ion GAME DAYDedicat

SHARON DYKES passed away after a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease in November of 2010. She and Spike had three children, Rick, Bebe and Sonny, and spent their early years traveling across Texas while Spike coached high school football in various small towns including Coahoma, Eastland, San Angelo, Belton, Big Spring, Alice and Midland. Sharon bought and sold many homes and moved many times by herself with three children, dogs, cats and fish while Spike went ahead to coach football. She loved getting to know all of the players. She truly loved life and cherished friendships. The Dykes family settled in Lubbock in 1984 and became part of the Texas Tech football family, and remained there until Spike’s retirement from Texas Tech in 1999. Sharon loved traveling, gardening and the arts. She was a gentle and unselfish friend to all and will be remembered for her quiet strength of character. She was a devoted wife, mother and a true lady. This game is dedicated in loving memory of Sharon Dykes of behalf of the dykes family.

FORTENBERRY

#62

ROBERTSON SAYS: My family farms and ranches in Floyd and Hale counties. In 2008, we noticed changes in my husband, Sam. Changes such as decision making, forgetting appointments, and misplacing things. After numerous visits to doctors, phycologists, and neurologists and trying many pharmecuticals for depression and anxiety, in February 2012, our nightmare became reality and Sam was diagnosed with early-onset Alzheimer’s disease at the age of 57. Sam is now a resident in the memory care unit at Raider Ranch here in Lubbock. A once vibrant, youthful, up at dawn, hardworking man now knows hardly anyone or anything. Alzheimer’s disease has stolen our world and has ruined a wonderful husband, father, grand-father, son, and friend. All we have is the ability to advocate against this wicked disease. Thank you for being a part of our fundraising effort. Fun fact: I had to go to my kids for this one. They said what’s fun about me, is that I do surprising things like listen to Metallica (loudly) and I don’t mind staying out late with them. Sam and I married July 1, 1995 and together, we have four children: daughter Jennifer Golden and husband Chad Golden of Highland village and three grandchildren, Grayson, Grant and Laney Golden, Son Eddie Lee Fortenberry and wife Jessica Fortenberry of Abernathy, and Twin sons Grip and Trip Fortenberry of Lockney.

ROBERTSON SAYS: While being a busy mom of two sweet boys I am also the Director of Sales and Marketing for Raider Ranch. I play because I am around the disease every day, in our Memory Care Community, and see the devastation it causes. At the rate of diagnosis- I, or many people close to me will end up with Alzheimer’s and I want to fight for all of them while I can. There will be a cure one day and who knows- I may be helping raise money for a cure I may one day receive. One interesting fact is that I am an identical twin and we are five minutes apart.

I am playing BvB because I am all for any chance to combine friendly competition with a great cause. The work our local chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association does in our community is incredible. They give so much support to the family and friends of those diagnosed; it only makes sense to give support right back so they can keep up the good work. And hey, who doesn’t want to beat those brunettes? (Kidding!) I keep a Sharpie in my hand or at least nearby during every newscast. It’s a comfort thing. I also eat an Altoid before every show.
