A rebuttal appeared in the next edition of the newspaper defending the interpretive program and suggesting that this type of education was necessary for the park to be sustainable in the future. “So what’s ‘sustainable’ all about?” author Samantha Smith writes. “While Many people concerned about the lawsuit to environmentalists say it means close portions of Ocotillo Wells SVRA to off conservation and careful use of the road use are under the mistaken belief that earth’s resources, it’s actually a conditioning environmental stranglehold on our sport and all of this came about in just the last two process, using environmental scares, designed our nation. years. To hear the talk of the sensitive areas we have to watch out for in off road areas you are given the distinct impression that there is hardly any land left untouched in the United States and that must be why all the fuss in off road areas. In fact nothing could be farther from the truth. “In 2002, the Heritage Foundation’s Dr. Ronald D. Utt examined the federal government’s land use surveys and concluded, ‘After nearly 400 years of unmanaged development and rabbit-like population growth, somewhere between 3.4 percent and 5.2 percent of land in the continental United States has been consumed . . .’” 6 In other words over 90% of our nation is undeveloped land. We’re constantly bombarded in this society with the phrase “fragile eco-system” which is one of the reasons we have to be “educated” about how to use our desert, but the lessons to be learned from the 1980 eruption of Mount St. Helens should put to rest the fragile theory. In just a few moments of time this natural catastrophe did more damage to hundreds of miles of forest surrounding that volcano than any damage every off road vehicle that has ever visited Ocotillo Wells in the last five decades could possibly do to the desert. “The rock-laden, ground-hugging steam blast advanced rapidly outward from the volcano in a 180° arc, flattening over 200 square miles of forest in less than ten minutes. The extent of biological destruction was staggering. The timber felled by the eruption would have been sufficient to build almost 500,000 three-bedroom houses. Virtually all the visible mosses, ferns, shrubs and wildflowers vanished. “Scientists who flocked to study the devastated area soon found that the initial pessimistic forecasts of long-term barrenness were largely unfounded. . . . . within just three years, 90% of the original plant species were found to be growing within the blast zone. “Mount St Helens demonstrates how quickly and completely recovery can occur in the natural world.”7 Park leaders call it environmental education. We call it social indoctrination. And it’s your OHV dollars at work. E

When environmentalists can’t control you through federal law or local ordinance they settle for “simply trying to condition you, and those around you, to believe you are engaging

in an act of severe personal transgression.”

Ivan Stewart Motorsports Has Completed their 185hp New 2015 RZR XP1000

I

van Stewart Special Edition Supercharged XP1000 is the first of many Ivan Stewart Special Edition RZR’s. This Supercharged RZR XP1000 was complete in time to be shown at the Mint 400 March 13, 2015. This will be one of many performance custom builds that Ivan Stewart Motorsports will be introducing. We can’t wait for the next one! We decided to go with a supercharger vs a turbo for many reasons and one main reason is reliability. Not only is a supercharger more reliable, a supercharger gives power throughout the whole power band of the motor where a turbo has what is called “turbo lag” at lower RPM. We feel that a supercharger fits the RZR application better than a turbo. On this build we partnered up with the best. For starters we went with the tire and wheel brand that won the UTV World Championship this year-GMZ’s 30" Kahuna’s and 14" Liteloc wheels. Because of the speed this RZR produces we didn’t want to out run the lights so we went with Baja Design’s 30" Radius Lights and two bumper mounted Squadron lights. To protect the driver and passenger, nothing says safety more than Cagewrx so we fitted it with their custom cage and bumper. For comfort we went with PRP Seats where they embroidered Ivan “Ironman” Stewart’s iconic signature and colors on them. For the deep throaty sound and to accommodate the unleashed horsepower of the supercharger we went with nothing but the best - Trinity Exhaust. To bring you back in time for the “Ironman’s” racing days Invision Powersports wrapped the RZR with Ivan’s racing colors, the infamous Red, Orange and Yellow. All Wheel Engineering threw their hat in on the build with a sway bar linkage with Ivan’s signature lasered on them. Ivan Stewart Motorsports is a Polaris dealership based out of San Diego CA that provides Polaris products to off road enthusiasts. Since their grand opening in October of 2014, Ivan Stewart Motorsports has taken pride in customer service and puts the customer needs first before the sale. At Ivan Stewart

Ivan Stewart Special Edition Supercharged Polaris RZR Motorsports employees do not work on commission so they sell only what the customer needs and not what they want them to buy. Ivan Stewart Motorsports does one thing and does it well and that is selling Polaris off road.

Idaho, hosted by the Boise Ridge Riders. The AMA has sent organized teams representing the United States to compete in the FIM ISDE since the 1960s, with individual riders competing in earlier years. SUMMER OF GLOVE

Malcolm Smith Racing Introduces MAX AIR Glove

F

lashback to the “Summer of Glove” — we’re not talking about hordes of hippies descending on Haight Ashbury here. In 1967 the legend of Malcolm Smith was forged in the blast furnace of the very first Baja 1000. Flash forward to the 2015 MSR (Malcolm Smith Racing) MAX AIR glove. “The MSR MAX AIR line is our lightest and most ventilated riding gear,” explains MSR Brand Manager Nick McBride. Excessive heat is not just uncomfortable, it is dangerous. Prolonged extreme heat degrades your physical and mental capabilities. “Stay cooler, longer, with MAX AIR.” A lightweight sublimated poly twill fabric on the back of the hand facilitates cooling and provides a non-restrictive feel, while a synthetic palm and reinforced thumb panel offer long term durability. “Gripper” silicone graphics on the finger tips provide for positive lever feel without inhibiting the tactile sensitivity needed for optimum control. “There really is a lot to love about this glove,” adds McBride. “Our ‘airprene’ cuffs prevent the glove from shifting around without feeling restrictive.

The MAX AIR glove is designed to work in conjunction with our MAX AIR pants and jerseys to create the optimal cooling effect that a rider needs in hotter weather.” McBride says this glove is a winner: “It not only lives up to Malcolm’s reputation for performance, it looks pretty ‘cool’ too.” MSR —The heart and soul of what makes a champion continue. Features & Benefits: • Embossed “airprene” cuff for stability and comfort in the most extreme conditions • Lightweight, sublimated poly twill fabric on the back of the hand for cooling and a non-restrictive feel • Durable Synthetic palm and reinforced thumb panel for added wear resistance and comfort • Gripper Silicone graphic on finger tips for positive lever feel and performance • Added Rubber pull tab on palm side cuff MAX AIR GLOVE: Retail: $29.95. T

he American Motorcyclist Association congratulates the two riders who locked up AMA Supercross championships in Houston on Saturday, April 11: Ryan Dungey, who won the 2015 AMA 450SX Championship, and Cooper Webb, who secured the 250SX West title. Dungey, who races for Red Bull KTM Factory Racing, finished second in Houston, earning enough points to ensure he’ll end the season with the championship. Star Racing Yamaha’s Webb finished first in the 250SX West class to claim his title. “The 2015 season is another great year for AMA Supercross,” said AMA President and CEO Rob Dingman. “Ryan and Cooper were stellar against the world’s best to confidently earn their AMA No. 1 plates. Congratulations on a great performance.” This is the second AMA Supercross premier-class championship for Dungey, who also won the title in 2010. Dungey, from Tallahassee, Fla., displayed remarkable consistency in 2015 with six wins through the Houston round. He finished off the podium only once, at the season opener in Anaheim. Webb, from Newport, N.C., had five wins, a second and a seventh through Houston. This was Webb’s first AMA Supercross title. In 2014, Webb finished the season fifth in the 250SX West class and won the 2014 Monster Energy AMA Supercross Rookie of the Year Award. Three rounds remain in the 2015 AMA Supercross season, with the 250SX East title still undecided. The End of Green Jobs Posted December 26, 2014

T

he Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) issued its last green jobs report in 2011. Did this mean the end of green jobs? Obviously not, but it did put an end to unjustified manipulation of reporting on the number of green jobs being created. Green job creation is the benefit recited ad nauseam by politicians promoting clean energy. Unfortunately, green job creation isn’t what it was claimed to be. The report by Spanish economist Gabriel Calzada Álvarez PhD, of the University Juan Carlos, established that 2.2 traditional jobs were lost for every green job created. The report was attacked by those promoting clean energy, and the concept of green jobs remains a talking point of politicians promoting clean energy. What’s more damning, however, were the BLS reports on green jobs and how jobs were categorized as green. The revelation of which jobs were green, during Congressional testimony, raised a few eyebrows, to say the least.

In March 2013, the BLS, reported that jobs associated with green goods and services in 2011 amounted to 3.4 million jobs, an increase of 158,000 green jobs over the prior year. BLS, under questioning, admitted it had a broad definition of what constituted a green job. It amounted to defining a green job as a job in any capacity, no matter how remotely associated with clean energy, in any facility that could be described as green. • If a person swept the floor in a solar-panel facility, it would be counted as a green job. • If a person drove a hybrid bus in a city transportation department, it would be counted as a green job.

• If a person worked in a bicycle shop, it would be counted as a green job. • If a person sold recycled goods at the Salvation Army, it would be counted as a green job. • If a person collected garbage, it would be counted as a green job. While collecting garbage is a hard job, for which people don’t get much credit, they can hardly be described as being green. They certainly can’t be remotely associated with clean energy, unless the trash is burned in a power plant, and even that is a stretch. The person driving a hybrid school bus is doing a commendable job for the community, but the job is hardly green because the bus is a hybrid. It wasn’t mentioned in the testimony, but taxi cab drivers using hybrids, such as a Prius, could also be

classified as green using the BLS model. The concept of green jobs is fictitious from the outset. Fundamentally, the job is green if it’s not associated with fossil fuels. But the greenest jobs of all are not seen as being green. Forest rangers, farmers, marine biologists, landscapers, fishermen and linemen who work outdoors, mostly with their hands, and who are often involved with promoting and protecting the environment, are not seen as being green. Green jobs really aren’t about the environment, they are about politics and CO2 emissions. It’s good the BLS stopped issuing the green jobs report. Now, if we could just get politicians to stop talking about fictitious green jobs. Read more of Donn’s pieces at his blog, Power for USA www.dddusmma.wordpress.com/ E

ip #15 Roof A/C Units Keep your filters clean! Dirty filters will result in freeze up and cause the unit to overwork and run hot and may shut down the unit altogether and trip your circuit breaker. Have your A/C unit serviced and cleaned at least once a year. Silica sand is a powder that can cause havoc with your A/C coils. You see it all the time on your tables and counter tops, this stuff is very abrasive and it can destroy seals and wheel bearings. Tip #16 Awnings Your worst enemy is without a doubt the “Devil Winds” gusts and twisters that reach 25 to 60 mph. They cause one of the major payouts of insurance companies. The second is the road warrior that unfurls your awning while you are traveling at 40 to 70 mph. Both of these scenarios can cost you a load of money. The damage from these range from frame and roof damage to replacement of vents, a/c units, satellite, antenna systems and window replacement. Think about the damage to a neighbor’s RV or while driving down the road your awning going thru a car or truck windshield or worse! Good tie-down systems are readily available at a good RV service center with knowledgeable people. A simple Tie-Down System is as follows: four screw anchors, 100 ft of half-inch nylon rope, 4 to 6 Texas tacks. Criss-Cross the rope over the entire awning, that also includes the tension bar on each end. Attach rope to screw anchors using a loop cinch at each corner, drive the Texas tacks at a slight angle thru the holes in the foot pads then go have fun. For traveling, attach cinch straps every four feet along the length of the awning and add a couple to the awning arms for extra measure, then you are good to go! Deflapper kits are also available, but don’t just rely on them to save your awning! Tip #17 More About Your Awning When you set up your awning make sure you first adjust your height, a drop of about 2 to 3 inches should be sufficient. Secondly you want to drop one corner of

12 S&S OFF ROAD MAGAZINE - MAY 2015 - www.SS-OffRoadMagazine.com

your awning about two inches. This will allow water to run off instead of building up in the middle and causing a major collapse and awning replacement! Tip #18 Water Hoses Are Important Only purchase hoses that are meant for drinking purposes, regular garden type hoses will emit bad smells, taste and toxins when heated by higher temperatures and could make you ill. Tip #19 Water Heaters There are two basic water heater materials and sizes: aluminum and steel tanks, 6 Gal and 10 Gal but that is where the similarity stops. The different types then include: Gas Manuel light, Gas and Electric 110 volt. Other options include electronic ignition, electronic temperature control, automatic and automatic re-ignitor systems added as after market items. All these things can be confusing especially when you are a do it yourself repairman. Always refer to the service manual. Most water heaters break down because of poor maintenance so always check the safety valve and your air gas mixture control. Black soot on the side of your RV indicates wrong air gas mixture. If the safety valve pressure/ pop off drips then replace it! A combination of water pressure and high heat will set it off especially if you have a bad water regulator. It can short out the electronic circuit boards and this will cost you! Not getting gas or having back fire blow outs? Check the gas orifice or heat exchanger for blockage. If you have a plugged orifice use compressed air or a toothpick to dislodge dirt or tiny critters who decided to make a home there. If that doesn’t work you may have a bad gas valve. Note: If you replace your own electronics be advised that any or all warranty on the parts are void unless you are a certified technician by the factory who manufactures your water heater! Once you purchase an electronic part it is not refundable! RV Corner is provided as a courtesy of County RV in Santee CA. It is not uncommon to talk with someone several counties away. Before going on the air, make sure you have your ham radio license. You can get by with the Technician class license. Exams cover a host of topics, including rules and regs, radio theory, operating procedures and more. The ARRL and W5YI-VEC (www.w5yi.org) offer study guides. • Dual band feature (2 m / 70 cm) access any repeaters as you travel regardless if they are 2 meter or 70 centimeters. • High output wattage - nice to have extra power to reach a remote repeater. There seems to be a tradeoff between power and dual band. Most single band 2 meter radios have more output power. • Large memory capability - pre plan the repeaters for a long expedition and have room to store them all • Easy to read display - size, contrast, back light, for driving safety and ease of use • Removable control head - increases mounting options in the vehicle. The bulk of the radio can go under a seat or in the trunk. • Sealed radio - the cooling fan should not pull air (and, therefore dust) through the radio. • NOAA weather alert - important to keep an eye on the weather when off road. • Cross band repeater function - see above • Ease of use. This is a bit relative. Today’s radios have so many functions, they can be challenging to program the first time. Another reason to get yourself a mentor (known as an Elmer). You may like other features; this is just a start. And I should mention that ham radio isn’t restricted to off-road use. Heck, you’re welcome to operate wherever and whenever. In fact, put your ham radio skills and driving skills to use by helping out in a charity ride. You’ll have fun, polish your operating skills, and help a worthy cause. Incorporating ham radio equipment into your 4WD vehicle adds a new dimension to your communication capabilities. It is very useful for routine operating, and could make a big difference during an emergency in a remote area. E

Whiplash: More than Standard Neck Pain By Dr. Amanda Donohue and Dr. Gary De Forest

W

hiplash, a soft tissue injury to the neck, is also called neck sprain or neck strain. It is characterized by a collection of symptoms that occur following damage to the neck, usually because of sudden extension and flexion,” according to the National Institutes of Health.1 This injury can also happen with a whip side to side, not just back to front. Approximately two-thirds of people involved in motor vehicle accidents develop symptoms of whiplash. The symptoms usually do not develop until two to 48 hours after the injury. Whiplash can also occur from falls, sports injuries, work injuries and other incidents. I see whiplash in motocross and other off road folks when they land very hard, even without crashing! Patients with whiplash injury may complain of pain and stiffness in the neck, extending into the shoulders and arms, upper back and even the upper chest. Two-thirds of patients suffer with headaches, especially at the base of the skull. Patients may also experience dizziness, difficulty swallowing, nausea and even blurred vision after injury, but these symptoms tend to resolve quickly. If they persist, evaluation by a neurologist would be best to check for post traumatic concussion issues. According to Marshall, 45 percent to 85 percent of people who suffer a whiplash injury have the symptoms five years after the accident, and 82 percent had a straightening or reversal of their cervical curvature.2 “Many authors regard a straightening or reversal of the normally lordotic, (forward) curvature to be one of the most significant changes of a whiplash injury.” 3 (See the pictures provided.) “The initial injury is due to damage of cervical muscles, ligaments, disks, blood vessels and nerves. The actual injury to soft tissues happens so rapidly that normal protective muscle reflexes cannot respond in time to decrease or prevent the injury,” according to a 2006 case report in the Journal of the American Chiropractic Association.3.You really just do not get a chance to brace or guard, as it whips the neck quickly. Racing neck braces or supports, can help reduce this but are not a cure-all nor will they prevent all injuries. The Diagnosis To diagnose whiplash, a DC (Doctor of Chiropractic) must first take a thorough history of the injury and the patient’s

previous medical history. Pre-existing conditions, such as arthritis, may increase the severity of the whiplash. The DC should give the patient an in-depth physical examination with concentration on the neuromusculoskeletal system (nerves, muscles and bones). Similar to asking about whiplash injuries from motor vehicle accidents, DCs should ask the patient questions that reveal the details of a sportsrelated incident. DCs must ask patients with Normal vehicular accident injuries, “Where was the impact from? Were you moving at the time? Did you have a seat belt Phase I on? What type of seat belt? Were you braced for impact? Did you hit anything in the vehicle?” says Dr. Alan Sokoloff, team Phase II chiropractor for the Baltimore Ravens. “You have to do the same for sportrelated neck injuries, too,” he says. Dr. Sokoloff Phase III explains that he “encounters doctors that say, ‘I do not treat sports injuries,’ but if you are treating injuries from auto accidents and really dig into the mechanism of the injury with all of its details, it’s pretty much the same.” Advanced Imaging In some cases, advanced imaging may be necessary to make a proper diagnosis. A cervical CT scan is ordered if a DC suspects cervical spine trauma, such as a vertebral fracture, if the patient complains of paresthesia (numbness, tingling, burning sensations) of the hands, if the patient is unconscious or has severe pain together with neurological deficits, explains Jerrold Simon, DC, president of the ACA Rehab Council. “A cervical MRI is ordered when the whiplash patient complains of neck pain with radicular symptoms, such as a

tingling sensation radiating down the arms or if there is suspected cervical spine trauma and the clinical findings suggest ligamentous (holds bone to bone) damage. A cervical MRI may be ordered as a follow-up to normal cervical CT scan if the above symptoms are present,” says Dr. Simon. This also will let the doctor see the soft tissue shock absorbing discs between the bony vertebrae. These discs can bulge out, like a weak spot on an inner tube, putting pressure on the adjacent nerves. Treatment In treating whiplash injury, patients should be reminded to stay active, unless immobilization is necessary due to serious

injury. “A cervical foam collar may be needed during the first few days following the incident if the cervical trauma is severe. However, in general, cervical collars are not recommended,” says Dr. Simon. Immediately after the whiplash injury, Dr. Simon applies an ice compress to the posterior para-cervical spine musculature for about 10 minutes on a periodic basis. Ice compresses are generally only used for the first 48 hours after an injury.4 In addition, chiropractic care is beneficial. A retroactive study by Woodward et al. published in Injury demonstrated that chiropractic treatment benefited 26 of 28 patients suffering from chronic whiplash syndrome.5 Chiropractic care in this study included spinal

manipulation, proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation stretching and cryotherapy [ice-pack therapy]. A neck adjustment works to improve the mobility of the spine to increase range of motion, while also enhancing movement of the adjoining muscles. This will eventually eliminate pain, soreness and stiffness and allow a patient to painlessly turn and tilt the head. In addition to adjustments, a treatment plan of mobilization, massage or rehabilitative exercises may speed up the recovery process. “Cervical rehabilitation procedures should be considered after the initial pain and inflammation have substantially subsided,” says Dr. Simon. “Then a functional capacity evaluation with focal attention to the cervical spine should be performed to assess the magnitude and degree of upper spinal functional deficiency.” Following this test, a DC can decide if the patient should receive a treatment of isometric cervical flexion, extension and lateral flexion against resistance exercises, a proprioceptive rocker board that works the sensory nerves for balance and position sense, a wobble board and/or gym ball exercises and vibration therapy. These tools can help you regain balance and agility after an injury. “Every person is different, and everyone’s ability to heal is different, so how we treat patients is very individualized,” says Dr. Sokoloff. “We will use modalities (like ultrasound and electrical stimulation) initially, if indicated. We will use soft-tissue techniques, if indicated. We will usually use a chiropractic adjustment, if indicated. But the one procedure we always use is progressive rehabilitative exercises, in office and home recommendations.” Home recommendations include proper computer and phone ergonomics, range-of-motion exercises and icing, to name a few. “Treatment plans that do not hold the patient responsible for helping themselves cheat everyone,” says Dr. Sokoloff. “The more a patient is informed about home icing instructions, home exercise and activity of daily living modifications, the better the outcomes are for everyone.” Footnotes: 1. www.ninds.nih.gov/disorders/whiplash/ whiplash.htm 2. My wife Racine Rogers is the BEST mom ever. She loves to ride our Polaris 900 XP with our youngest rider Miss Sadie. Racine does all the planning for our desert trips including the shopping, organizing our gear, and bringing one extra of everything. Thank you MOM for all you do! We love you! — Chris Rogers, Palm Springs CA I’m Audrey Byrd, age 55. I have been off roading in one way or another all my life. My passion for Jeeps was a long time dream which turned into a reality in 2010 when I bought my current 2010 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon. Because of my growing up off-road, it became a way of life for not only myself but my sons as well. They had all the various toys growing up and still do today. They raced all types of ATV’s and dirt bike races on closed coursed to Best in the Desert open desert racing. I was and still am the mom that encouraged them to ride faster and harder the next time and always taught them that it isn’t about winning but about having fun that counts. — Audrey Byrd, Henderson NV

We love being able to get the families together and get out in the fresh air and build memories! I have set up a small group on Facebook called Off-Roadin Peeps where we share events and news. My 14 year old daughter has picked up on our love for off roading and I must say she’s learning very quickly! My name is Sherri McCluskey and I am an Off Road Mom with two sons! I live in beautiful Mountain Home, Idaho and have been wheeling my entire life. I’ve had my rig, a 1979 Jeep Wagoneer, for 4 years. I wheel it for leisurely fun and in competitions: Idaho Tuff Truck Challenge and Canada’s version of TTC: Hard Grass Havoc. I also have a 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee that is my daily driver, but has a few mods “Wheelers For The Wounded” weekend on the Rubicon Trail, Ryan Rosario (far right) and his off road for the rough forest roads up in the mountains. mom, Stacie Albright enjoy the day on the trail with some volunteers and drivers from the event. This is my mom. She taught me the importance of wearing a helmet. I remember I was 10 years old back in 1981 at Saddleback Park right before it closed. She wouldn’t let me ride the whole day for firing up my CR80 and rippin’ it up the main road without gear on. Now I wear full gear head to toe and it has saved my life a few times. — Kevin Broadway, Chula Vista CA

o. 41 Trick Truck driver Justin Lofton took the overall win in the 2015 Polaris RZR Mint 400, presented by General Tire. “It’s pretty amazing,” Lofton said. “We set our sites on doing this and here we are.” Tracking issues had fans uncertain who would be first across the finish line until Lofton, in his brand new Jimco truck, cleared the Red Bull Jump at the race’s end.“We had a cleaner run than a lot of people had,” he said. “This truck is fast. This is (just) the second race for the truck. We were leading the Parker 425 before we had issues.” Lofton was followed across the finish line by Robby Gordon in the No. 77 Trick Truck.“We just ended up a little short here today,” Gordon said. “The truck ran flawlessly all day long.” Gordon lost time on a tire change when the crew rounded off a couple of lug nuts. The afternoon Unlimited race was stopped for about an hour following a multi-vehicle accident near RM32 that sent two racers to the hospital. The racers, whose names were not released, were taken to a local hospital and vehicles were removed from the course before racing resumed at 4:45 p.m. “The safety of our racers is paramount,” said Mint 400 CEO Matt Martelli. “Best In The Desert officials stopped the race immediately upon learning of the accident and only resumed after the injured were transported and the vehicles removed from the course.” Sam Berri took top honors in the 1500 Class on unofficial time, driving the brand new Jimco Class 1.“This is for everyone involved in building the car.” I’m out here to give these youngun’s a run for their money,” said the 62year-old. Known as “The Greatest Off-Road Race in America,” The Mint 400 is an epic four hundred mile battle between the top off-road racers in the world in over twenty different classes of off-road vehicles. The race was started in 1967, and is steeped in American lore, as thousands of racers, as well as celebrities from around the world, have attempted to tame the brutal Nevada desert. An entire week of events led up to the famed off-road race in and around Las Vegas, including a vehicle parade, drivers meet and greet, pit crew contest, crowning of Miss Mint, multiple parties, qualifying, and contingency/vehicle tech inspection. Annual San Jose Indoor is the start of a new season of racing and to others still it is a day of reminiscing about their racing history that perhaps included riding the San Jose Indoor in years gone by. Whatever the reason they were there, the excitement could be felt throughout the inside pits and the outside parking lot. It was an electric vibe in the air! Adding to the enjoyment of the day, the Clubman’s All British bike show and swap meet was taking place in the building next door. Jammed full of British motorcycles and parts the show also included legends and was filled with enthusiasts enjoying it all. Dick Mann was on hand to meet and greet along with Eddie Mulder and several others sharing their stories. Attendees were coming and going with their boxes and wagons filled with the finds of the day from the swap meet: motors, sprockets and other treasured parts. Immaculate bikes were proudly displayed competing for ribbons designating them as top competitors in their respective classes. Each year the San Jose Indoor adds a different level of excitement with something new. This year two classes raced for the first time on the concrete, an electric bike class and a knobby class. Classes are added when five or more riders register to race. The electric class included two heats of five riders and although you could hear the squeal of the tires on the track and the clanking metal when they bumped one another this race was silent. alifornia Gold Cup has reached the end of the road for their 17th Annual five round series. The fifth and final round was gated up at Glen Helen Raceway for the second time of the series, the tour also went to Perris Raceway for a double dose of racing the historic track. Time to put the glue to the envelope and send this final wrap of the 2015 series to the printers as we delve into a few of the series standouts. Carter Cooper put on his armor preparing for a duel with series nemesis Kade Johnson in the Pee-Wee (PW 7-8), racing for the traditional double points of the series finale. Cooper went to work in moto one ten points to the rear of Johnson for the series title. To capture the crown a win would be beneficial and a little help from Johnson to place no better than third. In moto one Johnson poured vinegar on Cooper's hopes sticking the moto win over Cooper who pushed hard but was unable to out do Johnson and settled for second in moto. When dealing with machines one never knows what will happen next, and moto two it was Johnson feeling the pain of an equipment failure finishing back in eighth. Cooper did the best he could for his cause, caging the moto victory and scoring 2-1 for the overall. Cooper grabbed the fifty points for the win and the series title in the last moto and last race of the series for the class. Johnson (1-8) ended up fourth overall slipping back in the final count to second place, just six points behind the the 2015 PW (7-8) Champion, Cooper. Johnson, a multiple Amateur National Champion at seven years old started his racing at Rocky Mountain Raceway in his home state of Utah. The Storm Racing/6 D Helmets racer, reportedly gave up Halloween festivities one year to race, and at that point his parents figured out they had a core motocrosser on their hands. The son of parents with multiple college degrees, he knows that Pro racing is in his future if he continues to gather top placing results at major events, but so will a college education as his parents emphasize education first before racing. Racing in all five rounds of the series, Johnson won three of five rounds for the 65 (6-8) title, echoing the effort in the PW Open (Thru 9) for his second 2015 Gold Cup title. He also finished up second in the 65 Open amongst the older racers. He showed how much he cottoned to racing at Milestone in round three, particularly the technical sections. This may bode well for him as his career advances to the highly technical discipline of Supercross. Johnson will be riding the Amateur National circuit for the rest of 2015, and hitting the books of course. Motocrossgiant.com/Dunlop/Panicrev.org racer Taylor Giorgio, raced to her first California Gold Cup after a few seasons of chasing the top spot. She finished the series on the podium at every round but did point out she wished her closest competitor, Shannon Edwards, was on the gate for the final two

Marshalling her Honda CRF250R to the top of the box, Giorgio conveyed that she felt good and healthy in the series, and that her skills have improved in the course of the five rounds. Her plans are to race in the upcoming Mammoth race in June, selected Trans World MX rounds, and the Triple

seventeen year old Spaniard finished on top of the 2015 Gold Cup 450 Intermediate points winning four of five rounds for the title. His third in the 450 4-Stroke Open at this round was his only blemish in the class, as he won rounds one through four and with the third in this round he easily took his second Cup title. The teen is currently racing in the states to improve his skills and is reaching for an American Motorcyclist Association Pro license while he is at it. He would like to thank Race Tech, Motorex, FMF, AXO, Twin Air and all his supporters as the former factory Spanish Honda 85cc racer shoots for the stars. Time to shine the spotlight on some of the other stand out performances of the series. Maddox Jarvis won the last three rounds for the 65 (9-11) title. Winning rounds three and four, he found the cherry on the cake for his second title, the 65 Open. Cole Cook doubled up with series titles in the 85 (Thru 11) and 85/ 150 Open. Ethan Cook, won the last three rounds in both the 85/150 (12-13), and Supermini (Thru 13) for a double scoop of Gold Cup titles. VINTAGE MOTOCROSS CALVMX/DUNCAN RACING Second Annual Three Wheeler National March 14-15, 2015 - Cahuilla Creek MX Park, Anza CA By Steve Caro - Photos by Kathryn Caro Tanner Pies

T

he Cahuilla Creek MX Park Vet track played host to classic racing on both two and three wheels over the weekend of March 14-15. On Saturday, it was a virtual time warp to the 1980’s as three-wheelers of all shapes, sizes and colors (including a bright pink example) took to the track with their second annual national event hosted by regional vintage motocross powerhouse CALVMX and event supporter Duncan Racing. Although pushed to the background in the ensuing decades by legislation and the rising popularity of quads, a core contingent of die-hard “wheelers” continued to ride and race their machines when and wherever possible. The Open Expert machines led off the day, with an extra incentive for the first moto. BTD Motorsports posted a $100 gift certificate for the winner of the holeshot. Cashing in on a perfectly timed gate, David Ham (Hon) took the prize and led the pack into the back straight. CALVMX regular Tom Decrescente (Hon) was in hot pursuit of Ham and executed a perfect Tom Decrescente pass on the back half of the course. Behind him, John Brady (Hon) slid his way into second, with Ham holding onto third. Decresente kept up a torrid pace throughout the moto with perfectly controlled power slides marking his pace. Brady

remained in second and never backed off his pace as he slowly reeled in Decrescente. As the pair rounded the final corner to the checkers, Brady found the opening he was looking for and took the lead just as the checkers flew. Decrescente took second, with Ham in third. Unfortunately Brady was a non-starter in the second moto. Timing the gate perfectly, Decrescente blasted up the starting hill and proceeded to absolutely dominate the moto. His closest challenger was Tanner Pies (Hon), who kept Descrescente in range as the two powered around the track at a pace that easily rivaled that of the two-wheel racers. At the checkers, it was Descrescente with the overall, followed by Pies and Ham. Vintage 241-310cc Expert action saw the always formidable Tanner Pies (Hon) trade moto wins with Paul Proctor. The two were never more than a few lengths apart in both motos as

they threw their powerful trikes from side-toside as they circulated the course. The final results saw Pies topping the field, followed by Proctor (Hon) and Bryan Ditch (Hon). On Sunday, round three of the CALVMX/100% 2015 season returned to Cahuilla Creek in more typical weather conditions than the Artic like situation they faced in February. Continuing club tradition, long time lady racer Lori Payne was saluted for her four plus decades in the sport. The sister of inaugural U.S. Women’s Motocross Champion, Nancy Payne, Lori is a regular competitor in both women’s and the regular classes at the monthly CALVMX events. The weekend was extra special for her as she celebrated her birthday with family members present and participated in the special Marty Smith motocross clinic on Saturday “My best birthday ever” she was heard to exclaim in the pit area. 50 Plus GP Experts featured a dominant performance by Maico mounted Brad Morrison who led every lap of both motos with considerable style.

Lori Payne

Moto one saw Morrison blitz the starting hill with the distinctive low-throated bark sound of his German mount echoing off the nearby hills. Entering the main portion of the Cahuilla course, Morrison was trailed by Ron Ratigan (Hon), Ed Tashjian (Suz) and Carman Cafro (Suz). Morrison maintained a torrid pace throughout the moto and by the white flag had around a ten second lead. Behind him, Ratigan put some distance between himself and the duel for third between Tashjian and Cafro. Morrison crossed the finish line uncontested for the victory, with Ratigan second and Cafro emerging with third place over Tashjian. Morrison’s Maico never faltered in moto two as he repeated his first moto holeshot and led the pack into the back half of the course. Ratigan once again locked into second, with Honda mounted Brad Roysdon and Tashjian vying for third. Morrison’s classic Teutonic steed never faltered and he sped to an easy moto and overall victory. Ratigan’s consistency netted him second overall, while Roysdon captured the final podium spot with his 5-3 moto scores. For several seasons the Vintage Sportsman 250 class has been the standard bearer for the original concept of vintage racing; the preservation and use of the short travel pre-1975 machines. In the Intermediate division, Travis McCaw swept both motos on his way to the overall aboard his wellprepped Honda Elsinore. In the first moto, McCaw powered his way into the lead as the pack headed for the back section of the course. Trailing him was Suzuki mounted David Perrpperato and Jim Barker (Hon). By the end of the second lap, McCaw had done the classic “check out” on the rest of the pack as he built up a multi-second lead. Barker moved into second, with Tim McIntyre (CZ) third. McCaw was never challenged for the lead, and in fact his pace was such that he had moved to within striking distance of the Expert ranked racers who were on the track at the same time. Behind him John Woolsey (Yam) staged a late race charge and passed into second, followed by Barker. At the finish of the moto, McCaw took an easy win, with Woolsey and Barker second and third. Only five laps separated McCaw from the overall victory as the riders staged for the second moto. At the drop of the gate, Woolsey made things interesting by taking the lead exiting the starting area and led the pack thru the first part of the course. McCaw was close behind in second with Barker and McIntyre shadowing him. McCaw moved into the lead by the end of lap three and proceeded to lead unchallenged for the rest of the moto on his way to a sweep of the class and another overall win. Barker gave Honda a 1-2 sweep, as he took second, followed by McIntyre with the final podium spot. E
