FROM THE EDITOR

THE SUPERMONO The Ducati Supermono was my first experience with a rare and limited edition of the Italian brand's superbikes. The Supermono was a superlight, single-cylinder motorcycle, engineered and made for racing spec class competition from 1993 through to 1995. Granted, I never saw one with my own eyes for another two decades later but I was introduced and intrigued by them during my tenure at Fast by Ferracci. I was working at Fast by Ferracci in 2006. I recall Eraldo Ferracci bringing me a list of part numbers and a list of clients that he wanted me to contact to alert them about the parts that had just arrived. He never told me what bike the parts were for nor their significance. The list of clients was impressive. The list of parts and their retail prices were staggering. To be honest, I had no idea what I was looking at. So I did some research and discovered that Eraldo had just gifted me the "holy grail," to a parts manager that worked on commission. In all, only 65 Ducati Supermono motorcycles were made. And in my hands, was a shortlist of some of the owners of the bike that, dare I say, if not for... there would be no 916. No 999. No 1098. No Panigale. You 12 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM | AUGUST 2020

can chart the course from there. The Supermono was so radically different from everything else that Ducati had produced to that point. It represented the future of superbikes. It was one of those fabled, "Atlas shrugged" moments in motorcycle history. Nothing was the same after it. Needless to say, that was a very good quarter for my commission earnings. The parts included a selection of performance parts, exhausts, and engine components that would be vital to have on hand if you owned a very limited and extremely rare motorcycle. Understanding the significance of the Supermono, one can appreciate the importance of Ducati's Superleggera V4. Two very rare and special machines at two different points on the timeline, yet both share the mission... the same prime directive: Pushing the limits, forcing the paradigm to shift. Best, Allan @mrblackmoses

THE PRESS ROOM: INDUSTRY NEWS HARLEY-DAVIDSON BY RIZOMA - A FIRST-TIME COLLABORATION OFFERS NEW PARTS FOR A SELECTION OF H-D MODELS Harley-Davidson and Rizoma have collaborated, for the first time, to present a new collection of billet aluminum accessories to a selection of H-D models. While there is a considerable range of bikes that the collection is applicable for, special consideration was given to H-D's electric bike, the LiveWire. INCREASING THE STABILITY OF THE ARAI CORSAIR-X WITH THE NEW ARAI SPOILER EX2 If you are looking to increase the stability and aerodynamics while minimizing head wobble at speed, of your Arai Corsair-X helmet, Arai's new Spoiler EX2 is your answer. The Spoiler EX2 (MSRP $50.85) was engineered to increase the stability and aerodynamic efficiency of the helmet for the rider while traveling at speed. Visually, it does not disrupt the aesthetics of the Corsair-X as it follows the profile of the helmet. It is important to note the spoiler is an "add-on" component and is not permanently attached to the helmet, therefore it will not compromise the structure of the helmet that it is attached to if it experiences duress. Street riders will also note the difference of increased stability, as reported by Arai's test riders. Their remarks included, "stability in turbulent air (like when passing a truck) as well as reduced buffeting at the upper limits of legal street speeds." The Arai Spoiler EX2 will be available from your favorite Arai dealer in late September with an MSRP of $50.85. 16 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM | AUGUST 2020

DUCATI'S SUPERLEGGERA V4

18 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM | AUGUST 2020

WORDS: PETER JACKSON IMAGES: KEVIN WING AUGUST 2020 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM | 19

THE FIRST RIDE: DUCATI'S SUPERLEGGERA V4

THE $100,000 SUPERLEGGERA V4 IS A BIKE THAT WILL BECOME AN INSTANT CLASSIC ALONGSIDE THE 916 AND THE 750 SS GREEN FRAME. EVERY NOW AND then, a motorcycle comes along that serves two purposes— the first to show just what can be done when a manufacturer the size of Ducati lets its designers run free to create a no-compromise superbike. And the second, to show you’ve not tried hard enough in life because, chances are, you’ll never afford it. This is the rolling conundrum that is the Ducati Superleggera V4. A carbon-fiber, 224 hp, bi-plane winged masterpiece worth a staggering $100,000, the Superleggera (which translates from Italian to Superlight) is the finest superbike Ducati is capable of manufacturing for the public. Compared to the already lithe V4 R, the Superleggera weighs in at a claimed 52 pounds lighter (dry, Ducati refused to let us weigh the bike full of fuel), tipping the scales at a scant 335 pounds when fitted with the Racing Kit exhaust system and various bodywork components. That’s lighter than the WorldSBK racer of Scott Redding and Chaz Davies, and with a claimed 234 hp on tap, almost as powerful. 20 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM | AUGUST 2020

22 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM | AUGUST 2020

And it’s got more downforce to boot. At 186 mph, Ducati tells us the Superleggera’s carbon-fiber wings are producing 134 pounds of lateral downforce. That’s like having a rather plump 14-year-old sitting at the front of your bike as you rip down the front straight. Or Dani Pedrosa in leathers. On the track, the Superleggera V4 experience is nothing short of astonishing. If you’ve ever ridden a motorcycle with lightweight wheels, you’ll know the difference less unsprung weight makes to the agility of a chassis. Now couple that with the fact the front frame (chassis), subframe, swingarm and bodywork are all made from the same carbon-fiber as the wheels, and you’ll get somewhat of an idea where your $100-large goes. Our test bike was fitted with the Racing Kit, which bumped power 10 hp higher, so every one of the claimed 234 Italian stallions was at my disposal. Yet, despite this frankly mental horsepower number for a production bike, it wasn’t the most impressive aspect of the design. That belongs to how it gets around corners. The Superleggera V4 makes a standard Ducati Panigale V4 S feel decidedly cumbersome AUGUST 2020 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM | 23

when the road gets twisty. On a Superleggera, you can change direction as fast as the thought enters your head. The less overall mass combines with the elite Ohlins in the NPX25/30 pressurized fork and TTX36 shock, plus the best Brembos in the four-piston Stylema R calipers and race-spec MCS 19.21 radial master-cylinder to deliver you around corners faster than you’ve ever gone before. Scything through Rainey Curve down the tumbling Laguna Seca landscape, the Superleggera’s superior turn speed and feel through every point of contact—hands, feet, butt, legs—is nothing short of divine. This is what it feels like, I think to myself, to ride something the top one percent of the top one percent get to. Unleashing the raucous power of the 998cc V4 down Laguna Seca’s curving front straight is an experience in itself. Yes, it’s smack-yer-lips fast, but the way in which it’s handed to the tire is, dare I say it, nowhere near as intimidating as you might imagine. That’s thanks to the relationship between the motor, suspension, the all-new electronics and the wings, which combine in an awesome foursome to propel you into your near future at an astonishing rate. 26 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM | AUGUST 2020

THE SUPERLEGGERA V4 MAKES A STANDARD DUCATI PANIGALE V4 S FEEL DECIDEDLY CUMBERSOME WHEN THE ROAD GETS TWISTY.

You’ve got five different modes at your disposal - two preset track maps of A and B and three customizable maps. And if you so desire, you can have the same race dash as used by Andrea Dovizioso in MotoGP. That means you get no rev counter, although you will get a flashing light if you get greedy with the revs and the ECU wants you to shift, at which point you’re greeted with a glorious bang when you click a higher gear under full power like someone has just fired a gun. It’s all part of an experience that’s so far removed from a Panigale V4 S that it’s hard to believe they can both be called a superbike. The Superleggera V4 is the superbike, a bike that will become an instant classic alongside the 916 and 750 SS Green Frame. At $100,000, it better be awesome, but I’m happy to say, Ducati has absolutely outdone itself with this one. AUGUST 2020 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM | 31

THE FIRST RIDE: CHALLENGER DARK HORSE

36 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM | AUGUST 2020

WITH NO SHAME in their game, the Indian Challenger Dark Horse pulls no punches in its class. A full bagger with all of the trimmings, the Challenger Dark Horse packs levels of performance, that, for its weight class, comes as a pleasant surprise. The U.S. cruiser market has only two true manufacturers. There is no hiding the fact that Indian Motorcycle has been looking to take the number one spot from Harley-Davidson for several years. Indian’s latest effort to dethrone the theoretical king, the Challenger Dark Horse does more than live up to its namesake.

foot pounds of torque. Those are great numbers alone, however, the manner in which they are experienced is something to take note of. With a full tank of petrol, the Challenger Dark Horse tips the scales at 831 pounds. That's a lot of bike. However, the Challenger Dark Horse’s engine, with its overhead camshafts and four valves per cylinder plus its six-speed transmission delivers smooth, controllable, and reliable power. Smoothness is a key factor. You don't want to lug 800 plus pounds of machine with inconsistent output. It diminishes the experience. When I rolled on the Challenger Dark Horse's throttle, the response was consistent and predictable. My confidence and enjoyment in the Challenger Dark Horse grew with every twist of the wrist.

Powered by Indian’s 1768cc liquid water cooled PowerPlus V-twin engine, the Challenger Dark Horse produces an output of 122hp and 128- With power in check, the Challenger Dark Horse's

braking and suspension receive top marks. Indian opted for Brembo brake components to bring racespec stopping power to a bagger. In the front, you'll find a set of 320mm semi-floating rotors paired with radial-mounted 4 piston calipers. At the rear sits a single 298mm floating rotor and 2 piston caliper. The Challenger Dark Horse's front end suspension features 43mm inverted forks and a Fox hydraulic adjustable single shock at the rear. Performance stopping power coupled with an impressive suspension set-up produces unexpected but surely welcomed, dynamic handling. While it was very obvious that I was saddled behind the considerably sized front end of a bagger, the nimbleness of which the Challenger Dark Horse carved through and about a series of Pennsylvania back roads, resonated with the sentiments of being on a sportbike. Not at all the same, but 38 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM | AUGUST 2020

the Challenger Dark Horse's 31 degrees of lean angle and overall rideability is very impressive. The rideability factor is heavily attributed to Polaris' Smart Lean Technology. Smart Lean uses data and input from a 6-axis Bosch IMU and works in harmony with the Challenger's traction control, drag torque control and ABS with cornering control to provide a sporty ride experience. With features usually found on a sportbike, the Smart Lean Technology keeps you confidently grounded and in command of the road with 6-axis Bosch IMU, Dynamic traction control, ABS with cornering control, and Drag Torque Control. The Challenger Dark Horse is further highlighted by its three selectable ride modes: Rain, Standard,

and Sport. Each mode has its own setting in correlation to traction control and throttle mapping, selectable on the fly via the handlebar switch cluster, or via the 7-inch infotainment touch screen display. While the difference between Rain and Standard is subtle, Sport mode has a distinctive grunt and aggressive boost in response.

It was a vicious high side that saw the Champion break his right humerus or in public school terms, right arm. It was rumored that there was nerve damage that proved to be untrue. Marquez will remain in the hospital for 48 hours. A titanium plate was attached to his humerus and by all accounts should heal and possibly race at Brno in three weeks. Those are the facts. The rest? Well, that’s up to conjecture. If Superman AKA Marquez does return in three weeks to race, which is possible considering it is Marc Marquez, he’ll be at least 50 points down and in a pandemic shortened season… that’s almost impossible to make up, but notice how I wrote, “almost.” We’re talking Marc Marquez and we’re talking about the nature of motorcycle racing. Tell Mr. 8x that it is a short schedule year. Write it off and come back in 2021 stronger and ready to show those other fools exactly who the Man is! The problem with all this is that only a few of us know what it is like to be a World Champion. They operate on a different level, a level we have no idea what its like. Social media was flooded with people saying, “He should’ve just settled for the podium,” and “Just take the points…” These are the same people I’m guessing that try and tell others what to do in a relationship when they haven’t been in one since you could smoke on planes! Nobody knows as of the writing of this article what Marquez is going to do, but you got the feeling he’s going to give it a try. Champ gonna do what a champ gonna do. And that is the appeal of Marquez since he set foot onto the Grand Prix Stage in 2008. He’s everything you want your Champion to be: handsome, charming, witty, and fearless! It’s the fearlessness that captivates fans. His saves are legendary but it is the all-out assault for the victory that captivates us, as fans. Marquez’s hating to lose has provided the backdrop to fantastic finishes when mere mortals would’ve just settled for the points. It is also this fearlessness that leads us to where we are now. Sometimes people have to be saved from themselves and I believe Marc is 60 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM | AUGUST 2020

one of those people. He sets his bar to win at all costs and while it has worked for eight world titles its also taken a toll on his body. We have yet to see how his body responds when he approaches the age of 30. Whatever the decision that HRC decides is fine with me. If Marquez races, it bodes well for ratings. He is must-watch television! If not? To see a new face garner a championship will be exciting. My only beef which was briefly discussed was that if someone else does win the championship this year with Marquez out… Will they be considered a real champion? This asinine question shouldn’t even be addressed but since I have time on my hands… A championship is a championship, regardless of who participates. If all thirteen races are completed, that constitutes a championship, regardless of public or sometimes professional sentiment, treat it as such. As the old saying goes, “To finish first, first you must finish!” That bridge will be crossed soon enough and we can have this discussion in full but for now, all eyes are on the Champ. And for MotoGP fans, that’s kind of the way it should be. AUGUST 2020 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM | 63

THE ESSENCE OF BODY POSTION AUGUST 2020 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM | 73

IMPROVE YOUR SKILLS: BODY POSITION

74 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM | AUGUST 2020

I HAD A rider ask me recently what I felt was the most common problem that I encounter when teaching new riders at the racetrack. Without hesitation, I responded "body position and rider inputs to the motorcycle". Most experienced track instructors will agree. When you think about it, our riding is nothing more than the sum of the inputs that we give the motorcycle. These inputs come through the bars, tank, seat and pegs, our four primary contact points. Learning how to properly balance these four contact points is the key to riding with confidence. Teaching a rider the proper strategy through a corner is a comparatively simple task. Good instructors can explain the reasoning behind a particular line, point out the expected benefits and provide new reference points to follow. Even riders who have been through a given corner hundreds of times can easily alter their strategy and make rapid improvements. If they happen to make a mistake or lose focus, these riders will sometimes fall back into their old habits, but with proper focus they can get right back on track the next lap. The lack of relative repetition makes change easier, considering that if we visit a certain racetrack ten

times a year, we still might only go through a given corner 500 times over the course of that season. Alternatively, body position affects a rider every moment that he or she is on the track. Riders develop habits over the years that are reinforced tens of thousands of times, creating muscle memory that makes each rider's movements on the motorcycle automatic. This makes body position far more difficult to change. Imagine if someone tried to change the way the you walk. If, for instance, you tended to always walk on the inside of your foot, pronation, and a doctor wanted you to learn to be more balanced and move your weight to the center, it would take a lot of initial conscious thought to make that change. However, since people tend to take several thousand steps per day, this creates a lot of opportunity to "burn" in the new motion. If a person focused on walking that way for several days, it would soon start to feel natural. Then again, if during your first day a certain situation distracted you like being chased by a pit bull, you would run exactly as you had in the past, ignoring your new effort to stride properly. IMPROVE YOUR SKILLS: BODY POSITION

The difficulty in making body position changes lies in that riding a motorcycle quickly around a track requires significant concentration for most people. The "distractions" that can occur like making sure that you brake enough to make an apex, are present several times each lap. This is like trying to make changes to your gait while walking down a road that has pit bulls on the loose at every new house you pass by. The dogs are coming, and when they are nipping at your heels you cannot help but give them your full attention. The solution to this problem is simple, but it requires some sacrifice on your part. One that is often too much to bear for may riders. What is that sacrifice? Simply put, slow down. Walk down a street without any dogs! When implementing a change to body position or bike input, riders must slow down to a speed that removes any fear of making mistakes. Since body position is something that must be given attention the entire time that one is riding, it requires constant focus to ensure that it is done right. The most difficult part of this process is that it takes patience to learn a new posture on the bike and burn it into your 78 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM | AUGUST 2020

muscle's memory. The general scientific consensus is that it takes 3,000 to 5,000 repetitions of a pattern of movement to develop a subconscious response. The whole key to making the goal of implementing new body position successful is the word "subconscious". When we have reached this level of automatic response, we run properly even with the pit bull nipping at our heels, or the front wheel on the verge of tucking. The key is to have the patience that it takes to achieve those 3,000 to 5,000 repetitions. This leads us to the question, "how many laps is that?". Of course this is difficult to precisely quantify, as it's not as simple as multiplying the number of corners by the number of laps run. Riders make multiple moves and inputs per corner and must maintain proper position through the entire sequence. If we use a rough estimate of 4 to 5 moves per corner and assume that the average track has 12 corners, then we can conclude that it will take about 50 laps or 6 to 7 riding sessions, to achieve at least 3,000 reps.

IMPROVE YOUR SKILLS: BODY POSITION

This model is full of estimations and is by no means precise, but it does actually correlate with the time frame that instructors normally see for a rider to be able to implement a body position change and make it feel natural... about a full day on the track. This also explains why so many riders continue year after year with the same bad habits, as it's very difficult to have the discipline to focus on body position for an entire day. Most riders try a technique for a session or two and then give in to the urge to start riding hard, which is the equivalent of baiting the pit bulls by strapping a freshly cooked pork chop to each heel.

hold the bars and manipulate the controls. These riders wonder how the "fast guys" can ride so fast and make it look so easy. Truth be told, when you have proper riding technique, it is easy. If finding the secrets to riding blazingly fast appeals to you, then ask yourself if sacrificing one day at the track is worth a lifetime of improvement. Let me be clear, I'm not promising that you can learn all that there is to know in a day. What I can promise you is that the benefits derived from making the sacrifice needed to turn proper technique into subconscious action is absolutely worth the effort. There is nothing else you can do that will make more difference in your riding. However, if you give in to the urge to ride too fast too early, you'd better watch your back because the dogs are coming!

When it comes to making improvements on the racetrack, body position and bike inputs are everything. The importance of doing all that you can to maximize traction and increase rider feedback cannot be overemphasized. Many riders, in fact, most riders, create artificial ceilings Until next time... ride fast, ride safe! for speed as a result of how they sit on the seat, 80 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM | AUGUST 2020
