Every year the National 2yo Sale presents dilemmas. A vast number of entries – too many for most to inspect individually. Many are 2yo’s who for some reason didn’t appear on the major yearling sales earlier in the year – late developers, often, but mostly pedigrees which didn’t quite make it. In the latter category you’ll find the progeny of young, unproven mares, many very well related through highclass dams and/or siblings – but themselves not quite there. For buyers it means having to take chances on the paper evidence, or purely going by physical appearance. It’s a tough task to sort wheat from chaff.

Sire x Broodmare Sire combo’s explored Any sire x broodmare sire combo covers three-quarters of a horse’s pedigree. Plenty enough for some buyers to put their faith in. Sometimes such crosses can even be picked up early, before conventional wisdom takes hold and prices go up. There are eighteen sires represented at the 2yo sale who have stakes winners bred on the same cross with broodmare sires of lots on offer. The sires are listed below in alphabetical order. Mostly the numbers are small, so there’s a chance the success was merely coincidence. In some cases, though, the evidence looks compelling. Judge for yourself.

The leading sires are represented, of course, but not in great number. New sires, or those with just one crop racing so as yet unproven, Black Minnaloushe make up a sizeable chunk of the sale. What a year it has been. Following the 2yo champion colt title of KochDams of the youngsters are another story ka in 2013, two new 3yo Gr1 winners emerged from that same crop: Triple Crown hero Louis The King and SA Oaks winner Ash Cloud. – there are fewer with winning black type Elliodor (12r/6w/1sw) he got Champion 2yo Kochka, unraced at 3 because than at other sale, or with black type winning ofWith injury. Kochka won a Gr1 and was Gr1 second, with MR 111 at 2. There are two on offer here. A half sister (#349) to Gr2 placed stakes winner White Mischief and progeny. What we do know, though, is that if stakes winner Miss Mischief, consigned by Varsfontein. A half brother to three winners they’ve done it once, they can do it again. (#509) out of Oaks winner Time Piece, the mare a full sister to Super Quality, winner of the July and of the Cape & SA Derby double. The colt is consigned by Highlands. So here are two researched stories: one With Spectrum (2r/2w/1sw) he got Felix The Cat, twice Gr1 runner-up and Gr3 about the 2yo’s with bold black type dams placed, and unfortunate perhaps to have been in the same crop as Princess Victoria. The other winner from the cross is stakes winner Tibouchina. Two tries, both black and/or siblings, the other about sire x type. One on offer here. A filly (#117), first foal of multiple winning miler Colour Fast broodmare sire crosses that have produced who is half sister to Champion Consensual, to Gr2 winner Dance Along and to the of Gr1 Allan Robertson winner Give Me Five. The youngster is from the female black type. That might make life a little easier. dam line of Gr1 In Camera, and consigned by Varsfontein. Black type. Sales catalogues are full of it. Buyers take it for granted that bold black type in caps is better than in upper and lower case, and that Gr1 is better than Gr2, or Gr3 and Listed. It’s all rather misleading, though.

Buyer’s Guide for every major sale, where dams and all their progeny are shown for what they are. It’s a great guide for buyer’s (and breeders) who prefer truth over hype.

Below is an extract Earning Black type of the Buyer’s Guide depends on who you race for the 2yo sale (it can against and under what be found in its entirety conditions, a once-off on the website). We measure. Black type is earned in black looked specifically at type races, where conditions dams who have bold Ratings are independent, can vary greatly. Handicaps, (winning) black type, an accumulation of conditions races, very few on or have black type performance, level terms. (winning) offspring. much more informative. Races can be true run, or false To make it a bit more run. It all depends who you race interesting, they have been grouped by the sires of against, and it certainly isn’t the 2yo’s on offer. We show Sporting Post’s ability always the best horses that ratings for all, by distance category (from sprint to earn black type. stamina), and name the winning black type earned In this context, ability ratings are a much where applicable. Broadly speaking, winning black more reliable indicator of who’s good, type requires a rating in the mid-nineties or more. and who’s not. Sporting Post publishes a Black type or black hype? Noordhoek Flyer

Foreign female lines are becoming more and more visible in South African pedigrees, this despite the weak Rand and the expense of importing good stuff. This widening of the genepool will no doubt have a big ripple effect in decades to come, the more so when interesting matings are done (or have been done). A trawl through the 2yo sale catalogue already makes for a nice catch. Here are some examples of fillies who might find their way into future pedigrees as broodmares.

Tiger Ridge #266 filly, first foal; dam (won in UK - 44/74/77/-/-) Here’s a pedigree awash with that most famous of all ancestors, La Troienne. Fourth dam Never Hula is by Never Bend out of Hula Hula. The altter is a daughter of Black Helen (Black Toney x La Troienne), while Never Bend’s grandam Be Faithful is by Bimelech, a full brother to Black Helen. On to second dam No Knocks, who is by AP Indy, a son of Seattle Slew, whose dam is inbred to La Troienne. Added to that, AP Indy’s grandam Lassie Dear is by Buckpasser, who has La Troienne as his third dam.

Now we have five lines of La Troienne. On to the dam of the 2yo filly, who is by More Than Ready. That sire’s dam Woodman’s Girl is by Woodman, whose dam is by Buckpasser and from the La Troienne female line. Woodman Girl’s dam is from the La Troienne female line as well, and carries a double of La T. Now we have a background of ancestors inbred to La Troienne, giving nine lines in all. Bring on the 2yo’s sire Tiger Ridge, who is half brother to AP Indy. That adds another Buckpasser, and brings the La T. tally to ten. The perfect ten? Time will tell.

AP Indy (sire of sires in SA) and his grandam Lassie Dear (dam of Al Mufti, who sired Captain Al) should be running rampant in South African bloodlines for a long time to come.

Ideal World #296 filly, first foal; dam (-/39/-/-/-) full sister to Gr2 placed Gr3 winner Queen’s Bay and to the dam of Gr1 SA Derby winner BouquetGarni. This is a famous female line, the 2yo filly’s fourth dam a half sister to Northern Dancer, and the third dam a half sister to the dam of Danehill. Bring on the 2yo’s sire Ideal World, a son of the mare Banks Hill. That mare is a multiple Champion, rated 126. Not only that, but also a full sister to successful sire Dansili (rated 127), G1 winners & champions Intercontinental (122) and Champs Elysees (124) and G1 winner Cacique (122). All of them sired by Danehill! In a nutshell, here’s a pedigree brimful of famous broodmares: Natalma (ancestress of Northern Dancer and Danehill), Hasili (dam of Banks Hill et al), Fall Aspen (dam of the 2yo’s damsire Fort Wood), and Miesque (dam of Ideal World’s sire Kingmambo). All of these lines well represented through sires and future sires in South Africa.

Breeders of International Winners

Gr1 2nd Sanshaawes (2014); Gr3 Lucky Find (2010) - both Dubai World Cup runners

LATERAL

#173 filly Fiesta ex Festive Event

first foal; dam (2w) is half sister to 2 other multiple winners, from family of VON SPEE (12w, SW; Gr1/2/3 placed) “ from the same female line as LATERAL”

#269 filly Picobello ex Kessy half sister to a winner; dam is out of winning half sister to Leopold (5w, SP) and six other winners “from famous German female line”

Dynasty #354 filly; dam (won in UK; -/70/78/-/-) half sister to once-raced dam of stakes placed (in UK) Italian SW miler Carioca (rated 107) and Gr2/Gr3 placed (in UK) miler Irony (rated 102); grandam Secret Sunday is winning full sister to 2000 Guineas winner Mystiko and half sister to dam of Irish champion 2yo Basim. Now here’s a great example of a modest winning mare (Secret Sunday, full sister to an English Guineas winner), with two modest daughters (Mystic Spring and Cydaris, by different sires) who both go on to produce graded stakes performers (from a variety of sires). And the black type sequence continues with the next generation. There’s another 2yo from the family at his sale, a colt by Mullins Bay (#332) out of a Meezah (87/84/-/-/-), who is half sister to the Dynasty 2yo filly and full sister to Secret Of Victoria (dam of All Is Secret). Meezah and her full sister are by Goldkeeper, whose dam is 3-part sister to Royal Academy – giving 2x2 kin-breeding to the 3-part siblings. This is also the female line of Storm Cat, so sending Meezah (or her full sister Secret Of Victoria) to a Storm Cat sire would be an interesting move.

#413 filly, 2nd foal; dam (-/74/72/74/59) won over 1900 as a 2yo, and is out of Damask Rose, a stakes placed stayer in UK (rated 99) and half sister to Grwinnign stayers in France & UK (incl Gold Cup winner Double Trigger). The next dam is half sister to Sirlad (Gr1 in USA, Italian Derby) and Sortingo (Gr1 in Italy, Italian Derby 2nd). Staying blood aplenty, generation after generation. It seems to have started with Italian Oaks winner Soragna (the 4th dam of the 2yo filly on offer), who as a remarkable pedigree. Her sire Orvieto is a grandson of Arc-winner Ortello. Orvieto’s third dam Olba is a half sister to Ortello. Then Soregna’s female line. Her grandam Sernaglia is by Orsenigo, whose dam is full sister to the grandam of Orvieto, both out of the mare Olba. Sernaglia’s dam is out of a mare by Ortello. In brief, Oaks winning Soragna is by Orvieto (inbred through brother and half sister), and has a grandam who is inbred to the same combination. There is more close kinbreeding. Gold Cup winner Double Trigger is by ElaMana-Mou, whose grandam is close kin to the dam of Diesis – who is sire of Rose Of Damascus (dam of the 2yo filly on offer). Along comes the 2yo’s sire Noordhoek Flyer, whose dam is by Kris – the full brother to Diesis. Noordhoek Flyer (82/103/93/103/-) finished a good second in the Cape Derby, so chances are real that this 2yo filly will stay at least 2000m.

An addendum to the catalogue is that a half brother to dam Rose Of Damascus, Double Bluff (by Azamour), is an 1800m winner at 2, and stakes placed in UK this year over 2200m, with his highest rating (105) achieved over 2400m at the end of July at Ascot, after trying to make all the running. Stamina again, then.

Ashaawes #421 filly, 3rd foal; dam (42/54/64/-/-) Irish bred half sister to winners over 2400m and more in UK & France, including Before You Go (rated 105; by Sadler’s Wells). The 2yo filly is by Ashaawes, who is by Kingmambo out of Miesque by Nureyev. The grandam of the 2yo filly is half sister to champion miler Spinning World (by Nureyev), to French Gr3 winner Rangoon Ruby (by Kingmambo, and dam of Sagara, rated 124, by Sadler’s Wells), to Visions Of Clarity (by Sadler’s Wells and dam of Gr1 winner and now sire in SA, Pathfork). The third dam of the 2yo filly, Imperfect Circle, is half sister to Gr1 race filly Chimes Of Freedom. The latter got Gr1 winner Good Journey (by Nureyev), and Gr3 winner Sea Of Showers (by Seattle Slew, also damsire of Ashaawes), dam in turn of KZN-sire Atso (by Kingmambo). Further back, the famous matron Best In Show, dam of Northern Guest in SA, and direct ancestor of Gr1 producing stallions all over the world.

Mystic Spring (by Royal Academy); dam of |RABIYA – 2x Gr1; Champion |SECRET OF VICTORIA – 2x Gr2, Gr1 placed; dam of | ALL IS SECRET – 3x Gr1; Champion |SPRING LILAC – Gr3; dam of | VICTORIAN SECRET – SW; Gr2 placed |RAFIYA – SW |TOUCH THE SKY – SW; 2x Gr1 placed |Lot 354 – 2yo Dynasty filly
