will be here before you know it. We have the added impact of the Olympic Games, starting this weekend, and cricket is just a few weeks away. The end of the home-and-away season in all levels of footy brings talk of the movement of players and the signings or sackings of coaches. Last week Albion announced Chris O’Keefe as its senior coach for 2017 and beyond. The dual Barry Priest medallist and premiership player and coach with Spotswood, returns to the WRFL after three seasons at Bungaree. He replaces Aaron Tymms, who leaves O’Keefe with the foundation to build a strong team. Albion has produced some outstanding juniors in recent years, like Josh Bench and Todd Finco, and has a bright future. O’Keefe will be a playing coach, not an easy task these days.

■ There

are several rumours regarding other clubs and possible coaches, with Spotswood one of the most talked-about. Tom Langlands has stepped down after three seasons but will continue as a player, which is good news as ‘Motor’ is a gun player who will relish the freedom of not being the coach. The Woodsmen have also signed Murray Boyd, Elliot Wood and a number of their talented under-19s and expect to announce the new coach this week. I’m tipping it will be a well-known and successful local footy identity who will need no introduction.

■ Jason

Akermanis was a guest at the Werribee pre-match breakfast last weekend, as two of his North Albury players were playing for the Tigers in the development league. The three-time AFL premiership player and Brownlow medallist certainly looked different – no hair highlights nor coloured beard – and he seems a changed man. I did many interviews with Jason during his time at the Bulldogs and it was obvious he had a large ego. I think he still does but has realised he had to change to be part of the real world. His answers to my questions last Sunday were a breath of fresh air … he was self-effacing and honest. He wants to coach at the elite level and is doing his apprenticeship. He’s in his fourth year at North Albury and I wouldn’t be surprised to see him make a move very soon. Kevin Hillier

The Magic will be out to extend its winning streak to six games when it hosts Sydenham Park at Paisley Park on Saturday evening. In other games, Altona East Phoenix moved three points above the relegation zone with a 2-0 win over Diamond Valley United, while Yarraville Glory was beaten 3-2 away to Westgate in a five-goal thriller. In state league 2, Altona City kept the

promotion door open with a 2-1 win over ladder leader Geelong. City is six points behind second-placed Essendon Royals. It was an entertaining weekend for fans of local sides in state league 3, with Williamstown beating La Trobe University 3-2 to keep its top-two hopes alive and Melbourne City going down 4-3 to Melbourne University.

City West Falcons got a sneak peak of what finals action will be like in the Victorian Netball League championship division season. With two rounds to go, the Falcons are already secure with a top-two spot, but on Wednesday night the battle was on for top spot. The Falcons and Melbourne University Lightning were equal on points, the winner assured of finishing on top unless there’s a surprise final round slip-up. The game didn’t disappoint with Falcons’ coach Marg Lind saying it was worthy of a main final. The Falcons got out to an early break, but the second half saw the teams go goal-for-goal. Falcons held on to lead at every break and eventually won 48-47. Lind said she couldn’t have asked for any more from the game. “It was a great contest and I really enjoyed it.

Dogs turn it on in the last for huge win Thrill dogs Footscray’s past seven VFL games have been decided by two goals or less. Round 17: Box Hill Hawks, won by five points Round 16: Northern Blues, lost by six points Round 15: Casey Scorpions, won by one point Round 14: Richmond, won by nine points Round 13: Coburg, lost by 12 points Round 12: Frankston, won by 10 points Round 11: Geelong, won by seven points

Footscray stormed home to snatch a five-point win over Box Hill Hawks in the VFL at the Whitten Oval on Saturday. The Bulldogs kicked five unanswered goals in the last quarter to overturn a 31-point three-quarter time deficit and register a remarkable victory. It was a huge result for the Dogs as it all but books their place in the finals and keeps their double-chance hopes alive. Nathan Hrovat was the catalyst for Footscray with two goals in a best-on-ground performance. The ever-consistent Lukas Webb and Jordan Russell continued their fine seasons. Footscray has been taking its fans on a wild ride of late. The Bulldogs’ past seven games have been decided by two goals or less.

The sixth-placed Dogs will make the short trip to Williamstown for a derby at Burbank Oval on Sunday. Williamstown, the reigning premier, is flying high at the top of the ladder. The Seagulls had a fairly comfortable 24-point win over fast-finishing Sandringham at Trevor Baker Beach Oval. Arryn Siposs and Dylan Conway kicked three goals apiece for the Seagulls, while Willie Wheeler was best-on-ground. Devils climb to the top

Star women join Bulldogs

By Lance Jenkinson The tug-of-war for top spot has swung back in favour of North Footscray in division 2 of the WRFL. The Devils took advantage of Yarraville-Seddon’s slip-up to Glen Orden on Saturday to replace them at the summit with a 61-point thrashing of third-placed Caroline Springs on the road at Town Centre Oval on Saturday. Devils co-coach Matt Walsh said he wanted to see his team bring its best football to the table in a blockbuster game after a below-par showing against Yarraville-Seddon two weeks earlier – and that’s exactly what he got. “We were really disappointing against Yarraville two weeks ago,” Walsh said after the match. “Only one player actually won his position on the day and we didn’t stand up against quality opposition. So we really had to respond today and by the look in the boys’ eyes before the game, you could tell they were on.” There was a noticeable difference in the defensive intensity displayed by North Footscray compared to two weeks earlier. The Devils applied a massive 20 tackles in the first quarter alone to restrict Caroline Springs to three goals, even though they were kicking with a five-goal breeze. Five second-quarter goals with the wind set the Devils on their way to a comfortable win as they kicked 15 of the last 20 goals of the match, including two each to Alex Ford, Max Rampling, Kaine Williams, Sam Kater and Kieran Murphy. “We put them under pressure from the outset,” Walsh said. “Every time they won the footy, there was somebody on them. It made them make poor decisions.” Devils half-back Brad McNicol stood head and shoulders above the other 43 players on the

ground. He did not make a mistake defensively and carved up his opponent with ball in hand. “He was best on ground by a mile,” Walsh said. “He was everywhere, in the right spots at the right times and read the ball really well.” Lyndon McIlroy and Daniel Neville were also influential for North Footscray in the back half. Josh Van Den Berg was good in the ruck, while Murphy, Rampling and Brayden Montebruno

feasted on the service. But one concern for the Devils was the report of defender Tyson Bock for striking. Elsewhere in division 2, Yarraville-Seddon went down to Glen Orden by 15 points in a low-scoring game at Heathdale Oval, while West Footscray was handed the wooden spoon after a 93-point loss to second-last Manor Lakes at Shorten Reserve.

Western Bulldogs have put two key pillars in place for the launch of next year’s AFL National Women’s League competition. Key forward Katie Brennan and inside midfielder Ellie Blackburn were unveiled as the Bulldogs’ marquee players for the inaugural season. Bulldogs director of football Chris Grant said he was thrilled by the key signings. “We believe we have secured two of the most talented and exciting young players in the game,” Grant said. “We’re confident both Katie and Ellie will help us to develop long-term success for our women’s side and we look forward to having them as Western Bulldogs players for a long time.” Brennan is well-known to Bulldogs fans, after representing the club in five exhibition matches. An athletic key forward, the 23-year-old Queenslander claimed the 2015 Susan Alberti Award for best and fairest in the 2015 exhibition series. She has been a goal machine at local level, kicking more than 50 goals in the past three seasons with Darebin Falcons. Blackburn’s signature was also highly sought after as the 21-year-old from Berwick had already established a reputation as one of the top young midfielders in the Women’s VFL for her fleet feet, calmness in traffic and defensive talents. The new league will hold a draft in October for all clubs to round out their playing lists. Lance Jenkinson
