President’s Report 2014-2015 Since its inception in 1934, the Parents Guild of St. Andrew’s College has steadfastly followed its mandate to enhance student life in all its diversity, foster Andrean community spirit, and provide scholarship and bursary assistance to the current students of SAC. For 81 years, the Parents Guild Executive has been representing St. Andrew’s College. For the past year, I have had the privilege of serving as the Parents Guild President. The dedication and commitment of the Parents Guild Executive (PGE) members has been an experience I will treasure forever. On a visit to St. Andrew’s College in 2008, my eldest son, Cole ’15, returned from his “SAC shadow day” and the feedback from his experience is permanently etched in my mind: “Mom … SAC is like Hogwarts and my shadow is exactly like me!” This excitement has only been matched after coming off the paintball field with bumps and bruises and covered in paint. From that day forward, the decision was made; both our boys, Cole and Chase ’16, would become Andreans. St. Andrew’s College has had such a positive impact on our sons’ lives as well as the lives of our entire family. We have watched our boys become debaters, actors, directors, mentors, drummers, politicians, world travellers, event coordinators, fence climbers, media personalities, and quite recently, mathematicians. My husband, Bob, and I have made lifelong friends at St. Andrew’s College. While the School has state-of-the-art facilities, it is the students, faculty, staff, and parents who give SAC its heart and soul. We are so grateful for the experience and the traditions that have been instilled in our lives. This past year has been a busy one at St. Andrew’s with the opening of the La Brier Family Arena in September, and the Centre for Leadership, Innovation & Performance in March. From a parent’s perspective, it was impressive to see the transformation of this campus (in a relatively short time) into a magnificent state-of-the-art facility. The construction process did not interrupt student activities or academics. The School put the boys’ needs ahead of construction. The promise to the grade 12’s was granted, and the graduating Class of 2015 experienced the new facilities. Thank you to Headmaster Kevin McHenry, faculty, and staff for keeping this promise and continuing to enhance our boys’ experiences now and into the future. From the moment one enters the campus, it is obvious that St. Andrew’s is “not an ordinary place.” From the flags that line the driveway to the impressive buildings, it is obvious the School stands for tradition, pride, and community. These qualities are a true reflection of the Parents Guild Executive. A sense of pride and community presents itself at every meeting. The Parents Guild plays a significant role at the School, and to have these qualities resonate throughout the group has given me great satisfaction. The PGE was recognized by the School for its time and financial contributions this past May with the foyer outside Ketchum Auditorium named in its honour. The PGE has contributed and pledged $1 million to the Not an Ordinary Place Campaign. This Annual Report provides summaries of each of the portfolios chaired by individual members of the PGE. It is with pleasure that I highlight some of these special moments and offer my sincere thanks for making my tenure as president such a wonderful experience. Planning for the September New Family Orientation Days begins in March, bringing all the Family Mentors together for a briefing and breakfast. Judy Davies has welcomed so many enthusiastic and dedicated family mentors to this program. Her professionalism and kindness is

reflective of this program. Judy and Marnie Sigmar, Family Mentor Vice-Chair, have proven to be wonderful matchmakers for new families and mentors. The month of September at SAC is busy and full of excitement. Plans were well underway for the return of current students, Old Boys, parents, and faculty at Homecoming as Liz Tsvetanov and Sue Carter began work months in advance. Food trucks, bouncy castles, vendors, face painters, signs, tents, bake goods, and décor are just a few of the components that give this much-anticipated day the fun and flavour Homecoming deserves. Liz’s quiet demeanour has consistently translated into big results. Thank you also for coordinating and beautifully displaying the hundreds of treats for Valentine’s Day – it is so rewarding to see the smiles and excitement from the boys, parents, faculty, and staff. St. Andrew’s has a very strong base of parent volunteers. The Parents Guild Executive is very proud of the growing list of over 200 active volunteers. Lisa Muenzenberger has efficiently and expertly reached out to many parents, offering a welcoming invitation to help with the slate of activities the PGE offers. Elena Dimitiriev assisted Lisa to ensure sufficient volunteers attended all events. Our Alternate Revenue Team of Susan Ennis and Iris Leung worked throughout the summer months preparing for the SAC RACK sale in September. SAC RACK provides extra uniform pieces for boys who outgrow or misplace items. The inventory consists of donated, gently used First Dress uniform pieces. Susan and Iris transformed a storage room into an impressive store, complete with signs, prices tags, and red and white SAC colours. For the Christmas fundraiser, Susan replaced the traditional Poinsettia Sale with SAC-crested cheese boards. These boards proved to be wildly popular and profitable for the PGE. The PGE plans events that allow parents to socialize, meet with old friends, and make new ones. Advancement’s Sharen Turner, Julie Karabin, and Rosanna D’Angelo organized two Parent Coffee Hours in Towers Library. Each Coffee Hour hosted guest speakers and gave parents the opportunity to visit and ask questions. February’s A Night in the SAC Art Gallery was another successful event with over 90 people gathered in Staunton Gallery. Premium wine, food, and art proved to be a winning combination and a wonderful experience. Next week, our grade 8 and grade 12 graduates will receive gifts from the Parents Guild, and I’d like to thank Julie for coordinating the purchase of these gifts, planning a wrapping session, and decorating the banquet rooms. Each month, Wendy La Brier, Residential Life Chair, visits Macdonald House armed with the most beautiful custom cakes and multiple tubs of ice cream to help celebrate the boys’ birthdays. As a fellow “ice cream scooper” I had the pleasure of helping Wendy on a few occasions and admired how she interacted with the boys and treated them as if they were her own. Every April, the most anticipated event of the year for the Parents Guild is the Red & White Gala. Thanks to the tireless efforts of Gala Chair, Bianca Harris, and Vice-Chair, Pam Merkel, for creating the magical “SAC Tartan Gala.” The record-breaking attendance and sponsorships are testaments to all their hard work. Gala guests were treated to an evening of great food, impressive auction items, games, and beautiful tartan décor. Bianca’s strong leadership and dedication was evident with the full suitcase of notes that accompanied her as she travelled the

halls. Bianca’s quiet determination and decisions led the team to great success. The Red & White Gala is our major fundraiser and the proceeds from this year’s event will support the Not an Ordinary Place Campaign. Congratulations, Bianca and Pam.

There have been many special moments celebrated throughout the year by the Parents Guild, staff, faculty, and other Andreans. There are times when the Parents Guild extends its sympathy for those suffering a loss or celebrating an occasion. Sarah Smith efficiently sent cards and flowers within minutes of a request; she managed the communications portfolio expertly, ensuring the thoughts and good wishes of the Parents Guild were extended. Thank you Cristine Prattas, our Treasurer, for your expertise and ensuring our books were accurate, our bills paid, and our activities stayed on budget. Cristine has dedicated her financial expertise and time for the past two years. She has managed the PGE accounts and made solid recommendations on our behalf. Interguild is an organization that brings together representatives of Parent Associations from other Independent Schools in Ontario who are members of the Conference of Independent Schools. This year, Sharon Ashton served as the SAC representative. Sharon enthusiastically and proudly represented St. Andrew’s at Interguild events and kept us informed of the many independent school activities. In conjunction with the first MacPherson Hockey Tournament to be held at the La Brier Family Arena, was a new event—Winter Activity Day. Susanne Bertolas took the challenge and succeeded in making this event a wonderful experience for all. The afternoon was filled with skating, hot chocolate, face painting, and crafts. Thank you, Susanne, for your creativeness and dedication. Recording Secretary Catherine Stringer’s attention to detail at each meeting is to be applauded. Thank you, Catherine, for your accurate recording of our meeting minutes and ensuring our rooms were booked. Sincere thanks to Karen Seto, Honorary President, for her support this past year. Although both of her sons Alexander ’13 and Zachary ’12 have graduated, she has continued to support the Parents Guild at each meeting and attend numerous Parents Guild functions. Karen, your dedication and gift of time has been very much appreciated. Karan McHenry, the Parents Guild Honorary Member and current Andrean parent of William ’18 and Caden ’21, is thanked for her thoughtful input, humour, and encouragement towards Parents Guild activities. Michele Fischer, Past President, a leader of many talents— thank you for your passion and dedication to SAC and the Parents Guild. Although your son Riley ’15 graduates this year, we look forward to your presence at future PGE meetings; your humour and creative ideas are always most welcome.

Karen, Susan, Iris, Rosanna, Susanne, Wendy, and Cristine retire from the Parents Guild Executive this year. Each of these volunteers has positively enriched the Parents Guild with their enthusiasm, ideas, and skills. It has been a pleasure working with all of you. As Lifetime Andrean members, we look forward to seeing you for years to come at the many SAC events. The Parents Guild Executive meetings are held monthly. For the past five years, I have looked forward to attending the meetings and the many activities the PGE organizes. These events would not be possible without the support of the faculty and administration, Food Services, Maintenance, Reception, and the Leadership Team. I have always appreciated the kindness and respect shown to us by members of these departments.

The Advancement Team and the Parents Guild Executive work together closely throughout the year, and the open-door policy and welcoming atmosphere demonstrate the wonderful relationship we share. Sharen Turner will often greet us from behind her two computer monitors, while seats are quickly taken around her conference table and many hands reach for the “candy bowl.” As Parent Liaison and Events Co-ordinator, Sharen steadfastly has her pulse on the PGE calendar, SAC policies, and traditions. Thank you, Sharen, for the commitment and grace you have continued to share with me and the PGE. Finally, Lenore Collis, Vice-President and incoming President: thank you so much for your support this year. Our first partnership began when I was Gala Chair, and our partnership quickly grew into friendship. Your support and dedication has once again been solid throughout this year. It has been a pleasure working with you, and I am confident the Parents Guild will flourish in the most positive and exciting manner under your leadership. The mandate of the Parents Guild is to enhance student life and foster Andrean community spirit. That spirit translates into confidence that continues to build each year. Watching our boys, and their friends and peers become thoughtful, polite, intelligent, and humble Andreans has been an amazing journey. I’ve had an incredible year as President of the Parents Guild Executive and I am grateful to have had this experience while both my sons were at the School. It has been very special indeed. I would like to make a recommendation prior to my departure as President: I believe it is fitting to change the tag line St. Andrew’s is “not an ordinary place” to “St. Andrew’s is “an extraordinary place.” Respectfully submitted, Angela Wood-Macgregor SAC Parents Guild President, 2014-2015

Treasurer’s Report The Parents Guild of 2014-2015 has had another successful year, allowing us to continue our support of the St. Andrew’s College community. The Parents Guild Executive ensured that we followed our mandate, as stated in our constitution, as is required for a not-for-profit organization. The Parents Guild’s main fundraiser—the Red & White ‘Tartan’ Gala—was a tremendous success, both financially and in a ‘friend-raising’ sense. With gross revenue of $261,031 and expenses of $121,759, the gala netted $139,272. This impressive total was accomplished due to the hard work and dedication of a large group of parent volunteers and staff. In addition to the gala, the Parents Guild raised $29,329 through Parent Guild Membership Fees, Homecoming and Alternate Revenue, which includes SAC Rack and Cheeseboard Sales. The Parents Guild’s expenditures for 2014-2015 fall into two categories. 1)

College events and annual operating expenses, including:Homecoming       

2)

Distribution of funds to scholarships, bursaries, and capital projects: This year, the Parents Guild began to honour its new pledge to donate $400,000 over five years to the School in support of the Not An Ordinary Place Campaign. Also, in recognition of actual tuition costs, the full day-boy scholarship amount was increased. The distribution of funds for this year is as follows:   

$105,000 to the Not An Ordinary Place Campaign $34,000 full day-boy scholarship $818 to the Outreach Committee

The Parents Guild Endowment Fund, established in 1991, is administered by the St. Andrew’s College Foundation. Each year, earnings from investments of the SAC Endowment Fund are transferred to St. Andrew’s College. The grant monies are used by the College to sponsor scholarships, bursaries, awards, and programs. The market value of the Parents Guild Endowment Fund for the year ended June 30, 2014 was $722,923 (June 30, 2013 - $640,801).

In closing, it has been a privilege to be the Parents Guild Treasurer for 2014-2015. I am grateful to have had the opportunity to contribute to the St. Andrew’s College community. Respectfully submitted, Cristine Prattas Treasurer

ALTERNATE REVENUE REPORT The focus of the Alternate Revenue position is to raise additional revenue to support Parents Guild activities and programs, which help to enhance student life at SAC. The responsibilities of this position include SAC Rack and the annual Holiday Sale, and some years, participation in Homecoming, in a fundraising capacity. The year started off in early June when SAC Rack collection bins were put in Reception and the Boarding Houses to collect First Dress clothing donations. After Prize Day, the bins were collected and sorted. Items were then laundered by the SAC Rack team or dry cleaned and mended by the Sewing Centre staff. In the summer, the SAC Rack room, located in the basement of MacDonald House beside the Sewing Centre, was cleaned and re-organized for the upcoming sale. The Sac Rack sale was held August 28 & 29, and September 2 & 3 to coincide with New Family Orientation Days. All our efforts, combined with notices placed in the School’s weekly newsletter, A Look Ahead, seem to have paid off as we once again had a very successful sale. This year, all blazers, grey pants, shirts, and ties were sent to be dry cleaned in an effort to maintain the School’s high level of deportment. After dry-cleaning expenses of $1,500 and miscellaneous expenses of $104, total profit over the three-day sale was $ $2,756. This year, rather than a Poinsettia Sale, it was decided it was time for something new. The Alternate Revenue team decided to sell unique handmade cheese boards. Posters and order forms were put up in the Reception area and Sharen Turner posted the information and order forms in A Look Ahead. The cheese boards were made from reclaimed barn boards and branded with the St. Andrew’s College crest. Sales for these beautiful boards were very good: 90 boards were sold, yielding $2,053 after expenses. During the months of January through April, the Alternate Revenue team, along with SAC President Angela Wood-Macgregor and Vice-President Lenore Collis, held meetings to devise a plan to streamline the SAC Rack intake process. Over the past few years, SAC Rack has grown considerably and thus generates a tremendous amount of work for the Alternate Revenue team. Going forward it has been decided to only collect and sell First Dress blazers, pants, and ties, and discontinue accepting dress shirts, PhysEd uniforms, art smocks, Warm- Weather Dress, and spirit wear. In closing, we would like to thank Sharen Turner, Parent Liaison & Event Coordinator; Parents Guild President Angela Wood-Macgregor; Parents Guild Vice-President Lenore Collis; and Sewing Centre Head Antonietta Calvano, as well as the many Alternate Revenue volunteers. Without their efforts, these events would not have been as successful. Respectfully submitted,

Susan Ennis Alternate Revenue Chair Iris Leung Alternate Revenue Vice-Chair

Communications Report The Communications Chair is responsible for correspondence and specific communications to the Andrean community on behalf of the Parents Guild. In conjunction with the President and Vice-President, and the Executive, the Communications Chair develops communication and public relations material. Throughout the 2014-2015 year, a number of communications were sent on behalf of the Parents Guild. As is always the case, the year held a variety of events; both happy and sad. On behalf of the Parents Guild, cards, flowers, and in-memoriam donations were made to a number of parents, staff, and Old Boy families. Specifically, 17 life events were recognized. A total of $489.91 was spent on communications, well within the $750 budget allocated. The Guild received a number of very thoughtful ‘thank-you’ notes in recognition of our efforts. This is my first term as a member of the SAC Parents Guild. It has been my pleasure and honour to work with such a wonderful and dedicated group of parents and staff. I feel even more a part of the Andrean family and I look forward to continuing to serve in the future. Respectfully submitted, Sarah Smith Communications Chair

Family Mentor Program Report The SAC Family Mentor program has been an integral part of the Parents Guild for the past 10 years. Working in conjunction with the School’s Admission and Alumni & Advancement Offices, the purpose of this program is to connect new SAC parents with current parent volunteers. These volunteers, also known as family mentors, offer a warm welcome to new families in order to help smooth their transition into the Andrean Community. The family mentor helps new families navigate through the information provided by the School. Family Mentor Volunteer Workshop On Mon., March 2, 2015, a Family Mentor Volunteer workshop was held in Cole Hall. The volunteers were recruited via email, word of mouth, and notices posted on Edsby and A Look Ahead. This year, a prerequisite was implemented whereby volunteers needed to have one full year as a parent at St. Andrew’s in order to be a family mentor. We had 27 volunteers attend. Eight of the volunteers were new to the program, and this year we had our very first dad! The role of the family mentor was described to the volunteers as they filled out profile sheets and signed confidentiality agreements. Breakfast was served, introductions were made, and each volunteer was provided with an information package. The Admission Office, Advancement & Alumni Relations, and the Campus Shop were in attendance.

New Family Lists The Admission Office provided the Family Mentor Chair and Vice-Chair with the first list of families on April 13, 2015. There were 117 families on this first list. We assigned a family mentor to each family. The new families were emailed a welcome letter and invitation to the Family Mentor & New Parent Breakfast, which took place on Wed., May 20, 2015 in Cole Hall. The welcome letter/invitation sent to all new families was edited and approved by the School. The family mentors were given a “sample” email, detailing exactly what they were to say in their initial email to their new families. The second list arrived from Admission on April 20, with 17 new families; list three arrived on May 4 with 13 new families. All new families received a welcome letter with a family mentor assigned and an invitation to the breakfast extended. New Parent Breakfast On Wed., May 20, 2015, for the sixth year in a row, the Parents Guild hosted the Family Mentor & New Parent Breakfast. Family mentors met and greeted their assigned new families and answered their questions. In attendance were the Headmaster, Admission Office, Campus Shop, Health Centre, Advancement & Alumni Relations, and representatives from Residential Life. This was a great opportunity for new families to speak to faculty, staff, and parents about the upcoming school year. New Family Orientation Day New Family Orientation Days are scheduled for Tues., September 8 and Wed., September 9, 2015. Following the lead of the Admission Team, our family mentor volunteers will be available to greet, meet, and answer questions for the families arriving with their son(s) on the orientation days. Marnie Sigmar was this year’s Vice-Chair. It was truly a pleasure working with Marnie. Sharen Turner, Parent Liaison & Event Coordinator, is a wealth of knowledge and always available to support and assist—a huge thank-you her. Admission’s Natascia Stewart and Wendy Coates are total pros, and I look forward to working with them again. An We have a great group of parent volunteers and this valuable program would not happen without them! I am grateful for the support of the whole SAC Parents Guild, and I look forward to chairing this program again next year. Respectfully submitted, Judy Davies Family Mentor Chair

Tartan Gala Report On April 11, 2015, the incredibly dedicated St. Andrew’s College volunteers wowed guests with the beautifully transformed Bellvue Manor Grand Ballroom for the 43rd Annual Red & White ‘Tartan’ Gala. Guests were greeted with a glass of champagne from the Tartan Lady, were able to take a spin in a Pfaff Automotive Partners racecar simulator, and pose for a complimentary photo at the UpCountry Tartan photo booth. We were honoured by the participation of the St. Andrew’s College Jazz Band, the Pipes & Drums, and the many helpful student volunteers who greeted guests at the door and helped with our “Crown Jewels” game. The evening featured delicious hot and cold hors d’oeuvres, the Loch Ness monster signature martini, a scotch bar, a delicious plated dinner, and finally, a selection of late-night snacks. MC & Company struck the right chord with guests, and provided music for guests who danced the night away on the always-full dance floor. We were incredibly fortunate to receive great support from the community in the form of sponsorships and auction item donations. Electronic bidding devices were used for the third year and we were very pleased with their ability to gather accurate data in a timely fashion. Within minutes of the auction closing, we were given a complete list by item and by bidder of all successful bids, ensuring a seamless checkout experience. The Gala is such a success because of the dedication of our amazing volunteer community at St. Andrew’s College along with the unwavering support offered by SAC staff and faculty. We are indebted to the many sponsors and donors and are proud to announce that together we have raised almost $140,000 to support the School in the form of scholarships, bursaries, and campus improvements. It was an honour and privilege to chair the Tartan Gala. I was very fortunate to have Pam Merkel at my side as Gala Vice-Chair. Please circle April 16, 2016 for the 44th Annual Red & White Gala! Respectfully submitted, Bianca Harris Gala Chair

Homecoming 2014 Report Unlike last year, Mother Nature decided that 2014 was going to be beautiful. Soccer was played on the lower fields and spectators could find volleyball matches in Bedard

Gym. The First Football and First Soccer teams played on the Yuill Family Athletic Complex turf field. Prior to the football game, thousands gathered to witness the grand opening of the La Brier Family Arena, with speeches and a ceremonial ribbon-cutting. What an awesome accomplishment! The Kids Zone was located on the Quad. Bouncy castles, candy floss, popcorn, a fish pond, and simulation hockey were just a few of the games and treats enjoyed by many. To enhance the experience, face and spirit-painting was artfully applied. The Lowe’s building kits were a big hit, as always. We had a record number of vendors who cheerfully set up bright and early for a day of shopping. The Campus Shop was also open for school sprit purchases. The decorating committee did a great job of bringing the “fall season” to our Homecoming weekend. Colourful mums, bails of straw, decorative ribbon, and corn stalks around the Bake Sale tent were beautifully placed. An abundance of signs helped visitors get around. The Parents Guild Bake Sale was a great success. It takes many volunteers to make this Bake Sale a day to remember. This could not have happened without their help on the day of and the days leading up to the event. Thanks again for all the wonderful baked donations. BeaverTails, located outside the La Brier Family Arena, was a hit for many. Set-up started in the early afternoon just in time for First Soccer and First Football. SAC Food Services provided a BBQ, chips, and pop. Outreach also provided a great snack area by the football field. Both Food Services and Outreach should be congratulated for their extraordinary efforts. This event is made possible by many selfless volunteers working behind the scenes beginning as early as June. Thanks to Michele Fischer for all her efforts with the Homecoming program. Many parents appreciated the colourful centre spread of the buildings/grounds – a nice keepsake for the day. The program was paid for by sponsors. Thank you, Sue Carter, for being a great partner; Homecoming 2015 is in great hands. Sue and I also oversaw the Valentine’s Day treats event. Every boy, faculty, and staff member was treated to a great selection of Valentine desserts during lunchtime. Our most heartfelt thanks to all the parent volunteers who took the time to bake and create spectacular treats; over 1,000 treats were enjoyed! It has been an honour to be the 2014-15 Homecoming Chair and I am sincerely grateful to have been part of a team with so many talented and enthusiastic volunteers. Thank you! Respectfully submitted, Liz Tsvetanov Homecoming Chair Sue Carter Homecoming Vice-Chair

Interguild Report The Interguild is a parent association network for independent schools in Ontario. The Interguild is an organization that brings together representatives of guild/parent associations of independent schools in Ontario, all of which are members of the Conference of Independent Schools (CIS). Workshops and information events are planned for all schools to participate in and learn from one another. We started the year in September at Holy Trinity School in Richmond Hill for the Presidents Breakfast. All parent association presidents and Interguild representatives from 45 schools in Southwestern Ontario were present and treated to breakfast. We also had an information session on the Interguild and a tour of Holy Trinity School. In November, the Interguild held a Suppliers Day at Upper Canada College. Suppliers Day is mainly geared toward Campus Shops. Angela Wood-Macgregor and Joanne Stock attended. In January, a breakfast session was held at St. Clement’s School in Toronto. The topic discussed was “The Changing Roles of Parents Associations and Guilds within the School Community." In April, Hillfield Strathallan College in Hamilton hosted a workshop called “Mindful Parenting.” Throughout the year, there were various invitational speaker events open to parents from all CIS schools. It was extremely rewarding working with Melissa Tackaberry and the Holiday Heroes program. Toys, clothes, gift cards, and daily essentials were donated by the boys, their parents, faculty, and staff for families throughout York Region in association with the York Region Children’s Aid Society. The PGE sponsored three families this year. The generosity of all members was overwhelming. My experience as Interguild Representative for St. Andrew’s College has been a great one. I have enjoyed the opportunity of meeting so many people from other schools and look forward to fulfilling this role again next year. Respectfully submitted Sharon Ashton Interguild Representative

Residential Life Report The Residential Life program is one of the many things that make St. Andrew’s College so special. Many of the boys live far away and SAC becomes their home away from home. The boys have so many activities throughout the year and celebrating birthdays is a monthly source of enjoyment. It is so much fun to watch them enjoy, learn, and grow. In September, the first monthly “Birthday Bash” took place in Mac House. All the boys look forward to these celebrations. Eighty boys enjoy themed birthday cakes and ice cream. After cake is served, they play games with a number of great prizes to be won. In October, Mr. Galajda held a room inspection and invited an Old Boy to be part of it. The boys made sure their rooms were spotless and decorated to the nines for Halloween. Many of the boys went trick-or-treating for Halloween. Four families volunteered to take boys from grades 6 to grade 8. The night was cold and wet, but the boys had fun and returned with lots of candy. In December, the Annual Macdonald House Holiday Banquet was held for boarders and their families. The food was fabulous and everybody had a great time. Many awards were handed out to our boys. There was a very funny video created by the House Captains to show what life is really like in Mac House. There was a musical performed by some of the boys and games that all the boys and their families could participate in for prizes. The banquet was fantastic and a lot of work was put into it. Birthdays continued to be celebrated in January, February, March, and April. Room inspections were carried out with the best rooms winning pizza and chicken wings. The final event was held on May 22 with a year-end barbeque. It was a bittersweet event for me as my role as Residential Life Chair came to an end. I would like to thank David Galajda, Director of Residential Life, the Parents Guild, and of course the students, for giving me an opportunity to be part of this outstanding program. Respectfully submitted, Wendy La Brier Residential Life Chair

Social & Welcome Committee Report So many events, so little time, but we always seem to pack the school year full of social gatherings! We are very happy to report that 2014-15 was indeed very social and successful! Social & Welcome maintains a close alliance with the Advancement team at St. Andrew’s, particularly Sharen Turner, Parent Liaison & Event Coordinator, to achieve our mandate of fostering Andrean community spirit. We held two Parent Coffee Hours in Towers Library in the fall, which were well attended by parents and members of the Guild. Headmaster Kevin McHenry and Executive Director of Advancement Scott Hayter provided a warm welcome to our guests. We invited Marnie McRoberts and Heather Tugnet to our first Coffee Hour in September and they spoke about their roles as Athletic Therapists. It was very informative and they enjoyed the opportunity to connect with parents. In November, Randi Berman and Matt Wyatt attended and talked about the amazing Arts program at the School. Many thanks to Grace Wyvill, Nancy McMurray, and their hardworking Food Services team for supporting our initiatives and all our events! The Parents Guild Executive Christmas Party was held on December 10 at Beacon Hall. Rosanna and I worked closely with Amir, the Food and Beverage Manager, and Chef Jeremy to select a delicious menu for our event. It was a pleasure to plan our Annual Christmas Party and to hold it at Beacon Hall. Over 40 guests attended and enjoyed a beautiful buffet, holiday cheer, and great conversation. The moment that everyone anticipates is our annual gift exchange and this year proved to be as enjoyable and entertaining as ever. On February 20, we hosted a wonderful evening – “A Night in the SAC Art Gallery” – in the Staunton Gallery. This incredible evening was attended by over 90 guests. It was successful because of the fantastic team that looked after every detail. Rosanna and I met with Grace and Nancy and created a menu for the evening–their expertise and guidance was invaluable. They also coordinated the bartending and serving of the wines for the evening. Chef Davide and his team did an amazing job with an assortment of plentiful and tasty food for all palates. Sharen Turner worked her magic coordinating all the artists, which included Old Boys, current faculty members, and Paul Mosey (The Lazy Poet). The Gallery was transformed (with many thanks to Alex Vella-Zarb for the exceptional lighting) and guests delighted in the magnificent art displayed and available for sale. The wine for the evening was purchased through Wine World Importers and we are thankful for the assistance of SAC parent Bruce Maclean for facilitating our tasting of the wines selected for the evening. Feedback about this event was very positive. Those who attended truly enjoyed the opportunity to mingle informally, stroll through the gallery, and view the variety of showcased art. It was nice to see so many talented artists who are members of the Andrean community. The Andrean community spirit is alive and well! Our work this year will come to a close in June when we celebrate the grade 8 and grade 12 graduates. Graduation gifts are beautifully wrapped by volunteers from the Guild and are distributed to the boys at their respective graduation ceremonies. Flower arrangements and other details for the dinners will be finalized in collaboration with Sharen Turner.

Thank you to Rosanna D’Angelo for her contributions as Vice-Chair; we will miss you next year Rosanna! It was a pleasure to be the Social & Welcome Chair and I enjoyed working with Sharen very much, so much in fact that I will continue in this role next year! Volunteer Report The 2014-2015 school year commenced with New Family Orientation Days (NFOD) in early September. New grades 7-11 students were welcomed on the first day of NFOD and grade 5-6 students on day two. There were many enthusiastic young men with happy, smiling faces, all excited to be at St. Andrew’s College beginning a new school year. More than 30 volunteers assisted on the two days of orientation. The volunteering parents were extremely helpful to the new families, providing direction and information to help ease them into the Andrean family. The energy and support was truly overwhelming and greatly appreciated. Volunteer forms for parents were available at New Family Orientation Day, on the School website, at Parent Coffee Hours, and other events throughout the year. We are very fortunate to have a list of over 280 dedicated volunteers interested in assisting with the many events held throughout the school year. Events  Homecoming: This is one of the largest family events on campus. Many volunteers baked, helped with crafts, games, and cheered for our teams. The weather was perfect and spirits were festive. This first all-school event of the year is always a great way for new parents to become involved.  Cheeseboard sales: New this year, beautiful handcrafted, reclaimed wood cheeseboards with the St. Andrew’s College crest were sold during the Christmas season.  Open Houses: Four times this year a team of two volunteers, a day boy and a boarding parent, shared their knowledge and experiences with the visiting boys and their families.  MacPherson Hockey Tournament: New this year with the opening of the La Brier Family Arena, the tournament was held at St. Andrew’s College for the first time. Volunteers were on hand at information tables at all arenas. This tournament is a favorite for the entire Andrean community.  Winterfest: In conjunction with the MacPherson Hockey Tournament, family ice time, A Great to Skate donation program, and family fun were included. Winterfest is soon to be a yearly celebration of all the best of winter.

Red & White Gala: Over 100 volunteers worked energetically throughout the year making the SAC Red & White Tartan Gala the most magical event of the year. This year was truly a very special night out. Family Mentors: Family mentor volunteers helped make new families feel at home in the St. Andrew’s community. This year we are pleased to have many new and returning mentor volunteers along with their hospitality and language capabilities to help the new families by answering questions and being available with ready information. Macdonald House – Middle School Residence: Volunteers helped to create a family environment by celebrating birthdays and special holidays throughout the school year. Special Events – General Help: Aside from all of the events throughout the year, we had many volunteers assisting Alternate Revenue with SAC Rack, Middle School Spookfest decorating, the Holiday Heroes program, etc. Baking: The scrumptious and delightful treats baked by volunteers for different events throughout the year were much appreciated by all, especially the boys for the Valentine’s Day treats prepared by the talented bakers of St. Andrew’s College.

The numerous volunteers for the active school and Parents Guild event schedule demonstrate the strong family community at St. Andrew’s College. The volunteers are a special group of dedicated people who donate their time and creativity throughout the year, always with smiles and enthusiastic energy. These tireless volunteers are true ‘saints’ at St. Andrew’s College. We graciously thank them for their generosity and support of St. Andrew’s College. Thank you! Winter Activity Day This event was established to coincide with the MacPherson Hockey Tournament and enhance family participation and highlight the La Brier Family Arena. This year, the event was held on January 31. Current parents, Old Boys, and their families came for a free skate and creative activities for the children. While the Old Boys took to the ice for a friendly hockey game at 3 p.m., the family members took to the Yuill Andrean Room and enjoyed crafts from “Whatsnotcrafts” including the creation of hockey pucks and collaged skating arts and crafts. Debbie Grasby Smith showed off her amazing face painting talent and had every child’s face painted along with arms and hands. We were fortunate to obtain Mike Penton from Balloon Art to create masterpieces such as monkeys climbing coconut trees, medieval crowns, and swords. He was definitely a highlight! Parents had the opportunity to watch the hockey game while their children were thoroughly entertained. For added pleasure, SAC provided cookies, hot chocolate, and coffee to guests. If

families wanted a little extra there were BeaverTails and poutine available from a food truck directly outside the arena. In the lobby, there were standup boards with life-sized hockey players (compliments of Tino Paolini’s beautiful artwork) where everyone could become a hockey player if just for an Instagram. We set up a donation section at the front of the La Brier Family Arena lobby for Skate to Great. This is a charity that offers less fortunate families the opportunity to skate and play hockey through generous donations of hockey and figure skating equipment. By the end of the day, there was a panel van full of donations thanks to the generosity of SAC families. Respectfully submitted, Susan Bertolas Winter Activity Chair
