O
utside the dominant Triple Eight and championship aspirants Ford Performance Racing only one other team has struck success at Barbagallo since 2008. Those telling statistics are a strong indication that FPR and Triple Eight are heavily fancied to continue the rout in the west. Based on the 14 races conducted at the 2.42km circuit since 2008, T8 have netted seven wins with FPR clinching six wins. Brad Jones Racing is the odd one out with Jason Bright claiming one heat win when he split the wins of Jamie Whincup in 2011. Crucially FPR struck top form at the previous round when Mark Winterbottom snared two of the four heats at Pukekohe with Bright winning the opening race. Winterbottom has hit the lead in the points race with FPR looking more and more likely they have the firepower to launch its most potent assault on the title.

In terms of drivers performances at circuits, Winterbottom has netted four wins at Barbagallo, equal fourth most successful behind Craig Lowndes who has no peers with 14 victories at the circuit. FPR has previously flagged the fact that it will not upgrade its package until after the Perth round. However, going on the team’s strong performances around the hectic Symmons Plains, Security Winton and New Zealand schedules, it willAll-In-One enter Event 5 on the calendar with sufficient confidence in its baseline set-up to maintain its cracking form.

wo of the most successful drivers at the Barbagallo circuit over the last six years, Jamie Whincup and Mark Winterbottom are dominating betting markets for the Perth 400. Whincup enters Barbagallo winning the past two races at the track after his teammate Craig Lowndes won the opening heat there last year. Since 2008 Whincup has won five races at the circuit while Winterbottom has the next most wins on four with Lowndes claiming two heat wins in that period. As the Red Bull Racing Australia team finds itself with a weakened domination, Whincup is at the slightly more liberal price of $3.75. Winterbottom has assumed the second line of betting at $4.50 with Ford’s man expected to come in for heavy support. Lowndes is assessed a $6 chance for the

aving shot to the top of championship standings Mark Winterbottom believes he can afford to be less aggressive when the title battle reconvenes in Western Australia this weekend. The Ford Performance Racing driver has enjoyed a resurgence in the last two rounds held at Winton and Pukekohe by recording three wins from the last five races. Frosty’s run of form has seen him climb to the top of the championship standings with a 107 point advantage over Red Bull Racing Australia’s Craig Lowndes. Its the first time the 32-year-old has led the championship heading into an event since Winton 2008 almost six years ago. The strong start to the season has left Winterbottom in relatively unchartered waters which is in stark contrast compared

to the tale of last season. The FPR man spent majority of last year relentlessly trying to reel in the championship leader. Although he admits his new championship leader status will not alter his targets in Perth, he says the aggression behind the wheel can be toned down as a result of the points buffer. This time last year Frosty trailed championship leader Jamie Whincup by 292 points. “Its the best start to a season I’ve ever had,” Winterbottom told Speedcafe.com “It doesn’t change your approach but it stops you from being too aggressive I guess which is a good way to go racing because you have that luxury of being able
to drop a race. “Its actually good to know you are actually in it and not always chasing and clawing back points. Whereas if you are behind if you are a 100 points down and you have a bad day you are 150 or 200 points down which really hurts. “If you have a bad day and you still come out 10 points down its not bad way to go racing. It gives you a bit of a comfort zone but its a good way to go racing. “Last year we were 450 points down so the only way to fightback was to win races. It is good to have that buffer at this point of the season but it can chop and change so quickly. “I think Perth will be good for us because

in the past its been not too bad. We keep try to do what we are doing. “You can’t really defend because there are 20 or so races to go. If it was the last round it would be a different story but its way too early for that.” V8 Supercars 2014

With eight different winners in just 13 races so far, the V8 Supercars championship is set for another extremely competitive year. The rise in competition has made the task of winning the V8 Supercars title increasingly more challenging. For Winterbottom the coveted V8 Supercars crown is the last box he has to tick in the category following his Bathurst 1000 triumph last year. This year Frosty has given himself a fighting chance after such a strong start but he believes consistency will be the crucial factor in deciding the 2014 champion. While victories are the results remembered vividly, its the performances on tough days throughout the year which will be vital, according to Winterbottom. “There are so many different race winners this year, its really competitive out there,” added Winterbottom “The way to win this championship is not to win every race but on your bad days finish strongly because the depth of the field is so big. You have to survive on those bad days. “Two years ago a bad day was a top five. “Its the bad days that is going to win it for people. The bad days where you do a good job don’t really get highlighted but it those results which will win the championship. “Its not the glory wins it is those fifth places that doesn’t often get talked about which is the key.”

Pepsi Max Ford driver Mark Winterbottom holds a 107-point lead over Craig Lowndes heading to Barbagallo, but a more important statistic is how long it has been since Winterbottom arrived at a V8 Supercars Championship event as the points leader.
The factory Ford driver has, amazingly, not led the Championship heading into an event for just under six years – Winton in August 2008 was the last time. It should be noted, however, that he briefly took the Championship lead mid-way through the 2012 Sydney Motorsport Park weekend (after the Saturday race) but didn’t retain the points lead at the end of that event on the Sunday. Winterbottom is in a much stronger position too than this time last year – with four events completed in 2013 he was ninth in the points and trailed leader Jamie Whincup by 292 points – almost the equivalent of a full weekend’s worth of points.

Red Bull Racing Australia’s Craig Lowndes could break Mark Skaife’s record for most race wins at a single track in the history of the ATCC/V8 Supercars Championship at Barbagallo.
Lowndes has won 14 races at the Western Australian circuit (though only two of them have come since 2000), which is one short of Skaife’s impressive 15 race wins at the now defunct Oran Park in Sydney. Also, with 75 consecutive finishes in V8SC races from 2012 Hamilton onwards, he’s now just 20 behind the record of 95 – held by Russell Ingall, who finished every race he started from Eastern Creek 2004 through to Pukekohe 2007.

Triple Eight Race Engineering and Ford Performance Racing have dominated Barbagallo Raceway in recent years.
Between them the teams have won 13 of the last 14 V8 Supercar races held there since 2008 – FPR with six wins, Triple Eight seven. The only team to break that streak was Brad Jones Racing with Jason Bright claiming a win in the second race in 2011.

Jamie Whincup may have had tough weekends at Winton and Pukekohe, but history says he will bounce back strongly at Barbagallo.
The five-time Champion has finished on 11 of the last 12 podiums in Perth from 2008 onwards. In that time he’s claimed five wins, four seconds and two thirds. Whincup sits sixth in the points, 166 behind leader Mark Winterbottom. It’s the furthest behind the championship leader he has been since September 2010 – when he trailed James Courtney by 179 points at the completion of that year’s L&H 500 at Phillip Island.

Three of the top five drivers in the 2014 V8 Supercars Championship pointscore have never finished on the podium at Barbagallo in their V8 Supercars career, let alone won a race.
Third-placed Fabian Coulthard, fourth-placed James Courtney and fifth-placed Shane van Gisbergen each have a career best finish of fourth in Perth.

Having made his V8SC debut at Sandown in 2006, Perkins’ career best finish remains a fifth-place alongside Tim Slade in the 2010 Phillip Island 500. Perkins hasn’t competed in a V8SC event at Barbagallo since 2009, however he won a race there in last year’s Dunlop Series round. He remains the only driver in the 2014 field without a top 10 result in qualifying so far this season – his best remains an 11th at Symmons Plains.

He may not have quite won a V8 Supercars Championship race yet this year, but Volvo’s Scott McLaughlin is clearly the best qualifier of the season so far.
With two ARMOR ALL Pole Positions in a row at Pukekohe and three for the season, the Kiwi has only missed out on qualifying in the top 10 once in the 13 races so far – no other driver has achieved that feat. He’s averaging a qualifying position of 4.54 and has more top five qualifying efforts – 10 – than any other driver in the field. The last time a Volvo claimed pole position at Barbagallo was 1986, when John Bowe claimed his very first ATCC/V8SC career pole in a 240 Turbo.

Three drivers – Nick Percat, Dale Wood and Robert Dahlgren – have never competed in a V8 Supercars Championship event at Barbagallo Raceway.
However, both Percat and Wood have competed there in recent years in the Dunlop Series. Wood won a race in 2013 and finished second for the round, while Percat competed in the DVS in Perth in 2011 and 2012.

Kiwi racer Barry joins bumper Perth V8 Ute field ew Zealand V8 Ute Racing Series driver Sam Barry will join the bumper field for the next round of the Australian V8 Ute series at Barbagallo. Barry will take command of Jack Elsegood’s Ford that will be run by Peters Motorsport alongside accomplished team-mates Wayne Wakefield and Kris Walton. “Having 32 Utes in the race is going to be a huge challenge for me, as qualifying is going to be so important,” Barry said. “My goal for the weekend is to finish all the races and finish in the top half of the field.” Series leader David Sieders is chasing back-to-back round wins at Perth where he also was a last start winner. The New South Welshman is leading the ARMOR ALL Driver’s Championship following the torrid opening round in Adelaide. “I think I felt more pressure last year as I’d never won there in a Ute before,” Sieders said. “So it was good to get that monkey off my back. Now that I’ve done it I know I can hopefully do it again and I will be a bit more relaxed. Thirsty Camel Racing’s Craig Dontas, currently running second in the Series, is looking for his first win since Winton in 2012. “I am feeling very confident, we’ve had two very successful test days and we’re in a good space and will ride the wave of confidence for sure,” Dontas said. “The track is technical and every year it changes.” Two-time V8 Ute champion Ryal Harris will be looking for a strong performance in a new All Purpose Pest Ford. “Most definitely we’re out to win. We had a test day the other day, in a new car so everyone is excited. “We’re on the back foot chasing points so my main goal is getting back on track and getting into the top five in points. Local driver Rhys McNally, third at his home round last year, is looking to step up to the podium again. “It won’t be an easy run but obviously I won’t have to worry about learning the track and we’ll give it all we’ve got,” said McNally. Other local drivers in the mix include General Carrying Racing’s Matt Nolan, Rick Gill (Rick Gill Motorcycle’s owner) and Auto One Racer Adam Marjoram.
