Career ConneXions Career ConneXions program’s seventh year has begun! The Program offers support to Bombers outside the classroom to grow their professional skills and give them experiences to help them select their future career after high school. We took some time to talk to Aleth Rhoades, who is entering her second year as Director of the Program. “The biggest challenge I faced a year ago was that I had more volunteers offering help than I did students asking for it. What a great problem, right?! It’s been a blessing to watch a palatial shift happen throughout the last school year.” The “palatial shift” Rhoades describes? Sharing the Program’s current metrics might address this: • 226 students elected to use their lunch period to work 1-on-1 with volunteers. They walked away with resumes that spotlighted their best qualities and learned how to outshine other candidates in interviews with college admissions counselors and potential employers. • 63 employers offered experiences for paid summer internships, job shadows, and project-based mentoring. This attracted 351 students to apply. • In 10-months, 35 speakers were met with a roomful of Bombers, 75-100 students on average. In a single lunch period, students learned why these speakers chose their profession, what their interests were in high school, envisioned an average workday, heard about work-life balance, compensation ranges, and more. • 9 faculty departments and several student clubs were asked to help tailor the lunch period speaker offering. Rhoades outlook: “It was an exciting first year for me! I can’t wait to bring higher value experiences to students and volunteers. Their feedback is my ‘north star.’ New software to automate part of the program’s administrative work, student ‘podcasts’ to shorten the ramp-up time for Bomber interns to be more effective sooner; and, the continued support from St X. faculty, the Program’s 30 Student Leaders, and friends of the Long Blue Line…These are the ‘ingredients’ to better serve these young men!”

Parents Across Cultures Welcomes New Families to St. X! Parents Across Cultures (PAC), a volunteer parent organization that celebrates diversity and promotes cross-cultural understanding, hosted their annual New Family Welcome Ice Cream Social with over 300 people in attendance representing incoming freshman families. The event is designed to help freshman families connect with other incoming families and for their sons to start building connections and friendships. PAC set up various information stations to help parents connect and learn about important information pertaining to St. X. “One of the key factors in helping incoming families feel more of a part of St. X is connecting. PAC does a great job through the New Family Welcome in removing some of the anxiety and concerns,” stated Wayne Miller Director of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. “PAC is an extremely viable part of our St. X community and works year-round to ensure we are being inclusive.”

The student group Hands Across Campus (HAC), which is a cocurricular program where students acquire understanding and respect for their own and other cultures, was also on hand to help the students with peer-to-peer questions and to share their experiences as incoming freshmen. The incoming students also got their first opportunity to experience being a part of the Long Blue Line with the traditional LBL picture with St. X alums, current students, and faculty members who are also St. X grads. We are proud to welcome all the freshmen who are becoming Men for Others. Have a great year!

TriBombers State Champs The St. X TriBombers (triathlon) are wrapping-up another successful season, once again as Ohio state champions! The 2023 season also included a memorable and fun road trip to Milwaukee for the USAT Age Group National Championship. St. X triathlon was first organized in late 2015, which led to its inaugural season during the 2016-17 school year. The TriBombers are a USA Triathlon club exclusively for St. X students with a focus on youth development. The club continues to serve as a model for the development of USA Triathlon’s high school program and as a mentor to emerging high school clubs across the nation.

excerpts from the ARCHIV E S

Nicholas Kemper ’06, Archivist

For over 130 years, St. Xavier High School had no football field to call its own. There certainly was no gridiron at the school’s original location downtown on Sycamore Street, and no home games were played in the first few years after the relocation to Finneytown in 1960. Matches held at Xavier University’s Corcoran Stadium came the closest, but even that location was not a home field in any true sense of the term. All of that changed, however, on Saturday October 9, 1965. The sky was overcast, and the temperature hovered in the mid to upper 50s: perfect fall football weather. Gametime was set at 2 pm against visiting opponent Piqua Catholic. Special “footlong” souvenir tickets had been printed and sold, but despite the momentous occasion, no grand stadium greeted the players and fans. In fact, the home field was just that: a 120-yard field, sparsely patched with grass, located directly behind the school. Prior to the game, players spotted coaches spreading straw over the muddy areas. A new $2,500 scoreboard had just been erected, courtesy of Frisch’s Big Boy, and St. X had borrowed a few bleachers from St. Bartholomew and Summit Country Day. It was the best they could do.

Gift of Bill Fussinger '67

Jim Macke ’66, who holds the notable distinction of being the first St. X player ever to kick off at a home football game, booted the pigskin down the field to begin the first quarter. After that, the Bombers never looked back. Rick Reder ’66 led the way with a 55-yard punt return for a touchdown— the first scored by a St. X player at a home

8

game—and the onslaught continued from there. By halftime, the score was a merciless 39-0. Many of the starters sat out for the second half, but the reserves continued to accumulate points. At the end of the fourth quarter, the scoreboard read 61-8, and Coach Tom Ballaban’s victorious football team moved to 4-1 on the season. Following the game, a dance—or rather a sock hop in the parlance of the time—was held at the school; no doubt the students were reveling in an atmosphere of jubilation and ecstasy. Though not much of a contest and not much of a home field, the triumph was still historically sweet. Rick Reder, reflecting on it all, recalled, “It was an exciting first step for St. X football. Back then, I’m not sure anyone would have envisioned the modern stadium of today! It’s like comparing old St. Xavier on Sycamore Street downtown to the beautiful state-ofthe-art campus at 600 West North Bend Road. The Piqua game was a thrilling time, and it helped take St. X football from a cow pasture to one of the finest football fields in Ohio. Old field or new, we are all linked together as the Long Blue Line.” Special thanks to Jim Macke ’66, Rick Reder ’66, Bob Brichler ’66, and Tom Gruenwald ’66 for their recollections.

Vice President’s Message Tony Schad ’81

Companions on the Journey… As I walk down the hallways of St. X it is such a blessing to see so many delightful and wonderfully dedicated faculty and staff members who are Companions on the Journey for our students each day. Along those same lines, it is truly special to see the quality of people who also dedicate themselves to serving our students through co-curriculars such as athletics, fine arts or the numerous clubs and organizations that St. Xavier offers for our young men. It is a journey that we are so truly fortunate to be on with our students. While the entire St. Xavier staff ministers to students throughout the year in many ways, it is an equal blessing that our students have the privilege to experience the knowledge, caring and spiritual formation of three Jesuits and a Regent in formation who are in our building every day. Fr. Rick Millbourn SJ and Fr. Tom Manahan SJ are faculty members in our outstanding religion department. Mr. Alex Hale SJ is here this year as a regent who is in his Jesuit formation period. Alex teaches in our Social Studies department. Fr. Terry Baum SJ, who

coincidentally just celebrated his Jesuit Jubilee (50 years as a Jesuit! Congratulations Fr. Baum!) is our Alumni Chaplain and interacts with our students, alumni and parents on a regular basis. One of the benefits that happens when we have our Jesuit priests in the building is that our students are afforded the ability to attend Mass daily in addition to the six all-school Masses that are celebrated. As well as our Jesuits on staff, our St. X community is also afforded the benefit of having Fr. Walter Deye SJ ’66 as Rector of the Jesuit Community and a member of our Board of Trustees. Fr. Deye, is a former President of St. Xavier. Along with Fr. Deye, Jesuits, Fr. Paul Lickteig, Fr. Greg Ostdiek, Fr. Matt Spotts ’04, Fr. Eric Sundrup and Fr. Nathan Wendt are all Companions on the Journey of St. Xavier as members of the St. Xavier Board of Trustees. Why do I relay this information? There are many ways to be companions to our students’ journeys. Like our faculty, staff and the Jesuits who impact the young men of St. Xavier so very much, so do the names of the people you will read in this magazine. Those who financially support our mission here at St. Xavier are very much a part of the journey our young men are on. Young men come to St. Xavier because the experience afforded them is incredible. That experience happens because you are Companions on the Journey with them. Please keep our students in your prayers and know that you, our benefactors, are in our prayers too. AMDG

Faculty Focus Mr. George Beluan

Mathematics faculty member George Beluan is a member of the St. Xavier Class of 1991. He graduated from Miami University with a BS in Math in 1995 and from the University of Cincinnati with an MS in Math in 1997. George was hired by former faculty member Dick Piening in April of 1997 to start in the fall of 1997. Deirdre, George’s wife of 23 years, graduated from Walnut Hills High School and is currently the interim CEO of the Health Collaborative. George’s eldest son Andy ’22 is majoring in Science-Business on the PreMed track at Notre Dame and his youngest son Brendan ’25 is a current junior involved in swimming, IFTJ, and Community Service. George has many family members in the Long Blue Line besides his sons. Members include Gerry Beluan (Brother) ’86, Steve Caruso (Brother-in-law) ’83, Sean Kelley (Brother-in-law) ’83, Noah Kelley (Nephew) ’14, Aidan Kelley (Nephew) ’16, Harris Caruso (Nephew) ’21, Weston Caruso (Nephew) ’24, Carson Moore (Nephew) ’22 and Juan Chuegan (Nephew) ’22. In the past, George has been the St. Xavier Faculty Association President and served on the Compensation Committee, a JV Golf coach, part of the first group of instructional coaches, served on the Academic Board, served as the moderator of Hands Across the Campus, been a member of the Faculty Life sub-committee of the Board of Trustees and was a local Professional Development Committee member. Currently, George is the coordinator for the American Mathematics Competition (AMC), the annual competitive math test about 200 of our students participate in each year, and also in charge of the team competing in the Math Bowl at the University of Cincinnati. He is actively involved in admissions events and initiatives, serves as a Service and Immersion Trip Chaperone and leads his homeroom to successful Canned Food Drives each year.

Why did you decide to bring your gifts to St. Xavier?

and all Jesuit institutions. It’s incredibly rewarding knowing that our students are in the care of colleagues who take a genuine interest in who they are as Brendan ’25, Deirdre, George ’91 and Andy ’22 Beluan individuals and interested in their development into young men. I also feel the same level of care as an adult in this community. I’m surrounded by supportive teachers in the math department who are more like family than co-workers. I work with administrators who not only provide us with everything we need to do our jobs effectively in the classroom, but they also take an interest in our well-being and self-care. This is a great place to come to each morning.

You are heavily involved in the Canned Food Drive and the Mission Collection each year. Why is this so important to you and your students? One of my former students once told me that I have an uncanny ability to take a group of students who come from all walks of life, from different grade schools, with different interests and turn them into a large group of friends. The secret to doing this is to get them all to buy into, and to get heavily involved and invested in, a common goal. The Canned Food Drive and the Mission Collection are two school-wide initiatives that are so central to our Mission. With strong senior leadership and a consistent message of “this is who we are and what we do at X High”, it becomes part of the fabric of the homeroom. The hope is that this attitude carries over into their young adult lives and serving and helping others

My time at X High as a student had a profound effect on me. I was taught by some of the greats. To name a few, Sally Vonderbrink, Dick Piening, Lee Yeazell, Wally Koral, Steve Rasso, Geza Parmentier, Rich Fujimoto, and Senora Holman. Some of my closest friends to this day are guys I met in the hallways of this building. While in college, I shifted gears away from the pre-med track. I had some experiences while at Miami University working with high school students and I spent a lot of time working with students as a graduate assistant at the University of Cincinnati when I was getting my Masters in math. The thought of teaching kept sneaking up on me. What finally sealed the deal for me was when I served as a teacher and later as the Dean of Faculty of the Summerbridge Cincinnati program that was hosted at St. Xavier. Being in the classroom every day with students teaching math felt like what I was called to do. I applied to high schools far and wide, from New York to San Francisco, armed with two degrees in pure mathematics and no teaching certificate. Out of the 70 schools I sent a resume to, only one was in Cincinnati. It was the seventh of seven offers that I received. Although I was looking to move out of the Greater Cincinnati area, I could not pass up the opportunity to become a

X-tra Notes (anything else we should know about you?)

What is the most rewarding thing about being part of the St. Xavier community?

When you’ve taught for 26 years, you have thousands of former students. I run into former students all the time all over the city and even while I’m traveling. It’s one of the best parts of being a teacher. I would like to tell students that when you run into a former teacher, say hello. It will make our day.

The Latin phrase “cura personalis”, meaning care for the individual or care for the whole person, is something that our faculty and staff take seriously at St. Xavier

How would you describe the St. Xavier Advantage? From the moment these young men walk into our doors as freshmen, they are surrounded by people, both adults and students alike, who expect and accept nothing short of excellence from them. This excellence can come in any form, academic, service to others, the arts, athletic, or their personal faith. Over the years, I’ve seen the entire school celebrate and recognize students who’ve achieved in academics, athletics, Irish dancing, Guitar Hero, rubix cube solving, theater performances, service in the community, Mock Trial, creative writing, and other talents. When the students witness this and become a part of this, they start to understand that even if I’m not as great as this other student at one thing, I have a lot to offer this community myself with the strengths that I bring to the table. Everybody deserves to experience the feeling of self-worth, and I think our school does a great job at fostering that.

The second bucket consists of increasing tuition assistance, and in turn, continuing to make St. Xavier High School more affordable for students who qualify and will become the next generation of leaders. Thanks to the example of Harry and Linda Fath, we have made good strides toward that goal. The third bucket of the campaign will fund the renovation goals and strategies. Dennis M. and Lois A. Doyle Family Foundation Endowment Seedling Program Denny and Lois Doyle believe that a strong education leads to many positive and wonderful things. They were products of a Catholic education and entrusted St. Xavier High School with the education of their three sons (Brian ’89, Mark ’91 and David ’98). The Doyle Foundation has set up a matching seedling gift program that encourages endowment giving to St. Xavier High School. In fact, 118 of the endowments listed in this magazine have been encouraged with a matching gift from the Doyle Family Foundation. Key Components to the Program •

An individual or group makes an initial gift of $10,000 or more plus agrees to make additional gifts of $10,000 or more for the following three years. A planned estate gift is also designated to St. Xavier High School for the Named Endowment.

The Doyle Foundation contributes an addition $10,000 to the established fund!

To date the Doyle Family Foundation has contributed more than $1.8 Million to help establish endowed funds now valued at more than $17.3 Million! For more information regarding the Doyle Foundation Matching Gift Program at St. Xavier High School please contact Vice President for Advancement Tony Schad at Tschad@stxavier.org or by phone at 513-618-3228.

Xavier Scholarship Granting Organization The Xavier Scholarship Granting Organization (Xavier-SGO ) might be the most exciting tax news you’ve ever received! If you pay Ohio income tax, you now have the opportunity to pay less while supporting our Jesuit mission. Xavier-SGO has been certified by the State of Ohio as a Scholarship Granting Organization. The Ohio income tax credit (yes, tax credit!) is limited to $750 per individual or $1,500 per joint Ohio tax return. Please join us in this exciting new opportunity. For more than 190 years, your gifts to St. Xavier have provided tuition assistance for academically eligible young men who might not otherwise be able to afford a St. Xavier High School education and go into the world as Men for Others. We now join with Xavier Jesuit Academy (opening in August 2024) to give grade school children the same opportunities for a Catholic, Jesuit education. We hope you will take advantage of this new Ohio Income Tax Credit and help us. Thank you for your support! Please join us in this exciting new opportunity! Student Spotlight Andrew Weber ’24

Senior Andew Weber embodies the theme of the year – Companions on the Journey. Not only is he a three-sport athlete: football (Captain), basketball, and baseball. He is also involved with National Honor Society and the World Language Honor Society in Spanish. He is a student ambassador and is part of the student club St. Xavier United. This club is designed to build a community of brothers, a place where any student can come and talk and make friends. Together they focus on building social skills and needed life skills. Why did you decide to attend St. Xavier? I attended I.H.M. (Immaculate Heart of Mary) which is located in Anderson. I decided to attend St. Xavier because I grew up going to the football games and I loved the community aspect. I knew St. X was a great academic school and wanted to get the highest level of academics in the city. I liked the campus and all of the facilities, along with how the schools schedule was structured. What advice would you give to a freshman? The advice that I would give a freshman is to definitely get involved in sports, clubs, theater, service etc. right away. There are so many amazing opportunities at this school and make the most of them while you can. Also, at first the academics may seem overwhelming and you may feel defeated, but do not be afraid to reach out to your teachers.

They want you to succeed but you have to reach out. Another piece of advice I have is to get into a routine freshman year. This will allow you to feel organized, comfortable, and less stressed. What is your favorite memory/experience at St. X? My favorite memory/experience of St. X so far is Friday Night Lights and playing in RDI Stadium. I think there is no better feeling than running out with the team on Friday nights in front of a sold-out home crowd. What is the St. Xavier Advantage? The St. Xavier advantage is our close-knit community and the alumni that give back. Inside the building I really feel like the students here care for each other and the older guys take care of the underclassmen. The alumni are a huge part of the St. X Advantage in the real world because they are literally all over the country and the world. The Long Blue Line- we take care of each other.
