I cheated last year. I didn’t wear red shoes. Even worse, several men showed me up by prancing around in elegant crimson-coloured heels. The annual Red Shoe Gala is only a month away, and you can bet that women across St. Albert are sizing up their high-heel status, combing their closets for shoes in hues of ruby and fire-engine red. My closet is full of black and brown. I need to go shopping. The gala is a fundraiser for SAIF: Stop Abuse in Families. The St. Albert society provides free individual and group counselling to families experiencing domestic violence, as well as bullying prevention programs and conflict resolution workshops for schools and community groups. It’s a fun night to help a serious cause.

Last year it was all fun and games doubt I’ll ever be able to erase the for me, buying tickets to play games image scorched in my mind of Tim for prizes. SAIF is hoping to raise $12,000. Executive Director Doreen Slessor says, in terms of dollars generated, this is their smallest fundraiser; the gala is more about outreach. “It’s an opportunity to thank donors, the people and corporations that support us throughout the year, have them out to have a great time, and to let new people learn more about what we do and meet some of our staff and key people. And an opportunity to kick up your red heels. Local youth advocate against flavoured tobacco

GRANT CREE St. Albert Leader

Leadership students at St. Albert Catholic High School (SACHS) encouraged other youth to take action on flavoured tobacco during the school open house on the evening of Mar. 3. Hundreds of residents and their children visited the event that featured numerous displays and information booths. One booth was hosted by students and organizers of Flavour Fraud, a campaign sponsored by The Lung Association in Alberta and NWT. Their goal is to eliminate flavoured tobacco and menthol cigarettes in Alberta. According to statistics provided by Flavour Fraud, more than 20,000 Alberta youth under age 18 use flavoured tobacco products. They want that to stop. “I know people who smoke, and it bothers me to no end because I am just watching them take their life away,” said SACHS student Brooklyn Johnston. “It is so scary how something so simple like flavoured tobacco can control your life. I want my generation to be the beginning of something new—I want us to take control of our own lives and pass this on to future generations.” Flavour Fraud is a youth-led campaign in Alberta that’s working to expose the tobacco industry for targeting youth and to protect

youth from flavoured tobacco products, including menthol cigarettes. The organization estimates that about 6,500 Alberta youth use menthol cigarettes and that 6,500 are good reasons why menthol tobacco in all forms should be banned. “I’m here because I think what we should find a way to wipe out smoking in society,” said Mayor Nolan Crouse, adding that he “hates” the smell of second-hand cigarette smoke. “I had a sister who died of lung cancer at 50 years old; she was a smoker all of her life. I’m sure the day she was diagnosed with lung cancer, she wished she hadn’t smoked. She was 50 years old…. All of a sudden, it’s over.” Students and advocates for Flavour Fraud point out that despite the seductive coloured packaging, tobacco in any flavour is addictive and toxic. For example, a strawberry-flavoured cigar (compared to a cigarette) is considered easier to try the first time. It tastes similar to menthol and is easier to smoke because it soothes the throat and opens the airways, which leads to increased nicotine addiction. Bill 206 was proclaimed as law recently in Alberta, and it becomes effective on June 1. The bill addressing “Tobacco Reduction (Flavoured Tobacco Products)” will ban flavoured tobacco in this province, except for menthol cigarettes. According to Flavour Fraud, many youth

were disappointed that the bill didn’t include menthol because they believe it to be the ultimate flavour fraud. But they are determined to continue working with youth to protect them from all flavoured tobacco products. “It’s really bad, and now things are getting worse because they [tobacco companies] are making the packaging colours brighter and make everything look more like candy,” said Kayla Mariacci, a student at SACHS. “They are aiming for younger children, not Photo GRANT CREE, St. Albert Leader high schoolers, so it’s Flavour Fraud student advocates Kayla Mariacci (left) and Harley getting more serious. OPINION

I

t was another powerful community event for St. Albert—one that was extremely successful in their fundraising efforts with right around $315,000 raised and a few more dollars still trickling in. Our congratulations to the students, administration and families of all involved in the Bellerose Composite High School Bikeathon. 860 students on 77 teams participated in this year’s event, marking their 12th year. Roughly $1.5 million has been raised during that time, all in the effort to raise money to fight cancer and for cancer research. Their funds this year helped support the Alberta Cancer Foundation and Kids with Cancer. One interesting thing about the event is not just how they managed to raise a huge amount of money, but how they’ve made it into such an incredibly fun event. Teams dressed in themed outfits, big screen TVs were hooked up for playing video games, great food was provided by local St. Albert businesses and ongoing entertainment filled the 48 hours. It’s not all fun, though. There are very powerful and serious moments at this event. Heart-wrenching stories are shared to bring further attention to the horrible impact of cancer. It hurts hearing those stories, but it does help to bring everyone closer together in this battle. It also illustrates how impactful cancer is on all those around us and furthers the commitment to defeat it. Far too often it is not thought about until it directly affects us. This event brings support to so many in so many different ways. While Bellerose has provided an amazing example in event fundraising, they are not alone. Vincent J. Maloney Junior High School has their own mini fundraiser coming up soon. On April 23 they’ll host their fourth-annual Cyclebetes to raise money for juvenile diabetes research. Last year’s event raised over $42,000, and it’s sure to go up higher this year. Many of our schools and students are finding ways to have fun and raise money for important causes. Having fun while doing good is more than OK—it’s encouraged. It is heartening to see how excited our youth get to support these initiatives, and we’re again thankful we live in a such a great community.

n September 2013, our community was shaken by the tragic loss of young Thomas Wedman, who was killed while on his way to school. The event had a profound impact on people across our community. We were all touched in some way by this unfathomable loss. In response to this tragedy, council approved creation of the Safe Journeys to School Project to undertake an extensive review of school safety in our community. Last week, the Safe Journeys to School report was presented to city council. The report represents the culmination of over a year’s worth of work that saw extensive consultation with students, parents, teachers and community members, all with an eye towards ensuring

that children and youth in our community make it safely to and from school. Development of the report saw open houses take place at all schools in our community and the completion of over 2,500 surveys from students and parents. In addition, a comprehensive engineering review was completed on every school in St. Albert to identify challenges and opportunities to improve school safety. While it’s not possible to summarize all recommendations from the 864-page report here, key themes include promoting more

active forms of transportation, encouraging increased use of school buses, managing vehicle speeds, addressing winter safety, enhancing crosswalk safety, ensuring well-sited and planned school sites, optimizing school pick-up and drop-off sites and entrenching an ongoing commitment to school safety. In addition to the city-wide recommendations, the report also features customized Safe Journeys to School reports for all 26 schools within St. Albert as well as the two new planned schools. These individual reports have taken input from the open houses and engineering reviews to develop specific recommendations that address the unique challenges at each school. initiative has truly been a community effort. Similarly, the work of implementing the recommendations will also require a community. No single entity can make these changes happen. What will be needed is a shared commitment from the City of St. Albert, our school boards, the province, principals, teachers, parents and students, to take action to make our children’s journeys to school as safe as possible. I want to express my gratitude to everyone who has been a part of making this report possible. Completion of the Safe Journeys report represents an important first step towards improving the safety of our children’s journeys to school. Capital Partnership Program Changing

Photo SUN MEDIA NEWS SERVICE

Proposed Stars Donation At the last Standing Committee on Finance, Councillor Hughes brought forward the request for a council motion that requested $50,000 of the 2014 surplus be donated to STARS air ambulance to support the not-for-profit organization and recognize their on-going vital contributions to St. Albert as critical care first responders in our community. This was passed by a 5 – 2 vote and will now be taken to City Council for a formal vote on the motion.

The Standing Committee on Finance met on Monday and discussed the Capital Partnership Program. This program was approved by Council in May 2013 and became effective January 1. The scope, magnitude and complexity of the projects that are in development are less than what was envisaged to result from the Program. Consequently City Administration recommended that the term be changed to effectively stop the program from receiving new business case submissions after the initial intake date of March 31, 2015. This date was amended to June 1, 2015. The change in policy will now be taken to a City Council meeting to be voted on formally.

Fix these bad habits to feel better

SUN MEDIA NEWS SERVICES – Feeling blah, bored and tired? Well, if you’ve lost your get-up-and-go, it’s time to go find it! Common bad habits may be bashing your energy levels so kick the blahs to the curb with a boost from Stephanie Langlais, a Vancouver-based holistic health coach at somastasis. com. Get set to power up!

Bad Habit: You don’t exercise. “It’s a vicious cycle: You don’t exercise because you’re tired and you’re tired because you don’t exercise,” says Langlais. The Fix: Just do it! Regular exercise improves strength and endurance, promotes heart health, and feeds your tissues with muchneeded oxygen and nutrients, says Langlais. Aim for 30 minutes, four times a week to improve sleep quality and boost energy. Finish exercising at least three hours before bedtime. Bad Habit: You consume too much sugar. “Sugar causes your blood sugar to soar and then crash, leaving you with a major drop in energy and that sluggish feeling,” says Langlais. The Fix: Stop the crash-and-burn effect by taking in complex carbs and cutting down on sugar consumption. “Swap out sugar for a natural alternative such as Xyla xylitol (xylitolcanada.com). Unlike sugar, it is a complex carbohydrate and will help stabilize insulin levels which will keep your energy levels steady.” Bad Habit: You forget to drink water. Even slight dehydration takes a toll on your energy levels, stresses Langlis. “When you feel thirsty, your body is telling you that it is already dehydrated.” The Fix:: Drink at least two liters

of water a day. Flavour water with a few slices of fruit, lemon or cucumbers. Up consumption of foods that naturally contain water such as yogurt, watermelon, oranges and carrots, she adds.

Bad Habit: You’re overwhelmed with stress. “Trying to do it all comes with a huge downside,” says Langlais.

The Fix: “Mindfulness is proven to reduce stress, anxiety and fatigue, as well as improve sleep quality,” says Langalis, who recommends online mindfulness courses at mindwellcanada.com. “Massage therapy is also a great way to manage stress. Gentle massage actually increases the parasympathetic nervous system response to decrease stress and promote relaxation.”

Bad Habit: You sweat the small stuff, and want everything to be perfect. “Working harder and longer than necessary leads to stress and burnout,” says Langlais.

The Fix: Minimize perfectionism by practicing mindfulness in order to stay present, rather than ruminating about the past and planning for the

Bad Habit: You sit all day – and at night in front of the TV! “Your body doesn’t have the chance to release any energy or tension, leaving you feeling lethargic and sore,” says Langlais. The Fix: Get up and move throughout the day to fight off tiredness. “All you need to do is go for a brisk five minute walk once an hour. It will get your blood f lowing and your heart pumping which will in turn boost energy levels.” Bad Habit: You reach for caffeine every time you feel tired. While that cup of Joe may help you feel a bit perkier in the short run, the long-term effects of caffeine will leave you feeling more dragged out, says Langlais. The Fix: “Limiting your caffeine intake to one cup in the morning and avoiding caffeine for the rest of the day will not only help you sleep better at night, but also help your midday slump.”

future which can lead to burnout. MindWell Canada offers both personal coaching and courses on mindfulness.

Bad Habit: You skip breakfast – or other meals. Missing meals can cause your blood sugar to drop, and ultimately leave you feeling edgy and exhausted. The Fix: Aim to have three meals and two snacks per day, advises Langlais, to keep your blood sugar and insulin levels stable. Including protein and complex carbohydrates in meals and snacks keep energy levels stable, and are satiating too. Bad Habit: You’re short on ZZZs. “One of the most common causes of fatigue is getting too little sleep,” says Langlais. The Fix:: Maintain a consistent bedtime. “Going to sleep and waking up consistently at the same time - even on weekends - helps to regulate and keep your sleep/wake cycles more consistent,” she says.

Sound Hearing Practises One of the most preventable disabilities is hearing loss. Yet many of us, from a young age, treat this vital sense with little respect. Perhaps because we don’t realize how easy it is to damage our hearing. We live and play in a very noisy world. The relentless assault of sound over time can be very damaging. Prevention can be as simple as wearing earplugs and making hearing protection a priority in our lives. It’s important to protect our hearing at all times. Parents play an important role in educating and protecting their children when it comes to their ears. If parents are able to turn down the volume then they should. Even something as harmless as a child’s toy can be damaging to their delicate ears. Always turn the sound down to the lowest setting or dampen the sound with some tape. Lead by example by wearing hearing protection when operating noisy lawnmowers, chainsaws or power tools. Being proactive is the key to maintaining good hearing health. Have hearing protection for all family members and make it a habit to always use it. Hearing loss can occur for a variety of reasons. If you have any concerns about

the hearing of your child don’t hesitate to have them tested. Signs include a child asking for repetition when you’re speaking at a comfortable level or if they state they can’t hear you. Teachers may observe signs in the classroom as well. If your child is struggling in school a hearing test could identify hearing loss as a contributing factor. “In adulthood we should have a baseline hearing test on record, says Suzanne Douziech, Hearing Aid Practitioner at Anderson Hearing, “tracking changes in your hearing over time is especially important if you work in a noisy environment or are exposed to high levels of noise on a regular basis. The key to good hearing health is early detection. Should your child be diagnosed with hearing loss (this can occur as early as before the first birthday) many hearing aid manufacturers have specific devices for pediatric users designed with their needs in mind. Kids being kids, they are typically fit with the most durable and f lexible hearing aids that they can grow with plus handle the wear and tear. The device is housed in a strong, water resistant protective casing. Because children grow so quickly, the earmold

worn inside the ear canal needs to be replaced on a regular basis. Maintenance, no matter the age of the user, is important and should be done on a regular basis. Keeping the device clean and dry, wiping it down with a soft cloth and removing any wax or debris after every use is recommended. Some devices have a tiny wax filter to prevent debris from getting inside the device and near the electronics. These should be changed on a regular basis as well. At a minimum, annual check-

ups are recommended for hearing aids depending on the age of the hearing aid and the amount of daily use. Annual hearing tests are also recommended for anyone wearing hearing aids. To book an appointment for a free hearing test without obligation or for more information contact Anderson Hearing Centre at 780-460- 8045 or visit andersonhearing.com. Anderson Hearing Centre’s are also located in Edmonton, Sherwood Park, Spruce Grove, Grande Prairie and Camrose.

More than 860 students on 77 teams at Bellerose Composite High School raised more than $300,000 for the Albert Cancer Foundation and the Kids with Cancer Society at the 12th annual Bellerose Bikeathon. For 48 hours the kids peddled, played video games and encouraged each other to keep going. Cancer has touched many, and all were their participating for a reason. A staff committee coordinates the Bikeathon logistics including coordinating the food, teams, ride schedules and sponsors. The participating students handle all of the fundraising. From soliciting donations, to organizing bottle drives and the event promotion, the students are the true drivers of the event. To date the Bikeathon has raised more than $1.5 million.

Crashed Ice hits Edmonton this weekend

What you need to know before you go SUN MEDIA NEWS SERVICES – Hey it’s Red Bull Crashed Ice week ... as this most unique event takes over the Shaw Conference Centre and part of the River Valley this coming weekend. What is Red Bull Crashed Ice? Well it’s part hockey -- part roller derby -- part downhill skiing and man it is fast and it is ‘exciting.’ As stated on the Red Bull Crashed Ice website, “Edmonton will feature a one-ofa-kind track that will bring the sport to the next level.” It’s the first time it’s been in Western Canada and if we pack the valley it will return again. A specially built track (apparently ours is the largest in the world) starts on the roof of the Shaw and winds its way down to Louis McKinney Park. The event is is FREE to all and open to spectators of all ages. No tickets are required.

SPECTATOR AREAS During the last held Red Bull Crashed Ice event Feb. 21 in Belfast, Ireland, a handful of spectators felt “ripped off” after paying over $50 for a family ticket to the event. People complained to the Belfast Telegraph that it was “almost impossible to see anything.” In Edmonton, however, the event is free and spectators are encouraged to stand near the finish line at Louise McKinney Park and the surrounding area. For a view of the starting gate, spectators can gather along Jasper Avenue. Red Bull organizers admit that none of the viewing areas will give spectators an entire view of the track but large screens projecting the race will be set up at various points along the track and along Jasper Avenue, in Sir Winston Churchill Square. The races will also be shown at the beer gardens in Hall A, B, and C in the Shaw Conference Centre. Concessions will be available on the lower levels of the Shaw Conference Centre and our famous Edmonton food trucks will be on-site. Outside chairs and umbrellas will not be allowed in the Red Bull Crashed Ice event grounds.

SPECTATOR ACCESS All spectator areas are first-come, firstserved. If any of them reach capacity, fans will be directed to another area. The best way to get to the track is by foot. Access to the main spectator areas will be through the Shaw Conference Centre, but with such large crowds expected to attend the event, people are being reminded to use Grierson Hill or the Louise McKinney Park stairs by 95A Street.

People can also access the viewing areas from the south side of the river, via the Louise McKinney pedestrian bridge. Alcoholic beverages will not be permitted on public spectator grounds.

PARKING Parking will not be permitted at the Shaw Conference Centre, or along Jasper Avenue, from 95A Street to 99 Street from 6 p.m. on Friday, March 13 to Saturday, March 14 at 11 p.m. Public parking and parkades are available downtown, though commuters will be subjected to regular parking rates. No public parking will be available in the Muttart Conservatory lot due to a private event. People are being encouraged to take public transportation to the event. Increased ETS & LRT schedules will be operating. Regular rates apply. While ETS buses will remain in services, routes along Jasper Avenue between 95A and 99 Street will be rerouted on March 14.

SCHEDULE Red Bull Crashed Ice features two main nights of competition. Team Competition events take place on Friday, March 13, from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., and the World Championship final takes place on Saturday, March 14, from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. People are reminded to arrive early both days.

Scott Croxall of Canada, Dylan Moriarity of Canada, Dean Moriarity of Canada and Luca Dallago of Austria compete during the 2015 Ice Cross Downhill World Championship at Red Bull Crashed Ice in Belfast, North Ireland on February 21, 2015.

Edmonton will be streamed live online on the Red Bull TV app, at redbullcrashedice. com starting at 7:30 p.m. On television, you can catch the action on Rogers OLN at 8:30 p.m., followed by a replay at 10:00 p.m. on Rogers Sportsnet. The French broadcast will air live on TVA Sports at 8:30 p.m..

RIDERS CUP For the 2015 season, Red Bull Crashed Ice expanded to include the Riders Cup

series, aimed at making the sport more accessible to more athletes worldwide. Four Riders Cup events have been added to the schedule -- the latest Riders Cup event was held in Sherbrooke, QC, at Mont Bellevue on March 7 -- bringing the annual number of Red Bull Crashed Ice events to eight. Riders Cup competitors can earn up to 25 per cent of the points awarded at the four major Red Bull Crashed Ice stops.

Cyberbully law applied in estate case

SUN MEDIA NEWS SERVICES – Nova Scotia man Joseph Lee has been told to delete all online comments he made to or about his sister, Veronica Murray, after a family fight over their mother’s estate turn particularly nasty. According to the court ruling released Tuesday, Lee began a “progression of online abuse” after Angela Lee died in June 2014 and named Murray sole beneficiary of her home and assets. “(Y)ou are dead to me get your lying manipulative abusive (a--) out of that

(f------) house or I will send the RCMP,” Lee wrote in a text message to his sister, according to court documents. Lee began posting messages on Facebook and threatened to inform Murray’s employer, the Cape Breton District Health Authority, of her alleged misdeeds. He would not co-operative with the province’s investigators and refused to remove the Facebook posts, the court documents said. “I said my sister was a lying,

manipulative fraudulent thief ... The Cyberscan people said I really should apologize, so here goes, and it is heartfelt and sincere. I am truly deeply and sincerely sorry that my sister is a lying, manipulative, fraudulent thief,” he posted in October. “Mr. Lee repeatedly sent messages and made posts that he either intended or reasonably ought to have expected to cause fear, intimidation, humiliation, distress or other damage or harm to Ms. Murray’s health, emotional well-

being, self-esteem and reputation,” Judge Arthur LeBlanc wrote in his decision to grant a cyberbullying order against Lee. It’s the first time Nova Scotia’s cyberbullying laws have been applied to a brother and sister. The Cyber-Safety Act was passed in the wake of Rehtaeh Parsons’ death in April 2013, after the 17-year-old’s parents alleged she was raped by four boys and tormented after a lewd image of the attack was widely shared.

RCMP seek more women recruits for the role. When responding to a sudden death of a man in-line skating on Canada Day, she had to tell a woman who knew very little English her husband - her only family in Canada - was dead. Three weeks later, she got a card in the mail thanking her. In community policing, people recognize you on the street whether you’re uniformed or in plainclothes. “Kids would come up and hug me,” Hemsley said. As a parent she didn’t get to do the musical ride or work in the police dog unit, but she has no regrets. In fact, her son has joined the RCMP, working in Whitehorse. Recruits heard from Cpl. Shauna Lewis and Sgt. Whitney Benoit who work with police dogs at the training centre in Innisfail. Benoit was the first female promoted within the dog training section. Potential recruits heard from other women in the RCMP on video like Staff Sgt. Roberta McKale, who started in Slave Lake a week after the devastating 2011 wildfire. In her career she’s assisted in birthing a child and working with the Dene community after an elder died in a cell block. For more information on how to apply, visit www.rcmp-grc.gc.ca/careers.

SUN MEDIA NEWS SERVICES – Forty years after the first female RCMP officers graduated, the force is still trying to recruit more women to their ranks. Cpl. Barb Hemsley, a proactive recruiter, spoke to about 30 women on Saturday at “K” Division about a career in policing. The first all-female troop graduated on March 3, 1975. Today there are close to 4,000 female officers, about one-fifth of the ranks. The RCMP wants to hit 30% by 2025. This year, the RCMP wants to recruit 960 women, with a goal of 1,200 for next year. Hemsley, a Saskatchewan farm girl and youngest of seven children, wanted to become an officer after her brother-in-law joined the RCMP, posted in B.C. At the time she went to apply, there were height requirements she didn’t meet including - standing at 5-3 - her height. Now, it doesn’t matter if you’re 5-3 or 6-3 - you’re expected to perform at the same level. When working a Checkstop in St. Albert a man who didn’t want to give his licence and registration took off. After a car pursuit that took Hemsley past West Edmonton Mall the suspect took off on foot. Her size didn’t matter - she chased the suspect for three to four blocks, hopping over six-foot high fences. She spoke to the compassion required

The St. Albert Detachment currently has 17 female RCMP Officers out of a staff complement of 55. “We are very well represented locally,” said Cpl. Laurel Kading (above). “The numbers of female officers are on the rise and there is continued interest in recruiting females. It is a drastic change from 30 years ago when I began my career. It was rare to see a female officer and for large portions of time I was the only one in my detachment. Today, it is very common place to see a female officer responding to calls.”

Call it a bunch of B.S. if you like - just be prepared to pay a $150 fine SUN MEDIA NEWS SERVICES – Call it a bunch of B.S. if you like - just be prepared to pay a $150 fine for using foul language in public. Swearing is just one of the sins now outlawed in the southern Alberta town of Taber, along with yelling, spitting, gathering in groups larger than three, making too much noise inside a bar, and being outside after 11 p.m., if you’re under the age of 18. The specific rules aren’t exactly unique, and much of the bylaw

echoes what’s already in Canada’s Criminal Code. But in drafting their version of the rules, Taber’s council managed to turn the precision scalpel required in lawmaking into a clumsy chainsaw, where police can now issue fines and force people off the street for simply looking like they might cause a problem. “No person shall be a member of the assembly of three or more persons in any public place where a peace

officer has reasonable grounds to believe the assembly will disturb the peace of the neighbourhood, and any such person shall disperse as requested by a peace officer,” the bylaw states. Swearing in public is outright banned -meaning someone stubbing their toe and whispering a rude word under their breath is as culpable as someone screaming obscenities in the middle of the street.

“A person who whispers a swearword in public could go to jail for up to six months,” said Hlady. “That might be taking things to the extreme, but I think Taber’s town council already did that.” Taber Mayor Henk De Vlieger says any vagaries in the bylaw will be reined in by common sense. “Right now it’s wait and see, so we might try it out for half a year or so, and then see if needs adjusting,” said De Vlieger.

Special to the Leader

The most recent edition of The Tomato food & drink magazine unveiled the 3rd-annual Top 100 Best Things to eat and drink. And these four local St. Albert establishments made the list: Privada Wine and Tapas (21 Perron Street) received honours for their tapas charcuterie and bread plate. Feast & Lounge (150, 15 Perron Street) made the

If you’re a woman who owns your own business, or you’re thinking about it, you’re in good company. An Industry Canada survey in 2011 found that women held majority ownership of 16% of small businesses. That number may not sound significant, but a study the following year showed that 71% of Canadian women indicated that they would like to start their own business. On top of that, as of 2009, nearly one million women, or 11.9% of all those with jobs, were selfemployed. Those are some promising statistics. As last week’s St. Albert Leader feature on Women in Business demonstrated, St. Albert is home to many ambitious and fabulous female entrepreneurs. A few of those featured last week even have offices within our two NABI buildings, including our illustrious St. Albert Leader staff, and the new executive Director of the St. Albert Housing Society. There are many other fierce female leaders in the St. Albert business community. The stylish mother-daughter duo behind Cerulean Boutique, Jill and Kelsey Bulmer, have brought fine fashion to the city. Monjeloco Jeans owner, Nora Furber, has been featured on Dragons’ Den, and her store is a denim destination for shoppers across Canada. Within the NABI hallways, female entrepreneurs are proving their success in business. One of the most recent additions to our Campbell building, Elevated Robotics, is an innovative company changing the way we use UAV (drone) technology. Founder, Ellen Christopherson, has combined her passion for f lying, experience surveying, and technical knowledge gained from completing a master’s degree in engineering. So what does all this mean to you? With female entrepreneurship on the rise, you’ll have access to more mentors, coaches, and advisors. Organizations dedicated to supporting women in business are popping up, as well. And the government and banks have created funding and loan support specifically for female business owners. It means that there’s never been a time to sit down, write that business plan, and get going.

list with their breakfast cinnamon buns and badass biscuits. Just recently, Feast was transformed into Cerdo tacos + tequila. Jacks Burger Shack (130, 15 Perron Street) made the list for The BBQ Crunch burger. St. Albert’s Ohana-Ya (2 Hebert Rd #224) and their tuna tataki round out the list. The food scene has been very active in the past few months with many new establishments opening in St. Albert. We will highlight many of these in the St. Albert Leader over the next few months. St. Albert Leader File Photo

(L-R) Tu Le, Nathan Pratap and Jen Pulham are the team behind the new Cerdo Tacos+Tequila that was formerly known as Feast & Lounge. Feast’s cinnamon buns and biscuits (which Cerdo will still have on their Saturday brunch menu) were named to the Tomato Top 100. Le is also one of the owners of Jacks Burger Shack which was also recognized.
