Dear Readers,

This time two years ago we proudly presented you with our inaugural edition of Sports & Activities Directory for Davie, Cooper City and Southwest Ranches; what an incredible two years it’s been! Throughout this time, I have discovered many unique, interesting services available in our area, and have enjoyed wrapping up my findings in this beautiful magazine. I am happy to hear that so many of you are taking advantage of our product and are making the most of the South Florida living. With such terrific feedback from moms, dads, kids, businesses, schools, sports programs, organizations and city officials, it seems that we have been truly embraced by the entire community. Since 2002, our directory has been producing the only source of information on sports and activities in our surrounding cities of Weston, Pembroke Pines and Plantation. The 2012 launch of the Davie, Cooper City and Southwest Ranches directory stirred a lot of interest in other areas. The popular demand for our magazine has encouraged us to keep going and expand further. In the last two years we have grown over 150%. Along with our step into the age of technology and the launch of our Smart Phone App in January 2014, we are now also Publishing in Coral Springs/Parkland, Fort Lauderdale and have even gone beyond Broward County across the state to Manatee County. We strive to provide you with all the information you need to make sure you sign up for the right sports teams on time, find the perfect dance studio for an aspiring ballerina, and get the best deals on martial arts training in your area. We offer you the resources needed to make the best out of your community. The holidays are upon us and there are so many wonderful events going on that bring the community together and create that warm spirit of the season. Let your little ones adorn their Halloween costumes and parade though the Countryside Shops area in Cooper City, as they host their annual ‘Trick or Treat shop to shop event.’ Or maybe enjoy taking part in or being a spectator at a competitive Horse Show in Southwest Ranches. Perhaps spend an evening of Holiday celebrations in Davie as they light up the greens and bring in twenty tons of snow! This season, as always, check out our events pages or get into our App to find out what’s going on and where. ‘Tis the season for giving! Concert or performance tickets make a great gift for almost anyone. We are so excited to be giving away FREE TICKETS courtesy of Live Nation! We have tickets to give away for the astounding Cirque Du Soleil performance showing this December in Miami! Or…. Perhaps you’ll be the lucky winner of tickets to ‘The Fresh Beat Band’ in Mizner Park on November 7th. We hope this gift to our winning readers will bring many smiles, a ton of fun and wonderful lifetime memories. See below for details on how to win. While on the subject of giving, see our list of local clubs & organizations such as Kids In Distress that depend on the generosity of people like you. This is a great time to teach our children the valuable lesson of giving to those less fortunate. So with all that being said, I look forward to another great year. I give thanks to our entire community and, of course, the Sports & Activities Directory team for an amazing two years in publication. Happy Anniversary and Happy Holidays to you all! My very best to you, Nikki Reading Publisher

LETTER FROM THE COOPER CITY MAYOR

H

ello, I’m Greg Ross, Mayor of Cooper City. I appreciate the opportunity to once again provide you with exciting news about upcoming events in Cooper City. The first item I would like to bring to your attention today is the upcoming Elections on November 4th, 2014. Cooper City has four elected Commissioners and one elected Mayor. Cooper City’s Elected Officials are voted in to a four year term. They are term limited to three consecutive terms (12 years total). The elections are staggered which means that all Commissioners and the Mayor are not elected at the same time. Every two years, when a general election is held, two of the four Commissioners are up for election. The Mayor’s election is held the same year the Presidential Election is held. This year Cooper City has one contested race; that of District 2 Commissioner John Sims whose opponent is Michael de Miranda. Commissioner Lisa Mallozzi, who was also up for re-election, does not have an opponent, therefore, will not be on the ballot. As with any election, I encourage all residents to educate themselves and to please vote. Yes, your vote does matter! Make it count! For over 30 years, the Optimist Club of Cooper City continues to provide a very

successful sports program to our community. The Club welcomes volunteers to assist with the many youth sports programs provided year round as well as the opportunity for new members to join the Club. Currently, the Club is gearing up for the Cowboys Football Tackle and Cheerleading opening season. Additionally, Fall Girls Softball and Fall Baseball registrations are currently ongoing on line or at the Optimist Clubhouse at the Cooper City Sports Complex. Cooper City is proud of providing its residents with many community events including: • Cooper City Fall Community Garage Sale, Saturday, October 11th. This event will take place from 7AM until Noon at the Sports Complex. Spaces are available for purchase to Cooper City residents only, at a cost of $20. • Community Book Swap, Friday, October 17th. This annual event is held at the Community Center from 6 – 7:30 PM. Drop off slightly used books; receive a ticket for the number of books donated. Use tickets in exchange for books. • Trick or Treat/Shop to Shop, Saturday, October 25th. Beginning at 10AM until Noon, the City will hold its annual complimentary costume contest (infants through 5th grade) at Countryside Shops. Prizes will be awarded for the best costumes. Should you wish further information about any of the upcoming events, please contact the Community Center at 954-434-4300 Ext. #233. Thank you for the opportunity to share highlights of upcoming events in Cooper City. Your Mayor, Greg Ross

HELLO DAVIE,

12

October, November and December are special months in the Town of Davie as the Department of Parks, Recreation and Cultural Arts offers our citizen’s so much to do and see. Here are some highlights. Join us for the Town’s Concerts on the Corner featuring musical performances by the Jimi Ruccolo Band on 10/9, the Andrew Morris Band on 10/23, the Jamie Mitchell Band on 11/6 and Happy Daze on 11/20. Each concert will have food and beverages for sale, bounce houses and a petting farm for the children. You will not want to miss our Annual Halloween Happenings this year as we are offering something new for our Town’s young children. In addition to the annual town-wide event for all age groups to be held on Sunday, October 26, at Pine Island Park, the Town’s staff will also host two special nights of Halloween activities for children ages 3- 7 at the Pine Island Park Multipurpose Center. On Friday night October 24, and Saturday night October 25, from 6- 9 p.m. bring your little ones to participate in a safe and fun evening with friendly Ghosts, Goblins and Ghouls while enjoying lots of Halloween games, arts and crafts, magic shows and a Halloween costume contest. For you Rodeo fans, the Southeastern Circuit Finals Rodeo will be held at the Town’s Bergeron Rodeo Grounds and Arena on November 6, 7 and 8. This always exciting and spectacular event kicks off at 7:30 pm each night. Join us for our Annual Veterans Day Ceremony on Tuesday, November 11, at Veterans Park. Our recognition and tribute to the men and woman who have served this Country with honor and distinction begins at 10:00 am. Here’s another opportunity to thank those who have put their lives on the line to help ensure that you and I get to enjoy the many freedoms that we share today as Americans. Don’t forget about the Town’s Annual Winter Holiday Lighting of the Greens and Snow Play on December 7th. This is one of Davie’s best events with the “official” lighting of the Town Hall grounds and 50 beautifully adorned holiday trees. Santa will be there along with twenty tons of snow and many other activities for the entire family to enjoy. On Saturday and Sunday December 13 and 14, come stroll the Bergeron Rodeo Grounds at the Town of Davie Green Fair and Holiday Craft Show. In its 20th year, the craft show highlights some of the finest country crafts and traditional arts. With over 70 vendors you are sure to find that unique holiday gift for friends and loved ones. While browsing, you will also enjoy musical performances and dancing demonstrations. Parking and entry into the event is free and the gates open at 9:00 am. For more information on these special events offered by town’s special events division, please visit the Town’s Website at www.davie-fl.gov or call 954-797-1145. While you will find many other programs and activities offered by the Town of Davie listed inside the Sports Directory, I would like to highlight three of these programs which I feel are both important and unique. Does your child need swimming lessons? If they do, don’t wait to make sure they become “water safe”. Take advantage of the Town’s year-round swimming lessons offered for both children and adults. Classes are held at the Pine Island Park pool twice a week for four weeks. Call 954-327-3927 for more information. Looking to start your 3, 4 or 5 year old child in a non-competitive sports program? Contact town staff and talk to them about our program called Smart Start Sports. With excellent coaches along with parent participation and safe and easy to use game equipment, over 150 pre-schoolers have learned the basics of sports programs such as baseball, soccer, football and basketball. I understand that all participating parents get a T-shirt identifying them as a Smart Start Sports Parent and there is a pizza party at the end of each program. Sounds like fun for everyone! For more information call 954-327-3929. Back by popular demand is our Soggy Doggy swimming program. This program is for dog owners that want to take their pets to the pool for a little water play. The activity, which is held at Betty Booth Roberts Park swimming pool, will be offered each Saturday from October 4 to February 14, 2015. Small dogs have the pool from 10:00 to 11:00 am and large dogs take over from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm. Each dog must be registered with Broward County and there is a fee of $5.00 for each pet. Need more information, call 954-327-3927. Finally, let me be the first to wish you a very enjoyable fall and holiday season.

As always, see you in the Parks. Respectfully yours,

Judy Paul, Mayor Town of Davie

T

o look at the wonder of a Cirque du Soleil artist’s body, one can only imagine the amount of training, conditioning, strict calorie counting and discipline that makes up a daily routine. Just what does it take to be able to bend, stretch and contort the body into such incredible and mind-blowing positions? Or to fly one-handed 30 feet in the air above an awestruck audience? It would probably surprise you to know that the artists of Cirque du Soleil’s Amaluna, coming to Miami in December this year, don’t actually give too much thought to what they are eating, drinking or doing in their down time. Although the troupe travels with four chefs, two physiotherapists and two coaches, these roles are seen as guides and resources, rather than a police force. “Our artists are professional athletes,” says Amaluna’s Head Coach Yohann Renne. “They have been practicing habits to keep their strength and agility at the level it needs to be from around the time they could walk.” Renne explains that the artistic support team will always guide an artist if they are feeling weak or rehabilitating through an injury, and provide assistance to those who seek it, but the goal is not to enforce specific training as each artist has their own tried and true methods of looking after themselves. Physiotherapist Lisa Basarab, says her role is to provide clinics and sports medicine to the performers, which aids in injury prevention and management, however, she says that the artists are all held accountable for their conditioning and physique. “In each city we visit, we hire a local masseuse and Pilates instructor and often invite guest teachers onsite to provide dance and yoga classes to keep the artists stimulated,” says Basarab. “Performing eight to ten shows per week means they get an

incredible workout just by being onstage, but it is important to their physical and mental wellbeing to be able to enjoy other types of conditioning.” These classes and training options are not enforced, and are simply a suggestion available for those who want it. There is also an elliptical machine and small fly-weight gym machine set up in the Artistic Tent (the onsite training facility) available for the artists to use and Basarab notes that about 80% of the tour members travel with bicycles (there are 46 artists working on Amaluna in addition to 68 technicians and support staff) to be able to explore the city they call home for six to eight weeks before moving on to the next destination. “People on tour have an adventurous spirit,” says Amaluna’s Company Manager Franck Hanselman. “Although the tour only gets one day off per week, you will often see anything from groups of cyclists and hikers to rock-climbers and runners, to scuba-divers and surfers and snowboarders! Since we are always on the move, there is always someplace new to explore and we are a very active bunch.” The onsite kitchen at Cirque du Soleil’s Amaluna prepares over 250 meals per day, but it is not always as health-conscious as you might think. “Our company was founded in Québéc, Canada, and the national dish there is Poutine – which is French fries topped with cheese curds and brown gravy. Definitely not what you would consider to be ‘professional athlete food!’” says Hanselman. “The chefs are feeding everyone onsite from the technicians, electricians, welders, plumbers and carpenters to the artists, musicians and

gymnasts – and everyone in between! With 17 different nationalities represented on tour, our kitchen does a wonderful job of preparing dishes from all over the world.” Acrobatic coach Misha Galkin says, “It is the responsibility of the artist to ensure they are getting the nutrients they need to perform their best; however, they are burning off so many calories during a performance that they can get away with eating pretty much what they want. We don’t enforce meal plans, curfews or restrictions but we are always available to give advice.” Galkin explains that when the artists first join Cirque du Soleil, they are met by a team of nutritionists and specialists at the company’s headquarters in Montréal to ensure they are equipped with the right information to look after themselves and continue a healthy career. Amaluna features a 70% female cast, which is a flip on the traditional casting of a Cirque du Soleil show where the male contingent usually represents 70% - 75% of the artists. Amaluna was created as the first Cirque du Soleil show in 30 years to represent and showcase the strength and power of women, while maintaining femininity and grace. Written and directed by Tony Awardwinning director, Diane Paulus, Cirque du Soleil’s Amaluna premieres under the iconic blue and yellow Big Top at Sun Life Stadium on December 11, 2014. For tickets and more information, visit www.cirquedusoleil.com/amaluna.

njoy a fun day of golfing while helping to support abused and neglected children in South Florida. The Kids In Distress (KID) Auxiliary, along with annual Presenting Sponsor Ultimate Software, are pleased to announce their upcoming KID Auxiliary Golf Tournament on Friday, October 24th at the Jacaranda Golf Club, located at 9200 West Broward Blvd. in Plantation. Registration and a BBQ lunch will begin at 11:30 a.m. with a shotgun start at 1:00 p.m. Players of all skill levels are invited to participate in this 18-hole scramble and enjoy a great afternoon of golf, contests, prizes and gifts. The tournament will be followed by a Caribbean buffet dinner in the Palm Room with an awards presentation and raffle prizes. Joining Ultimate Software are additional event sponsors, Greenberg Traurig, Leo Goodwin, Anda, BMW and Saxon Business Systems. Kids In Distress strives to establish strong and healthy families. It’s goal is not only to protect children from abuse and neglect, but to provide them with a safe, caring environment in which they can flourish and grow, and when possible, return them to their birth home. Of course, these efforts would not be possible without the support of the community. The individual player fee of $175 includes greens fee, cart, pre-tournament BBQ lunch, dinner and prizes. For $40, non-golfers will be able to purchase tickets in advance for the dinner. Various annual KID sponsorship opportunities are available, ranging from $10,000-$40,000, all of which provide recognition and tickets throughout the year at a variety of venues and events. To support the Golf Tournament itself, there are also event sponsorships that range from $200-$5,000. By taking part in the tournament, participants are both helping Kids In Distress and networking with business associates. The Kids In Distress Auxiliary is a talented and dedicated group of mostly Weston women committed to helping children who have been given no choice in their circumstance. Its

fundraising efforts are used to support the programs provided by Kids In Distress. Auxiliary members also act as “ambassadors” in the community, raising awareness about the plight of these children and partnering with Kids In Distress in its efforts to offer prevention programs to help break the cycle of abuse and neglect. “We are grateful to have such generous supporters of our KIDS golf tournament year after year,” said Rita Poh, co-chair for this year’s tournament. “What better way to support such a wonderful organization than taking to the golf course for a fun tournament. Together as a community, we will not only raise funds for Kids in Distress, but we will also raise awareness for one of the most important organizations in South Florida.” For additional information on Sponsorship opportunities, please contact Sandi Hertzbach at (786) 510-3744. For further information or to register, please contact event co-chairs Anita Rucker or Rita Poh at (954) 882-8956 or visit www.kidaux.org.

ack in 1992, Renée Herman took it upon herself to organize a food drive at Country Isles Elementary that would provide a week’s worth of groceries to 20 Weston area families who were down on their luck. She rallied the students to help with neighborhood canned food drives and camped outside of Publix Supermarkets to accept donations. They succeeded and the 20 families in need were fed. But she didn’t stop there. Twenty-two years later, Renée is still on a mission to stamp out hunger and help families in need. Since the inaugural Harvest Drive, the number of families in need multiplied, as did the amount of help required to accomplish such a task. After many years of orchestrating the details of this annual event, Renée has been blessed with several special people to assist her in her efforts. Patti Bradley, Kim O’Neill, Susan Gross, Davi Leoniff, Jodi Samson and Amy Freund all volunteer to share the responsibilities. It takes thousands of people to make this happen every year. “Organizations such as the Rotary Club of Weston and Plantation Rotary have been instrumental in helping with donations and money to buy groceries. Businesses such as The Castle Group help with a tremendous amount of volunteers. Individuals such as Jamie McDonnell, Michael Dagen, Jim Norton, Michael Freedland and Steve Goldstein, among many others, have been life savers in the 11th hour when we did not have enough food for the promised families,” said Renée. Another unique characteristic of the program is the compassion and dedication displayed each year by students who contribute. “What really makes this work, what is really special about Harvest Drive, is that it is the students and the schools that gather what we need and volunteer their time to make this a reality,” she says. Many of the students volunteer every year and she has formed a lasting bond with them throughout her time organizing the Harvest Drive. “Teaching children at an early age that their contributions can make a difference in the lives of others is what makes this project so rewarding,” Renée adds. Not only does this make the hard work and sacrifice pay off, it gives her hope for the future and inspires her to do even more.

This year, 180 public and private schools are involved in the mission to collect enough food to feed over 2,000 families throughout Broward County. Distribution sites will be set up at 12 local schools, with Western High School being the largest. In addition to these sites, approximately 168 other schools will be taking donations that will then be divided up between the area distribution sites. Families with children in the Broward County Schools are referred to the Harvest Drive by Broward County social workers as well as other local social service agencies based on their financial need. In addition to the week’s worth of groceries and Thanksgiving dinner, families are able to shop in the Harvest Drive’s makeshift stores for a variety of household items that have been donated. Volunteers work all year long collecting donations for the “Harvest Drive Boutiques” so that these families may find things they need at no cost to them. Western High, Pompano High and Westglades Middle School will be fully stocked with items such as toiletries, shoes, gently used toys, clothes and books. Items that many of us may take for granted are most in need by these families. “What keeps me awake at night worrying is that the day before the families arrive that week before Thanksgiving, we will be short. We need cash donations so we can buy the items we are short in the 11th hour. I cannot bear that our local, neighborhood families will go hungry when so many individuals, businesses and organizations have so much to give,” she said. Herman does not comprehend the word “no” when it comes to Harvest Drive. Her passion, persistence and work ethic will not allow her to accept “no”. The Harvest Drive team continues their efforts throughout the year. They would like to give special recognition to the North Broward Preparatory Middle School for their Fundraising efforts and collections for Harvest Drive. For the past 2 years they have assisted 75 Broward County School families with food and a boutique at their Spring Into Action Drive. “100% goes to these families in need! No one gets paid to run this organization,” Renée says. “We need more help. Hunger is a year round challenge.”

Fall and Winter Activities in Cooper City T

his time of the year is a special time of year, especially now that the baseball and football seasons are in full swing, not only for the pro’s but also for the ‘Little League’ and the local Optimist teams. For more than 30 years, the Optimist Club of Cooper City, along with myself since I have lived in Cooper City, have been a “Friend of Youth”. Each year, over 5,000 participants take part in the eight sports programs that our wonderful Cooper City Optimist Club has to offer. Programs such as Baseball, Basketball, , Cheerleading, Flag and Tackle Football, Soccer and Travel Soccer, and Softball are available throughout the year. Our fields, diamonds, courts and rinks are the best available, and support a variety of young minds and bodies. The Optimist Club of Cooper City promotes good sportsmanship and healthy competition throughout all age groups. All parents are encouraged to become involved with the various local programs to help ensure their continued success and maintain the club’s family environment. Make sure that you check the registration dates for the applicable programs that you want to participate in. Soccer, Softball and Baseball program registrations are coming up in September thru December, so don’t miss it! You can view

the programs and schedules on the Optimist Club of Cooper City’s website at http://www.coopercityoptimist.com. In addition to participation in the various programs, I urge you to consider a sponsorship to our local Optimist club. There are fantastic opportunities for sponsorship of the club in addition to the great rewards of that particular opportunity. Contact our local club at the website given above for sponsorship details. Adding to the Cooper City Sports Complex, Bill Lipps Sports Park and the twenty two other parks located throughout the city, the City of Cooper City has been active in the planning and developing the open plat of land at the South West corner of Stirling Road and Flamingo Road for the inclusion of a new multi-purpose park. This park is still in the initial planning phases, and the city will be conducting many meetings and workshops regarding the use of the facilities at that location. The initial plans are to have different types of sports facilities and fields, along with a passive park and other uses that the community feels as necessary to cater to our residents and various city sponsored programs. Should you have any questions or concerns regarding the use of the proposed park, feel free to contact me at the below number. The Public Works Department is in charge of operating and maintaining the neighborhood parks and the two sports complexes throughout Cooper City, and if you have any questions, issues or concerns, please contact our staff at city hall. Have a great Fall and Winter, be safe and as always, you can contact me, your ‘Go To’ Cooper City Commissioner, at any time for any reason at (954) 445-6997. Commissioner John Sims

T

he sun has definitely come out for one of south Florida’s own! That’s right, 9 year old Issie Swickle, of Davie, has been tapped to play the lead roll of Annie in the National Broadway Tour of the TONY award-winning musical Annie! In June, Issie traveled to Pearl Studios in New York City and competed against hundreds of would be Annie’s to nail down the top spot. Issie has been studying at Broadway Kids Studio since she was 5 years old. Issie’s mother, Dana Swickle, actually found the studio by accident. She got lost in the plaza, then ended up having Issie’s 5th birthday party there. The past 4 years she has taken hours of dance, piano, acting, and voice lessons and participated in many rehearsals and local shows. All to, hopefully, one day, hit it big on Broadway. Michelle Ameerally, owner of Broadway Kids Studio in Davie where Issie trains says, “Issie is simply amazing. This is not work for her. She loves everything about performing.” One of Issie’s good friends and fellow Broadway Kids Studio student Maisy Surman, 11, says she “talks to Issie on the phone a lot. We talk about normal things. I was so excited for Issie when she got the roll. I was sad because she was leaving, but so happy because she worked hard for this.” Shea Korman, 8, “I came to Broadway Kids Studio to take lessons after I saw Issie in the Sound of Music.” Emily Alderman - 15, Nya Owusu-Afriyie - 9, and Abby Canalejo - 10, have worked with Issie while at the studio and they all say, “Issie is a sweet, fun, and humble girl. She’s sassy, happy and we are all so happy for her.” How did a girl from Davie end up in New York City? Well, during the summer of 2013 Issie went to NYC and attended a workshop called Broadway Artists Alliance. This workshop is attended by agents seeking talent. This is where Issie met her Agent Nancy Carson of Carson Adler Agency. On June 8th 2014, Issie and her family flew to NYC for the first round of auditions for Annie. June 14th she was called back with a group of 6 girls and eventually told she was selected for the lead role of Annie. Her mother, Dana, said “We could not believe she got the lead role. We were stunned and just didn’t know

what to do or how to react.” When asked how Issie felt about landing the role, Dana said, “She’s nine. She was really happy, but I don’t think she understands the enormity of the situation. This tour is a pure blessing.” Issie and Dana have relocated to New York City while rehearsals are going on. Moving wasn’t an issue for Issie. She is so even keeled, she just goes with the flow. She understands what’s expected of her and she delivers. Rehearsals are six days a week and she gets up at six a.m. She attends tutoring from 9 to noon and then rehearses all afternoon. At about six p.m. she has another hour of schooling. We all know that Annie has short red hair, so what happened to Issie’s beautiful, long brown locks? They had to be cut for the roll and her hair was dyed red! Her hair will be donated to Locks of Love. “Issie loved to play with her hair. She was always playing with it. She would watch videos and learn different hair styles and try them out on herself. She knew if she got the role of Annie, she’d have to cut her hair. Once it was cut and dyed it was a little shocking to her. But now, she’s used to it and she’s able to style it in different ways,” her mother says. Issie says, “It’s like what Shailene Woodley had to do. Her character in Divergent had long hair. She had to cut it off for her character in The Fault in Our Stars. It will grow back!” When asked if she had any advice for other kids who dream of performing Issie said, “Hard work pays off. Keep trying and believe in yourself.” Although this tour of Annie is scheduled for 3 years, Issie has signed on for one year. After that, everything will be re-evaluated and decisions made as to whether or not she will continue with the show or if the role will be recast. Annie runs October 7 -19 at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts as part of the Broadway Across America-Fort Lauderdale series, 201 SW Fifth Ave., Fort Lauderdale. For more information, call 954-462-0222 or visit BrowardCenter.org. Broadway Kids Studio is located at 9042 West State Road 84 Davie, Florida 33324, 954-693-7500.

Pickleball - A Delicious New Sport In Davie By Kelly Wilson

P

ickleball…It’s the not so new, new craze and it is taking South Florida by storm. This quirky, yet highly athletic pastime was invented in Bainbridge Island, Washington in 1965 by then State Representative Joel Pritchard after returning from a round of golf where he and his family found they had nothing to do on a Saturday afternoon. After wanting to play badminton and not being able to find a shuttle cock, Pritchard picked up a whiffle ball. He lowered the net and fabricated some paddles from plywood to go along with it, thus spawning a new favorite activity. According to Wikipedia, Pritchard’s wife stated the unique game was named after the Pickle Boat where oarsmen were chosen from the leftovers of the other boats in the same way the enterprise was assembled using leftover pieces from a variety of other games. Just as the game is a mish-mosh of equipment from other sports, so too, are the rules which are a variation of those for tennis. In a nutshell, four people are needed to play, and each will serve. The score goes up to 11, teams must win by two and only the server can score. In Davie’s Bamford Park, you, too can play Pickleball. This game, which has an international following, is a cross between tennis, table tennis and badminton and uses game specific lightweight, graphite paddles, a badminton net and a whiffle ball. The website for the International Federation of Pickleball indicates Canada, Spain, India and the United States are participating countries.

Pickleball appeals to vast range of athletes. Children under 10 enjoy the game as well as seniors. Because of the lightweight ball and racquet and the fact that is can be played indoors as well as outdoors, it is not as stressing to the body. Park employee Anthony stated that the sport’s popularity has gained momentum to where Parks and Recreations Director David Flaherty along town of Davie employees play as well. According to Pickleball enthusiast Caron Miller, “if you play a racquet sport, you can play this.” Anthony emphasized that although racquet sport experience is helpful, it is not required. Of the 22 players in Bamford Park’s Pickleball league, there are athletes who have never played a racquet sport, others are soccer players and even foot ball players. The game is open to anyone who is interested in sharing a commonality on the court. League membership is only $20. Pickleball has been at Bamford park for about one and a half years. Every Tuesday and Thursday evening as well as on Saturdays, the park holds free-play where everyone is welcome to play. On Wednesdays, the court is reserved for league members only. The league welcomes everyone to come on out and take a look at the oldest new craze around. You never know, you might just be smitten with it! For more information about Pickleball, visit http://www.usapa.org/. You can also call Bamford Park at 954-327-3941 for more information about court schedules as well as the Pickleball league.

uch has changed since the last time we portrayed Inna’s Hall of Fame Performing Arts Center. Founded in 1994 as “Inna Studio of Dance & Musical Art” in Israel by owner and artistic director, Inna Maor, Inna’s Hall of Fame started with a small space in Stirling Town Center in 2011. With steady management and never-ending drive, Inna’s HOF has developed into Cooper City’s go-to facility for enthusiasts of art and cultural education. With two dance studios, five large classrooms (each with an upright piano), a separate visual arts studio, and two extended classrooms for their Aftercare program, Inna’s HOF is now opening a Community Black Box Theatre. Inna’s Hall of Fame Performing Arts Center is slowly turning into a full-fledged Conservatory with programs in dance, theatre, music, visual arts, and languages. Private and semi-private classes are offered in dance, plus voice, piano, strings, percussion, and wind instruments in all styles of music (classical, jazz, rock, etc). Inna’s HOF also boasts over 30 different group classes in music, dance, acting, visual arts, and languages for ages 3 to adult. The Inna’s HOF Aftercare Program is truly unique in its philosophy and offers participants 2 hours of group classes in all aspects of the arts, plus homework supervision and cultural excursions. The school’s mission is to provide the highest caliber of artistic education to their students so that they may achieve their fullest potential as young artists. To achieve this mission, Inna’s HOF has identified five goals: • Inna’s HOF will strive to ensure that financial considerations are not a deterrent to the enrollment of the most talented young performing artists from the Cooper City, Davie, Pembroke Pines, and Hollywood areas. • Inna’s HOF will provide an educational environment that fosters the artistic, intellectual,

and personal growth of its students enabling them to find their potential and achieve success as artists and citizens, inspiring the leaders of tomorrow. • Inna’s HOF will provide a welcoming atmosphere to all students. Inna’s HOF is a place for any student who loves dance, music, theatre, and visual arts. No cliques. No elitism. Just love of the arts and respect for all. • Inna’s HOF will continue to elevate its educational and artistic standards, remaining responsive to changing conditions in the performing arts community. • Inna’s HOF will continue to attract and retain renowned faculty members in all disciplines, by providing a collaborative work environment and involving them fully in the artistic and educational life of our community. Last year Inna’s HOF proudly received 1st and 2nd places in drum solos at the Florida Music Federation Festival in Jacksonville and high gold in solo performance at the 2013 Nexstar Dance Competition. Apart from part-taking in annual music festivals and dance competitions, Inna’s HOF students also display their talents at various art exhibits, participate in community showcases, put on an end of the year production, and have the chance to spend their summer in a Musical Theatre Summer Camp. Inna’s HOF is looking forward to opening its Community Black Box Theatre on October 23, 2014 at its Ribbon Cutting Ceremony with a teacher and student showcase for our community. All arts enthusiasts welcome. For more information about Inna’s Hall of Fame, please call (954) 237-6201 or visit out website www.innashof.com.

aving started dancing at just 2 ½ years old, by 19, Jennifer Delgado had been dancing the better part of her life. By age 5, she was competing nationally and she did so, successfully, until the age of 18. Shortly after, Jennifer ventured out to dance professionally. While finding success in professional work, Jennifer found she had a talent for choreography. After much recognition as a professional choreographer, she took the next step and opened Performance Edge Dance Studio while simultaneously attending Florida International University to acquire her degree in Hospitality. In the nine years since Performance Edge Dance Studio (PEDC) originally opened the doors to the 6,000 square foot facility, many successes have been realized. Enrollment has blossomed to over 300 students ranging from 2 ½ to 18 years of age and of those students, 70 are members of the nationally ranked competition team, which ranges from 6 to 18 years of age. The competition team currently holds three national titles, is regularly recognized for choreography and consistently places as Grand Champion. The accomplishments of the studio draw talented students from all corners of South Florida wanting to study under Jennifer. Students travel daily from Boca, Hollywood and even Miami. PEDC brought dance to Weston and has turned Weston into a competition town. Jennifer stated, “Nine years ago, it wasn’t known in the area. Now we have people winning national titles, becoming super talents and furthering their careers.” One such student is Rachel Dagen, who has been dancing with PEDC for 8 years. Currently a sophomore at Western High School, Rachel dances at the studio Monday through Friday. As editor of the school newspaper and a member of the debate team, as well as other clubs, Rachel’s days often consist of “school, then after school meetings, dance and homework.” She jokes that she often gets, “no sleep” but she loves her life. An equally dedicated student is 11-year-old Janey Marsh, who started dancing at PEDC three years ago. Always an athlete, she found herself dancing recreationally her first year while she continued to play lacrosse and softball. By the second year, she decided her true passion was dance and asked for permission to dance full time. Her parents gave Janey a tough choice to make: continue with Lacrosse and Softball, or dance. Much to her brother’s dismay, she gave up a lifetime of lacrosse and softball. Their mother, Suzy said, “They were upset. They told her, ‘You can’t trade in your cleats for ballet shoes.’” Janey has made PEDC her second home and is there five

to six days a week. Much like Rachel, Janey completes her homework on site and then she goes straight into practice. She is now on the very elite competition team, which is selected by audition only. Janey’s parents found themselves thrown into a world full of fake eyelashes, makeup and hair…a far cry from red clay stains and lacrosse sticks. Suzy is quick to acknowledge that Mrs. Jen and her mother, Linda, have been “nothing but amazing getting us adjusted. It’s new to us as parents.” Rachel recognizes the unique quality of the studio, “Our studio is very different. As soon as you walk in, you feel like you are a part of a family. Many studios are cutthroat, my kid is better than yours, but we aren’t like that. We all feel special in every way.” Rachel’s competition team is the 2011 Grand National Champions in the NextStar competition. She herself is also very personally accomplished. She feels dance has “widened horizons in life.” Rachel stated, “Mrs. Jen has taught me many things, not only related to dance, but to life. I am very grateful for what she has taught me. Dance has given me the confidence to pursue debate and other clubs in school.” Janey’s mother, Suzy, has seen changes in her daughter, which she attributes to dance and her time with Mrs. Jen. Not only has Janey blossomed from the “kid off the field to people asking which studio she came from,” but also, she is making more mature decisions. Last summer she gave up sleep away camp, a tradition with her brothers for the last 4 years, as soon as she realized Nationals was at the same time. One of the great pleasures for Jennifer is seeing the kids go on to pursue their education and dance in college. Rachel, who does not see dance as her career, dances as a hobby because she loves it. Her next steps after high school will not be in a dance studio, but rather a Bachelor’s Degree in Business followed by a Law Degree. Jennifer also proudly reflects that one PEDC alumnus, who began as a recreational dancer, is currently dancing at Universal Studios after attending The University of Florida. Some PEDC students have attended the school from the inaugural class and have recently graduated. Three of the original students are currently attending The University of Buffalo together, which boasts an accomplished musical theater program. It has now all come full circle and Mrs. Jen is anxiously awaiting her upcoming trip to NY to see them perform. PEDC is located at 2750 Glades Circle, Suite 500 Weston, FL 33327. They offer a variety of classes for all ages. For more information about classes and programs, call (954) 389-6222 or email info@performanceedgedance.com.

“Just Like Mom!”

- Generations at Dancing Plus. By Kelly Wilson

I

f you are looking for a dance studio, there are plenty to be found. But if you are looking for a studio that feels like family when you are away from home, you should check out Dancing Plus in Pembroke Pines. For 35 years, owner Shari Malvin has cultivated multiple thousands of dancers in her studio on 104th and Taft. When the studio doors originally opened, Taft was a dirt road and Embassy lakes was nothing but cow pastures. In the 5 dance rooms of her 5,000 square foot studio, at any time you can find a combination of classes being held. Ms. Shari offers classes for two and a half year olds through adults including an adult Jazz class. Additionally, Dancing Plus offers Tap, Ballet, Lyrical, Hip Hop, Contemporary, Acro and Pointe. A lifetime dancer herself, Ms. Shari has watched her students mature into adults. Currently, more than 20 former students bring their own children to the studio, dancing in the same rooms they did as children; in the same studio in which they grew up. And they truly do grow up here. Ms. Shari recognizes that through dance, children learn so much more than the steps. They learn team spirit, discipline, poise, self-esteem, grace and comradery. The motto of Dancing Plus is “We’re more than just a dance studio. We’re a family” and it is clear when you walk in the door. Currently, the studio has approximately 12 instructors. Many instructors return to Dancing Plus once establishing themselves professionally and travel from their homes in South Florida to work as guest choreographers or dancers. Ms. Shari’s current and past instructors have choreographed for or danced with artists such as Flo Rida, Gwen Stefani, Ciara and the Miami Heat Dancers. Instructors have also toured with Mylie Cyrus, Chris Brown, and Pit Bull and choreographed and danced in professional music videos. Dancing Plus is a strong Competition Studio. Of the nearly

300 active students, approximately 100 dancers participate on the competition team. The Competition Team’s history dates back to the inaugural year of the studio, 1980. Many of the parents whose children are currently studying at Dancing Plus were members of the charter team. In addition to competition, students of Dancing Plus have appeared locally at events such as Premios Juventud, a youth awards show held annually by local television station Univision, honoring Latin artists from musical and non-musical entertainment industries. Dancers from the studio are also routinely selected for summer intensives at the Joffrey School of Ballet, Juliard, the Miami City Ballet and Step it Up. Many students who audition, are selected to attend Summerset Academy and Miami Arts Charter, both performing arts schools in South Florida. In honor of their 35th year, Ms. Shari and Dancing Plus will be inviting back all alumni to participate in their annual recital in June, 2015. Many alumni will be sharing the stage with their children who are also dancing at the studio. For more information about Dancing Plus, stop by the studio at 10444 Taft Street or call at 954-431-2334. You can also visit their website www.dancingplus.com.

Sports and asthma By Dr. Shahnaz Fatteh, M.D., Board CertiďŹ ed Asthma, Allergy & Immunology

I

t is fall and the time of year when school sports are in full swing. This season, students will be participating in a variety of sports programs throughout South Florida in schools and community leagues; many will experience symptoms of shortness of breath, chest tightness, cough or wheeze during sports that are unrelated to conditioning. These symptoms may be a sign of Exercise induced Asthma or Exercise induced Bronchospasm. Breathlessness and fatigue can occur when people start an exercise program, but with EIB, symptoms are more persistent and severe and can impact health and performance. Recognition of exercise-induced asthma is important. Symptoms that routinely occur within minutes of the initiation of sports and requiring rest or break from the activity may be a sign of EIB. EIB occurs when there is narrowing of the airways causing bronchial tubes to inflame. This can occur during or after completion of exercise as well. It is important to be aware of the triggers, which can induce these symptoms. Persons with allergies and asthma may be at a higher risk. Cold, dry air, upper respiratory infections, including viral infections, the flu, pollen, cigarette smoke and chlorine can all be triggers. Most often symptoms of EIB occur with sports that cause more aerobic exercise, such as soccer, basketball and track. Your physician can ask a series of questions to help diagnose EIB. One to two puffs of a short acting beta agonist inhaler such as Albuterol may be given 15 minutes before or during exercise to prevent or ease symptoms. Narrowing of the bronchial tubes will be relieved with Albuterol. Peak flow meters can be provided to measure how fast air can be forced out of the lungs. Measurements can be taken with the meter before, during and after exercise and noted in a log.

The log can help your physician create an action plan to treat and prevent symptoms from occurring during sports. Some students, especially in high school sports, have several hours of exercise daily, often with practice on weekends as well. Some may need additional daily or controller medications for relief of symptoms. Spirometry, which is performed in the physician’s office, can be a useful tool to diagnose asthma and also the response to a bronchodilator such as Albuterol. Patients with normal function who have symptoms realized with exercise may need more sophisticated testing including exercise testing, methacholine or cold air challenge. Triggers such as airborne pollen may also require allergy testing. Most importantly, an asthma action plan that clearly outlines for the student, teachers and coaches a step-by-step guideline of medication use should be readily available. Exercise is important for both mental and physical health and well being in a growing child. Being able to enjoy physical activity as a structured sport, or just walking and biking for enjoyment should be achieved without letting asthma get in the way! Talk to your physician and schedule an appointment to get a plan started today. For more information about Exercise Induced Asthma and other allergy concerns, contact Asthma, Allergy Care Center of Florida located in The Fountains Professional Center at 817 S. University Drive, Suite 106, Plantation, FL 33324, (954) 723-0334.

Hal’S PoWeR alleY aT THe bRoWaRD baSeball acaDeMY H

A Hidden Jewel that allows you to train, rain or shine!

as the rainy season got you down because you can’t get your baseball or softball team out to train? Does your team not get enough field or cage time? Or are you just looking for more swings to get that extra edge? Well, there is a solution for all these needs right here in our own back yard. Hal’s Power Alley, a 4,000 square foot, covered hitting facility, sits on the campus of the David Posnack JCC at the corner of Stirling and Pine Island Roads in Davie. It’s operated by Wayne Stofsky’s Broward Baseball Academy and is used for team and individual rentals, private lessons, group instruction, team training, special events, after-school programs and baseball camps. Hal’s Power Alley is open to the public. Wayne Stofsky, who is also the Head Baseball Coach at Cooper City High School, says “Hal’s Power Alley is a major league spring training facility with all the bells and whistles, including pitching machines, hit-down nets, tees and indoor pitching mounds. There is no other structure like it in the area. We use it for our youth teams, our high school team and many college and professional players use it while they’re in town.” Hal’s Power Alley is a memorial named after Hal Rosenberg. Hal was a friend of youth and an integral part of the Cooper City and David Posnack JCC community. His wife Amy, along with sons Eric and Lee, spearheaded this project because of Hal’s love of baseball and the JCC. While Hal’s Power Alley is the jewel of the Broward Baseball Academy, it’s not the only thing open to the public. The facility also includes two lighted fields that are perfect for either baseball or softball teams ages 5 to 14. The fields can be rented daily, weekly or for the season, either for practices or games. They’re perfect for adult softball leagues and in the near future an adult kick-ball league will be starting.

The Broward Baseball Academy (BBA) offers instruction year-round for both boys and girls. Their areas of focus include hitting, fielding and pitching, as well as sports specific strength and conditioning classes for baseball and softball. BBA also offers a Tuesday, after-school class for children ages 5 to 11. This class is perfect for beginners who want to learn the fundamentals of the game. Private lessons are perfect for beginners who want to develop proper technique and for more advanced players, high-level professional instruction is offered to fine tune and enhance skills. BBA also offers special camps on days that Broward County Public Schools are closed. Check their website, www. BrowardBaseballAcademy.com, for more information. BBA will also be starting some elite, travel academy teams, including high school showcase teams in the spring. Just because you have a day off or your season has ended, doesn’t mean you have to stop playing or training. For more information on rentals, camps, classes, lessons or teams, call Wayne Stofsky at (954) 683-7747 or email Wayne@BrowardBaseballAcademy.com.

5Ks, 10Ks and marathons, more than 10,000 Americans have decided that those distances are not far enough. They are participating in ultramarathons, which extend beyond the standard marathon running distance of 26.2 miles. From November 10 – 16, runners of all ages will gather at Snyder Park in Ft. Lauderdale for the Icarus Florida UltraFest, which consists of a six-day race and several smaller ones. They will prove that there are no limits. Most are drawn to the sport by their desire to compete in an event which so few people attempt and even fewer accomplish. It is often a true test of just how far they can push the boundaries of their mental and physical capabilities. After Andrei Nana, event founder and director, completed his first 100-mile race in 2011, he knew that it was just the beginning. “I like the highs and lows of ultramarathons,” said Nana. “During a race, I usually hit the wall several times and always experience a lot of physical pain. When my mind says it does not make sense to keep running, the challenge is to find the strength to finish what I started.” Thus far, Nana has completed 21 ultramarathons. In 2012, he formed the International 100+ UltraRunning Club, which has over 400 members from 34 different countries. Now he is adding the Icarus Florida UltraFest, named after the mythological Icarus which warns us against complacency and hubris, to his list of accomplishments. “This event features much more than just

a six-day race,” said Nana. “The idea was to create an environment where ultrarunners of all levels could experience a top class international ultrarunning event, and be able to run with the six day competitors.” The event includes 13 separate races in total. There are three 24 hour races, each beginning on the first, fourth, and last day of the six-day race. Additionally, on each of those days, there will be a 12-hour, six-hour and three-hour race. “This gives runners the option to choose which event best suits them - a 3, 6, 12 or 24-hour race - and the day in which they would like to run,” said Nana. “Since the six-day race spans the length of the event, any race chosen will be run with the six-day competitors.” According to Nana, there are only 13 other six-day races in existence internationally. With many of them, runners have to deal with local issues, such as dust or altitude. Nana chose to do the race in Ft. Lauderdale, where runners should have ideal conditions. “The location alone should be enough to compel many runners to attend,” said Nana. “The weather should be perfect for some very fast times -- high around 75 degrees and lows in the mid 60s. Flat, completely paved, almost entirely shaded, and just one kilometer in length, the course promises to be fast. In looking at record times for six day races, it seems as if the shorter loop courses are more conducive to faster times.” For more information about Icarus Florida UltraFest, visit www.icarusfloridaultrafest.com or find them on Facebook.

TeaMS UP WITH FeeDINg SoUTH FloRIDa E

ating a nourishing meal is something that many of us take for granted, but did you know that in South Florida, nearly one million people struggle with hunger, one in four children go to bed hungry and one in seven seniors face the choice between paying rent, buying medication or eating a healthy meal? A critical component of a high-quality life is good health, which starts with eating right. Unfortunately, lack of access to healthy and fresh foods is a very real problem that exists right here in our own backyard. Lack of food can lead to serious problems. In children, it can lead to behavioral issues and decreased performance in school, as well as immediate and long-term health complications including diabetes, obesity and high blood pressure. For seniors, lack of food and poor nutrition can lead to memory loss and increased risk of heart disease, osteoporosis and kidney failure. In addition, seniors living on a fixed income are often forced to make the choice between vital medications and groceries. For the second time, Gentle Dental Group is teaming up with Feeding South Florida to help make a difference in the lives of those who struggle to put food on the table. Having collected 2,000 pounds of food in last year’s food drive, Gentle Dental is now on a mission to collect even more food for South Floridians in need. From October 27th through December 4th, Gentle Dental will be collecting nonperishable food items at all of its 26 South Florida dental offices. All of the food collected will be donated to Feeding South Florida for distribution within South Florida communities to families and individuals in need, food pantries, youth programs, senior centers and direct service programs. “We are excited to team up with Feeding South Florida for our second annual Gentle Dental Food Drive to help feed local communities,” explains Christy

Englehart, COO of Northwestern Management. “We want to do our part in the effort to end hunger in South Florida.” Together with Feeding South Florida, media sponsors SFL-TV (CW 19), WSVN (Fox 7), Palm Beach Radio Broadcasting (WRMF-FM 97.9, WIRK-FM 103.1, WEAT 107.9 and WMBX 102.3), Lifestyle Media Group, Life Publications, Sports & Activities Directories, and YOU, we can make a difference. If you would like to donate non-perishable food items at one of the 26 Gentle Dental locations, please visit GentleDentalGroup.com to find an office near you. If you would like to contribute monetarily, you can participate in our virtual food drive found on our website at GentleDentalGroup.com/Feeding-South-Florida. For information on how to volunteer your time, visit FeedingSouthFlorida.org.

The Sagemont School’s New Visual and Performing Arts Center Is Now Open! T

he new Visual and Performing Arts Center at The Sagemont School’s Upper School Campus is open and students couldn’t be more excited. The 10,000 square foot facility features a 150 seat Black Box Theater, two large art rooms and two soundproof music rooms. Dr. Brent Goldman, President of The Sagemont School, said, “The new Visual and Performing Arts Center is a transformational addition to our Upper School Campus. The hundreds of students interested in the arts at our school finally have a home of their own.” Theater instructor, Elizabeth Garrard, expressed that “having a theater venue on campus will give the students many more opportunities.” She continued to explain how the new theater allows for more performances without additional costs from venue rental. Additionally, Garrard mentioned, “Students will be able to explore opportunities in sound, lighting and scenic design as well as stagecraft. Students will also learn the daily operational needs of a theater including business, house and stage management, and publicity.” High school students will continue to produce two full-length productions each year as well as an evening of student directed one-act plays. The Middle School Drama Club will add a one-act play bringing their number of productions up to two. The Lower School students will benefit as well since their Drama Club will produce their spring performance at the Black Box Theater. Art instructors Terrance Clark and Scott Hemeon are also excited about the new possibilities. Clark, the high school art teacher, says, “The students will enjoy a larger studio with more projects and

equipment to work with. A new art room is like a fresh canvas… so many possibilities.” Hemeon, the middle school art teacher, explained that “as an artist, an art teacher and believer in the transformative power of art, it is reassuring to know that Sagemont has dedicated the space, funds and energy to this often under-valued aspect of a comprehensive education and student experience.” Music teachers Matthew Goldberg and Jessica Gronberg are thrilled with their new rooms. Goldberg said, “The new music room will surely enhance my guitar, keyboard, choral and rock band environments by creating an enriching and motivational space for students to thrive. The positive response by the students to the new classroom has been phenomenal. There is more space to perform, more storage for the plethora of guitar cases, and fantastic new equipment to bring our music program to the next level.” Gronberg added, “It is exciting to be able to work out of a classroom that has been built specifically to address the growing needs of our students and our music program.” Furthermore, the Fort Lauderdale Children’s Theatre will offer after school and weekend classes at the Visual and Performing Arts Center. Sagemont will also offer music and art camps next summer. A fundraising gala is set for Saturday November 15th from 7-9:30PM. Tickets are $50 per person. There will be art showings, musical performances as well as character appearances from past productions such as Little Women, CATS and Aladdin. The party will include food vendors, photo booths, popcorn and cappuccino. For more information about The Sagemont School’s Visual and Performing Arts Center and the Gala Event please go to www.sagemont.com/TheArts.

T

hroughout the summer Flamingo Elementary Summer Camp Academy students in grade 3-5 participated in an District wide competition using a program called DimensionU. At the end of summer Flamingo’s top 5 players competed against 8 other Broward Country Schools Summer Camps. The team included Mr. Anderson, Joshua D., TJ H., Trevor B., Neil A. & Camden D. DimensionU is an an incredible, multiplayer education video game series when students in grades 3-9 practice Math and Literacy skills to improve performance. DimensionU games are realistic, robust, 3D multiplayer video games exactly like other video games kids spend hours playing, with one exception: the only way to score points in the game is to answer math or literacy questions. Controlling a lifelike avatar (as opposed to filling out an animated worksheet) engages students, and they will drill themselves on academic skills as they play. The game design rewards players for consistently answering questions accurately, encouraging improvement and prompting students to ask for help with missed questions so they won’t lose points in a future mission. Students are compelled to beat a previous

high score, and to collaborate and compete with other players. The more they play, the better they get—and the better they get, the more engaged they become. All of our students enjoyed playing all summer and as a result Flamingo Elementary Summer Camp Academy won first place. On another note, we have been fortunate recently to introduce the game of chess to our Flamingo students. Research proves playing chess improves students’ social skills, memory, creative thinking, problem solving, and reasoning skills. Mr. Rowan, a senior volunteer in the community was excited to teach Flamingo Elementary students all about chess. He volunteers his time which is approximately eight hours per week to work with students that have various levels of understanding. The students were really excited and often anticipated the scheduled time to play with him. After eight weeks, Flamingo Elementary hosted a chess competition. Camden D., Anthony L. Justin G., and Neil A. pictured with Mrs. Crosby, Flamingo Elementary Principal were the winners of the first competition. The students look forward to more time with Mr. Rowan and additional chess competitions.

College Direct puts students on a direct path to achieve their college and career goals! A

s students start a new school year, they are faced with tougher academic challenges. Along with a more rigorous curriculum and increased testing demands from school districts and the state of Florida, students are stretched to their limit. Add to this the competitive nature of the college admissions process and both students and parents feel overwhelmed not knowing where to turn. This is where College Direct comes in. College Direct is a family owned tutoring and test preparation center established by an educator with more than 30 years of experience in the public school system and 15+ years of experience as a private tutor. Our tutors are certified teachers from the surrounding schools and most have master’s degrees and over 15 years of teaching experience. They are knowledgeable professionals who are up to date with state and national academic standards, learning strategies, and educational trends. Students come to our center for different reasons. Some are a little behind in their coursework and need some “catch up” tutoring; others want to maintain their grades and be “in step” with their class, while some want to be “ahead of the game” and seek enrichment and acceleration opportunities. Whatever their need, we help students succeed. By carefully matching students with experienced tutors and teachers, accommodating

them for their special learning needs, and treating them with respect and sensitivity, we optimize their learning experience. Because each student is unique, we do not apply a one-size-fits-all approach to tutoring. We work with the students’ school curriculum to ensure that they become successful learners with positive images of themselves. Our goal is for students to be college and career ready whether they are in elementary school or are already attending college. Our prices are affordable so that any student who is looking for help can obtain it. We don’t have contracts or minimum purchases so that parents can have the financial flexibility needed in today’s economy. Our open door policy allows communication between the student, parent, tutor, and school to ensure everyone is working together toward the overall benefit of the student. We believe every student should be afforded educational success. The road to college begins at an early age. By providing students with an individualized curriculum and positive support, College Direct prepares them to be successful in their educational pursuits. College Direct is located at 1685 North Hiatus Road in Pembroke Pines. For more information, visit www.college-direct.com or contact us at (754) 400-8941 or at info@college-direct.com.

ife is hectic. I’m a walking billboard that exemplifies that. I am a mom to three children, three schools, three different schedules to handle and then, of course, my own schedule as a full time working parent. Aside from the day to day already tightly packed schedule, I stressfully, but adamantly, make sure to squeeze in time for myself. I know it’s a must… if I don’t have an outlet for some stress relief then nobody is happy. Racing, rolling in the mud and flipping tires are key to my sanity. A few months ago a friend suggested that the high octane fuel I was pumping out in all arenas of my life to feed my superwoman strengths would cause me to crash and burn soon if I didn’t slow down. She suggested I throw yoga in to the mix to balance out my ying and my yang (aka my energy). As a newbie yogi (I’ll call it a no-gee) I began to learn about stretching, balancing and form. At first the class was hard for me. Sitting still for a minute for me always meant wasted time. How could I not be productive for a few minutes? Valuable time was being wasted as I sweat away in Hot Vinyasa. I looked at the clock every few minutes. I studied the people around me doing inversions and birds of whatever type movements and wondered how these skills could effectively be used for a resume. I continued to make to do lists in my head. I wiped buckets of sweat from my brow and counted the minutes to class end. The only thing that kept me

from getting up and leaving was the feeling of failure in front of others and my fierce sense of competition to see it through to the end. After my first session I wanted to throw in my sweat soaked mat, but my friend said keep going…this was exactly what I needed. Flash forward a few months. I continue to practice. I continue to work at letting go of schedules, a desire to run races or be super mom and leap tall buildings in a single bound. Well, at least for an hour and a half each Sunday. When I finally slowed my mind enough to actually listen to the instructor and the messages she delivered, my conversion as a parent began. I have a new mantra. As I learn how to create an inner calm, I learn how to slow my swift reactions. I am a calmer parent. As we stand and balance on one foot, hands brought together over our hearts each Sunday and are told to think of 5 things we are grateful for I am reminded at the start of each week to not take these people or things for granted. These thoughts help to not only remind me to be grateful for my children and what I have in my life, but serve as a reminder to teach them the importance of gratitude in their lives. We are also told to send love, blessings and understanding out to 5 people who need it. Doing so each week has taught me about forgiveness, understanding others and letting go of anger. It’s helped teach me a different perspective about differences and wanting my children to walk through life with this positive outlook, which in turn makes life less complicated and more peaceful. No longer a newbie, I not only have a renewed outlook on life, but on how I parent my children. Namaste.

Nova Debate is Gearing Up

arching bands take the field in fall, brass and percussion marching in step creating precision patterns on the gridiron. Pigskins soar through the air as helmets and pads crash on a Friday night. Fingers fly across computer keyboards as the best and the brightest search for the strongest evidence to support their claims. It is that time of year when young men and women across Broward County begin brushing off their suits, sewing buttons on blazers and polishing up their dress shoes preparing for the upcoming speech and debate season. Nova High School in Davie, Florida is no exception. Nova Debate, historically one of the strongest debate teams in South Florida, is taking preparation very seriously this year as they work to defend their position, tied for first place in the entire nation. President Stephanie Rodgers is leading her teammates to hopefully another successful season. She and more than eighty Nova speech and debate students attended summer debate camps so that they would be ready for the first tournament to be held at Braddock High School in Miami, Florida. “The mantra I keep while preparing for the season and while working during the year is, ‘As much hard work and effort you put into your event is what you are going to get out of it.” Steph is ready to perform in both Interpretation and Original Oratory, two of the speech events that students labor to master. Extemporaneous Speaking is another event that calls for students to polish public speaking skills. In ‘Extemp,’ students study current events and maintain files of articles that cover topics domestic and international, political and economic. Noah Wexler and

Dear Parents,

his squad of news savvy speakers need those files to present seven-minute speeches after only 30 minutes of preparation. Football players gear up in pads, jerseys, and helmets; Nova Debaters don suits, ties, and dress shoes. Both groups of competitors need to be at the top of their games to beat the competition. Nova’s Public Forum debaters are also gearing up. Squad leader Wesley Shattenkirk is excited, not only for his top juniors, but he is also looking for great things from his upcoming sophomores who finished in the top six teams at the novice state tournament last spring. And Nova’s huge Interp squad, led by Zenita Collie, Brooke Berger and Hallie Shlifer, believe that hard work and constant practice are what will drive them to state championships in the Interp events. Nova is also well known for its incredibly successful Congressional Debate team. This year’s seniors, Nasser Douge, Karl Brillant and Alan Chang, are ready to compete in the very political event, which requires students to argue potentially both sides of legislation. Students argue against others from South Florida and the nation, but also build a network of friends throughout the season. This year, Nova Debate is looking forward to a challenging, albeit expensive season. Their toughest task, however, is to raise the funds to enable everyone on their 300 plus member squad. Coaches Lisa Miller and Kate Hamm believe that all students should be able to compete regardless of their families’ income and so they remind all readers of this article to consider donating to Nova Debate.

Florida Standards

Thank you for embracing the role you play in every aspect of your child’s development. With the tireless work of your teachers and educators, Florida students are improving their performance in so many areas, while making Florida a national model in public education. Most importantly, more Florida students are graduating with the tools they need to succeed in college, career and life. As many of you know, your children will have new goals to meet with the adoption of the Florida Standards. Simply put, these standards are the detailed expectations of what every child should be able to do at each grade level. The new standards were developed with unprecedented input from Florida teachers, educators and the public. It is an exciting step. The emphasis with these new standards is for your children to think critically and analytically and go beyond memorization. These new standards will help your child be prepared for success no matter what path they choose after graduation. With these new standards, the FCAT will be replaced next school year with new assessment. Florida students have been learning the new Florida Standards and must have an assessment that aligns to that instruction. I am confident that I have selected an assessment that is the best assessment for Florida students. I am sure many of you will have questions. While your teacher is the best resource for information, we have prepared some answers to frequently asked questions. Please feel free to review that document and our press release announcing this decision at www. fldoe.org/eduaccsummit.asp. Briefly, as I said in our statements to the media, this is the best choice for Florida students. The new assessment will measure each child’s progress and achievement on the Florida Standards. With the high quality instruction provided by our teachers, this tool will give every student the opportunity to be college and career ready.

Your most immediate question may be about what differences your child will see. The scheduled FCAT tests for this year will not be affected. Changes will begin in the 2014-15 school year. The new assessment will include more than just multiple choice or simple fill-in-theblank questions. Students will be asked to create graphs, interact with test content and write and respond in different ways than on traditional tests. New question types will assess students’ higher order thinking skills in keeping with the higher expectations of the Florida Standards. Later this spring, students, educators and parents will be able to preview samples of new question types by taking practice tests that will be made available for anyone interested in reviewing them. The guidelines for promotion and graduation will remain largely the same. Students entering 3rd grade in 2014-2015 will be required to achieve a certain score on the 3rd grade assessment in order to meet promotion requirements. Students not meeting these criteria may still meet promotion requirements through the same exemptions that are currently available. Students entering 10th grade and/or taking Algebra I in 2014-2015 will still be required to achieve a certain score on the respective assessment in order to meet graduation requirements. These students will continue to have the opportunity for retakes all students have had before. Students who need to retake an assessment based on an FCAT 2.0 score will be able to retake the FCAT 2.0. We will continue to provide information to support your efforts. Please share this message and encourage other parents to email us at JustforParents.fldoe.org to continue receiving updates on this and other topics. I look forward to working with you on this truly historic effort to help your children succeed. Thank you for all you do.

Sincerely,

Pam Stewart
