10 Reasons to visit Guildford

Shop till you drop

Historic Heritage

Voted the best luxury shopping destination outside of London* Guildford offers the traditional high street names, luxury brands, and side streets with independent stores. There are two undercover shopping malls, including The Friary Guildford, so you can shop till you drop even when it rains! The weekly North Street market and monthly Farmers Market keep the heritage of the town alive.

Guildford’s oldest building is St Mary’s Church with its Saxon tower. You will see buildings through the ages from the medieval Castle Keep, the Tudor Guildhall, Jacobean Abbots Hospital and Georgian Art Gallery. Take a tour with Guildford’s Town Guides and let them guide you back in time to explore Guildford in times gone by.

Afternoon Tea

From Guildford’s High Street, you can see the green and wooded Mount rising to the south of the town, on the old route to Portsmouth. You can walk along the towpath of the River Wey or head for the famous North Downs Way. Surrey is the most wooded county in England so be prepared for some spectacular views.

Traditional English Afternoon Tea is served all over town and further afield. From luxury Queen of Hearts Teas at Radisson Blu Edwardian including a glass of Prosecco, to hearty teas in the cafes and pubs you won’t have to go far to find the perfect platter for you.

Eating Out Guildford Town offers a number of restaurants covering a wide range of international cuisine. The Gastro pubs in the town centre and surrounding countryside offer traditional food, often locally farmed. Look out for Denbies Wine to wash it down or if you prefer, some Hogs Back Beer!

Festivals and More! Whenever you visit you are bound to find lots going on from music to drama, choirs to pop bands. Do look out for the special festivals (see pages 10-14) including the Investec International Music Festival, Guildford Summer Festival, Guildford Fringe Festival and Guildford Book Festival which all bring national and international names to the stages in town.

Guildford Nightlife! Visit the Yvonne Arnaud theatre for quality drama pre-West-End, or G Live for orchestras, bands, comedians and shows, or the Electric Theatre for local home grown theatre. Live music can be found in many pubs and clubs, and there are nightclubs for those who want to dance till dawn.

Countryside

Views Climb up to the top of Guildford’s Castle Keep for the most spectacular view of the surrounding countryside. Other places that we recommend you take your camera for the best views are Newlands Corner, Box Hill, Leith Hill and The Mount – these make perfect picnic areas too.

Memorable Stay Treat yourself to a luxury stay at Radisson Blu Edwardian Guildford and indulge in the spa or cocktails on the terrace but still within walking distance of all the town shopping and heritage. Or you can escape to the countryside in a hotel surrounded by lanes for walking or cycling, or why not snuggle up in a cosy B&B.

Art and Culture Join the Guildford Town Guides for a Public Art Walk or head for Guildford House Gallery in the centre of the town to see their constantly changing programme of exhibitions. Head out of town and explore the Watts Gallery and Artists Village in Compton and look out for sculpture exhibitions in Churt, at Loseley Park or RHS Wisley.

In just 24 hours Download the Hand Held Tours Historic Guildford Trail (see page 27) or pick up a map from the Tourist Information Centre.

• Start your day with taking a photo in front of the Guildhall making sure you get the magnificent overhanging clock in the background so you can share with your friends on social media! • Continue up Tunsgate to the Castle Grounds – if you don’t stop for coffee and croissants before then, as there are a few cafés to pass first! Take in the stunning flower beds in the Castle grounds and if you are feeling fit, climb to the very top of The Keep for spectacular views of the town. • When walking around the Castle Grounds, pop in to the Alice Garden to see the Alice Through The Looking Glass Statue – a tribute to Lewis Carroll who frequently stayed in Guildford at The Chestnuts and is buried in the Mount Cemetery. • Down to Quarry Street and time to pop in to Guildford Museum to see more about Lewis Carroll as well as local history and needlework collections. Head down Mill Lane past St Mary’s Church where Lewis Carroll preached as Rev Charles Dodgson.

8

visitguildford.com

• Crossing the road you will see the Yvonne Arnaud Theatre and the Mill Studio – home of quality theatre with a delightful restaurant and café right on the River Wey. Go around the theatre and cross the bridge by the Lock – you can even stop to feed the ducks! • Walking along the river you will find yet another statue dedicated to the works of Lewis Carroll – Alice and her sister watch the rabbit go down the hole! On the corner of the next bridge there are two pubs – is it lunchtime yet? • Go across the Town Bridge and turn left onto the Town Wharf with the statue of The Boatman – imagine this as the bustling industrial heart of town in years gone by. This path ends at The Electric Theatre, with more outdoor riverside seating, but before then, turn right into Riverside Passage and you are now in the shopping area. Head for The Friary Guildford and then down Friary Street where you will find shops and restaurants. • Turn left into the High Street and look up the hill to the famous cobbled street, plenty of shops to choose from and cafés too! Turn left into Angel Gate for a real treat from the past – a quaint alley filled with shops and another coffee stop. • More shops to be found in North Street as well as a small haven of calm in Quakers Acre Garden. Return to the High Street through Jeffries Passage. Holy Trinity Church is well worth a visit – especially to the tomb of George Abbot, Archbishop of Canterbury who built Abbot’s Hospital (page 29) opposite. On any day you can venture as far as the barrier for a peep but tours are available on certain days of the week. • As night falls head to one of the many pubs or restaurants – some of which have live music and entertainment, or head for the theatre or G Live. Guildford’s Purple Flag award means you can be confident of a safe and enjoyable night out.

Must See, Must Do • The View from the top of the Castle Keep • A selfie on the balcony of The Guildhall • Step back in time at The Spike Vagrants Ward • Walk along the River Wey • Enjoy some local wine or beer • A browse around the shops – especially the side streets • A taste of Surrey – from home reared beef to local watercress • The Mount Cemetery with Lewis Carroll’s grave.

Explore outdoors – walking and cycling in Guildford For a gentle stroll let the Guildford Town Guides take you back in time with their free Historic Guildford walks taking just over an hour (see page 31). A walk along the River Wey Navigations, where you can watch the birds and the wildlife as well as boaters, takes you away from the bustle of the town and into a tranquil world. Head down to Godalming, or up through Send and Ripley with many cosy pub stops on the way. Take a circular walk from Guildford Castle to Shalford Mill and back going past St Catherine’s Lock, Pewley Hill and Pewley Fort. Or for the fit and adventurous take in Newlands Corner and St Martha’s Hill for spectacular views of the Surrey Hills Area of Outstanding Beauty – taking a camera is a must!. Starting a short drive from Guildford Town Centre, walk through the beautiful countryside of Shere, the North Downs and Abinger Hammer. From here you can access the famous North Downs Way opened in 1978, remaining close to old pilgrim tracks. Contact Guildford Tourist Information Centre (Page 17) for a wide range of maps and books.

Sitting on the fence can be uncomfortable. At Steak & Lobster we just don’t do it. We cook 2 things and we cook them unquestionably well, and now we bring our powers of decisiveness to the hungry mouths of Guildford. Ribeye Steak. 10oz of prime dry-aged rib-eye steak. Griddled to mouth-watering perfection. The only choice you need to make is how rare you like it. Lobster. A whole lobster served in the half-shell with garlic butter. We grill it or steam it, then you eat it. Simple. You’ll be pleased to know that our wine selection is as finely honed as our menu. Every day we select a handful of reds and whites from our collection. We keep it simple, but you knew that already right? If you prefer rosé or champagne (get you!), just ask. We’ll complete your banquet with unlimited skinny fries and delicious salad of baby leaves, banana shallots, parmesan, sunflower seeds and croutons. Just choose whether to have another serving or give up. Hailing from Central London, our restaurants are trendy yet not pretentious. Chic but not shack. And at £20 for either steak or lobster, the only other decision is who you dine with. Steak & Lobster Guildford. 2 ways to dine, choose one.

The medieval undercroft on Guildford High Street is one of the finest examples in the country. Dating from the end of the 13th century, this stone vaulted semi-basement is thought to have been a merchant’s shop, selling wine or expensive cloths or silk. Undercrofts like this are a feature of towns engaged in the import and export trade, and the merchant who built this undercroft must have expected to deal with prosperous clients who sought luxury goods. There are traces of perhaps half a dozen undercrofts in Guildford at the time that this one was built. They were very expensive and only a rich merchant could afford the masonry work, indicating that Guildford was very wealthy throughout the middle ages. The 49 acre garden offers a fantastic experience for all ages that has been enjoyed by many generations. Group Travel Information 15 . Please contact us for further information. COACH

This new wildlife reserve at Shalford has been created by volunteers from the Wey & Arun Canal Trust (WACT), which is restoring the canal as a public amenity and ‘green corridor’ in Surrey and West Sussex. Enhancements include scrub clearance, the planting of native trees and the clearing of shallow ponds to attract wildfowl and insects such as dragonflies. The park straddles the Cranleigh Waters stream, a tributary of the River Wey, and is alongside the long-distance Wey-South Path, on the route of the disused Guildford to Horsham railway line. It features a wheelchair-accessible riverside path, a viewing platform offering vistas of meadowland and magnificent veteran oak trees, cycle racks and picnic tables. Further down the Wey-South Path, walkers and cyclists can explore the canal route to discover structures including a unique bridge and an aqueduct and view the section alongside Dunsfold Park due to be reopened to navigation in September 2016.
