“What was so important?” Do I need to say it wasn’t in one of his kindest voices? “You were giving the guy the wrong email address!” I said, and I may have sounded slightly annoyed. “I was trying to get your attention so you could give him the right one.” Did I mention how much technology annoys this guy? And though he badly wanted the motorcycle info the person on the other end of the phone could provide for him and was planning on emailing him, that did not override his desire at that moment to do away with the phone, the computer, and who knows, maybe even me! To say he is technologically challenged would be an understatement. I have heard him threaten to shoot his computer. I have heard him threaten to throw it out the sliding glass door just inches away from his desk. And I believe he was going to do that without actually opening the door. He complains if he gets two or three spam emails a day. I, who get hundreds every week, patiently come around my desk to his to help him try to eliminate the annoying invasions. As much as he hates the computer, he also loves it because there he has world wide access to all things motorcycle. Another day he was talking on the phone to a guy about restoring motorcycles, in another room I might add, so he could be undisturbed. Read that as his wife can’t interfere in his conversation. But suddenly he shows up at my side and tosses a hastily written note down on my desk, then motions frantically and whispers “get me on this website!” I’m watching and listening to him talk to this guy on the phone as I stop everything I’m doing to open up the web browser and log onto the site he desperately needs to see. As I’m just about there I hear him say into the phone “I’m almost there, sorry our satellite is slow.” Ha! The satellite isn’t the only thing slow around here. While technology is not one of his strong points motorcycle restoration and attention to detail definitely are. I once heard him spend nearly an hour on the phone discussing rivets. Rivets! In another room of course. He rarely talks on the phone in my presence. Seems he has learned

was waving frantically trying to get the attention of the guy-in-thegarage and he was, to put it politely, completely ignoring me. Completely ignoring me with a totally disgusted look on his face is another way of saying it. Completely ignoring me yet simultaneously snarling at me would even be a better way to say it. I’m sure he was thinking that rearranging our office would be a really great thing to do, since my desk faces his and when he sits at it to make a phone call, if I happen to look up and over the top of my computer screen I can stare right at him. Well thankfully for him his desk does not face mine, so he actually has to turn his head to see me. He was talking on the phone on this particular day and although he wasn’t originally looking at me, I guess he could feel me staring and could sense that I wanted his attention. He deeply regretted giving it to me. As talented and capable as this guy is when it comes to restoring motorcycles or doing maintenance on buildings, vehicles, acreage, you name it, the one thing he absolutely cannot do is multi-task. So if he’s talking to someone on the phone and I’m trying to get his attention about something, that just shuts down his senses. He can’t understand what I want nor does he know what the person on the other end of the phone just said either. The only thing he seems capable of doing at that point is snarling, which I’m sure would have escalated to growling at me if there wasn’t the risk that the person on the phone would think he was growling at them. I’m used to all this. I know he doesn’t want me to interrupt him. I know he’s going to get frustrated. I know he can’t listen to me and listen to someone else at the same time. So why, one might wonder, would I interrupt him during a phone call? Yes, he wondered that same thing. Even asked me that after he finally hung up.

6

something about the frustration of that. Gets off the phone from rivet man, heads over to his computer with another scraweled note and says “I’m going to try to find a website.” I just about burst out laughing. “Really?” I asked. “How are you going to do that?” “I’m hoping you’ll help me,” he said and he wasn’t even embarrassed. How can it be that I’m supposed to be totally quiet and invisible until he needs my help with something. And even if he needs my help but doesn’t realize it, such as in not knowing his own e-mail address, I’m still supposed to be quiet and invisible. I’ve tried. I really have, but being quiet and invisible is not one of my strong points. I once accused him of ignoring me after he got off the phone during another incident where I had information I knew he absolutely needed. “Why would I ignore you?” he asked with just a hint of a smirk showing on his face. “Because you think I’m pestering you and distracting you while you’re trying to do business,” I said. Now he laughed outloud. “Well, aren’t you?” he said. We have progressed a lot in the computer arena though. There was a time where he didn’t have one, didn’t want one, but still wanted to hang out on ebay and send emails around the world. So he would park his chair right next to my desk and dictate to me for what seemed like hours. I do not miss those days. Do. Not. I think much faster than he does so when he would start to dictate the email, he didn’t even have “Hi Bob” out of his mouth and I already typed the whole email for him because I had a vague idea of what he wanted to say anyway. However, as helpful as I thought that was, it really just slowed the whole process down even more. Because then he would have to stop thinking so he could read what I wrote. Then he would tell me that isn’t how he wanted to say it or what he wanted to say and I would sigh loudly and delete it all and patiently wait with my hands poised over the keyboard for the next word or sentence. And why would I do that time after time? I kept hoping that the day would come when I really could speed things up for him. Even though I know that I know that I know when he’s trying to think he prefers me to be quiet and invisible. But as hard as I try, it just ain’t me. E

The 2016 NORRA Mexican 1000 ForheMotos bikes have always been at the

T

core of off-road racing. The same ideology applies to NORRA which began in Baja back in 1967. Throughout the years, the bike’s popularity has both risen and fallen but the hard core moto rider remains the same and is truly cut from a different cloth. They take on diverse terrain solo and work themselves and their machines to the limit. Bikes are a huge part of each NORRA Mexican 1000, as the event’s unique stage rally format and five-day time line provides a now safer and easier way for riders to enjoy a run down Baja’s legendary peninsula.

LOWER ENTRY FEE

With that heritage in mind, NORRA is proud to announce its recommitment to the two wheeled competitor and has dropped the moto entry fee a thousand dollars from last year’s price to $1967. There will also be a “Pro Moto” option that costs $2967 which will include a “race for cash” payback. Also available at the 2016 NORRA Mexican 1000 are new pitting options to better address the needs of our adventurous moto competitors.

hardcore adventure riders who wish to cut down the cost of their own chase support but also raise the stakes; NORRA will provide complimentary bike supply tote transport from Ensenada to San Jose del Cabo. Mag-7 will have a dedicated team and support vehicle that will carry your bike tote. The bike totes or box (1 per team) are to be filled with the rider’s supplies. If he/ she chooses to accept the challenge, this will allow the hardcore adventure rider a true test at the rally having only him/herself and basic pit support to rely on. The totes can hold various items such as: parts, tools, a tent, a sleeping bag and will be waiting for the rider each evening.

REINFORCED SAFETY

To increase safety and maximize competitor enjoyment, once again NORRA is instituting a highly unique “split course” format that will separate the mo-

torcycles and ATVs from the four-wheel classes. This concept, along with the additional support of the NORRA MAG 7 pit support program, will help solidify a better experience for this special group of hearty NORRA competitors. Continuing our safety plan already in place, NORRA has: Live tracking, a medical helicopter, airborne radio relay, sweep trucks and

the Mexican Red Cross combined with a vetted staff ready for anything that may arise. NORRA looks forward to seeing our moto riders back at the 2016 Mexican 1000. Registration is now open and riders are enouraged to take advantage of our affordable payment plan option. Continued on next page

MAG 7 RIDES AGAIN

As before, in conjunction with the MAG 7 pitting organization, NORRA will offer free pit support for all motorcycles and ATV competitors when signing up for the 2016 NORRA Mexican 1000. Registered competitors will receive a complimentary entry into MAG 7’s “bike” level of pit support (a $600 value) which includes fuel at all pitting locations strategically placed over this year’s five-day, 1,300-mile trans-Baja Mexican 1000 rally. Additionally, for the more

The 2016 NORRA Mexican 1000 For Motos Continued THE RETURN TO BAY OF LA

Moto riders will maintain a completely separate course on the first leg, which will leave one day earlier than the cars, to the overnight in El Rosario; then bikes will make their celebrated return to Bahia de Los Angeles (Bay of LA) with the rest of the racers on Rally Day 2. Once reaching Bay of LA and NORRA’s “Pit City”, moto riders will be coming together in the “Bike Bivouac” where all

8

moto teams are welcomed to pit, camp together and pool their resources. “NORRA has enjoyed the support of the motorcycle community since hosting the very first Mexican 1000,” said NORRA President Mike Pearlman. “Our rally has evolved into a bucket list event for many people around the world – folks that couldn’t enjoy the Baja peninsula otherwise. This is especially true of the motorcycle community. Today’s announcement adds to the Mexican 1000’s ability of offering a world-class event to everyone.” Interest in the 2016 Mexican 1000 has been strong since NORRA opened event pre-registration 74 entrants signed up, 9 of which are bikes in the first few hours. As of today, a sparkling field of trucks, buggies, sedans and motorcycles/ATVs of all types is growing. Currently NORRA’s entry list includes

4 Wheel Parts Unveils Post Falls, Idaho Retail Store and Distribution Center ransamerican Auto Parts furthered

T

its major expansion initiative with the Grand Opening of its Post Falls, Idaho 4 Wheel Parts retail store and adjacent distribution center on Saturday, October 10. The event marked the growing presence of the national truck and Jeep performance product reseller into the Pacific Northwest while providing an increased level of service and delivery to customers in the region. 4 Wheel Parts welcomed area off-road enthusiasts to the family-friendly event, where they were greeted with installation

specials, hourly prize drawings, aftermarket parts giveaways and tours of the newest, state-of-the-art facility. The free event provided enthusiasts a preview of the latest truck and Jeep products from the industry’s leading manufacturers including Smittybilt, Poison Spyder and Bestop. Customers had the opportunity to engage with the 4 Wheel Parts store’s interactive showroom featuring a comprehensive array of suspension, wheels, tires, lighting products and more. Through the support of state and local leaders, Transamerican Auto Parts’ new facilities deliver immediate economic benefits to the region in addition to career-focused automotive industry employment with full benefits promising to contribute substantially to job growth and opportunities in the Coeur d’Alene metropolitan area. “We’re grateful for the investment made by Transamerican Auto Parts to create quality jobs and benefit our local community,” said Patty Shea, Chair of Jobs Plus, Inc. “Together, we have created a collaborative partnership between The City of Post Falls, Idaho Department of Labor, Jobs Plus, Jacklin Land Company, and Transamerican Auto Parts and we will support this endeavor to ensure the company’s continued success.” The 75,000 sq. ft. warehouse distribution center will supply the Pacific

Northwest and western Canada and the 10,000 sq. ft. store will meet a growing local demand for off-road performance product sales and installation. This strategic move hastens the company’s growth and ensures a rapid, uninterrupted supply of parts and accessories to 4 Wheel Parts stores. “It’s exciting to see public and private, state and local folks working together in a common purpose – better jobs and opportunities for Idaho citizens,” Governor C.L. “Butch” Otter said. “Companies like Transamerican Auto Parts aren’t just investing in their own business; they’re also investing in this community and the people of northern Idaho.” 4 Wheel Parts continues to grow its retail operations which recently opened new locations in Little Rock, Arkansas, Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and Langley, British Columbia, to bring the total of stores to 71 across North America. The location of the new facility in Post Falls diversifies TAP’s six distribution centers throughout the country. Transamerican Auto Parts and 4 Wheel Parts retail and wholesale customers across the Pacific Northwest and western Canada will immediately realize the benefits of reduced freight costs, more economic delivery and in many cases

next day pick-up of the majority of product segments in retail stores. “Idaho and Post Falls provides us with a business friendly environment in which to expand our presence in the Pacific Northwest,” said TAP President

and CEO, Greg Adler. “We now have a strategic location that gives us a foundation from which we will be able to better serve our customers throughout this region and into western Canada.”

San Diego Off-Road Coalition Receives Polaris Grant DORC is pleased to announce

S

it has been chosen by Polaris to receive a T.R.A.I.L.S. grant for the purpose of lobbying in the State of California. California State government is the focal point of off-road politics in

California. The OHV Division of State Parks (aka green sticker program) runs eight OHV parks in the State (including Ocotillo Wells) as well as gives millions of dollars out to OHV related agencies and nonprofits in the form of grants each year. The State also has the Air Resources Board, the Department of Fish and Wildlife, the Department of Motor Vehicles and other agencies that can effect OHV and are influenced by State lawmakers. All these agencies are located in the State capitol along with our representatives. Having a lobbyist in the State capitol is the best way to have a positive effect politically for OHV. E

A regulatory price premium in every gallon of gas Here’s How Government Makes Buying Gas More Expensive By Michael Bastasch Posted September 24, 2015

W

ith crude oil prices near the lowest they’ve been in five years, Americans have been enjoying the benefits of low prices at the pump. But, surprisingly, gas prices could actually be cheaper. McNeese State University chemical engineer Jacob Borden reminds us that even with low oil prices, a labyrinth of government regulations is keeping gasoline prices quite a bit more expensive than they would otherwise be. “Multiple and overlapping regulatory barriers prevent refiners from moving to alternative sources of crude and from entering markets to fill supply shortages,” Borden wrote in a Wall Street Journal oped. “The result: a regulatory price premium in every gallon of gas.” “Simply breaking down such regulatory barriers would reduce gas prices by about $0.60 a gallon, saving consumers more than $250 billion every

year,” he added. “Given the global economy, U.S. consumers could use every penny.” Federal, state and local regulations make the refining industry much less flexible than the market needs, meaning the specifics of individual refineries become more important in delivering gasoline to local markets. When one refinery goes out, it could mean huge price increases for select communities across the country. That’s only the tip of the regulatory iceberg; EPA regulations are also strangling refiners’ flexibility and causing prices to be higher. The EPA has clean air regulations which force refiners to use more costly methods of producing fuel and then requires them to mix in biofuels. “Gasoline therefore has to be stripped of so-called light-ends, increasing refining costs while reducing the yield of marketable fuel,” Borden wrote. “A similar set of regulatory constraints is affecting the retail price of diesel … Meeting the new specifications has left refiners with three options: use only the lightest and sweetest crudes, operate equipment harder and sacrifice yields, or invest to maintain capacity.” “And so this regulatory patchwork builds a price premium into every gallon, essentially to compensate refiners for providing fuels that meet ever-increasing regulatory and production demands,” Borden wrote. “The result: When oil prices rise, the rise is reflected in retail fuel prices. But when oil prices fall, the relief you feel at the pump is limited.”

president has the audacity to claim he is ‘revitalizing’ these communities,” said Tom Pyle, president of the free-market American Energy Alliance. “President Obama’s destructive agenda has robbed coal communities of their jobs and their livelihood. Now he wants to be commended for throwing taxpayer money at a problem he created,” Pyle said. Coal mines shed some tens of

thousands of jobs including 7,500 jobs in the last year alone, according to federal data, as coal prices fall due to shrinking demand and companies look to get in the financial black again. Appalachia has been one of the hardest hit regions of the country, with thousands more miners out of work and not a lot of job options for them. Obama may be trying to buy back some goodwill after losing coal union support in 2012 by offering hard hit regions funding to retrain workers and diversify regional economies away from coal. In total, the White House has announced $14.5 million in funding

Obama Puts Coal Miners Out Of Work Then Offers Them Funding For Job Training By Michael Bastasch Posted October 16, 2015

T

he Obama administration is offering coal country $14.5 million in federal funding for programs to retrain out of work coal miners and for economic development after imposing regulations to shrink the coal industry. It’s been called a “grim solace” to coal workers who lost their jobs by the thousands in the past few years due to increased competition from natural gas and federal regulations aimed at decreasing coal use for electricity. Thousands of coal plant and mine workers were let go under President Barack Obama. Now, critics are hammering the president for throwing money at coal miners his regulations put out of work. “After years of working to fulfill his campaign promise to bankrupt the coal industry, the

EPA regulations are also strangling refiners’ flexibility and causing prices to be higher. 12

for such programs and announced $10 million in Department of Commerce grants. “The POWER Initiative awards funds that will be invested in local economic and workforce development initiatives to help build resilient regional economies amidst a changing power sector landscape,” the White house said in a statement. But it’s unclear exactly how much funding will go towards retraining thousands of out-ofwork coal miners. The Commerce Department is spending nearly $2 million of its funding on “strategic planning efforts” for economic development. The rest of the department’s $8 million will go towards “existing economic development plans.” This tranche of funding will also go towards things like “electronic commerce” for eastern Kentucky and plans to “improve broadband access” in Tennessee. But even with federal funding for retraining, it’s hard for lifelong coal miners to find work that pays as well. “There’s just no alternative to coal in the South that pays as well,” Rob Turley, a 61-year-old former coal truck driver, told the Pittsburgh-Tribune Review last year. “In the South, it’s dismal right now.” E

A

jack is one of those pieces of equipment that is just plain essential for four wheeling. The stock jack supplied by the manufacturer isn’t going to help off road: terrain is rarely level and never smooth. You have three styles to choose from: Hi-Lift, X-Jack and bottle jack. The first step in any situation is to make sure the vehicle cannot move. Sometimes the emergency brake isn’t enough, because you might be lifting that wheel. You might have to chock the opposite side. Seldom is the terrain flat and level. Run the winch out to a tree or stretch a strap tightly from the vehicle to be jacked. Always be careful when jacking. Hi-Lift Jack

the lever takes off, you’ll get “hammer thumb.” Keep your head out of the way, as well for the same reason. A basic Hi-lift runs about $70. They’re rated to nearly 5000 lbs. for the first 4 feet. With safety accessories, you’re looking at about $230. Though there are safety issues, the Hi-Lift jack is an extremely versatile and useful tool. Don’t leave home without one in the group. X-Jack

The X-jack is really helpful in sand and snow. You slide it under the vehicle, and use exhaust to inflate the bag and raise the vehicle. Watch for sharp edges of the body or frame, and keep the bag away from the exhaust pipe. It’s a good idea to place padding on top of the bag. The X-Jack comes with a pad, but I suggest grabbing

The Hi-Lift is very versatile but has a lot of safety risks. It is versatile in the sense you can lift (jack) with it, you can “pole vault” with it, and you can use it as a “poor man’s” winch in a pinch. Lift as close as possible to the tire you want to get off the ground. If you lift in the middle of either bumper, the vehicle is likely to tip in one direction. Vehicles today don’t have notches in the frame for a jack. So latch onto the bumper as close to the affected wheel as you can. The base on a Hi-Lift jack is pretty small. That makes it challenging to lift on uneven surfaces. Before jacking, make sure that the vehicle cannot move. You may want to purchase a safety kit. That includes an extra-wide base and support cables. one or two floor mats for additional “Pole vaulting” involves shifting a padding. Make sure there are no kinks in vehicle sideways while jacked up. Let’s the hose as you’re playing it out. say you’re stuck and just need to move a The X-Jack works best with two foot or two to one side. Set the jack near people: one to hold the funnel tightly on the middle of the opposite side, at a slight the exhaust pipe and the other to keep angle. Once both wheels on the near (jack) side are off the ground, the vehicle will fall away. Repeat as needed to move away from the obstruction. With a chain on one end and a tree strap on the other, the Hi-Lift can be used as a “poor man’s” winch by laying it sideways. The chain allows you to adjust the distance from the vehicle to your anchor point. Since you can only move the stuck vehicle about 3 feet at a time the chain makes it easier to reset the jack each time. By looping the chain around the “nose” of the jack, you can shorten it with a grab hook. Besides all the hard work, the difficulty is keeping the vehicle in place every time you reset for a new bite. Hi-Lift recovery kit has all the gear your need to solve this problem. You need to be careful with Hi-Lifts. Use only on solid ground and when the main part is straight up and down. If you must jack on sand or soft soil, place a piece of plywood or other board under the foot. Make sure the handle is straight up when at rest. When lowering a vehicle, place a hand at the top of the center piece and gently coax the lever up and down. Keep your fingers on top and clear; if

the bag in position. If working alone, use a compressor. The bag also has a valve stem to attach a compressor so you can tap into that while positioning the bag. Be careful if lifting on sand. We tend to use high RPM in the sand. This causes a hotter exhaust, and it’s easier to melt the hose. If you have a compressor, use that instead. You may find that the bag quits inflating the last foot or so. It is necessary to run the engine at a higher RPM (than idle) to fully inflate the bag. Another reason to have help. A drawback is that the kit takes up a fair amount of space in the vehicle. Consider tying it on the outside or roof if space is a premium. Bottle jack

Compact and more stable than the Hi-Lift, a bottle jack allows you to lift just an axle as opposed to an entire side of the vehicle. A big disadvantage is that you don’t always have sufficient clearance under the vehicle (use the Hi-lift or Xjack). The second downside is that it won’t always lift high enough for what you need. The post usually extends only about 5- 6 inches. That’s why you may want to buy extensions. If you don’t care to do

that, try a block of wood. Bottle jacks come in a variety of sizes. A 3-ton model is sufficient for most 4WD use. For larger vehicles like a Sportsmobiles, a 5-ton jack is better. I’ve seen good results with electric models. A standard bottle jack runs $40 to $60 at auto parts stores. Regardless of the style of jack you have, you must always use it safely. Before jacking, make sure that the vehicle cannot move. Use the jack properly, and—in the case of the HiLift—keep your hands and fingers (and even body) out of harm’s way. Be patient. Sometimes you need to think through the lift process to avoid serious injury. Learn the proper way to use the jack, and practice back home to become familiar with it. Finally, if you must work under the vehicle while it’s raised, use your spare tire or other sturdy object as a safety jack. I recommend you carry at least two of the above! H

It Should Be Malpractice!

ello Off Roaders ! Boy do I have a case study for you folks this month. I've been in practice since 1983 and have gotten used to the fact that very few medical doctors (MD's) think much about referring one of their own patients to a chiropractor (DC) for any given condition that may be helpful for that person. About a month ago, I got a phone call from Mexico. The lady on the phone was telling me she has had severe migraine headaches since she was about 15 years old. She is now 40 years old. I asked her if she had been to any MD's, or a neurologist and she told be she had been to several over the years. All of them just kept sending her for more drugs. She said she had been sent out for 5 MRI's in the last 25 years, several CAT scans and x-rays. She was even sent out for psychiatric evaluation as none of the MD's could do much with her nearly constant, severe headaches. This nice math teacher at 40 years old was at her ends as the drugs were no longer helping her control her headaches and pain levels. She was now having difficulty functioning with her normal daily routines. The nice guys at El Agave, a Mexican restaurant next door to my office, knew her and told her to call me for her headache issues. From where she was in Baja California, she decided to give me a try as her last resort. I told her ahead of time that I could not be sure I could help her with her headaches until I met with her and evaluated her condition.

14

It was about a five hour drive including the border wait that she made with her mom, to get to my office. They planned to stay here in San Diego if I thought I could help her. She arrived at my office after that long drive. I examined her, mainly her neck. I put her through the standard orthopedic and neurological tests that any good doctor should do when evaluating for neck soreness and headaches. The real thing that stood out was how sore her neck was just below the skull on the right side. No one would notice this unless they actually took the time to feel the area with their hands as DC's do during an examination. MD's just generally talk to you, maybe have you move around a bit and send you to the pharmacy for drugs, then tell you to come back in a month if the drugs do not work. This person's neck was so sore and tender, you could barely touch it with light pressure. I could tell right away that her upper neck vertebrae were misaligned, locked in place and causing severe local muscles spasms just under the skull. This condition can irritate the nerves that come out of the spine in the same area. This is what DC's call a subluxation. This condition with spinal misalignment, locked up motion and/ or abnormal motion (usually lack of motion), muscle tenderness/spasm and irritation to the adjacent nerves from the spine. The spinal subluxation for a DC is what a cavity is to a dentist. It's mainly what we do to help folks with health

issues, we treat and correct subluxations. The spine is rarely, if ever “dislocated” or actually “out of place.” It is locked “in place” like a link of chain that cannot move properly. As this was this woman's first chiropractic treatment, I decided to give her a gentle, baby type adjustment, as I did not want to scare her off. The adjustment, even though it was gentle, caused a release of pressure in her neck that went off like firecrackers! I think the guys down at the gas station a block away heard the popping, cracking sound! It was a huge release! The lady’s eyes got big and she looked at me in disbelief. I rechecked her neck for pain and tenderness and it was almost 100% better. I asked her if she was okay and she said that she had never experienced anything like that in her life. Her headache was 90% better within seconds after the chiropractic adjustment. I did a little muscle work, stretching and then told her that I thought I could help her with her headaches. She got a hotel room and stayed in San Diego for 5 days to get follow up treatment. After 4 more days, her headaches were gone, 100%, for the first time in 25 years! She went back down to Mexico and returned a month later for follow up treatment and a slight flare-up of the headaches. Her neck had been subluxated, locked up for 25 years so it was not going to be cured in one treatment. This lady had been “labeled” with a misdiagnosis of Migraine Headaches when in fact, it was a Cervicogenic Headache, meaning headaches caused by a neck problem! What do I see as the real problem here? Well, since this patient had headaches for 25 years, since age 15, (she was in a car accident at age 15 by the way), not ONE of the MD's suggested, recommended, that maybe she should try seeing a chiropractor for her headaches, NOT ONE! That should be malpractice! Whether that is arrogance or ignorance, a combination of both, I do not know? What I do know is that I see this same thing over and over in my 30 years

S&S OFF ROAD MAGAZINE - NOVEMBER 2015 - www.SS-OffRoadMagazine.com

of being a DC. If a patient had come in to see me and I saw that patient had a tumor or an infection and I told the patient they just need 30 more chiropractic treatments instead of referring them to an MD that could better help their condition, that would be malpractice on my part. But when MD's just send folks out for more drugs, more tests, as what happened to this nice lady for 25 years of headaches, it's just standard procedure for the medical profession! Yep, sure is folks, sad as that is, it is the way the medical profession works. Drugs first, then maybe exercises or physical therapy, then surgery. The MD's are in bed with Big Pharma and never think of referring a patient to a DC. It should be criminal. It causes folks to fall into classic Rx drug use for years, decades and worse. It should be chiropractic and/or physical therapy first for all non-medical emergency conditions, drugs next, surgery as a last resort. The chiropractor should not be the last resort but the first resort! Most folks just do not know any better and therefore do not know all their options with a given health condition. Then politicians, MD's and regular folks wonder why we have a nation of prescription drug addicts? Over 100,000 Americans die each year from prescription drug complications and adverse reactions. Only about 15,000 die from illegal drug use a year. So, where should the real war on drugs be focused? Now you know. Tell folks what you know and spread the word so folks can make better, informed choices when it comes to their health care. Politics and lobbyists

A

lmost every off-road problem we have is based on politics. The flat tailed lizard and lawsuit in Ocotillo Wells, the lawsuit still running in the dunes, every wilderness area you can't drive in, all got their start from legislation. The flat tailed horned lizard is a state problem, while the Pierson's milk vetch is a federal problem. We can have problems at city and county levels, though not as often. California and the federal government both have Endangered Species Acts. How do these acts come to be? Legislators introduce bills. Bills move through a process and at the other end become law. So how can the average person on the trail have any effect on the process? Best way is to join an organization that caters to your needs, get on their email list and wait for an email that says “Call your representative and ask them to support/oppose this bill! Every state and federal legislator has two offices, one in their district and the

SDORC would like to announce that we will be hiring a lobbyist! We just received word that our T.R.A.I.L.S. grant request to Polaris was approved and we will be getting $10,000 to use for lobbying! We can't thank Polaris enough for believing in us and we will be writing about the activities of our Polaris lobbyist in this column for some time in the future. This will be for a California State lobbyist. This is important because the OHV division of State Parks (aka, green sticker program) goes through State government. We won't be working alone, there are other organizations that care about OHV and we will be coordinating with them. So stay tuned. E

So how can the average person on the trail have any effect on the process? Best way is to join an organization that caters to your needs . . .

Your own lobbyist can be a hero if they represent you well. other in the capitol. Every office has staff who work for the representitive. If you hate or love a bill, best thing to do is call your rep's district office and talk to a staff member. Tell them the bill number and what you think of it. If you really want to have an effect, go or have someone go to the capitol and talk to the staff there. It can be hard to find the right person to swing by the capitol for you, so what do you do? You can hire a lobbyist. A lot of people believe lobbyists are bad people. Really, they are only "bad" when they represent someone who opposes what you want. Your own lobbyist can be a hero if they represent you well.

Lucas Oil Arizona Regional Rounds 7 & 8 - September 11-12, 2015 Chandler AZ By Scott Spinning Photos by Spinning Wheels Photography

S

eptember 11th and 12th were the latest races in the Lucas Oil Off Road Arizona Regional series. It was the second program that was featured with night racing at Wild Horse Pass Motorsports Park in Chandler, AZ, for the cooler temperatures. Added to the program was the Fear Farm Desert Truck Challenge, with the winner taking home a six foot tall trophy. Also added was the Class 11 Coalition MAXTRAX world series of bugs’ race. There was even a new event for the smaller racers, the addition of the RZR 170 class made it’s debut with several young racers showing they can hold their own on the track. The theme for the weekend was to honor the firefighter, police officers and military personnel as well as those who made the ultimate sacrifice fourteen years ago. There was even a fireworks display which went off with a bang. There were monster truck rides with any donations going to the Fallen Firefighter Memorial Fund. The season is coming to an end with only a few more races on the calendar. Point leaders are closing some gaps between themselves, and distancing themselves from the others. It is not about that, it is about racing and enjoying the smell of Sunoco fuel and dust mixture, or throwing dirt clods at the

person behind you, trying to stay in the front of the pack and keeping it on two wheels. Congratulation to all of the competitors and to all of you who walked on the podium and took home a trophy. As always you can find more information on the regional race by going to www.lucasoilregionalaz.com and to find more photos of the AZ regional races check out www.spinningwheelsphotography. com.

T

he final stage of the 2015 John Burr Cycles Endurance series came to an exhilarating climax with total turnout at fifty entries including two Ironman entries. The course was reported to be approximately eight miles long, but did not go back to the Pavilion as has been common before, due to a concert. Both ridges were silty and as usual had hiding rocks and other obstructions. The racers were greeted by near 100 degree day temperatures that caused at least one racer to get a saline IV after becoming severely dehydrated. We have a lot of reporting to do, let’s get at it. The Pro class which is limited to one bike and four racers, was a who’s who of Southern California off-road racers. Benny Breck and Ryan Dudek. OX Motorsports (OX-2) skipper Colton Udall, has a few of these Glen Helen Endurance titles under his belt and had his longtime racing pal Mark Samuels, speedy Sean Collier, and Justin Jones by his side. Ryan Reina was the chief of the JBC541 team and was accompanied by Sean Lipanovich, long time Southern California racer Jeff Loop, and multiple Loretta Lynn’s Champ Ryan Surratt. Seven total entries in the Pro with lap two being the first full lap, JBC-541 came through the beeper in first on lap two but the JCR-9 was just getting warmed up and moved into first by the end of lap three. Big 6 ripper Blayne Thompson (BT-7) led a team consisting of Dalton Shirey, Justin Wallis and Dominic La Fontane. OX-2 takes up space in second and BT-7 has moved into third on lap three. With Bach on the JCR-9 bike he started to sense something wasn’t right so he took it easy getting back to the pits. Reportedly, finding a crank case issue, the team solved it but something was not right and the beast would not restart. They eventually tore down the top end finding a cracked piston as a source of the problem. Spending the next two hours rebuilding the engine as hopes of a victory went away into the warmth of the night. OX-2 had fallen ten minutes and forty-five back of JCR-9 on lap thirty-five, but quickly chiseled that down to six minutes and thirtyseven seconds by the time JCR-9 broke. As to what happens in this race of long hours and unrelenting pounding of the mind, body, and machine enforcing the saying, “it’s not over until it’s over”. OX-2 knows a bit how that works but it is their time as they leap into the lead on lap forty-two. JBC-541 inherits second as the threat of highly skilled PC-1 squad now in third looms. PC-1 sped into second on lap forty-eight and sitting almost fourteen minutes off the lead of OX-2. PC-1 fell back to third on lap sixty-nine and reportedly had some issues including a clutch problem. The finely honed OX-2 team ran consistent laps after taking the lead, “steady as she goes” for the JBC 24-Hour Pro win. JBC-541 raced to a deserving second, while PC-1 kept the machine running and in for third. The Ironman class saw the multiple

Despite losing two racers through attrition before the witching hour, the squad marched through the darkness and the treacherous one line canyon, the rock section that became a gnarly mogul section as the race progressed. Unrelenting, the remaining four platooned, ambushing any personal inhibitions, physical limitations and conquering them. They completed fifty-two laps for fortieth overall and the class win. When asked for a short answer on what they thought about the race, here is what some of them had to say: Mason Klein looked at me and blurted “Crazy!” Speedy Eric Burdell and Hagen said

“Fun!” One of the remaining four racers was the lone lady on the team, Caitlyn. With a smile a mile wide, she looked like she was ready to get back on the bike and do another 24 Hours. She said she was caught off guard by the single track canyon, but she mastered it and proved
