Foreword
EMPOWERMENT THROUGH EXCHANGE Project-Video-Trailer:
In recent years we look with unease upon the situation of people in war-torn regions. The Federal Republic of Germany has been playing a big role in the support and intake of refugees. In 2017, roughly 198.000 applications for asylum were issued in Germany - two years previously, with 890.000 seeking safety, it was considerably harder to find an adequate way to react to the situation www.proasyl.de/thema/fakten-zahlen-argumente. We, in Germany, still have the important task of offering not only adequate measures for the integration of those displaced but also the chance of a humane cohabitation. Providing assistance for the transition of countries like (Jordan and Egypt) who are facing the immense effects of immigration and their will to help asylum seekers while having less resources and support than Germany.

With this as a backdrop, we set the goal of uniting specialists from Jordan, Egypt and Germany with our project‚ STRENGTHENING ENGAGEMENT - EMPOWERMENT FOR SOLIDARITY AND INTEGRATION‘, enabling them to partake in an intercultural exchange and gain experience regarding the issues of escape, integration and media use. In our eyes, the project was very relevant as it obtained lasting effects in international cooperation and development of local activities and initiatives through cross-border encounters. Through local exchange between specialists and youths, extensive skills and competences were gained, in order to shape lasting measures. On the one hand, these should contribute to the support of refugees in their home countries and on the other, to the understanding and sensitisation for the living conditions of those displaced. Through these extensive eye level encounters, solidarity, unity, justice, tolerance and equality were not only made subjects of discussion but were also able to be lived out and carried on. Together with the AKIJA (Arbeitskreis Internationale Jugendarbeit e.V.) from Freiburg, the ‚Caritas Jordan‘ and ‚Caritas Alexandria‘ as well as the youth organisation NON DALLA GUERRA from Vicenza, we were able to organise nine intercultural encounters in total for young people and specialists in the time between April and December of 2018.

التمكني من خالل التبادل خالل السنوات األخرية املاضية عملنا عىل مراقبة أوضاع الناس يف البالد التي دمرتها الحروب خالل العام 2017تم منح 198000حق لجوء أضافة اىل 890000 طلبا لالمان .وقد كان من الصعب أن نجد طريقة مالمئة لالستجابة للوضع .نحن ،يف أملانيا ،ما زال لدينا دور هام وهو تقديم ليس فقط تدابري كافية إلدماج أولئك املرشدين فحسب ،بل أيضا فرصة للعيش اإلنساين املشرتك .هدفنا ان نقوم بدعم البلدان االكرث تأثرا بسبب تبعيات اللجوء كاألردن ومرص ورغبتهم يف تقديم املساعدة عىل الرغم من نقص الوارد واملساعدات مقارنة بأملانيا.

بهذه الخلفية ،وضعنا هدف توحيد االختصاصيني من األردن ومرص وأملانيا مع ناحية أخرى ان تعمل عىل فهم واستيعاب الظروف املعيشية ألولئك النازحني .من مرشوعنا „تعزيز االرتباط -التمكني من أجل التضامن واالندماج“ ،ومتكينهم املوسعة عىل مستوىاملشاركة الحية ،فإن التضامن والوحدة من املشاركة يف تبادل الثقافات واكتساب الخربة فيام يتعلق بقضايا وء والنزوح خالل هذه اللقاءات ّ واالندماج واستخدام وسائل اإلعالم .برأينا ،كان املرشوع ذو أهمية من وجهة نظرنا والعدالة والتسامح واملساواة مل يتم طرحها كموضوع للنقاش فقط ولكن تم العيش بها ونقلها. فإن هذا املرشوع موضوعي بطريقة نسبية حيث تبنى املؤثرات الدامئة نتيجة للتعاون الدويل وتطوير األنشطة واملبادرات املحلية من خالل اللقاءات التي تعرب ‘‚(Arbeitskreis Internationale Jugendarbeit e.V.) AKIJA من فرايبورغ ،و „كاريتاس األردن“ و „كاريتاس اإلسكندرية“ ،وكذلك منظمة الحدود .وقد تم اكتساب عدد من املهارات والكفاءات من أجل ايجاد اثر دائم الشباب ‚ ‘NON DALLA GUERRAمن فينيسيا ،استطعنا تنظيم تسعة وذلك من خالل برامج التبادل املحيل بني الشباب واملختصني. لقاءات تبادل ثقايف مجمله من الشباب واملتخصصني يف الفرتة ما بني أبريل فمن ناحية ،ينبغي عىل هذه الجهود أن تدعم الالجئني يف بلدانهم األصلية ومن ديسمرب من عام .2018 7

INTERCULTURAL RISE 09.08.18 - 25.08.18 MAFRAQ, JORDAN
On the 9th of August, 20 young adults from Italy, Spain, France and Germany set off to Amman, Jordan. For eleven days they lived in the town of Mafraq, 80 km away from the Jordanian capital Amman - in close proximity to the Syrian border. Central to this youth encounter was the cohabitation of the participants with the hosting institutions and local communities. The youth were able to experience regular everyday life and
become socially engaged in a variety of establishments. This way they were able to provide the needed assistance during school lessons, accompany the social workers for the Caritas Jordan to work or visit refugee families from Syria, who had been living in Jordan for several years. In addition to this, there were afternoons of playing games with different groups of children from Syria and Jordan. A special focus was on the Abu Ali camp, an informal refugee camp of around 20 Syrian families, who independently built their own little village near Mafraq. During the week, it was frequently visited by small groups, who came to spend time with the families and children.

املفرق ،األردن
يف التاسع من أغسطس ،توجه 20شابًا وشابة إيطاليا وإسبانيا وفرنسا وأملانيا إىل عامن باألردن .عاشوا ملدة 11يوماً يف مدينة املفرق ،عىل بعد 80كم من العاصمة األردنية عامن -عىل مقربة من الحدود السورية .كان محور لقاء الشباب هذا هو تعايش املشاركني مع املراكز املضيفة واملجتمعات املحلية. كان الشباب واإلنخراط اجتامعيا عىل اختبار الحياة اليومية االعتيادية واالنخراط االجتامعي يف مجموعة متنوعة من املؤسسات .وبهذه الطريقة استطاعوا استطاعوا تقديم املساعدة ا ُناء الساعات الدراسية خالل الدروس يف املدرسة ،ومرافقة املساعدين االجتامعيني يف كاريتاس األردن للعمل أو زيارة عائالت الالجئني من سوريا ،الذين كانوا يعيشون يف األردن منذ عدة سنوات. باإلضافة إىل ذلك ،كان هناك ألعاب بعد الظهر مع مجموعات مختلفة من األطفال من سوريا واألردن .وكان الرتكيز بشكل خاص عىل مخيم أبو عيل، وهو مخيم غري رسمي لالجئني يضم حوايل 20عائلة سورية ،والتي قامت ببناء قرية صغرية خاصة بهم بالقرب من املفرق بشكل مستقل .وخالل األسبوع ،كان يزورهم بشكل متكرر مجموعات صغرية كانت تأيت لقضاء بعض الوقت مع عائالتهم وأطفالهم. 9

“UNFORGETTABLE ENCOUNTERS” 28.09.18 - 07.10.18 MADABA, JORDAN
The second encounter included the participation of youth from different countries, cultures and experiences. This exchange had a paramount effect especially on the level of human interactions and expanding the youths’ horizon. In our current day and age, a specific conception of refugees is conveyed by various media, channels, outlets and social media interface apps which often reduces those affected to their status as a refugee. Therefore, this international meet up was to offer the chance to get your own impression on-site and dismantle potential stereotypes. The 26 participants from Italy, Germany and Jordan lived in an ex-refugee camp, which had sheltered 125 Iraqi refugees in a cramped space a few years previously. The camp’s schedule included different activities and the chance to observe the work being done through the centers of caritas Jordan. There were visits to different projects dealing with Iraqi refugees, who are officially not allowed to work in Jordan. Each participant from

the camp visited two separate Iraqi families to gain direct insight into the their lives in this foreign country after having to suddenly flee Iraq. In the afternoons, the volunteers visited around 30-40 Iraqi children and offered different activities such as group games or painting banners for the campaign ‚Share the Journey‘. Furthermore, the group visited further places like the German-Jordanian University (GJU), Petra, Wadi Rum and the capital Amman and organised intercultural evenings.

خالل هذا اللقاء الشبايب الثاين ،كان تبادل الناس من مختلف البلدان والثقافات وتوسع اآلفاق والحاالت مهامً ،حتى يتعرفوا عىل بعضهم بشكل أفضل ِّ الشخصية .يف يومنا وعرصنا الحايل ،يتم نقل مفهوم معني عن الالجئني من قبل وسائل اإلعالم املختلفة ،والتي غالبا ما تقلل من املترضرين عىل وضعهم كالجئ .ولذلك ،كان هذا اللقاء الدويل هو إتاحة الفرصة للحصول عىل انطباعك الشخيص يف املوقع وتفكيك الصور النمطية املحتملة .عاش املشاركون الستة والعرشون من إيطاليا وأملانيا واألردن يف مخيم سابق لالجئني ،والذي كان يأوي 125الجئ عراقي يف مساحة ضيقة قبل سنوات عدة .استخرجت أيام املخيم العرشة عدة بنود يف جدول األعامل :أتيحت الفرصة للمشاركني لرؤية عمل كاريتاس األردن .كان هناك زيارات ملشاريع مختلفة تتعلق بالالجئني العراقيني، الذين ال يُسمح لهم العمل رسمياً يف األردن .زار كل مشارك من املخيم عائلتني عراقيتني منفصلتني للحصول رؤية مبارشة عىل حياتهم يف هذا البلد األجنبي بعد أن اضطروا إىل الفرار املفاجئ من العراق .بعد الظهر ،زار املتطوعون حوايل 30-40طفالً عراقيني وقدموا أنشطة مختلفة مثل ألعاب جامعية أو الفتات الرسم لحملة „شاركونا الرحلة“ .عالوة عىل ذلك ،قامت املجموعة بزيارة أماكن أخرى مثل الجامعة األملانية األردنية ( )GJUوالبرتاء ووادي رام والعاصمة عامن وتم تنظيم أمسيات تبادل ثقايف.

It is a simple simulation for different circumstances, which gives a chance to the participants to live and imagine real-life situations which are often lived by others. WE WASTE NO WASTE 17.09.18 - 23.09.2018 BAD URACH, GERMANY
Plastic waste is a global problem. To give you an idea, the municipal solid waste generation in Jordan lies at 2,077,215 t/yr, whilst in Egypt it‘s 21,100,000 t/yr, in Italy 29,910,727 t/yr and in Germany it comes to around 50,526,031 t/yr. Waste has been dealt with in a variety of ways. It‘s important to learn from one another, try to see what is in common and how waste can be fought together. Youth workers from Jordan, Romania, Poland, Ukraine, Italy and Germany came together for a meeting in Bad Urach in order to exchange ideas and best practices for waste reduction. The week was full of presentations, workshops on Zero Waste and Upcycling and excursions. The participating partner organisation Caritas Jordan presented its green project “Mercy Garden”, which offers employment to disadvantaged adults in Amman. Mercy Garden is both the place and label of organic and upcycled products such as soaps, agricultural crops, olive

oil, composting, textiles and more. Visiting the Zero Waste Shop in Reutlingen was a highlight for many participants who had never been to a plastic free shop before. By the end of the week the participants had developed new projects such as youth exchanges and zero waste initiatives to implement together in the future. A youth exchange on waste reduction called “Go Zero, Danube” is planned to be implemented at the beginning of 2019.

Caritas Egypt organised an eventful meeting for all the partners in Alexandria and Cairo for a total of eight representatives from the partner organisations. After completion of the project, the eight different partners wanted to get together and reflect on the events. The conference also served the purpose of promoting future cooperation and developing skills as management staff. An important moment was the visit to the Caritas Egypt offices in Alexandria. Here, the different partners gained an insight into the work of Caritas in the whole of Egypt and were able to introduce themselves to the chairman Hany Maurice. In addition to the already mentioned agenda, the cultural exchange and interreligious dialog also stood in the foreground. There was also the intention to make the most of the cultural offers from different religious groups. The youth representatives visited both a Jesuit Centre and the Dominican Institute in Cairo. Furthermore, Starkmacher e.V.‘s Mathias Kaps introduced the partners to the educational approach to ‚sustainable coffee production‘, which could play a central role in the next encounters and future projects. Finally, there was a look into the future: It was agreed that the focus of the following year will be on social entrepreneurship in transitioning countries such as Egypt and Jordan.

In October 2018 the first coffee training with volunteers from Jordan and Germany took place at a Café called AGÁTA in Mannheim. The goal of the training was to connect coffee with the employability of the participants and to enable access to the opportunities in coffee business. This included important elements of educational work such as the development of intercultural and personal competences, the relevance of quality assurance and recognition or rather support of informal learning. During this first meeting, the volunteers Quote: • ‚The coffee campus was a great opportunity to meet young Jordanian volunteers and professional people working with immigrants. The campus’ training was performed on a very professional level with a great passion and enthusiasm. were introduced to the world of coffee, coffee roasting and sensory and barista skills. Café AGÁTA was able to show, for example, that a coffee startup can be successful. The café works closely with the NGO Starkmacher and the related coffee projects. In addition to its quality, the AGÁTA coffee distinguishes itself in particular through short transportation routes and direct cooperation with small farmers. The highlight of this will be the completion of the training along with the certification during the next meeting in Jordan.

The special focus of the second coffee training in Jordan was on business modelling in coffee roasting and the development of the coffee shop business. A particular goal of the training was to convey to the volunteers new career perspectives, competences and knowledge that could provide them with new opportunities on the job market. The volunteers learnt about what it takes to found a coffee startup, how to develop a Canvas Business Model and which entrepreneurial competences are required to found

a successful startup. Furthermore, there were discussions on the challenges of the coffee market in Jordan along with its entrepreneurial chances and risks. Currently Jordan still has very few coffee businesses. Therefore the partners and volunteers are convinced that the training of specialists and the employees of Caritas Jordan could be forward-thinking and sustainable. In this way, concrete plans for 2019 were made in which a café for refugees, run by refugees will be built with support from Café AGÁTA, Starkmacher, Umami and Caritas Jordan. At the end, all participants successfully absolved the training und received a Coffee Skills Program Certificate by the Speciality Coffee Association.

PARTNER MEETING 2018 10.12.18 - 14.12.18 BAD URACH, GERMANY
Keeping the theme ‚Networking is not collecting contracts - it‘s about planting plants‘ in mind, the partners of Starkmacher e.V. from over 10 countries met in midst an exceptional atmosphere, which was characterised by creativity, exchange and visions. During the week the partners intensified their relationships and further educated themselves on a professional level. In terms of content, the compilation of important elements of non-profit work such as the European application system and implementation of what was learnt was of particular importance. Anja Schleef from the Pax Bank offered many informative pieces of advice regarding the topic ‚Transformation Leadership‘, a concept of performance enhancement through transformation of values and attitudes. In a ‚Creative Session‘ the participants got together daily to continue working on existing ideas and concepts for new projects. Thereby, the

diversity amongst the participants offered an interesting and creative exchange. As a whole, the partner meeting was full of success and in line with the theme ‚networking is about planting plants‘, many new seeds in form of relationships were planted, which will certainly become fruitful in the future. ‚The partner meeting at Bad Urach was very important for AMU-Portugal. It is true that projects and collaborations can’t be built in a day or even in a single meeting but events such as those in Bad Urach certainly provide all the conditions for key first steps. For us at AMU-Portugal the meeting gave us a chance to strengthen the relationship with Starkmacher and understand on how we can do more and better work together while, at the same time, broadening our contacts. We hope these events can be repeated in the future and we can continue to build a strong network of collaborations and, ultimately, successful projects.‘ Francisco, AMU Portugal

CELEBRATING AKIJA 17.11.2018 FREIBURG, GERMANY
After 25 years of successful work with Egypt, Lebanon, Palestine, Syria and Jordan, the AKIJA (Arbeitskreis Internationale Jugendarbeit e.V.) had good reason to celebrate. So, in November 70 guests got together in the catholic youth office in Freiburg, among those there were active and previous members along with volunteers, friends and international partners of the organisation. Thanks to funding from the foreign office, even representatives from Caritas Jordan and Caritas Egypt were able to take part in the event. The evening was a celebration with an exquisite Syrian buffet, intercultural dance with refugees and belly dancing. The ‚Silent Play‘ by Non Dalla Guerra, too, was performed and got great response. With a successful number of participants and an appealing agenda, the party was the absolute highlight of the past few years.

Starkmacher e.V. (founded in 2006) is a civil society non-profit organisation and bearer of free youth support in both the area of youth work and extracurricular youth education. It is an organisation run by and for people, who carry the promotion and development of young people‘s potential close to their hearts. The main function is to empower primarily young people and disadvantaged children and to enable a positive reaction to lacking orientation, missing values and increasing violence. Their main areas of work are informal education, intercultural/religious/global learning and youth work in various social and ethnic contexts. In addition to this, they promote fundamental rights, citizenship and equality. Moreover, Starkmacher e.V. are behind various innovative and inclusive educational projects such as ‚Sports4Peace‘ (integration of refugees through sports), ‚Stark ohne Gewalt‘ (violence prevention through art and music) and coffee projects to support small farmers worldwide.

Caritas Jordan (CJ) has been a registered organisation in Jordan since 1967 and embodies the goal of meeting the needs of Palestinian refugees and Jordanians, who have been affected by the Six-Day War. Since then Caritas has been working with disadvantaged groups and refugees from Iraq and other countries, who were afflicted by the aftermath of the Gulf War (1991) and the displacement of Iraqi refugees to Jordan since the invasion of Iraq in 2003. In all 12 governments of the country there are Caritas institutions for the needs of refugees and Jordanians, who live in remote areas. Currently there are 460 full-time employees and 3000 volunteers occupied at the organisation. CJ is active in the areas of medicine, education, humanitarian aid, distribution of food and nonfood help, psychosocial support, emergency services and raising awareness.

AKIJA (Arbeitskreis Internationale Jugendarbeit e.V.) was established in Freiburg in 1993. The association cooperates with partner organisations in different Arab countries (Egypt, Lebanon, Palestine, Syria, Jordan). AKIJA‘s cooperating partners are the Caritas youth organisations in each country, respectively. AKIJA has organised over 15 workcamps in Egypt, Lebanon, Palestine, Jordan and Germany. AKIJA unites young people of different cultures, independent of their nationality, ethnic affinity or religion. Through events and campaigns, the association promotes intercultural learning, familiarisation with different/foreign cultures and dismantling prejudices. In addition to this, there is focus on sensitisation for problems foreign people face in Germany and looking at global issues such as poverty, emigration and destruction of the environment.

„Non Dalla Guerra“ (NDG), founded in 2016, consists primarily of around 200 young people between the age of 18 and 26 from Vicenza, Italy. The aim of this association is to help those who have fled the Syrian-Iraqi War, especially those living in Jordan. In order to do this, it organises volunteer camps, working closely with Caritas Jordan and campaigns to raise awareness in Italy. NDG also collects funds and donations for educational projects involving refugee children. In addition to working with schools in Vicenza and Jordan, NDG works with many young people in the scouts, christian groups and different cultural organisations. The ‚Silent Play‘ is a poignant method utilised in various campaigns: using a kind of audioguide, found in theatres, topics such as migration, escape and war in form of interactive, poetic and playful performances are made more tangible for the listener.

AND NOW WHAT? ‚When I look back on the past project ‚Strengthening engagement - Empowerment for solidarity and integration‘, I am very satisfied. The most important thing was getting to know another culture and analysing it. Many incentives were created to encourage social engagement in young adults, causeing them to look beyond their horizons. In doing so, they were to assimilate a more global perspective and reflect on how to reach the goal of a united world. The participants were able to make new friends and we could simultaneously strengthen and expand the mutual network with the participating partner organisations from Egypt, Jordan and Italy. This is especially important for us, as every organisation has its own talents and skills relating to social and historical backgrounds, which can be incorporated into the cooperation. We want to promote young talent, supply it with sustainable tools and at the same time strengthen the exchange of know-how so we can - as the title ‚Strengthening engagement‘ indicates - maintain and improve social structures long-term with our partners! This coming year will revolve

around ‚social entrepreneurship‘. Among other things, these projects will contribute to the employability of young people, improve the situation of refugees in affected countries and promote the exchange of know-how by focussing on the areas of culture, coffee and social tourism‘. وماذا اآلن؟ „عندما أنظر مرة أخرى إىل املرشوع السابق“ تعزيز املشاركة -التمكني من أجل التضامن واالندماج „ ،أنا ٍ راض للغاية .من املهم التعرف عىل ثقافة أخرى وتحليلها .تم إنشاء العديد من الدوافع لتشجيع املشاركة االجتامعية لدى الشباب ،مام جعلهم ينظرون إىل ما وراء آفاقهم .وللقيام بذلك ،كان عليهم استيعاب منظور عاملي أكرث والتفكري يف كيفية الوصول إىل هدف عامل موحد. ومتكن املشاركون من تكوين صداقات جديدة يف الوقت نفسه أمكنهم تعزيز وتوسيع الشبكة املتبادلة مع املنظامت الرشيكة املشاركة من مرص واألردن وإيطاليا .هذا مهم بشكل خاص بالنسبة لنا ،حيث أن كل منظمة لديها مواهبها ومهاراتها الخاصة املتعلقة بالخلفيات االجتامعية والتاريخية ،والتي ميكن دمجها يف عملية التعاون .نريد تعزيز املواهب الشابة وتزويدها بأدوات مستدامة ويف نفس الوقت تعزيز تبادل املعرفة حتى ميكننا -كام يشري عنوان „تعزيز املشاركة“ -حامية وتحسني الهياكل االجتامعية عىل املدى الطويل مع رشكائنا! سوف تدور هذه السنة القادمة حول „ريادة األعامل االجتامعية“. من بني أمور أخرى ،ستساهم هذه املشاريع يف توظيف الشباب وتحسني وضع الالجئني يف البلدان املترضرة وتشجيع تبادل املعرفة من خالل الرتكيز عىل مجاالت الثقافة والنب والسياحة االجتامعية „. ماتياس كابس ) ( FOUNDER OF STARKMACHER
