In Memory Chuck Ramsey November 14, 1941 May 4, 2013 Last Desert Season 2012 The Dodge Power Wagon that got Chuck’s family of six out to the desert One of Chuck’s home built desert vehicles from the 1970’s Chuck Ramsey was more than my father-in-law, he was my friend for more than twenty-five years. I think Chuck loved the desert as much as he loved life itself. Chuck was always surrounded by people, both family and friends. He had a wonderful sense of humor, not a mean bone in his body and could fix just about anything with a few tools, zip ties and duct tape. Because of Chuck, there are three generations that have been introduced to and fell in love with the desert and everything it has to offer. Chuck and all the memories we created with him will live on forever in our hearts. — Michelle Ramsey, Poway CA

During this Back to the Desert special issue we decided to revisit this column that ran shortly after we made the move to Ocotillo Wells a few years ago.

T

he guy-in-the-garage has had a dream for a long time. To live in the desert.

When we moved out of the city to the small mountain community of Julian in 1999 we suspected it was a stopping point as we moved closer to the ultimate goal. We just didn’t expect that we’d be arriving at the goal as quickly as we did nor at the time of year that we did. So there we were packing up and moving to the desert right in the middle of summer. Moving can be a dangerous thing. Especially for guys who live in the garage and have purchased things over the years their wives either did not know about or possibly knew a portion of the truth, but not the whole truth. We spent several weeks preparing for the big move, and the guy-in-thegarage was gradually filling up two enclosed trailers. Only one of them was ours. The second one used to be ours, but had recently been sold to a friend down the street. We told him there was no hurry to move it from our property to his. Within just a couple of days of selling it, the guy-in-the-garage began loading it with precious metals. You know, like engines, exhaust pipes, tools, nuts, bolts, motorcycle frames and I believe a number of complete motorcycles. I said to him one day as I watched him carry another load to the recently-

sold trailer, “Did you ask Rich if you can use the trailer to move?” He probably answered but I didn’t hear him as he moved deeper into the bowels of this trailer where he was transferring items from the garage. A few mornings later I got my answer when the phone rang early. It was Rich. “Tell Steve I’m going to pick up the trailer this morning,” he said. I hesitated just about a split second and then said, “I think you need to talk to Steve.” At the same time he was filling up the old trailer, I saw that the new trailer was also filled with motorcycles. It made sense that the first thing he would load would be all of his motorcycles. That’s what he did whenever we evacuated for a fire (which had become a habit in the last few years) and that’s what he was doing now. What I didn’t understand was the cell phone call I received from the guy-in-thegarage a few weeks later. A home inspector working for one of the real estate agents had mistakenly left our garage door wide open while we were gone. He got home before I did and now the guy-in-the-garage was clearly explaining to me in a voice that didn’t even require the use of a telephone about how all of the motorcycles in the garage could have been stolen. What I couldn’t figure out is, what motorcycles was he talking about? The trailers were already loaded. They were filled with motorcycles. The first thing I did when I got home was go to the garage. I saw that it was filled to capacity with motorcycles. It looked as if not one motorcycle had been moved. And what I wondered at that exact moment was: “Where did all these motorcycles come from?” But knowing how he gets when someone tampers with his garage I just figured I’d save my question for later. I’m not sure I ever did ask that exact question. But I do remember when we were unloading a truck load of exhaust pipes at the new property I’m sure I asked him why he needed so many exhaust pipes. And it occurs to me now that I don’t ever recall hearing an answer. A few days later when his brother and a close friend showed up to move the

garage equipment, I watched as they carried motorcycle engine after motorcycle engine out and loaded them into the bed of a truck. Jack and Ted were laughing about all the engines and I muttered something that could have sounded like griping about all the exhaust pipes. Jack gave me a look and said “You have to have an exhaust pipe for each engine, you know!” So that would also explain all the frames hanging from the ceiling? I guess we’re going to match them up with the exhaust pipes and engines. I must be slow to catch on. Because as I watched all this it occurred to me that when we first moved to Julian, all of his tools and motorcycle items were contained in just the garage. Then he took over the room I used for an office that was just off the garage. It became his “engine room.” Then he built a shed out back, and later he bought what I dubbed the “circus trailer” a 1920’s-era semi-truck trailer. I guess it never occurred to me that he was filling these things to the brim with his objects of affection, anything and everything related to motorcycles. I said earlier that moving can be dangerous, but the ultimate danger was still ahead. It came as we were moving my possessions. Things connected to my office. The guy-in-the-garage looked at me in the midst of it and said “We really need to get rid of some of this junk, don’t you think?” The really funny thing is, he was totally serious. I quickly pondered a variety of responses to that question and then finally went with the one he uses the most when I’m questioning him about things. I just looked away and pretended I didn’t even hear what he said. E

ello Off Roaders! Lately some doctors of chiropractic, (D.C.’s), have been working in hospitals that are smart enough to use good chiro-docs in their Orthopedic and Rehab wings. It seems the communication may be improving between the medical doctors that are trained mainly to use drugs and/or surgery and the chiropractors. I have had several referrals lately from Scripps Clinic, to treat some of their folks who were not making progress with basic phyical therapy and/or drugs and injections. Also, more referrals from Scripp’s Green and Sharps, even the VA hospital! This is great to see as it is good for the patients to have a well rounded approach to their health issues. Not being almost forced into surgery and drugs is a good thing. Other choices are out there but many a time the general public is led astray or not

even told or even suggested that they may want to try chiropractic or acupuncture. Many more are nearly forced into drugs or surgery as their insurance does not cover chiropractic treatment. Example; under Obamacare in California, Chiropractic is not covered as Govenor Jerry Brown has decided it is not a “necessary medical expense”. That is a bit odd. If the Govenor really did his homework he would see that California has the largest use of

chiropractic in the nation, the world and has the most D.C’s of any state or country in the world. But Brown figured it was not necessary. Now these folks with back pain will be forced to go to MD’s for all back pain issues. More drugs and surgery, most of the time. And, it’s reported that “flexiontraction” seems to work best. I always wondered why I got such great results with my flexion-traction tables over the years. See, instead of just straight traction

8 S&S OFF ROAD MAGAZINE - OCTOBER 2013 - www.SS-OffRoadMagazine.com

or “decompression” as some like to call it, flexion-traction is different in that it bends you at the waist as it stretches out, tractions, the lower back. Lots of hype out there in the market place of lower back pain over so called “decompression”, as it is really just good traction if applied correctly. I’ve been seeing alot of folks with disc issues in the neck and the low back. Some of these folks have pain that radiates through their shoulders and down to their arms, even hands and fingers or pain down their legs (Sciatica) to their feet, toes. Back to DC’s in hospitals now. Some new studies are finding that chiropractic care and flexiontraction methods that many DC’s use at their offices are actually causing degenerative tissues in the discs (the shock absorbing bearings between bony vertebra), to actually form new tissue and REGENERATE healthy tissue. They are seeing new blood vessels and cells form that regenerate the tissue that makes up the disc once it has some traction and/or chiropractic adjustments to take the offending compression off the disc in the first place. To me, this is not really that amazing, after all, if you remove the offending cause of the problem, living tissue will generally repair itself given the chance to heal. Check out the picture provided to see what a lower lumbar disc degeneration looks like. Those “jelly donut” like discs get unequal pressue on them from a misaligned vertebra sitting on top of it and all the weight of the upper body pressing down. This can and does cause the disc to bulge to one one side. The discs do not “slip”, they bulge and or leak out to one side. This in turn puts pressure on the nerves and the nerves of the disc itself can radiate pain to other areas of the body, like down the leg in the case of Sciatica. References for the studies that indicate disc tissue regeneration following chiropractic and flexion traction treatments can be found on page 40 of the American Chiropractic Association news, September, 2013. The chiropractic doctors who obtained hospital staff status and reviewed the studies are James Cox, D.C., inventor of the Cox Flexion Traction Table and Don Apergren, D.C. Hospitals in general could do very well for those in back and neck pain if they used chiropractors in their orthopedic and physical medicine wings. Not every condition needs drugs or surgery. Regeneration of disc tissues and other positive changes can best occur with early treatment of flexion-traction and chiropractic rather than as a last resort. And yes, age and how long the condition has been there are also indicating factors. Dr. Gary DeForest is a San Diego based chiropractor and has been in Old Town for 30 years. He is always happy to speak with you about any health concerns. Dr. DeForest can be reached at deforest192@yahoo.com or at his office 619-291-2462. Cell, 619-300-7717. E

All, or nearly all, new drivers go through this stage. Heck, I did. It was many years ago, and it took many years of driving to really understand how best to deck out a new vehicle to fit my needs. In fact, even today, I continue to make minor modifications over the course of a vehicle’s lifetime. As with any hobby, money is an issue. And, yes, you can spend a boatload on your vehicle (both buying and modifying). Keep in mind that it is possible to enjoy this fascinating hobby with a modest budget. UTVUnderground Presents: RJ Anderson XP1K Video

T

he motorsports production powerhouse Mad Media, and UTVUnderground.com launched a remarkable new viral video today called “XP1K”. Directed by The Martelli Brothers, (best known for directing the first three Gymkhana films), XP1K features offroad champion and factory Polaris Pro UTV racer RJ Anderson behind the wheel of a custom built, 190 horsepower, 2014 Polaris RZR XP1000 UTV. The video is a non-stop blitz of off-road action, jaw dropping close calls, and precision driving – and features a climactic world record-breaking ending! The XP1K project was announced in conjunction with the release of the 2014 Polaris RZR XP1000 off-road vehicle by Polaris Industries at their annual dealer show. The official XP1K trailer was released on XP1K.com shortly after, followed by a teaser clip that was hosted by project partner Falken Tire. Both clips highlight

the unique nature of the project, and feature arresting images of both the XP1K vehicle and the unforgiving, destructive backdrop that served as the location for filming. “XP1K is gnarly. We picked an abandoned iron mine in the middle of the desert and turned it into a sketchy postapocalyptic off-road skate park. There were no road cones out there! It was all real concrete and consequences. We built the fastest, most powerful UTV on the planet. RJ got in it, and stomped everything we could come up with. Nothing in

this video is fake – it’s 100% adrenaline. I don’t think people will ever look at a UTV the same way,” said XP1K co-director and Mad Media CEO Matt Martelli.

The XP1K vehicles were built by a team of off-road racing experts. Mark Holz of Holz Racing Products received two stock 2014 RZR XP1000’s from UTVUnderground.com and rebuilt them from the ground up. Randy Anderson of Walker Evans engineered and installed a custom Walker Evans suspension set-up, normally reserved for off-road race trucks. Additionally, Kevin Kroyer at Kroyer Racing Engines teamed up with MCX Turbos and produced the most powerful UTV engines ever built, specifically for the XP1K vehicles. The cars sit on custom grooved Falken Wildpeak A/T Tires and feature safety equipment from Mastercraft and Impact. They are wrapped with a custom Mad Media designed graphics package that is used throughout the campaign. Complete vehicle specs can be found at xp1k.com “We pulled out all the stops on XP1K – to make it as fun and authentic to watch as possible,” commented XP1K co-director and Mad Media COO Joshua Martelli. Energy CEO: Prominent Americans Discussing Impeaching Obama

This column is reprinted with permission from EPA Abuse.com

Posted September 12, 2013 by Ed Farnan

T

he direct speaking Robert Murray pulled no punches when he addressed the Bluefield Coal show in West Virginia September 11, 2013. The CEO of Murray Energy, one of America’s largest coal producers, had a lot to say; and the word “impeachment” was one of them during a hard-hitting keynote speech to the coal mining industry, as well as to the rest of America. Murray warned that Obama‘s disastrous energy policies are leading America to a European model of energy poverty as evidenced by huge price spikes to consumers in Britain and Germany… “They are destroying low cost electricity in America for everyone, including our citizens on fixed incomes and our manufacturers of products that compete in the global marketplace. European countries, particularly Germany went this route with disastrous consequences.” He backed up Germany’s energy plight with: “Germany spent 194 billion in the past 10 years on their “green” Obama experiment,

including 10.2 billion in subsidies for solar alone. The result is German electric prices have jumped 61% and 15% of German families live in energy poverty.” . . . All of their predictions on the cost of solar and wind power were understated five-fold” “To make up for German’s energy shortfall created by the loss of nuclear power and the inefficiency of ‘green’ electricity, Germany is currently building 23 new coalfired electricity generating plants.” Great Britain is another canary in the “green” mineshaft as their citizens struggle with huge price increases in electricity: “Their electricity prices have risen more than 70% since 2005. Further, electricity prices are expected to increase another 54% by 2020.” . . . and other European countries are now faced with power black outs. Mr. Obama, his supporters and most democrats in Congress will not recognize this.” Murray pointed the spotlight on the actual damage these Obama “green” policies will wreak on America: “Mr. Obama’s

EPA alone will destroy much of America’s economy, resulting in the loss of 2.15 million jobs and nearly 200 billion in electricity rate increases by 2020, according to recent expert studies.” If there is a keystone to modern society, it is the availability of relatively cheap and abundant energy. And Murray spelled it out: “Low cost electricity is a staple of life.

16 S&S OFF ROAD MAGAZINE - OCTOBER 2013 - www.SS-OffRoadMagazine.com

President Obama and his radical appointees are generating a huge crisis for America in what they are doing to the cost and reliability of electric power for our citizens.” Murray put a personal tie into why he is so passionate about Obama’s disastrous energy policies: “Mr. Obama’s actions are a human issue to me, as I know the names of many Americans whose jobs and family livelihoods are being destroyed as he appeases his radical environmentalist, unionist, liberal elitist Hollywood character and other constituents. These folks are my employees. “These good Americans only want to work in honor and dignity. But when their jobs and those of their neighbors are eliminated in the coal mining areas of America, they have no one to sell their homes to, which is generally their only possession. Thus these people, who only want to work, are prohibited from doing so and fall to the negative side of the economic ledger for the rest of their lives. This is not the America that I have always cherished.” Robert Murray ominously closed out his speech with a warning to the President and those who insist on taking America down a path that will eventually lead to disaster for the country: “Many prominent Americans are now discussing the need to impeach President Obama…maybe you will want to be a part of this effort.” This article originally appeared at IrishCentral.com and is reprinted on EPA Abuse.com with permission. 31 Years Welcoming You

Back to the Desert

BY CRAIG RENS

My First Desert Race E

ver since I was a little kid I had been reading about desert racing, about how long the races were and how hard they were. I read everything I could find on them, I mean everything and I read it over and over and over. The things I read about were, bike setup, pit stops, riding techniques, what to eat, what to drink, everything. I also read about one other fact that stuck in my mind, but I will get to that later in the story Finally, when I turned 16 my Dad took my brother and me to a desert race.

The race was 120 miles, three 40-mile loops. This was way back when bikes had four inches of travel in the rear and seven in the front. I had a 1972 Yamaha DT2 Enduro, it had been radically ported, it had a larger carburetor and a pipe and for that time it was extremely fast, it could easily beat a 360, but it was only fast until you hit a big bump or bush. Then you went over the handlebars. Anyway, we arrived Saturday evening and went to sleep. Sunday morning we got up and went to the rider’s meeting. There were a lot of people there and I started to get a little bit scared. There were at least 200 riders and this was my first race ever. However, by the

time the rider’s meeting was over I was going to be more than scared I was going to be terrified. It started out okay. This guy got up in the back of a truck and started talking about course markings, danger markings, etc and then at the end of the meeting, he stated, “This sport is dangerous. You can get hurt and even killed.” I kind of knew this, but somebody saying it is a bit di!fferent than “kind of knowing it” and then the next few words terrified me. Right after the danger

thing, he says these immortal words “who wants to volunteer to bring the heads back into town?” Now a few years later and I won’t say how many I realized he was talking about the porta-potties, but right then, I did not. The guy just finished saying you can get killed doing this and then he says “Who is going bring back the ‘heads’ back into town?” I jumped to a conclusion, I thought, holy crap, this sport is a lot more than just dangerous, they don’t even bring back whole bodies, just the heads. I guess I thought if you crashed going real fast all that was left of you was your head or maybe they couldn’t bring back a whole body on a motorcycle, so they just put the heads in a sack and rode back with them. I realize it’s hard to believe I thought this, but I’m from Iowa and this was my first race, what can I say. The guy also mentioned something about how the start was going to be, but by that time I had quit listening and missed this part, but as you will see this actually helped me a bit. Okay, back to the race. I was late getting to the start and as I rode up behind the start line, I noticed everyone was standing in front of their bike straddling the front wheel, this was the part I had missed at the end of the rider’s meeting. It was a straddle the front wheel dead engine start. I looked to the left and noticed they had the flag up in the air, meaning they were about to drop it and start the race. So, here is the situation: All the other riders were standing in front of their bikes straddling their front wheels with their engines not running and there I was on a bike with the engine running, wheels rolling and going about 20 mph when all of sudden they dropped the flag. I hesitated a second, but I was no fool, so I gassed it and took off. If anybody noticed that I had unintentionally cheated at the start, I never knew, because I was flat gone! There I was, a boy from Iowa in my first desert race and I was in first place. I accelerated and continued to upshift and real quick I was topped out in fifth gear. Then I hit a bush and over the bars I went. I jumped up and ran back to the bike, picked it up and took off, I wasn’t in first anymore, but close. I got back up to speed and again I was topped out in fifth and then I hit another bush and this time I

really flew. I crawled back to my bike and hid behind it. Every now and then I would peek over the top of the seat, but I would duck every time I saw someone coming. When it was safe, I picked up the bike and took off. I was not last, but I was way back in the pack. Now even though I was way back, I was not worried. I knew I could still win this race. That’s right: Win! Because of that one other fact that was stuck in my head. I had read that in a lot of these desert races the winner would average 30 mph.

When I read this I thought, “no problem, my bike could easily do 80 mph and in the desert it’s easy to do 30 mph.” So I put my strategy to work. No matter what the terrain was like, I did my best to maintain 30 mph, no slower and also no faster because the stories I had read said “average 30 mph and you will win.” I would be in these big sand washes just putting along and these guys would be passing me like I was standing still. I thought to myself, how foolish, because with my strategy I would pass them back quite soon. I finished the first loop and I was kind of getting worried. My strategy didn’t seem to be working, but heck I still had 80 miles to go. I was getting really worried by the time I had finished the second loop. I came into the pits for gas and my Dad told me some crushing news. He said that I should just quit because the leaders had finished the race already. I asked “How is this possible?” He didn’t answer the question and he

continued on saying that not only had the winners finished, they had picked up their trophies, packed up and left for home. Right then I realized something that I had started to think about when these guys would pass me in the sand washes like I was standing still. To average 30 mph or whatever speed, you had to go like crazy in the smooth sections to make up for the rough sections. I didn’t quit and I took off and rode the last 40 mile loop, I rode as fast as I could and passed a few guys back. Obviously I didn’t finish very well. When the race was over, I told my dad and brother that we needed to pack up and leave real quick, but I didn’t tell them why. But the fact was that I didn’t want to see anybody bring back a head from somebody that had crashed during the race. Though I really wasn’t that worried since nobody had volunteered at the rider’s meeting to bring them back and I knew why. Who in the world would want to pick up people’s heads and haul them back into town?

31 Years Welcoming You

Back to the Desert

A first trip to remember. I’d heard of Glamis from those in the Sunset truck club with the 4X4 trucks but had never been. Purchased a dune buggy and got it to run. My friend Brian asked what we were doing on Thanksgiving. We had dinner plans but the rest of the 4 day weekend was free. He said, “I’m going to Glamis with some friends, want to go?” We said, “Sure and we have a buggy now too.” He said “Great so do I and my friends, lets meet after dinner.” Followed my friend as I didn’t know where Glamis was, how far or what roads. Old highway 111 was very dark and lots of big dips. We came to Brawley, got some gas and on to the dunes. Looking ahead I remember seeing what I thought was a four-lane highway we were approaching, so many headlights and tail lights. Where the heck are we? I wondered. Then discovered it was Sand Highway. I looked down on Comp Hill as we drove by, saw an amazing amount of people there, fires, fireworks and so many toys. We made it to the washes to find other friends to camp with. Brian unloaded his buggy to search for more friends and I jumped in. Found his friends really fast, they went to get trucks and join us. Then Brian “popped the clutch” and I was now looking at the moon . . . we were on two wheels! Our buggy ran like crap that trip but those new friends made the trip great. That was 26 years ago and I’m still hooked. — Jim Colln, Bellflower CA

Desert Riders Reunion

On May 29, 2013, there was a big reunion for some of the top enduro riders from the 1960’s & 1970’s. About 26 riders attended. Most of those attending rode bikes with 4” of travel if they were lucky. This was held at Tom Spurlock’s home in Yorba Linda. He had it catered with some super tacos and burritos! We had so much talent, determinism, and skill at this gathering. Tom said that six months ago, he couldn’t have imagined this all coming together the way it did. The attendees came from many states. Some flew in from Hawaii

and Oklahoma. Others drove from Arizona, Utah, and several California cities. We had a great time catching up with buddies from the past - a memory Tom said he would have for a long time. Some hadn’t seen each other for 35 years! Tom wanted to thank everyone for attending and was happy having everyone at his home. Tom said he would tell his boys about the racing days from time to time, and now they can put some faces with the names. There were a lot of picture contributions

so we had a great photo evening. There were some pictures that everyone was trying to identify who they were - with some measure of success. Tom said he had a hard time getting to sleep afterwards, trying to get his mind to stop thinking about all the conversations and new things he learned. It was so incredible, after all these years. One of the “younger” riders Dave Graham made a special effort to attend after getting out of the hospital from a motorcycle injury. He

was raised as a Trials rider (late 60’s thru mid 70’s) and rode in the same club as Dave Evans. When he saw that Dave Evans was going to be there he really wanted to make it. Dave G said it had been about 35 years since he last seen any of the Dave Evans family and it was so much fun to talk with Dave. Dave G can’t wait to share some stories with his father (Roger Graham) who rode his Trials bike at several of the more difficult Enduro’s way back when. “If you ever remember Dave Evans bringing “Trials Guys” out to some Enduro’s, it was likely my father. He was one of the guys passing a hundred or more riders at a time at the bottlenecks as they plonked around the mayhem on their lightweight nimble bikes.” While we were at the reunion, Dave E dialed up Donna and Dave G got to speak with her. Dave G was so happy that he could re-unite with a good friend from his teens. The reunion flew by like a flash for everyone there. It was so much fun, they all want to do it again!! Those attending were: Dave Evans, Mike Adams, Mike Godfrey, Bob Lindgren, Dick Knapp, Jay and Doug Tullis, Larry Langley, Dan and John Knous, Roy Watson, Dave and Laura Matus, Scott McKenzie, Ron Alves, Ron Fry, Tim Elliott, Grant and Garner Palenske, Mike Sterling, Larry Curl, Dick Varner, Fred Hayes and of course Tom Spurlock. Others invited but not able to come were Debbie Evans Levitt, Donna Evans, Rick Munyon, Bob Nickelsen and Jerry Counts. — Carrie Watson, Victorville CA Photo by Jeff Spurlock.

second notch. Leachman needs to finish ahead of Kniffing and rolls on the throttle and goes into second overall in moto and first in class. Leachman marries up with Sandoval by the end of lap three with Kniffing keeping up the pace in third less than three seconds behind Leachman. Hernandez is off the pace and in a battle for fourth with Manuel Moreno. Sticking to his game Leachman digs the spurs into his machine over a triple past the doubling Sandoval on lap six. Kniffing in a desperate attempt to keep up, airs his own dramatic jump pass to get by Sandoval for second and immediately puts the attack on Leachman. Leachman closes the doors on Kniffing on the white flag and brings home the moto win, Knffing passes through the checkers in second. Reading the small labels on Leachman's jersey, this reporter has Sandoval third in moto and Hernandez fourth. Wrapping up the top three overall in the 85-150 (9-11) with Leachman (21) first, Kniffing (1-2) second, and Hernandez (3-3) third. The top three overall for the upper classman goes Sandoval (1-1) first, Brayden Lessler (2-2) and Zach Walker (3-3) third. Hernandez paid back the competitors shutting down the competition with a 1-1 for the Supermini overall win, Kniffing (22), and Brayden Lessler (4-3) third. 250 Novice start with #72 Kyle Freund, #362 and overall winner Trevor Hooten, and #397 Logan Garvey. n a hot Labor Day Sunday, Pala Raceway raced the fourth round of their six round series, The Motocross Majors. Commencing in April with the Spring Fling round, we are now into the Pala Amateur Championship round. The next two and final rings in the series will be the Oktoberfast on October twelfth and thirteenth, closing out with the Christmas Cup on December fifteenth. End of the summer time in Southern California produced a very warm day, but most everyone seems to be educated on watering up on these dry heat spells, let's race. Fly Racing's Brandon Hernandez emerged as the leader on lap two of the 85-150 (9-11) and 85-150 (12-13) inter-class moto one, North County Yamaha/ bLU cRU's Gavin Leachman in second with an impatient Kaeden Kniffing on his case, and Kniffing goes by for second. Heranandez stretching out the gap as we wheel into lap four of the fifteen minute moto makeup, Kniffing keeps the push on seven seconds behind, Leachman maintaining contact in third. Late in the race Hernandez has suddenly slipped back to third and Kniffing jumps into the point with Leachman moving into second. The racers fly through the checkers positioned in between the grandstand jumps as Pro Taper's Knffing wins, Leachman second, and Hernandez third. Mike Sandoval racing in the 85-150 (12-13) assaults the pack and rifles into the moto two lead on lap one, with Kniffing running close but starts to fall off the pace slightly and Sandoval opens up a two

Out of the gate with #381 Nathan Cernicky and #59 Tallon La Fountaine Southland Racing/BTO Motorsports/Alias/ Rocket Exhaust trackman Tallon LaFountaine seemed to take out his frustrations on his fellow competitors, having a rip-roaring day that had just one flub, getting to the line late in his first moto of the 250 Intermediate. He fixed it quickly flying through the pack and placed himself second in class, then made the line on time for a moto two win and the overall. Running faster or at the same pace of the Pro's all day, LaFountaine went on to put the hurt to his classmates with a 1-1 in the Schoolboy for the overall victory, and sticking another 1-1 for the Open Intermediate win as well. A very successful day for LaFountaine, finishing up with his own brand of a mototrifecta. Giving much respect to his speedy brothers of the past, Josh LaFountaine who rocked his share of wins a few years ago, and late brother, Jeagher LaFountaine. Jeagher died tragically at the age of eighteen in May of 2010, and was in the midst of an upsurge towards moto excellence at the time. Front and center here comes Tallon with

his after-burners lit, the teenager is coming on strong in the moto world. Having an excellent showing at a 2013 California Gold Cup held at Glen Helen against a very strong field, this human jet pack is ready to be the next big thing from Southern California. Receiving his first motocrosser for Christmas in 2011, he has been a quick learner skipping the Beginner ranks he went straight to Novice. Racing in the 250 C (Novice) Modified at the 2012 AMA Amateur Nationals, he finished first in moto one and ended up with a ninth overall, also placing sixth in the 450 C. On to the speedy world of the Intermediate (B class), qualifying for the 2013 AMA Amateur Nationals he finished a worthy twelfth place overall in the 450 B Limited despite the muddy conditions. Appreciating the individual attributes of motocross where personal commitment and sacrifice determines the outcome, the well spoken teenager will be in the Intermediate class for 2014, racing at most Amateur Nationals. He would like to thank Mom and Dad, Randy Lawrence, Casey Johnson, and all his backers. The next Southern California standout, this reporter thinks. he weather was perfect for racing at the Prairie City OHV Park on a Saturday night in late August. Not too hot during the day and by the end of the heats the sweatshirts started coming out. The tracks, both a perfectly groomed short track and a TT track provided an excellent racing surface for riders ranging from young Lane Redding, just 5 years old, showing a tenacious spirit and whole lot of natural talent, to those over 40 in the 40+ senior class. In spite of a less than abundant rider count the competition on the track was close and very exciting. With a whole array of rewards for the winners that included some wonderful gifts from TLD and Oakley, as well as gift certificates from several local retailers and trophies for those that wanted them. The Vet mini class started the short track main events with riders from Napa, Rodeo, San Rafael, San Francisco and Sacramento. After a third place finish in the heat race Chris Smith got the hole shot and rode the main out front from pole to pole ahead of Kevin Holman who had finished the heat race in front. Michael Mannion rounded out the podium with his third place finish main event finish. Mannion was back on the track to finish first in both the heat and main of the 150 production class. Brett Voorhees, Rylee Gallagher, Wyatt Maes, and Bobby Stellfox III rode both the heat and main in that order. Voorhees and Maes then finished one-two in the youth 150/85 class and Voorhees finished second behind Mannion in the 150 Production event. Holman, Smith and Mannion were competing again in the nine rider 230 class. After riding the tractor and the water hose, Brok McAllister joined this competition too. At the end of ten laps, Holman was first to cross the finish line followed by Smith and Mannion. McAllister finished fourth followed by Steve Coscarelli. Coscarelli and Wyatt Marshall traded positions three times during the ten lap duel. Competition was fierce in the Open DTX class. Gage McAlister who is currently also competing in AMA Road Racing aboard a Folsom HarleMity Davidson sponsored Harley Davidson XR1200 finished eighth in the Indianapolis GP August 16th. Tonight he took the lead off the start line staying in front of heat race winner Mitch Gallagher to finish first. Gallagher finished behind McAllister (and Brok McAllister, Gage’s dad, was also in the money finishing third. Michael Mannion and three others followed. A short break took place while the track was magically transformed into a stellar TT configuration. Excitement resumed with the 65/125 youth class that also included Lane Redding although Redding was riding his own Pee Wee class finishing first. During the first lap young rider Bobby Stellfox III who finished second in the heat race crashed bringing out the red flag and a visit to the paramedics. We wish him well. On the restart Voorhees took the lead again to show Maes and Gallagher the fast way around the track. Bill Giltner showed Chris Smith and Anthony Farris the way to the Sr. 40+ checkers. This night the 230 class had the biggest rider count on the start line. Holman rode like a pro to stay

in front of Gage McAllister in the 230 class after capturing the lead in the first lap. Marshall rode in the third place through lap three when Brok McAllister was able to secure the third spot after getting around some carnage that left Marshall in the ninth position. Smith held the fourth place all eight laps to finish in front of Gallagher and was back on the track. Smith completed the super moto class in the front of the pack and Voorhees continued his trophy march earning top honors in Jeff Corcoran sliding out of turn 4 the three TT classes against his competitors. The Open DTX event was exciting to watch as Gage McAllister left the start in front at the green light. Dad, Brok, was on him through all ten laps working the track, looking for the opportunity to take the front spot. Behind them Marshall was pushing through the turns to maintain his third position while hoping for a chance to move closer to the lead. Joey Hrenko held tight piloting his machine in laps two through ten in fourth. McAllisters, Gage and Brok finished first and second with Marshall rounding out the podium. Holman also earned another first place in the Vet mini class and Gage McAllister finished out the night winning the Open DTX class. S&S Off Road sends their thoughts to the family and will keep them in prayer. Senior Vet 50+ Expert Jim Ottele came off the line and broke into lap one with the lead, John Perez slid into second and Larry Earhart third. Ottele put all his experience to work, holding Perez's force at bay. Perez closed in a few times but just could not get by the power of Ottele who wins, Perez for second. The inter-class line had Senior Vet 50+ Amateur racer Corey Bauman threatening third place Earhart. Bauman came into the last lap going inside of Earhart, but Earhart appeared to cross in front of Bauman blocking him for the third, Bauman fourth in race and first in class. K&N Filters Jeremy Templeman isn’t unfamiliar to racing, but most of his past experience involved competitions like the annual Grand Prix's of Lake Elsinore and Soboba. Taking a flat track racing course this year and with the wiseof-ways tips from Jim Rosa, he is quickly becoming a force. His best placing was third at round four so he was on a quest for his first win in his debut season of Flat Track. The larger picture is the series points chase with Nick Gil at a five point margin over Nick Armstrong and Dylan Morin in third, one point in rear of Armstrong. Not on the line, Gil is currently going to school and Morin was disqualified from the Main according to the results, so the door is wide open for Armstrong to win the #12E Paul Ott rode to a fourth in the Pro, #45E Ian Foulds championship. stuck a second in the Pro. On lap four Kocinski still at the point but unable to shake Foulds, third place Armstrong just back of Foulds, and Paul Ott fourth. The midway mark sees Kocinski gapping a two second window over Foulds with Armstrong still in back of Foulds, Paul Ott is fading back slightly in fourth. Vintage Motocross Round 2 - August 25, 2013 Cahuilla Creek MX Anza, CA By Steve Caro Photos by Kathryn Caro

V

intage and post-vintage motocross racing returned to Cahuilla Creek MX for round two of the 2013 CALVMX/AHRMA/100% racing series. Popular with the vintage racing community, the expertly modified vet track stood ready for the classic racing machines filling the pit area. Former Honda and Kawasaki factory sponsored racer Tommy “Tomahawk” Croft was the day’s honored guest as a legend of motocross. An image from his factory racing days was featured on the commemorative cups presented to the days’ class winners. A variety of machines occupied the pit area during the day. Bikes ranging in size from the small 100cc machines of the Marty Tripes 100cc Revenge Classes to the formidable 500cc two-strokes were readied for action prior to the riders meeting and practice periods. Included on the day were the three wheeler racers. Begun as a club experiment to test the viability of offering a class for the long out of production vehicles, the division has grown increasingly popular, with a notable increase in the number of machines of all different displacements broad sliding around the course. In the two-wheeled segment of racing, action began at a fast pace with the 100cc machines taking to the course first. Scott Burnworth (Yam) dominated the Factory Flyweight Pro class with a strong first moto win, with Parker Jones (Suz) returning to action after recovering from a non-racing related accident. Jeff Kelly (Yam) topped the Factory Flyweight Intermediate class followed by Bob Seki (Yam). Kawasaki mounted Kevin Temple once again topped the Vintage Sportsman 250 Intermediate division, followed by the Yamaha of Brent Wilkinson and the Maico of Norm Himaka, while in the novice division it was Jim Barker on a very original looking Honda Elsinore. Racing for machines one era newer than the pre75 machines featured Brian Tracy (Yam) dominating the GP-1-250 Expert division in moto one followed by Jeff Kelly (Suz) and Brian Curtis (Mai). While Tracy topped the field in the quarter liter class, Noah Perry decimated the GP-1 500 Experts in the first moto on his brutally fast 440 Maico, with Rick Daniel (Yam) and Dave Fisher (Suz) rounding out the top three. Clark Jones was once again the dominant force in 50 Plus Vintage Expert. The main man at Noleen Racing returned to his roots and powered his CZ to a convincing first moto win ahead of Kirk Chapman (CZ) and Ed Zornes (Yam). While Jones was conquering the experts, Rick Guilmette (CZ) displayed excellent speed and added to his win total with a victory in the 50

Plus Intermediates over Kevin Temple (Kaw) and Brent Wilkinson (Yam). Not to be outdone by the two wheelers, the three wheeled classes displayed a totally different style of racing in their moto. As anyone familiar with these machines knows, putting a foot down in a corner is something to be avoided at all costs. The fastest method in cornering is a hard power slide with plenty of body lean to maneuver around the corner. Doing it best in the first moto was Jerad Knisely in the 3-Wheeled Open

Stock Intermediate class, Tom Decresente in Stock 250 Expert and David Ham in 250 Stock Intermediate with all three taking first in their respective classes. Also taking moto victories on the day were InterAm veteran Bill Silverthorn in the 60 Plus Vintage Experts, Rick Daniel in GP-3 500 Expert and Doug Reyes in the Open Age GP Expert class. Unfortunately the day was marred by a torrential rain storm that struck the area just as the second round of motos were to start. What had begun as a few

Jerad Knisely sporadic rain drops quickly evolved into a deluge that quickly turned the track into a quagmire and the pit areas into something resembling a high desert version of a bayou! With time rapidly running out, club officials elected to cancel the second set of motos and award all entrants 10 points to their season total. 4th Annual Marty Tripes

Vintage Days September 7, 2013, The Ranch, Anza CA ARTICLE & PHOTOS BY RODNEY RUTHERFORD

Gary Jones, Justin Jones, Mrs. Jones, Don White , Dewayne Jones, and Parker Jones. ain clouds, overcast, and sporadic showers greeted the 4th Annual Marty Tripes Vintage Days race. One of the highlights of the event has been a celebration of the motocross greats. This year was the time for the prolific Jones racing family. The patriarch Don Jones, passed away in late July of 2008, Mr. Jones was a flat track and road racer, an inventor, a mechanic, a racing coach, and a dad that fathered one of the greatest racers of all time, four-time National 250cc Champion Gary Jones. Mr. Jones became a BSA and Matchless dealer in the late 1950's, and in the 1960's he was reportedly the first Yamaha dealer in the USA. Then there was the Yamaha DT-1 that the Jones family modified with titanium bolts and screws, flattening and extending the swing arm, lowering the engine, an assortment of modifications were implemented, causing them to say they had done everything to the bike from A to Z. Giving the bike

back to Yamaha with all their modifications intact it laid the groundwork for the 1974 Yamaha YZ. The family matriarch, Melinda Jones, is also credited with the popular red, white and blue Honda jersey. This family is moto. Gary, the oldest of the children and still very active racing and within the motorcycle industry, Dewayne is a year younger than Gary and can still deliver the speed on the flat track, next is Melinda and Gary's bookend and the youngest, sister Lois. I have interviewed Gary multiple times, and Gary's son Justin many times as well. Having seen Gary’s sister Lois with her husband Clark Jones for a few years now at local races, I thought she had another story to tell. Her dad had originally introduced her to Clark Jones and later when they married, no last name change was required. A former AMA Pro motocrosser, Clark has set his mark in the moto world running the former Noleen Sizzler Supercross team

and the current owner of Noleen Suspension Technologies. Talking about the early days Lois recalls motorcycle parts being everywhere, in the house, kitchen, and in the garage of course. She laughed when reminiscing about cleaning oil filters, hundreds of times. Touring with Gary, she was with him during the Yamaha and Honda Championship runs. After Gary broke his leg at the 1975 Daytona Supercross, Lois remained his trusty confidante. Signed on to Can-AM at the time, when they bought his contract out after the leg injury, Gary and Lois invested the money. Gary along with his dad bought the Mexican Moto-Islo factory in Mexico, from Frank Cooper. After figuring out a way to manufacture a primo bike, a situation out of their control occurred when the Mexican peso was devalued and the factory was closed down. On the road with Gary after the factory closed down around the mid 1970's, Lois was still there for him as the dependable sister who could tell the difference between a torque wrench and socket wrench, and cleaning oil filters of course. The top twenty was the breaking point for the Pro payout in those days, Lois was instructed by Gary to put two dollar signs on the pit board if he was out of the bucks. Keeping track of his moto standing she would put the dollar signs on the chalk board if he fell out of the top twenty, Gary would light it up and hooray, gas money for the Clark and Lois Jones next race. While once eating a cheap meal at a McDonald’s they spied a happy family celebrating a birthday with all the hoopla and birthday cake. Their forlorn dreamy stares at the party struck a chord with the group and they were soon invited over to join the fiesta, and have some cake of course. Behind greatness is a strong woman, Lois is all of that and more! Speaking of Yamaha YZ's, CALVMX racer David MacDonald has an ongoing love affair with the machines. Spending many a late night especially before the races, primping and pandering his little

darlings, viewing preparation and maintenance of his moto collection just as vital as racing. His 2-Stroke stable consists of a 1978 Yamaha YZ 100 (Modern 2Strk 125 Exp.), a 1985 Yamaha YZ 125 (GP2 125 Exp. Modern 2-Stroke), and a 1990 Yamaha YZ250 (Single Shock 250 Exp.). A seasoned desert racer from years gone by he rode in the historic 1987 Parker 400, getting his moto on back in the day racing at tracks like Ascot, De Anza, and Saddleback. Dabbling with the modern 2-Stroke bikes he was injured in 2007 and took a sabbatical but can't keep the moto down. While selling a camper to a buddy he viewed a 1978 Yamaha YZ 125 on the side of the house that needed mucho TLC, the pony was soon at his house and the

racing bug was back. The next progressive step was Vintage racing, and a couple more neglected screamers found a happy home and a new life. MacDonald thanks Clark Jones, Troy lee Designs, Q&E Machine, and Lebard and Underwood. With Castrol oil in his blood and two stroke fumes for cologne, racers like MacDonald keep the two-stroke dream alive. The Jones family’s story is well documented, and its easy and funb to find many more stories of the legendary racers on the net.

by a mere 10 points over Angie Sripoona currently in second and charging. At the end of the event we listened to some of the racer’s comments and one thing was really obvious: They were shocked, surprised and relieved that they had completed the 350-miles or almost completed it. That was more than they had ever experienced. And that’s where this series comes in as far as its contribution to the sport: Experience. Most of the racers in the series had never covered such distances as the Pure Series offers. To date, with the running of the “200”, the “300” and now the “350”mile races, covering a total of 850 miles, has buoyed most of the competitors with the “Yes I can” attitude. With each race they are not only learning how to pace themselves and keep a steady speed for the long hours ahead, but it has given many of the participants new challenges in the preparation and set up of their SXS/ UTVs. You can hear drivers exchanging ideas at the finish line, and touting some of their successes as well as sharing some of their mistakes. According to Lou Peralta, promoter of the series and the man who has opened the doors for many of the racers, “This series had to start somewhere. The equipment and racers are too good not to take advantage of the ultimate trial of both man/woman and machine. This will be the proving grounds for many of the manufacturers to display and fine-tune their product as well as the after-market producers to see how their equipment works and lasts in these long-distance events.” Peralta also added, “We’re a bit disappointed so far of the turnout but not discouraged. It is a daunting task to tackle 2, 3, or 400 miles in open desert, where everything must work to near perfection in order to complete a race. But that’s how we all learn. We feel strongly about the series’ possibilities and encourage others to try it…they’ll like it.”

Second overall, at this event Logan Gastel led the overall points standings by a mere one point and is walking away with the Pro Production 1000cc Class.

Matt Lasher negotiating a tight canyon before the finish on his way to the Pro Production 850cc class win. The next event in the five-event Pure SXS Series is the September 27-29, 2013, DWT Pure “250” Presented by SXSPerformance.com. A new course is waiting for the racers who will need to complete six laps of about 41.5 miles. AVE prides itself in offering new courses with each event because they feel that changing courses helps the desert recuperate so that when they return one of two years later, it will be like a “new” course once again.
