This is always an exciting edition to present, as we head towards the celebration of Stamp Collecting Month in Australia, and a stamp issue produced with children in mind. The issue looks at representatives of animal species housed in Australia’s larger zoos. A visit to the zoo is probably the only way that most Australian children will be able to view these extraordinary animals. The stamp issue draws attention to the wonderful work done by our zoos to encourage conservation through education and international shared breeding programs. Before introducing our other stamp issues and their associated products I would like to remind you to place your order for the 2012 Gold Medallist Collection. The collection comprises all Australian Gold Medallist sheetlets produced by Australia Post to celebrate the gold medal performances of our athletes in London. The 2012 Gold Medallist Collection will add to your collection of Olympic-themed stamps. In September we release the second issue in the AAT series of stamps recognising a century of Australian exploration in the Antarctic Territory. The stamps are presented as se-tenant and show the explorers setting up camp after their arrival at Cape Denison.

A further stamp issue dealing with journeys, Road Trip Australia looks at Australians’ fascination with following the open road to any number of holiday destinations. It’s a big country and a road trip is a great way to see the sights and catch up with the locals at your leisure. We also celebrate 50 years of racing at the Mount Panorama circuit in Bathurst with the release of four stamps. The 6.2 kilometre racetrack is a public road for most of the year and is viewed by the faithful as the spiritual home of Australian motor racing. Thousands of enthusiasts choose to camp on “The Mountain” for the duration of this annual event. This year is a cultural celebration of dance, with half a century of the Australian Ballet. From its inaugural performance of Swan Lake, the company has developed its own unique style of performing classical and modern commissions. The two stamps bring to life the movement, elegance and grace of this much-loved art form. Don’t forget to keep up to date with all the Australia 2013 news by visiting the website at www.australia2013.com. Happy collecting

This is the second in a four-year program celebrating the centenary of the Australasian Antarctic Expedition (AAE), under the command of Douglas Mawson. The AAE left Hobart in December 1911 and returned to Adelaide in February 1914. The series comprises a 20-stamp sheetlet to be released in 2014 and made up of five stamps issued each year until 2014.

Issue highlights An attractive se-tenant presentation (one for each denomination) tells the story of the arrival of the expedition group at Cape Denison.

The stamps follow the same design style across the four years and feature a combination of images depicting the environment, the men, their work and their lives so that by the conclusion of the series there will be a comprehensive mosaic of this extraordinary feat of exploration. The overarching theme for this year’s issue is Arrival & Exploration and focuses on the activities of the AAE undertaken in 1912.

The stamps are presented in a strip of five in the minisheet.

The SY Aurora, carrying the AAE, anchored a mile off Cape Denison in Commonwealth Bay in January 1912. Materials and supplies were unloaded and building of the main expedition base began immediately. The Main Hut and outbuildings at Cape Denison were among the first structures to be erected on the continent and are recognised as Historic Monuments by the Antarctic Treaty Parties. 1741142 Minisheet Douglas Mawson at Cape Denison and an eight-man party under Frank Wild on the Shackleton Ice Shelf. It was from these base camps that the men of the AAE spent two years exploring the frozen continent’s unknown interior. Tragically, two of the three men of the Far Eastern exploratory party, Belgrave Ninnis and Xavier Mertz, died and only Mawson, near death himself, returned. Ninnis, the AAE’s dog handler, died on 14 December 1912 when he plunged more than 150 feet into a snow-covered crevasse with a team of six dogs and the sled containing most of the food. His body was never recovered. Mertz, a Swiss national, expert skier and dog handler, died on 8 January 1913 on the harsh journey back to the main camp. Mawson’s survival entered Australian folklore. A Memorial Cross, still standing, was erected at the main base in memory of Mertz and Ninnis. The photographs used for this issue were sourced from various national archives including the National Library of Australia (NLA) and the State Library of NSW where the bulk of the AAE’s images are held.

Issue highlights The large square shape and vibrant colours bring the road trip to life.

Australians and the road trip go hand in hand. On this large island continent, where long strips of bitumen connect towns and cities, a road trip is not only a rite of passage but a necessity. It has also become a familiar experience for many Australians on their overseas odysseys.

1740002 First day cover (gummed)

The road trip of today has its roots in the distant past, although taking to the tarmac in the 21st century doesn’t look much like its predecessors. The “grand tour of the 17th and 18th centuries was an educative tour of Europe for young gents from the ruling class, and, in preceding centuries, the pilgrimage was fuelled by religious observance rather than scholarly and cultural needs. Wayfarers of today are inspired by a lust for learning, adventure and freedom, and simply for fun. All said and done, then, the road trip is arguably still a pilgrimage of sorts, even if secular.

For many trippers, it is as much about the journey as it is the destination. This stamp issue adopts a light-hearted approach to travelling through remarkable landscapes and calling at some landmark attractions: the outback town of Alice Springs, home to not only the quirky annual Camel Cup but a notable centre for Aboriginal art and culture; Phillip Island, where Little Penguins (Eudyptula minor) parade from beach to sand dunes at sunset each eve; Port Arthur, an impressive reminder of our grim past; the Great Barrier Reef, the world’s largest coral reef system, which hugs some 2,000 kilometres of coastline; and Margaret River, known not only for its premium wines and gastronomic pleasures but for its barrelling surf.

The vast Nullarbor Plain, located on the Great Australian Bight coast, is the world’s largest limestone karst landscape covering an area of 270,000 square kilometres, extending 2,000 kilometres between Norseman and Ceduna. Two thirds of the Nullarbor is within Western Australia and one third is in South Australia. The name Nullarbor derives from “no trees”, but the plain is covered with bluebush and saltbush plants, hardy shrubs that are drought-resistant and salt-tolerant. Historically, the Nullarbor was used by the semi-nomadic Spinifex Wangai people. The Daintree National Park, north of Cairns, is made up of two sections – Mossman Gorge and the Cape tribulation – and is part of the traditional lands of the Eastern Kuku Yalanji people. Much of the Mossman Gorge section is covered in tall, dense rainforest and supports a range of habitats and a diverse assortment of wildlife.

1742002 First day cover (gummed) Stamp Collecting Month – an initiative introduced 19 years ago with the release of Australian Dinosaurs – endeavours to interest children in the hobby of stamp collecting and occurs in October each year. Australia Post staff members engage with primary school children and teachers, explaining the background to stamps and stamp collecting through a specially selected theme. This year’s theme is Australian Zoos. 1742003 First day cover (self-adhesive)

Melbourne Zoo marks its 150th anniversary this year and was Australia’s first zoo. Established at Royal Park in 1862, the zoo is now involved in numerous international endangered species breeding programs and conservation campaigns, including a captive breeding program for the Sumatran Tiger. Taronga Western Plains Zoo was Australia’s first open range zoo opening at Dubbo in 1977. The zoo plays an important role in education and conservation of wildlife such as the Black Rhino, native to eastern and central regions of Africa.

Since 1916, Taronga Zoo has been renowned for its care and presentation of wildlife. Visitors to the zoo are able to discover and learn about over 3,500 animals, including Giraffes. These amazing animals are found throughout Africa, south of the Sahara Desert.

Australian Zoos

28 September 2012

Issue highlights The 60c Sumatran Tiger stamp is larger than the others in the design set and features the Melbourne Zoo anniversary logo. 1742142 Minisheet Adelaide Zoo was established in 1883, and is home to over 300 species of exotic and native mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, fish and invertebrates, including the only Giant Pandas in the Southern Hemisphere – Wang Wang and Funi. Today only around 1,600 Giant Pandas live in the wild in south-western China. Perth Zoo was established in 1898 and is a favourite West Australian icon. The zoo has a specialist expertise in breedfor-release programs for threatened species and is a world leader in breeding Sumatran Orangutans – one of our most endangered primates. Australia Zoo is located on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast. It is the largest privately owned zoological facility in Australia, and is best known for its “Conservation through Exciting Education” pioneered by owner Steve Irwin (“The Crocodile Hunter”) and his wife Terri. Today Australia Zoo directly contributes to many conservation projects within Australia and overseas. Healesville Sanctuary in Victoria opened in 1934, and is dedicated to the conservation of native fauna including the Platypus, Tasmanian Devil and Leadbeater’s Possum. The sanctuary’s oldest animal, as well as one of its most popular, is Jess the Wedge-tailed Eagle.

50 Years of Racing at Bathurst

2 October 2012

1753142 Minisheet

The most successful driver in the history of the race is Peter Brock, and the Peter Brock Trophy (named in his honour) was introduced at the 2006 Bathurst 1000. Brock tragically died in September of that year while racing in a rally event in Western Australia. The race traces its history back to Phillip Island in 1960 when entry was limited to standard, production saloon cars built or assembled in Australia. The race was moved to Mount Panorama in 1963 and its popularity grew rapidly. It also became a means for car manufacturers to showcase their products – according to the rules the competing cars had to be identical to those available in Australian car showrooms. Initially the race was dominated by small cars, such as the Ford Cortina GT 500 and Mini Cooper, but following rule changes in 1967 requiring a minimum number of pit stops, the larger cars asserted their dominance. 1753220 Maxicard set of four

The famous Holden-Ford-Chrysler rivalry originated from this time, although by 1973 the competitiveness of Chrysler was beginning to wane. Under new rules introduced in the mid-80s local race teams were able to compete against foreign racing teams and cars, both domestically and overseas. But changes again in the 1990s saw the race renamed V8 Supercar with entry virtually limited to V8-powered Ford Falcons and Holden Commodores. Peter Brock debuted in 1969 but it was not until 1972 that he won his first of nine titles, which eventually led to his “King of the Mountain” title.

Pas de Deux

1744201 Sheetlet of 10 x 60c

The Australian Ballet marks 50 years in an illustrious history. Australia’s premier ballet company is notable for its classical and contemporary dance repertoire, and for the versatility, technical skill and warmth that its dancers bring to performances. Its full-time ensemble of dancers attracts both audience and critical acclaim, performing outstanding works created by both Australian and international choreographers.

Issue highlights An attractive checkerboard design is used in the sheetlet of 10 for this issue. The coin in the PNC bears the signature of the coin designer Aaron Baggio.

The Australian Ballet was formed in 1962 under the guidance of founding artistic director Peggy van Praagh. She introduced two key initiatives during her tenure: a ballet school, which opened under the direction of Margaret Scott in 1964, and continuity of employment for the company’s dancers.

The Australian Ballet’s inaugural performance was the classic Swan Lake, which opened at Sydney’s Her Majesty’s Theatre on 2 November 1962, closely followed by the company’s first commissioned work, Rex Reid’s Melbourne Cup. The Australian Ballet presents around 200 performances each year in Australia and overseas. It undertook its first major international tour in 1965, and its 33 tours abroad have compounded its well-earned and enviable reputation on the world stage. The Australian Ballet’s touchstone is “Caring for tradition, daring to be different”. In this 50th anniversary year it returns to its beginning, with a new production of Swan Lake being one of its five commissions.
