What is studying a course at the College like?
Our partnerships with employers mean that you start to build important contacts before you finish your studies, so you really will stand head and shoulders above the competition in an ever competitive job market.
If you are aged 16 to 18 you will enrol on a study programme, which includes: • a full-time course or Apprenticeship qualification at either entry level or levels 1, 2 or 3 in your chosen subject • help to complete GCSEs in English and maths if you didn’t achieve grade 4/5 or above (A*-C) at school
How do I decide which course is right for me? There is a lot to think about when choosing which career you would like to follow and many things can affect your decision. Look through our courses and ask yourself:

ENGLISH AND MATHS We understand that English and maths are essential life skills. Developing good English and maths skills builds confidence and opens up greater opportunities when it comes to higher education and employment. If you didn’t achieve a grade 4/5 (C) or above in GCSE English or maths at school, then City College Plymouth will support you to improve your grades. As part of your study programme, you will complete GCSEs or functional skills in English and/or maths alongside your core professional, vocational and technical qualification or Apprenticeship programme. Whatever route you take, we will make sure that you understand the relevance of English and maths skills to your career.

QUALIFICATIONS EXPLAINED NEW FOR 2020 - T Levels
Entry Level Awards and Certificates This level of course is for those who need support to progress with their learning. The courses encourage independence and teach new skills.
From September 2020, across the UK courses in construction, digital industries, and education and childcare will be the first to be taught as new technical qualifications known as T Levels.
Level 1 and 2 Certificates and Diplomas These are one-year courses, which allow you to progress either into employment or on to higher level study. All our level 1 and 2 qualifications have progression routes on to the next level of study (subject to satisfactory performance).
As we prepare for the launch of these courses at City College Plymouth in 2021, there’ll be even more opportunities for work placements and other activities to give you real life experience in your chosen industry.
Level 3 Diplomas
• T Levels are similar to A Levels, but have a vocational focus rather than academic. This means you’ll get a more ’hands-on’ learning experience.
What are T Levels?
These are two-year vocational qualifications which will prepare you for direct entry into employment or to higher education (such as a university-level course). Some diplomas consist of more than one qualification and many offer additional related qualifications to support applications to work or university. Higher National Certificates/Diplomas (HNC/Ds) These are higher-level qualifications, which relate to a particular employment sector and tend to be equivalent to the first and/or second stage of a degree. They are for students who are aged 18+ and have successfully completed an A Level, extended diploma or other advanced-level course. Foundation Degrees These are industry-related higher education qualifications equivalent to the first and second stage of a degree, developed by the College with employers. They are designed to include workplace experience, learning and assessment, whilst also providing a route for progression into employment or to the final year of an honours degree at specified universities. Bachelor’s Degrees A bachelor’s degree will give you a university-level qualification which will enable you to progress directly into a career in your chosen field or pursue an advanced degree. 8

• They are level 3 qualifications, so are the same as A Levels. • Bridging the gap between classrooms and employers, T Levels are two year programmes, similar to A Levels and many Apprenticeships. • Just like A Levels and BTECs, they give you UCAS points so you can use them to progress on to university. • Taking a T Level course will boost your work experience hours from 60 to 300, with 45 days’ placements in your chosen industry. Course content is developed with employers, giving you the skills you’ll need to enter the workplace once you’ve completed your course. Who are T Levels suitable for? T Levels may be suitable for students who: • benefit from a more ’hands-on‘ style of learning than traditional classroom-based study • know what career path they want to follow once they finish education • want to leave school but still continue with their education.

An Apprenticeship is a practical, recognised training programme supported by your employer and the College. You earn a wage and get on-the-job training from your workplace. There are three different types of Apprenticeship: intermediate level, advanced level and higher/degree level.
How does it work? •Y ou can expect to work between 30 and 40 hours per week (including time spent at the College) and be paid a wage. •T he majority of apprentices spend four days a week with their employer and one day at the College.
Where will an Apprenticeship take me? With an Apprenticeship you can: • get a job - your industry experience and qualifications are highly valued by employers • consider further study - work your way through the NVQ diploma levels to improve your qualifications and employability
•Y ou will be entitled to at least 20 days of paid holiday each year.
• apply for university - depending on the course and university, an advanced level Apprenticeship is broadly considered equivalent to studying for A Levels.
•M ost of your training will be in the workplace, but you may need to come into College for assessment or on a day-release basis. •Y ou will be visited regularly in your workplace by a member of College staff to keep you on the right track and support you to complete your Apprenticeship programme.

•O n average, apprentices earn around £137 per week - which, in addition to all of the other benefits, is pretty good! •D uring your Apprenticeship you will work towards an NVQ qualification. The type and level of qualification will depend on what kind of Apprenticeship you are on. • As part of your day release at the College, you will study functional skills - these are practical maths and English skills relevant to your Apprenticeship.

CASE STUDY Rhianne went along the ‘traditional’ educational route, completing her A Levels and going on to university-level study, however, she felt just as unsure of her future at 21 as she did at 16. Now 12 months into a Digital Marketing & Social Media Apprenticeship at City College Plymouth, Rhianne has finally found the right career path. “With my degree in hand I was still unsure of my career path. I was getting older and I couldn’t afford to go back into education, which is when I started looking into Apprenticeships. When I was making my post-16 choices, Apprenticeships were never offered as an option but they seemed like a great way to get into a new career without breaking the bank! “I didn’t realise how many Apprenticeship opportunities there were and in so many different sectors. I chose to apply for a Digital Marketing & Social Media Apprenticeship at the College as I am a creative person and I felt the skills I had would be well suited to the role. “I am 12 months into my Apprenticeship and I love it! No two days are the same and I often find myself out and about as I create content for the College’s various social media platforms. I have already gained experience in different aspects of marketing from helping out at events, to assisting with press release information. I also get the opportunity to use my creative skills in video editing, photography and using programmes such as Photoshop.
“As someone who has started an Apprenticeship later in life, I feel I’m finally where I am supposed to be. Before, I felt like I was going through the motions and doing what I was told to do, but now with my Apprenticeship I am taking ownership of my own learning. CONSTRUCTION All construction students have access to industry-standard workshop facilities and are taught by qualified tradespeople, equipping you with the skills needed for your future employment. Get the technical skills you need, and learn about sustainable building practices, running projects, managing people and developing your own business. Our strong links with local and national construction employers guarantee reallife experience through work placements and hands-on community-based projects, ensuring you are ‘job ready’ when you leave us. Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) Cards CSCS cards provide proof that individuals working on construction sites have the required training and qualifications for the type of work they carry out - you must have a CSCS card to work onsite! All level 1 students will work towards gaining a CSCS card as part of their study programme. Those studying level 2 and 3 courses will receive CSCS health and safety training and test preparation incorporated within their study programme and will be given the opportunity to register, sit the exam and receive their card (if successful) for a fee of £22. SCIENCE Through our study programmes, we will help you train your natural curiosity and inquiring mind to seek out answers about the world around you. Learn how to question, investigate, report and communicate your findings, and explore the scientific methods and principles that, combined with good practice, will support your investigations. Face realistic workplace situations, including impressive science labs with all the latest equipment. You will also have the opportunity to attend several exciting and varied field trips to enhance your learning. Our exciting level 3 science pathways will give you the best platform for progression; building a good foundation of skills in science before selecting more specialist units to study. After successful completion of year one (course codes FDAS, FDFC or NDESD), you will be able to progress to year two and specialise further in one of three fields: forensic and criminal investigation, biomedical science or marine science and conservation. MYTH BUSTING Do young people have to stay in school until they’re 18? No - young people are required to stay in education or training, but these choices include going to College or doing an Apprenticeship. They do not have to stay at school. Here are some other post-16 education facts you need to know … 1. Y oung people DO NOT have to stay at school until they achieve a GCSE grade 4/5 (previously a grade C) in both English and maths. They can study GCSEs part-time to support another course/study programme or try functional skills (equivalent qualifications in practical English and maths skills). 2. Young people CAN apply for an Apprenticeship even if they do not achieve a GCSE grade 4/5 in English and maths. As part of day release, they will study functional skills - these are practical maths and English skills relevant to their Apprenticeship.
3. I f young people choose a BTEC qualification, they CAN go on to study a university-level course. For specific degree and foundation degree entry requirements please see the UCAS website www.ucas.com. 4. C ollege is NOT like school. Students get to experience so much more than just sitting in a classroom. Hands-on training, getting to grips with our industry-standard facilities, meeting employers, and building core employability skills are just some of the reasons to ‘be part of it’.

Safeguarding and being safe at College
Extra help in the classroom
The College takes its responsibilities for the safety and well-being of its students very seriously. There is a designated and specially trained Safeguarding team who support and advise students and staff in all aspects of ‘being safe’.
The College is committed to helping all students by giving them support to be successful on their chosen study programme/course. If your son/daughter has an Education, Health and Care Plan or a learning disability that may affect their learning or participation, we need to know as soon as possible so we can ensure they receive the right support and assistance. This information is only used for support purposes.
Safeguarding incorporates a range of matters including health and safety (including online safety), protection from abuse or exploitation, anti-bullying (including cyber-bullying), staying safe online and associated matters.
Costs and funding Our Student Funding team provides information, advice and guidance about the range of funds on offer. They can help with: • sources of financial support and funding applications
Students can tell us about this on their application form, at interview, at enrolment, during induction or at any time during their time at the College. We respect a student’s right not to tell us about a disability, but this may affect the College’s ability to provide the appropriate level of support.
Welfare The College has a team of Student Liaison Support Workers whose role is to provide informal support to students who are struggling with their study programme.

College Meal Scheme The College runs a FREE breakfast club for students during term time and support for students entitled to a free college meal.
Travel
They liaise with personal tutors and other College staff to identify students who need help. They then work on a one-to-one basis in whatever ways will help the students to improve their attendance, enjoy College life and get them back on track.
There are a number of travel options available to full-time students. During term time, the College operates a FREE bus service running between the City Centre, Plymouth rail station and Kings Road (Stagecoach service 36). If you live further afield in Plymouth, Devon and Cornwall, you may be eligible for some financial assistance to help with travel costs.
