work with council in the best interests of children and families. Spokeswoman Angie Farrugia said staff would have first preference for vacant positions at other ECMS centres in the area. “We’ll be working with staff over the coming months to assess their needs, wishes and the available options,” she said. Council community services director Clem Gillings said the council has recently redeveloped and expanded a number of other centres. “The closure of the Empire Early Learning Centre will affect 32 children currently placed at the centre,” she said.

Families currently enrolled at Empire Early Learning Centre requiring childcare in 2017 will be offered places at ECMS-managed Maribyrnong River Children’s Centre or Bulldogs Community Children’s Centre. Ms Gillings said the closure was discussed with ECMS staff and parents last week and support was provided to both staff and families. She said the council would not save any early years services costs as the children would be placed at other council-owned centres. The council is yet to consider its options for the future of the Empire Early Learning Centre site.

Parents and staff have been stunned by the sudden decision to close a Footscray childcare centre. Parents at Empire Street Early Learning Centre were devastated to learn their centre will close at the end of this year. Maribyrnong councillors made the decision behind closed doors last Tuesday night on the advice of council staff drawing from a 2014 review of early years services. Sophia Agneskis, who has her third child at the tight-knit centre, said the decision came without warning or input from parents.

“I had hoped there had been some kind of mistake,” she said. “Apparently this has been going on for months, but this is the first the families know about it.” Ms Agneskis said long-serving staff had been left in tears by a decision that would tear apart friendships and force upheaval on young children. She added that the council’s refusal to release the review hampered proper scrutiny. A letter to parents noted “physical limitations” at Empire Early Learning Centre “restrict its ability to meet the community’s changing needs and demands”. Meat processor fined over ‘manure smell’ included an upwind investigation along Somerville Road and a downwind investigation along Geelong Road to confirm the source,” he said. “The EPA officer in the field said the odour had pig or cow manure characteristics and confirmed the odour with a local resident who reported it to EPA.” He said JBS Australia received two remedial notices the day after it was fined following another community report of a rendering-process odour.

complaints to its pollution hotline, found “poor waste management practices” had caused smoke and burning odours to infiltrate nearby homes. In June, meat rendering company Australian Tallow Producers, in Geelong Road, was fined $1 million after a “rotting carcass smell” was emitted from its site three times between June and September 2011. EPA pollution hotline: 1300 372 842

“Given the smell was different from the previous day, and likely from a different source at the premises, EPA issued the company with two remedial notices, on top of the fine of $7500, to ensure processes are improved at the site and no further odours leave its boundary,” he said. Non-compliance can lead to penalties. Earlier this month, Western Land Reclamation, in Bunting Road, received an EPA remedial notice over burning waste. An EPA investigation, triggered by

Cranes cramp the view

Cop hit during Newport arrest

By Goya Dmytryshchak City views along the Strand at Williamstown and Newport have been disrupted by cranes towering more than 20 storeys high and brought in as part of the $1.6 billion port expansion. The robotic ship-to-shore cranes will move along about 660 metres on rails. Four have arrived, but one is destined for Brisbane. Two more cranes, visible from Williamstown, will arrive in September. The five Melbourne cranes will service the Victoria International Container Terminal at Webb Dock. Strand resident Denis Weily, who has been documenting the changing view from outside his home, said his worst fears had been realised. “And that doesn’t include the containers, which are going to go five high, so there are a lot more physical structures there than we [were shown] initially,” he said. “There’s buildings that are for repairing the cranes and housing refrigerated containers. “It’s totally different to what we saw [on original plans] … already there are a lot of structures there that weren’t signalled in the beginning.” Hobsons Bay councillor Angela Altair said the scale and proximity of the cranes took everyone by surprise. “The reality is far more imposing than the visual impressions we were shown during the public consultations,” she said. “I agree with the community that what was a really beautiful unimpeded vista for residents and visitors is now slightly less so.” Anchorage Restaurant general manager James Bolton said he was grateful residents had been successful in having the colour of cranes changed from bright orange to neutral grey. “Whilst the structures are a bit of an eyesore we still boast one of the best views of Melbourne in Melbourne” he said. Port of Melbourne chief executive Nick Easy said that in the past four years, the authority had adopted a transparent and inclusive approach to consultation over the cranes.

A police officer was taken to hospital after being hit in the face in Newport on Friday. Victoria Police spokesman Paul Turner said the officer was responding to a report of a woman being robbed and assaulted on a bus on Douglas Parade about 8pm. Police located the accused assailant, a 20-year-old Altona North man, in North Road. Leading Senior Constable Turner said police used capsicum spray to subdue the man when he became aggressive. “A short altercation took place and a male senior constable was struck to the face,” he said. “The man was arrested a short time later and has been charged with a number of robbery and assault offences.” Goya Dmytryshchak

Fire at squat ‘suspicious’ A fire that tore through a Maidstone house early Sunday morning is being treated as suspicious. Twenty-four firefighters took 40 minutes to control the blaze in Radio Street, which broke out soon after 3am. Fire crews arrived to find the single storey house fully engulfed in flames with the fire threatening houses either side of the property. Firefighters in breathing apparatus searched the property and tackled the blaze, which was made difficult due to a partial roof collapse at the rear. It is believed squatters were living at the property.

Bank’s sign considered bad form By Benjamin Millar A bank has come under fire over a sign placed in the window of its Footscray branch criticising an “inconsiderate person” for using the area as a place to sleep. The Bank of Melbourne went into damage control on Monday after Footscray resident Gemma Cafarella posted a photo of the sign on the bank’s Facebook page, along with statistics about homelessness and its link with family violence. “To think that the biggest victim in the scenario described in the sign is the bank

demonstrates a fairly startling disconnect between your bank and the struggles of people who are experiencing disadvantage,” her post said. “Nathan” from the Bank of Melbourne posted a reply apologising “for any offence taken”. “We will be addressing this directly with the branch manager, and will have this removed as soon as possible,” he said. Ms Cafarella, who works in tenancy law, told Star Weekly she was appalled by the sign and the bank’s inadequate response. “It reflects that they are not really engaging

with the issue and the attitude behind the sign,” she said. Ms Cafarella said the Bank of Melbourne was a subsidiary of Westpac, which last year posted a record profit of $7.8 billion. “It’s a window into a larger issue,” she said. “Walking around Footscray in the last year, it seems this issue of rough sleeping is on the rise. “There is not a lot of awareness around homelessness – it’s very easy for us to ‘other’ the homeless.” Some Facebook users defended the bank, arguing it was acting within its rights. But a customer commenting on Ms Cafaralla’s post

said the bank’s response would affect whether she remained with the bank. “I know banks aren’t compassionate institutions, but this is too much,” she said. Another user pointed out finding shelter in winter can be “a matter of life and death”. A Bank of Melbourne spokeswoman would not say who had placed the sign or when it was taken down, but said the bank was apologetic. “This zone is an unrestricted access area that’s open 24 hours, which means that sometimes it’s used as a place of shelter,” she said. “The express zone re-opened at 9.30am this morning, along with the rest of the branch.”

An apt app for our city Maribyrnong’s heart is well and truly on its sleeve in a new mobile phone app sharing the best the area has to offer. The ‘I ♥ Maribyrnong’ app is a Melbourne first which helps users discover and navigate the area’s many highlights. The free app, which can be used on both Apple and Android devices, guides users through the city with interactive maps, public transport information and an evolving guide to bars, cafes, shops, parks, gardens and sporting grounds. Categories within the app include ‘eat and drink’, ‘shopping destinations’, ‘parks and gardens’ and ‘getting around’. Listings can easily be shared via social media. Maribyrnong mayor Cameron McDonald said the new app offered an engaging way to learn about the area and its offerings. “We know locals and visitors alike enjoy

using it to explore places like Footscray – a foodie haven that reflects the melting pot of cultures in our city,” he said. “They can also discover our quaint villages Seddon and Yarraville, which are well-known for their unique shopping and cafes and our rolling parklands, such as the beautiful Footscray Park on the banks of the Maribyrnong River.” Cr McDonald said the app would help promote local businesses and attract new customers. The ‘I ♥ Maribyrnong’ app can be downloaded for free via iTunes or Google Play. Hoons put locals on edge

Cops resist bail for 14-year-old

By Benjamin Millar Maribyrnong residents fed up with hooning, crime and anti-social behaviour are calling for help in cleaning up their neighbourhood. Donna Jones was one of three Edgewater estate residents to address last week’s Maribyrnong council meeting to outline a litany of safety concerns. She said robberies, drug deals and other anti-social behavior were escalating and destroying a “beautiful neighbourhood”.

‘‘

A 14-year-old boy has been released on bail despite police arguing that his most recent alleged offending in May showed “a significant escalation in violence”. The prosecution opposed bail, saying that between March and June, the boy went missing from his Altona North supervised residential unit 14 times – more than once a week. Counsel for Victoria Police told the Supreme Court there was insufficient supervision at the Altona North unit and the boy’s release would endanger the safety of the community. The court heard the 14-year-old boy had allegedly committed assault in company on April 18, three days after being released on bail for criminal damage. He was again out on bail when he was charged with assaulting and robbing a number of people with five other youths on June 12. One victim suffered serious head injuries, including a broken cheekbone. In granting bail, Supreme Court Justice John Dixon said earlier this year the boy had been removed from the family home where he lived with his mother, grandmother and siblings. He said the boy might have been removed because he was considered uncontrollable and was engaging in innappropriate behaviour. The court heard the boy suffered mental impairment and had failed to attend a specialist school.

It’s pitch black and I get woken up by cars doing - Andrea Saunders burn-outs

’’

“We have all contacted the council … the issues, unfortunately, are escalating and none of us are happy with the response,” she said. Complaints were also raised at the council meeting about abandoned building projects, including gaming venue Club Edgewater. Andrea Saunders told the meeting the carpark on Magazine Way was attracting a range of unsavoury behaviour. “I see cars turning up – they all get out, I have no idea what’s going on,” she said. “It’s pitch black and I get woken up by cars doing burn-outs and skids.” The mother of two said living directly across the road from the carpark left her feeling unsafe in her own home. She said residents passing through the carpark regularly found syringes and up to a dozen used condoms at a time. “I’ve rung the police and they say there should be some form of lighting there,” she said.

Donna Jones is dismayed by anti-social begaviour at Edgewater. (Damjan Janevski)

Maribyrnong planning services director Nigel Higgins said the carpark was managed by Working Heritage. Working Heritage executive officer Ross Turnbull told Star Weekly concerns about the carpark had only recently been brought to his attention by the council.

Cheaper insurance premiums for your business

“This is the first I had heard of it,” he said. “I must admit I was surprised because the carpark is quite open – it’s not a place you would go to conduct nefarious business.” Mr Turnbull said he was happy to work with the council on potential improvements such as upgraded lighting.

Bulldogs inspire pups Aspiring footballers in the west have laced up their boots for a chance to sharpen their skills with Western Bulldogs stars. About 50 children from junior footy teams in Melbourne’s west took part in a pop-up clinic at Whitten Oval last week, rubbing shoulders with Bulldogs such as Jake Stringer. Stringer said he enjoyed sharing some time and tips with the junior footballers. “These clinics are a great opportunity for players to work with the community and give back to our junior supporters, who show us so much support throughout the year,” he said. The clinic was organised by property developer Dacland, which has partnered with the Western Bulldogs to promote healthy, active lifestyles.

The 2016 club sponsor supports the club’s Whitten Project leadership program, along with the Dahlhaus Clubhouse kids’ footy clinics attended by about 1000 young Bulldogs members in recent months. Dacland managing director John Dwyer said the clinics were a way to inspire kids to keep active. “It’s important to balance our busy lifestyles with plenty of healthy outdoor activity,” he said. “To further support healthy lifestyles for residents in our communities, we work with the Western Bulldogs and local community groups in their efforts to build strong and healthy communities.” Benjamin Millar

Council behind demise: Big West By Benjamin Millar A push by Maribyrnong council for the Big West Festival to move from a biennial to a yearly event was a key factor in its demise, the festival’s board claims. Star Weekly earlier this month reported an artist-led grassroots fight for the festival to be saved following the board’s decision to wrap-up the 20-year festival and organisation at the end of this year. A statement by the board notes that one of the primary considerations behind the decision was pressure from the council to move to an annual format. “This was a significant shift, as they have previously funded the development year, as well as the biennial festival,” the board noted. Its statement, issued last week, argued the council’s push was at odds with philanthropic partners seeking “long, deep engagement between artists and communities”. Artists have also raised concerns that funding by the council came via its marketing arm rather than the arts and culture portfolio. Council’s planning services director Nigel Higgins said the council has backed Big West Festival as a signature event for two decades. “Council has provided funding in excess of $80,000 per year for the past six years,” he said. He said the council respects that the Big West Board is the independent decision-maker on the running of their festival. The possibility of the festival’s survival appears increasingly remote now, after the board’s refusal to consider a six-week freeze on winding up, a request made at a meeting last week with the Save Big West campaign. Save Big West spokesman Hoang Tran Nguyen said the refusal came as a shock, and his group would fight on.

No snag in this fishy tale An Altona couple has landed a whopping 150.95-kilogram southern bluefin tuna, one of the biggest ever caught off the coast of Portland. Robbie Adamo said he and partner Amy Jobson had made a last-minute decision to hook up his five-metre boat and go fishing. “I can’t argue that it was the best decision I’ve made this southern bluefin tuna season,” he said. “Leaving the harbour, I travelled towards where I had previously caught fish and I received a call from a friend who had found bait (fish). “I had a strong feeling that if I was going to hook up, this was the place.” But after trawling around for a while, Mr Adamo said he couldn’t catch anything other than bait fish. “So my plans changed and I was travelling away when my godfather’s rod that was in the corner with our favourite Evil Angel lure started screaming,” he said. “Within 15 minutes we had gaffed the tuna. “With only two of us on board and after several attempts we managed to get it into the boat. “At first we didn’t realise how big it actually was. It was a breathtaking fish … 150.95 kilograms.” Goya Dmytryshchak

Haddara jail appeal denied By Goya Dmytryshchak A member of a western suburbs crime family has lost a bid to have his two-year jail term for “ice” trafficking reduced. Ziad Haddara lodged an appeal in the Supreme Court of Appeal arguing that his sentence was excessive, he was less blameworthy due to post traumatic stress disorder and the sentencing judge had failed to consider whether methlyamphetamine or ice was more or less harmful than another drug of dependence.

Last September, he was sentenced to two years with a non-parole period of 14 months for trafficking ice and cannabis, possessing a prohibited weapon, dealing with property suspected of being proceeds of crime and obtaining property by deception. Ziad Haddara is the cousin of Fadi Haddara, who was named in court as the ringleader of an organised crime syndicate trafficking ice and firearms in the western suburbs. They were both arrested as part of Skyborne, an anti-gangland operation in which police concealed listening devises and cameras at

The court heard Haddara also took $10,000 from the operative in exchange for supplying a new revolver he had no intention of supplying. On one occasion, Haddara told the operative he was willing to pay $20,000 for three litres of “liquid pseudo” so he could make as much ice as wanted. In refusing Ziad Haddara’s appeal, the judges said his sentence had been too lenient. Fadi Haddara was last year sentenced to just under two years’ jail with no minimum and three years on a community corrections order.

Fadi Haddara’s panelbeating shop in Orange Street, Williamstown North. Covert operatives purchased from the crime syndicate a total of 395 grams of ice, two handguns and a sawn-off rifle to a total value of $155,250. Telephone intercepts showed Ziad Haddara was selling ice on a daily basis. Nine times he met with an operative, selling up to an ounce of ice for $10,000 each time. They mostly met in McDonald’s carparks at Truganina or Altona North, but also at Haddara’s home in Truganina.

Arts lead Newport revival The Substation arts venue at Newport has been awarded $300,000 over four years from the state government through Creative Victoria. It’s a reversal of fortunes for the centre, which will also receive $1,050,000 over three years from Hobsons Bay council. The former power station turned multidisciplinary arts space changed its director in February last year, with Brad Spolding inheriting a difficult financial position. “It’s the first time The Substation has ever secured ongoing organisational funding from Creative Victoria,” he said. “What this money allows us to do is to work with artists … to program work, commission work, develop work, present work. “And that was really my hope all along. “What we’re doing is really trying to create a space for artists who make contemporary work … new work that talks to the new audiences.

“There’s a huge growing audience in this part of Melbourne – the fastest-growing area in Australia. “So, new artists doing new work for new audiences, which looks at and talks to our place in Melbourne – being in the west, being in Newport, being in Hobsons Bay.” Last year, The Substation had no arts program because of its vulnerable financial situation, Mr Spolding said. “I don’t think it’s any secret … The Substation was in a very precarious position,” he said. Other inner-west recipients of four-year Creative Victoria grants include Footscray Community Arts Centre ($924,000), Yarraville-based Ausdance Victoria ($520,000) Footscray’s Snuff Puppets ($449,820), Western Edge Youth Arts ($320,000), Women’s Circus ($292,320) and Overland magazine ($240,000). MY PLACE Altona North’s Geoff Mitchelmore is a former industrial chemist who has devoted his life to greening Kororoit Creek. He speaks with Goya Dmytryshchak.

I came to the city of Altona from Morwell in the Latrobe Valley in 1967 with my wife and young family. I’ve been a resident in Altona North for 49 years. I was employed in the gas industry for 33 years, attaining the position of chief chemist, gas and fuel, with the Fuel Corporation of Victoria. I spent 13 years as president of Altona North High School. I’ve been involved in amateur theatre in Altona and Altona North for nearly 25 years and a community activist involved mainly in improving the Altona North area, including traffic and health and safety issues. I’ve been president of Friends of Lower Kororoit Creek for 16 years and developed a partnership with Toyota to create the $1.8 million shared-trail connection to the western metropolitan trail network. What do you like about Altona North?

What’s your favourite local cafe and/or eatery? The Seaside Flatbread Cafe in Borrack Square is a favourite haunt for great coffee and fantastic cheese and spinach pie. What are you passionate about? I am passionate about developing the Kororoit Creek environmental corridor as a place for the community to visit and enjoy. National Tree Day on July 31 at the Urban Forest, Blackshaws Road, would be a great opportunity for the local community to visit and see the developments that have been taking place over the past 15 years through the efforts of a dedicated team of local residents involved with Friends of Lower Kororoit Creek. What would people be surprised to know about you?

What would you change?

I don’t have a green thumb and I have planted less than a hundred of the 50,000 trees that are now flourishing along the Kororoit Creek corridor in Altona North thanks to the Friends of Lower Kororoit Creek.

I would like to see the Altona North industrial estate isolated from residential Altona North, thus removing the dangerous heavy truck traffic that impacts on the local community. I would like the people who rubbish our city caught and severely dealt with.

Community members are invited to celebrate National Tree Day with Friends of Lower Kororoit Creek from 10am-1pm on Sunday, July 31. Meet at the Urban Forest in Blackshaws Road (opposite Crofts Reserve, Melway 40 H12), Altona North.

Its closeness to all facilities, including the ease of access to the City of Melbourne attractions.

in the listening situations you find challenging, so our free trial offer can be a huge help.”

Audiologist Daniel Fares, from Active Audiology, says recent studies of thousands of people in the US and UK have shown that, over time, hearing impaired individuals showed greater cognitive decline and a higher chance of cognitive impairment than people with normal hearing.

“Whatever the hearing issues, we have a large selection of devices from all the leading manufacturers. After thorough assessment, we’ll recommend the right device, one that’s comfortable, and will give the best long-term chance of remaining mentally active and healthy.”

Daniel says he has analysed these trials closely.

The clinic is government-accredited to provide free hearing services and aids to pensioners and DVA Goldcard holders, as well as services to self-funded retirees.

“The trials showed that hearing impaired people who used hearing aids had better cognition than those who didn’t,” he explains. “In my day-to-day work, I see a huge change in behaviour when I see clients after a few weeks of wearing hearing aids. “The communication pathways in the brain need to be stimulated, no differently to how other muscles in the body need to stay active. When you wear a hearing device to assist with hearing loss, even a mild one, you are keeping that pathway active and healthy.” Active Audiology is offering a free, no-obligation 14-day trial of the latest technology in hearing devices so now, Daniel says, is a great time to visit the independent clinic to have a chat about any hearing concerns. “The best way to find a hearing aid that works is

Visitors will enjoy a blast from the past when Jack’s Magazine opens as part of this weekend’s Open House Melbourne weekend. The former gunpowder magazine on the banks of the Maribyrnong River is just one of the westside locations taking part in the highly popular event, along with Yarraville’s Sun Theatre, The Substation and Australian Islamic Centre in Newport. In Footscray, doors will be flung open at Footscray Town Hall, the Bluestone Church Artspace, Victoria University Sports Science Facility and the Drill Hall – home of the Snuff Puppets and the Women’s Circus. Working Heritage executive officer Ross Turnbull said tours of Jack’s Magazine were all snapped up in the first 30 minutes of bookings opening, but anyone who missed out can join in a longer Sunday tour held once per month by booking at jacksmagazine.org.au. Jack’s Magazine was constructed in the 1870s to store gunpowder for use on the goldfields. It was later used to store materials for the ammunition factories that once dominated the area and became known as Jack’s Magazine after Wally Jack who served as depot foreman from World War 1 until 1943. It has been unused and inaccessible since the 1990s. Mr Turnbull said Working Heritage was appointed to manage Jack’s Magazine in 2015 and has been working on bringing life and creativity back to the iconic location. “We are about to run an expression of interest for artists and makers to take over some of our spaces, he said. Maribyrnong mayor Cameron McDonald said the council looks forward to opening up some of its architectural gems for the public to enjoy. Details: www.openhousemelbourne.org

Blues with a street vibe An eight-hour blues benefit gig to help the homeless will be held in Williamstown on Saturday, with all proceeds going to the Anonymous X homeless support charity. Greg Dodd & The Hoodoo Men will perform, alongside seven other bands, including Chris Finnen & The Melbourne Blues Disciples. Dodd started the Blues for Lost Souls music charity event in 2013. “I wanted to start an event that would help homeless people,” he said. “So, what I do every year is, get my friends to come on board and we all get together and our respective bands play … we raise money, and we also raise lots of donations as far as food and clothes and things like that. “This year, I’m asking for donations of tinned food for animals, as well, because a lot of homeless people have pets.” Since Dodd’s event started, his muso friends in East Gippsland and Bendigo have held sister events, with all proceeds donated to Anonymous X. “I suppose we always try to do better than last year,” Dodd said. “Last year we raised $36,100. “The charity I support, Anonymous X, needed a transit van to transport all their goods around because they were doing it in cars. “We spent $34,500 on a van, which now is delivering much-needed goods to those people on the street. “The money that’s raised, there’s no middle man – it goes straight to the charity Anonymous X … that money is used straight away and goes directly to people on the street.” Blues for Lost Souls will run from 3-11pm on August 6 at Williamstown RSL Club. Tickets $50. Information: facebook.com/ BluesForLostSouls/events

Water works at cemetery A 19th century water fountain at Williamstown Cemetery is to undergo a $450,000 restoration. The refurbishment of the fountain, built in 1892, has been jointly funded by Victoria’s Heritage Restoration Fund and the Greater Metropolitan Cemeteries Trust. Trust chief executive Jacqui Weatherill, said there had been several previous attempts at maintenance and multiple repairs of the fountain. “It is one of only three similar fountains erected in Victoria by the one manufacturer around the same period,,” she said. “Unfortunately, the Williamstown fountain is decaying.” Meg Jenkins of Friends of Williamstown Cemetery applauded the move. “The cemetery holds a unique position in the history of Williamstown and the hearts of generations of locals,” she said. HBS Group will this week start restoration works, which are expected to be completed early next year. Goya Dmytryshchak

‘L-plates’ for seniors Senior drivers are invited to attend the free Senior Drivers Expo at Hobsons Bay Civic Centre in Altona on Saturday August 20. The quarterly event is a RoadSafe Westgate Community Road Safety Council initiative and it’s open to retirees or those thinking about retirement.

Each participant gets a free, confidential once-over of their vehicle and advice from professionals such as VicRoads Roadworthy Officers on how to keep cars roadworthy.

The expo is aimed at giving seniors a free, confidential one-on-one session with one of three registered driving instructors.

“Each participant will receive tyre care advice from a VicRoads tyre expert and there’ll be the opportunity to ask highway patrol questions,” he said.

Jim Giddings, chairperson of RoadSafe Westgate, says organisers are committed to supporting older drivers and helping them stay behind the wheel for longer.

The free pack includes a reusable carry bag, a copy of the Senior Drivers Handbook and Driving in Victoria: Rules and Responsibilities.

“The Senior Driver Expo aims to give drivers current information on road safety, driving, prescribed medicines and road laws,” he said. “It’s an opportunity to get a free and confidential check on your driving technique to support you to drive away with confidence,” said Mr Giddings. “The sessions are designed to identify any ‘short cut’ habits drivers may have adopted over their years of driving.”

ALL FIRED UP I’ve mentioned before in this column that my husband’s favourite kitchen gadget is the appliance he calls the Starship Enterprise – our Breville portable pizza oven. But if you have the space and the budget, wood fired pizza ovens have become quite the backyard trend. Over August and September, Iramoo Community Centre at Wyndham Vale is holding classes on wood-fired oven cooking. If you’re considering installing one yourself, you can learn everything you need to know, using the centre’s very own wood-fired oven. Cost is just $5 and bookings are essential on 8742 3688.

LETTING OFF STEAM You know how it is. The spag bol sauce you had for dinner last night has splattered the walls of your microwave after you reheated it for lunch. Bad enough if you do it at home, but it’s 10 times worse if it happens when you’re at work using the office microwave!

Auction: July 30 at 11.30am

Sweeney Yarraville: 9687 8388 Price: $780,000 – $820,000 Auction: July 30 at 1pm

This circa 1890 Victoriana called Penrose is gorgeous kerbside, so the beautiful makeover inside will delight lovers of the contemporary-period mix. It has original and newer floorboards throughout, three original cast-iron fireplaces, a corbelled archway, deep skirts and high ceilings. A white-on-white palette bounces light, white plantation shutters dress all windows and custom-made cabinetry is top-notch. The upstairs main bedroom has a slick, dual-basin en suite, a walk-in wardrobe and adjoining fitted study. Three bedrooms downstairs have wardrobes and fireplaces (one is ideal as a sitting room). The large living hub at the rear includes an all-white kitchen, with abundant glossy cabinetry, a waterfall Caesarstone island bench and all mod cons. Two sets of bifolds open to a covered deck, lawn, a shed, and a hedge along back, all within a three-minute walk of the station.

On about 685 square metres, this classic triple-fronted brick veneer is beautifully spruced up inside, with polished floorboards in entry hall and spacious north-facing, L-shaped lounge-dining room with old-school gas heater. The kitchen at the back adjoins a tiled meals zone and links with the lounge room, which has charm and all mod-cons, including a dishwasher. Large carpeted bedrooms have built-in wardrobes and share a gleaming bathroom with original pink tub. A full-width Laserlite-covered pergola above brick paving looks out to a huge backyard with brick paving and a big lawn dotted with shrubs. A concrete drive heads through side gates to a large garage/workshop. Gas ducted heating and evaporative cooling, and an air-conditioner are other pluses, as is proximity to Highpoint, schools and transport.

WILLIAMSTOWN 83 Cole Street, 3016 Compton Green Williamstown: 9399 7606 Past the picket fence are steps to an elevated timber-decked verandah with gorgeously intricate fretwork overhead. It sits in a westerly-facing position, making this the perfect spot to enjoy your patch of residential royalty. Renovated in 2010, this double-fronted, free-standing 1910 Victorian dwelling’s pretty facade has instant street appeal and is a good harbinger to the period features and contemporary style that lie beyond. Inside, the neutral colour scheme showcases 3.7-metre ceilings with deep-moulded cornices and ornate rosettes. Polished Baltic floorboards add warmth and

texture throughout. Arched entryways, sash windows, original door handles and light switches, dado rails, timber-panelled walls and deep skirts are other period features. Three elegant bedrooms flank the main hall. They have plantation shutters and floor-to-ceiling built-in wardrobes. The main has a split-system and an en suite with a heated towel rack and twin vanity basins. Room two is kept cosy with an original cast-iron fireplace with timber surrounds and split-system. The family bathroom is all style. Tiled, it’s fitted with frameless glass shower with rainhead, wall-mounted floating vanity unit

and a deep freestanding bath with designer tapware. A large family-meals space opens up at the end of the hall. An extension has been well configured to exploit the block of about 267 square metres. A crisp white, waterfall Caesarstone island bench makes a statement in the kitchen. Glass splashback, bar fridge, double sink with hot water inset and a suite of Miele appliances (including a dishwasher and 900-millimetre) cooker complete the package. There is floor-to-ceiling shelving in the meals area and a fireplace is the focal point in the family space.

Timber-framed cafe doors slide back to reveal a deck which steps down to lawn out the back. A studio is the perfect value-add here. About 100 metres from Point Gellibrand and the beach at the end of the street, the property is within walking distance of Robertson Reserve – used for the farmer’s market – and the botanical gardens. The house has reverse-cycle air-conditioning, built-in surround sound, double-glazed windows throughout and a European laundry. The Minister for Planning has approved Amendment C110 to the Hobsons Bay Planning Scheme. The amendment came into operation on Thursday 21 July 2016, when a notice was published in the Government Gazette. The amendment implements the major recommendations of the 2011 Former Port Phillip Woollen Mill Advisory Committee in relation to open space requirements and the need for development contributions by introducing a new incorporated document titled ‘Former Port Phillip Woollen Mill Development Contributions Plan, April 2016’ into the planning scheme. This document requires that contributions be paid to the Council for supporting planned infrastructure projects and open space improvements as part of the subdivision of land in the Former Port Phillip Woollen Mill site.

49 MARIBYRNONG & HOBSONS BAY STAR WEEKLY \ JULY 27, 2016

SPORT One goal misery for the depleted Jets The scoreboard made for unpleasant reading for the Western Jets when they went down by 100 points to Murray Bushrangers in the TAC Cup at Wangaratta on Saturday. The result alone – the Jets kicked just one goal to the Bushies’ 15 from 33 scoring shots – does not tell the whole story. The Jets were severely depleted, while the Bushrangers were almost at full strength, so there was likely to be only one outcome. “Our private school boys were out,” Jets coach Torin Baker told Star Weekly. “We also lost a number of boys through the week to the Sun Shield semi-finals who were involved with St Pat’s, Essendon Keilor and MacKillop, so they were pretty physical games. “We were missing about 13 or 14 players who you would say were in your best 25, so we were

pretty short in terms of personnel and came up against a good team. “It was more about competing as much as we can, but that was a pretty tough job.” Such has been the tale of the season for the Jets. Injuries have piled up and absences have dented their chances in big games. With three games to go, the Jets remain a mathematical chance of reaching the finals, but they face familiar hurdles when they travel to play the ladder-leading Dandenong Stingrays on Saturday morning, with a number of key players unavailable. “It doesn’t get any easier,” Baker said. “It’s going to be another really strong challenge for us.” There is a silver lining to every dark cloud – the Jets had the chance on Saturday to blood

youngsters Zak Butters and Jack Noonan. And there have also been opportunities to see who could stand tall for the Jets in the face of adversity. On that front, Nick Stuhldreier, Brodie Romensky, Oscar Junker and Rhys Bradley, did their reputations no harm. Baker said that against the Bushies, Stuhldreier had played one of his best games for the club. “He’s a bottom-ager and we’ve had him down for 28 possessions off the half-back and he spent a little bit of time in the midfield,” he said. For the record, Tristan Xerri kicked the Jets’ only goal during the third quarter. Lance Jenkinson

IN THE DOGHOUSE ■ While

we all talk about participation and health being the number one reasons to get out and play sport, there’s no doubt we also hope to be winners. Junior finals have started and over the next few weeks some sporting dreams will be fulfilled and some will be put on hold. The wonderful thing about sport is there is often another chance … but not always. Doug Hawkins is a classic example. In his junior days at Braybrook he played in grand final after grand final and success seemed a formality. But he never played in another grand final after leaving Pennell Reserve. Nothing, in 350 games of senior AFL football. Yet teammates like Shane Ellen, who played just 65 games (11 at the Bulldogs, 54 at the Crows) landed in Adelaide in time to play in two premierships. Remember, a premiership is not a right, it’s a reward for a season’s work. Enjoy it but also enjoy every moment you can playing with your mates.

■ Altona’s

Jayden Post is one very lucky young man. What appeared to be a pretty standard footy injury – a corked thigh – escalated into a life-threatening situation when he bled internally. Fortunately, it had a happy ending but Jayden won’t be playing football again. Jayden came back to local footy after a few years at Richmond, where he played 30 senior games, as he was keen to have a kick with his mates. Thankfully for Jayden and his family, he has a lot left in life to look forward to.

■ Premiership

Body blow for Blues By Lance Jenkinson Williamstown stands defiant on the back of a body blow to its FFV men’s state league 3 promotion hopes. Blues coach Slobode Stojcevski is confident his side will once again reignite its push for a top-two finish after they were knocked down a peg following a costly 3-1 loss to Westvale at McKechnie Reserve on Saturday. It leaves the Blues in fourth spot, four points behind second-placed Westvale with six games to go. There is undoubtedly a mountain to climb now for the Blues to achieve promotion, but one thing Stojcevski will not question is the never-say-die attitude of his players. “We’re not out of it,” Stojcevski told Star Weekly Weekly. “We’ve got a team that believes in itself. “At the start of the season we were thinking how we were going to get a competitive team together with so many players leaving to other clubs from last year’s squad, but we’ve found 50 MARIBYRNONG & HOBSONS BAY STAR WEEKLY \ JULY 27, 2016

a really good mix of players who have faith in themselves. “It’s just a matter of getting out on the training track, getting that bit of confidence going and bouncing back. “It’s all about the next game.” The second 45 minutes of Williamstown’s loss to Westvale might go down as the turning point in their season. Despite scores being tied 1-1 at half-time, the Blues felt they had the better chances in the first half and were in control of the game. The concession of two second half penalties – the first of which Stojcevski felt was harsh and the second he agreed with – consigned Williamstown to a gut-wrenching defeat. “I didn’t think the first one was a penalty because it was a shoulder to shoulder challenge between my centre-back and their guy who went down, but the second one was a clear penalty, so no complaints there,” he said. “I don’t want to blame the referee for our failure to win that game because we missed some easy chances and paid the price late on for

missing those chances. If we had’ve done the job further up the field, we could’ve prevented that.” Alex Dimitrijevic was on target again for Williamstown. In a reformed role as a striker, the Blues captain has scored 12 goals to lead the golden boot by four over Robert Chelchowski (eight) of the Western Eagles. “Traditionally he’s played a holding midfield role, but I see him as much more of an attacking threat than a holding player,” Stojcevski said. “Leaving him loose further up the field, I think he’s enjoying it. “This is his record goals haul for a season and there’s still six games to go.” The freedom Dimitrijevic enjoys is partly due to the exceptional role of new recruit Cody Nagy in his former position. Nagy has been a revelation since moving to the Blues. Williamstown will host mid-table La Trobe University in a must-win game at Gray Reserve on Saturday.

reunions are enjoyable at any time but when you’re celebrating the 50th anniversary of one, that’s even more special. St Albans Football Club won its first FDL flag all those years ago, beating Kingsville. The Saints were wooden-spooners the previous year and when they defeated the more-fancied Kingsville by 31 points, the party started. The reunion is at noon on Sunday, August 7, with a buffet lunch costing $40. RSVP by July 29 to Lisa Psaila at the Sport Club 9367 5956 or admin@ stalbanssportsclub.com.au. The current Saints side is making a bold bid for the finals. They’re fifth on percentage but with only two games to go (Deer Park and Werribee Districts) plus the bye, their fate does not lie in their hands. Not only do they have to win, they need Spotswood to fall over as well. I think they might just miss out.

Gutsy win keeps Spotswood in the finals hunt Spotswood remains alive in the WRFL division 1 finals race after a gutsy three-point win over Wyndhamvale at the Wyndham Vale South Oval on Saturday. The Woodsmen travelled to the bottom-ofthe-ladder Falcons under no illusions of the task that lay ahead, having lost to the newly promoted side at home earlier in the season. It took the Woodsmen 120 minutes of tough, uncompromising football to eventually shake the Falcons in a low-scoring affair. Michael Knight was named best for Spotswood, while Elliott Wood and Grant Williams had strong outings. It was a great end to the week for Wood, who signed a two-year deal to remain with Spotswood. Only 12 goals were scored for the match, divided evenly by the two sides. The Woodsmen’s six goals for the day came courtesy of six individual goalkickers, while Falcons star Daniel Bunworth was the only multiple goalkicker on the ground with four.

Spotswood sits outside the top five on percentage, but has a game in hand over fifth placed St Albans, which still has a bye to come. The Woodsmen will host second-last Sunshine Kangaroos in a crucial game at McLean Reserve on Saturday. Altona was swamped early by three-time defending champions Deer Park in a 64-point loss at John McLeod Oval. The Vikings were held goal-less and staring at a 44-point deficit at half-time. Their only forward threat came through Elliot Cavallaro, who bagged three goals. Travis Lunardi and Kelly Pickard continued their impressive recent form for the Vikings. Altona kept hold of fourth spot despite the loss, ahead of a date with Wyndhamvale at Grant Reserve on Saturday. In division 2, North Footscray was too good for Glen Orden, winning by 57 points at Hansen Reserve. The Devils kicked away in a four-goal-to-zip third quarter.

Tyren Montebruno kicked seven goals for the Devils to take his season tally to 49. Montebruno is second on the goalkickers list behind Caroline Springs’ Mathew Sutton. The two premier forwards will face each other this Saturday when Caroline Springs host North Footscray in a top-three showdown. Yarraville-Seddon is still the front-runner of division 2 after easily accounting for West Footscray by 60 points at the Yarraville Oval. In division 3, Parkside suffered a shock two-point loss on home soil to the inform Wyndham Suns. It was a costly loss for the Magpies, who relinquished top spot to Newport Power in the process. The Power jumped up a rung on the ladder with a 63-point win over North Sunshine. In other games, Braybrook lost a close one to Sunshine Heights by 11 points, while Laverton suffered a 10-goal loss to Tarneit. Lance Jenkinson

Elliott Wood, a dual premiership player at Spotswood, has re-signed with the club for a further two years. (Luke Hemer)

Leigh Masters bobbed up to kick four goals in a best-on-ground display to lead Williamstown to a 33-point win over Port Melbourne in the VFL at North Port Oval on Saturday. Willie Wheeler and Ben Jolley were dominant in the midfield, while Anthony Anastasio was back to his best with two goals. The Seagulls head to Sandringham on Sunday sitting a game clear on top of the ladder. Footscray made an impressive last quarter fightback against the Northern Blues before the Blues got a second wind to claim victory by six points at Ikon Park on Sunday. Lukas Webb was outstanding for the Bulldogs and will stake his claim for a call-up to the AFL side, while Roarke Smith continues to impress. The Bulldogs will host Box Hill Hawks in a big clash at the Whitten Oval at midday on Saturday.

Hockey

Local star Rachel Jarry is looking forward to her second Olympics with the Australian Opals. (Scott Barbour/Getty Images)

Opal set to shine in Rio By Lance Jenkinson During the 2000 Sydney Olympics, a seven-year-old Rachel Jarry drew a picture of Australian basketball phenomenon Lauren Jackson with a goal scribbled out at the bottom that read along the lines of wanting to “be like Lauren” and represent the Australian Opals on the world’s biggest stage. Sixteen years later, Jarry is preparing to compete at her second Olympic Games, at the age of just 24. “To achieve the lifelong dream twice now is pretty amazing,” Jarry told Star Weekly. “This time I probably appreciate a bit more because of the sacrifices I had to make and hard work I had to do to get there. I feel like I’m a little bit prouder to have made my second one and obviously just looking forward to Rio and getting out there and getting the job done with the team.” Jarry is the kind of player you want on your side and not staring down from the opposite end of the court. Her game is built around defence and she has mastered it. What makes Jarry so valuable is her ability to

guard multiple positions from shooting guard to power forward. “My versatility is a huge part of my role in the team,” Jarry said. “My ability to play three different positions, I don’t think anyone else in our team will be doing that, so that’s a bonus for me. “Defence is a huge role of mine and something I’ve prided myself on in my Australian career. “I’ll also be looking to compliment some of the stars in our team when it’s my time to score.” Jarry has travelled the world to play basketball at elite levels, but she has not forgotten her roots. You can tell the pride in her voice when she starts talking about her upbringing in the western suburbs. She grew up in Spotswood and attended Wembley Primary School in Yarraville. While basketball came on the radar for Jarry around her primary school years, it was not the only sport catching her eye. “I love all sports and played a heap of different ones growing up,” she said. “I’ll watch AFL, cricket, whatever is on the TV, I’ll give it a watch.

“I’m hoping to get out and watch a few other sports at the Olympics as well.” The decision to start playing in the juniors with the Altona Gators at the age of nine is one that shaped her sporting destiny. She credits the Gators coaches for giving her the tools she needed to make a career out of the game. By the time she was in her teens at Williamstown High School, Jarry was showing huge potential. She would represent Australia at under-16, under-18 and under-20 levels, while also picking up a scholarship with the Australian Institute of Sport, which meant her VCE would be completed in Canberra. All roads pointed to the London 2012 Olympics for Jarry and she was part of an Opals team that went on to win a bronze medal. Jarry relished the Olympic dream first time around and believes it was a great learning curve for Rio. She has just signed a contract with Basket Lattes, a team in the French league based in Montpellier. She has played at the top level in Australia for WNBL clubs as well as professionally for the Minnesota Lynx in the WNBA in the United States, where her team won the title.

Footscray took the challenge right up to premiership contenders MCC in the Hockey Victoria women’s premier league at the Footscray Hockey Centre on Saturday. The Bulldogs came from behind to claim a 1-1 draw on the back of a Carly James goal in the second half. Altona had a 6-1 loss to Essendon, which leaves their fourth spot on the ladder vulnerable to a raid. In men’s premier league, Altona beat Essendon 2-0 to move further clear of the relegation zone.

Lacrosse

Newport survived a nail-biter to beat Footscray 8-6 in the Lacrosse Victoria women’s state league. Marlee Paton was inspirational for the Porters with four goals and Whitney Jennings had two assists. For the Scray, Sarah Smith and Georgia Latch posted doubles. In men’s state league, Williamstown, Surrey Park and Footscray all have 10 wins and have broken four games clear of the rest of the competition. Ladder leader Williamstown had a 14-6 win over MCC, while third-placed Footscray beat Malvern 14-8. MOTOR Superb wagon, under-rated gem Skoda’s flagship family wagon is a clever, spacious, well-mannered alternative for suburban SUVs, writes Andrew MacLean 2016 SKODA SUPERB 206TSI WAGON

Why are we driving it? Skoda has recently launched its all-new second-generation Superb range and we’re moving our way through the six different variants – three sedans and three wagons. This is the range-topping station wagon with the most powerful version of the 2.0-litre turbo four-cylinder engine and all-wheel drive transmission.

On sale:

Now

Price:

$52,690 (plus on-road costs)

Engine:

2.0-litre four cylinder turbo petrol

Power:

206kW at 6500rpm

Torque:

350Nm at 1700-5600rpm

Transmission: 6-spd dual-clutch automatic, all-wheel drive

What we like First of all, the sheer amount of interior space offered by the Superb is almost unmatched for the price. It’s enough to question why anyone would need a modern soft-roader for suburban duties. While there’s plenty of room up front, there’s acres in the back seat for growing families and the boot is bigger than you’ll ever need to cart the weekly shopping or sport gear. Beyond that, there’s a bunch of clever storage features – rubbish bins in the door pockets, umbrellas in the sills and myriad solutions in the boot to keep things secure – as well as top-quality materials, funky green ambient lighting at night, Apple CarPlay connectivity and comfortable seats. The Superb drives really well, with good compliance over bumps, positive steering, solid brakes and the traction of all-wheel drive in slippery conditions. The engine has plenty of punch when tapping into its top-end, but cruises along nicely, too, thanks to low-down urgency from its turbo charger.

Fuel Use:

As for the car itself, there’s very few gripes. But it’s debatable whether the flagship is worth the extra $10,000 over the base model Superb, which is just as spacious and drives just as well, even without all-wheel drive and with a less-powerful, 162kW motor.

(Supplied)

It’s all backed-up with the latest in electronic driver aids, including automated emergency braking, as well as nine airbags. What we dislike The biggest problem afflicting Skoda remains acceptance of the brand in Australia. While the $52,000-odd ask for the flagship wagon makes it a great buy, it doesn’t hold its value

7.3L/100km

Would we buy it? Yes. The Superb is a very under-rated car that offers a genuinely clever, well-mannered and value-packed alternative to SUVs. It looks smart on the outside, is spacious on the inside and drives beautifully on the road. Just don’t expect it to be an easy sell when it comes time to trade up to something else in a few years time.

as well as other European brands. Industry forecasts suggests the Superb will retain just 40 per cent of its value over the first three years of ownership, so take that into account during the purchasing decision. The recent Volkswagen Dieselgate scandal has also taken some wind out of Skoda, even though this latest Superb is not part of the emission-cheating recall.
