101st edition of the u.s. open cup The 2014 U.S. Open Cup, the 101st edition of the domestic tournament, began on May 7 and features 80 teams, the largest field in the modern era. All U.S. based Division I, II and III teams participate in the tournament proper (16 from MLS, eight from the NASL and 14 from USL PRO), along with 42 amateur teams. The U.S. Open Cup, the oldest annual team tournament in American sports history, has its origins in 1914 and is named after Sporting KC’s original founder Lamar Hunt. The single-elimination tournament will continue through the championship match on Sept. 30 or Oct. 1. Sporting KC are two-time champions in the competition, winning the title in 2004 and 2012. During the MLS era (1996-present), Sporting KC is one of five clubs to win multiple Open Cup championships. The Chicago Fire have four Open Cup titles, D.C. United and the Seattle Sounders each own three, and Sporting KC and the LA Galaxy have won it twice.

GET TO KNOW: portland timbers Timbers turning it around after slow start to 2014

The Portland Timbers failed to win any of their first eight matches of the 2014 MLS season (0-3-5). Since registering their first league victory on May 3, however, Portland has just one defeat in eight games (4-1-3). The Timbers are coming off their most successful MLS campaign in team history, as they won the 2013 Western Conference regular season title with a 14-5-15 record. Caleb Porter won MLS Coach of the Year honors in his first season, leading the club to a notable turnaround season. Compared to 2012 totals, the Timbers earned a 23-point increase in points and an MLS-record 43-goal improvement in goal differential. Portland’s five losses in 2013 were tied for the fewest in MLS history in a 34-game regular season.

Goals galore in Portland

Though Portland ranks second in MLS with 28 goals, the Timbers’ 27 goals allowed are third-most in the league. Goals have been flowing at a rapid pace at Providence Park, where the Timbers have scored and conceded 19 times, both MLS highs. Portland had a league-best 11-1-5 home record in 2013 but has just one win in nine matches (1-1-7) at Providence Park this year.

Strength in offense

The Timbers rank among the league’s top clubs in multiple offensive categories. Portland is second in goals (28), tied for third in assists (21), second in shots (225) and second in shots on goal (82). In addition, no team has scored more goals in the opening 15 minutes (six) or final 15 minutes (10) of MLS matches. Portland has also hit the woodwork 12 times, four more than any other club.

Kansas City to Portland, Portland to Kansas City

Portland has three players on its roster who have played professionally in Kansas City. Most notably, defender Jack Jewsbury spent eight seasons with Kansas City, playing in 208 games from 2003-2010. Jewsbury helped Kansas City win its first U.S. Open Cup title in 2004. Defender Michael Harrington was Sporting KC’s 2007 MLS SuperDraft first round pick and played for the club until 2012, making 154 appearances. Defender Rauwshan played five MLS games for Kansas City from 2008-2009. Conversely, Sporting KC midfielder Lawrence Olum and forward Sal Zizzo had stints with the Timbers before joining their current club. Olum played in Portland from 2007-2008 when the team played in the USL First Division, and Zizzo played with the Timbers from 2011-2013.

Sporting KC took the lead twice in the first half, but the Portland Timbers came away with a 3-2 victory, delivering Sporting KC their first home loss of the 2013 season. Portland again equalized through Darlington Nagbe 12 minutes from halftime, and Rodney Wallace buried the winner just before the hour mark.
