INDUSTRY NEWS THE DUCATI DIAVEL 1260 Production of the second generation Italian power cruiser has begun. The Ducati Diavel made its debut in 2010. Ever it since the Diavel the road, the bike has turned heads and impressed riders from all walks of life. Powered by a Testastretta DVT 1262 engine, the Diavel 1260 is equipped with a comprehensive electronic package that includes Bosch cornering ABS and engine performance control. A 17-inch rear wheel is paired with a 240mm wide tire. The S model of the Diavel 1260 comes with Ohlins suspension, quick shifter, model specific wheels, and an upgraded braking system. Color options include Sandstone Grey for the standard model, Sandstone Grey or Thrilling Black and Dark Stealth for the S model.

THE SUZUKI GSX-1300R HAYABUSA LIVES ON

Recently, the internet and social media were abuzz with rumors that Suzuki was ending the run of their flagship hyperbike, the Suzuki GSX-1300R Hayabusa. SBI reached out to Suzuki Motor of America during the storm of rumors and allegations for a comment or clarification. We were told to sit tight, as an official statement would soon arrive. Today, Suzuki issued a press release confirming that US production of the Hayabusa would continue. In fact, dealer orders for the 2019

Hayabusa have already been received by Suzuki. The statement also clarified that it is the production of European specification Hayabusa models that have been discontinued because of Euro 4 emission regulations. That missing detail designating that the "Euro-spec" version of the Hayabusa will no longer be produced sent the bike world into a tizzy. So, to recap: US production of the Suzuki GSX-1300R continues, uninterrupted. Euro spec production of the Suzuki GSX-1300R is discontinued.

AIMEXPO HEADS BACK TO OHIO IN 2019 The 2018 American International Motorcycle Expo in Las Vegas hosted more than 7,000 dealers, media members, industry and attendees, over the four-day event. This attendance was a 17 percent increase over the prior year’s Expo. There were over 500 exhibitors on the show floor showcasing their products to eager eyes that traveled from all across the country. For 2019, the AIMExpo will return to Columbus, Ohio’s Greater Columbus Convention Center, beginning on September 26 and run through to September 29. Columbus is a densely populated with motor and powersport enthusiasts and neighbors the home of the AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame, located in Pickerington, Ohio. MOTO GUZZI’S 2019 V85 TT “TT” is an acronym for tutto terreno which translates into “all terrain”. The new V85 TT takes that mission seriously as a multipurpose, all-terrain motorcycle. The V85 TT is designed as a capable machine that will perform in a variety of riding conditions powered by an air-cooled transverse 90 degree, 2 valves per cylinder, V twin engine. The bike is available in both

a standard TT ($11,990) and a TT Adventure model ($12,990). Moto Guzzi has launched a preorder website portal and will The V85 is now available for pre-orders via a web portal. SUZUKI OFFERED FREE PICK UP AND DELIVERY SERVICES TO COMPLETE RECALL SERVICES Suzuki issued a recall for the GSX-R600 and 750, model year 2004 through 201 and GSX-R1000 model year 2005 through 2013 for issues related to the front brake master cylinder. To complete the recall, Suzuki has added the incentive of a free pickup and delivery service for owners of affected vehicles. Suzuki arranged for a local dealership to transport the bike from the owner’s location to the dealership for the completion of the recall service. Eligible customers received $100.00 prepaid Visa gift card after the service is completed. THE 300CC MOTORCYCLE

class suffers from an epidemic that I call “300ism”. The first hurdle is the fact that a 300 looks like a 300. Visually, that is hard to shake, regardless of the bike's performance specifications. Psychologically, it’s over before it began. We have all heard the stories that tell the tale of the new rider that buys a 300 as a beginner or starter bike. Said bike is quickly mastered and the rider, perhaps now considered an intermediate rider is looking for their next challenge which is any biker larger than a 300. This reality is a result of several factors. Boredom sets in as they may be in search of higher speeds or greater performance. However, there is one common dominator. They want something, anything that does not look like a 300. It is rare to see a 300 rolling in the streets, back roads or on the highway. You may see a 300 at your local track bringing the heat, usually by an experienced advanced rider that understands the joys of the 300 through the turns and chicanes. THE FIRST RIDE: YAMAHA 2019 YZF-R3 ends when, before long, the starter or beginner bike finds its place in the garage waiting to be passed on to or sold to the next rider that is starting out. 300ism strikes again. When it first introduced in 2015, the first generation of the Yamaha YZF-R3 looked every bit like a 300, held by the characteristics of its class: raised handlebars, primary data cluster, standard presence with a standard level of appeal. There was nothing special about the R3 that made it stand out among its peers. Enter the 2019 YZF-R3. Finally, a 321cc machine that looks more like a middle-class sportbike and less like a 300. The 2019 R3 is the second generation of the model with extreme differences in appearance, handling, and performance, compared the first generation. Grabbing cues from its older siblings, the YZF-R6, YZF-R1, and the YZR-M1 the 2019 R3 takes a sporty approach to its appearance. The entire design of the R3 has been overhauled, and it now looks like a member of the YZF family, finally. Let's start with the new front end where the fairing and windscreen have been redesigned to reduce wind drag and increase air induction. Borrowing a bit from their MotoGP M1 machine, both the front cowl and the new fuel tank provide progressive functionality. Improved aerodynamics and air flow results in improved speeds. The visual improvements continue from there with modern overall optical line work that escapes the deadly loom of 300ism. The 2019 YZF-R3 not only looks like a sportbike, but it also rides like one. The 2019 YZF-R3 takes a giant leap forward with its new 37mm upside down forks and adjustable rear shock. Yamaha increased the front end spring rate on the 2019 R3 from 12.9N/mm to 15.6N/mm, an increase of 20 percent. The spring rate on the 7 step adjustable rear shock has been increased from 161N/mm to 179N/ mm, an improvement of 11 percent. This math 26 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM |JANUARY 2019

THE FIRST RIDE: YAMAHA 2019 YZF-R3 translates into a deeply appreciated upgrade in handling and stability. From the point of acceleration, braking and tipping into the turn before rolling back on the throttle, the YZF-R3’s suspension setup offers the stability that breeds confidence. That confidence translates into mass amounts of fun. That’s important to note. The amount of fun contained within the 2019 R3 is more than considerable. It is refreshing. A complaint heard among owners of said beginner bikes is that once they have mastered the motorcycle, they no longer find the bike fun. That is understandable to an extent. Limited features coupled with limited performance will put a hindrance on the fun time. The 2019 R3 is loaded with features that make it rider friendly, maintaining the level of excitement that we as motorcyclists look for in our machines. When I initially threw a leg over the 2019 R3, in the company of other journalists, the whispers of “Big man, little bike…” rattled about the garage, all in good spirit. However, it did raise a topic. How was the R3 going to respond to my above standard weight and size? I was, indeed, a big man mounting a little bike. When I rested in the saddle, with feet flat on the ground, I appreciated that amount of room that remained between the tail section, myself and the tank. There wasn’t a lot of room, but still, there was room. I was comfortable, not bunched up as if I was trying to squeeze myself into a tracksuit that was three sizes too small. A newly designed fuel tank enhances the ergonomics as it is 20mm lower at the cap and 31.4 mm wider, just above the knee than the first generation R3. That width comes into action when leaning over allowing a location for locking your knee into position while transitioning through the curve or turn. One of my favorite updates of this second generation R3 is the placement of the handlebars. top tree, 22mm lower than the previous model years. In riding position, the installation of the bars lend toward an aggressive riding stance, not too mention that they look badass. If the ergonomics of the R3 are accommodating to a rider of my specifications, then the consideration of comfort should run across the spectrum. The question that remained was, how was this bike going to perform while hauling my 260 plus pound ass around the canyons of Southern California? To answer that, I hit the road for some seat time and evaluations. First gear is short, so I clicked into second, almost immediately. I consider second through forth the R3's working gears. Fifth and sixth are more overdrive gears and actively come into play at highway speeds. But in the canyons and twisties, it was all about the middle gears. The R3’s engine is a liquidcooled parallel twin cylinder with an output of 321cc’s. Equipped with new radial Dunlop Sportmax GPR-300 tires, I squeezed every bit out of that 321cc engine and had an exhilarating time. Through the sweepers, the straights and the twisties, the level of excitement remained on high, a direct result of the R3’s suspension setup, engine output, and ergonomics. Again, comfort was a major concern. But after a full day spent on the bike, and after 150 miles through slightly varied weather conditions and proper elevation changes, I felt fine. No cramps, no tightness. I felt unencumbered, free and relaxed. That says a lot for a rider of my dimensions. I mentioned earlier how the 2019 R3 had taken cues from is its older siblings regarding style and appearance, namely the front cowl, the styling of the fuel tank, the new LED head and tail lights, and so on. Yamaha made a significant decision to upgrade the data cluster of the R3 and give it a “grown-up” look and feel while improving its functionality. THE FIRST RIDE: YAMAHA 2019 YZF-R3 LCD meter is inspired and resembles the Yamaha YZR-M1 machine of Valentino Rossi. The new digital data center for the for R3 displays speed, RPM’s, gear indicator, shift light, fuel gauge, clock, and shift-light, to name a few data items. The 2019 YZF-R3 is a realization of the collective understanding of what is being asked of the motorcycle by today’s rider, regardless of riding level. Priced at $4999 for the base model and $5,299 for the ABS version, for the beginner, this R3 is both rider and wallet-friendly. The bike is supportive of the early stages of learning to ride while invoking confidence and excitement. For the intermediate rider to the advanced, the 2019 R3 offers a significant amount of performance and appeal that makes it tough to keep that grin underneath your lid from bursting out. Most importantly, the R3 looks the part: sexy and grown yet aggressive and sporty. Yamaha also offers a catalog of optional upgrades to enhance further the performance and visuals of the second generation R3 that clears it from the pandemic of 300ism. Yamaha has done their homework, and it shows. The 2019 Yamaha YZF-R3 has carefully and very strategically carved its path to a classification, all its own.

JOSH HERRIN IS A FACTORY RIDER, ONCE AGAIN! The 2013 AMA Superbike Champion, Josh Herrin has been recruited by the Yoshimura Suzuki team to pilot the Suzuki GSX-R1000 for the 2019 MotoAmerica Superbike series. Herrin joins the 2018 MotoAmerica Superbike Champion, Toni Elias, gaining the recently vacated seat of the retired Roger Lee Hayden. “It’s been a goal of mine to get back on a factory team since I won the Superbike championship in 2013. I feel honored to now be a part of Yoshimura Suzuki with its long tradition of winning. I look forward to working side by side with Toni and the rest of the team. We’ll both be working towards the common goal of making the 2019 Yoshimura Suzuki GSX-R1000 into a championship winner.” - Josh Herrin.

THE PRESS ROOM: GRID NEWS NICKY HAYDEN’S #69 WILL BE OFFICIALLY RETIRED

The late and great Nicky Hayden’s race number, “69” will be officially retired from Grand Prix racing in a ceremony at MotoGP Red Bull Grand Prix of the Americas in April of 2019. Hayden, who passed away in 2017, captured the MotoGP crown in 2006, where he continued to race until 2015 before transitioning to the World Superbike paddock. Hayden, a member of the AMA Hall of Fame and a MotoGP Legend, has made a significant impact on the entire industry and a lasting impression since his untimely departure. It is a fitting tribute that 69 will forever remain Hayden’s number. Injured most of his rookie season put Rins behind the Eight-ball but he came out swinging his Sophomore season. Five podiums, with a style so smooth riders don’t even realize he’s there until he’s passed them. Rins has Suzuki licking their chops as he finished his final GP second and looks to be a serious title contender in 2019.

Despite the airbag in his suit deploying! Whatever you do, watch this moment over and over again to appreciate the awesomeness of this moment!

GRAN PREMIO MOTUL DE LA REPÚBLICA ARGENTINA The question asked here is what didn’t this race have? You had Jack Miller literally starting no less than half a straightaway ahead of the nearest bike. Marquez stalled his bike at the start, going the wrong way on the grid, having a ride thru penalty, literally "bowling balled” the entire race grid. This GP had to be seen to be believed.

JORGE LORENZO AND VALENTINO ROSSI First of all, I know its hard to believe that Marc Marquez doesn’t win this category, but... When you see this save, you’ll understand why. Again, Assen was the round for this incredible moment. Lorenzo’s loses the front for a second and Valentino Rossi Nails him in the rear end at 190km/hr, and both somehow manage to keep their bikes upright and continue the race! This could’ve indeed resulted in disaster for both, But through the grace of the MotoGP Gods, both were okay!

"The Ice Man Cometh” Award (Rider of The Year):

MARC MARQUEZ

This choice was about as easy as the Russians hacking into the U.S. elections! Marquez was head and shoulders above his competition this year which in itself was one of the stiffest classes in MotoGP history! He had to deal with Dovi, a reenergized Lorenzo and a very consistent Valentino Rossi who, until the very end was in contention for runner-up in the championship! What Marquez had to deal with to become Champion was a list of “what can go wrong, now.” He had to deal with a separated shoulder, being penalized three times in the same race, a very hostile Yamaha paddock, etc. Can you guess which side of the garage it came from? And again, the best grid of riders to ever race in MotoGP! No less than twenty world championships were lined up every single weekend, and Marquez beat them all! The scary thing about all of this is that Marquez is still learning. Because of how close Dovi was to taking the championship away from him last year, Marquez studied Dovi in the offseason to find out how this was possible and that paid off in Thailand when he beat Dovi at this own game! MotoGP gets better every year and next year seems to be the cream of the crop. Don’t be surprised to see Marquez atop of the championship podium once again for number eight. , I’m not about to lecture you about having a parent present for safety. I am about to share why I feel that it is so important to create that bond riding together. My dad has been into motorsports since he was young, so of course, when he was in the delivery room and out came a baby girl, he knew he was going to embed motorsports into my brain, and guess what, it worked! As I grew up, I spent most of my time getting to miss school and spent my day’s at the track. I know what you’re thinking… bad parenting, but it was the opposite, considering I turned out pretty good! There was nothing like being at the track, watching my dad rip everyone to shreds JANUARY 2019 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM | 91

Years went by traveling everywhere with my dad, and he finally started putting me in go-karts and surprised me with my first quad, so I can rip around the trails while he was racing. He took me for a practice run, so he felt safe leaving me unsupervised, and I gave him quite a scare, a good scare that is. I hit the throttle and wheelied my first time. He was upset for a few seconds, like any parent would be, but then he was so proud that I was capable of doing that on my first try. When it came to karting, I was hooked. I absolutely loved it and felt quite like a little badass. I regretfully didn’t get into it professionally, considering that was a lifestyle that didn’t consist of hanging out with friends as much as a young girl wanted, but when I did go out and do it for

fun, I let the boys eat my dust. As I got older, I wanted to do motocross. So of course, like the great dad he is, he got me my first dirt bike and took me to the tracks as much as he could. I loved it, but I didn’t get to do it so often considering where we lived. We lived in the suburbs of Hollywood, Florida, which didn't consist of any dirt tracks nearby, especially back then. We would have to drive hours, past Seminole Reservations to a track. The track was pretty basic, but it worked for me! Once I turned 14, I wanted a motorcycle, but JANUARY 2019 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM | 93

my dad said I had to wait until I was 16, then changed his mind to 18. The day I turned 18, I told him I’m ready and signed up for the course. Took the course, passed it with flying colors, went to the DMV and got my endorsement. My dad was so kind enough to surprise me with a 696 Monster, and I was stoked as any teenager would be. Considering he does own Shift-Tech Carbon, he covered it in carbon, and I was not complaining. I was definitely the coolest teenager in town. For a while, I could only ride with my dad, and at first I was upset, but later on, I realized that I am so lucky to have a dad who had a passion for motorcycles and passed it on to me. We rode so much together, and it’s the best feeling. There were many special times, and I could be here all day telling you all about it, but there was this specific time I feel like I should share with you. I was invited to the Arai press launch in Daytona Beach to test the Defiant-X, and Classic-V helmets and my father accompanied me. I have never seen my dad so happy. He has never tried flat track and was able to that day. Coaching the riders were Johnny Lewis and Josh Hayes, who were able to give every pointer needed. My dad went out there and killed it. To go out there for our first time together was such a peculiar feeling. That day, I will never forget. I will always remember the smile he had on his face, and I thank Arai America’s for giving us the opportunity to experience that together. To this day, we still ride together. There is nothing like the bond we have, and every single person should be able to share what we have with their own parent. I now challenge you, if you haven’t already, to go out there, get your mom, dad, stepmother, stepdad or whomever and get riding! Appreciate every minute you can doing something you love together. into turn two at New Hampshire Motor Speedway, I came across a rider who was about a second or so ahead of me. It was too late for me to make a pass before the apex so I decided to try to drive by him on the way out. As we made our major bar input before the apex, I noticed that he was carrying excellent mid-corner speed and wondered if this was going to be an easy pass to make. Our lines all the way through the corner were nearly identical, with the only difference being that his "apex" was a few feet wider than mine. My knee was over the curbing on the inside of the corner, and his head was just outside the curbing at the same point. We both picked up the throttle at the same time, but about 50 feet after the apex (when I started my normal increase in the rate of throttle roll on) I surprisingly shot right by this rider on the inside. The two major factors that hold riders back on the way out of the corner are running out of traction (high-siding) and running out of racetrack on the outside. When I talked to this rider later in the day, he confirmed that it was the latter of these two factors that kept him from getting his throttle wide open. He had a good feel for how hard he could drive at full lean, as evidenced by his solid performance with his initial drive. However, he was having trouble finishing the corner, and his track location at the apex was the culprit. If you have ever watched MotoGP or World Superbike you know that these riders use every inch of the racetrack on the exits that lead to long straights, often including the brightly painted exit curbing as well. In the instances where this curbing is both smooth and coated with the appropriate high traction paint, these riders ride over the same area inside of the racetrack as well. This strategy takes advantage of the basic principle used by every track rider in the world, which states that the larger the radius of the corner, the faster the motorcycle can travel through it. The increase in lean angle will move the wheels further away from your present reference point but also brings hard parts closer to the ground. Developing the skill to use all of the track is a significant step for many riders, as this not only gives you extra safety margin on the exit but most importantly allows for extra speed on every drive. Since we spend much more time on the gas than we do braking or turning, this is an absolutely critical element to fast lap times.

The simple way to begin to use all of the insides of the racetrack is to find a new reference for gauging your proximity to the curbing. Most riders use their head as a gauge and as a result, end up leaving too much margin on the inside like Rider A. A good starting point is to instead (for example) look to place your knee just on the edge of the grass at the apex. It does not matter if you use your head, elbow or knee for a reference. Take a few laps at a reduced speed so that you can ensure 100% accuracy with your lines, and Until next time... Ride fast.
