Teachers help our growth in many ways: through instruction, correction, guidance— and especially through example. One teacher whose model we can all benefit from is Mr. John Francis Duffy. A St. Peter’s Prep gradaute, Mr. Duffy returned as a faculty member in 1928, with a Fordham University degree. For 45 years he has inspired stu dents and teachers alike, teaching Latin and English to all years as well as Geometry, his present discipline. Mr. Duffy travels daily from his home in Jamaica, N.Y., and rarely do we find him absent. He is a model teacher, parent, and Christian; so we of the 1974 PETREAN gratefully dedicate our efforts to Mr. John Francis Duffy.

ACTIVITIES W e grow to our fullest extent during our four years of high school. W e participate in activities for many reasons: diversion, delight, and definition—who we are, and what we will do with our experiences, skills and self-knowledge, the better to serve ourselves and others.

STUDENT COUNCIL

Standing L. to R.: A1 Castano, Vice President; Peter Colford, Publicity Committee Chairman; John T.M. Chester, School Spirit Chairman; Andrew Tyrrell, Secretary-Treasurer; Bart Erbach, Social Committee Chairman. Sitting; Kevin McCarthy, President.

This y e a r’s Student Council saw several old faces co n ta in in g new ideas. They initiated new ideas such as raffles to in c r e a s e th e m o n eta ry status of the Council, added a ticket service through the college for students wishing to go to concerts, plays, sporting events, etc. Not only w ere they concerned with this years workings, but also held an open house to draw eighth gra ders for the upcoming year. Thus, we can say this years Student Coun cil was a success.

PUBLICITY COMMITTEE

Peter Colford, Chairman of the Publicity Committee, along with a fine and dedicated staff, helped bring Prep closer to the outside world. The staff put seventeen bi weekly HIGH SCHOOL SETS in the JERSEY JOURNAL , while also publicizing all social events taking place at Prep.

Staff Members—John Bello, Mike Holt, Sam Polese, Andy Tyrrell, Bob Calvanico, A1 Castano, Kevin McCarthy, John Tyrrell, Bob Feeney, Bart Erbach, John Erhardt, John Chester, Jay Tavormina, Drew Salvest and Tom Forsythe.

L. to R.: G. Krol, P. Bonner, P. O’Donnel, G. Barry, B. Lorfink, J. Dobrowolski

The purpose of the Inscape is to al)ow the sttidenrtrody to see their liter ary works put in print. And if this is true, this year’s committee was success ful in their endeavor. Under the lead ership of George Barry and Jim Bracey and moderation of Mr. Richard Ken nedy, the staff put out its first issue on schedule and is planning its second.

SKI CLUB

\ The Ski Club is an extracurricular ac足 tivity more for enjoyment rather than for doing work. Aided by serveal good snow-falls, the club, moderated by Mr. Banach, traveled up to Vernon Valley, in Northern New Jersey. The only com足 plaint the members had was that they had to leave.

PETREAN

Editor-in-Chief—John Tyrrell

Associate Editor—Mike B. Holt

Art Editor—Tom Murphy

Sports and Activities Editor—Bob Calvanico

The 1974 PETREAN staff now knows what respon sibility means, and how to operate under pressure. Working day and night to meet its four deadlines, the editors and staff provided another commentary on the school year. W e hope this book will serve in the future as a source of enjoyment and memories of one year in the growth of St. Peter’s Prep.

E B O N Y

CLUB

This year a new club was formed here at Prep, The Ebony Club. The purpose of this club is to” get the students more interested and active in the school and to amend race relations between the students”. This club helps growth into self awareness and of others’ needs.

CHEERLEADERS

Captain Patty Jennings

The purpose of cheerleaders in schools is to build up and encourage support for the teams, and a fine example of spirit were the fourteen girls who rooted for Prep this year. They were always giving their support and encour足 agement whether we were winning or losing. Therefore, we thank the girls for their enthu足 siasm as well as concern for Prep.

KARATE The Karate team has been at Prep for seven years. It is a varsity sport; and members compete in sparring matches, both among themselves and with other schools. The club is a credit to discipline and hard work, and provides members self-satisfaction and self-defense.

In its second year of existence, the Prep Soccer Team proved to be a dominating force among Hudson County and Parochial schools. Under the leadership of head coaches Ron “Rock” Prezioso, Brother Tom Daly, S.J., and assistants Joe Gimma, and John Bender, the team became one of only ten parochials in New Jersey to qualify for the state Tournament. Finishing with an im pressive 8-10-1 record against some of the state’s best teams, St. Peters is being considered a seri ous contender for the County and State titles next year.

Kneeling in front, L. to R.: J. Vlahas, J. Bello, C. Parajon, P. Venetis, B. Lyberapolis, M. Collins, T. Ferry, D. DellaRosa. Middle Row, L. to R.: Brother Daly, S.J. A. Sambade, R. Cafiero, R. Terek, P. Driscoll, J. Callahan, H. Emporellis, Joe O’Gorman, T. Murphy, John O’Gorman, P. Callahan, P. Pasculli, Head Coach, “Rock” Prezioso. Back Row, L. to R.: J. Caldas, D. Kearney, B. Moran, B. Ginty, T . Gioia, T. Stachowiak, T. Muller, R. Oquendo, R. Bender, T. Petrizzio.

The Bowling Team, under coach W alter Illy, finished with a record of 9-3; nevertheless, the season was dissapointing since the team finished third in South Hudson. The team, however, had exciting moments. For example, there was the state record 693 rolled by Bobby Pfeiffer and the first, sec ond and third high game in the co u n ty : P f e if f e r ’s 2 6 8 , D ave Coar’s 255 and Bob Zulauf s 245. INDOOR TRACK

Mr. Maus, S.J. accepts games trophy from Fr. Miller. Opening faceoff between Prep’s Tony Aloi and Marist’s Rich Kroepper.

HOCKEY On Wednesday, February 27th, Prep initiated another sport, as they took on Marist in the first Hudson County Interscholastic High School Hockey game at Roosevelt Stadium. The team started practicing last year, at times of four and six in the morining since ice time is hard to get. The games started badly as Marist scored after fifty-eight seconds. Prep tied it up, but fell be hind as Marist scored on a penalty shot. From then on, Prep was in complete control, scoring four unanswered goals. Fine performances were given by Tony Aloi, Prep’s MVP, his brother Mike, who scored the hat trick, wingers Bob Lyberopoulos, Dave Parks and Mark Ellerson, goalie Ron Rand, and defensemen Frank Aquino, John Ellard and Mike Prokop. Prep reigns as the first County Hockey Champs.

* A new coach, new uniforms, and a new place as a pop ular spectator sport, marked the Wrestling Team s second year at Prep. It was a year of growth for the team, not really reflected in the 3-7 final standing. The 57-9 win over Hudson Catholic before a packed crowd avenged the three point edging they gave us in our first meet last year. In every category the team’s record surpasses last- year s and sets a mark to be passed again by next year’s returning veterans.

This year, Although they enjoyed an outstanding 5-1-1 record within the city, The Swim Team suffered a major disappointment in the Jersey City Championship. For the third year in a row, Prep came within twenty points of clinching the city title. This year, they were edged out by a well coached Ferris teapi, who they tied during regular season competition. The team, coached by Mr. Vincent Pickett, was lead by an outstanding Freestyle Department. City and county champ Joe Schirmer, Bill Bar ber, Tim “T im ort” Mortenson, Capt. Bob Feeney John Dobrolowski, Tom Forsythe, Paul Roses, and Tom “Huck” Flinn, all swam well during the season. The spirit was high all season long, but after winning its last five meets, the swimmers could say that this was the best swim team Prep has seen in years. •
