Editor's note: For over 7 years, "Be My Pen Pal" has been a popular and regular feature in Jabberblabber Magazine. Children from all over the Mid-South write letters to Jabberblabber on a regular basis. Our purpose is to improve letter-writing skills as well as promote the use of language, sentence structure, penmanship and postal practices of the US Mail. When Jabberblabber receives your mail, he reads each one aloud to his team. Then, they handwrite letters back to each child and include a nice shiny sticker! Here are just a few of the many letters he receives on a daily basis:

Dear Jabberblabber, It's me, Emily! Sorry I haven't written to you in a while; I've been really busy lately. Yesterday, I celebrated my birthday at Incredible Pizza, which is where I got this magazine. I still love being green. I even named a new bird friend after you. My best New Year's resolution is to save the animals of the world. Sincerely, Emily Fraier, age 12, Oakland, TN Dear Jabberblabber, It is me, Cortez Ferrell again. I was trying to ask you if I may join the Be Green Like Me Club? I pledge to respect the earth and all of its creatures every day by practicing the 10 ways to be green like you. Sincerely, Cortez Ferrell, age 11, Memphis, TN

Dear Jabberblabber, I have been going to your birthday party for 3 years! But this year, I couldn't come because my mom and I visited St. Louis. Also, I LOVE being green! I always try to. The Sun!

Many people believe that the temperatures are hotter in the summer because the Earth is closer to the sun and farther from the sun in winter. This is untrue! In fact, the Earth is farthest from the sun in July and is closest to the sun in January! Because of the sun's tilt during the summer, the sun's rays hit the Earth at a steep angle. The light does not spread out as much, thus increasing the amount of energy hitting any given spot. Also, the long daylight hours allow the Earth plenty of time to reach warm temperatures. During the winter, the sun's rays hit the Earth at a shallow angle. These rays are more spread out, which minimizes the amount of energy that hits any given spot. Also, the long nights and short days prevent the Earth from warming up. Thus, we have winter! Although, we should use sun protection year-round, it is easy to see why we must be diligent in the summer months. The sun isn't all bad. 10 to 20 minutes daily in the sun with sun screen should be enough to receive sun-based Vitamin D when paired with Vitamin D-rich foods such as fatty fish and enriched milk. Most importantly . . . have a fun, safe summer with lots of friends and activities. Color the fun drawing of the sun below. Use LOTS of color and your imagination to create a masterpiece!

Summer Chores

Summertime means a lot of free time and fun in the sun! However, all of that free time gives kids an opportunity to help their parents with household duties. To make summer chores more fun, an app is being developed in Memphis right now. Homey is available on Android and iOS --- it makes chores fun for the kids with a reward system and helps parents organize everyone’s work.

Here are 5 chores that kids can do outside and receive extra points this summer:

1. Water the plants: Grab a hose and make sure all of the plants get enough water. It is better to avoid really hot weather when watering plants, so the best time for this chore is early in the morning or in the evening. 2. Mow the lawn: If kids already know how to handle the lawnmower, that is a nice weekly chore – but make sure they have adult supervision! You could also get help with sweeping the grass clippings after mowing. 3. Pull the weeds: It is really important to get rid of weeds so all of the plants in your lawn have enough room and nutrients to grow. You could even do it as a family!

4. Wash the car or bicycles: Washing the car and bikes can be a fun way to cool down during hot summer days.

5. Scrub the patio furniture: Outside furniture needs occasional cleaning. Give kids a sponge and a bucket and let them make it shine! Fun fact: Kids using Homey do 10 chores a week on average! www.homeyapp.net

JUNE TOPIC:

A SAFE SUMMER IN THE SUN By Gerard J. Billmeier, Jr., M.D.

As our primary source of Vitamin D, all of us need some sun exposure to help absorb calcium and build strong bones. But we can get the Vitamin D we need with short sun exposures without risking the side effects of skin damage, eye damage, immune system suppression and even cancer. Most children attain 50-80% of their lifetime sun exposure before age 18. As a parent, you can teach your child how to safely enjoy fun in the sun.

Sun Exposure Facts:

The sun’s light contains invisible ultraviolet (UV) rays which upon reaching our skin can result in tanning, burning and even cancerous changes. There are three forms of UV rays in sunlight:

1. UVA rays make up the majority of our sun exposure and are also present in tanning beds. A UVA tan does not protect us from further sun damage. 2. UVB rays can cause severe sunburns, cataracts (clouding of the eye lens), immune system damage and skin cancer. Melanoma, the most serious form of skin cancer, may occur from severe UVB sunburns occurring before the age of 20. 3. UVC rays are the most dangerous, but are blocked by the ozone layer and don’t reach the earth.

Sunburn

Signs and symptoms include: skin redness, pain, blistering, and in severe forms, headache, nausea, dizziness, chills and fever.

First Treatment: • Remove the child from sun immediately. • Place the child in a cool (not cold) shower or bath – or apply cool compresses as needed. • Give extra fluids for the next 48 hours. • Use moisturizing creams or aloe gel for comfort. Seek Emergency Medical Care If: • Painful blisters have formed. • Facial swelling occurs. • Large skin areas are involved. • Headache, chills or fever occur. • Signs of dehydration are present such as dry mouth and intense thirst.

Use Prevention: • Avoid children’s sun exposure between the peak sun hours of 10 AM and 4 PM. • Have your child wear protective clothing, sunglasses and a hat. • Apply sunscreen with UVA and UVB protection and a sun protection factor (SPF) of at least 15. • Apply sunscreen 15-30 minutes before exposure and reapply after swimming or sweating.

Heat Illness: Heat exhaustion starts slowly and can progress to heatstroke if not treated promptly. Heatstroke requires immediate emergency medical care and can be fatal.

Heat exhaustion signs and symptoms: • increased thirst • weakness and fainting • muscle cramps • nausea and vomiting • cool clammy skin • elevated body temp, but less than 105 F.

Heatstroke signs and symptoms: • severe headache and confusion • rapid breathing and heart rate • loss of consciousness leading to coma • seizures • hot, dry skin with absence of sweating • elevated body temp, 105 F or higher

Treatment: If the child shows signs of heatstroke, seek emergency medical care immediately. For heat exhaustion or while awaiting help for possible heatstroke, place the child indoors or in the shade and undress him. Use a cool bath or spray mist from a hose if outside. If the child is conscious and alert, give small sips of cool, clear liquids. All forms of heat-related illness should be evaluated at an Urgent Care Center or hospital-affiliated Emergency Department.

12

Prevention: • Teach children to always drink plenty of liquids before and during any activities in hot, sunny weather. • Have children wear loose fitting, light-colored clothing. • Avoid heavy exertional activity on the hottest days. • Teach kids to come indoors immediately when they feel overheated.

Teach Your Students How To Make Homemade Giant Bubbles What you'll need:

6 Cups Water (distilled is best but tap water is fine) 1/2 Cup Blue Dawn Dish Detergent 1/2 Cup Corn Starch 1 Tbsp Baking Powder (not baking soda) 1 Tbsp Glycerine 1 Large Pitcher or Bowl

HOW TO MAKE A BUBBLE WAND FOR YOUR HOMEMADE GIANT BUBBLES: Use two drinking straws, and a length of yarn that is 6 to 8 times longer than the length of one straw. Thread the yarn through the straws, tie a knot, and you’re good to go! Dip your homemade wand in the solution and wave it high in the air. Arms high and walking backwards works best! THE MORE BUBBLES YOU MAKE, THE BETTER THE MIXTURE GETS!

In a large pitcher or bowl, dissolve the cornstarch in the water, stirring thoroughly. Then gently stir in the remaining ingredients. Avoid creating a lot of froth. Allow your mixture to sit for at least an hour, stirring occasionally if you see the corn starch settling to the bottom.
