A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

Dear Graduates and Friends of St. Francis Prep: As I make the transition from Principal to President of St. Francis Prep, I find myself working more closely with our loyal alumni and friends as we start to write the next chapter in the Prep’s long and impressive history. As you know by now, Mr. Patrick McLaughlin has assumed the role of Principal, and he is now overseeing the academic and day-to-day operations of the school.

This new administrative model represents a natural progression for the Prep, as we build on our past success and prepare the school for The Next 150.

Our focal points continue to be the Middle States re-accreditation process (the mid-point review is coming up and we are very much on target), our important “Master Plan for Modernization” and The Campaign for St. Francis Prep which will run through fiscal year 2015. (See the campaign summary report on pages 34-35.) Master Plan Phase III calls for the construction of a new, stateof-the art Science and Music Complex and we still hope to break ground this coming June 2014.

As a result of this step-by-step process which began during our Sesquicentennial, the dream of vastly improved facilities is slowly but surely becoming a reality thanks to the foresight of the Board of Trustees, the generosity of our alumni and benefactors, and the help and cooperation of our dedicated faculty and staff.

Thankfully, these plans continue to be very viable (and necessary) as the Prep’s enrollment remains quite stable. Despite some economic uncertainty, increased competition, and a smaller “pool” of eighth-grade students, the Prep is still the largest private Catholic high school in the country--with a diverse student population of more than 2600 young men and women who are truly representative of the great “melting pot” that is New York City—especially the borough of Queens.

Most importantly, more than 99% of our seniors go on to college each and every year, including many of the most prestigious colleges and universities in the country, and the members of our most recent Class of 2013 received over $96 million in scholarship offers. This speaks volumes

about the high quality, value-oriented education that we continue to provide for our students—in keeping with our Franciscan mission.

So you should take great pride in the knowledge that your financial support helps in various and meaningful ways that have a direct and lasting effect on young lives (as well as our day-to day operations). Among other things, you help us keep tuition at moderate levels for students and families who otherwise may not be able to afford a St. Francis Prep education. And after years of planning, our facilities continue to be transformed right before our very eyes thanks in large measure to the generosity of benefactors like you.

Consequently, we remain very optimistic about the Prep’s future for a variety of good reasons, including the fact that we are so fortunate to have your support and the support of so many of your fellow graduates and friends each year.

Accordingly, in these pages you will find a listing of all 2012-13 fiscal year contributions, with donors (thru August 31st) recognized alphabetically within each giving category and also by graduating class. You will also see information about our named scholarship fund program, opportunities for planned giving, plus the upcoming alumni event calendar.

In closing, I would ask that you please continue to keep St. Francis Prep in your thoughts and prayers. Thank you again for everything you do for this wonderful school.

PATHWAY TO ST. FRANCIS

The Pathway to St. Francis is an ongoing project which affords alumni and friends of Prep the chance to memorialize friends, family, and loved ones by purchasing paving stones and other memorials that will remain on permanent display in front of the school.

PLANNED GIVING SOCIETY Brother Ralph Clifford served as Treasurer for 35 years prior to his untimely passing in the Fall of 2002. His fiscal policies helped keep St. Francis Prep on sound financial footing. The Prep honored Brother Ralph’s memory in several ways. The Prep’s Auditorium was named in his memory and a special “giving society” was established in his name for alumni, parents, and friends who include St. Francis Prep in their estate plans. Members of this giving society are invited each year to the President’s Dinner and will be afforded permanent recognition as members of The Brother Ralph Clifford Planned Giving Society. Planned Giving Society, which honors all those who have made a bequest or other planned gift in support of St. Francis Prep. The following are a few benefits of Planned Gifts: • Provide lifetime income for you and, if you wish, another beneficiary • Give you substantial federal income-tax charitable deduction • Enable you to turn low-yielding assets into higher income stream • Reduce or eliminate taxes on capital gains • Eliminate or reduce federal estate taxes Bequests This is a gift made by a provision in one’s will naming St. Francis Prep as a beneficiary. This can help reduce estate taxes.

Life Insurance and Retirement Plans If you own a life insurance policy that is no longer needed, it can be a perfect vehicle for a charitable gift! To receive a charitable deduction, name St. Francis Prep as both the owner and the beneficiary of the policy. If the policy has cash value, you can take a charitable deduction approximately equal to the cash value at the time of the gift.

Trusts and Wills All or part of what remains after loved ones have been provided for can be put in trust or directed for the use of St. Francis Prep. Assets can be put aside also for a limited period of time and then returned to the donor.

Unit Trusts A Unit Trust has a fixed percentage rate of return on the initial principal value.

Benefits include an income tax deduction, the avoidance of capital gains tax (when appreciated securities are used), as well as an estate tax reduction. St. Francis Prep requires a minimum gift of $25,000 to establish this.

Charitable Gift Annuity This gifts allows the donor to receive benefits for his/her lifetime and to qualify for charitable tax deduction.

This form of support is attractive when one has highly appreciated assets. St. Francis Prep requires a minimum gift of $100,000 to establish this.

A Charitable Remainder Trust This form of support transfers assets to a trustee, who then manages the trust and pays an income back to the donor for life or for a specific time period.

When the trust terminates, the remainder passes to St. Francis Prep.

St. Francis Prep offers a variety of rewarding planned-giving options.

The Campaign for St. Francis Prep Several years ago, the Franciscan Brothers, the Prep’s Trustees and other leaders began laying the groundwork to help insure a long, prosperous and productive future for the school. From this emerged a “Capital Improvement Program” designed to transform Prep into a truly modern, twenty-first century educational facility in several phases. The first two phases of this program were completed in 2010 and 2011 respectively. Phase III will be in 2014-15.

Daniel Thomas Apicella, Class of 2000, was a standout basketball player through his years at Prep. Accomplishments Dan had on the basketball court were eclipsed by the high level of character Dan displayed in all aspects of his life. His generosity and giving nature embodied the Franciscan spirit, so it came as no surprise to those who knew him when Dan chose to become an EMT. This fund was established in memory of one of Prep’s 9-11 heroes, Michael Brennan FDNY, Class of 1991, who was working with Engine Co. 54, Ladder Co. 4, Battalion 9 when he responded to the call that fateful day.

“Mikey B” played football at the Prep, and he was an avid snowboarder and surfer who lived in Woodside. His family, especially his older brother Brian Brennan ‘87 and his mother Eileen Walsh, along with classmates and friends, have supported this fund since its inception.

George Dillman ‘00, an employee of Con Edison, died in an explosion as he was carrying out routine electrical maintenance work in a manhole in 2008. He was 26 years old. His colleagues at Con Ed, along with Dillman family members and friends organized a golf outing in his memory. Each year, the proceeds of the golf outing as well as other donations received throughout the year are directed into the building of the George Dillman ‘00 Memorial Scholarship Fund at St. Francis Prep.

Vincent Giammona was a very high-spirited and well-liked student who participated in the Track program while at Prep. In 2001, he was looking forward to celebrating his 40th birthday by running his first NYC marathon, but he was killed on September 11th along with 343 of his FDNY colleagues in the greatest rescue effort in the history of the department. He was posthumously promoted to Fire Captain. The scholarship award recipient must be a current member of the SFP Track & Field Team. Preference may be given to sons or daughters of Firefighters, Police Officers and/or Military personnel.

The Michael F. Lynch Scholarship Fund was established by his brother and sisters through the generous support of his extended family and friends. “Big Mike” as he was fondly known was last seen rescuing people from an elevator in the South Tower of the World Trade Center after the attacks on September 11, 2001. Michael and his seven siblings were raised by his parents, Catherine and Danny (SFP Class of ‘47), in Flushing, Queens. In 1986, Big Mike became a proud graduate of St. Francis Prep where he had studied, played basketball and made many friends. After graduation he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from SUNY Albany and went on to become a member of the FDNY (Engine 54, Ladder 4,Battalion 9). Big Mike loved sports, the fire department and St. Francis Prep but was truly devoted to his wife, Denise, and two sons, Michael and Jack. This scholarship fund is designed to keep Michael’s memory alive in the spirit of the Franciscan traditions by enabling deserving students to attend his beloved alma mater.

This fund was established in 2007 in honor of the long-time track coach at Prep, Jim McHugh, and his late wife, Bernice. Track alumni and members of the Class of 1957 came together in 2007 under the leadership of Ed Kennedy ’57 and Dan Corry ’58 to raise the money from classmates and track teammates to initiate this fund, and they continue to oversee the annual selection of each scholarship recipient (a senior track athlete in good academic standing who has financial need) as well as ongoing fund-raising efforts.

John “Zeek” Marchassalla was the captain of the SFP 1978 CHSFL City Division Championship football team. He was named the head coach of the JV team in 1981 and coached what went on to become, arguably, one of the best teams to ever play at the Prep. John was an extraordinary individual who was loved and admired by many. After his untimely passing, legions of Prep alumni rallied to establish this scholarship fund in his memory.

In 1992, he received a special citation for rescuing passengers from a jet that kidded off a runway at LaGuardia Airport. The Mary and Vincent O’Connor Scholarship is presented each year to one or more Prep football student athletes who demonstrate strong character and above average academic performance, and whose continued progress would be enhanced by the financial assistance provided by this award as determined by the coaches, moderator, and the SFP Principal. FDNY Firefighter Daniel Pujdak died while battling a blaze in 2007. Danny was a spirited person who always sought to help others. The love he showed was evident in the response to his sudden and tragic loss. Thousands of individuals including his FDNY colleagues, SFP classmates and those who came to know Danny only through his story in the media, responded with abundant kindness and generosity.
