Introduction Welcome to StAnza 2010, to another programme packed with enticement, coming hard on the heels of a year of unprecedented success. StAnza 2009 was our best attended festival yet, a highlight of Homecoming Scotland and a finalist in the Scottish Thistle Awards. As if that wasn’t enough, Artistic Director Eleanor Livingstone created a world first with the Distant Voices virtual festival, which is still making waves across the poetry community. In the 10 years I have been Festival Director we have always emphasised the celebratory nature of the festival, and 2010 is no exception. So it gives me great pleasure to welcome Seamus Heaney back to StAnza and to host poets from Austria, Canada, Croatia, Cuba, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Spain and the length and breadth of these islands. We are well known for our eclectic mix of events, and audiences can again look forward to relaxed Poetry Breakfasts, pie & pint lunchtime Cabarets and an expanded series of our intimate Round Table readings. On top of that we present an even wider range of exhibitions, featuring work by major Scottish artist John Bellany, a selection from the Edwin Morgan Archive and much more. As always, two themes will weave their way through the programme. The first, Myth & Legend, takes a contemporary look at a subject that has long inspired poets, ranging from Classical mythology to Celtic and Norse legends, fairy tales and Old Testament stories. The second, The Director’s Cut is, I have to admit, a total indulgence. Since I will be stepping down as Festival Director after StAnza 2010, I have been asked to nominate a dozen poets and an artist as a ‘final fling’ at programming. The poets are six who have never appeared at StAnza but whom I would be loath not to feature during my time as a director, and six of the poets I have most enjoyed hearing in the last 10 years; while the artist, Brigid Collins, is someone whose sensitive work with poetic text I have long admired. In total more than 60 poets, plus writers, artists, musicians and film-makers make up what we are confident will be another unique and memorable experience. Of course, much of this programme has been shaped and honed by my successor Eleanor Livingstone, and I wish her every success with future StAnzas. In the meantime, read on, take your pick of the events on offer, and join us to celebrate poetry.

Workshops, Masterclasses & Slam Workshops: These are participants only events, open to 16 persons maximum, who will have the opportunity to work directly with the poet. Masterclass: This is open to the public to listen or take part in discussion. A ticket for the masterclass must be purchased prior to submitting any work. To be considered for inclusion, send 3 poems (especially on “Myth & Legend”) up to 35 lines long to the contacts below. Each submission must quote the reference number on the event ticket and include the date of the masterclass plus a note of the entrant’s name, email address and/or phone number.
