Carlson joined Idaho basketball as Director of Operations in 2012 after a successful four-year collegiate playing career and two years as a coach. His duties at Idaho will include team travel, player development, fundraising, film exchange, management of the team’s Readers as Leaders program and community involvement, as well as other administrative duties. DIRECTOR OF MBB OPERATIONS D Carlson came to Idaho from his alma mater, McLoughlin SECOND SEASON SE High School at Milton-Freewater, Ore., where he was head coach in 2011-12. He coached two all-league players and POINT LOMA NAZARENE, ‘09 P doubled the number of participants in the program in his one year with the team. 2009-10, In 2 009 9 10 1 he he was was aan n assistant coach at Walla Walla Community College, where he helped manage team travel, player development, fundraising and recruiting. The Warriors went 22-6 overall and 11-3 in the Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges (NWAACC) to claim the East Region title. An All-Golden State Athletic Conference (GSAC) selection in 2008-09, Carlson led the Sea Lions with 16.0 points and 7.7 rebounds. As a junior in 2007-08, he averaged 12 points and six rebounds per game. He started his career at WWCC, where he earned First-Team All-East Region honors as a freshman. As a sophomore in 2006-07, he led WWCC to a school-record 25 wins and an East Region title He was named the NWAACC Most Valuable Player after leading the league with a 23.4 scoring average on 66.1 percent shooting and 8.5 rebounds per game. Carlson is originally from Milton-Freewater, Ore. He was an all-league player at McLoughlin High School after averaging 24 points and 11 rebounds as a senior in 2005. He is a 2009 graduate of Point Loma Nazarene University with a bachelor’s degree in Sociology.

Toby van Amerongen joined Idaho in 2012 as assistant athletic trainer after a five-year stop at Montana from 200712. In his first season with the Vandals, van Amerongen will manage athletic training duties for men’s basketball, men’s and women’s tennis and men’s and women’s golf. He is a ten-year veteran of athletic training. In his five years at Montana, he was the primary athletic trainer for women’s ATHLETIC TRAINER A soccer, cheer squad and dance team, as well as a secondary SECOND SEASON SE trainer with football and men’s basketball. He was the head athletic trainer for two years at Blackburn College (Ill.) from ILLINOIS-CHICAGO, ‘01 IL 2005-07 and also spent one season at Millikin University TENNESSEE TECH, ‘04 T (Ill.) in 2004 as assistant athletic trainer with football, men’s basketball and baseball. Van Amerongen also served as an adjunct professor at each of his three previous stops. He addition has worked with Coast-to-Coast Athletics as an athletic trainer since 2005. The group organizes high school baseball showcases and arranges travel for all-star teams to national and international competitions. He is a certified athletic trainer and also holds an instructor certification from the American Heart Association. He is a 2001 graduate of Illinois-Chicago with a B.S. in Kinesiology. He earned his master’s degree in Instructional Leadership from Tennessee Tech in 2004. Van Amerongen is originally from Seattle, Wash. He was a four-year letter winner in gymnastics at UIC from 1997-00.

Jake Scharnhorst, who was an assistant at Idaho from 2003-2005, returned to Moscow as the head Strength and Conditioning coach for the Vandals in July 2009. Scharnhorst returned to Idaho after spending one season as the head Strength and Conditioning coach at Utah State and the previous year as an assistant at Mississippi. He was an assistant for the Vandals in 2004-05 and a graduate assistant in 2003-04. He earned his bachelor’s degree from the University of Northern Colorado in 2002 and his master’s from Idaho in 2005.
