Isn’t it wonderful to be able to go outside, attend events, and see people’s faces beyond a screen? I know my family is excited for summer and new adventures. There are so many things for you and your family to do at your Library this summer. With hundreds of programs and events at our locations, you will find something for everyone in your family! We’re excited to open our first permanent story walk—Trail Tales—at our Perry Sippo Branch. Our friends at Stark Parks are the best, and this project (funded by a grant) is a perfect partnership between our organizations. Each month there will be a new story for you and your kids to read and experience. Speaking of new adventures, we’re heading into a big new adventure here at the Library. Some libraries refer to their website and online services as their ‘digital branch,’ which I think is appropriate since many patrons access library materials online—using our extensive collection of eBooks, eAudiobooks, eMagazines, databases, and other online resources. We’re bringing our ‘digital branch’ into the 21st Century! Over the next several months, you’ll notice some changes to our website. First, we are updating and improving our digital catalog. With smarter searching and better browsing, your digital library experience will rival the best online retail experience you can imagine. Not only will you be able to find books by your favorite author, but you’ll also discover other suggested titles that are similar. You can even create your own reading lists — meaning your TBR pile will never lack for new titles! Because this catalog is shared across many libraries, you’ll have access to reviews by a whole community of readers. You’ll also find book lists from your favorite librarians. I hate to say this, but this online catalog might be the best thing since the card catalog! We’re also updating our website later this year, helping you to find the things you want to do, see, and learn at the Library. Not only that, but your online adventure will help you discover even more exciting things that we have at the Library. Let your next adventure begin at your Library!

Your Library We’re on year two in our Re|imagine project, with three branches completed, and three more to go this year! If you’ve been to any of our Re|imagined branches—North Branch, East Canton, or Madge Youtz—you know how timeline welcoming and inviting they are. Patrons have told us that they love spending time in these libraries! Our Perry Sippo branch is closed, but we will re-open this summer. Beginning in June, DeHoff Memorial Branch will close to be Re|imagined for the 21st century. But don’t worry—the bookmobile will come to you, so you’ll still have access to Library services. Growing Curious Kids Miss Dayna looks around at a circle of little, smiling faces. “Who can count?” “Me!” one little boy shouts. “How high?” she asks. “100! 10!” children excitedly respond over each other, while others quietly observe. “Maybe you don’t count YET, but soon you will,” says Miss Dayna. Children’s Librarian, Dayna DiMarco, uses the word ’yet,’ modeling a growth mindset for parents, grandparents, caregivers, and little ones in Toddler Storytime at Stark Library’s Lake Community Branch. The growth mindset is a key component of the Library’s literacy program, designed to help families prepare children through age eight for success in school and in life.
Stark Library’s staff encourages families to enjoy learning through exploration and play, rather than focusing only on the result. Two-year-old Jacob, lifting flaps in a picture book in the children’s section, is happily unaware that his mom is incorporating a growth mindset with him. Elizabeth Williams says that, with her seven-year-old daughter, she would help her make a craft in storytime as perfectly as possible. However, with Jacob, she sits back, lets him explore, asks questions, and encourages his efforts. In fact, Miss Dayna no longer shows an example during craft time because she wants kids to resist aiming for an ideal and, instead, grow in their own way.
Kids achieve more when the grown-ups in their lives compliment their hard work on “A growth mindset offers an opportunity for kids to blossom and improve,” a project or concept. It inspires Literacy Manager, Julia Shaheen, them to try new things. explains. “With a growth mindset, learning will make you smarter, but with a fixed mindset, you’re as smart as you’ll ever be. Kids achieve more when the grown-ups in their lives compliment their hard work on a project or concept. It inspires them to try new things.”
Julia says that after age eight, children ‘read to learn,’ rather than ‘learn to read,’ making it critical for families to continue to help their children develop throughout their early years, rather than focusing solely on getting ready for kindergarten.
At Preschool Storytime, Miss Dayna hands out colored pom poms with Velcro strips. As the dog in the book she’s reading gets covered in messes of different colors, a child with the corresponding color affixes it to a dog on a board. Four-year-old Holly excitedly brings forward a green spot when the dog rolls in the grass. When Miss Dayna realizes that she mistakenly placed a gray spot when the dog rolled in blue paint, she tells the group that mistakes are good; they help us learn. Holly’s Mom, Emily Hunnicutt notices, “I really appreciate how Miss Dayna helps grow their brains and accept

mistakes; like when Miss Dayna made a mistake, she was okay with it— helping the kids to recognize that if they don’t understand something now, that they WILL understand something after they learn it.” For parents with struggling readers, Julia suggests saying, “Maybe you’re not ready for this book yet, but let me read it to you, or what if we took turns?” She also encourages praising the skills and tips they are using, with phrases like, “I like how you’re trying to sound out those words — or I like that you’re following the words with your finger.” The library has many tips for parents, including conversation starters. Julia cites an example of an observant parent commenting on a child using blue blocks instead of green and asking why. She says, “It shows them that you care and are interested in what they are doing, but it also helps them think a little more deeply about what they’re doing. And that helps with comprehension skills later.” And if you earn any strange looks for beginning to implement other tips, like singing a nursery rhyme while in line at the grocery store with your child, congratulate yourself. You are showing the world a parent with a growth mindset. Visit your Library to find free school readiness and literacy resources.

The Magic of
North Branch
Toddlers dance in a magical world filled with bubbles; an entrepreneur creates a website; and a retired couple enjoys comfy chairs, camaraderie, and a great view while reading their favorites for free. These are just a few pictures inside North Branch, a centerpiece of the Northwest Canton’s Ridgewood neighborhood on 25th Street since 1962. The branch is one of Stark Library’s oldest. Many bike or walk here, drive through the pick-up window with a dog in tow or take a break after baseball practice at the park to find their next great read. 14
Ashley Gladysz began coming here in 1995 as a young girl with her Mom. Now, on Wednesday mornings, she brings her four-yearold daughter, Callie, through the door from the parking lot straight into Miss Mary’s world, where pink snakes jump out of books (figuratively, of course), a book about rhythm inspires movement, and tunes get all the little kids dancing with shaker eggs in their fists, keeping time. Callie and her Mom call their library “super-friendly.” In the newly remodeled children’s section, they check out “Pinkalicious” books, along with “Magic Treehouse” books for Callie’s three older brothers. The renovated space was unveiled last summer (part of our Re|imagine project).
Locations & Summer Hours June–August 2022 Main Library Lake Community Sun streams past paper flowers on a huge, windowed wall overlooking 25th Street, where almost three-year-old Joanna Von Hollingsworth asks her grandpa to “paint please.” Using an interactive table with a monitor as the surface, she asks him to select “my favorite, green” as she uses her finger to smudge digital paint on a black and white character. Nearby, almost-two-year-old Sophia giggles as she carefully builds a house for a tiny blue elephant, using the Lego table. Her dad, Patrick Kelly, says, “The friendliness, the inclusion here… you just feel at home. Someone is always saying ‘Hello!’” Creativity is not limited to kids. In the adult section, branch manager, Katie Ferrero points out beautiful, intricate drawings of mushrooms doodled on paper pads affixed to round tables. Katie says. “We have patrons we see daily. They feel a sense of ownership. North Branch isn’t just any library, it’s THEIR library.” It’s the perfect place for John Shaheen to get work done. He is not isolated here, as he builds a website for his mobile bartending service. “I love sitting at the desk, being in this environment, an office environment with better lighting and fast, powerful WiFi.”
There are also laptops patrons can use anywhere in the library, including in the meeting room and new study rooms. Larry and Rebecca Libster’s home computer is broken, but that’s not the only reason they visit the North Branch. The couple no longer pays for home delivery of the paper, preferring to read articles and their favorite books for free in comfortable chairs near the huge picture window overlooking the park. Rebecca has an informal book group of sorts with library assistant, Judy Talbott, where they continually debate their favorite authors’ latest works. Rebecca comments, “The staff are wonderful, with any information you need to get, copies you need to make..”

“It’s really convenient,” Larry adds. Since the library’s reopening in July, combined with the easing of COVID-19 restrictions, more families are finding their way back to their branch. In a time of rising inflation, enrichment is here for free, with a warm greeting, often by your first name, when you enter. Patrick Kelly, who has lived in the area for 12 years, sums it up nicely, “It is just your friendly neighborhood library.”
