Then of course I realized how that was totally contradictory to what I had just told him about always voting in presidential elections. “Actually I would vote third party,” I corrected myself “and I would choose Donald Trump.” “You really think that will be a choice?” he asked genuinely curious. “If Jeb Bush is the Republican nominee I absolutely do think that will be a choice,” I told him and went on to reiterate “I will either vote third party or will not vote if those are the choices.” So after hanging up the phone, two he last thing I want to do when I’m things occurred to me. He laughed right along with me and said “I thought you might feel that way.” He compared his state of Florida to our state and he was even in more distress at the thought of a Jeb Bush presidency than I was because he’s already lived under Jeb Bush — Sean Hannity leadership right there in his state. 2016 election cycle broke all nonsporting event viewing records for all time. With 24 million viewers, this debate tripled the 2012 election debate high viewer record of 7.6 million. So if nothing else with Trump on the ballot a record number of voters will very likely turn out if for no other reason than to vote against him. But at least they’ll be voting. I, on the other hand, have been excited since the first politically incorrect statement left his mouth regarding illegal immigration and continuing on through his insults of the ultra liberal pretend conservative McCain and right on through his Rosie O’Donnell comments during the debate.

The liberal policies of the EPA and Endangered Species Act have worked in concert for decades to wreak havoc on our industry, damaging the off road economy as well as our enjoyment of the sport. Admittedly I knew virtually nothing about Donald Trump before he formally threw his hat in the ring so other than being aware the man existed I may have an advantage over people like say, my sister, who said I was causing her blood to boil because I was even considering voting for Trump. She apparently is very aware of many things he has said and done in his public lifetime, as are some friends of mine who also didn’t seem overly excited about the man. The biggest draw to me is his total unconcern about being politically correct. In fact its too wonderful to just say he is “unconcerned” it’s more like the fact that he takes immense pleasure in stating the politically incorrect opinions that many of us share but have been forced to suppress. What, you may be wondering, as some of our occasional Facebook frenemies boldly speak out on our site, does politics have to do with off roading? I say to those who don’t know, it’s no wonder we’re fighting off road legal battles on a daily basis with so many out there unaware of the connection. Putting aside my concern for moral, social and religious political beliefs, the very fact that virtually 100% of environmental extremists are of the liberal mindset is reason enough to vote conservative. The EPA and Endangered Species Act have worked in concert for decades to wreak havoc on our industry,

About that Navigation Story... Hi Sherri, Oh, my gosh!! Never laughed so hard and so long (with doubled over stomach) in such a long time. Thank you, I’m so glad to know that I’m not the only one out there. I couldn’t have summed it up any better from a “navigator’s” point of view. My husband and I “always” start out with excitement and confidence, just eager for another trip! Us too, we have the print-outs and the Thomas Guide pages marked. But once we’re out there, something happens, maybe its the traffic, or the panic of the unknown, or just trying to do it “right” this time! (perfect trip) LOL. We’ll even “laugh” about it at a much later time, sometimes of years past events that could have been disastrous. So we’ve developed a motto saying “every road leads somewhere!” I always try to smooth over getting lost with, “So how about lunch?” Only a few times has that worked. It is usually a “very” quiet ride home. But isn’t true love grand! We’ve been married for 30 years. We’re

Thank you Sherri, My mom and dad were so happy to see the picture (Off Road Dads, June 2015) and it made me feel good too. As like most desert racing families we stick close together and love family and the sport we have. My family grew up in the desert and it became my passion at an early age. Then we graduated to “family enduro’s” where we had my mom, sister, me and dad all riding on the same minute together. Then I graduated to more racing activities after I was 18 and off to the races I went. Then it turned to an industry job that now has had me at Honda for 31 years! So like you our jobs are part of our love and passion. Thanks again for your lil magazine. It puts a smile on my face when it arrives and I get to sit and read about all the new fast guys in our area. Keep up the great work and I look forward to sharing more in the future. Here is a shot for your “moms in racing” section for the future. Thanks again for what you do! CHUCK MILLER Torrance CA E

arnegie State Vehicular Recreation Area is currently looking to expand. About 3500 acres adjacent to the park have been purchased with OHV money and the State is going through the process to decide on whether to expand Carnegie. Recently a comment period ended for the Preliminary General Plan and Environmental Impact Report. There were plenty of negative comments filed by those who oppose OHV anywhere. Those who oppose got agencies, municipalities and NIMBYs (not in my back yard) to comment in opposition to the expansion. Many, however, commented on the benefits of the expansion. CORVA held a comments training class (comments project) on how to write strong comments in favor of the expansion. State Parks is reviewing the input and will decide on the next step in the near future.

Glamis The Imperial Sand Dunes Advisory committee met recently to discuss the

The Endangered angered Off Roader The newsletter of the

By Ed Stovin upcoming season. Each meeting the BLM gives reports on operations, law enforcement and emergency medical. Because there hasn’t been much action in the sand since our last meeting in May, our discussion centered on maintenance, the upcoming season and our wish list. It turns out that signing the area closed for the PMV plant requires the work of at least two full time staff year around. Because the sand shifts so much, signs are continuously being buried or exposed. They are still looking for campground hosts. If you have any interest and would like to know more, contact the El Centro BLM office 760-337-4400. Neil Hamada showed us a new material the BLM is using to reduce erosion. The area where the most erosion happens is along Wash Road. When water runs from the late summer monsoons, it damages the dirt road. They found a material that looks like honeycomb netting that is put on the ground and the spaces are filled with soil. We are hopeful this will work as planned. Speaking of Wash Road, the restrooms there have been moved a little ways to the west. This will allow the Wash Road to go straight without a stop sign. Two accessible parking spots have been made next to accessible restrooms, making the area compliant with regulations. There is a very expensive paving project under way at the dunes. It will be done in phases and will make a variety of

improvements. The one that stuck out the most in my mind is the end of Gordon’s Well Road will get a loop put in big enough for an RV to turn around. Now the road simply stops. Office manager Tom Zale said if he were king for a day, he would create a new ranger station by Gecko Road and Highway 78. The current station is getting pretty old. Space is limited inside and on big weekends, injured people may be attended to in the same room that arrested people are being processed. The advisory committee is planning to work on finding ways to bring in a new ranger station.

Lobbying A lot of people think that “lobbyist” is

a bad word. They think lobbyists are against what’s good about our country. Another way to look at them is when they represent those who oppose you, they are bad. But when lobbyists work for you or represent your way of thinking, they take on a much better view. The job of a lobbyist is to persuade legislators and government agencies to see issues the way their clients do. As an off-roader, all I want is to be left alone so I can ride my motorcycle out there. The problem is that there are people who work to keep that from happening. They work through the system, trying to restrict us with laws and regulations. As president of SDORC, I also work within the system to protect the rights of off-roaders. Unfortunately, laws and regulations are often made far from my home in San Diego. I wish I could hop on a flight to Sacramento any time an issue comes up, but that’s just not practical for a working guy like me. What I want is someone to represent me (and all off-roaders) in

Sacramento. That someone would be a lobbyist. Someone who would be watching the legislative bills being introduced and let me know of any that affect OHV. Then we would work together to optimize the outcome. SDORC had a lobbyist before, but the great recession was hard on us. I would love to hire another, but they cost money and SDORC has a very limited budget right now. We are having a fundraising fun run November 7th at The Dip near Superstition Mountain. I hope all of you will make it out to support us and have a great time. Look for details at sdorc.org and elsewhere in this magazine. San Diego County alone has about 100,000 registered off-road vehicles. If I could get one dollar from every OHV owner in San Diego County, I could do good things for us. Just $1. I would hire lobbyists and lawyers to work on our issues. SDORC accepts PayPal on our website www.sdorc.org and even one dollar will help. E

their event pits the fastest racers in the southwest against the entire West Coast on their tight, technical, single track lined with Cholla cactus mixed with some fast washes and rocky elevation changes! As with all the MRAN sanctioned rounds the entire race day will take place on Saturday, starting with the Pee Wee’s on their 2 mile course and the Youth Racers on a 10 mile course. Then immediately afterwards a few more technical trails will be added to fill out the 1.5 Hour C race headed up by the Women Racers and the day will be headlined by the 2.5 hour Pro/A/B race. One thing that will be most unique about the event is the start procedure. Laughlin has very strict BLM regulations on how many racers will be able to start at once so we will be utilizing a start very similar to that of the Snowshoe GNCC on the East Coast starting 10 racers at a time based on their point standings! THE DUNES FIGHT IS FAR FROM OVER By Bob Mason, ASA President he battle to maintain access to public land for motorized recreation will never go away. Yes, we were successful in regaining 40,000 acres at Imperial Sand Dunes. This took over a million dollars, more than ten years and a considerable volunteer effort to make this happen. Now, the anti-access folks have appealed the Judge’s ruling. So the battle goes on! The same anti-access organizations

T

have asked the California Fish and Game Commission to list the flat-tailed horned lizard as an endangered species. This initially resulted in the shut-down of Solar Projects in the California Desert while agency staff considered the request. Will the Imperial Sand Dunes be on the “Hit List” next? The California Department of Parks and Recreation and Air Pollution Control District are currently wrestling over jurisdiction over air quality at Oceano Dunes. Imperial Sand Dunes will be next. Dust will be an issue to deal with. When Judge Illston issued her findings she ordered the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) to complete a Recovery Plan for the Peirson’s milk-vetch by 2019. ASA will collaborate with the USFWS to fulfill the Judge’s order. Anti-access groups are advocating riding on marked trails only at Ocotillo Wells State Vehicle Recreation Area in California. This could eliminate open riding at Ocotillo Wells and could be considered at Imperial Sand Dunes. All of these issues have the potential of limiting motorized vehicle access to public land. What Does This Mean? What Can You Do? Motorized recreation enthusiasts must continue to support the ASA. It takes money and volunteers to neutralize the antiaccess groups. To be more specific: 1.Sign up as a $25/ yr ASA Supporting Member. This will cost you nothing as ASA will send you a $25 gift card from Rocky Mountain ATV. 2. Become an ASA Business Sponsor. For $50 to $1,000 per year, you will support the fight to maintain our riding area and

he Eddie Mulder West Coast Dirt Track Series in Willow Springs CA October 3rd and 4th is coming soon. A $30,000 Specialty Fabrications dash for cash purse provided by Mark and Randy Zimmerman was announced earlier this summer. Now Eddie Mulder is excited to also announce a pro purse of at least another $30,000. Digger Helm has stepped up with his part, $30,000, of the weekend Pro Main purse. The total purse will be a combined amount from Digger and Ramspur Winery. As of this writing Eddie is waiting to hear from Ramspur Winery to announce their contribution to the weekend purse. New this year, Eddie has also had to jump through additional hoops to allow the West Coast Dirt Track Series October Willow Springs weekend. Due to the ongoing drought in California he has had to apply for a “special use” permit to get the water that is needed for proper track prep. The permit application has been submitted and needs approval by California’s Governor Brown. He is currently waiting to hear from Governor Brown. Once the Governor has given approval and Ramspur Winery has provided an amount for the purse, the West Coast Dirt Track Series will announce and post the pre-registration forms to register for the West Coast Dirt Track Series Willow Springs October 3rd and 4th weekend. Watch us on Facebook or check our website www.WestCoastDirtTrackSeries.com for more information. E

KNEE PAIN

H

ello Off Roaders out there! Knees can be be a real pain in the rear for many an off road enthusiast. From simple mild sprain strains to complex fractures and ligament tears, the knees are one of the most injured parts of the body. Most motocross and ATV folks will have some sort of knee injury as they use their legs for additional suspension and to keep body position correct while riding. In a buggy or a Jeep, the knees are protected as they are not generally weight bearing. With ATV’s and bikes, the legs are right out there and often used to correct and or keep the rider balanced and on the bike. Part of the problem that makes the knee joint so vulnerable to injury other

than what I just pointed out is the fact that the knee has the MOST leverage applied to it than ANY other joint in the human body. The long bones of the leg, the Femur (thigh bone) and the Tibia (shin bone), make forces applied to the knee huge. These forces from that leverage can and do apply a lot of force to the knee joint and if there is rotational force (torque) as well it’s a triple whammy folks! Many knee injuries to motocross and off road riders occur as they stick out their foot in a corner or to turn in soft sand or mud. As the rider’s boot touches the ground, it can get caught while the bike and rider are still moving forward or while pivoting in the corner. This can also happen when the rider is going straight at

speed or slow and dabs the foot and the boot catches the ground, even for a split second. A crash is not required! Knee braces of high quality can help prevent these injuries but are not a cure all, just as helmets. Anyone, even with knee braces on, can still have an injury. One of the more common knee injuries we see in off road or motocross is a tear of the Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL), along with the Medial Collateral Ligament (MCL) and the Medial Meniscus (cartilage pad, medial side of knee). The orthopedic surgeons call this “the Golden Triangle.” The ACL’s job is to stabilize the knee from front to back (along with the PCL) and prevent the tibia from coming out of normal motions in relation to the femur. If this ligament is damaged it leads to instability and the cartilage pads, meniscus, like Teflon pads, can begin to tear and break down. This all leads to pain and swelling and eventually arthritis (inflammation of the joint), often chronic and long term, leading to Degenerative Arthritis Disease. A good sports injury doctor or orthopedist can use certain specific tests to evaluate the various structures of the knee for integrity. These tests can reveal what structures of the knee have been injured and to what extent. An x-ray will only reveal damage to the bones, in general. An MRI scan will show the soft tissues as well, including ligament (bone to bone connectors), tendons (muscle to bone connectors) and cartilage (the Teflon like lining and pads of the joints). An x-ray is great to see possible fractures. The MRI is best for all the rest of the structures. Depending on the history of the knee injury, the results of the orthopedic testing and evaluation, generally determines

14 S&S OFF ROAD MAGAZINE - SEPTEMBER 2015 - www.SS-OffRoadMagazine.com

what needs to be done to recover from the injury. Ligaments of the knee keep the bones of the knee in proper place and prevent excess motion during use and loads. Laxity and/or complete tears of the ligaments will lead to additional damage and most likely require the skills of a good orthopedic surgeon to resolve these injuries properly. Mild and even moderate sprains/strains to the knee can often be resolved with proper physical therapy, medications and exercises. Some of the most common types of conservative, non-surgical treatments include ultrasound, electrical muscle stimulation, specific strengthening exercises, braces/supports, swimming and bicycling. Supplements can include Vitamin C and glucosamine sulfate. Of course, the usual ice, rest and elevation of the knee is included along with compression of a wrap bandage support. Generally, if a person can put weight on the knee without any pain and there was only mild swelling after an injury to the knee, it should heal in about 4 to 6 weeks. There is no substitute for proper, professional medical care and an x-ray to rule out more serious injuries like a fracture. Be aware that the lateral, nonweight bearing bone of the lower leg, running lateral (to the side) of the Tibia, the Fibula, can be fractured and painful, yet one can often walk on the leg. It is best to protect the knee with care until proper evaluation has been obtained. With older ages, arthritis can set in and cause pain without acute injury. Wear and tear to the knees over the years with gravity applying it’s relentless force, wears out the once smooth cartilage that lines the knee joints. The cartilage starts to get defects in it, not unlike a nice new smooth Teflon lined frying pan that becomes damaged with use and food begins to stick to the now rougher surface. If there were prior injuries to the knee over the years, like torn cartilages/ meniscus, this degeneration can be accelerated, as it is with my own knees after 40 plus years of dirt bikes and sports. The good news is that if you have worn out your knees, the newer knee replacements seem to be very good for most folks, as have hip replacements, for decades now. No, they do not have replacement spines, so better see your chiropractor on a regular basis and keep the original equipment as best you can from wear and tear. This article is not intended to be a comprehensive review of all knee injuries or treatments. It should give the riders out there some basic points about how to deal with a knee injury. gauge how much cleaning up the Animas and San Juan rivers could cost. Interior said the costs of a huge oil spill in the Arctic could range from $10 billion to $27.7 billion.

Gov’t Watchdog To Investigate EPA’s Massive Toxic Waste Spill

EPA’s Toxic Mine Spill Could Cost Taxpayers $28 Billion To Clean Up Articles reprinted with permission from The Daily Caller - www.dailycaller.com By Michael Bastasch Posted August 18, 2015

N

ot only will the EPA wastewater spill in Colorado cause environmental damages for decades to come, but it could also end up costing taxpayers tens of billions of dollars, according to a new report. The right-leaning American Action Forum estimates the total cost for responding to the Gold King Mine Spill could range from $338 million to $27.7 billion based on the federal government’s own cost-benefit analyses for cleaning up toxic waste and oil spills. “There is no direct precedent for the toxic Animas River spill in Colorado and

past regulatory actions from agencies, but we can learn from previous benefit-cost estimates,” writes Sam Batkins, AAF’s director of regulatory policy, adding that he “evaluated four recent regulations’ benefit figures to approximate the cost of the current spill in the Mountain West.” Earlier this month, EPA-supervised contractors working on limiting wastewater discharge from abandoned mines in southern Colorado ended up unleashing 3 million gallons of waste from the Gold King Mine after breaking a water-retention wall with heavy equipment. Mine waste has spread hundreds of miles to Lake Powell in Utah since the initial breach, and experts have stated it could take decades to clean up the mine waste that’s spread throughout Navajo Nation. In its latest press update on the mine spill, the EPA said that “drinking water

systems and recreational activity along the Animas and San Juan rivers can resume based on water quality sampling results” done by state and federal officials. The agency, however, is still providing water to locals for drinking and agriculture. The question now for taxpayers is how much EPA’s blunder is going to cost them. One pending EPA rule governing the discharge of toxic metals from power plants claims benefits of $424 million from reducing 0.47 billion pounds of pollutants. AAF adjusted these figures to match the EPA-caused spill of mine waste — which included lead and arsenic — into Colorado’s Animas River and found the spill cleanup could cost $2.7 million. But that’s on the low end. AAF also looked at the Interior Department’s claimed benefits for avoiding a “catastrophic oil spill” in the Arctic to

he EPA inspector general’s office has announced it will investigate the agencycaused mine spill in Colorado earlier this month. The spill resulted in millions of gallons of toxic waste reaching rivers in Colorado and New Mexico. “We will request documents, and interview relevant managers and staff in these locations and elsewhere as necessary,” the IG’s office wrote in a letter to EPA officials. Earlier this month, EPA workers broke through a retaining wall with heavy equipment while working at the Gold King Mine. Ironically, the agency was working in the area to stem the flow of hazardous mining waste into nearby waterways, but instead the agency ended up spilling 3 million gallons of it into the Animas River. That plume of toxic waste spread into more rivers, causing Colorado and New Mexico to declare a state of emergency. The EPA IG’s decision to investigate the spill and the agency’s response comes after Republican lawmakers urged watchdogs look into the event to try and figure out exactly what happened and if the agency was doing anything wrong. MSR Presents The 2015 District 37

Big 6 Grand Prix Series Last three Rounds On the Way

M

SR Presents the 2015 District 37 Big 6 Grand Prix Series, and eight rounds of competition are now over the half way point. After completing the fifth round in Primm, Nevada the first weekend of May, the Big 6 Series started the summer break. We are now preparing to resume the Big 6 GP on October 4th-5th with the Viewfinders Motorcycle Club (MC) hosting round six at the Desert Empire Fairgrounds in Ridgecrest, California. From there we head up to Quail Canyon in Gorman, California, October 31 and November 1 for round seven with the Prospectors MC throwing the party. Big 6 Racing's Mike Garvin, has confirmed that the eighth and final round will be at Lake Elsinore, California, on December fifth and sixth, as the Vikings MC host their traditional last round to close out the series. The premier class of Big 6, the West Coast Grand Prix Pro, watched Colton Udall enter into the series at Glen Helen's round three. Where

he marched to his first 2015 Big 6 win, then went on since to win rounds four and five as well. However it is the lean mean Precision Concepts scrambler in Justin Seeds who sits first in the WCGP Pro points with a seventeen point lead over Udall. Udall has been running well as he keeps his well worn Honda CRF450X racing fast with plenty of tender loving care and sits second in WCGP Pro points. Ryan Reina has improved with a fourth at round four and backing that up with a third at round three he is looking very strong, and we still have a lot of Justin Seeds is the West Coast Grand Prix Pro points leader as we race into round six

racing yet. Reina is third in points. Blayne Thompson has had a second and third, but missed round five and is fourth in points with Mark Samuels locking up the top five in the WCGP Pro point standings. In the WCGP Pro II class, Dalton Shirey, set out fast for the points chase winning the first two rounds, but is not listed as racing in the next three rounds. In steps Trevor Stewart racing to a second at the Adelanto Grand Prix in round one, then came back at round three winning the Pro II and finishing third overall. Only the winning WCGP Pro Udall and second place Pro Seeds were faster. Also going about business is 3 Brothers racer Nick Stover. Stover has only missed the top three once, and with a WCGP Pro II victory in Primm, he is the WCGP Pro II points leader after round five, Stewart four points back in second. Rowan Trefz won in round four and followed that up with a third in Primm, he is seventeen points back of Stover in third. Racing in four rounds, Mitch Anderson has two thirds and a second, is now fourth in points and could be a factor if he keeps stepping on the box. Shirey is fifth in points despite not racing in the last three rounds. Stover also has a firm points lead in the 201-250cc Lightweight I Expert class. fter a hot summer break from Arizona short course, off road racing will be coming back to Wild Horse Pass Motorsports Park on the weekend of September 11th and 12th. The Lucas Oil Off Road Arizona Regional series will be hosting rounds 8 and 9. The race’s theme will honor and remember those who passed in the 9/11 attacks. Also in the program will be a ride-along in a race vehicle for some very special veterans. Come out and watch drivers from Arizona, California, and Nevada, if not other locations show off their driving skills. The Kart classes have several young teens that are aspiring, showing off their driving skills. Several of these drivers have been competing for the last couple of years. Also a great exciting class is the SR1 which has been given an exhibition show at several of the LOORRS National races. Also do not forget the other classes which are always packed with tons of dirt slinging action as the drivers make their way around the course. This will be an evening race on both nights. For more information check out Lucas Oil Off Road AZ Regional Racing page at www.lucasoilregionalaz.com.

ack in 1968 Don Rake and some friends decided to put on a motocross in Mammoth Lakes, California. They built a world-class track 8,000 feet up in the Sierra Nevada Mountain range. Dave McCoy came along and offered the backing of his Mammoth Mountain Ski Area and the rest is history. Every summer racers have flocked to Mammoth Mountain for this classic event. It is the oldest continuous running motocross in the USA. The track has changed a little over the years, but the fun hasn't. Many of the top racers in the world have honed their skills at this event. There have been some epic battles over the years and many racers have made a name for themselves on this track. Riders like Ricky Carmichael, Jeremy McGrath, Rick Johnson, Johnny O'Mara, Broc Glover, Donny Schmitt, Steve Lamson, Gary Jones, Kevin Windham, David Bailey, Jeff Ward, Ron Lechien, Bob Hannah, James Stewart, Mike Bell, Donny Hansen, Ryan Dungey, Ryan Villopoto, Eli Tomac and many more have raced Mammoth and moved on to giant success. It has become one of the major amateur events in the country as well. You can see the factory riders of tomorrow racing in the mini classes at Mammoth today. CALVMX/AHRMA Flat Track & Trials Weekend Camp Lockett Event and Equestrian Facility - August 1-2, 2015 - Campo, CA

I

t does not matter what the sport is, in order to survive and grow it must maintain and attract new membership. In the sport of vintage motorcycle racing, this is especially true. In the few short years he has been president of CALVMX, Frank Vrettas has made a tremendous effort to keep vintage motocross racing viable in Southern California. As he and the club see things, there are literally hundreds of suitable vintage machines stashed away in garages and sheds, forgotten by their owners. The goal of CALVMX and its national partner AHRMA is to get the machines back in action with their owners and to encourage the younger generations to give classic racing a chance and not just dismiss the machines from bygone eras as just so much scrap to be ignored. In an effort to increase the presence of vintage racing of all disciplines, CALVMX and AHRMA staged an introductory flat track and trials event at Camp Lockett Event and Equestrian Facility (CLEEF) in Campo, California. A designated historical facility, whose history includes being used by the Buffalo Calvary Soldiers, WW-2 German and Italian P.O.W’s, and a junior-senior high school, the venue proved to be the ideal location. Saturday’s event was an open format flat track race held on a short track styled course laid out within the main show horse area. The open format of the races featured machines ranging from 50cc minicycles, knobby tire MX bikes and dual sport machines on up to purpose built flat track machinery. Also featured in the program were the crowd-pleasing three wheelers and quads. Fourteen heat races were run in rapid succession followed by main events for each class. Excellent watering by track officials (Rudy Gil, Elliot Iverson, Eli Iverson, and Brian Bell from the Imperial Valley Flat Track group) kept traction good and dust minimal. Class winners included Randi Schaller (Yam) topping Powder Puff Novice, Penny Bridges and Pat Farmer finishing 1-2 in Powder Puff Beginner and Geoff Patrick (Tri) in Classic 250 Beginner. A crowd favorite winner was Rodney “Bubba” Schaller, the young son of fellow racers Randi and Bob Schaller. Suzuki mounted Bubba, having only recently removed his training wheels, rode smooth and consistent to take the under 12 Beginner class. Making a very impressive first-time showing was former factory motocross pro Scott “The Burner” Burnworth. Quickly adapting to having only a rear brake, Burnworth powered his way to three class wins on Ossa and Honda machines. One of the most impressive races on Saturday was the duel between Tanner Pies and Tom Decrescente in the Three Wheeler Expert division. Never more than two or three bike lengths apart, the two aces broadslid the corners almost completely sideways, throwing huge amounts of roost towards the spectators. Pies’ extreme body lean closely resembled that of a sidecar speedway passenger. At the finish, Pies

took the victory, followed by Descrescente, while Intermediate class entrant Mike Dunn topped his division. Sunday’s schedule featured more flat track, along with a ten-section trials course designed by Matt Parsons. The flat track portion featured entries by two motocross pioneers (and Baja winners), Bill Silverthorn and Gene Fetty. Aged 74 and 73, both showed fine form on the track with Silverthorn locked in close battle with racers 20 years younger. Even a spill exiting turn three and being bumped by a fellow rider did not slow Silverthorn as he took wins in 60+ Sportsman Expert, Open Knobby and a well earned second behind veteran flat tracker Steve Kukla in Open Super Senior Expert.

Fetty took welldeserved wins in Open Senior Intermediate and 60+ Sportsman Intermediate. In a flash back to the late 1960’s, rope starting minibikes took to the short track on Sunday. Featuring both home and factory built mounts, the Rodney “Bubba” Schaller Kathryn Caro Photo diminutive machines put on a great show. Class winners were Gar Wood in Novice, Ron Wood in Beginner and CALVMX President Frank Vrettas in Open Intermediate. Scott Burnworth showed his versatility on two wheels by entering his first observed trials event. Using a Keith Lynas supplied Ossa Mick Andrews Replica, “Burner” maneuvered his way thru the ten sections successfully to take the win in Modern Classic Novice, followed by Luke Sayer. In Modern Classic Expert, Rick Daniel (Yam) showed he can dominate a challenging trials course as well as he frequently does in vintage motocross competition. Ed Lowenberg tallied a second behind Daniel. For a first-time event, the two days of classic racing were an overwhelming success. Local residents turned out in healthy numbers and facility managers were highly impressed with the execution of the event. Tentative plans for a race series at the venue for 2016 are now in the works. Visit www.calvmx.net for more information.
