The Houston Dynamo spoiled the first-ever MLS Cup Playoffs game for the Philadelphia Union, coming away with a 2-1 first-leg victory at PPL Park. Even With Union employing a five-man backline that included Stefani Miglioranzi making a rare start as a deep central defender for the first half, the Dynamo took the lead after just six minutes. Set piece maestro Brad Davis, the league’s assist leader, hit a long free kick from the right flank right to the head of Andre Hainault, whose flick put Houston up 1-0. A little more than a minute later, Union found their equalizer. After receiving a beautiful chip pass from rookie Michael Farfan, Philadelphia leading goal-scorer Sebastien Le Toux one-timed a left-footed shot past Houston ’keeper Tally Hall. But the Dynamo retook the lead in the 30th minute. Brian Ching’s nifty through ball found Calen Carr, who stayed onside, burst past the Union backline and slid a shot past Union goalkeeper Faryd Mondragón for the eventual match-winner.

Sporting Kansas City pounced on a hobbled, 10-man Colorado Rapids for a 2-0 victory in the first leg of their semifinal series at Dick's Sporting Goods Park. Teal Bunbury scored both goals for Sporting. First, in the 49th minute, he streaked past a static Rapids back line to gather a feed from midfielder Júlio César before coolly slotting a shot inside the far post past Rapids goalkeeper Matt Pickens. His second goal was doubly as damning for the Rapids. Bunbury once again got past defender Tyrone Marshall into the box before he was pulled to the ground, which saw referee Baldomero Toledo send off Marshall and send Bunbury to the penalty spot. Bunbury buried the ensuing penalty kick in the 59th minute. The Rapids lost striker Caleb Folan (left ankle) and defender Kosuke Kimura (left foot) to injuries in the first half, and were then forced to substitute for defender Drew Moor in the second half due to a right shoulder sprain.

Real Salt Lake controlled the tempo from the outset en route to a 3-0 victory against Seattle Sounders FC in the first leg of their Western Conference semifinal at Rio Tinto Stadium. Álvaro Saborío scored twice on either side of halftime to send RSL on its way. First, in the 41st minute, Saborío provided the final touch to a lovely maneuver as Javier Morales and Chris Wingert advanced down RSL’s left side against Seattle's James Riley. The overlapping Wingert’s cross was headed for the net, but Saborío tapped it in on the goal line as the linesman's flag stayed down. Then in the 53rd minute, a low centering pass from Javier Morales was met by Saborio as he hooked a backheel around defender Jeff Parke and inside the far post. Ned Grabavoy added a potentially vital third in the 88th minute, outhustling the Seattle defense to pound home a rebound from inside the area. Sounders FC did not manage a single shot on goal for the entire match.

The Supporters’ Shield-winning LA Galaxy left Red Bull Arena with a 1-0 victory, defeating the New York Red Bulls in the first leg of their conference semifinal series. The game's lone goal came after 15 minutes, from a well-orchestrated free kick. From well out, David Beckham played the square and hit the return pass first-time over the top as the New York backline stepped forward. Mike Magee beat the offside trap, collected the ball, and fired a left-footed volley past Red Bulls goalkeeper Frank Rost. Galaxy goalkeeper Josh Saunders made five saves on the day, none bigger than in the dying minutes when he dove to his right to block a volley from Rafael Márquez. After the final whistle, Márquez and the Galaxy's Juninho were both sent off by referee Alex Prus following a fracas that boiled over at midfield.

The Colorado Rapids got the game's only goal and once again defeated the Columbus Crew on their home ground in the MLS Cup Playoffs, winning 1-0 in a wild card match played in 32-degree temperatures at Dick's Sporting Goods Park. The game was decided just before halftime on a gorgeous buildup from the Rapids. Omar Cummings got the goal after midfielder Brian Mullan fed defender Kosuke Kimura to the end line, and Kimura coasted a pass back to the Jamaican striker in the box. Cummings pounced with a right-footed shot that left Crew goalkeeper William Hesmer helpless, and gave the Rapids all the offense they needed. The Rapids suffered a blow late in the game when Jamie Smith, who paired with Jeff Larentowicz in the midfield in the absence of injured captain Pablo Mastroeni, was stretchered off the field with what later turned out to be a torn ACL in his right knee. It was a third consecutive season where the Rapids defeated the Crew 1-0 in Commerce City to open the postseason.

CAUTIONS Ihemelu 31 (Reckless Tackle) Hernandez 51 (Reckless Tackle)

The New York Red Bulls played the final quarter of the match with 10 men but survived to emerge 2-0 victors over FC Dallas in a wild card match at Pizza Hut Park. Joel Lindpere put the Red Bulls ahead. He put a hard shot on target that forced FCD 'keeper Kevin Hartman into a nice diving save. Dane Richards collected the rebound on the right side and got it to Mehdi Ballouchy, who crossed it back into the box for Lindpere to slot under Hartman. The Red Bulls went down to 10 men with about 10 minutes to go when Jan Gunnar Solli slid in hard from behind on Daniel Hernandez and was sent off by referee Ricardo Salazar. In stoppage time, with FC Dallas completely committed in the Red Bulls' half of the field, Thierry Henry pounced on a long ball and marched towards goal. He failed to knock in his first shot but succeeded in his attempt off the rebound.

SPORTING KANSAS CITY NEWS, NOTES AND HEADLINES HOME FIELD ADVANTAGE | After previously winning the Western Conference in 1997, 2000 and 2004, Sporting Kansas City’s first place finish in the Eastern Conference this season earns the distinction of becoming the first team to finish atop the Eastern and Western Conferences in MLS regular season history.

season with an MLS record 10-game road trip while awaiting the opening of LIVESTRONG Sporting Park. Despite going 1-6-3 over the stretch, Sporting Kansas City recorded a club-record and 2011 League-best 14-game unbeaten run from May to August and the team has lost only three times in their past 26 MLS matches.

As the top seed in the Eastern Conference, Sporting Kansas City will have home field advantage throughout the 2011 MLS Cup Playoffs at LIVESTRONG Sporting Park. Sporting Kansas City went 9-2-6 at home in MLS matches during the inaugural season at LIVESTRONG Sporting Park in 2011, accumulating the most points at home (33) since the team’s historic 2000 season in which the club won both the Supporters Shield and MLS Cup.

In last place in the Eastern Conference as late as their 0-0 draw at Philadelphia on June 22nd, Sporting KC finished in first place in the East following a 1-0 win at D.C. in their regular season finale.

In postseason play, Sporting Kansas City have lost only twice in regulation in 16 all-time home matches, with the most recent loss coming 3-0 at the hands of the Colorado Rapids on October 4, 1997 at Arrowhead Stadium. Sporting KC have outscored opponents 29-13 at home in the postseason. SAPONG FOR ROOKIE OF THE YEAR? | Sporting Kansas City striker C.J. Sapong led all MLS rookies in goals scored (5), assists (5) and games played (34) during the 2011 MLS regular season. He was the only Sporting Kansas City player to appear in every regular season MLS match this season and sets a new single-season club mark for most games played. The Manassas, Virginia native scored Sporting Kansas City’s first goal of the 2011 MLS season less than two minutes into his professional debut. The 2011 MLS SuperDraft first round pick also scored the first-ever MLS goal at LIVESTRONG Sporting Park. HISTORIC TURNAROUND | Sporting Kansas City began the 2011

GOALS GALORE | Sporting’s 50 goals in 2011, the second most scored in a single season by the club in the last 14 years, tied for the second most in MLS this season behind the Seattle Sounders FC (56). Strikers Teal Bunbury, Omar Bravo and Kei Kamara each led the team with nine goals scored this season, while no other club in MLS had three players with eight or more goals this season. Having allowed 40 goals during the regular season, Sporting Kansas City’s +10 goal differential was the best in the Eastern Conference this year. Further, after scoring 36 goals in 2010, Sporting Kansas City’s +14 increase from last year’s offensive output is the third largest increase by any MLS team from last season. NIELSEN IN NET | Sporting KC goalkeeper Jimmy Nielsen, named the team’s 2011 Most Valuable Player, recorded seven clean sheets and 12 wins in 2011, tied for the fourth most among MLS goalkeepers. He won Major League Soccer’s Save of the Week honor four times, second only to Kasey Keller’s six. The Danish native posted a 1.14 goals against average in 2011, the third-best single-season mark in club history, which improves his career goals against average to 1.15, best among all goalkeepers in club history with at least 4,000 minutes played.

COLORADO RAPIDS vs. SPORTING KANSAS CITY The Colorado Rapids fell 2-0 to Sporting Kansas City on Sunday night in the first leg of the Eastern Conference Semifinals. The team with the most total goals over the two matches will advance to the Conference Final, and if score is tied after both games, the series would be decided in either overtime or penalty kicks. If Colorado advances, they will play the winner of the series between Houston Dynamo and Philadelphia Union on Sunday for the Eastern Conference Championship. During the 2011 regular season, the Rapids tied 1-1 with Sporting twice, once at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park and once at LIVESTRONG Sporting Park. The last two times Colorado lost the opening game of a playoff series (2-1 on Oct. 21, 2006 and 4-2 on Sept. 25, 2002 to FC Dallas), they went on the road and won to advance.
