The only good thing about

CONCUSSIONS is that they can be

T R E AT E D . Knowing the facts could save your athlete’s life. Recognition and proper management of concussions when they first occur can prevent further injury or even death. Most athletes can safely return to play after a concussion, but must recover at their own rate. The Concussion Institute at Gwinnett Medical Center-Duluth is the first facility of its kind in the Southeast, and its experts help athletes return to the field as quickly, and as safely, as possible. T

his month’s feature story, “Extreme Dads,” is a tribute to fathers who “go to the extreme” to be good parents and set positive examples for their children. It shows that, in their role as dads, these men provide inspiring lessons to others as well – fellow dads, colleagues, neighbors, even complete strangers. And it also reveals that in going the extra mile for one’s child, a father often gains as much (sometimes e v e n more) than his child.

EXTREME D Extreme In The Best Of Ways – Leading By Example

T h e criteria for consideration as a Sports Gwinnett’s “Extreme Dad” was the same as those for last month’s feature article, “Ultra Moms.” Selected from readers’ nominations, each of our chosen dads holds a demanding job, is unrivaled in his devotion to his child or children, and also is himself exceptionally committed to one or more sports. In the interviews for this piece, the fathers tried their best to deflect attention from themselves, and wanted to talk almost exclusively about the children. (Honestly, at times, it was challenging to keep these gentlemen “on course” during the discussions!) And while each dad readily admitted his whole-hearted devotion to fatherhood, each was also reluctant to embrace being held up as an “Extreme Dad.” In short, despite an objective view of these remarkable gentlemen, not a single one of them felt he was a better father than any other.

14

Sports Gwinnett’s “Extreme Dads” represent the best in what SPORTS GWINNETT MAGAZINE www.sportsgwinnett.com JUNE 2014

it means to be a good father at this moment in time. All of these men have wholly embraced their roles as parents, and insist that being a parent is the most joyful part of their lives. Their love for the opportunities (and even challenges) of fatherhood is indeed infectious. If you ever have an opportunity to meet any of these dads, not only will you enjoy your meeting, but you will gain some measure of wisdom from the experience.

LT. JASON R. ROZIER – GWINNETT POLICE A Father And His Best Friend

I

mmediately upon meeting Jason R. Rozier (35), a lieutenant and watch commander with the Gwinnett County Police, you feel at ease. He makes a first impression that is equal parts professionalism and humility. His uniform is impeccable and impressive, and his holstered gun does not make you uneasy – to the contrary, it makes you feel safe. In his presence, you know you are with a man who lives by the words “to protect and to serve” with the utmost sincerity. Born seven weeks premature in Toledo, Ohio, Jason points out that his first weeks were spent in an incubator – right in the midst of his family’s move to Georgia – and then moved immediately to Lilburn. Given that he literally never set a foot in the state of his birth, he considers himself a native Georgian. And he has spent virtually his entire life living in Gwinnett County, graduated from Parkview High School. He is also a graduate of the University of Georgia. Jason’s father was an FBI agent, serving 33 years investigating serious crimes for the United States. Despite holding a very dangerous job, he treasured every single day of it, and groomed his sons for FBI careers as well. (Jason’s mother, aunt, and uncle also worked for the FBI.) But even if the branches never fall far from the tree, children usually find their own path in life. Indeed, among a family with three boys, Jason and one of his brothers did go into law enforcement. But both found their callings with the Gwinnett Police where they work today, and both intend to spend their careers serving the citizens of Gwinnett County. Before holding his current position, Jason (now a 13 veteran of GCPD) has served as a Patrol Officer, in Special Investigations unit, the Criminal Investigations unit, Parks unit, and over seven years on the SWAT tactical team. He also serves in Backgrounds/Recruiting, where he physically prepares recruits for the upcoming academy. Jason and his wife, Danielle (also a Parkview and UGA graduate), are the proud

16

parents of a son, Colten, age 5. Their son was born unexpectedly with Down’s Syndrome, and Jason describes Colten as an “angel,” as well as “my best friend.” Jason admits being overwhelmed at first upon learning of Colten’s challenges, but notes that his family, colleagues, and friends provided (and to this day still provide) overwhelming support in helping Danielle and him adjust to their roles as, not only new parents, but as parents of a special needs child. And the truth is, thus far Colten has not missed a beat in his young life. He is very much a typical five-year-old kid - loving sports (currently he plays soccer), art, music, and just about everything he encounters. Jason simply cannot talk about Colten without first breaking out a big grin. (And their son’s needs have provided new opportunities for Jason and Danielle, where they have been active with Special Populations Tennis, the Georgia Special Olympics, Friends of L’Arche, as well as Exceptional Kids Athletics.) Jason admits that being a parent to a special needs child can be tough at times. But he also notes that it brings special blessings, too. Notes Jason, “Whereas most kids, upon becoming an adult, leave the nest, Colten will be with me for the rest of my life. I have a lifelong best friend. I will get to be there - with and for him - always. I truly wouldn’t want it to any other way.”

Jason is quite the extreme athlete as well. Loving everything fitness related, he has competed in countless races, from 5K’s, to obstacle course runs, and a half-ironman triathlon. For these races, Colten is his training partner (as Jason either pushes him in a jogging stroller, carries him in a baby carrier, or pulls him in a carriage attached to his bike), providing him an extra load (and fun) for better training. Jason sets a main fitness goal each year. He is currently training three plus hours per day for his first full Ironman Triathlon to be held in August in Boulder, Colorado. After Boulder, he would like to run the Boston Marathon. Jason loves to set high goals for himself, and give his all to meet them. Without a doubt, his ultimate goal is to hike the Appalachian Trail with Colten at his side. That is years (probably even a couple decades away), but Jason thinks about it regularly. He knows he will have many special moments with best friend until then, but Jason knows it will be one fine day when he and Colten set out for their journey of celebrating a lifetime together.

Fostering A Commitment To Faith And Integrity

B

“He didn’t tell me how to live; he lived, and let me watch him do it.” 18

– Clarence Budington Kelland

rian Teems (40) is a Driver Engineer with the Gwinnett County Fire & Emergency Services. Both a firefighter and EMT, he serves out of Station #15 in Lawrenceville. He has served Gwinnett County for over eight years, and has been a firefighter for a total of ten years. He also works part time for his church, Blackshear Place Baptist Church in Flowery Branch. His wife, Lisa, also works in the office of their church. Brian and Lisa are the proud parents of daughter, Bailee, age 16, and son, Parker, age 11. Bailee played fast-pitch softball and was a cheerleader until age 13, and recently switched full-time to cheerleading. She currently cheers for her high school varsity football squad. She is also planning to try out for her varsity girls’ golf team. (Brian taught her to play and she has fallen in love with the sport.) As for Parker, he also plays some golf, but his sport of clear choice is baseball – starting playing second base (like is father did) at

SPORTS GWINNETT MAGAZINE www.sportsgwinnett.com JUNE 2014

age 4. He plays in both spring and fall leagues (with GBAA), and this month will try out for a Gainesville travel team – his first attempt to join a travel squad. Parker has big dreams regarding baseball, already hoping to play MLB one day. Brian has always been assistant coach for all of Parker’s teams through the years. And his parents support him wholeheartedly and provide a private coach for him. As for his own participation in sports, Brian plays golf. But like his son, Brian’s true sports passion is baseball – he played varsity baseball as a second basemen in high school. (He admits that, to this day, if a Braves game is being televised, it is on at the Teems household. He attends both Atlanta and Gwinnett Braves games when possible.) He also played varsity basketball. For 22 years, Brian also played softball in recreation and church leagues. He is a committed weightlifter and other forms of physical fitness. And finally, he is a deer hunter, both with a bow and rifle. The entire Teems family is heavily involved in their church. Again, Brian and Lisa are actually employed by the church, and Brian also sings in the choir, and he and Lisa are both active in supporting the youth program. Both Bailee and Parker also participate in the church’s youth programs. In speaking specifically about his role as a father, Brian emphasizes his passing along to his children his commitment to his Christian faith, as he puts it, “putting the Lord first and foremost in their lives”. He serves as a deacon in his church, and views his faith as the most important gift he and Julie have provided their children. He also notes that he has tried to impress upon his children the importance of personal integrity, noting, “nobody can take away your good name, but you can lose it [by making poor choices.]” In summing up his role as a parent, Brain puts it very simply, “anybody can be a father, but not everybody can be a dad.”

ZACK CHENOWETH photos by PORTRAITSNAP.COM SPORTS GWINNETT MAGAZINE www.sportsgwinnett.com JUNE 2014

19

ZACK CHENOWETH

An Extraordinary Commitment to Find Common Ground

Z

ack Chenoweth, (31) a native Georgian, has lived in Gwinnett County since 2006. His is a single father of a daughter, Addison (6). Zack is a warehouse supervisor for Uline. In his role as father, Zack has been and remains determined to find sporting and recreational events with which he can participate along side his daughter. This has made for some creative thinking on his part. Unlike the father of a son (who typically is involved with a child Addison’s age in flag football, baseball, or the like), it is not as easy to find sports with which he can share experiences with his daughter. But one should never underestimate the power of a committed and creative dad. Zack and Addison have found plenty of sports to share – and they have provided bonding experiences that easily equal any of father and son. One of their shared interests is rock climbing. Through a family member from Chattanooga (somewhat of a mecca for climbing in the Southeast), Addison became interested in rock climbing. Zack turned to Adrenaline Climbing, an indoor climbing gym, as a place to get started. (Zack is also involved in outdoor rock climbing – especially at Boat Rock in Atlanta and Mount Yonah in Cleveland, Georgia. He is also keen to do more climbing in Chattanooga.) But he immediately found a stumbling block to overcome. At the time these two started, Addison was too young to participate in a group climbing setting and thereby enjoy the benefits of proper coaching. (There simply were not enough kids her age – 3 at the time – to form a class.) Undeterred, Zack began coaching Addison himself until she reached age 5, and then he began recruiting kids for the sport of climbing. Addison wanted to climb with her dad, and Zack was determined to find a way for her to enjoy the benefits that come from group climbing and coaching. You guessed it – just months before Addison turning 5, Zack had recruited enough little ones to enable Adrenaline Climbing to form their youngest climbing group ever, ages 5 - 7. Zack and Addison have spent many

20

Zach chenoweth with daughter addison, 6. photos by PORTRAITSNAP.COM

hours learning and training together in the unique sport of rock climbing. Zack points out that climbing has imparted many lessons he wants to teach her as a father. Climbing has taught her to take care of her body through the rigors of physical fitness. It has also taught her much about the nature of problem solving – indeed, a lesson all fathers want to impart to a child. And, finally, climbing has played no small measure in helping Zack teach his daughter the lessons that are learned through “failing.” (Often it takes several attempts for a climber to successfully complete a particular climb.) Developing the mental fortitude to work through failure is another lesson a good father wants to instill in his child. Zack and Addison also enjoy outdoor and water sports. Zack’s parents own a place at Lake Hartwell and, when not climbing, the two can be found enjoying swimming, hiking, and camping. And these activities have imparted another life lesson – and that is that life is to be enjoyed - that plain old “fun” should be an important component of life. (Indeed, with the emphasis on “success,” society has, to a large degree, lost sight of this.) Despite the creative lengths Zack has put forth in finding sports and recreation in which both he and Addison can participate, he is well aware that his daughter will soon want to participate in other activities – maybe those in which he cannot be as much a part. For example, Addison will soon likely start

SPORTS GWINNETT MAGAZINE www.sportsgwinnett.com JUNE 2014

taking ballet, gymnastics, and soccer. And Zack is supportive of her participation in these sports as well. He wants his daughter to be a well-rounded child and have the freedom to pursue all her interests. Given all the life lessons Zack has imparted to Addison, he is most proud of two things – he feels he has played some role in fostering a healthy curiosity in Addison, a trait that will serve her well her whole life. Also, while he downplays his role as to this second trait, he notes that Addison is extremely compassionate. Again, this is another trait that will serve her (and, importantly, many others) well in her life. If the world were comprised of more of those with healthy doses of compassion, it would certainly be a better place in which to live. It is not every father who would go to the extremes he has to influence and be a part of a daughter’s involvement in sports. As Zack would readily admit, however, it has paid dividends well beyond his investments.

JASON MILLER Extreme Is The Norm With The Miller Family

J

ason Miller (35), a native of Michigan, moved to Gwinnett County in 2008. He and his wife, Stephanie, have four children – two boys (Colin, 14, and Damon, 13) and twin girls (Rianna and Shilo who are 11). As if keeping a family of six going is not enough, both Jason and Stephanie are ultra athletes. Jason played basketball and soccer during his high school days, and stayed active with recreational leagues in college. But like many, after that he began to focus on his career (currently working in the mortgage business) and his commitment to sports and recreation dwindled to nothing much at all. But one day in July 2008, Jason saw a picture of himself. He did not like what he saw. Upon hopping on the scales, he was surprised to know he weighed 213. This was more than an eye opener. That day changed his entire life. And it has made quite the impact on his entire family as well. Immediately Jason began working out – vigorously – seven days a week. (He dropped 56 pounds in five weeks.) His workouts included swimming at the YMCA, lifting weights, and running during lunchtime. He took to

exercise and fitness with unbridled tenacity. And in no time he began to set lofty goals for himself. A runner first, regarding distances, Jason has literally run the gamut. Starting in 2009, he has completed 14 marathons (with an astonishing personal record of 3:08), a number of 50 mile and 24 hour races, as well as running 126.2 miles from Atlanta to Warner Robins with the Gwinnett Running Club. But running in no way defines Jason as an athlete. He has also completed multiple triathlons (from sprint to Ironman distances). He has completed three Ironman distance triathlons (2.4 miles swim, 112 miles bicycle race, then followed by the traditional marathon distance of 26.2 miles) – Florida, Louisville, and Arizona. His personal record to date is 10:39, and he is currently training for the inaugural Chattanooga Ironman Triathlon to be held this September. His future goals include completing the Spartathlon – a race held annually in Greece (from Athens to Sparta covering over 150 miles) - and completing a 200 miler. Like a lot of ultra athletes, Jason often participates to raise awareness and money for charitable causes. With all that said, Jason probably has a “leg up” when it comes to proper training. Stephanie is a personal trainer and ultra distance runner herself. She has been a top 10 finisher at the Disney and Tampa Marathons. She is also an overall winner and course record holder at the Peanut Island 24 Hour, and a twotime winner of the Crooms Fool 50 Mile Race,

both being held in Florida. (Anybody want to challenge this pair to a run-off?) Not surprisingly, all of Jason and Stephanie’s children are extraordinarily involved in sports. Colin swims for Peachtree Ridge High School and this past year made it to the Gwinnett County meet. Damon is the runner of the boys, running short and long distances, including a 1:44 at the Run The Reagan HalfMarathon as a ten-year-old. He has participated with the Jack Rabbit cross-country and track teams. Twins Rianna and Shilo hold their own at their young ages. Rianna is a gymnast with both Sugarloaf Performing Arts and Georgia Gymnastics. Shilo dances ballet, jazz, and modern at Sugarloaf Performing Arts. And both girls have taken up running as well. No doubt, you are getting the picture here. Sports are a major factor of family life for the Millers. And Jason will tell you that his extreme commitment to fitness has made him a better father in several ways. Through his own struggles, he has taught his children the importance of doing your best, giving your all, and, importantly, how to handle defeat. As Jason points out, it’s tough to give your all to something only to fall short come race or performance time. Jason’s four children know that everyone gets knocked down a bit in life. But they also know the only wise option is getting back up and moving forward. As much as athletics means to him, Jason is clear that his most important role right now is that of being a father. And he states unequiv-

ocally that the best gift he can give them is his love. He wants them to know and feel that they are loved, and he hopes that planting these roots helps them develop a love for themselves (physically, spiritually, and emotionally), and in turn fosters love for others.

“Extreme Dads” Are Definitely Unique Sports Gwinnett’s “Extreme Dads” (just like the “Ultra Moms”) prove that the ways in which parents can care for and inspire their children are endless. Indeed, there are seemingly as many paths as there are fathers. Each “Extreme Dad” has given the best he has as a father, and imparted invaluable lessons. And each will readily tell you that, along his journey as dad, he has gained wisdom that only fatherhood can provide. Congratulations and thank you to each one of Sports Gwinnett’s “Extreme Dads.”

THE road less traveled

HOT YOGA Written by Reg L. Carver

The Road Less Traveled. is a regular column, where we will take a look at individuals and sports/recreation that are often overlooked by most mainstream sports magazines. We hope you enjoy our detours.

F

or a sports writer, I have never been much on participating in sports or regular exercise myself. Don’t get me wrong - I love sports. As a matter of fact, for years, I played a lot of tennis – and at one time was pretty good at it. But excepting my few years of tennis, I’ve done more “spectating” than anything else.

Indeed, at the end of the day, I am the stereotypical artistic/creative type. My passions are writing and photography – far from actually participating in anything that requires physical exertion. I’m much better at writing about sports than I am at playing them. But I admire athletes greatly, find the great ones fascinating, and am impressed with the feats many have achieved.

Hot Yoga - The Best Thing I Ever Did For Myself The closest I ever came to “going deep” into anything athletic was my experimentation with Bikram Yoga, one of several types of hot yoga. It was absolutely the best thing I have ever done for myself - physically and mentally. I practiced Bikram Yoga for close to a year before convincing myself it was taking more time than I had to devote to it. (In one way, that’s an excuse, but in another sense, it’s the truth. By the time I drove to the studio, took the 90 minutes class, showered, and made it back home, it took 2½ to 3 hours per day, five to six days each week. With work, helping run a household and raising kids, it proved too much for me to make it to class on a daily basis.) In the United States, hot yoga has been around for a number of decades. Most credit

24

This Age-Old Form Of Exercise Can Heal Body And Mind Bikram Choudhury with introducing hot yoga in the United States. (As you probably know, yoga originated in and around India as a form of exercise and meditation. In many respects, not much has changed from its earliest days.) There are many types of hot yoga (including Bikram, Evolation, Power, and just generic “Hot,”) but this practice is basically a session of specific postures (known as “asanas”) in a room heated to approximately 100 to 105 degrees F with controlled humidity. (The idea is that the increased heat and humidity provides two specific benefits – one, it provides the body with increased flexibility and muscle tone, and two, the intense heat causes the body to sweat profusely, releasing harmful toxins.)

“Yoga is just good for you.”

For my time practicing Bikram Yoga, I indeed grew to love it. But to this day, I cannot explain how I stuck with it as long as I did. I remember my first session very clearly – it was so grueling that I could only participate in about one-third of the class. But I felt so good after class that I became hooked in a big way. And in no time, I was getting the hang of it – my body adapting to the heat, becoming somewhat proficient with the poses, and I found it to benefit me in many ways – from a relaxed state of mind, to my energy level, to attaining near perfect weight, to even starting to develop toned muscles. Honestly, my skin even started to have this kind of healthy glow. (I’m not kidding!)

Some Well-Known Yogis

A Practice Worth The Commitment As I stated, the only problem with hot yoga is the time commitment. To get its full benefits, one must go five to six times per week. But honestly, if you can figure out a way to make this kind of schedule work, I assure you that you will be glad you did. But please keep in mind that the first few classes are very difficult to get through. Just try to trust me on this. You will get the hang of it, and you will never regret sticking it out. (All that said, as with any rigorous exercise regimen, please get your physician’s blessing before beginning if you have any health issues. Hot yoga is tough, and you must be able to withstand the intense heat for an extended period of time. Some medical conditions could make participation in hot yoga a serious health hazard.)

SPORTS GWINNETT MAGAZINE www.sportsgwinnett.com JUNE 2014

– Kareem Abdul-Jabbar

You don’t have to accept my word on this. Yoga is the exercise of choice from some of the fittest people on the planet. From ballet dancers, to ultra athletes, to many in the NFL, yoga is highly popular among top athletes. Some well-known practitioners include Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Andy Murray, Lea Michelle, Christy Turlington, Adam Levine, and Sting. All these folks will tell you that yoga keeps their bodies and minds in optimum condition.

Hot Yoga Is Truly “All That” I am serious about this. If you are looking for the one thing you can do to reach your highest state of health and fitness, you should really give hot yoga a chance. It will feel like hell (literally) at first, but, as I said, if you give it just a few classes, you will agree with me that it is just about the best thing going. (Various forms of hot yoga are offered in a number of studios in and around Gwinnett County.) For those of you who give it a try, I wish you the best. And please let me know what you think. I really would be interested to know if your thoughts mirror mine. (I intend to get back to it when I again have the time available. I feel like I am currently doing my body and mind an injustice by not practicing at this time. I know what I’m missing!) Namaste. Reg L. Carver is a writer and photographer in Johns Creek, Georgia. n honor of National Trails Day, June 7, 2014, the U.S. Secretary of the Interior Sally Jewell and Director of the National Park Service Jonathan B. Jarvis announced four trails in the Gwinnett County park system as national recreation trails. They also chose 15 other hiking and biking trails and two water trails around the U.S., adding 452 miles in 11 states to the National Trails System. Gwinnett’s four national trails are located in Harbins Park in the Dacula area, Little Mulberry Park in the Dacula area, McDaniel Farm Park in the Duluth area, and Settles Bridge Park in the Suwanee area. In total, Gwinnett’s four trails make up approximately 15 miles of the 452 newest miles in the trail system. “This is an exciting time for parks and recreation in Gwinnett County,” said Commission Chairman Charlotte Nash. “I am so proud that all four trails named in Georgia this year are within our very own county parks system.”

The national recreation trail designation recognizes existing trails and trail systems that link communities to recreational opportunities on public lands and in local parks across the nation.
