WELCOME TO SPRING EDITION SPIRIT QUARTERS I am very pleased to report that all the homes in Phase 2 of the redevelopment have been sold (Well Done to Nicky and her sales team!!) and also that Keepmoat will be starting the construction of the next phase of 233 homes in the Summer. However, the redevelopment is not the only thing that is making a difference in transforming the area, I have received very positive feedback from residents on the external wall insulation improvements, carried out by Whitefriars to over 650 homes, both in terms of how they look and, even more importantly, the difference it is making in reducing peoples fuel bills. I am looking forward to a further 200 homes in the area receiving the same works over the next 12 months. You cannot also fail to notice the fantastic quality of the newly refurbished Henley College, and so we felt it fitting to have an education focus within the magazine and highlight opportunities available to local young people from this excellent further education asset which sits right on our doorstep. We also showcase some of our young apprentices whom have come through our Shared Apprenticeship scheme and celebrate their successes and personal journeys on pages 6-7. I would also draw your attention to pages 4-5 that details the plans and proposals for the new play area that BKW will be installing over the coming months as well as developing a “play trail running alongside the cycleway/footpath of the River Sowe. There is a lot happening within the Spirit Quarters area, including summer community events and celebrations of which you can find out more about within this edition. I hope you all have an enjoyable, relaxing and safe summer.

Work on a new play area in Spirit Quarters is due to begin this Summer. The play area will be built on open space, near to Petitor Crescent and completes the first phase of the redevelopment of Spirit Quarters. Early in the regeneration programme, local children were asked what they would like to see in their new play area. These ideas have been transformed into a plan which includes a mega swing, slides and more natural elements of play such as stepping stones and balance beams. A special safety surface is being used in key areas, which will blend in with the natural green environment and the inclusion of ‘training buddies’ to encourage outdoor exercise at several trail points along the river footpath means that people of all ages can enjoy the improvements along the River Sowe. Local resident Ray Maher said “ We are really pleased to see the plans for the new play area taking shape. The kids are going to love it” The new play area will also link with other planned improvements to the green areas along the River Sowe including, natural play equipment and improvements to Chippy Fields, which will be delivered during the next phase of the redevelopment programme.

TRAINEE OF THE YEAR In 2010 William Mpoka attended an “Employment Open Day” held by Keepmoat in Coventry. The careers fair was part of a large scale housing regeneration project known as Spirit Quarters. As part of the project BKW are working in partnership with a number of key training providers in the Coventry area, these include Coventry City Council, Whitefriars Housing Group and BAM Construct UK. A training and employment sub group was established to ensure that the needs of the community were addressed with respect to opportunities available within the development.

• Ensuring all services are diverted and in place ready for construction to begin • Drainage aspects of the project •Ensuring Legal Agreements are in place (S104, S38 etc)

At the event William enquired about a short term work placement in an office environment whilst he awaited commencement of a Business Administration course at Henley College, Coventry.

William said “I never thought that attending the open day with friends would have resulted in such a good outcome. Keepmoat is a fantastic company to work for and has supported me fully. After my HNC I want to progress on to a BSc in Civil Engineering which will take a further two years.”

Keepmoat were able to provide a 6 week placement within the Land and Partnership department, supported by a grant from the European Social Fund, the placement proved so successful that William became directly employed by Keepmoat. In order to gain a full understanding of the company and the construction industry William undertook secondments in a number of departments including six months on-site with construction, three months with technical, commercial and finally back on the Spirit Quarters scheme working alongside the Sales Team. He consistently approached each of these with enthusiasm, commitment and a desire to learn. Following all his placements William chose to join the Technical team full time as a Technical coordinator. This involves a range of activities such as: • Project co-ordinating build from start to finish

He is also continuing his studies at Coventry University working towards an HNC in Civil Engineering equipping him with the skills and knowledge to progress in the industry.

William was voted Keepmoat Homes Trainee of the year 2011/2012.

Success for Shared Apprenticeship Scheme Coventry & Warwickshire Construction Shared Apprenticeship Scheme - an award winning partnership of BAM, Construct UK, Coventry City Council and local colleges - is celebrating another apprenticeship success – Kevin McShane. After taster courses and a bricklaying course at City College, Kevin McShane joined the scheme in 2011. Involving placements with Deeley Construction as well as Bovis Homes and Keepmoat Homes on the Spirit Quarters development; Kevin completed NVQ Level 2 & Diploma Level 2 in Bricklaying. On successful completion of his Apprenticeship, Kevin moved into self-employment with contractors on the Keepmoat site; not stopping there, he so impressed with his dedication and hard work that he was offered a permanent position with Keepmoat as an Assistant Site Manager. The pioneering partnership scheme backed by forward thinking employers such as Keepmoat, Bovis and Persimmon; was established in 2010 and was awarded ‘Apprenticeship Scheme of the Year 2013’ by National Federation of Builders. Cllr Lynette Kelly said: “I am incredibly pleased that Kevin has been able to progress so successfully through the Shared Apprenticeship Scheme. His story really demonstrates the success of intensive support and treating people as individuals achieves real results for both young people and the construction industry.” Graham Cash Chief Executive of BAM commented: “We have been lucky enough to see this scheme change lives of young people who had previously been unable to secure an apprenticeship in construction. We offer training, discipline and personal support; and present a ‘shop window’ for apprentices to employers”.

NOT JUST JOBS FOR THE BOYS 21 year old Jade Bennett is flying the flag for women in construction and has recently won an award for her efforts. Jade started her training with a six week Job Centre scheme with Whitefriars Housing, where she learned basic tiling, plastering and plumbing before moving on to a six month placement at Spirit Quarters with Keepmoat, through Coventry City Council’s Shared Apprentice Scheme. Jade is now well into a full-time plumbing apprenticeship with Keepmoat and is continuing to work on the Spirit Quarters redevelopment. At the launch of Coventry City Council’s Employer Hub; Cllr Lynnette Kelly, Coventry City Council Cabinet Member, congratulated Jade: “Jade has done incredibly well. Her determination has enabled her to secure her chosen career path and excel in it. The Outstanding Placement award proves this.” Neil Garrity, Apprentice and Trainee Co-ordinator at Keepmoat, said: “In my 30 years of experience

I have never come across anyone as dedicated and hardworking as Jade. Despite definite employment prospects in a site office, Jade pursued her passion to become a plumber. The only female on site ‘Jade proves that plumbing isn’t just a job for the boys’!” Jade said: “I gained experience volunteering, but struggled to find paid work. I am now earning and learning; enjoy site working, the guys have been great, and it’s fun; this award is just the icing on the cake.” Keepmoat is expected to deliver almost 240 new homes at Spirit Quarters over the next four years in Wood End, Henley Green, Manor Farm and Deedmore neighbourhoods. Jade added: “Spirit Quarters development is a great place to work. I should be qualified by completion: I will see the scheme come to life as people move into new homes that I have helped build.”

FROM THIS TO THIS!

COUNCILLOR KEVIN MATON Ward Councillor for Henley ward was re-elected in the local election in May and is now the cabinet member for Business, Enterprise and Employment. With lots going on in the city it’s an important role at the Council and Kevin said: “I’m really delighted with my new appointment. It’s a very wide remit but one I am looking forward to. I’ve always had great support from the local community and I’m looking forward to continuing to work with Moat House Trust on their employment agenda. The next year will be an important one for Coventry with lots of regeneration work underway or about to start. I will be working hard to ensure the benefits are felt across the city because everyone knows the biggest factor in leading a healthy and successful life is having a job. My Cabinet role will address issues right across the City but I know the community here will help me keep my feet on the ground and I will not lose sight of the importance of issues in this part of Coventry. There’s clearly a lot to do and it will be a challenge but it’s definitely a challenge that I’m up for.”

You have probably heard the story about water being turned into wine, only this time staff from WM Whitefriars Housing have turned a generous gift of wine into a donation of food for the Food Bank at the City Mission in Wood End. Becke Ayres, the new Regeneration Manager for the Spirit Quarters area said “ The Food Bank provides a lifeline for people in need but it relies on donations from members of the public. The raffle organised by the Regeneration Team has helped to raise the profile of the Food Bank with other colleagues across Whitefriars and also raised money to make donation to the store cupboard”. If you would like to make a donation to the Food Bank, the Regeneration Office in Hillmorton Road is also a collection point for store-cupboard items such as tea, coffee, sugar, long life milk and tinned food. INTERGENERATIONAL LITTER PICK

SPIRIT QUARTERS FC As the season ends, it’s timely to showcase the success of our Spirit Quarters Football Club and the positive first season they have had.

On Tuesday April 17th a litter pick was organised by the Crafty Kids Club and Tots and Toast.

As this snap shot of the league table shows the team who play in the Coventry & District Sunday league finished a healthy 4th positionjust missing out by 1 point on joint second place and promotion to Senior 2 Adults.

Parents were keen for their children to learn about the impact of litter on the environment and wanted to encourage them to take pride in keeping their neighbourhood clean. Pam and Graham Randle members of ‘Friends of Moat House Park’ who work very hard to keep the park clean and tidy, joined over 20 children and parents with the challenge.

Captain, Nathan Morrison said “we soon settled into the season with strong existing and new players and just missed out on end of season promotion. We competed in two cup competitions reaching the semi-finals in one which we should have won! We intend to come back even stronger for 14/15 and continue to work hard to secure that much deserved promotion”

In just two hours they collected over 10 bags of litter and rubbish people had dropped. Children were informed of the consequences of dropping litter and why it is important to put it in the bin or take it home.

Wednesday training sessions at Moat House Leisure and Neighbourhood Centre certainly paid off and contributed to the success of the first season.

Suzanne McBride said: The children were very proud of their achievements and certificates were given to all children who helped out.

Chair of Spirit Quarters Football Club John Samuels said “we are looking to build on last seasons success and improve our league position for 2014/15”

Pam Randle said ‘It was lovely to see so many young children willing to give up their time to help keep the park clean. The children worked very hard and FOMH Park would like to thank them for their efforts.

Interested players can call Nathan 0774805 8652 or John 07580 501883.

CRAFTY KIDS CLUB AND TOTS AND TOAST EASTER HOLIDAY FAMILY ACTIVITIES The Crafty Kids Club and Tots and Toast joined together to organise family activities over the Easter holidays. The sessions held at MH&NC included plaster models, Easter Crafts, games and challenges. They also created an Easter wall display for the centre. Each day parents brought in packed lunches for an outdoor picnic. The children were given reward cards to earn stickers for positive behaviour and being kind and helpful. The reward for collecting six stickers was a day out at Coombe Abbey. Suzanna Mc bride said…………”The family trip to Coombe was great. We played cricket, ball games, and hide and seek. We fed the ducks and the children enjoyed the swings and adventure play area. Everyone enjoyed a picnic and an ice cream. It was a long day but everyone enjoyed themselves.” Sam from Tots and Toast said. Everyone has helped out, especially the children who have enjoyed playing together. The children loved it when they earned a sticker for being kind and helpful. Carol Speed from MHCT… ..”Parents worked very hard to organise the activities it was a great success and they should all feel very proud of their achievements.”

CONNECTING COMMUNITIES AT AN AUTISM AWARENESS DAY Autism is a lifelong condition that affects communication, thought process, and social and emotional interaction. Since the first diagnosis in 1943 Autism Spectrum disorder now affects over 5000,000 people of all ages in the UK. As this number is expected to rise, the community wanted to do something to raise awareness. April is the nationally recognised month for Autism Awareness. PCSO Sharon Horner 30842 and PCSO Horton – Barr 30841, along with Moat House Community trust and Henley’s Restaurant, Henley College and ASDA hosted a coffee morning which raised £70:43. A second event, Autism awareness family fun day was held at Castle Wood School on Tuesday 22nd April Over 100 people enjoyed a variety of activities including a road safety challenge, arts and crafts, an egg hunt and a bouncy castle. Children learnt basic martial arts skills followed by a disco. PCSO Horner said. The event was a great success and everyone enjoyed themselves. It would not have happened without the combined support of MHCT, Castle Wood School and the community volunteers from Tots and Toast and Crafty Kids Club, plus support from ASDA and Whitefriars Regeneration Team.

DERBY VISIT Local residents have been sharing their experience of working with Keepmoat Homes (warts and all!) with representatives from OSCAR, a resident group based in Osmaston in Derby, where Keepmoat are the chosen developer for a new regeneration scheme. OSCAR said “We took away some great ideas that have been pioneered from the community in Coventry. We were made to feel very welcome, had a great speech and then had a walk around the estate. OSCAR is very grateful that the residents in Coventry took the time (on a Saturday) to accommodate us for the day, including drinks and a superb lunch and to show us what’s been achieved in the City of Coventry by Partnership working”. Spirit Quarters residents Sandra Smith and Lorna Abbot gave their views on how the day went. The weather was glorious, the visitors were surprised on how much had been achieved by all concerned. They were shown the new build, homes and the demolition sites. It was fantastic to meet residents who were going through the same process. It has been a learning curve for all of us and it made me proud of Woodend. Met nice friendly residents from Derby. They were interested on how we felt about the noise, new builds. We told them we didn’t notice anything as time went on. Walking around Woodend showing the new and revamped houses. It made me feel proud to live in Woodend, we all had a happy day. The sun shone and it kept dry.

RIT Y C OVENTRY C HA Y THE QUEEN REC OGNISED B Coventry City Mission and it’s volunteers have been awarded a very special award by Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II. Following a rather indepth process, which has taken over six months, they have been awarded the QAVS - Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service (The equivalent of an MBE for voluntary groups) The award recognises the outstanding contribution that a group has made within its communities and the Mission has been given this accolade for all the work they have been involved in over the last thirty years. The Mission, based in The Wood End area of Coventry, is a project-based charity which runs around 14 different projects across the year. It works to make a positive impact on five different forms of poverty (Economic, educational, emotional, social and spiritual) within the city and supports individuals and families who have to face many forms of severe deprivation. (www. covcitymission.org.uk) Executive Director, Darren Burgess, said ‘I am thrilled that the Mission and our volunteers, both

past and present, have been recognised in this way. We are only able to continue the work we do in supporting disadvantaged individuals and families across our city with the support of our fantastic volunteers. From serving in our foodbank centre, to supporting people as they aim to return to the workforce; from supporting our youth groups, lunch clubs and holiday programmes, to being a listening ear through our telephone listening service(Crossline), our volunteers play a huge part in the success achieved by the Mission over the last thirty years.’ There will be an official event where The LordLieutenant of the West Midlands, Paul Sabapathy, will officially present the Mission with the award. This event will be organised for some time between September and December, we hope to have as many of the CCM team (past and present) at the event as possible.
