The streets of Sydney Olympic park have thrown up their fair share of surprises since the Sydney Telstra 500 kicked off three years ago, but it’ll take something extraordinary to stop Jamie Whincup’s title charge this weekend. While Craig Lowndes may have had Whincup’s measure across the Queensland Raceway, Phillip Island and ultimately Bathurst weekends, the younger of the two TeamVodafone tearaways has emphatically proven over the last three events that he remains the man when it comes to modern-day V8 Supercars racing.

Should he seal the deal this weekend, a third crown will move Whincup to equal status on the all-time champions list with Lowndes and Peter Brock, leaving only Ian Geoghegan (5), Dick Johnson (5), Mark Skaife (5), Bob Jane (4), Allan Moffat (4) and Jim Richards (4) with more.

Considering just how close Whincup came to winning the title in both 2007 and 2010, to think that the 28-year-old could have been in a position to equal the all-time record after just eight full-time campaigns is quite extraordinary.

Adrian Having led Dick Johnson Racing to last year’s V8 Supercars Championship with James Courtney, Adrian Burgess was a high-profile addition to TeamVodafone for the 2011 season. Relieving Triple Eight Race Engineering director Roland Dane from his team management duties, Burgess has overseen another vintage year for the red and silver cars. After wrapping up the Teams’ Championship at Sandown, Jamie Whincup and Craig Lowndes head into this weekend as the only drivers in contention for the Drivers’ title. With 188 points separating the pair, and 300 to be awarded this weekend, Speedcafe. com’s Grand Rowley spoke to Burgess about TeamVodafone’s approach to the finale. SPEEDCAFE: With Jamie and Craig the only two drivers capable of winning the title this weekend, it must be a tense time within the team. As the team leader, how are you approaching the Sydney race? ADRIAN BURGESS: It’s situation normal for us. Obviously, we want to do well as a team. We will go there and try and show people

what we can do. We want to win a couple of races. With that in mind, Craig and Jamie still have some unfinished business, so we need to give both drivers an equal opportunity to fight it out on the track. First and foremost, they are driving for TeamVodafone, and we want the best result for the team, but as we know, whoever comes out on top will have the privilege of wearing the number one next year. SPEEDCAFE: Would you have preferred that the title was decided heading into

the final race? BURGESS: No, I don’t think so. You have to think of (what’s best for) the event and the championship as well. We are very happy and very privileged where it can only be one of our two cars. I don’t think any championship wants to see the championship sewn up that early that the last couple of events are meaningless. That’s not good for anyone. At the moment, the points structure is a good format. The public has a chance to see two people at the top of their game go in

Burgess SPEEDCAFE: So after such a dominant ‘team’ season, what is your highlight for the year in your first year at the team? BURGESS: It’s difficult to pick one thing out. It’s nice to know that we go to the last round knowing we have it wrapped up. Only our two can win. That’s a proud moment. It will be a special weekend. To be honest, I hope Sydney is our highlight weekend.

there in good cars with something on the line to fight for. It’s important for the event, important for V8 Supercars, it’s important for the public, and they are going to get to see a good fight between two of the best drivers. SPEEDCAFE: It’s a circuit that this team has not had any success at in the past. TeamVodafone is yet to stand on the podium. Is there a reason for the lack of results there? BURGESS: I don’t think you can put any one reason on why they haven’t had a result in Sydney. Each year, there has been different

circumstances. They’ve been in good positions, but for whatever reason, things haven’t gone their way. We’re back in hard tyre, street circuit mode. I don’t see any reason why we can’t go there and win the races. There are things which happen that are out of your control, and I think the last couple of years, that is what has happened to them. TeamVodafone has proved over the years that it doesn’t have bogey circuits. That’s just not the make-up of this team. I can’t see why we can’t go there and challenge the top spot.

If I had to pick out one meeting, Townsville on Sunday was a particularly good race – just how we responded to the mid-meeting tyre rule change (TeamVodafone was one of many teams to initially overlook an anomaly in the supplementary regulations that allowed the set of soft tyres used in Saturday’s race to be re-used on Sunday). For us, we showed we had better tyre life. We committed to using it (Saturday’s soft tyres) again the next day– I don’t think too many people really ventured into that, and it worked. That showed that not only the car, but the drivers and the engineers optimised the rules to our advantage and made it work. We came away with a one-two result, we were in the camouflage colours, and that made it a memorable result, especially for me.

The Saturday Showdown Just as he did in 2008 and 2009, Jamie Whincup could well wrap up this year’s V8 Supercars Championship crown on the penultimate day of the season. Heading into the weekend with a 188 point margin over team-mate Craig Lowndes, a top four finish for Whincup on Saturday will seal the

title, even if the #888 Commodore wins the race. And what if Lowndes does not win? Speedcafe.com’s table below shows the worst position in which Whincup can finish on Saturday and still seal the title, relative to Lowndes’ finishing position.

Sydney Olympic Park Street Circuit

The 2011 Sydney Telstra 500 marks three years since the Sydney Olympic Park Street Circuit was first constructed. The 3.5km course runs around the area made famous by the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games, with ANZ Stadium located in the middle of the circuit. The 13-turn lap includes the widest (Australia Avenue) and narrowest (Edwin Flack Avenue) pieces of road on the V8 Supercars Championship calendar, and is made up almost entirely of chicanes and slow-speed

90-degree corner complexes. The 2011 Sydney Telstra 500 will continue the event’s tradition of deciding the V8 Supercars Champion, after Jamie Whincup and James Courtney sealed the 2009 and 2010 crowns respectively at Homebush. No driver has multiple race wins to their name at this circuit, with Garth Tander (Toll Holden Racing Team), James Courtney (Jim Beam Racing), Jonathon Webb (Mother Energy Drinks Racing) and Lee Holdsworth (Fujitsu Racing) sharing the spoils so far.

The Sydney Olympic Park Street Circuit is a really tough one for our cars. It has a mix of high speed straights and slow complexes that make it very, very hard on brakes - even with the hard tyre. The races in Tasmania a couple of weeks ago really emphasised the difference that the two tyre compounds can make to your brake usage, so there’ll be a few teams glad we’re running on the hards around here.

Last year’s Sunday race was a great example of that. There was a Safety Car on Lap 44 which was outside everybody’s windows, but those who took it really gained an advantage later on. In that situation you have to weigh up the advantages and disadvantages of stopping, including the potential to have to queue one of your cars - which we’ve seen a lot of lately. Because the hard tyre degradation isn’t very high, the races will be decided by fuel strategy more than anything else. Getting one extra lap through better consumption could be what makes the difference. Communications A problem that a lot of teams had in Sydney last year was radio communications. We almost had no communications from Turn 6 back to about Turn 11, so you could make the call

but you wouldn’t know if they got it or not. It’s difficult because you don’t know what you’re going to get in the way of interference. We had a car parking company on our radio last year for half the race. It’s just another one of those things that get thrown at you that can affect your day. Surface We’ve seen a bit of surface break-up in the first couple of years in Sydney, but the people who have been doing the circuit repairs have come up with a good bitumen that, if it’s put in early enough, does a good job. We saw very little actual track break up on the Gold Coast this year, what we saw was actually a lot of rubber build-up, and I’m pretty sure they’ll be on top of that in Sydney.

With a 188-point advantage over teammate Craig Lowndes, Jamie Whincup is closing in on his third V8 Supercars Championship in the last four years. If Whincup can seal the title he will be just the second man in history after Hall of Famer Norm Beechey (1965 and 1970) to win the Australian Touring Car Championship/V8 Supercars Championship in both a Ford and a Holden. Finishing fourth or better in Saturday’s race in Sydney (should Lowndes win) or simply finishing in front of Lowndes will guarantee Whincup the title. Collecting 112 points over the weekend is enough for Whincup to be crowned champion should Lowndes win both races. Whincup is guaranteed a top two championship finish, which will be the fifth straight year he has recorded a top-two result in the series. No

other driver has achieved that in the history of the ATCC/V8SC since it became a series of races rather than being decided – as it was from 1960 to 1968 – by a single race. On the flip side, Lowndes is guaranteed his seventh-straight finish in the top four in the championship since 2005. He was runner-up in 2005 and 2006 in addition to his three titles in 1996, 1998 and 1999. Triple Eight Race Engineering is guaranteed a driver finishing in the top two in the championship for the seventh straight season (2005-2011). This is a record, the previous best streak being five by the Holden Racing Team from 1998 to 2002. Whincup could tie or break his own record for most pole positions in a season. His record from last year is 10 and he currently has nine with two more available in Sydney.

The Sydney Telstra 500 has proven to be the most difficult event to predict over its short two-year history. Amazingly, 10 different drivers have taken the 12 available podium positions across the four races and two years. Mark Winterbottom and Jason Bright are the only repeat podium finishers. All three-podium finishers on Saturday last year started outside the top 10 in a wild race affected by rain – Jonathon Webb (21st), Jason Bright (28th) and Rick Kelly (14th) all survived to score some silverware.

Just as the Sydney event has become one of the most unpredictable, it has also proven to be the biggest car-breaker of the V8 Supercars Championship. Just 63% of starters have managed to be classified as finishers in the four V8 Supercar races held across 2009 and 2010 (74 finishers from 116 starters). In comparison the finishing rates (taken from 2010 and 2011 results) for street circuits are 90% (Townsville), 88% (Adelaide), 79% (Hamilton) and 77% (Gold Coast). Just 15 of the 29 starters made it to the finish on Saturday in Sydney last year, while just 16 cars were left running at the end of the Sunday race in 2009.

The Bottle-O Racing Team’s Paul Dumbrell will make his last start as a full-time driver in Sydney. Dumbrell makes his 129th ATCC/V8SC event start and sits 22nd on the all-time list. He is a two-time pole-sitter with one race win to his credit (2010 Sandown) in a career that started at Symmons Plains in 1999. Dumbrell also has 270 ATCC/V8SC races under his belt heading into the Sydney Telstra 500 weekend.

There’s a range of drivers competing in the Sydney Telstra 500 who could claim it as their home race. While no current V8 Supercar drivers call Sydney home, plenty were born and/or grew up in the area. Orrcon Steel FPR Falcon driver Mark Winterbottom grew up in Doonside while Jana Living Racing’s Jason Bargwanna is originally from Sydney. James Courtney (Penrith), Jonathon Webb (Castle Hill), Warren Luff, Michael Caruso and Tim Slade (Hornsby) were all born in Sydney as well.

Cheque your stats Jamie Whincup has scored the Armor All Pole Award nine times so far in 2011, receiving a cool $55,000 from Armor All in the process. Two more poles this weekend will surpasst the all-time season record of 10, set by Whincup himself last year.

DayTime CRAIG ON SYDNEY I end up spending a lot of time in Sydney throughout the year because a lot of our sponsors are based there, so I’ve got to know the city pretty well. It’s a great place to visit with plenty to see and do around the harbour on any given day. If you ever get a chance, the Harbour Bridge climb is a must do. Homebush may not be right in the city centre, but it’s easily accessible by train, which means you can enjoy the city once the racing is done.

CRAIG ON THE SYDNEY TELSTRA 500 The Homebush event is the last race of the season and a great event for the finale. In a lot of ways it’s very similar to the Clipsal 500, which is an event I really enjoy as well, although I have had much more luck in Adelaide. Skaifey has designed an incredibly tough circuit, which tests us as drivers more than most tracks we go to. Neither myself nor TeamVodafone have had much luck at the event over the past two years, so we’ll be pushing hard to try and change that this year.

CRAIG’S ESSENTIAL TRAVEL ITEMS Being on the road so much throughout the year can be tough at times, so you need to make sure you have everything you need.

Toshiba Laptop – Having my laptop with me means I can work on the go. There is plenty of down time when I’m travelling, so having the laptop is a great help.

4 Gym gear – Just because I’m on the road doesn’t mean my training stops. I always make the most of the hotel gyms to keep on top of my training.

This weekend marks a return to the scene of Courtney’s 2010 championship triumph. Although having only won one race since, Courtney proved in the wet at Sandown that he has lost none of his sublime ability. Should enjoy the move back to the hard tyre for Sydney, but is likely to again struggle to challenge the top five on sheer speed.

Car #5 has shown great speed and consistency over the past three events - proving that FPR has overcome its previous issues with the soft tyres. Although the way the changes translate back to the hard tyre is somewhat of a question mark, expect Winterbottom to again threaten for victory here.

Has shadowed, and occasionally beaten Winterbottom over the last three events, and heads to Homebush in an identical position to his team-mate. Cracking it for his first FPR win here would double as a great feat at Telstra’s own event, and a clear warning that Davison will be a title contender in 2012.

Is one of four drivers gunning for third in the points standings, and out to avenge the last-lap fuel shortage that derailed a bold attempt at a maiden race win here last year. Caruso scored just one top 10 finish in the 17 races between Adelaide and Phillip Island, but has now chalked up a top 10 at each of the last four events.
