NOA launches ‘Canadian’ mural project

BARRY BAILEY St. Albert Leader

Although in its 18th year of existence, the 2015 edition of the Night of Artists is still breaking new ground. Partnering with the Mayors Arts Gala for the first time to launch the show on Friday, March 6, is just one fresh element producer Phil Alain is bringing to the ever-evolving NOA arts extravaganza. The second new element is an art project of a staggering scale. Not unfamiliar with expansive art endeavours, Lewis Lavoie, Paul Lavoie and Alain, have taken the definition of ambitious to a new level. In anticipation of Canada’s 150th birthday in 2017, the three St. Albert artists have conceived a mural project that rivals the immenseness of our nation. Over two years, the trio plans to create a mural that will include all provinces and territories and feature over 80,000 paintings and 150 individual murals that, when united, will form one gigantic mural mosaic. The mural, if connected, would be over 365 metres wide (4 football fields) by 2.5 metres high (8 feet). The three men have been creating murals as a team since 2003, after Alain discovered a Lewis Lavoie mural called David. The mural, the face of Michelangelo’s David, was made up of hundreds of paintings that Lavoie had painted himself. Alain then approached Lavoie with a dream of creating the Masterpeace Project. This ambitious idea was based on a mural bringing the world together through art. Shortly thereafter the Lavoie brothers and Alain began creating murals together, by utilizing hundreds of

An awesomely gnarly 80s celebration of shoulder pads, bright colours, neon prints, gaudy accessories and, like, a big-hair-themed evening will feature, like, artistic demonstrations, hors d’oeuvres, funky music, entertainment and, like, dude, an art raffle. The Art Gallery of St. Albert is celebrating the milestone 25th anniversary of their annual fundraiser on Saturday, March 14th, at St. Albert Place. Pity the fool who doesn’t bid on a selection of artwork and artistic pieces in the silent auction featuring Frances Alty-Arscott, Pierre Bataillard, Jim Davies and Peter Ivens. Don’t have a cow; the studios will be open so you can create a textured artwork from clay or learn about printmaking, choose a design by a local artist and handprint it onto a totally rad tote bag. Bring your own photo or choose a favourite 80s image and make a classic button. Take it to the max with local potters Julie Hage and Willie Renema who will collaborate with participants to create a clay wall-hanging with one of the novice potters eligible to win

the final piece. “The fundraising component is absolutely integral to our programs,” says Jenny Willson-McGrath, director/curator of the gallery. “We really count on the support of the community, and we would love to see some people who perhaps don’t visit the gallery frequently to come see us, try some hands-on art creation, and of course enjoy some great food and beverages.” The gallery’s roots were planted in 1985 by offering educational programs to St. Albert residents and students. Located in the historic Banque d’Hochelaga building (constructed in 1920) since 2002, the AGSA has been offering top-flight exhibitions for many years in addition to ongoing educational and community programs. 2015 will see the gallery expand their community programs to include the St. Albert Place Visual Arts studios. Don’t be a hoser; tickets are $30 in advance, $20 for Arts and Heritage & SAPVAC members or $35 at the door, subject to availability. Go to artgalleryofstalbert.ca or call 780-460-4310. The gallery is located at 19 Perron Street, St. Albert.

OPINION

WHERE IS THIS?

Don’t forget St. Albert

W

ell that was interesting! A tremendous amount of good is coming down the St. Albert pipeline. It is exciting, to be sure. It was a close vote, to be certain. On Saturday, February 21, voters took to the polling station (singular) in Spruce Grove to cast their ballot for the PC nomination for the Spruce Grove - St. Albert constituency. That quickly changed a few days later when the rumblings began mid-week that there was an error in the process. “It has been found that four ballots were cast by individuals ineligible to vote. The riding has been directed by PC Alberta to have this vote redone, as the votes for the candidates was very close,” said Carol Stewart, chair of the nominations committee. Good on them for quickly admitting the error and committing to a new vote right away. It was too close of a race with the difference in votes supposedly (and unconfirmed by the party) being less than that of the error. Mark your calendars for round two. On March 14, they will do it again. When you’re done marking your calendar, be sure to fill up your gas tank to the top, as the vote is happening again in only the one location in Spruce Grove. The constituency still has time to make this better. We understand that in the big world of math, more constituents live in the Spruce Grove portion of the riding than do St. Albert. Let’s call it a 60/40 split, which is why the vote is taking place there. We would like to point out, however, that 100% of the candidates are from the St. Albert part of the riding; hence, most voters would be from our city, one could safely reason. On busy Saturdays, families have so much on their plates in today’s world, it’s unfortunate that the constituency offers only one location in a large geographic boundary. That decision has surely cost the process many votes. It’s always been done that way. Who cares? Much falls under that category that is being continually changed to adapt to today’s world. Thanks to the error, though, there is still time for the PC Spruce Grove – St. Albert constituency to make this better. Add a second polling station in St. Albert, and show our portion of the constituency how much you value their vote.

Here’s a photo of a building or landmark around St. Albert. Can you figure out where it is?

Women have made strides, but we can do more

I

nternational Women’s Day has been observed since the early 1900s. It is an official holiday in many countries, including Afghanistan, Russia and Eritrea, and is now celebrated in almost every country in the world, supported by many of the world’s leaders. What started as a day to raise awareness of issues facing women—such as lack of education, adequate health care and safety—has now become a celebration of the progress humanity has made as a whole as we strive to achieve the heights we are capable of reaching. We are told by Bahá’í writings that: “The world of humanity has two wings—one is women and the other men. Not until both wings are equally developed can the bird fly.

My City Martha

URQUHART Bahá’is of St. Albert

Should one wing remain weak, flight is impossible. Not until the world of women becomes equal to the world of men, in the acquisition of virtues and perfections, can success and prosperity be attained as they ought to be.” To celebrate the achievement that women living in the St. Albert, Morinville and Sturgeon County areas have made to our communities, the Bahá’í community of St. Albert is hosting its 18th-annual International Women’s Day celebration. Five deserving women have been chosen with great difficulty from among the

many nominations sent in by friends, co-workers or family members. Women were chosen from a variety of categories, such as the arts, business, community service education, health, literacy, motherhood, peace, youth, First Nations initiatives and science. The awards night, being held this year at 7 p.m. on Saturday, March 7, at Cornerstone Hall, 6 Tache St., St. Albert, is where the five remarkable chosen women will be awarded and acknowledged. These recipients, along with all of the women nominated every year, truly illustrate where education, encouragement and opportunity can lead. of intelligence. During many times in history, women were led to believe to be even less than human. But we now know that the conditions in the past were due to women’s lack of opportunity. Being denied the right to education, women were able to advance only slowly. As we establish what has been revealed in the Bahá’í writings, “that mankind and womankind as parts of composite humanity are coequal and that no difference in estimate is allowable, for all are human,” we will experience the true benefit of a world where all are given the opportunity to reach their full potential. St. Albert Business Wins Provincial Award

Spruce Grove – St. Albert PC nomination vote to be redone LEADER STAFF St. Albert Leader

Due to an error in the original voting process, it has been determined that a new vote in the Spruce Grove – St. Albert PC riding to select the PC Candidate will take place on March 14, 2015. The initial vote had taken place on Saturday, February 21st which produced the original result that Rus Matichuk had won the vote and secured the nomination for the Spruce Grove – St. Albert PC riding. Kathleen Range and Neil Korotash were also on the ballot. “… Though I was surprised to learn of the error, the counts were so close

that the four ineligible voters could have had a significant impact on the results. Therefore in order to ensure a fair, democratic and transparent result I believe that PC Alberta has made the right decision,” Said Neil Korotash. It has been found that 4 ballots were cast by individuals ineligible to vote. The riding has been directed by PC Alberta to have this vote redone as the votes for the candidates was very close”, said Carol Stewart, Chair of the nominations committee. There are no plans for any other public forums at this time. All three candidates are letting their names stand on the ballot for the second vote.

Team Chiasson Inc. of McDonald’s Restaurants received the “Employer of Youth” Award of Distinction at the Alberta Chambers of Commerce Business Awards of Distinction 2015 ceremonies held on February 27. In addition, Team Chiasson was chosen as a finalist for the Premier’s Award this year.

Not just a man’s job: St. Albert women breaking barriers MARCIE GRAY St. Albert Leader

Margaret Williams knows what it’s like to work in a man’s world. On her first day as a mechanic at an Edmonton car dealership, she walked onto the shop floor to join her coworkers: about 20 men. “I was very, very nervous. But I was determined,” the St. Albert businesswoman recalls. It’s International Women’s Day this Sunday, and while we celebrate women who have forced open doors to jobs traditionally held by men, it has taken grit. Sometimes the door is slammed shut again; sometimes it’s opened wider. Williams says when she started at the dealership 35 years ago, the other mechanics were welcoming. “I did gain confidence, just by the way I was treated. They were very gracious to me. Even though they were watching me, I knew they weren’t criticizing. Even if I asked for help, they were always there to help me, to get my feet wet in the shop.” She might have been new to the shop, but she was an old hand around cars. Williams grew up on a farm in northern Alberta, where her father ran a garage to help make ends meet. “As soon as I was able to lift a wrench, my dad had me helping him.” She learned to do everything from fix brakes to overhaul engines, and eventually she earned her mechanic’s licence. Today, Williams, 68, owns MAR Automotive on Riel Drive. Times have changed, but there are still many barriers to break. A group at the University of Alberta is tackling science–trying to encourage more women to

pursue scientific careers. Female undergrads make up more than half the population in fields such as psychology and biology, but they’re at 20 per cent or less when it comes to engineering, physics and computing science. WISEST—Women in Scholarship, Engineering, Science and Technology—organizes events for students from elementary to high school, providing opportunities to learn about careers in science and get hands-on experience. A St. Albert teen, Grace Silver, won a coveted spot in the WISEST Summer Research Program at U of A last year. Silver, then 16, had been thinking about becoming a pharmacist, but working in a lab opened the Paul Kane student’s eyes to the world of research. “I got to work in the laboratory every day doing the kinds of things you’d imagine. You wear the lab coat and work in the fume hoods (clear ventilated cases that allow you to reach in to handle chemicals). And some of the things you wouldn’t think about, analyzing the samples on these big equipment pieces, that you don’t fully understand,” she says with a laugh. The grade 12 student is headed to U of A in the fall to study pharmacology and, thanks to her lab experience, she’s hoping to pursue research. Silver isn’t scared off by the fact she’s in the minority. “Entering a field knowing there’s going to be more men, it’s a little bit intimidating. But it’s also kind of exhilarating, thinking I get to be one of the trailblazers for women getting into these areas.” Back at her auto shop, Williams cheers on girls like Silver. “It’s all wide open. You can do whatever you please now. I don’t think there’s anything to hold you back.”

LEGACY

Advertising Editorial by Barry Bailey

Personal Care Directives and the Law

The laws of our nation are fluid and adaptive to the needs and changes of our society. Case in point is the recent Supreme Court decision giving the Government of Canada one year to address the legislation concerning the legalization of euthanasia or physician assisted suicide. Obviously this a complex issues on many levels. The moral and ethical questions of this legislation aside, as is often the case when a law is changed, the devil can be in the details. For instance, Personal Care Directives which outline the steps and limits of care you wish to receive at an end of life situation will require a serious second review. There are many scenarios and responsibilities that are addressed in a Personal Care Directive. Do you wish to be placed in an extended care facility, how much and what types of medication do you wish to receive, do you want to be placed on a respirator? With the anticipated change in legislation those responsibilities could now include assisted suicide. It can be a very heavy burden for one person to shoulder. It’s of critical importance to revisit who is named in the Directive to carry out your wishes. It may now be time to change the person you have appointed or to make changes to include a committee of people to deal with end of life decisions. If more than one person is to be appointed, the Directive should include a tiebreaking mechanism. These ends of life decisions could affect the size of your estate. If someone takes you off life support is your family still eligible for life insurance or is that considered suicide? Pension income could be affected and influence the decision making process. Should the executor of your will or caregiver be remunerated for their

time and service? These and many more issues are all good reasons your will and Personal Care Directives should be re-visited, discussed with your family and revised if necessary. Discussing your wishes with the entire family prior to a health crisis occurring will go a long way in ensuring your wishes are met and to prevent accusations of selfinterest or squabbles regarding limits of care. Keep in mind that one has to be of sound mind to sign such documents. “Baby Boomers have been asking about this in our office. says Stacy Maurier of Weary & Co., “To some extent politicians haven’t been listening, so the Courts have brought it into being. If you’re suffering now, the legislation needs to move forward quickly and that’s a big part of the short time line of one year. The legal profession has been reviewing these issues for some time in anticipation of this legislation being created. Different circumstances will address mental capacity, mental illness and even geography which could limit the scope of medical care available. An “end of life specialty may even develop in the medical field to help families and executors determine which path of care to choose and at what point. Changes to the legislation should come within ten to eleven months to meet the one year deadline imposed by the Supreme Court and could be quite restrictive in its scope to start, perhaps limited to specific ailments or conditions. The team at Weary & Co. can provide sound advice regarding Wills, Personal Care Directives and other legal issues. Weary & Co Law Office is located ate #400 – 30 Green Grove Drive. You can reach them by phone at 780-459-5596 or at www.wearyandco.com
