SERIOUS injuries from road accidents jumped 50 per cent in City of Greater Geelong during the past two years, according to new Transport Accident Commission statistics. Injuries involving an acute hospital stay of more than 14 days increased from 26 in 2011 and 28 in 2012 to 39 in 2013. Surf Coast recorded a steep decrease in serious injuries, with three reported in 2013 after a high of 12 in 2011, down 75 per cent. TAC chief Janet Dore said she was concerned that hospitalisations for

more than 14 days had been increasing in Greater Geelong over the past three years even though overall injuries were down. “Many people view the road toll as the measure of road trauma but we must also consider the thousands of Victorians who are seriously injured on the roads each year,” Ms Dore said. “Last year Geelong’s road toll fell quite significantly but, unfortunately, we still find ourselves in a situation where dozens of lives have been seriously affected by injuries resulting from road accidents.” Ms Dore said reducing serious in-

juries was a key goal of State Government’s road safety strategy. “Our vision is for every Victorian’s journey to be a safe one.” Geelong remained on par for fatalities, with 11 for each of the past two years to November, in line with its five year average of 11. The TAC hopes a new campaign calling on young regional Victorians to put safety first when shopping for first cars will help reduce injuries. The How Safe is Your Car campaign is aimed at summer holidays when young Victorians scan used car markets for their first vehicles before

starting studies or jobs. Victorian assistant treasurer Gordon Rich-Phillips said road trauma could be reduced if young drivers chose cars with four or five-star safety ratings. “Vehicle safety has come a long way in recent years and people need to be aware that many modern safety features can be found in affordable second-hand cars,” Mr Rich-Phillips said. A 41-YEAR-old man stabbed and bashed at North Geelong last weekend is facing assault charges over a previous alleged incident. Jason Trickey, recovering in Geelong Hospital from the brutal attack, is listed for a contest mention in Geelong Magistrates’ Court on 18 February. A court spokesman told the Independent the charges related to assault. The matter was adjourned after a previous mention mid-January, the spokesman said. Mr Trickey this week posted on Facebook photographs from his hospital bed, wearing a neck-

brace and saying “Gotta learn to walk before you run ... ”. He did not respond to phone messages from the Independent. The Independent believes police are investigating an 18-yearold Geelong man’s Facebook posting of threats against Mr Trickey and bragging about assaulting him. Mr Trickey also posted Facebook images of facial bruises sustained late last year after an undisclosed incident. In the latest incident, six or seven youths reportedly assaulted him after breaking into his Thompson Rd home.

Redevelopment plans line up for city centre By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN AND PAUL MILLAR CITY Hall is considering 28 planning permit applications for central Geelong, councillor Michelle Heagney has revealed. The increase number of applications coincides with council this week unanimously approving a 15-year blueprint to revive the city centre. The central Geelong action plan aims to increase the city centre’s population from 4200 to 10,000. “The most significant current application relates to the redevelopment

of the National Hotel at the corner of Moorabool and Little Ryrie streets,� said Cr Heagney, who holds council’s central Geelong portfolio. “We are also having pre-application meetings with developers relating to other potential developments within the central Geelong precinct.� Cr Heagney said the introduction of an Activity Centre Zone in May this year had opened up potential for significant redevelopments of central Geelong and its “Western Wedge� precinct. “The introduction of the Activity Centre Zone has reduced restrictions

on heights of buildings in strategic locations. The effect of the zone has been to remove the previous four and six-storey height limits. “In pockets of central Geelong and the Western Wedge there is now no prescribed height limit, provided other criteria are met there is no limit to building height. “The Activity Centre Zone is designed to foster appropriate development, including residential apartments in Central Geelong and the Western Wedge,� she said. Mayor Darryn Lyons planned to present the central Geelong action

plan to Premier Denis Napthine during state coalition election strategy meetings in the city this week. The plan aims to attract investment, create employment opportunities and encourage more people to make the heart of the town their home. Initiatives include reducing ground-floor property vacancy rates to five per cent, increasing the number of people working in central Geelong from 21,000 to 30,000, lifting its student population from 4500 to 10,000 and converting 25 per cent of lowgrade office building space to high grade or residential use.

Siblings celebrate kidney milestone with donors call By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN BARRY Freeman has carried a kidneyshaped piece of sister Judy Mathe with him for the past 25 years. The pair celebrated the 25th anniversary of the transplant recently, hoping to encourage others to register for organ and tissue donation during DonateLife Week. “It was a big deal for us then,� Judy reflected. “Back then medical procedures weren’t so advanced but it’s like putting a Band-Aid on these days.� Barry was diagnosed with juvenile diabetes at the age of 12 but lived a full and active life until his kidney suddenly failed at 40. “The diabetes diagnosis was a bolt out of the blue because there was no family history of it,� Judy said. “Barry had his own earthmoving business but it all came to a halt when his kidney shut down, so I did a lot of preliminary testing to make sure we were compatible before I told him I was going to donate my kidney. “He asked me whether I was sure, I told him he would do it for me and that’s really the only consideration we took.� The surgery, at Prince Henry’s Hospital, was uncomplicated and Barry made a complete recovery, although he still suffers some effects of the diabetes. “It means I’m still here walking around,� Barry said. “It frightened the hell out of me when she suggested it but it has made such a difference to me. “It was like turning a light switch on. I was feeling crook before and when I came out of it I felt that much better, almost instantly. “What she did for me was fantastic. I owe her for the rest of my life.� Judy said she hoped the story would encourage young people to be organ donors and to discuss their wishes with their family. Prosecutor appointed GEELONG will have its own permanent Crown prosecutor to take on the lawyers of alleged lawbreakers, the Office of Public Prosecutions has announced. A spokesperson said the appointment of barrister Justin Lewis, pictured, from mid-year, would replace an existing system of Melbournebased prosecutors rotated through Geelong annually.

Weather puts heat on beer, ice vendors LOCAL residents took a breather from the sweltering conditions this week but will need a second wind to survive the weekend, with the mercury set to bubble over 40C again on Sunday. It will be time to head for the shade and stay close to the refrigerator, which will be a bonus for Victorian brewers. Statistics show that beer sales vary about two per cent for every 1C

change in temperature. Jenny Christie, from Mr Cool Ice, said her company was flat-out meeting demand during the recent hot spell. “It was unbelievable but we just managed to keep up with it,” she said. “We were doing about 20 tonnes a day or more, for four day.” The family business usually sells about six tonnes of ice. Geelong Weather Services’ Lindsay Smail expected 42C on the last

day of January, which he said was not unusual for the month in Victoria. Geelong’s long-term overall average maximum temperature for January was 25.1C but this year it was closer to 28C, he said. However, in January 1908 the long-term average high was 31.5C and 1961’s average maximum was 29.1C. “We’re looking at the top end of the scale but it’s not unusual for this time of the year,” Mr Smail said.

Boy robbed at bus stop POLICE are hunting a man who allegedly robbed a boy of his BMX bike at a Geelong bus stop days before Christmas. Police alleged the man pushed the teenager off his bike before fleeing down Ryrie St with the bike around 9.15pm on 20 December. Police described the man as Caucasian, about 25 years old with a slim build and short brown hair. He was wearing a brown T-shirt and brown cargo pants with side pockets at the time of the alleged robbery. Victoria Police released on Wednesday an image of a man they want to question over the incident. Police said the GT BMX bike had brown handle bars, a blue frame and a gold and black-chequered seat. Pacific Africa operations off record sales of 1.34 million vehicles Ford will pay record profit-sharing cheques averaging $8800 to workers in North America and hire additional staff. The strong Asian Pacific results contrasted what the company described as “unfavourable results in Australia as Ford restructures the

business and reflects the effects of a weakening Australian dollar”. Ford’s overall operations posted a record pre-tax profit of $8.6 billion. Ford president and chief executive officer Alan Mulally said the company had an “outstanding year in 2013” with “solid results and profitable growth for all”.

“We are well-positioned for another solid year in 2014,” he said. Earlier this month Ford unveiled a new all-aluminium F-150, the world’s top-selling truck, at the Detroit Auto Show, highlighting a ground-breaking deal to make aluminium cars in the US with Alcoa, which is also at risk of closing in Geelong.

A PROPOSED time limit on Torquay beach car parks has received a mixed response from surfers, businesses and council. The Independent revealed last week that Great Ocean Road Coast Committee (GORCC) had mooted time limits on car parks, parking attendants and a park-and-ride system as solutions to the Surf Coast’s annual beach parking congestion. The committee suggested the options in a report on coastal transport and is seeking community feedback. Torquay Commerce and Tourism

president Barrie Sutherland said parking restrictions would be an unnecessary “disaster”. “Let the market forces take care of it. It is bureaucracy gone mad,” Mr Sutherland said. “People in Torquay enjoy the benefits of visitors and I’m sure we can live with a few inconveniences.” Torquay Boardriders president Dave Mathews said the club opposed beach parking restrictions. “I understand residents may be concerned that streets get clogged with beachgoers and you can find it frustrating to get a park sometimes. “I can understand GORCC want to

He delivered a pre-election pep talk to his parliamentary team in Geelong this week in preparation for November’s state election. Dr Napthine met community and business leaders including Cr Lyons during the visit, saying he was prepared to listen to proposals. Funding for the pier, city centre revitalisation, a convention centre, further redevelopment of Kardinia Park and other projects had already been raised, he said. “We need a clear, unequivocal view from the mayor and the Geelong community about where their priorities lie. “We have a good track record for supporting Geelong in a

number of projects … we have to see is what is the best value for money.” Cr Lyons said he would deliver a prioritised wish list. “I’ll be giving him the grand plan but I also realise that it won’t all be done at once.” Cr Lyons believed the government should take the past into account when looking to Geelong’s future. “The former premier, Jeff Kennett, delivered a $30 million investment in the Geelong waterfront ... it needs to be done again,” Cr Lyons said. “The Yarra St pier is a priority but it has to be more than that to attract private investment.”

ATMs out, losses rise ATM ban but could be attributed to a lower number of machines in operation at the time. “The Government allowed EFTPOS machines in venues and it hasn’t changed the interaction. “After the poker machine licence auction there were a number of machines not in circulation but they’re coming back online now, so we’re seeing an increase in spend. “This (ATM ban) has not solved the issue of problem gambling. The Government has fiddled around the edges. It is not unexpected that the figures would climb.� Cr Farrell said poker machine losses were still a major issue in Geelong, particularly in under-resourced areas. “The council is working as much as it can around planning uses but the bulk of the decision-making lies with State Government.� Anti-pokies crusader Paul Bendat said a new campaign would seek to introduce a commitment to a $1 bet limit, ensuring gamblers could lose a maximum of $120 an hour. “The 1-120 initiative was recognised by the productivity commission as workable to reduce problem gambling without affecting recreational gamblers,� Mr Bendat said.

Hot stuff when rods shining at Queenscliff By MICHELLE HERBISON MORE than 1200 cars from around Australia will descend on Queenscliff this Sunday for an annual Geelong Street Rodders show-and-shine event. Club member and 1956 Chevrolet owner Gary James said Princess Park would host an impressive array of hot rods and classic cars on view for the general public from 10am. “Hot Rods are classified as pre-1948

and then post-’48 to ’67 are custom classics and later model cars are special interest vehicles like Corvettes and Mustangs,� Mr James said. “The oldest would be 1923 and they go up into the early ’80s. There’s a mixture of everything.� All funds raised through the event’s $5 entry fee would be divided between selected charities, with the event expected to raise an amount similar to last year’s $30,000.

The Queenscliff Rod Run event was the year’s main event for Geelong Street Rodders’ 90-plus members, Mr James said. “Come along and enjoy it and take in the spectacular cars of all different colours. There’ll be a lot of bling, a lot of chrome. “Some wives say the cars are looked after better than them.� Geelong Street Rodders began in 1973 as an enthusiasts’ club for owners of American-origin vehicles.

GEELONG pokie players lost an extra $100,000 despite the removal of ATMs from local gaming venues, according to Victorian Commission for Gambling and Liquor Regulation figures. Geelong gamblers lost $46.8 million between July and November 2012 but their losses climbed to $46.9 million between July and November 2013. The ATM ban came into effect in July 2012 but cash withdrawals were available by EFTPOS, capped at $200 but without a limit on the number of withdrawals. State Government had hailed the ATM ban as an “outstanding success� that led to problem gamblers “significantly reducing their spending on gaming machines�. Minister for Liquor and Gaming Regulation Edward O’Donohue said the removal of ATMs from Victorian gaming venues was highly effective in reducing risky gambling behaviour. But councillor Jan Farrell, who holds a community safety porfolio on Geelong’s council, “categorically rejected� Mr O’Donohue’s claim. Water board in new cuts order By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN STATE Government has asked Barwon Water to become more efficient despite already cutting costs by up to 11 per cent after an efficiency review. Water Minister Peter Walsh said the Government was launching a “major reform to lower household water bills”. The Government’s Fairer Water Bills campaign would deliver “efficiencies and system-wide cost reductions”, he said. The campaign would require water corporations to review financial and asset management, procurement practices and shared services to find savings for customers. “A typical Melbourne household using 165 kilolitres of water per year has seen bills go from around $500 to around $1200 per year because of decisions like the north-south pipeline and the Wonthaggi desalination plant,” Mr Walsh said.

“I believe there is scope for significant productivity and efficiency gains in the urban water sector that will translate to future savings on household water bills.” Mr Walsh said the Government had asked regional and metropolitan urban water corporations to identify and provide advice on efficiency gains. The feedback would be subjected to an independent review for the Government to establish efficiency goals for each corporation. Mr Walsh said a review would reduce regulatory burden and red tape for water corporations. Barwon Water’s new efficiency targets will take effect from 1 July. Chairman Michael King said Barwon Water initiated the earlier efficiency and productivity review in December 2011. “The purpose was to identify corporate and operational savings that would keep down future

prices for residential and business customers. “The review has led to annual savings of between 10 and 11 per cent. “These savings have allowed Barwon Water’s Board to deliver price cuts of 1.6 per cent, excluding CPI, every year for five years, from 2013 to 2018. “The savings have been achieved by reducing operational costs, implementing process improvements and changes to service delivery, with no impact on customer service levels. “In addition, there have been several management restructures and a number of employees have taken up the offer of voluntary redundancy. “While there have already been significant gains in efficiency and productivity, Barwon Water’s board will continue to investigate cost savings that put downward pressure on household water bills.”

Lights camera ‘a fines leader’

A CONTROVERSIAL red light camera at the intersection of The Boulevard and Melbourne Rd, Norlane, is a state hotspot for infringements, according to Justice Department comparisons. The intersection has the fourth highest number of red light infringements in the state. A comparison of the 20 top busiest red light cameras lists the site as recording 1093 infringements. The intersection of Flinders and William streets, Melbourne, recorded the highest number of infringements with 2141. All other top 20 busiest red light cameras were also in Melbourne. The Norlane intersection was upgraded a year ago after the construction of a Bunnings store nearby. The high number of infringements has prompted motorists to write to the Independent complaining the turn arrow allows insufficient time to cross the fourlane intersection. They have called on VicRoads to check the timing and say they now avoided the intersection. The Independent revealed in December that the camera was

MOTORISTS on the Princes Freeway between Lara and Little River are more likely to be fined for speeding than drivers anywhere else in the state, according to new figures. The speed camera statistics reveal that more than 7000 motorists were clocked speeding on the section over a threemonth period. A camera on the Point Wilson bridge at Little River recorded 2497 offences on the

three Melbourne-bound lanes. Avalon bridge cameras, at Lara, snapped 2399 Melbourne-bound speedsters and a further 2352 headed to Geelong. A camera at Point Cook snapped 4089 drivers speeding on the way toward Geelong. All four cameras were in the state’s top 10, with the Melbourne lanes of the Princes Fwy at Point Cook catching 4986 speeding motorists between July and September.

Letters Limits dog of an idea TO FREE up spaces in coastal parking, I do not believe it is a good idea to put time limits on spaces (Independent, 24 January). If this happens the restrictions will have to be enforced to ensure the time limits are effective. We already have dogs-on-beaches regulations at Torquay. Many people walk their dogs on the beach after work and carry leashes while the dogs run free without anyone checking up on this breaking of council bylaws. Who would pay for people to police time limit regulations? Would our rates have to be increased? Meters should not be an option. People should not have to pay to enjoy what God provides for free. Enough space already exists for people to stay freely for as long as they want. If there is no room, they can park further afield and walk. When it is busy, some people already park in the supermarket car park for two hours to enjoy the beach. Anne Box Torquay

Choose health over jobs SURF Coast residents and visitors have a choice to make: they can do nothing and stay part of a divided community poisoned each day by Alcoa’s coal operations on the edge of Anglesea or they can work together to enhance what attracted them to the area in the first place. Some argue that Alcoa was here first and has created lots of jobs for the region. But the negative health concerns of mining and burning coal have recently come to light in peer-reviewed medical and scientific peer-reviewed studies. These concerns centre around the emission of sulphur dioxide plus fine particles over the district from the power plant’s smoke stack. Do we really want to encourage jobs for some locals that impact on the health of others? I hope not. It appears Alcoa will close its operations at Point Henry. It will be interesting to see how much it contributes to the considerable costs of cleaning up the site. History suggests it will be little, if anything.

Cowboys raid the bush DEPARTMENT of Environment and Primary Industry (DEPI) recently began preparing for a planned bushfire in the Anglesea Heath National Estate and adjacent to the Anglesea River. As part of the preparations, DEPI used a logloader - a heavy track excavator with a large claw attached to the arm - to drive through a small tributary to the Anglesea River then crash through several hundred metres of healthy woodland including a steep area undergoing revegetation. The path taken was behind heavy steel ropes supported by numerous large concrete posts with plaques attached stating: ‘Revegetation Area - Keep Off’. The log-loader, the size of a bulldozer, did considerable damage, all for the purposes of pushing over one medium-sized tree fire damaged by a previous planned bushfire. The new planned bushfire will cause still further damage. The tree is unlikely to have fallen across the track and could have been chainsawed, causing less damage than a log-loader. The community spends hundreds of hours of voluntary work removing weeds and then replanting the area only to have the work destroyed by new DEPI planned bushfires, which are not based on sound science and do not protect the community. Additionally, the area is home to echidnas, which move slowly, tending to push under low vegetation when disturbed and which will be killed by the planned bushfire. The Victorian Government needs to urgently review its obsession with planned bushfires and either halt the program completely or at least reign the DEPI cowboys. Stephen Chenery Winchelsea

Barker’s new tunes at festival unnamed album, to be released midyear. “We’ve decided to let the songs dictate what sort of record it’s going to be. Basically we just go ‘round to the drummer’s spare room, run through the songs two or three times - hardly any prep - then just go straight in (to record),” Barker explained. “It sounds really pure to me - they don’t sound like they’ve been overwritten.” After some recent work took a mellow, country-rock direction aiming to gain greater mass appeal, Barker was proud of his new carefree style, inspired by his music-making maxim, “What would Neil do?”. “I could imagine Neil Young and Crazy Horse making records in a ragged way. “I just love the way he never steers a

MERCEDES-BENZ has added yet enough model to its AMG hotrod range. The hot version of the CLA-Class is the 45 AMG model. The CLA 45 AMG is a great looking machine with a neatly integrated body kit to enhance its high-performance credentials. Though every external panel of the CLA 45 coupe is different from those on the A 45 hatch, the two vehicles share pretty much the same overall style. Our road test car had black trim that was highlighted by raised red stitching which looked just right for a car like this. As the CLA is a coupe the back seat has limited headroom; somehow this doesn’t matter as much in the AMG sports model as it does in the standard cars. The boot is a large and easy to load. The AMG engineers have squeezed 265 kilowatts of power from a 2.0-litre four-cylinder high-pressure turbopetrol engine. That’s an amazing 355 horsepower in muscle cars terms, and the CLA 45 AMG is most definitely a compact muscle car. In normal driving all the power goes only through the front wheels, the rear wheels are brought into action within a tenth of a second when the computer senses the front tyres are suffering from engine overload. Driven correctly any high-performance car is safer than the standard model on which it’s based. That’s due to its improved chassis and braking dynamics, as well as its ability to accelerate out of trouble if that’s the correct way of doing it. Avoiding crashes and/or minimising their dangers is carried out by everything from driver drowsiness warnings to radar detection of potential crashes. There’s automatic lane keeping and blind spot warning systems. A complete range of occupant

IndySport Cats chase early Blues wickets GEELONG Cricket Club finds itself in a precarious position going into day two of its match against Carlton on Saturday. The Cats rode a rollercoaster last week, starting brightly after being sent in by Carlton at the Geelong cricket ground. All of the four Geelong batsmen at the top order made scores in the teens but, with regular wickets falling, at 9/72 the game was almost lost half way through day one. A gutsy last wicket stand of 69 by bowlers Marc Carson (20) and Jake Reed (47) helped the team through to a respectable 141. The pair then continued their form into their bowling, claiming two early wickets each to see the visitors scrabbling at 4/23. An 89-run stand then followed but, with two late wickets to Reed (4/23), the Blues finished the day on 6/117. of winning and remaining in the upper reaches of the ladder. In Geelong Cricket Association, it looks like the cream is rising to the top, with the top six nearly settled after Geelong West pulled off an amazing outright result against top-placed North Geelong. That means a 10-point gap opens up between the top six and seventh-placed Newtown & Chilwell. With West taking on Lara this game, a win there will almost kill off the challenger. Meanwhile, the match of the round looks like being between the top two sides, North Geelong and St Joseph’s.

Both have showed some indifferent form of late but there is no doubt the influx of quality players into both camps this season means this game will be of a high standard. The fact that North Geelong probably relies on fewer players to get the bulk of the scoring done means that Joeys will go in slightly favoured to win. Selections: ST JOSEPH’S v North Geelong, GEELONG WEST v Lara, Murgheboluc v HIGHTON, Geelong City v NEWTOWN & CHILWELL, Leopold v GROVEDALE, EAST BELMONT v South Barwon. In division two, top-placed Bell Post Hill takes on St Albans Breakwater in a game that many might predict to be a grand final preview. Both sides are in good form, particularly the Panthers who haven’t lost since round four thanks to a strong bowling line-up and some good batsmen in form. The Saints, on the other hand, have been up and down, amazingly having two outright wins and three

losses from their past six games. It might depend on which St Albans Breakwater team turns up here but you would have to think Bell Post Hill is too solid to let this one slip. Other selections: Alexander Thomson v WAURN PONDS, Guild St Mary’s v MARSHALL, MANIFOLD HEIGHTS v Newcomb & District, MODEWARRE v St Peter’s, Torquay v Thomson. In division three, Teesdale looks to have top spot sewn up but this week’s opponent, Winchelsea, will have to be at its best to hold its spot in the top six. The Blues are fifth but, with sixth-placed Corio playing North Shore and seventh-placed Little River guaranteed six points with the bye, a loss here would be disastrous. Teesdale had the bye last round, meaning it will be nicely freshened for this one and should be too good. Other selections: Lethbridge v MEREDITH, CORIO v North Shore, BELL PARK v Shelford, INVERLEIGH v Bannockburn, Little River bye.

Whiting biting as long weekend brings out a flotilla On the

FANTASTIC conditions over the long weekend attracted massive numbers of boats onto the water, with a many reports of captures as a consequence. Many anglers chased the whiting, with Queenscliff to St Leonards hosting the best action for many weeks. Terry McMahon easily caught his bag limit on pippies at the entrance to Swan Bay on first light. Guy Stevens also fished Swan Bay for a bag-limit catch in only 90 minutes. A shift out to deeper water soon produced a nice bag of flathead as well. Troy Martin and James Miller drifted the edge of the Coles Channel where they caught flathead as well as over a dozen whiting and three snapper around 1.5kg. Salmon kept anglers busy around The Rip area. Many shoals were holding deep, requiring the use of a downrigger, which soon had the O’Toole brothers constantly hooking up on salmon to better than 1.5kg. Kingfish reports had been limited until Tony Fitzgerald and Stan Toll fished wide of the Portsea Hole last weekend, catching five fish but only keeping the largest, a 4.2kg specimen. Slow trolling with white Slug Go lures was the successful method. Squid remained viable as long as they were targeted at first light. Grassy Point and Point George were consistent but the shallows of Hermsley were probably the best, with small natural-coloured jigs catching plenty of squid. Graham Shorten drifted the spoil grounds off Leopold with soft plastics, catching a variety of species featuring snapper, flathead and pike. Graham’s largest snapper was 3.1kg and his longest pike over one metre, with Gulp turtleback worms in the Pumpkin Green pattern working best. Salmon continued moving throughout Corio Bay,

However, they were found consistently around Alcoa Pier at first light and close in at Bird Rock in the evenings, with soft plastics taking the most fish. Jake McManus trolled deep-diving lures off Bird

Rock where he was into some big pike. Slow trolling the shallow grass beds of the bay at this time of the year will always produce quality pike. Colin Carter caught over a dozen pike in three sessions while fishing land-based from the rocks at

North Shore. Colin used small metal baitfish lures to land fish up to 85cm along with three salmon that he estimated at just over 1kg. Paul Jeffries cast soft plastics from his kayak to catch pike, salmon, snapper and flathead around the boat moorings between Eastern Beach and Royal Geelong Yacht Club. Late in the evening around high tide was best. Surf anglers caught plenty of salmon from the rock platforms just past Lorne, especially when using lures around high tide. Nathan Priest fished the Barwon River near Queen’s Park where he found plenty of small redfin. Soft plastics worked better than hard-bodied lures, especially when worked extremely slowly. The area between Fyans Park to Ceres has been the most productive local stretch of the river for redfin, with late afternoons the best time to fish. Michael Evans continued putting in plenty of time at Wurdee Boluc Reservoir, which understandably rewarded his with the best results. Big redfin have been caught at the reservoir early morning or late in the evening, with smaller specimens biting during the day. Lake Toolondo again produced the best trout fishing in the state. All methods worked but drifting mudeye out under a float was best in bright conditions, with anglers landing fish better than 2kg. Many local anglers travelled far and wide over the long weekend, including Geelong fly expert John Mole who went all the way to the wilds of Tasmania. He did it rough but managed some outstanding fishing, with his best rainbow trout estimated at over 5kg. Tackleworld staff member Chris Pitman fished the estuary at Nelson where he caught bream and mulloway on a mix of vibe and bibbed lures. This weekend’s tides should be ideal for salmon from the surf between Lorne to Wye River. The two hours either side of high tide should be best.
