FROM THE EDITOR

THE UPSIDE Here we are at the end of a tumultuous year. And yes, it had been hell for many. But if you are still here, be thankful. If you are still riding, be thankful. In short, just be thankful. Be thankful for all of the blessings and the lessons, in all of their forms. It may surprise many, but the motorcycle industry is doing quite well, considering/ despite the impact that the pandemic has had on the world’s general health and global economics. Some are stating that the virus sparked a boost in the moto-market. Let’s call it what it is, there is no better method of social 12 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM | DECEMBER 2020

distancing than riding your bike. And if more folks are riding now than before, I'm going to put that in the win column. So let's focus on the now and be thankful for what we have and hold. We are still here. We are still riding. I am thankful. See you in 2021. Best, Allan @mrblackmoses

The new bright LED headlights weigh one pound less than the halogen bulbs from the 2020 model. The flush-mounted position light and the integrated turn signals, housed in the removable mirrors, both utilize bright LEDs.

RIDE MODES OF THE KAWASAKI ZX-10R + ZX-10RR There are four ride modes at the beck and call of the rider on the 2021 ZX-10R and the ZX-10RR. Each mode engages the traction control and engine power modes in varying degrees. For track riding or active road riding, there is Sport mode. Road mode covers a lot of bases and is appropriate for the streets, highways, and byways. Rain mode has the most interaction with the traction control, set at 5, and sets

The remaining mode, Rider, can be manually set to customize how the traction control and power modes are engaged. KAWASAKI ZX-10R + ZX-10RR ENGINE A 998cc inline-four-cylinder engine powers the ZX10R and the ZX-10RR. With a maximum torque output of 83.9 at 11,300 rpm, the ZX-10R is not lacking in the power department. Nor is the ZX-10RR with its slightly lower output of 81.7 at 11,500. For the 2021 ZX-10R and ZX-10RR, Kawasaki incorporated a new air-cooled oil cooler with its own circuit. The oil travels from the lower crankcase on the left side where it cools out before it returns to the right side.

rpm. Both the ZX-10R + ZX-10RR engines employ FingerFollower Valve Actuation that allows aggressive cam characterizations so that valves can open and close rapidly for increased performance. This actuation reduces valve train mass by almost twenty percent compared to the tappet-style actuation. The 2021 gearbox is upgraded. The six-speed cassette transmission’s forty-one tooth rear sprocket is larger than the 2020 model, by two teeth. The gear ratios are shorter in first through third gears to get off of the line and out of corners faster.

The front brakes feature radial mounted four 30mm piston front brake monoblock calipers with impressive 330mm rotors. The front end is activated by a Brembo radial-pump master cylinder that uses minimal lever force to apply appropriate pressure. The rear brake master cylinder is now further inward and is less cumbersome. The ZX-10R is offered as an ABS or a standard version. The ZX-10RR is only presented with the ABS platform.

An Ă–hlins twin-tube electronic steering damper offers consistent damping performance. At lower speeds, the damper is less engaged. At higher speeds, damping is activated to maintain stability and overall handling.

HARLEY-DAVIDSON

LIVEWIRE

WORDS: ALLAN LANE IMAGES:ALLAN LANE DECEMBER 2020 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM | 25

THE FIRST RIDE: HARLEY-DAVIDSON LIVEWIRE THE HARLEY-DAVIDSON LIVEWIRE IS NOT THE HARLEY-DAVIDSON YOU THOUGHT IT WAS. IT’S THE HARLEY-DAVIDSON THAT YOU MIGHT BE MISSING... BEFORE WE BEGIN, let's be clear. This is not the Harley-Davidson that you think it is. I want you to dismiss any preconceived notions that you may have about the Harley-Davidson LiveWire. While you’re at it, toss out any existing thoughts that you have on what an electric motorcycle is. There is always going to be that conversation regarding the nature of fuel-driven vehicles versus electrically driven motors. There is no argument that there is a major difference between the two. They offer completely different experiences for the rider. The roar of the gas-powered motor has a dominating presence compared to the whiz and whirl of an electric powered engine. Let's say that you are on a state to state ride on your petro laden steed and you run out of gas. You have options. At the worse, you may have to make that short or long walk to the nearest gas station, purchase a jerry can, fill it with fuel and make the trek back to your bike. A state to state ride on an electric-powered machine takes more planning and a bit of math. The route must be strategically outlined to include charging stations and the distance between each one along the way to your destination. 26 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM | DECEMBER 2020

DECEMBER 2020 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM | 27

THE FIRST RIDE: HARLEY-DAVIDSON LIVEWIRE The list of concerns can go on. By continuing the list of cons versus pros, you are missing out on that most precious seat time. You would be robbing yourself of the experience. Let the worries go. Just for a bit. The Harley-Davidson LiveWire is something altogether different. Granted, while it is derivative of today’s modern battery-powered electric vehicles, the LiveWire is carving out its own groove in the EV class. Yes, it's an electric motorcycle sans the pop and gurgle of a rambunctious motor or the thunder cracking of a gut-punching exhaust pipe... But once the ride begins, you forget about the things that you thought were missing. Read that again... "Once the ride begins, you will forget about the things that you thought were missing." The LiveWire is sleek and attractive. It looks nothing like any Harley-Davidson that I've seen before. Slim with aggressive body lines, the ergonomics are comfortable. The riding position is a mix of a relaxed standard yet can get aggressive quickly thanks to the placement of the footpegs and the controls at the handlebar. It took a moment to get in the habit of not extending my fingers reaching for the clutch lever or tipping my left foot in search of the shift lever. A small distraction that I shortly overcame. Once the LiveWire is powered on, the 4.3 inch TFT color touchscreen dash lights up. This is where all of the bike's data and info is displayed. You can select options, like one of the multiple ride modes, via the touchscreen or the handlebar switches. The LiveWire lets you know that it is awake 28 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM | DECEMBER 2020

by emitting a haptic pulse. Comparable to a heartbeat, the engine discreetly pulsates instead of idling, only noticeable to you as you are sitting on the bike at a standstill. The data displayed also includes battery status. The RESS or Renewable Energy Storage System is what Harley-Davidson calls the LiveWire's regenerative 15.5 kWh high voltage battery. The way the regenerating or self-charging system works is when the throttle is closed and the motor comes to a rest, the battery's used energy is replaced. On a full charge, the LiveWire possesses a range of 146 miles in city settings where you frequently come to a stop and the RESS can recharge. The mileage range drops to 95 when cruising on the highway or if your ride has fewer stops. This is where Harley-Davidson stepped up to address the concerns of running out of juice when out on a longer ride. Via the H-D Connect smartphone app, you will find a network of charging locations across the U.S. and Europe that consists of Harley-Davidson dealerships and congenial charging stations such as Electrify America in North America. There are two methods for charging the LiveWire. Level 1 charging involves the power cord that is stored underneath the bike's seat. Connected to the bike, the power cord can be plugged into any household outlet with a voltage output of 120 or 140. This method of charging is the longer of the two. It averages out to 13 miles per charging hour. If you have plans to ride in the morning, I recommend plugging in the night before. At the first connection, you'll hear a gurgling noise, emulating the sound of fuel filling the tank. H-D really did their best to help you dismiss the things that you thought were missing. DECEMBER 2020 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM | 35

THE FIRST RIDE: HARLEY-DAVIDSON LIVEWIRE The other charging method is the fastest. It uses DC Fast Charge technology that will have the LiveWire's RESS at full charge in one hour. As mentioned, the network of Fast Charge Stations is listed in the H-D Connect app. The H-D Connect app is more than a listing of charge stations. With the app installed, the LiveWire connects to your device via BlueTooth and provides a list of features ranging from the bike's location, charging status and a schedule of notifications that include service and maintenance reminders. One of the highlights is the integration of turn by turn directions that are displayed on the LiveWire's dash. Impressive tech does not a motorcycle make. So how does the LiveWire get on with it, as it were? Tire to asphalt, does the performance of the LiveWire take up the slack for what we gas-powered motorcycle zealots may feel is lacking? The answer is yes. And even then some. Put the conversation of what isn't there to the side and focus on what is there. The ride. The LiveWire engine is Harley-Davidson's Revelation Powertrain that produces 105 horses and a torque output of 86, at 0 rpm. Zero. None. Nada. That means that you have full access to the LiveWire's horsepower and torque output at your beck and call by simply twisting the throttle. Twist and go is too basic a description for how quick the LiveWire is. The impressive ride by wire technology eliminates any delay between throttle input and engine output. You roll, it rolls. The slim bodied LiveWire handles curves 36 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM | DECEMBER 2020

with an exhilarating exhibition of agility and nimbleness. Don't be fooled by the slimness. The LiveWire weighs just under 550 pounds. However, it's mostly all battery weight... The LiveWire introduces the Harley-Davidson Reflex Defensive Riding System. The RDRS combines cornering ABS, cornering traction control rear wheel lift mitigation, drag torque slip control to offer a comprehensive suite of rider assists. There a four ride modes: Rain, Road, Sport, and Range. Additionally, three custom modes allow you to customize the RDRS's level of engagement. The LiveWire employs an impressive list of components that separate it from the other electric motorcycles on the market today. Showa big piston front forks and a Showa rear mono-shock compose the LiveWire's suspensions system. 300mm dual front rotors and Brembo four-piston monobloc, radialmount front calipers make up the LiveWire's braking system. With a lean angle of 45 degrees and the employed suspension and braking setup, the LiveWire is a fun ride on the backroads and twisties. At the root of it, I much prefer the rumble and tumbles of a gas-powered engine with a booming exhaust system to send a fair warning to cagers that I am also on the road, to stay in their lane and out of mine. And as much I appreciate and like the LiveWire, I struggle with two things issues. One is specific to the LiveWire. I do miss the sounds and vibrations that I believe a motorcycle should make. The emotions of it all. I understand that this is how it is, regardless of the brand, as it comes to electric bikes. The lament is a moot point. The other issue that stands out is the price tag. DECEMBER 2020 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM | 39

THE FIRST RIDE: HARLEY-DAVIDSON LIVEWIRE The LiveWire is available in two color options and priced as follows: Vivid Black $29,799 and Color $30,149. Those numbers make it a potentially hard sell. This is LiveWire's dilemma. Harley-Davidson purists will be intrigued but may ultimately feel that they are perhaps betraying the H.O.G. oath that they swore to if they were to purchase one. The non-Harley-Davidson rider will be enthralled by the LiveWire after riding it and would perhaps be willing to take the same H.O.G. oath and join the fold. That is until they see the price tag. I'm not saying that the price is a deal-breaker. I'm saying that the price makes it a hard deal. And that's a shame. The LiveWire is a great bike. I enjoyed every moment with it. I was a little upset when I had to return it. But for the average rider who is not fortunate enough to be a moto-journalist, short of dealer supported demo rides and events, they may never get a chance to spend quality time with and come to appreciate all that the LiveWire brings to the table. An opportunity, missed. The LiveWire is packed with a lot of technology, bells and whistles. There is a lot to geek out about. However, if your posture leans more toward the gear head side of things, you will not be disappointed by the LiveWire's performance. This is not some high priced electric scooter. The LiveWire is the real deal. Perhaps not for everyone but for those that are interested in what the future of electric vehicles holds, the LiveWire is not the Harley-Davidson you thought it was. It's the Harley-Davidson that you might be missing.

THE FIRST RIDE: 2021 SLINGSHOT

POLARIS SHIFTS INTO THE NEW YEAR WITH THREE NEW SLINGSHOT MODELS, REFINING THEIR AUTOMATIC WITH NEW UPGRADES AND LOTS OF FUN FEATURES.

BY NOW, YOU’VE seen the Polaris Slingshot, officially classed as an “auto-cycle”. The Slingshot combines the steering, shifting and speed of a sports car with the torque and openair feel of a motorcycle to create a unique riding experience. Its racy look has piqued the interest of all riders, young and old. Slingshot has come into its own, since it’s 2015 release, with a community of dedicated riders and enthusiasts. Simply put, it’s the most fun you’ll have on the street, in a side46 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM | DECEMBER 2020

by-side vehicle, starting at just under $20k. The 2021 Polaris Slingshot can be summed up in one word… refined. Polaris now offers three new Slingshot Models, all featuring the ProStar powerplant, boasting a four-cylinder, 2.0 liter, 1997cc engine that offers two performance modes: Comfort and Slingshot. These riding modes are managed via the push of a button at the steering wheel.

The entry-level S model returns for 2021, available in both manual ($19,999) and AutoDrive ($21, 699) offering the perfect canvas for drivers looking to create a ride that truly represents their personality and style. The 2021 Polaris Slingshot S now comes standard, with the basic Technology Package, including the Stage 1 Rockford Fosgate Audio System.

pounds of torque at 5500rpm. The 2021 Polaris Slingshot R is built for the performance-minded driver. Available in manual or automatic, the engine output rises to 203hp at 8250rpm with 144 foot-pounds of torque at 6500rpm. New for 2021, Slingshot is introducing the R Limited Edition. At the top of the line, the R Limited Edition will stand out from the crowd with its limitededition, asymmetrically designed Neon The SL model has a maximum output Fade paint, blacked-out badging, and of 178hp at 8500rpm and 120 foot- lightweight aluminum matte black DECEMBER 2020 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM | 47

wheels. Available in a manual or AutoDrive transmission, the R Limited Edition includes paddle shifters with AutoDrive, new Rockford Fosgate audio system with redesigned speaker pods and Rockford tweeters in the dash, Ride Command with Apple CarPlay and turn-by-turn navigation, and vehicle hill hold. Polaris offers upgrades focused on the total driving experience, including Drive, Sound and Style. Last year, Polaris introduced their AutoDrive transmission, perfect for those who loved the futuristic look of the Slingshot, but wanted the automatic experience. As a Slingshot enthusiast, I wasn’t a huge fan of their automatic version. It was a bit awkward, especially in first gear, and felt like it was shifting just a bit slower than I would in a manual. For the 2021 Polaris Slingshot, Polaris offers a complete retune of the AutoDrive. The shifting is much smoother, faster and more consistent than its predecessor. If you have the 2020 AutoDrive version, Polaris offers the 2021 AutoDrive Calibration upgrade. My favorite feature for 2021 has to be the addition of steering wheel-mounted Paddle Shifters to the AutoDrive version. Imagine switching from a cruise on a beautiful scenic highway to taking turns in mountain canyons. Designed from high-quality composite DECEMBER 2020 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM | 49

MOTOGP ESCAPES ITS WORST-CASE SCENARIO AT THE RED BULL RING, BARELY... DECEMBER 2020 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM | 61

THE GRID: MOTOGP WITH B.T.

IT STARTED AS most MotoGP weekends, with Moto3 producing its usual slugfest and Albert “Superman” Arenas displaying the “S” on his helmet wasn’t just for show as he grabbed the top spot of the podium.

bother negotiating a new contract because I’m not coming back!”

The Moto2 race started as any race, riders tightly bunched together as they snaked their way around the circuit like a two-wheeled anaconda. Then, on the start of lap 22, this beautiful race weekend turned into Sunday Bloody Sunday.

Going into turn 3, Johann Zarco took an unexpected line and collided with Franco Morbidelli at nearly 300KPH. Both bikes, by the sheer force of the crash, were sent hurling toward turn 3: Morbidelli’s bike full speed and Zarco’s bike somersaulting like a gymnast into the turn. By the “new hand of God” both bikes narrowly, missed Maverick Vinales and Valentino Rossi, flying above Vinales and in Vale’s case, mere inches in front of him.

This sent shock waves through the motorsports world. This should’ve been the number one story of the weekend and it was… Until lap 8 of the This unfortunately was the last bit normalcy of what premier class race. That’s when the afternoon took would be a near-catastrophic afternoon of racing. a turn that even two days later is hard to shake.

Championship leader Enea Bastianini highsided just below the crest coming out of the first turn, leaving his bike spinning in the middle of the circuit. As luck would have it, coming out of the slipstream Openbank Aspar team racer Hafizh Syahrin t-boned Bastianini’s disabled bike launching him skyward and landing him half on, hand off the race circuit. It was a miracle that Syahrin escaped serious injury and never lost consciousness. It was a minor miracle that no one else was injured in this horrific crash. What was overshadowed was the dominant victory from former Moto3 Champion Jorge Martin. Martin dominated the field and was never seriously challenged for victory. Horrific Crashes seem to make you say, “Oh Yeah, who won?”

Words cannot describe seeing this in real-time. And when I watch the replays, it brings tears to my eyes. This crash affected everyone in the entire paddock. During the Red flag as Rossi sat in his garage, his face looked like he had seen a ghost. His mechanics were visibly shaken as they went about trying to restore normalcy. Miraculously, no one was injured. How many miracles can one race circuit have in one afternoon?

Brad Binder said it best as he watched from With the uneasiness of Moto2 still in the air, it behind, “Valentino Rossi is the luckiest man in the was time for the show! world right now!” Going into the fourth round of the championship, there was so much drama surrounding this race that it could’ve easily been a soap opera and leading the madness in “All My GP Children” was Andrea Dovizioso. He told Ducati, “don’t 62 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM | DECEMBER 2020

And he’s not lying. I can’t help but think after watching the replays of how close we were to losing the greatest motorcycle racer ever and his teammate.

JOHANN ZARCO STANDS OVER FRANCO MORBIDELLI AFTER THE CRASH.

What if he had not been so lucky? What if there was an inch difference in all that occurred? What ifs. What ifs. What ifs! I’ve always kind of hated what ifs. I mean, it didn’t happen, so why dwell on it? We’ve all had close calls in life, especially if you ride a motorcycle. Someone changing lanes abruptly, the dreaded left turn in front of you by a vehicle trying to beat the light. We know the risks. So if it doesn’t happen, why sweat it?

because I wrote that damn article about this being Rossi’s last Dance, maybe I feel I cursed him? Maybe its because the entire motorcycle racing community loves him and wants him to ride off into the sunset as their hero forever! Maybe it’s just because he’s a human being and no one wants to see someone perish while pursuing their passion. I’m trying to block the “what ifs” out of my mind like everyone else. But we’re all human.

The winner of this race was almost inconsequential This seems different. I don’t know why. I don’t but it was “Desmo Dovi” showing his mastery of have all the answers, I’m just a guy who got lucky race and mind management. This should’ve been to be writing about my favorite sport. wished that the race would just finish, damned the winner. Watching two near-death moments is enough for anyone. But, as we always say, “The riders know the risk.” And I guess we do as well, as viewers. Doesn’t make it any easier but this is the sport we chose to love. No one makes us watch, but we do. The “what ifs” can go well into the night, the blame for such incidents as well. The reckless Frenchman Zarco, a circuit that’s been called out before on how dangerous it is by World Champion Casey Stoner… The blame can be passed around like a joint at a music concert. Will anything be done before the second race in Austria begins in less than five days as of the writing of this article? Who knows? But one thing is for certain, as much as I hate cliche’s some ring true. Live each day as if it’s your last. Because you never know. Cherish what you love and tell what you love that you love it because as we’ve seen, it can be gone in a freak instant. I love all you MotoGP riders. You are my Sports Heroes. I love you people that take the time to read these scrambled ass thoughts I try to turn into readable material and most of all I love having a life that allows me to witness all of this and cherish it because I know more than ever this can all go away in an instant. The championship is closer now, just eleven points separate Dovizioso from the other Frenchman, Fabio Quartararo. I believe this championship is the best I’ve ever seen and will come down to the final race of the season, but my mind is constantly reminding me, “What if…” That feeling will fade I hope and I can get back to enjoying my passion like the rest of you. WORDS: DEVONNE DUERBAUM IMAGES: HEESEN YACHTS 70 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM | DECEMBER 2020

WINTER RIDING IN FLORIDA IT'S THAT TIME of the year... Winter. For most of you, that word makes you cringe. Considering that most of you get four seasons, unlike us Floridians. Fortunately for me, hearing the word winter gets my pipes going. As a Florida native, I've dealt with heat and humidity my whole life. For those that think I am the luckiest person to live in constant sunshine, it does get a bit old. Also, don't get me going on how flat and straight the roads are here. Running around in shorts is nice, but when it comes to riding, it's not ideal. Don't get me wrong. I much rather ride in sunshine versus snow or rain. But sometimes it gets insanely hot. And if you're like me, 99% of the time DECEMBER 2020 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM | 71

you are wearing protective gear. My protective gear kit is composed of either my Arai or Bell helmet, an Alpinestars or Ducati Jacket, Alpinestars or BH&BR boots... Gloves from Alpinestars, and jeans. When it's above 80 degrees, like any person, I start to get hot. In Florida, when they say 80, it's really 90 due to humidity. When you are sitting at a light or in traffic, having the Florida sun blaring down on you is uncomfortable and far from enjoyable. So when I say I am excited for Winter, you 72 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM | DECEMBER 2020

now can imagine where I am coming from. Winter in Florida is unlike the rest of the country's Winter. It's the absolute best time of the year. During the day it ranges from the mid-60s to 70s with sunshine and clear skies. Once the sun goes down, it usually stays in the 50s, depending on the day. It's amazing. Some friends and I will often take a trip down to the Florida Keys. Sometimes, we head north towards Daytona. A Florida Winter isn't just all about the temperature. Everyone seems happier. Being able to call friends up, throw on all my gear and hop on my bike without breaking a sweat is what a rider dreams of. And personally, I think the sky is more beautiful during this time.
