President’s Message Brother Leonard Conway, O.S.F. Dear Graduates and Friends, My second year as President of St. Francis Prep turned out to be a remarkable and emotional twelve-month period as we commemorated the 40th Anniversary of our re-location from Brooklyn to Queens, unveiled our brand-new science department, said a final “good-bye” to our beloved Coach Vince O’Connor (see cover), celebrated the accomplishments of a fabulous senior class (which included two cherished members, Justin McClymont ‘15 and Auston Charles ‘15, whom we lost in a tragic car accident in March), and recently began the long-awaited construction that will result in an entirely new music department during the 2016-17 academic year. The science and music department construction is part of Phase III of our ongoing Capital Improvement and Modernization Program which is being funded in large measure by The Campaign for St. Francis Prep: The Next 150. (See pages 27 to 29 for more details about the campaign.) You may recall that Phase I renovation work resulted in a completely upgraded infrastructure and Phase II provided us with our beautiful Physical Fitness and Art Education facilities. Needless to say, we do these things for our students who come from all walks of life and deserve only the best. And our efforts are rewarded each year—but especially this year as we saw every one of our 658 seniors graduate this past June, with 99.1% of them attending college this fall. (Six students are either taking a year off or working.) They were accepted to 308 colleges and universities in 35 states and one foreign country--including

Ivy League institutions and many other prestigious schools. They were offered $134 million in merit-based scholarships over the next four years. (This is separate from any financial aid packages they may have been offered.) One student was actually offered more than $560,000 in scholarships over a four-year period from the colleges where she applied. These accomplishments underscore the fact that we could never provide all the resources we do for our students without your continued generosity. Your support helps us maintain affordable tuition levels, fund special projects and programs, and provide financial assistance and scholarships for many deserving students. So thank you again for all you do for the Prep! As you read through these Grad News pages, you will be reminded of the numerous events and activities that keep you connected with the Prep and your classmates. And as you do, please remember, you are an important part of the Prep “family” and you are always welcome home. Thank you again and God bless you! Yours in St. Francis,

Brother Leonard Conway, O.S.F. President

Annual President’s Dinner • 2015 Brother Leonard Conway, O.S.F. hosted the Annual President’s Dinner on Saturday, March 28, 2015 in the Prep’s library. More than 150 guests were in attendance and were entertained by the St. Francis Prep String Orchestra, under the direction of Music Department faculty member, Robert Johnston. This annual event is the Prep’s salute to the loyal alumni, parents, faculty, staff and friends whose generosity at the “leadership” giving level helped St. Francis Prep in many wonderful ways during the past year. During dinner, Bro. Leonard delivered an update on all of the latest developments at the Prep. Prep’s Principal, Patrick McLaughlin ‘73 provided an overview on the many academic achievements of our students. Two representatives of the Class of 2015, James T. Cotumaccio, (who is going on to study at Fairfield University) and Kristen N. Cournane, (who was accepted to CUNY Macaulay Honors College), each spoke about their rewarding educational experiences at the Prep.

The Fourth Annual Walk-a-thon

Raises $288,000 for Prep’s Programs and Facilities Friday, September 26th was a wonderful day for faculty/staff and students as St. Francis Prep hosted its fourth annual Walk-a-thon fundraising event. The SFP Cheerleaders and the SFP Jazz Band welcomed and motivated each Cor as they walked toward the starting point in Cunningham Park. There were smiles, laughter and “selfies” being taken along the nearly two mile route! Prizes were awarded to the top Cors and three individuals who obtained the highest levels of sponsorships. This wonderful event benefits special projects and programs at the Prep, most notably the current Capital Improvement and Modernization Project. And, we’re proud to report that your generous contributions and pledges are being put to very good use each and every day for the benefit of our students! Last summer, our Science Classrooms and Labs underwent an entire “floor to ceiling” renovation. They are incredibly advanced facilities to learn in and spectacular to see! This summer, Phase III of St. Francis Prep’s Modernization Program continues with the re-designing and re-construction of the Music Education facilities. This music project will be completed in phases over the course of two years and the end result will be highly advanced learning, practice and performance spaces for our award-winning music students as well as a new dance studio and renovated student locker rooms. The Campaign for St. Francis Prep: The Next 150 (Stage Two of our Capital Campaign that benefits this Modernization Program) will continue through 2016. The Annual Walk-a-thon has contributed over $1 Million thus far toward our Campaign goal of $10 million. This year the Walk-a-thon will be held on Friday, October 23, 2015.

Students, Faculty, Staff and Alumni march in the

2014 NYC St. Patrick’s Day Parade Alumni, students, current and former parents, faculty, staff, administrators and members of the Franciscan Brothers Community all participated once again in the annual march up Fifth Avenue for the St. Patrick’s Day Parade. Marching in the parade is part of a tradition that dates back to the days when SFP was located in Brooklyn. It was revived during the Prep’s Sesquicentennial Anniversary in 2008 and has been growing stronger in both spirit and in the number of participants every year since then. Join us for next year’s St. Patrick Day Parade on Thursday, March 17, 2016. Be sure to RSVP early to reserve your commemorative hat! To register, simply go the SFP Alumni Website, alumni.sfponline.org, and look for the event on the Calendar!

Annual Golf Classic • June 2015 On Monday, June 22, 2015, the 22nd Annual Golf Classic was held at Cherry Valley Club in Garden City, NY. More than 200 golfers played on a superb course and then enjoyed an outstanding cocktail hour. Later on, as guests dined on a wonderful buffet dinner we honored some very special members of the SFP community: Joseph Licata, long-time Chair of the Foreign Language Department and Moderator of the Terrier Football Program, and The Mulholland Family (including Royce ‘79, Joshua ‘84, Dorothy and the late Joe Mulholland ‘46) who have been loyal graduates, friends and supporters of the Prep for many years! Each of the honorees spoke about the profound impact that St. Francis Prep has had on their lives. The SFP Football program was a major theme of the evening and Coach Frank Nastro spoke about his dear friend and colleague, the late Coach Vince O’Connor. It was a wonderful day and it would not have been successful without the support of our event sponsors, journal ad sponsors, golfers and the dedication of the SFP Alumni Board/Golf Classic Committee. (The net proceeds of the event benefit the Prep’s scholarship program.) Mark your calendar and plan to join us next year on Monday, June 20, 2016!

Annual Spring Reunion and Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony Saturday, April 25, 2015 • The Annual Spring Reunion and Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony provided a great opportunity for alumni to remember the reasons why St. Francis Prep was “a second home” for so many of us! The evening began with the Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony. The Hall of Fame honors graduates who have demonstrated significant lifetime achievement, devotion to the Prep’s mission, and service to others. Honorary Alumna/us status is conferred upon individuals in recognition of their devotion, service and our appreciation of their unique relationship with the St. Francis Prep community. The Classes of 1965, 1960, 1955, 1950 and 1945 were recognized as the newest members of the Golden Terrier Society— an honor bestowed upon alumni who have celebrated the 50th, 55th, 60th, 65th and 70th anniversary of their graduation. The group were presented with special medals and enjoyed their cocktails and dinner in the library. The 25th anniversary Class of 1990 along with the Classes of 1985, 1980, 1975 and 1970 gathered in the cafeteria.

SFP President, Bro. Leonard Conway, O.S.F., and Alumni Director, Bro. Robert Kent, O.S.F. along with SFP Chaplain, Father Bill Sweeney attended. It was called the “Rally in the Valley because when the Prep was located in Brooklyn, “pep rallies” were held in the alley on the N. 5th St. side of the school. The theme continued and the Tempe Mission Palms Hotel and Conference Center in Tempe, AZ became the “rally headquarters hotel” for this year’s reunion. (Members of the 55th anniversary Class of 1960 were wellrepresented and we toasted, cheered, and congratulated them.) Events included a Friday night gathering at the Watershed Restaurant at the Lakes in Tempe and a Saturday evening happy hour and dinner at Rawhide Steakhouse. On Sunday we celebrated mass at the Franciscan Casa and had a party at La Famiglia Restaurant for a taste of old Brooklyn. The daylight hours were reserved for spring MLB baseball, sightseeing, dinning, shopping, or just hanging out and catching up with old friends and meeting alumni from various years and era’s. Many thanks to our reunion committee members: Bob Caccamo ’59, Joe Kelly ’59, Dennis Esposito ’60, Byron Fanning ’60, and Christie (Van Roten) Ellis ’91 for organizing all of these wonderful reunion activities.

The first two phases of this program were completed in 2010 and 2011 respectively. Phase III was slated for 2014-16 and is well underway. Remembering our beloved coach,

Vince O’Connor

Vincent O’Connor, our beloved St. Francis Prep football coach who led the Terriers to 16 CHSFL titles in 62 seasons and won 344 games during his career, passed away on February 14, 2015 at the age of 85. He helped mold and influence thousands of lives while becoming one of the state’s most successful coaches.

Coach Vince O’Connor was a mentor on and off the field to generations of students. He embraced the Franciscan ideals and his kind spirit could be felt throughout the community. The Varsity Football Program at the Prep has achieved an outstanding record of success under Mr. O’Connor’s leadership, and he attributed much of this to the dedication and skill of the assistant coaches who have served with him.

2005 he was inducted into the Catholic Education Foundation Hall of Fame, and in 2009 he was presented with the Round Tower Award by the Irish American Building Society’s Great Irish Fair Committee. In celebration of more than 60 years of extraordinary service, and as a permanent tribute to Coach O’Connor’s selfless and tireless work with thousands of young student athletes from all walks of life, St. Francis Prep established The

Under Coach O’Connor, the St. Francis Prep Varsity Football Team has recorded 344 victories (the 2014 season was his 60th at the helm) and they have won 16 CHSFL Championships (with undefeated seasons in 1957, ‘64, ‘66, ‘72, ‘73, and ‘83), including the 2005 CHSFL Championship victory over St. Peter’s ‑ the 300th win. Numerous St. Francis Prep Football Student Athletes have gone on to play at the college level and in the professional ranks. Coach O’Connor was honored as National Coach of the Year in 1992, and he has been named New York’s Catholic High School Coach of the Year on twenty occasions. He has also served as President of the CHSFL. In 2000 he was the recipient of The Frank McGuire Foundation Award which recognizes high school coaches whose dedication and skill have a positive impact on young lives. In

He coached nine pros, four Walter Camp All-Americans and coaches like former Jets and Giants offensive coordinator Dan Henning, Rutgers head coach Kyle Flood, C.W. Post head coach Bryan Collins and retired Chaminade coach Bill Basile. In 1984, he was named an Honorary Alumnus of St. Francis Prep. RFK was campaigning for the U.S. Senate seat from New York and was driving by the park and asked his driver to stop so he could watch the Terriers practice. He was so impressed that he told Vince that he would come to a game against Chaminade at Boys High Field that Sunday. He never showed and it’s been said that RFK had a hand in helping the recently departed Richie Szaro ‘67 obtain admission to Harvard University. Coach Frank Nastro was O’Connor’s right hand man and they worked side by side for 35 years. The color photo on the right was taken on May 12, 2006 at an SFP Testimonial Dinner honoring the coaching legends. The B&W photo on the right is from a 1950s San Fran yearbook. “Together they held our student atheletes to a high standard of discipline and instilled the Franciscan values.” said Bro. Robert Kent, O.S.F.

300th Win & AA CHSFL Championship In 2005, Coach O’Connor logged his 300th win and his 15th league crown at the 2005 CHSFL Championship with a victory over St. Peter’s. O’Connor told a New York Post reporter “I was concerned that the players would become too focused on the 300 wins than on St. Peter’s and that would be dangerous.” He continued with, “But it helps when you have a player like Jeffrey Aime to give the ball to.” In that same interview Aime said “We did this for Coach.” Pictured clockwise from top: The players hoist Coach O’Connor up in celebration of this milestone victory. Rich Carroll ‘86 to Carry on the Tradition Rich Carroll, the long time protégé and assistant of legendary football coach Vince O’Connor, has been named the new head football coach at St. Francis Prep by Sal Fischetti ‘83, SFP Athletic Director. Carroll, who returned to coach at St. Francis at the request of Coach O’Connor in 2009, was O’Connor’s personal assistant and coordinator of daily football operations. Since Carroll’s strategic appointment by O’Connor, the two made great strides in re-establishing the football program as a serious competitor within the CHSFL, boasting of two seasons of undefeated inseason play (2012, 2013), only to fall short both years in the first round of the playoffs. Coach Carroll said of Coach Vince O’Connor: “Coach O’Connor was an amazing mentor to me that always had a handle on the right thing to say and what needed to be done. I am blessed and extremely grateful to be part of the elite fraternity that can say they were coached by Vince O’Connor not only as a player or as a football coach, but perhaps most importantly as a man. Thank you Coach!” In a heart-felt remembrance of his mentor, Rich posted the following on the St. Francis Prep Football Facebook page in late August 2015: Dear Coach O’Connor, Day 1 is here...our one-on-one meetings were different this summer... I did all the talking… As I drew up schemes and plays on my legal pad like you taught me, I could hear your voice echoing in my head.... “Whatever is best for the boys….” Your presence is still felt and your lessons ring loud as the 2015 Team starts their journey to make their mark on our history. On for ole’ St. Francis, Coach... I know you are watching... We will make you proud!!! --Coach Carroll Rich was the Captain of the St. Francis Prep 1985 AAA CHSFL / Metro Bowl Championship Team and brings 16 years of football coaching experience to the position. Carroll first recognized his passion for coaching during his senior year at LIU Post when the team’s offensive line coach had to resign due to a family emergency, leaving Carroll to become a player/ coach for Head Coach Tom Marshall and mentor the younger players of the

Upon graduation, Carroll took a Graduate Assistant Coaching position at Wagner College (Staten Island, NY), under Coach Walt Hamline as the Tight Ends Coach where he coached All-American Tight End Abe Higgins. In 1991 Carroll rejoined his Alma mater and Head Coach Tom Marshall at LIU Post as the Offensive Line Coach where he was fortunate to work with then defensive Line Coach and fellow St. Francis Prep Football Alumni Bryan Collins ’82 who is now a long time friend and the Head Coach and Athletic Director at LIU Post. Coach Vince O’Connor’s passing earlier this year was a great loss for his family, friends and generations of Prep alumni. His absence can be felt throughout the Prep community—particularly right now by those in the SFP Football program. Coach Frank Nastro (pictured above, center) and Coach Vince O’Connor worked side by side for 35 years. Therefore, it was fitting tribute to his life-long friend and colleague when Nastro visited the Prep as the 2015 Terriers begin their journey without the man who has been the heart and soul of the program for 62 years. Franciscan Focus In much the same way that a variety of different flowers and plants make a beautiful garden, each Franciscan Brother has unique gifts, talents and traits which serve to create a beautiful “landscape” within the Prep community. We are grateful for the gift of their vocations and their devotion to our students, parents and faculty/staff! Going forward, each new publication of ours will spotlight a member of the Franciscan Brothers community at the Prep. Our focus in this edition is Brother James McVeigh, O.S.F. Brother James is the Franciscan Mission Coordinator at the Prep in addition to serving various other roles in the Diocese of Rockville Center. At St. Francis Prep, one of his major efforts is the Franciscan Youth Movement (FYM). Brother James says, “The goal is to make our values come alive in the Prep family.” Adding, “We try to put our Franciscan values into practice by having fun, (value- JOY); helping others (Live Lovingly); collecting and recycling used ink cartridges and cell phones (Value - Care for Creation) and mirroring Christ (value -being Instruments of Peace).

Some of activities you will find Brother James and the FYM students engaged in include: writing cards and letters at Christmas for the men and women in our armed forces and the elderly; visiting the residents at Queen of Peace Residence, (a nursing home); planning a party for a children’s hospital; conducting a donation drive, or “baby shower” for young families in need, and various other activities.

Brother James celebrated 50 years as a Franciscan Brother this year and the SFP Alumni Association conferred the title of “Honorary Alumnus” upon him at their Annual Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony in April 2015. (See page 16.) Last year, the students of the Art Department published a portfolio of artwork with Franciscan themes and dedicated it to Brother James.

Brother James brings his joyful presence to as many student and alumni events as his schedule will allow. During the school day he can be found in the main corridor during the change of classes greeting students and faculty with positive words or a pleasant greeting. Almost everyone of his emails ends with, “Keep smiling and continue to do wonderful things!”

We are delighted to spotlight Brother James in this edition and wish him many more years of active and joyous ministry! If you wish to get in contact with Brother James, you can e-mail him at: jmcveigh@sfponline.org.

(3) Art students and faculty pose with Brother James during an Art Exhibition, “The Prayers of St. Francis”. The paintings were created by students and were on display throughout the school. A photo book with all of the art was printed and it contained a special dedication to Brother James: “Thank you for all of the warm greetings each morning and for your dedication to the Franciscan Mission”.

(4) Brother James attends many student and alumni events each year. At the Annual Science Research Symposium he stops to congratulate all of the students and faculty members on their fine work and dedication.

(5) Brother James celebrated his 50th year as a Franciscan Brother this year with family and friends. (6) Brother James often jokes that he’d prefer to read a novel or take a long stroll in the park over going to a major league baseball game. Nevertheless, he was absolutely delighted to find a plaque at Yankee Stadium commemorating Pope John Paul II’s 1979 Celebration of Mass at Yankee Stadium.

A Message from Brother Robert Kent, O.S.F., Alumni Director Dear Alumni and Friends, We begin our annual GradNews on a sad note, announcing the passing of iconic and legendary football coach, Vincent O’Connor, H’84. Coach O’Connor had a long and illustrious career and during that time assumed many different roles, but it is clear to all those who knew him well that the role closest to his heart was the coaching and mentoring role played out at Prep. He offered his athletic expertise and analytical skills for over six decades, and during that time earned the respect of all those individuals whose lives he impacted. His coaching style drew the attention of his fellow professionals, since it was radically characterized by love and compassion for his student athletes. It wasn’t just about the game or about victory for him. It was about giving everything you have in order to excel and to experience pride in doing your best. Vincent O’Connor taught all of us that greatness and humility can coexist side by side in the same person. He taught all of us that success can be achieved in an uncomplicated way, by total dedication and commitment to one’s ideals. We salute and acknowledge a man who will long be remembered and revered by the Prep community as a true Franciscan. May he rest in peace! Just as you would expect, another year, in typical fashion, has managed to speed by, leaving us wondering where all the time has gone. We are once again simply amazed how we can begin our work at the Prep in September and suddenly it’s already June. But even though we all tend to get caught up in the fast pace of life at the Prep, it is important that we slow down long enough to look back and recount all the good things which have transpired and which make the Prep such a rewarding experience for students, faculty and staff, alike. As we are already keenly aware, the Prep is committed to providing an outstanding, wellrounded, Franciscan Education. This was reaffirmed this year, as our students continued to excel in Science, Music, Art, Language and Athletics, exemplifying the spirit of St. Francis of Assisi. Members of the Class of 2015 have been accepted to 308 colleges and universities in 35 states and one foreign country, including Ivy League schools and many other prestigious institutions. They have been offered over $134 million in college merit scholarships over the next four years. One student was even offered more than $560,000 over a four-year period. At the heart of all we do is a dedicated staff, faculty and administration who are invested in the future growth of our students. Quality education demands dignity and respect for oneself and

others. The professions of the 21st century will require advanced training. The Prep has provided our students with a strong and solid foundation, one that will generate a life-long love of learning and acquire the academic training and skills necessary for a career in the 21st century. Their foundation gives Prep students the opportunity to be at the forefront of learning and technology that will carry them into the future. This is our mission and our passion. With the completion of the modern, spacious, technologically advanced, student-friendly hightech Science labs, (which are second to none in the metropolitan area), construction of the new Music facility began in June. This represents the next phase of the school’s ongoing capital improvement and modernization program. This new facility will complement an already excellent, award winning music program with an acoustically enhanced environment, as well as office and storage space for instruments and equipment. The Prep will continue to grow in greatness through the anticipated support of our Alumni. We need and appreciate your help! Let’s have a great turnout for our Homecoming Weekend. The weekend will kick-off on Thursday evening, October 1st, with a 3-on-3 Hoops Tournament in memory of Jimmy Prendergast ’79 and James Prendergast H’11, following on Friday, October 2nd, with a Golf Outing in memory of Danny Apicella ‘00 at Clearview, following by a night at Sullivan’s. Saturday, October 3rd, a Day at the Races at Belmont Park in the Turf and Field Club. Finally, on Sunday, October 4th, we will have our 5K Fun Run in honor of our September 11th heroes, followed by the Homecoming Football game against Xavier at 3 PM at Mitchell Field. ____________________________ On October 4th, we celebrated the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi with a liturgy celebrated by Bishop Raymond Chappetto. We honored Brother James McVeigh, O.S.F., on the occasion of his 50th Anniversary as a Franciscan Brother. The Canticle Citation was presented to Joe Licata for 40 years of service; Leo Pujdak for 25 years of service; Phyllis Gambino and Francesco Purificato were recognized for their 15 years of service and The Principal’s Award was presented to Dorothy Cassano (40 years of service), Betty Pietromonaco (25 years of service) and Radiana Fitzpatrick (15 years of service). I would like to take this time to recognize some special individuals who have made such considerable contributions to our Prep community

and who are now retiring this summer. Let us bid a fond farewell to Sister Barbara Coyle, C.S.J., for her 38 years of service in the Guidance Department; Patricia Murray for her 34 years of service as a teacher of Religious Education; Leo Pujdak for his 26 years of service as a teacher of Religious Education; Fred Salvo, for his remarkable 45 years of service in the Mathematics Department; Brother Warren Prentiss, O.S.F., for his 38 years of service as the Attendance Director and Irene Milla, for her 22 years of service as an Administrative Assistant to the Principal and Assistant Principal. A combined total of 203 years of service to the Prep. We salute you for your commitment and years of service and thank you for the profound impact you have made on the lives of those in your care. Now it is time to smell the proverbial roses. The entire Prep community values and acknowledges the staff and faculty members for their dedicated many loyal years of service. We are grateful that they have been our partners in our Franciscan Mission. Thank you to our loyal alumni and friends for their generosity and their continued support of the Prep. I will forever be proud of the Prep Community for its strong dedication to the pursuit of excellence, its tireless concern for all those entrusted to its care, and its unwavering commitment to develop future leaders of tomorrow. As always, I am grateful to the members of the Alumni Board for all they have done and will continue to do for St. Francis Prep. Thank you for your unfailing support. May the blessing of St. Francis be with you and your family, now and all the days of your life. “High School is for 4 years, the Prep is Forever” In gratitude,

Brother Robert Kent, O.S.F. Alumni Director

It’s Easy to Lend Your Support to St. Francis Prep Gifts of any size are appreciated and will help make a Prep education more affordable for a deserving student. There are many ways to offer your support:

Online Giving Gifts made with a credit card help the Prep benefit almost immediately. You may donate to Prep using your American Express, MasterCard, Visa or Discover Card on the St. Francis Prep Alumni Website at: alumni.sfponline.org. (Click on the “Donate to the Prep” menu item.) Check or Money Order If you wish to make your gift by check or money order, kindly forward it to: St. Francis Preparatory School, Office of Development, 6100 Francis Lewis Boulevard, Fresh Meadows, NY 11361. Checks or money orders should be made payable to St. Francis Prep. Pledged Gift You may pledge a gift and arrange convenient payment installments. Later this year you will be asked to consider your “pledged” support for the campaign to help fund the Prep’s modernization program. Gifts of Stocks and Bonds Donating appreciated securities is another way of helping Prep while also providing potential tax advantages for you. For example: If you purchased stock many years ago for $1,000, and it is now worth $10,000, an outright gift of that stock to St. Francis Prep would result in a charitable deduction of $10,000. You also avoid paying capital gains tax on the $9,000 of appreciation. For further information on how to transfer stock, please call Robert Angeletti at (718) 423-8810, ext. 269.

Double Your Gift!

Corporate Matching Gifts Many employers sponsor matching gift programs and will match any charitable contributions made by their employees, and in many cases, even retirees and/or spouses. A matching gift allows your donation to go further. If your company is eligible, request a matching gift form from your company’s Benefits department. Complete and sign the form and send it in with your gift. We will do the rest. *********************************************************
