“Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.” – Nelson Mandela

It’s an exciting time at Stark State College, a time filled with meaningful growth, excellent resources and exciting opportunities for our students and prospective students to prepare themselves with a quality education leading to a rewarding career. We’re grateful for donors like you who have provided support through Stark State College Foundation to allow our students access to the education they need to succeed. This fiscal year, your support has truly changed lives and built futures. For instance, we’ve been able to implement an emergency fund for students at risk of dropping out due to an unexpected expense as well as establish a number of new scholarships and grow current ones. Thanks to your generosity, we’ve touched many lives, and we hope you’ll review this annual report to learn more about the myriad, impactful ways your gift has supported our students and their successes. Sincerely, Patricia Wackerly President Stark State College Foundation

GENEROUS DONORS providing support for our students

Numbers at work Emergency Dash Grant Many of our students find themselves just one bill away from having to drop out of school … and then that bill arrives. Stark State College Foundation was awarded a grant to help students at risk of dropping out due to a qualifying emergency bill or expense of up to $500 (paid directly to the vendor). The Foundation was asked to raise $26,000 to receive more than triple that amount to support our students in need.

During a pilot program this past spring, we awarded emergency funds to 32 students.

As winter set in, Stark State education major Beth Carpenter needed new tires to keep her on the road for her 35-mile daily commute to Stark State. “I’m thankful the DASH grant was there,” she said.

Automotive Technology Scholarships Stark State’s automotive technology program continues to see high growth and proves to be a degree that remains in demand by the industry. This program has solid support from many funders through the Foundation. Ralphelle Smith is a perfect example of one life touched by a scholarship and the impact the gift has on his entire family: A devoted husband and father of three who worked various jobs to keep his family afloat, Ralphelle found his hands-on knack for fixing cars could be turned into a career with an automotive technology degree from Stark State College. Today, Ralphelle has completed several certificates through the College and has plans to graduate within the next year. The program has helped him land a good-paying job in the industry that has lightened his load and strengthened his family’s future. “Every scholarship dollar I received has assisted me with my education and my future goals,” said the Bridgestone-Firestone Automotive Scholarship recipient.

College Credit Plus to Stark State College Stark State offers College Credit Plus (CCP) to many area high school students, giving them the opportunity to take college classes at no cost while in high school.

This fiscal year brought with it a large donation by the Timken Foundation of Canton.

In 2015-16, more than 3,500 of students participated in the program. For those who decide to continue their Stark State education after high school graduation, scholarships are available. Bailey Doerfler is one of those students. The Mogadore High School CCP student decided to study computer graphic arts-digital photography at Stark State when she graduated. Bailey received the GAR Foundation College Credit Plus Scholarship, and thanks to this support, has been able to pay for each semester without loans.

“ I wish all graduating seniors knew the economic advantage of completing your first two years of college here at Stark State. ”

A portion of this generous contribution was earmarked for the development of the W.R. Timken Advanced Manufacturing Laboratory in our Advanced Technology Center. The new lab features • 22 pieces of equipment including CNC machines, lathe, mill, and3D printers in its additive manufacturing laboratory and • an upgrade to The Timken Center included 316 computers, monitors and other equipment.

Ruth Hess Williams Scholarship – Health Science Scholarship Stark State’s health and human services programs continue to produce top-notch graduates and professionals in the field. Scholarship opportunities are always helpful for these students, who are often juggling work, clinicals, family and school. One scholarship recipient, studying emergency fire services and nursing, shared during this year’s Scholars and Benefactors Luncheon what the dollars and support meant to him:

I chose Stark State because, frankly, I wanted to learn from the “ best in my field and I haven’t been disappointed,” Michael Felcyn

said. “The Ruth Hess-Williams Health Sciences Scholarship provided by the Gessner Family Foundation further aids me in my endeavor by easing the burden on my family and in a way makes you partners in the service I strive to provide. Thank you!

Dear Donors,

Thank you. There is nothing more lasting or meaningful than the gift of education, and you have granted that gift to so many through your generosity. As president of Stark State College, I have the privilege of interacting with students in and out of the classroom. I have the pleasure of hearing their stories firsthand and learning of the impact your contributions make on their lives and on the lives of their families. The gift of education tends to have a very positive ripple effect on the family and support circle of a student. Sometimes it starts with a child attending college, which encourages a parent to go back. Other times, it begins with a parent attending college, which makes it seem possible for the child. Regardless of age, most students have families that will benefit from the employability a college degree or certification brings. Sincerely, thank you. The gift of education you are providing is making an impact on the lives of many, and you should be acknowledged and commended for your role in helping the Stark State College Foundation change lives and build futures.
