Sudan 1962-1965

This book is a digital rendering of a photo album that I made during my three years of summers and Christmas vacations in Khartoum, Sudan, from 1962-1965. Susan Rountree Hanes copyright 2011

Sudan 1962-1965 In 1962, my father, William M. Rountree, was appointed U.S. Ambassador to the Sudan by President John F. Kennedy. I accompanied my parents to Khartoum when they arrived in July, staying until September, when I left for boarding school in Washington, D. C. For the next three years, I came back to Sudan for Christmas and for the long summer vacations. During my visits home, I traveled with my parents to southern Sudan, camped in the Sahara, and visited the sights of the capital. I socialized with the teenaged children of other Americans who were working there. In my memory, the summers were hot, carefree, and endless, and there were lots of parties and activities at the “Rec.” The photos in this book are from a small album that I made during my visits home. --Susan Rountree Hanes, 2011

Tribal Dancing I accompanied my parents on a tour of southern Sudan. When our plane, a DC-3, landed at several places, we were treated to performnces by local tribal dancers. Notice that the women were decked out in brand new Maidenform bras for the occasion.
