FROM THE EDITOR

I recently had the privilege of watching "Get on Up II” with my son. For those not in the know, Get On Up II was the second DVD release from Jason Britton’s Team No Limit. Taking it back to 2006 and talking to my son about how the industry was then and much it has changed over the years, well... I got a little emotional. I witnessed the look of sincere interest make its way across my son’s face as he smiled. He was entertained. He was really into it, and I think that says a lot since he is only seven years old. Ten years ago, the motorcycle industry was different. Is was fresh and exciting. It seemed that there was a bike night every night and a stunt show every weekend. Myrtle Beach and Daytona Bike Weeks were electric! There were weekly television shows that celebrated our culture. The bike scene was just… fun. 14 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM

Not that it isn’t fun now… But it's not like it was. If you were a rider or in the business during that time, you know what I mean. But watching my son watch, with enjoyment, a DVD from a magical time, for me at least, made me smile. It gives me hope. It makes me curious as to what type of rider that he will become and what the bike industry will be like when he comes of age. I hope that the industry returns to the days of fun and excitement. I hope that, for my son and the next generation of rider and every generation after that, the industry gets back on up. I heard some say that the industry has seen its best days. I disagree. I think the best days of the industry are yet to arrive. Best, Allan allan@sportbikesincmag.com

THE PRESS ROOM: INDUSTRY NEWS THE 2020 SUZUKI KATANA: 10 THINGS THAT YOU NEED TO KNOW. The Suzuki GSX1100S Katana made its debut in 1981. At the time, its design was both modernist and futuristic. Throughout the years, the Katana fell victim to the design trends of the time that made it subject to the pursuit of aerodynamic bliss. Model year after model year, the GSX1100S Katana morphed into the Katana 600, last produced for the 2006 model year. Suzuki dropped a tease in 2017 with their Katana 3.0 Concept, unveiled at EICMA. The Katana 3.0 Concept was built by Engines Engineering with design credits going to Rodolfo Frascoli. The new 2020 model from dives deep into the soul of the 1981 Suzuki Katana with aesthetics that will resonate with the true Katana purist and lure in new fans of the model as well. Here are then things that you need to know about the 2020 Suzuki Katana: 1. THE KATANA HAS SUZUKI GSX-R1000’S ENGINE Suzuki chose the inline four cylinder, liquid cooled 999cc, liquid cooled, four stroke GSX-R1000 engine from the 2005 - 2008 model year range. The engine has been tuned to provide a smoother throttle response and an increased torque band. 2. A RETURN TO THE FUTURE The new Katana takes its visual cues from the original 1981 model but has been hitting the CrossFit circuit. Its lines are sharp with intent and while keeping its futuristic presence. The new Katana went back in time, grabbed the original Katana, beefed it up before returning to the future with a modern take on a futuristic classic. Spotlighting its heritage is the red logo decal, inherited from the 1981 Katana. 3. WHEELS AND TIRES Paired with the Dunlop Sportmax Roadsport 2 tires, the Katana’s wheels have six spokes and were cast from aluminum. 4. ERGONOMICS The seating on the Katana is less aggressive, offering a standard riding position for the rider. With a seat height of 32.5 inches, the bike manageable when at a standstill, allowing a greater chance that feet can be planted flat on the ground. 5. SUSPENSION The Katana is fitted with fully adjustable KYB 43mm inverted front fork suspension set up that offers 4.72 inches of stroke. The rear link suspension features 2.5 inches with rebound

18 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM

damping and spring preload adjustability. 6. BRAKES The brake system includes a Brembo radial-mount monobloc setup and a Bosch ABS. The dual 310mm floating front rotors are paired with four 32mm piston calipers. 7. TRACTION CONTROL Included in the suite of bells and whistles is a three-mode traction control system. The system continuously monitors wheel speed, throttle position, crank position, and gear position and will decrease power if wheel slip is detected. In the LOW setting, the TCS is less engaged and is intended optimum riding conditions. The MIDDLE setting has more interaction and is appropriate for urban asphalt and decent riding conditions. In the HIGH setting, the system has the most interaction and serves the rider best in wet or cold riding weather. The TCS can be disengaged entirely if the rider chooses. 8. FRAME Consisting of a twin-spar aluminum alloy frame, the primary tubes of the Katana’s frame run directly from the steering head to swingarm pivot. The swingarm is an aluminum alloy, strongly braced to assist the frame in saving overall weight and improving performance and handling. 9. INSTRUMENT CLUSTER An LCD multifunction compact data cluster provides the rider with a plethora of usable data while riding: Speedometer, Tachometer, Odometer, Trip Meter, Lap Time, Gear Position, Water Temperature, Fuel Consumption, Traction Control Mode, Battery, and a Clock. 10. EXHAUST SYSTEM The four into two into one exhaust system includes an underbelly exhaust chamber and a Suzuki Exhaust Tuning valve. The exhaust chamber takes on some of the system’s bulk and fits underneath the Katana’s engine, thus allowing for a smaller sized muffler pipe and cleaner rear end section. The SET valve, activated by a servomotor, uses a butterfly valve to control exhaust pressure waves to improve combustion at a low RPM. The 2020 Suzuki Katana will be available in a Metallic Mystic Silver when it hits the showroom floor in 2019. However, Suzuki will have a bevy of components and accessories so that you can customize your Katana to your liking.

THE PRESS ROOM: GRID NEWS DANI PEDROSA: MOTOGP LEGEND The now retired, three-time world champion received the honor of being crowned a MotoGP Legend and being inducted into the MotoGP Legends Hall of Fame in a ceremony that followed the 2018 season finale at Valencia. Pedrosa earned the 125 class crown in 2003. He followed that up with back to back championship in the 250 class in 2004 and 2005. “Obviously it’s a very emotional moment you never expect it to arrive when you’re a kid, and now to be here is a bit strange but I’ happy because I felt a lot of support from all the fans, a lot from all the paddock. I’m really, really happy about this moment to see my rivals of a lifetime here. I feel that MotoGP gave me a lot of things in my life because basically I’ve always been here and I learned a lot in life thanks to MotoGP. In the same way, I’m very happy that I could give something else to the sport. When I started, it was a new generation winning races and Championships, not only me but everyone here on the front row. This is good for me because it’s a nice feeling that we opened a door for a new generation. Luckily I don’t know all my numbers which is a good thing!” - Dani Pedrosa #26 24 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM

You could see tears of joy on his cool-down lap that doesn’t normally appear for the otherwise, cool, customer that is Vinales.

And if Phillip Island was any indication, when it comes to MotoGP, all bets are off. AGNES ANRIETTE BALINT is known amongst her peers as Anriette Stunts. American born and bred with strong family ties in Hungary, the pro freestyle stunt rider resides in California and is the newest member of the internationally recognized stunt team, Team No Limit.

To classify her as part of the tidal wave of ladies that are taking the stunt world by storm is a disservice. Classifying her such would be stating that she's doing great... for a girl. The truth of the matter is that she's doing great. Period. Her doing great has nothing to do with her sex. However, it has everything to do with her ability, drive, passion, and determination, to be the best. I am a firm believer that if you want to be the best, you must surround yourself with the best. After all, iron sharpens iron. By that measure, Anriette has had a leg up on her competition for quite some time. SBI: What is the most challenging part of being a professional freestyle stunt rider? AS: One of the most challenging parts is doing SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM | 49

everything you can to make sure that you have a great bike setup and the opportunities to go out and ride as much as possible to keep progressing. I’ve had the great opportunity of working on set for a couple of music videos and a television commercial. They were amazing experiences. When another offer comes around, it’s definitely something I consider and look into whether it’s something I can do within my skills. Anriette appeared the Taylor Swift video for the single "Bad Blood," doubling for Jessica Alba. As her list of credits for television and film begin to grow, there is a difference when it comes to having a great session of riding in a lot and on-set technical riding where the demand and pressure to perform is much greater. One can be considered training while the other is the actual job. Perhaps there is no difference at all... It's all entertainment for the audience and all fun for the rider. SBI: What is the difference between being a technical rider and stunt rider, if there is one? AS: It can be any way you break it down, but I feel you are both technical and doing stunts to be a stunt rider. Anriette's current boss is Jason Britton, the GodFather of Stunt Riding and founding owner of Team No Limit. She recently joined the team and is currently touring the country, performing for large crowds at dealerships, expos, and events. SBI: Did Jason make you audition for your spot on the team? AS: I did not have to audition to be on the team, but I am very thankful to be given the opportunity to join the best stunt team in America. I was 50 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM

offered the chance of a lifetime, and it wasn’t an offer I was going to turn down. It has been one of the best decisions I’ve made in my stunt riding life. Anriette was the first member of her family to be born in the U.S. Her family comes from Hungary, where she attended school when she was younger. She returns to Hungary to visit her family there, as her schedule allows. She has been riding motorcycles since she was twelve years old. Her first bike was a Romet Pony. Anriette has progressed a long way since the days of her Romet Pony. She currently rides a 2018 Kawasaki Ninja ZX-6R that she has named "Pálinka." SBI: Tell me about your stunt bike build... AS: I thankfully had my bike build done at Jason Britton’s No Limit Motorsports shop, and I love my bike! It came out amazing and everything you would need to build a bike like mine, they have it. SBI: What were some of the "must have" components for your bike? AS: It’s a long list, but you definitely need a crash cage, a handbrake setup, good masters cylinders, a dented or fabricated fuel tank and good tires. SBI: Did you wake up one day and say, “You know what, I’m going to be a stunt rider?” Or was there an element of the stunt life that you were attracted to over the other styles of riding? AS: It came over time. I never thought to be a stunt rider as a kid. But once I got into riding and seeing more of what is capable on a motorcycle beside just riding... It got me intrigued. SBI: Do you remember what your first trick was? AS: The first trick I would say was a Sit-Down wheelie on the Honda 50 and then learning how 54 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM

to scrape the wheelie bar. SBI: Do you have a favorite trick? AS: Favorite trick? It's hard to pick one, but I would say as of right now, Backing-It-In. SBI: What about your least favorite trick? AS: Not doing anything! Anriette has a simple yet impactful philosophy when it comes to riding: "Life is too short to take seriously. Live, laugh and love." That philosophy has served Anriette well. She admits that she has had her share of bad days. SBI: When you do have those bad days, how do you push through? AS: I do have bad days. It comes with it. I used not to handle it the best, back in the day. But I am very thankful I have Frank to help me see through it and understand that even if it was a bad day, I was still out there putting in time. That even though that session wasn’t anything I was happy about, it was still going to help me progress. Those bad days, I was still teaching myself what I was trying to learn. So now as I’ve gotten wiser with time when I have a bad day, I just think as positive as I can and know that even though I didn’t get the trick, I was attempting... I am getting that much closer to it because of these "bad days." And honestly, the more you understand to just "go with it" even when it’s not working out right and just enjoy the time you get out there to ride, it ends up being a good day anyway!" SBI: Frank? AS: Frank is my boyfriend. Sorry fellas, Anriette is taken. I stumped Anriette when it came to her favorite stunt rider. SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM | 59

THE REV LIMITER: ANRIETTE STUNTS

SBI: Do you have a favorite stunt rider? Someone that you are inspired by, look up to or that entertains you? AS: That’s a hard question. It's hard because there is no “s” at the end of it! I have more than one, so I can’t answer that question! However, many people have inspired me and continue to do so. My boyfriend Frank who taught me a lot of what I know, and for many reasons, I am as far along as I am because of him. Jason Britton. Johnny Boy. Krazy Kyle. Brandy Valdez. Sarah Lezito and many more. It’s hard to single out them, but there are a lot of people that inspire me in many aspects of stunt riding, both male and female. There are some that inspire me I have never met, as well. Anriette's dream stunt session would be best described as a huge lot session where she would gather a lot of stunt riders. All of the riders would have fun, ripping around on a perfectly flat surface with the right type of grip and amazing weather. As her notary grows, Anriette understands that she has the opportunity to touch the lives of fellow riders, both young and old. Being a role model seems to be part of the job description, and she is ready for the responsibility. SBI: What would you say to encourage the next generation of riders? AS: Always respect every motorcycle you ride. Motorcycles are a beast of a machine. Smile and have a good time while you ride. If you love it, it is the best feeling for your soul. She spends the first fifteen minutes of her day, 60 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM

trying to wake up. She spends the last fifteen minutes of the day, prepping herself to fall asleep. Throughout the day, Anriette finds time to enjoy life, eat good food, listen to great music, spend time with her loved ones and of course, riding her Pálinka. She believes that if there is "something that intrigues you if there is something that you want to do for yourself if you have set a goal... You should follow it through to the end". Follow it through to the end, regardless of how difficult the task is or even if there are people that may not be supportive of you. "In the end, achieving the goal is what will bring you joy, and it will continue to do so until it doesn't." SBI: What does the future hold for Anriette Stunts? AS: That’s a good question. We all have big dreams and goals. The future holds so much for me. Indeed it does. Anriette has secured a solid lineup of sponsors and supporters. The list includes No Limit Motorsports, Superlite Sprockets, Drive System USA, Motul USA, ICON Motorsports and Dunlop Motorcycle. SBI: How important are relationships with your sponsors to you? AS: They are all very important to me. The sponsors support people that are living their passion out and willing to show it to the world. They are backing them with all the support possible. If it weren’t for all my sponsors, I wouldn’t be able to get as far as I am with my 2018 ZX6R and my stunt riding. SBI: Are you living your best life? AS: I am! I am very thankful. More thankful than many will ever understand. I am truly blessed! SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM | 63

you ride motorcycles, you probably can wheelie, or you have that feeling run through your body wanting to get up and attempt to do any type of stunt, even if it's mediocre. I’ve had that inner feeling ever since I was younger, but I’ve never done much about it, besides the occasional stand up on my seat, or even pegs with a leg out while riding. You feel unstoppable, even if it isn’t as cool to everyone as it is to you. I’m here to tell you about the real cool people, the stunt riders. It’s not all glamour. They practice a lot yet still from time to time, land on their, you know. But when they don’t, it’s captivating. Seeing someone be able to have control of their motorcycle like that is fascinating. The way they interact with the crowd, and the crowd’s reaction with them, is like no other. It’s not just one gender or age that find this sport amazing, kids, women, elderly, they all love it and can’t keep their eyes, and more so their smile’s away. I’ve been to a

good amount of events with stunt shows, and they never disappoint. Every time I am at an event, it happens to be Aaron Colton performing, which is not a complaint. He was born in ’91, so he’s young, but the age doesn’t show at all. Every time he’s performing, people are fascinated. I was just at the F1 Miami Fan Festival recently, and in between the cars flying by making everyone’s ears bleed, in a good way, Aaron came out to get the crowd hyped. I looked around, and so many different people shared one thing, a smile. Not one person in the enormous crowd was not smiling. I could hear people nearby saying they don’t understand how someone can control the motorcycle and perform those stunts like it’s nothing, which I agree. These riders are incredible and myself, along with so many others having nothing but respect for them. There are so many things that I love about motorsports, and this is just one of them, and I am so thankful to be able to witness these things up close and personal. So if you have a chance to watch a show, watch and don’t tell me the hype isn’t real. 86 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM

THE ANATOMY OF A WHEELIE

THE ANATOMY OF A WHEELIE

will change depending on the motorcycle you are using. But the basic principles remain the same. First, you need to understand that to maintain a perfect speed and controlled wheelie you will need to be at what we call the "balance point" position. Now every machine is a little different when reaching the balance point. A V-twin type motorcycle will need a much higher balance point compared to a sportbike because of its weight and low to the ground design. SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM | 103

IMPROVE YOUR SKILLS: WHEELIES The first step to learn is the clutch up. This alone takes a couple of steps that you would need to learn and feel comfortable doing so before going right to the balance point, also known as the sweet spot. Every bike will be slightly different and will require different amounts of RPMs to get the bike in the air. Also, position change, speed, and self-applied pulled force on the bike will also change the amount of RPMs needed to reach its proper height. Once you get that down and are feeling comfortable getting the bike nice and tall without gaining a ton of speed, you should be ready learn to carry and hold the wheelie. Carrying the wheelie will require a combination of the throttle and brake: ninety percent throttle and maybe ten percent brake. The brake used can be either the brake master on your motorcycle or the engine braking, itself. And you never will need a lot of brake power. One great tip for throttle control is never to be choppy! Be sure that you make smooth twists of the throttle when applying more and also when decreasing. The main idea of holding the wheelie in the air is to lock the throttle within a few RPMs up or down and adjust as needed. Just as you feel the bike hold its speed and not chasing you will then need to make sure you are covering

the brake just in case you give it a little to much throttle. The light feather touching of the brake will bring you back forward. Never jab the brake! Always be smooth and remain calm. As long as you are smooth, there is plenty of time to fix or set the wheelie down. Never run the bike out of gear with the tire still in the air. It could result in a tank slapper with no speed left to take the weight off the front end. Make sure there is always a little throttle left over to pick up some speed to set the wheelie down softly. Basically, there are three steps. Step one, clutch it up. Step two, holding the wheelie smoothly. Step three, setting the wheelie down smoothly at a safe speed. I think the most critical part of learning the wheelie is doing so in an open space area. Roads are tricky to learn on with distractions and objects that you could crash into resulting in some serious consequences. So be smart and learn in a proper parking lot or open space. Get yourself a nice ICON helmet and jacket, and you will be glad you did because we never know when it's our turn to meet our not so distant friend, the pavement. Be safe everyone.
