you’ll pay for a half-dead, beat up cow? Let’s say they were able to successfully auction off 400 cows for $500.00 each (I’m being very very generous). The brainiac head of BLM authorized 10 million dollars or more to maybe recoup $200,000. Really? As a CEO I’d fire that decision-maker immediately. In their minds, maybe it’s worth getting rid of the cows, or just killing them, so the cows won’t destroy equipment for a project they might want to implement. The BLM tried to paint their actions as enforcing the law; however, there are several other reasons why the BLM chose to pick this fight. I wonder when the federal government will think Nevada is mature enough to set our own grazing rules or enforce our own laws. I didn’t meet one Nevadan supporting the BLM or their removal of the cows. If Nevadans don’t care about which land is used for grazing, why should a bureaucrat who works for the federal government get to trump that? I had the opportunity to meet the American-minded Bundy supporters from all over our country. They were peacefully protesting the BLM’s actions, and I’m excited to report the Bundy family was successful in keeping the peace until the BLM stopped their roundup and returned the Bundy’s cattle.

for tinder, which naturally will be damp during wet weather. There are numerous commercially available products. Many are well engineered to catch a spark and fire up quickly. A small package of 5 or 6 is only a few dollars. If they are compressed, pull one end apart or use a rock to break up the fibers. You might even be able to reuse one if you can transfer the fire to your kindling and extinguish it before it is all gone. My favorite homemade tinder is cotton balls smeared with a dab of Vaseline. Is YOUR Property Safe From Obama’s EPA? Posted March 30, 2014

T

here was a recent story about a family in Wyoming that is experi encing the ruthlessness of government bureaucrats the hard way. The family built a pond on “their property” in 2012 and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is telling them it violates the Clean Water Act. The government is claiming that the family is in violation of building a dam or creek without a permit, as well as claiming that contents from the family-built pond are running into other waterways. The EPA is now threatening fines of up to $75,000 per day for the supposed violation. That is not a misprint. It isn’t $75 per day, which would seem harsh enough. It is $75,000

per day, which is a completely ridiculous figure. The family is refusing to pay. There are so many questions that can be asked here, but the obvious one is in regards to property rights. Why is the government allowed to tell others what they can and can’t do with their own property? If government has any role to play (in a free and just society), it is only to protect property rights and enforce contracts. In this case, not only is the

`

government not protecting property rights, the government itself is violating the property rights. Although this can be said about most things that government is involved in, this is a particularly egregious example, particularly when it comes down as so totalitarian. If the property owners were polluting or infringing on other people’s property, then there would be a legitimate dispute. But there would also be an actual victim, which would be the owner or owners of the property being infringed upon. In this particular case in Wyoming, the EPA claims seem to be non-specific.

Energy Companies Fleeing This One Liberal State In Droves… By Joel Kotkin - Posted March 10, 2014

T

he recent decision by Occidental Petroleum to move its headquarters to Houston from Los Angeles, where it was founded over a half-century ago, confirms the futility and delusion embodied in California’s ultragreen energy policies. By embracing solar and wind as preferred sources of generating power, the state promotes an ever-widening gap between its declining middle- and working-class populations and a smaller, self-satisfied group of environmental campaigners and their corporate backers. Talk to people who work in the fossilfuel industry, and they tell you they feel ostracized and even hated; to be an oil firm in California is like being a pork producer in an ultra-Orthodox section of Jerusalem. One top industry executive told me that many of his colleagues in California

cringe at the prospect of being attacked by politicians and activists as something akin to war criminals. “I wouldn’t subject my kids to that environment,” the Gulf Coast-based oilman suggested. What matters here is not the hurt feelings of energy executives, but a massive lost opportunity to create loads of desperately needed jobs, particularly for blue-collar workers. The nation may be undergoing a massive “energy revolution,” based largely on new supplies of oil and, particularly, cleaner natural gas, but California so far has decided not to play. In all but forcing out fossil-fuel firms, California is shedding one of its historic core industries. Not long ago, California was home to a host of top 10 energy firms – ARCO, Getty Oil, Union Oil, Oxy and Chevron; in 1970, oil firms constituted the five largest industrial companies in the state. Now, only Chevron, which has been reducing its headcount in Northern California and is clearly shifting its emphasis to Texas, will remain. Obama’s EPA Attacks Prospect of World’s Largest Copper Mine By Alan Caruba - Posted March 10, 2014

could write every day about some new obscene Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) effort to thwart energy the nation needs, forcing the shutdown of more coal-fired plants and the mines that supply them. Goodbye thousands of jobs, goodbye electrical energy. The White House has delayed the construction of the Keystone Xl pipeline to transmit oil from Canada to the U.S. Gulf Coast. Do you wonder, still, why there are millions of Americans out of work or who have stopped looking because every effort to build the nation’s economy is attacked by some element of the Obama Administration. We can now add another attack on natural resources because the EPA has announced its intention to restrict, if not prohibit, the development of Pebble Mine in Alaska. The

mine could be one of the world’s largest sources of copper. Beyond the economic benefits the mine would create, it would not only produce copper, but strategic metals like molybdenum and rhenium. Daniel McGroarty, the president of the American Resources Policy Network, noted in a July Wall Street Journal opinion that these two metals “are essential to countless American manufacturing, high-tech, and national security applications.” Copper is one of the most important minerals used today because it is a good conductor of heat and electricity—second only to silver in electrical conductivity. It was discovered thousands of years ago in prehistoric times. Methods for refining copper from its ores were developed around 5,000 BC and, though too soft for many tools, when mixed with other metals, the resulting alloys were harder. The entire Bronze Age owes its name to the mixture of copper and tin. Brass is a mixture of copper and zinc. Taking a little break from the Health Column this month to write on something that might be of interest to all of you. Here is a neat little story about Miller’s Garage in its heyday down in Ocotillo CA. Hope you enjoy it!

F

or those of you reading this, if you are over 50 years of age, you just may remember a place down in Ocotillo called “Miller’s Garage.” For many a traveler headed to San Diego from all points east on old Highway 80, Miller’s

Garage was the last stop where you could get a drink, a bite to eat or some service before you headed up the grade to Jacumba. It was just an old two lane road, one each way, narrow and dangerous, taking a toll on many a car with overheating or poor brakes. Al Miller moved from Texas in 1926 and found work in a garage in Jacumba. Then he opened his own roadside service station and restaurant just west of Ocotillo in 1933.

My neighbor and good buddy, 88-yearold Dick McCoy knew Miller well back in the 1940’s and 1950’s. McCoy was a Greyhound bus driver for 32 years after serving in the war. McCoy was driving a 1936 Ford coupe from San Diego to Imperial one morning. The Old Highway 80 would wind through the local mountains of San Diego’s east county at Jacumba. The highway at that time would go right past the Desert View Tower which still stands proud today. As the highway went past the Desert View Tower, much closer than today’s Highway 8, it veered to the left. Parts of the old 80 can still be seen today as the picture shows. As Mc Coy started down the grade past the Desert View Tower, he saw a big luxury sedan coming over on his side of the road into his lane. In a split second he could see the chauffeur of the big car had looked back over the shoulder to talk to his passenger and that had caused the car to come into McCoy’s lane. McCoy had not much of a choice. He could hit that car darn near head on or he could swerve to the right shoulder which was not much if anything at all. Steering right to avoid the collision, McCoy went off the side of the road and rolled down a steep ravine. With no safety belts in cars back then, McCoy recalled feeling like he was in a washing machine rolling over and over. As he kept some change in a sock in the glove box, the change rolled and bounced around in the car with the wreck, seemingly in slow motion. When the car finally came to a stop, it was all quiet and dark. He could not move much as he was pinned inside the old Ford. He tried to move but he was stuck, wedged in the car. He was worried it might catch on fire. The folks up on the road asked a passing motorist to get help as soon as they could. No cell phones back then of course. One of the motorists stopped at Miller’s at the bottom of the grade and told Al Miller about the accident. Miller packed up his tow truck and headed up the grade arriving before any help from the Jacumba Fire Department. Al Miller used his tow cable to lower himself down the ravine to where the crumpled Ford had come to rest. McCoy could hear Miller yelling “Is there anyone inside the car?” McCoy responded “I’m in here but I cannot move, I’m pinned under the dash against the firewall.” Miller tried to open the doors of the car but it was so crushed and crumpled he could not get inside to help McCoy. Miller told McCoy to stay still and he would be right back. Miller went back up to his tow truck, got the gas cutting torch he had on the truck and came back down to the wreck. Miller told McCoy to try to yell and tell him if it got too hot. Then he started cutting away the firewall of the Ford from the engine side. Finally after about 30 minutes, Miller was able to peel the firewall back enough like a tin can to allow McCoy to get out of the wreck. By then, the Jacumba Fire

Old Highway 80 can be seen up above the modern Interstate 8 that replaced it decades ago.

Department guys were on the scene. They had lowered ropes over the side of the ravine and used boats-men like chairs to bring them back up to the road. McCoy was sore with bruises and scrapes but no apparent serious injuries. Darn lucky again he was for sure, after surviving WW2 as an underwater frogman and racing motorcycles for fun. Miller gave McCoy a ride down to his garage in Ocotillo. McCoy thanked Miller and got a ride from his uncle to Imperial. He went to a chiropractor for a few days in Brawley and made a full recovery from his ordeal. McCoy would always stop at Miller’s Garage with his bus load of travelers after that fateful day. Folks could get out, stretch their legs, get a cold drink, a snack, use the bathroom. But Miller was no regular guy. Miller had a touch for showmanship and shenanigans to say the least. Miller used to have a cactus out front that had a sign “Cactus Spring Water, 10 cents.” Now mind you, a soda was 25 cents back then and a burger with fries was about 75 cents with a drink! Folks would get a glass of that water thinking it was special but really it was just from the well pump and it was plumbed so the spigot came out of the cactus. Nonetheless, folks would pay for that Cactus Water like it was something special! There was another sign at the station as well to go along with this charade of comedy that read “Miller’s Springs” with an arrow pointing to a trail leading up a small hill next to the station. Folks would hike up the path to the top of the hill and see a bunch of old bed springs and assorted other springs and realize the Joker had played them well. On a hot day down in the desert, this was not always amusing to many a person. But, what could you do? Some sense of humor! On another day, McCoy pulled his bus in to Miller’s. There was a couple there with a fancy car and fancy clothes who had problems with the transmission of their car. It would not shift. Miller told them to go see his “springs” and he would look at their car. Miller often wore an all white doctors smock and played

the part of auto guru of sorts. Miller told the couple that the manufacturer of their car often put too many parts on the shifter and that he had fixed it for them now, dropping a few extra nuts and washers out of his pocket on to the floor. In fact, the cotter pin had fallen out that held the shift rod to the transmission shaft. He did not over charge them but

had a big grin as he sent them on their way, telling McCoy of his stunts, laughing as they left the station. McCoy saw Miller pull gags like this all the time with folks, just for the fun of it. Maybe the desert does this to folks. Keeps them sane perhaps. Miller even taught himself to fly, using the old Old Highway 80, that was from 1917, on the north side of his shop as a runway. He would taxi a Piper Cub back and forth training himself on the old road. Eventually Miller was good enough to fly to meetings in El Centro for Texaco station operators. The newer highway 80 was built in the 1930’s and went right by the south side of his station. In the 1960’s, new Highway 8 as we see it today, bypassed Miller’s and his business fell off to the point he had to close. His son took over the station for awhile and

Miller eventually got the State to compensate him fairly for all the business he lost due to the new route of Highway 8. I’m 56 now and when I was about 10 years old, my grandfather, John De Forest, would stop at Miller’s once in a while. It was a real treat after a day of

looking for arrowheads, Indian artifacts and rock hounding. We would pull the old Jeep in and maybe get an ice cream, candy bar or a cold soda. Once we broke a drive shaft and Miller had to come get us out of a wash we were stuck in near Ocotillo. I still remember Miller in his white work jacket. McCoy never forgot Miller and what he did for him on that fateful day. McCoy would always make sure to stop at Miller’s Garage on his bus route from El Centro to San Diego and give Miller some business in thanks for rescuing him from the mangled ‘36 Ford. One day when McCoy pulled into Miller’s for the stop the passengers got out of the bus and started walking around. One lady came over to McCoy in a bit of a foul mood and said “Sir, this here Miller’s Garage is not on our official Greyhound bus tour pamphlet listed as a stopping point!” In

typical McCoy fashion, he replied to the irate passenger “Well Ma’am, I’m the bus driver here and it’s on my list of stops and I always stop here.” And McCoy always did stop there as he was so grateful to be cut out of that wreck by Al Miller, even after many a year had passed on by with the march of time. You can still see what is left of Miller’s. It has a new owner who may restore it if he can get past all the land use and permit regulations that have dogged the property over the years. It’s all run down, fenced off, just sitting there on the north side of Highway 8. You can get off the highway and head in to Ocotillo, turn west on old 80, it is right up the road. If you are in Ocotillo, stop by the newly opened Red Feather Cafe, get a specialty sandwich or burger named after several of San Diego’s famous motocross racers. The Marty Tripes Flying Burrito, the Bill Silverthorn, Marty Smith or Tommy Croft burgers are well worth the time to stop. The cafe there has classic motorcycles inside, pictures of the area’s famous motocross legends and memorabilia. Tell Frank and his crew that Dr D sent you. And don’t forgot to check out Miller’s Garage while you’re in the area! Dr. Gary De Forest is a sports injury chiropractor with his office in Old Town San Diego. He has been located there for 30 years. If anyone reading this article has any pictures of Miller’s Garage in it’s heydays, please feel free to forward them to deforest192@yahoo.com. Dr. De Forest is always happy to speak with you about any health concerns you would like to discuss. He can be reached by e-mail or at his office 619-291-2462. E

General Tire Mint 400 Continued an iconic race and is so important for our sport right now…I’m really honored to have this win with the help of such an amazing race team.” The one hundred mile Mint 400 race course loop had a devastating effect on the field this year. Of the 330 starters, only 163 finished within the time limit – making the rate of attrition 49%, for what many in desert racing have long considered the toughest race in the sport. Known as “The Great American Off-Road Race,” The Mint 400 is the oldest, roughest, most spectacular off-road race in America! This 400-mile off-road marathon was started in 1967, and remains an important part of American racing history. Thousands of racers and celebrities from around the world have competed at The Mint – and it draws nearly 300 race teams, and 60,000 spectators annually to Las Vegas, Nevada – to compete in over 20 classes of race vehicles. COURT DECISION WILL EVENTUALLY REOPEN DUNES By Nicole Gilles, aSa Executive Director

T

he following press release has been issued by attorneys who represent the American Sand Association (aSa). The historic ruling by Judge Illston on April 3, 2014 upholds a quality balance between recreation and resource protection in the Imperial Sand Dunes Recreation Area. The aSa would like to thank the Bureau of Land Management, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the Court for taking the time to understand the facts and realities of public land management and endangered species protection at the ISDRA. Their diligent and vigilant efforts resulted in this fair and positive outcome. As we partner with the Bureau of Land Management on an implementation plan, we ask that you continue to stay out of the closed areas until which time the stakes are removed. A copy of the decision can be viewed at http://americansand association.org/files/isdra-order-04-0314.pdf

EPIC DECISION RE-OPENS A PORTION OF DUNES IN GLAMIS

R

ecreational visitors observing a fine flaky substance this morning at the Imperial Sand Dunes Recreation Area (ISDRA) will be pleased to hear it is not snow but judicial manna. Barely a month following argument, U.S. District Judge Susan Illston of the U.S. Northern District Court of California yesterday issued a long-awaited decision on the 2013 ISDRA management plan, ruling almost entirely on the side of the Bureau of Land Management, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and sand-rider organizations, and against the latest challenge led by the Center for Biological Diversity. The ruling sets the stage for implementation of the 2013 plan, which would allow resumption of access to areas placed off-limits to riders through “interim” closures imposed over a decade ago. The litigation over riding at the ISDRA began in 2000, and has resulted in multiple trips to Judge Illston’s courtroom where BLM, USFWS, and recreation enthusiasts have suffered multiple setbacks. The 2013 plan followed lengthy public input and was designed in response to the Court’s 2006 ruling and new critical habitat designation by the USFWS for the Peirson’s milk-vetch (PMV), the plant species of primary concern at the Dunes. Preservationist plaintiffs raised an array of challenges under the Endangered

Species Act and other laws to the new plan, but yesterday’s decision rejected those claims and upheld BLM’s plan, with the limited exception of finding that a recovery plan for the PMV is overdue and must be issued by 2019 unless the USFWS makes a specific finding that a recovery plan will not promote conservation of the species. “I have shed tears upon nearly every announcement of the Court, but this time they are tears of joy,” said Jim Bramham, who holds leadership positions with several of the recreationist organizations, including the American Sand Association and California Association of 4 Wheel Drive Clubs. “Our work will never be finished, but this vindicates our longrunning, expensive and sometimes controversial team effort to restore balance to ISDRA management,” Bramham added. The ISDRA, popularly known by many as “Glamis” for the small town within its boundaries, is located near the southern U.S. border in Imperial County, California, and spans roughly 167,000 acres. There is a broad range of management prescriptions covering the area, and over 26,000 acres have been formally designated as Wilderness, where no vehicle access is allowed. The 2013 plan would continue vehicle closures in PMV critical habitat, and allow some form of riding on about 127,000 acres. The Dunes are a prized destination for sand-riding enthusiasts throughout the country, and over 1,000,000 of them visit the area in a typical year. The rider groups intervening in the case to assist in defense of the BLM plan included the American Sand Association, San Diego Off-Road Coalition, Off-Road Business Association, American Motorcyclist Association District 37, California Association of 4 Wheel Drive Clubs, BlueRibbon Coalition, Desert Vipers, California Off-Road Vehicle Association, and High Desert Multiple Use Coalition, with funding and strategic support from EcoLogic Partners. The intervener groups were represented by David Hubbard of Carlsbad, Paul Turcke of Boise, Idaho, and Dennis Porter of Sacramento. The American Sand Association (aSa) is a nonprofit organization fighting to keep the Imperial Sand Dunes Recreation Area (ISDRA) open to off-highway vehicle use. The aSa’s primary objective is to “UNITE, INFORM and MOBILIZE” the sand duning community to protect their right to ride!

THANKS TO EVERYONE What’s Next & How Can You Help? By Bob Mason President aSa Board of Directors

T

he recent court ruling to re-open most of the temporary closures at the Imperial Sand Dunes Recreation Area (ISDRA) was indeed a victory, but not a complete victory. We did not get all of the land back and other previously open acres have been closed to camping. The fight is not over! The aSa must remain vigilant in protecting your right to recreate on public lands. aSa’s main objective is to delist the Peirson’s Milk Vetch (PMV) in order to return all of the temporary closures to motorized recreation access. aSa filed two delisting petitions in the past: both were denied. The Judge recently ordered the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) to complete a PMV recovery plan by July 31, 2019. aSa will stay active in this process. If it is determined that a third delisting petition is in order, the aSa will pursue it. However, the immediate task at hand is to support the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) in the implementation of the Judge’s order to reopen several thousand acres at ISDRA. aSa will then concentrate on the following activities: • Support the USFWS PMV recovery plan development and ultimate PMV delisting. • Maintain a high level of awareness regarding motorized recreation access concerns on public land. • Monitor and favorably influence OHV legislation through a proactive legislative affairs program. • Develop and implement the appropriate education programs relating to OHV safety and natural resource protection. • Develop and implement the required

financial plans to fund aSa activities. It took more than a decade to reopen the ISDRA recreation land temporarily closed for 13 years. Those closures were based on inadequate science. All along, the aSa’s position has been that the Facts, based on good science, would prevail. The aSa, along with several other organizations, spent over $1,000,000.00 in legal fees, legislative activities, PMV field studies, and scientific and economic analysis to make this happen. Thousands of volunteer hours put those dollars to good use. The aSa Board of Directors is proud of its accomplishments. None of this could have happened without your contribution of time and money. This has been a team effort. Your continued support of aSa activities is vital to protect what we have and work to get the rest of the temporary closures reopened. Our purpose and mission are ongoing: but only with your help. Please volunteer at www.americansandassociation.org/ volunteer/committees or donate at www.americansandassociation.org/ donate. FOX Athletes Are Victorious At The Mint

T

he 2014 General Tire Mint 400 presented by Polaris was arguably the greatest assemblage of off-road talent in history, with 57 Trick Trucks and 38 Class 1 cars battling for desert domination in front of thousands of rabid fans. When the dust cleared, Andy McMillin’s FOXequipped Trick Truck was the first to the checkered flag,

winning with a 14-minute margin over the second place finisher. “This was a huge win for us,” McMillin shared after the race. “I want to thank Steve Sourapas for giving me the opportunity to show how we stack up against the best in the business.” For his efforts, McMillin received a $10,000 payday for riding on FOX. McMillin qualified 6th, putting him on the fourth row for the side-by-side start of the race. “My strategy was to let the race come to me and not get overly anxious,” he explained. “Without the ability to prerun I was more conservative than normal on the first two laps, but it worked to our advantage. We didn’t have a single issue with the truck, and we knew that was what it would take to win.” The multitude of high horsepower competition made for a rough course, including the FOX Proving Grounds at the starting line. This one-mile stretch included some of the biggest holes and deepest ruts on the entire course, where a well-tuned suspension was more important that raw horsepower. “That course was brutal, and kept getting more so as the race went on,” McMillin confessed the day after his victory. “I am sorer today than after running the Baja 1000.” While the Trick Trucks received most of the limelight, there was plenty of great racing among the other classes as well. FOX athletes took top honors in nine classes at the Mint 400, including Jason Ruane placing first in the ultracompetitive 6100 class and 9th overall at the Mint 400. “We are down on power compared to the Trick Trucks,” Ruane commented after the race. “Our FOX suspension allows us to carry speed through terrain where other teams have to slow down.” There were 21 entries in the 6100 class, and 17 competitors in 7200, where Jeff Horsley was the winner. All of the class winners took home money from FOX as part of the company’s industry-leading contingency program.

SLOAN HAULS IN HAVASU

T

EAM Duncan Racing’s rider Mike Sloan was just plain dominant in Havasu at Round 3 of WORCS Racing on March 16. Mike won the ProAm ATV class on arguably the roughest track on the circuit by over 3 minutes 30 seconds. For Sloan it was his second straight WORCS ProAm win. I would love to honor my wife Racine Rogers who is a full-time on and off-road mom. She has been the driving force in our off-road adventures, and we are so thankful for her. She encourages all of us to have fun, but most of all to get dirty while riding. She cooks, cleans, pretty much does it all, and still finds the time to ride. She grew up in the desert environment, and has a natural love for off-roading. We love you Racine! — Chris Rogers, Palm Springs CA

Linda Davie of Placentia CA with best friend Lynn Clark at the Husky Monument in the high desert. These two off road moms really know how to plan the BEST off road trips! — Scott Clark, Goleta CA

Off Road Moms

Off roading is a way of life at our house. This is me at the finish line of the 2014 Mint 400 in my new Dragonfire Racing, RideNow Can Am Maverick built by my husband, Eric Beurrier. I love being an off road mom and as much as I love driving, I can’t wait for my son Trevor to take over the reigns! — Lacrecia Beurrier, Lake Havasu AZ

Stacey Carlos from Yorba Linda CA. We are a moto family of three. This is Mommy and son Jackson after a ride in Parker Az. — Victor Carlos

My name is Luke Fitzgerald, my Grandma and Grandpa support me in everything I do. This picture is my grandma, Jean Hetherington, riding her bike from LA to Vegas. She also races in the desert, She is a member of the Desert MC in District 37, she is 69 years old.

One of my inspirations to have fun and enjoy life. Thank you always for being there and supporting me. Love you mommy. — Leah Dannals Vista CA

Bryce Menzies Pro Lite Class winner in Round 2 Wild Horse Pass Motorsports Park Chandler AZ March 22-23, 2014, Rounds 1 & 2

Lucas Oil Off Road Racing Photos by Spinning Wheels Photography - www.spinningwheelsphotography.smugmug.com fter a long five-month off season, the Lucas Oil Off Road Racing Series, presented by GEICO, is back in action. The 2014 season is here, and after their winter hiatus, our drivers were raring to go, and today, there were plenty of fans to take in the action here at Wild Horse Pass Motorsports Park in Chandler, AZ. This season has seen a big influx of new and/or returning drivers in the series, as well as the construction of a myriad of new race vehicles during the off season, as many drivers are moving up the ranks. Today was the first chance for everyone to see all these drivers and vehicles in one place, and the action did not disappoint! Several drivers experienced a new lease on life this weekend, as they found new speed, new consistency, or both, and used these new qualities to carry them to the fray at the heads of their respective fields. No drivers are looking like given winners, and moreover, the competition is looking closer than ever, as more and more drivers have revealed themselves as legitimate threats for real results. PRO BUGGY UNLIMITED, Round 1 A huge field of open-wheelers took to the field today in the Pro Buggy Unlimited class, headed on the front row (after a four-spot inversion of the qualifying results) by cousins Garrett and Chad George. After an initial botched start, the restart went better, and Chad moved out to the lead in his #42 King Off-Road Racing Shocks/ASL Builders, Inc. Funco. Garrett assumed second in the #71 Anenberg/ Mickey Thompson Funco, with Bradley Morris third in the #24 Maxxis/K&N Alumi Craft, Steven Greinke fourth in the #1 SC Fuels/Fortin Racing, Inc. Racer, and Randy Minnier fifth in the #59 Bay City Electric Works/Leviton Alumi Craft.

The top five held their positions over the first three laps, but on lap four, leader Chad slowed going into turn four after missing a shift, and that allowed Garrett to sneak by and open up a little lead before his cousin could get back up to speed in second spot. Two laps later, Morris slowed going through and out of turn three; he was now running without second gear. Morris dropped to fifth place, and Minnier leapfrogged Greinke to move up to third as the two scrambled to miss hitting Morris. Morris dropped another spot to sixth after Dave Mason got by him on the next lap in his #65 Loan Mart/VP Racing Fuels Alumi Craft. Up front, Chad very gradually reeled his cousin back in over the course of several laps, and by lap 12, he was right on Garrett's back bumper. Just as things were heating up, though, a full course caution was thrown after Eric Fitch came to a stop out on track. When racing resumed, Garrett and Chad continued to lead the way, with Greinke back up to third, Minnier fourth, and Mason fifth. Mason got by Minnier on the outside out of turn two on the restart lap, but then dropped two spots to sixth with a bad run along the high line in the either/or section; this put Morris back in the top five. On the final lap, Greinke spun at turn three, and both Minnier and Mason were caught out as well. Greinke suffered race-ending damage from the resulting collision, and both Minnier and Mason fell out of the top five. Up front, Garrett George broke a long streak of "close but no cigar" runs, as he picked up his first career win - congratulations Garrett! Chad George gave the family a one-two finish today by picking up second, while Morris rounded out the podium in third. Robb Harvey was fourth in the #18 BF Goodrich Tires/Dirt Skins Alumi Craft, and fifth went to Larry Job in the #7 MavTV/ Toyo Tires Alumi Craft.

Travis PeCoy, 11th Mod Kart Class, Round 2

PRO 2 UNLIMITED, Round 2 The Pro 2 Unlimited race was a very exciting one, and after suffering severe rear suspension damage on his all-new truck yesterday, Bryce Menzies took his backup truck right to the front today. Menzies and the #7 Red Bull/Discount Tire Ford led the way after lap one, ahead of Brian Deegan in the #38 Rockstar/Makita Ford, RJ Anderson in the #37 Polaris RZR/Monster Energy Ford, Rob MacCachren in the #21 Rockstar/Makita Ford, and Carl Renezeder in the #17 Lucas Oil/General Tire Nissan. On lap two, MacCachren somewhat forced Anderson up to the high line at the either/or, and then used the low line himself to make the pass up to third spot. Lap five saw a full course caution, as the right front tire and wheel came off of Mike Porter's truck. Racing resumed at the end of the lap, and on the next lap, Renezeder forced Anderson hard up into the upper bank as the two ran down the low line at the either/or;

A

Renezeder moved through and up to fourth as a result. The race was getting pretty rough up and down the field, and the resulting debris forced a full course caution on lap nine. Racing picked up again at the end of the next lap, with Menzies, Deegan, MacCachren, Renezeder, and Anderson holding the top five spots. Renezeder got a great jump on the restart, but wasn't able to turn that into anything. Anderson did make something happen, though, as he got back by both Renezeder and MacCachren after MacCachren was a bit slow starting into the low line at the either/or coming out of turn four. MacCachren held Renezeder up, and Anderson streaked around the high line to jump from fifth to third, just ahead of another full course caution (Rodrigo Ampudia was stopped between turns one and two). The green flag came back out at the end of lap 12, and despite a couple of strong attacks by MacCachren, Anderson held on to his third place on the restart lap. Renezeder, however, then got by them both after the three went three-wide over the big ski jump out of turn two on the next lap. Further debris forced yet another full course yellow at the end of the lap, and under yellow, MacCachren jumped into the Hot Pits for what was likely a flat tire. Robby Woods inherited MacCachren's fifth place, and on the restart lap, he picked off Anderson on the high line as Anderson got pretty out of shape down on the low line. Three laps later, Renezeder was now really making a race of it for second with Deegan. The two traded places twice between turns one and two, but Renezeder then made the pass stick coming out of turn two. Meanwhile, Menzies had more or less checked out up front, as he sped home to take a commanding win in his team's first weekend since returning to the series full time this year. Renezeder had a solid second place in an allnew truck, Deegan was third, Woods was fourth, and after Anderson spun at turn two, it was Myan Spaccarelli in the #12 Tonka Off-Road /Amsoil Chevrolet who picked up fifth. Round 1 of the five-race SCORE World Desert Championship was held on a challenging, weather-shortened 219-mile course that started and finished in San Felipe on the northern portion of Mexico’s majestic Baja California peninsula. Originally scheduled to cover 274 miles, SCORE was forced after the race had started

early Saturday morning to significantly re-route the course because an area called the summit was impassable due to the torrential rain that pelted the northern section of the race course Friday and during the night on Saturday. SCORE CEO/President Roger Norman made the decision to re-route after the motorcycle and ATV classes had left the start line Saturday morning starting at 6 a.m. To continue the race, SCORE moved the start time for the car and truck classes two hours from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. while he and his staff re-routed the motorcycle and ATV classes from race mile 120 on the original course to a spot along Mexico highway 3. The motorcycle and ATV classes were held from continuing for nearly four hours while SCORE official marked a new section of desert to race on to rejoin the original course near El Chinero. The overall and Open motorcycle winner was the team of Ricky Brabec, Oak Hills, Calif./ Shane Esposito, Menifee, Calif./Max Eddy Jr, Barstow, Calif., who split driving in the No. 4x Monster Energy THR Motorsports Kawasaki KX450F. The trio overcame a battle for over half the race with Colton Udall on the No. 1x Honda CRF450X, finishing in 3:53:33 to give Kawasaki its first overall motorcycle victory in this race since 1996. Finishing second overall was Las Vegas’ Tim Herbst/ Larry Roeseler, Boulevard, Calif., with a time of 3:36:51 at 60.60mph, five minutes, 24 seconds behind Vildosola Jr in the No. 19 Monster Energy Terrible Herbst Motorsports Ford F-150. Motorcycle winner Ricky Brabec commented at the end of the race, “The first 40 miles

of the race was good with Colton Udall (1x who finished second) and I going back and forth. I’ve never started a Mexico race and I’ve never finished a Mexico race before so it was pretty awesome. These guys (my teammates) are all good partners. We delivered the bike all in one piece.” The SCORE season opener was held in Mexico’s picturesque fishing village of San Felipe. The town is located 125 miles south of the U.S. border on the East side of the Baja California peninsula along the azure waters of the tranquil Sea of Cortez. Entries came from 24 U.S. States and seven countries competing in 35 Pro and 6 Sportsman classes for cars, trucks, motorcycles and ATVs. he AMA Western Checkpoint Enduro Championship, brought to you by SRT Offroad and Fasst Co, is now in full swing and with Round 3 in the books we have seen three different victors in as many rounds. With Purvines Racing’s Nick Burson and the legendary DA8 founder Destry Abbot taking the first two rounds it was time for a few more big names to step it up! Returning to the desert of Southern California, hosted by United MC, this would mark the first of two time-keeper format enduro’s. This would mean a lot of riders would have to dust off their computers and see if they still worked. “I actually run old school,” said West Chec Director Erek Kudla. “And lucky me as soon as I put my odo on Friday night it didn’t work, so we had to figure something out and quick.” Kudla would eventually get a Pro Comp 3 (the Checkmate Predecessor) and run it as a straight odometer. Burson would have his share of issues. “I really don’t even know how to do a time keeper and this would be my first time doing it on my own. I don’t know what I kept doing but I burned 2 checks on the second loop. It was a bummer.” One rider who would more than benefit from the format was reigning series champion, and ISDE multi-medalist Jordan Brandt. While he would garner a few emergency points on the first two loops he would enter the extremely technical third loop clean of route points and would be able to put the hammer down on the competition. “The first loop was really tough with the super high winds blowing all the markings down and being on the first row. I was doing circles a few times but was able to make all the checks, barely.” said Brandt at the end of the day. Brandt would power through the technical rock sections that the Cougar Buttes staging area is known for, dropping a total of 6-points on the entire course taking both the Round 3 Continued next page

CALVMX 1st Annual 3-Wheeler National March 15, 2014 - Cahuilla Creek MX, Anza CA By Steve Caro - Photos by Kathryn Caro o you remember when music videos were actually on MTV, no cell phones or the Internet existed and local riding areas and racetracks were filled with threewheeled ATV’s of all sizes, shapes and colors? Banished from production by the late 1980’s due to litigation issues and soon eliminated from organized racing, the unique machines languished in obscurity until finally getting their chance to return to the track almost 30 years later, courtesy of CALVMX. Introduced as a bold experiment during the 2013 vintage racing season participation gradually grew in number throughout their initial season and were included in the majority of the 2014 CALVMX scheduled events. As a result, it seemed only natural to offer the racers a chance to have their own exclusive event, open to any and all three wheeled machines. One competitor put it succinctly prior to the start of the race day, “We just want a place to race after being banned for over 20 years.” Cahuilla Creek MX was the site for the first annual Three-Wheel National event. The Vet track was modified to suit the machines and it provided ample challenge to all competitors. Adding importance to the day was the presence of Smitty Schmidt, one of the most

Known for ironmanning the Baja 1000, hitting all the extreme races such as King of the Motos and soon to head out to Erzberg, he was right at home on the final loop only dropping 7. Combined with the 1 point he earned on the second loop he would secure his place on the podium. Finishing an astonishing 3rd overall would be B 250 racer Shawn Moore! ull Throttle MC was host to a fast course consisting of four 25 mile loops over familiar and some new territory that the regular riders had not seen before. Over 110 riders blew off the line with just enough of a breeze to make perfect conditions for a great start without incident until the turn at the bomb run. Like clockwork within 25 minutes #42 Kenton Prather sponsored by All American KTM came into sight with #155 James Schaeffer and #1s Carey Lincoln sponsored by Coyne Powersports battling for 2nd to give Kenton a 2 minute lead. It was all the momentum he needed to stretch it out all four loops for the win. First overall 1st Open #42 Kenton Prather on a KTM 300 out of Ramona, CA set the pace. After getting a bad start he worked through the pack to regain the lead. He had to charge into a gully not letting up to find clean air. He made it look easy even coming back from having the flu he kept it up without any trouble to take the checkered flag leading all 4 loops. Second overall 2nd Open #2 Grant Stately riding a KTM 300 from Jamul, CA sponsored by Helix Pest Control found the first turn a bit crowded when he got together with #1m Todd Barnhill. Crashing together Grant got up and stopped to help Todd who reinjured his collar bone. Trying to make up time he laid it down again in the dunes messing up the bars. He found his groove after his crew adjusted everything to send him on his way and managed to move through the pack to capture the 2nd overall. Third overall 1st Vet #182v Eric Biddlecome on a KTM 530 from San Diego, CA ended up last bike off the first line due to ignition problems. Working through the dust he laid it down five miles into the first loop knocking boots going toe to toe with #5v Jason Morgan for most of the 3rd lap. It gave him an adrenaline rush going into the last loop. Slowing to check on downed rider #99v Henry Daley, he crashed amid the pile up himself. Then getting his wits about him he realized he had worked his way up to 2nd overall. He kept on the gas for his win in class. Fourth Overall 1st Senior #1s Carey Lincoln, riding a Kawasaki 450 from Brawley CA got a good start off the line soon to realize he was losing radiator fluid late into the first

loop. He later found out a branch had pierced the radiator. His crew kept filling it at the pits as he babied it to still hold on to the 4th overall and class win. He almost took a turn for even more bad luck when #155 James Schaeffer got together when they ran out of room heading toward the dunes. Schaeffer got the short end of the stick as Lincoln saved it, but he was not hurt. The bike held together for the finish and is now getting a full overhaul. First open Amateur Marcus Mohammad #6 on a Yamaha from Imperial CA had a good run coming back from a spinal injury at the Buzz Bomb. He found himself running with the pack all day to take his class win in the last 5 miles going all out with #5v Justin Morgan to get past him just before the finish on the last hill. First Vet Amateur #5v Jason Morgan on a Honda 450 CRX from Alpine CA found himself in the company of the big dogs off the start only to have a bush call his name. He ran most of the first two loops with #90s Robbie Pippin back and forth until Pippin lost a head gasket and dropped back. He gave it up to the young gun #6 Marcus Mohammad at the end but had a great run with the variety of the course. First Open Novice #317 Jake Hinkle riding a Yamaha 450 from Yuma AZ jumped to 3rd off the start and settled in with the pack of 10. He had a reality check when he spun out in the dunes, but held ground to the class win. First Quad Overall 1st Quad Expert (2Q) Gilbert Rascon on a Honda out of Imperial CA got 4th off the line and soon found 1st place three miles into the first loop in the whoops section dicing it out with Alonzo Domingo. Once he passed him he stuck to a pace for the win with no problems to enjoy the challenging course and finish 14th overall with the bikes. Third overall 1st Woman Quad #1w Kristen Matlock on a Honda TRX 450 from El Cajon CA sponspred by DID Chains did not disappoint giving nothing up running with the boys. She had a flawless run sticking to her own pace to pick through the pack for the class win. Wayne Matlock who is retired from racing quads couldn’t stand it and jumped on a bike and ran to a 5th overall 2nd Vet Exert finish as experience prevailed taking the hole shot off the start and turning more than a few heads seeing him on a bike. AMA West Hare Scramble Round 4

Get-Xtr-Eme Motorcycle Endurance Series Round 1

March 15-16, 2014 – The Ranch, Anza CA Hosted by Get-Xtr-Eme/VCMC By Erek Kudla - Photos by Grumpy

T

he 2014 AMA West Hare Scramble Championship has seen it’s fair share of shake ups so far this season and Round 4 would be no exception! Close to 12 miles of tight, technical single track through the Cahuilla Tribal Lands of Anza CA staged out of the famous Ranch awaited the racers. Overall points leader Jacob Argubright aboard his factory Husqvarna had been hoping for much more technical riding while the scores of Northern California racers who made the trek south were more than happy to return to the tight trails. Off the start Argubright would take quick control of the pack into the first corner. Pro 2 Stroke racers BRP’s Nic Garvin and ISDE Silver Medalist Nick Hamill would be right on his tail straight into the first set of trees. At the tail end of the pro wave the 3 Bro’s KTM of Ryan Kudla and the KLIM/FMF KTM of Justin Bonita were battling through the hanging dust in the trees. Bonita would make a quick pass on Kudla and show the speed he brought south with him. “In the straights I could pull away but as soon as he got by and we got back into the

tight stuff he was gone!” exclaimed Kudla. By the time the course got onto the Carlsbad Replica track Bonita had already made his way into second overall. Argubright had what seemed to be a comfortable buffer between him and the advancing Bonita with over 30 seconds of space through the scoring chicane after lap one. Almost nearly a minute later Garvin and Kudla would come flying down the finish ski jump built diagonal down the Ranch’s Loretta Lynn’s Qualifying course. While Garvin would check up Kudla would take the opportunity to sky over his head and into 3rd overall and 1st Pro 2-Stroke just before the chicane. The top two riders would be posting under 30 minute lap times after hooking up together. Bonita would continue to push Argubright hoping to force a mistake as Argubright was obviously not as comfortable racing through barely bar width manzanita. “I was really hoping for gnarlier as in rocks!” said Argubright “The GXE in Reno was right up my alley, but chasing the Hare Scramble series I really have to get a hang of these trees.” As the leaders would come in on their 3rd lap, they would enter the pits only 3 seconds apart and leave the same way into the tree section designed and laid out by Ryan Huges nearly 10 years ago. Now they would start to get deep into the lappers and Argubright would run into the back of one falling over. He would

Husqvarna’s Jacob Argubright would battle hard for another 2nd Overall and would extend his points lead.

Justin Bonita would take 2 wins on the weekend. First at a Northern California local Hare Scramble and then drive all the way to Southern California for the AMA West Hare Scramble.

get up quickly but the front end would wash out again. “I saw Jake [Argubright] on the ground and thought this was my chance!” exclaimed Bonita. “So I got around him and just ‘goosed’ it!” Now that Bonita was in the lead he would be able to set the pace and stretch out a little bit of a lead so he would be safer in the rock sections. Coming in for the white flag lap he would already have a minute gap posting the fastest lap time of the day at 28:13 to Argubright’s 29:28. While Kudla would hold onto a solid 3rd overall he wouldn’t be alone. His 3 Bro’s KTM team mate Nick Stover would catch to the rear wheel of Kudla from the A 250 line and on adjusted he would overtake him coming through on lap 3 in 3rd overall. With the added pressure Kudla would start to bump up his lap times and get a gap again regaining the position. At the finish it was Bonita taking the overall victory, his second on the weekend after taking the win at his local D36 Hollister Hare scramble. Argubright would retain 2nd overall and extend his points lead in the overall championship to 56 points over Morgan Crawford who would finish 5th overall on the day. Kudla would post one of his fastest times of the day and secure 3rd and the GXE Pro 2 Stroke victory followed by Stover in 4th and 1st A 250. The next round of the AMA Western Hare Scramble Series heads back North to Shasta Lake CA for more trees and tight single track racing! For complete results visit www.mototally.com/gxe/results.aspx

he fifteenth annual Yamaha Quad X Championshipis underway with eight rounds of Quad (ATV) racing which started with round one at the series home track, Glen Helen Raceway. This second round was held at Perris Raceway and was the first time this reporter witnessed a Quad race there in eleven years of covering the track. The 2014 version of Quad-X will be staying in the Golden State and making stops at The Ranch in Anza, Lucas Oil MX (Starwest) in Perris, and Competitive Edge in Hesperia as well as finishing the series at Glen Helen Raceway. Two time Production Pro Champion, David Haagsma, has continued to race the WORCS series but reportedly is not attending this year’s Quad-X to defend his title. His H&M Motorsports teammate, Beau Baron, a regular in the series the past few years is focusing on his OffRoad racing in the Quads as well as Side by Sides. Yamaha’s Dustin Nelson is running wild in the Pro class winning the first two rounds and looking good for another Quad-X title. The skies were blue and welcoming for this round two, let’s race. Largest class of the round was the Pro-AM sporting a healthy pack of fifteen racers and staged an epic moto one battle between Levi Shirley and Kory Ellis. Keith Taylor leading the herd of the four wheel variety over the mildly technical Perris Raceway layout is under pressure from Shirley and Ellis. Shirley taking up second with Ellis dodging his roost in third, but Shirley into the lead on lap three and Ellis assumes second on lap four and is on the case of Shirley. The two racers were within three Quad lengths or closer as they jostled for position with Shirley pulling out his complete bag of tricks to keep Ellis at bay. Lap after lap these two racers expertly displayed an artistic exhibition of elite racing without any mishaps. After an intense moto one, Shirley just holds off Ellis at the finish for the moto win, Ellis, Daniel Ramirez third, Keith Taylor fourth, and Josh Pursell fifth. In moto two Ellis was initially behind Shirley but found his groove early and passed Shirley for the lead, Shirley second, Ramirez in third, and Pursell fourth. Sharing the track with the Production Pro class, the Pro-AM went twenty minutes and Ellis appearing fit pulled away from Shirley for the moto win, Shirley second, Ramirez third, Pursell fourth, and Taylor fifth. The top five finish up with Ellis (2-1) for the overall win, Shirley (1-2) second, Ramirez (3-3), Pursell (5-4), and Taylor (4-6) for fifth overall. Japanese racer Yuki Sato, sits in the second spot as Edgar Martinez nails the start in moto one of the 450 Production Intermediate. Sato scoops the top spot on lap three of the fifteen minute moto

and tears away from his competitors for the moto win, Utah racer Aubre King scrambles his way into second after battling with Talon Fincher, Fincher finished third, Martinez fourth, and Diego Urrea fifth at the checkers. Ramirez rocketed to the first turn, but Sato calmly railed around him and to the lead as they exited the first turn into the large Perris table. Sato checked out leading from turn one on for the moto two win. King in second by lap two but Sato is just too much as King is second at the checkers, Ramirez had a fantastic start and stayed solid in third, Fincher fourth and Parker Campbell fifth in moto two. The top five overall includes Sato (1-1) first, King (2-2), Martinez (4-3) third, Fincher (3-4), and Campbell (6-5) fifth overall. Dan Champion was off to the land of first place in moto one of the 450 Production Novice with Tyler Bunker in second but quickly rolled into the lead. Andy Chavez was going to have something to say about that, as he worked his way into the front and to the lead for the moto win, Bunker second, Champion third, Travis Bachor fourth, and Britney Latimer fifth. Bunker busted out the holeshot in moto two but Chavez closed in fast setting up and dialing in an inside pass at the Cory Ellis on the left, diving base of the Perris inside of Levi Shirley on the table landing early in right in the Pro-AM moto one the moto. Chavez separated from any threat and motored home for the win. Bunker was soon under attack by Champion and succumbed after a prolonged defensive effort but relinquished the position to Champion in for second, Bunker third, Bachor fourth, and Latimer fifth. The final five overall starts with winner Chavez (1-1), Champion (3-2) second, Bunker (2-3), Bachor (4-4) fourth, and Latimer fifth overall. pack in fifth. Second place Holmes iron-fisted in his pursuit of Ott as we reach the latter laps, Flores in third but Petton IV barreling in looking for the go-around. On the last lap, second place Holmes throwing it down into turn four but Ott has the advantage. Holmes relentlessly powers his steed inside and into the front stretch just over a bike length behind Ott, but Ott goes down two bike lengths before the checkers and Holmes races by for the win. Ott had a high speed slide out on the outside of the back stretch near the back penalty line surrendering the victory to Holmes and was reportedly okay. Flores was able to keep Petton IV secured and came in at second, Petton third, Zaden Florez fourth, and Jacob Cascio fifth. Ott left the track in the eighth spot but came away with a win in the 85 Open to limit his disappointment. Open Amateur racer Rich Hanson slid out in his heat race, but he shook himself off during intermission and rebounded in the Main ready to go. Hanson rose out of turn two into the backstretch with the lead at the green light of the eight lap Main. Williams in second but Brandon Watters sped inside of him on turn two, and was second by lap two attempting to keep Hanson within range. Watters in the pass zone for Hanson at the middle stages of the race but unable to close the deal and Hanson stayed in the clean air for the Open Amateur win. Watters had his own concerns with the Flat Track fire of Williams in his draft but Watters sealed the second, Williams third, Allison Stacey fourth, and Alex Crosby fifth. The son of former Grand National Star John Hately, AJ Hately, is now taking his turn in the glory as he throws his hat into the SCFTA Pro class points hunt. Sitting out the first two rounds Hately had his Kawasaki of Simi Valley’s machine ready to go for the twenty lap Pro Main. Past SCFTA Pro Champion David Bush displayed a resurgence with the lead on lap two, Zachery Lenholf of Fresno in second, Hately third. Lenholf finds a path around Bush for the lead and Hately follows along a half lap later now in second, Bush third. Hately kept his course steady finding the lead before the midway point and proceeding to pull away for the win. fter a zippy first two rounds in the Pros that featured AMA’s 2014 Grand National Champion Brad Baker along with National numbers like Mike Rush and Sammy Halbert, Southern California Flat Track Association is now into the third round of the series at the popular Perris Raceway oval. The core of Southern California Flat Track is exemplified in the likes of spirited thirteen year old racer, Alyssa Flores. Starting out on 65’s Flores took her bumps as the leaders roared off in her beginning years, but with her Yamaha YZ85 by her side and showing increasing skills at the end of the 2013 season, she is ready to game and has been running near the front the last few rounds to prove it. Her confidence is blooming but she admittedly has room for improvement, and the Ron’s Real Engine racer thanks her family for their support as she pursues a Championship in the 85 Open and 85 2-Stroke Novice. Now brace for the racing action as we roar into round four, let’s race. Travis Petton IV won the 85 2-Stroke Novice heat but it was “Galloping” Grant Holmes who would prevail in the Main with skill and a bit of good fortune. James Ott has sped his way into the front of the 85 classes doing the deed in the Main, in front at the onset with Holmes in second, Flores third, Zaden Florez, and Petton IV stuck in the

Gardner, Hess double trouble at Spring Kickoff Series opener

AV Motoplex, Lancaster CA March 9, 2014

Blake Gardner flew to wins in the 65cc 9-11 age and 65cc Open class

P

ristine racing conditions along with a perfectly groomed track greeted a good turnout of riders at the A.V. Motoplex Ride Park for the opening round of the M2X Racing’s Spring Kickoff Series. KTMmounted Blake Gardner and Honda rider Austin Hess found the conditions to their liking, as they each went home with double class victories. Gardner started things off with a wire to wire win in the first 65cc 9-11 age class moto. Cole Kautz chased Gardner around the track enroute to his second place finish ahead of Rocco Studer, Jacob Brown and Erik Roder. Gardner duplicated his first moto performance with another decisive win in moto two, leading from the drop of the gate to the waving of the checkers. Kautz and Brown argued over second place for much of the race with Kautz pulling away slightly during the closing stages. Studer went 3-2 for fourth overall behind Brown with Roder (5-5) rounding out the top five. Gardner was flawless in both 65cc Open motos as he led from start to finish to go uncontested for the first place trophy. Studer ran in second place for most of the first moto with Brown camped out on his back fender. Brown kept pushing Studer and finally made the pass on

the white flag lap. T.J. Sanders would cross the line in fourth, followed by Nathan Callahan, Ashton Stevens and Ashton Smoot. As Gardner disappeared at the front of the field in moto two, Brown and Studer continued their battle over the runner-up position, with Brown keeping Studer at bay for the entire moto for a hardfought second place finish and second in the overall standings. Sanders was again fourth over Callahan and Smoot. Hess jumped out to an early lead in the first 85cc Open race and steadily pulled away from everyone to greet the checkers with nearly 15-seconds to spare. Nolan Colborn finished all by himself in second place, ahead of a good battle for third between Tristen Mitchell and Gardner (on his 65cc KTM) in which Gardner prevailed. Hess was equally impressive in moto two as he won the drag race to the first turn and then proceeded to motor away from the pack for a double-moto sweep of the class. Colborn held down second place for the entire race with Shannon Edwards fighting her way up into a third place finish for third overall, over the 3-6 of Gardner. Hess returned to put on a riding clinic in the 85cc 12-13 age class where he dominated both motos with ease. Colborn also returned for another pair of runner-up finishes over Mikey Lundin (3-3) and Jarod Harris (4-4). Kawasaki-mounted Tommy Cook whipped up an overall win in the 85cc Beginner ranks with a perfect 1-1 performance. Gage Nelson sliced his way up into a pair of second place finishes with Brian Nolind going 3-3. Ricky Baltazar (4-4) and Matthew Callahan (6-5) claimed fourth and fifth overall respectively. Ryan Koopman turned his advantage out of the gate in the first 450cc Novice moto into an eventual win. Austin Keys worked his way up into a second place finish, followed by Matt Bird, Adam Moore and Brian Brady. Keys holeshot moto two and was soon being pressured by Moore. Moore hounded Keys for the entire race and would have to be content with a close second place finish at the checkers.

T

he Idaho Round is always a rush for the young racers as it is the first of the series where all classes, except peewee’s, are combined into one. At the drop of the banner it was Super Mini racer Karson Thomas with the holeshot, catching the Hare and taking home $50 provided by Dirt Inc and all their great sponsors. Reigning champion BTO Sport’s Jarett Megla was around 10th and would work his way

Koopman’s third place finish in the moto was good enough for second overall in the final standings over the 4-2 of Moore. Bird went 3-5 for fourth. Aaron Alfrey holeshot the 450cc Beginner opening moto and would go the distance for the win. Timothy Lee came from midpack off the start to claim second at the checkers over Rick Smith and Steven Derra. Lee got a much better start in moto two and parlayed that into a second moto win and the first place trophy. Alfrey finished second in the moto and second overall, over the 3-4 of Smith and 5-3 of Dayton Maute.

through the field quick and come in on the first lap already in control of the race. He would already enjoy a 30 second gap over Super Mini points leader Blais Racing’s Braydon Bland, but Bland has come back from deficits before to take the win so he was nowhere near out of the game! In 3rd on the first lap would be Notch Peak Racing’s Kolton Christensen. Christensen has finished both 2nd and 3rd this season so far and was looking to take the top box for the second time in his young career but today would not be his day. He would hit a cattle guard crooked and take a big tumble. He would suffer a fractured back but after a quick flight to the hospital and surgery he is already all bolted up and on his way to a speedy recovery. A fleet of Utah boys aboard Kawasaki’s would take over the next 5 spots and would battle for the entire Hour and a Half race! Eagle Mountain Utah’s Jagger Wanlass would pilot his KX 100 from a literal dead last start to 3rd overall on the final lap! Payson Utah’s Burke Barnes would hold on for 4th overall only 7 seconds down

followed by the Notch Peak KTM of Austin Phillips from Price Utah in 5th Overall. 3 Bros Racing’s Hagen Boyce would have a race long battle with T.O. Powersports Racing’s Mason Matthies in the Junior Mini Class. Matthies would seem to have his third win locked up until he ran out of gas! A crack in his tank on the last lap would leave him pushing his bike until a course worker helped him with a little bit of fuel. Boyce would take his first win of the season and now sits in 2nd in points behind Matthies who was able to salvage 2nd Jr. Mini. Local racer Cole Bailey from Nampa Idaho would work his way from 6th to take 3rd in class. In the Micro Mini class Edge Powersports Jack Anderson and Moto Tech Racing’s Eric Burdell would go back and forth as well but when Burdell took a big tumble he would have to soldier up for 2nd in class. He still leads the points but with lots of racers following the entire series this season he is nowhere near safe from his competitors! The Pee Wee class was next and at the drop of the banner the 4-8 year old racers

Andrew Shultz leads Cole Timboe on the final two laps of racing

H

ondamounted Matt Simpson came out on top in a couple of hard-fought moto wins to claim the overall honors on the 450 Intermediate class, during round two of M2X Racing’s Spring Kickoff Series, held at the A.V. Motoplex Ride Park. Simpson wasted little time in making his way to the front of the field in moto one and was soon joined by James Wilcox. Wilcox had his KTM latched on to the back fender of Simpson and was shadowing his every move just waiting for a mistake to happen. That mistake never materialized as Simpson kept Wilcox at bay all the way to the checkers. Daniel Cortines worked his way around a fast-starting Spencer Burns to finish in third with Mike Epstein rounding out the top five. Wilcox was quickest out of the gate in moto two and would lead the charge for a little over a lap before Simpson pushed him back to second place. Wilcox stayed glued to Simpson and the lead duo was soon joined by Cortines, making for a great three-rider battle over the top spot. Cortines managed to find a way around Wilcox near the midway point and kept Simpson in check. Simpson kept his cool and stayed just out of the reach of Cortines to see the checkers first for a sweep of the class. Cortines’ 3-2 topped the 2-3 of Wilcox for second overall, with Epstein going 5-4 to edge out the 4-5 of Burns for fourth. Josh Briggs proved to be just too much for the competition in the opening 250 Novice moto as he carved his way into the lead on lap one were off aboard their 50cc sleds! Out to an early lead was DMC’s Andrew Shultz. He would stretch his lead out to nearly 2 minutes on the first lap as Blais Racing’s Cole Timboe took a spill in the first corner. Timboe would make his way through the field and catch up right behind Shultz on the 4th lap. Timboe woud make his move on lap 5 and Shultz was hoping to keep the battle going but a big fall would put him back by a full minute. Timboe would take his first win of the season while defending his title and Shultz would come through in 2nd followed by Caldwell Idaho’s James Chandler

and was never challenged. The real race on the track was for second place between Ryan Nolan, Conley Kautz and Thomas Wilcox. This battle for the runner-up position would last the entire moto with Nolan prevailing in the end. Wilcox was all over Nolan’s rear wheel for third with Kautz an equally close fourth at the checkers. Jared Reid held off Jonny Crovetti for fifth at the finish. Moto two was all Briggs’ as he led every inch of the race and pulling out to a comfortable lead in the process. Nolan gated in second place and after a couple of challenges from Kautz and Wilcox managed to slip away to secure the second place trophy for his efforts. Kautz finished third for third overall, ahead of the 3-6 of Wilcox and 5-4 of Reid. Mathew Malpartida holeshot the first 85cc Beginner moto but it was Parker Benton running out front by the completion of lap one. Benton went the distance for the win with Gage Nelson overcoming a midpack start to finish in second place ahead of Brian Nolind, Ricky Baltazar, Mathewe Callahan and Andrew Delgado. Things were reversed off the start in moto two as Gage had his Suzuki running out front while Benton was buried in the back of the pack. Benton started picking off riders and by the time in 3rd. Shultz still holds the points lead but Timboe is staying right in the hunt. For complete results see www.mototally.com/nhha/youth/results.aspx OVERALL SUPER MINI/JR MINI/GIRLS/65: 1. SCFTA Flat Track Round 4, April 5, 2014, Perris Raceway, Perris CA Article & Photos by Rodney Rutherford

Danny Stinson (4), Larry Earhart (16), Jim Lundgren (70), and Jeff Johnson (87) in the Senior Vet +50 Expert Heat. Johnson won the Main and the Bomber Main as well

e are into the fourth of the twelve date SCFTA annual Championship series. The entries fell in at 123 for eighteen Main races with the Open Novice split into an A and B Main and two heats. With scratched record consistency, I will repeat my mantra, some of the best racing occurs in the Youth classes as several racers like Clayton Williams, “Galloping” Grant Holmes, Travis Petton IV, James Ott, Jaycee Jones, Alyssa Flores, and Allison Stacey carry the torch for the future, and with new racers like 50cc mini racer Paul Joyce showing up the future is bright for SCFTA. The next round will be on May 17, so let’s fire up for the action on this crisp Southern California evening. Paul Joyce was spending the night at the motocross section awaiting the following day’s event, and his Dad decided to bring him over to his first night of Flat Track racing and see how it would go. The well mannered racer skipped over the Beginner class and went straight to the 50 2-Stroke Novice. SCFTA regular Colin Petton and Ashton Carlson were 1-2 racing into lap two but Joyce made the move around Carlson and into second by lap three and speeding in on Colin Petton. Dialing the gas on, Joyce exited out of the front stretch into turn one on the outside of Petton powering outside of him for the lead and race win, Colin Petton second, and a very respectable charge by inter-class racer Tanner Richey. Richey was pushing his tiny 50 hard in the latter stages of the race blitzing by Carlson on to the 50 4-Stroke Novice win. Travis Petton has made the step to the big bikes this season racing in the Youth 250 Open and was third on the day, he also went to a wire to wire win in the 85 Open. The 85 2Stroke Novice green is lit and Holmes is up to his old tricks jumping the pack on the start with the hole-shot, Petton and Ott in second and third respectively. Travis Petton IV in the front

sat in the lead by lap three and kept the spot to the checkers for the B Main win. AJ Hately has settled into a groove winning round three Pro Main and is marking the 2014 SCFTA Pro title if he keeps up his victorious path. In his heat he settled in second behind Colt Foster studying lines, eventually riding around him late in the heat for the win and extra confidence going into the Main. Hately out of the pack and to the lead by the time they hit the back stretch in the twenty lap Main, putting the gas to the grindstone he opened a lead over Joe Roberts and Colt Foster. Hately clearing the air in the point while Foster stands in at second with Roberts in his draft in third on lap six. Robert Bush in fourth as Nick Gil has the fifth spot. Hately runs away from the pack for the win, his second SCFTA 2014 Pro win. Roberts looking for a way around Foster makes a last lap attack in the inside of turn three, Roberts dives hard inside and momentarily shows a wheel but Foster fires

on lap two, Ott lays it out on the outside line in turn one and powers around Holmes for second as Holmes falls back to third. Petton is untouchable on this night in the 85 ranks and builds a nice cushion in route to his second win of the evening. The fight for second was lively as Holmes motored up to Ott and Alyssa Flores joined the fray. Ott holds on to second as Alyssa Flores finishes in his draft for third. After winning his heat, Aaron Guidacan was a tad eager in the Main of the Open Novice A Main, jumping the red light and to the penalty line he went in the twelve racer Main., Scott Hanson takes the green and is in first with Parker Earhart and Henry Canan taking up third. Canan showing impatience before Scott Hanson gets away, forces his way into the inside on turn two and moves past Earhart for a second on Paul Joyce (317), Dylan Frost (13), and Adrian Campos (42) lap three and the assault for the lead is on. Canan docked in behind Scott Hanson and started working the outside for a passing line. On the white flag lap Canan is pushing leader Scott Hanson hard and punches it at turn four in the charge for the checkers. Hanson on the inside just nips Canan at the checkers for the win, but they come together and Canan comes off the left side of his bike and his legs are sucked into the rear wheel of Scott Hanson’s bike locking it up. Besides an initial panic of Canan’s postcheckers transfer to Scott Hanson’s bike taking him for ride, he was okay for a well earned second. Earhart rode in for third, Harmon fourth, and Jim Medlin fifth. Josh Welch

CALVMX/AHRMA/100%

VINTAGE MOTOCROSS Round 3, March 16, 2014 Cahuilla Creek MX, Anza CA By Steve Caro Photos by Kathryn Caro ound three of the 2014 CALVMX/AHRMA/ 100% vintage motocross series saw a return to familiar surroundings at Cahuilla Creek MX Park. Clear skies, moderate temperatures and wind made a great race day. This round carried extra poignancy as the club saluted the late Eddy Pierre-Jerome, the longtime club member who passed away during the previous round of racing. With several members of his family in attendance, it was announced that the traditional Ironman class would now be called the Eddy Pierre-Jerome Ironman class. The salute included a parade lap in his honor. Jerome’s beloved I-T Yamaha was ridden by former factory pro Scott Burnworth. The track was literally filled with bikes from all eras of vintage racing during the tribute lap. In the Sportsman 250 Expert class, the fatherson team of Clark and Parker Jones put on a demonstration of just how fast a vintage machine with four inches of rear suspension and seven inches of front travel can be ridden. Lining up their CR High Performance CZ’s next to each other it was “Papa” Clark grabbing the lead as the pack exited out of the starting area, with Parker in hot pursuit, followed by Loren Dimond (Kaw) in third. Clark set a blistering pace throughout the moto, which was only matched by Parker. The two were never more than two to three bike lengths apart. Parker kept the pressure on, but at the checkers it was Clark with the win, Parker second and Dimond third. The start of moto two saw Clark power into the lead as the pack funneled its way into the back section of the course. Parker followed close behind

with Dimond in third place. As the lead duo neared the bottom of the steep downhill, Parker set up a pass attempt on Clark as they braked hard for the tight left handed turn at the bottom of the hill. As Clark railed the berm, Parker held off braking until the last moment and cut inside his dad for the lead. Clark kept his son honest with several challenges to his lead, although late in the moto Parker extended his lead and held it to the finish to clinch both the moto and overall wins with Clark second overall and Dimond in third.

50+ GP Intermediate racing witnessed two strong rides from Suzuki mounted Tim Hoole. Mounted on the smallest displacement bike in the class, the RM-125 mounted Hoole blitzed his way to the overall win over both 250cc and 500cc machines. In the first moto Hoole came from behind to take over the lead early in the moto to take the win over Ron Witt (Hon) and Ron Rinden (Hon). Hoole would use the same tactics in the second moto and once again kept the throttle pinned on his diminutive machine and powered his way to both the moto and overall win, with Rinden and Scott Mays (Hon) rounding out the podium. Other winners on the day included Clark Jones taking the overall in +50 Vintage Expert, with Can-Am mounted Steve Ellis in second. Brent Wilkinson (Suz) topped the +50 Intermediates with Tim Vasquez (CZ) topping the Novice division. In +60 Vintage Tim Hoole, first GP 2 125 Intermediate and first 50+ GP Intermediate

Parker Jones, first Vintage Sportsman 250 Expert

Loren Dimond, first GP 3 250 Expert

Intermediate, it was Craig Walker (CZ) taking the overall over Dana Yenawine (CZ). Entries have exceeded 100 plus in the first three rounds with hopes high that this positive trend will continue. Visit www.ss-offroadmagazine.com for complete results. E
