Looking back... and forward The unveiling of several ‘retro’ liveries celebrating the 50th year of the Bathurst classic has dominated the lead-up to the race this year, and ensures it’ll be a rather unique looking field that forms up on the grid at 1030 on Sunday morning. It’s a real credit to all of the sponsors involved in making each one of the 300km/h tributes possible. It’s one thing for the category and the teams to be embarrassing the race’s history, but to have the likes of Vodafone, Norton, Orrcon, Trading Post and The Bottle-O come to the party says a lot about both the companies themselves and the light in which Bathurst is regarded. For many, the period look of the cars will bring memories of yesteryear flooding back, and there are few better places to tell a good ‘remember when...’ yarn than on Mount Panorama. Hopefully members of the younger generations not so familiar with the deeds of Firth, Moffat, Brock and co will soak a fair bit of it in. With the Car of the Future opening the category back up to more than just two makes next year, it’s perhaps a better time than any in which to shine a light on the history of the sport beyond the recent Falcon vs Commodore battles. At the same time, the final events of the 2012 season are a time to enjoy the last days of a current rule package that has served the category incredibly well. The stage is set for a thrilling fight between TeamVodafone and Ford Performance Racing this weekend, with a day-long battle in the offing that’ll require smarts, as much as speed, in order to take the trophy. The move to the more quickly consumed E85 fuel (2009) and the insistence that primary drivers stay in their own cars (2010) have provided very different Bathurst 1000s in the last couple of years. Let’s see what this one has in store...

Race 21 - Bathurst I Livery

The Stickers 1000 There’ll be plenty of new looks on the grid this weekend at the Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000, headlined by a selection of ‘retro’ liveries in celebration of the 50th year of the race. Others such as Kelly Racing will mark the milestone in more subtle ways, adding a touch of gold to its Jack Daniel’s Racing entries while making a ‘new retro’ scheme for its Fair Dinkum Holden.

Race 21 - Bathurst I Cover Story

A managed revenge TeamVodafone team manager Adrian Burgess leads the team’s quest for its fifth Bathurst in seven years

F

or all of TeamVodafone’s dominance last year, the team’s failure to win the Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000 ensured that 2011 would be remembered as merely a semi-successful season for the Holden squad. The team will return to the Mountain stronger than this weekend, entering the event on a nine race winning streak. Two new co-drivers have been recruited in the

shape of Paul Dumbrell and Warren Luff, both of whom performed spectacularly well at the Sandown 500. Speedcafe.com’s Stefan Bartholomaeus spoke to TeamVodafone team manager Adrian Burgess to get the inside line on the team’s position heading into the weekend. SPEEDCAFE: Adrian, if we start by winding back the clock 12 months, Bathurst 2011

was your first 1000 with the team. There were three cars in it all day, two of them being yours, and you didn’t get the trophy. What was the feeling like in the garage at the end of the day? ADRIAN BURGESS: We were just very disappointed with the outcome. As you say, we had two cars with a very good shot at winning it and neither of them did, so clearly we didn’t achieve the objective.

7

Jamie (Whincup)’s car obviously had an electrical problem which crippled them from early on. I feel we’d done a decent job of managing the issue for 50 or so laps, but ultimately we didn’t get the car to the finish (at the front), so that was obviously disappointing. Craig (Lowndes) and (Mark) Skaife had the pace as well, and they were very unlucky with the way they were held up behind Jamie when his problem occurred. That made the rest of the afternoon very hard. So the one incident really hampered both our cars, and it meant it wasn’t out best day. SPEEDCAFE: Leading into each year’s Bathurst a lot of people say that ‘it’s just another race’, but surely it doesn’t really feel like that within the teams?

BURGESS: It’s certainly more than just another race to us. Although it is just another 300 points for the weekend, it is our grand final, so to speak, and if you don’t win the championship but you win Bathurst, it takes away some of the pain from not achieving the championship. It’s a very important weekend for the teams, for the sponsors, and for the fans, and for the drivers it’s the holy grail. In terms of how we prepare for it, it’s not much different. We always put our

maximum effort into preparing the cars and preparing ourselves for any situation that could crop up across a weekend. The differences at Bathurst are that you’ve got more pitstops and more people to take into account, and that you need to consider more eventualities because you’re racing for so much longer on the one day. That’s really where the only differences lie. Continued on page 8 >>

SPEEDCAFE: The rivalry between TeamVodafone and Ford Performance Racing has been building all year. It sets up a pretty good contest between the two teams at Bathurst, doesn’t it? BURGESS: It’s set up for a perfect weekend. There is a huge rivalry this year between us and FPR. In the past we haven’t necessarily had one single team that can bring a challenge to us day in, day out, but this year those guys are managing to do that. The rivalry is certainly building, and having two heavyweights going at it in the biggest race of the year is going to be great. It’ll be an epic day - a true 1000km sprint between four of the best driver combinations in four of the best cars. Having said that, you still can’t discount (Garth) Tander and (James) Courtney, and there are a few other guys on the verge that’ll want to be a part of the show too. So I think it’s going to be a huge day, especially when you throw in the 50th year celebrations as well. I think everyone is going to go home extremely exhausted, both mentally and physically drained. It’ll be a massive week. SPEEDCAFE: You certainly can’t count out the HRT, but when we’re talking about the four fancied cars, we’re talking about two pairs of two cars (from TeamVodafone and FPR). Last year, pit stacking played a major role throughout the day. Is there anything you can do differently this year to mitigate that? Or is it purely down to how the race flows with Safety Cars?

BURGESS: There’s not a lot you can do. Clearly, if you have a green flag race you wouldn’t have any queuing, and when the yellows fly is out of your control, so all you can do is have your protocols in place with regards to whether you do queue them or let one go past. All those things are discussed beforehand, but it’s very much a case of making the decisions when they need to be made in the race. We won’t look at it any differently then we have in previous years. The people sitting in the grandstands don’t have the information that we have and they might not understand all the decisions that we make, but we believe that we made all the right calls (last year) and I’m sure that, if we need to, we’ll make similar calls in the future. It’s hard to understand from the outside, but it’s not done on the flick of a coin, they’re numerically based decisions looking at what’s the best thing to do at any one moment. SPEEDCAFE: How important does that make the first stint of the race? Do you have to stop the guys from banging doors in the first stint while they fight for track position? BURGESS: There will always be a role in the race for the management of the engineers (on the two cars) to make sure that they’re not trading paint, but I don’t expect to be knocking the engineers heads together because they’re fighting over turf at the first stop. That’s not what I want to see, and our guys are old enough and wise enough not to be doing that.

The first few hours don’t matter too much to the end result as long as you’re in the ballpark come the middle of the race so that you’re set-up properly for the last stint. That’s when you need the right driver in the car and the right track position. As long as you don’t go a lap down, losing track position early in the piece is not the end of the world. SPEEDCAFE: We’ve seen a far few instances of co-drivers racing against primary drivers at Bathurst in recent years. Do you see your co-drivers as being two of the real strengths of your package? BURGESS: I do, yeah. I think we’ve got a better driver line-up than anyone else out there, which is why they’re driving for us. We’re not worried about our co-drivers, no matter who they’re up against in their stints. If they’re racing Shane (van Gisbergen), Garth (Tander), Frosty (Mark Winterbottom) or whoever, then our guys will do a good, solid job for us, and that’s all we ask them to do. SPEEDCAFE: Overall, you must be pleased with the situation you’re in heading to Bathurst considering that in late May, FPR had won seven races in a row, you were committed to debuting a Car of the Future in August, and there was a question mark over sponsorship for 2013. As a group, you’ve dealt with each of those challenges remarkably well. BURGESS: Definitely. The whole team, including the drivers, mechanics and engineers at the factory, have done an incredible job in the last few months getting us back on track and ironing out the issues that we had. We can’t lie about it, we weren’t doing a good enough job earlier in the year when FPR were winning. It wasn’t because

we didn’t have a quick enough car, it was because we were making mistakes. We’ve worked through that, and every single member of the team has come to the party and pulled together. Commercially there was a lot of things going on behind the scenes but now that it’s all out in the public domain it makes all our lives a bit easier. While we’re racing we can still push on with our plans for next year and we’re not having meetings behind closed doors. That’s taken a bit of the pressure off behind the scenes. The team has been doing a fantastic job, and is determined to carry it on and achieve what we set out to do at the start of the year. That includes winning this race at Bathurst.

Race 21 - Bathurst I Hot lap

Bathurst Hot Lap with Rick Kelly B

athurst is a unique track and one that all the drivers do a lot of homework on before they go there. It’s a special track and it doesn’t matter how much vision you watch or data you look at, your first laps of the first session are always quite nerve-racking. The car leaves the ground over the crests going up Mountain Straight and down Conrod Straight while going across the top can be quite uncomfortable. So, from a car point of view, the engineers focus on having a car that is comfortable to start with. If it’s a little oversteery at some of the scary places over the top a driver can lose his confidence very easily and it’s hard to get that back throughout the weekend. We always focus on a car that’s nice and predictable through the high-speed corners. Turn 1 (Hell Corner) is important because of the long run up Mount Straight. Its critical

to get your gear shifts right as well so that you don’t lose any time. Turn 2 (Griffins Bend) is quite a daunting little corner as you’re going pretty quickly and there is absolutely no run-off, but the turn also has quite a bit of banking so you want to try and carry as much speed as you can, because the climb to The Cutting is very, very steep and you want to carry as much momentum as you can. Braking into The Cutting is quite difficult due to the kink on the entry. The key is to carry as much pace as you can through and out of the corner without using all the exit space. Running out close to the exit wall makes it hard to get around the following right-hand kink. There’s actually a crest on that kink so you need to short-shift from second to third before you get there and then power up the hill towards the right-hander around

the tree. The next three corners are definitely the most daunting as they’re very fast and blind. You turn in hoping that there’s a clear track on the other side. Through this section you really want to get on the throttle nice and early and keep your corner speeds up. After you go under the tree, you hold it flat for a bit until you dip down to the section that’s called ‘the grate’. It’s also a bit of road that’s quite unnerving because you come down the hill still on the throttle and the car almost leaves the ground and wants to take itself wide towards the fence. You want to know how wide to position the car before it leaves the ground otherwise you’re in real trouble! From there we go through Reid and McPhillamy onto Skyline, which is one of the best parts of the track. You prepare yourself along that straight to come across Skyline and work your way towards The

15

Dipper, which is a tricky little section and one where you can lose a lot of time. I remember back in 2002 when I was driving the Holden Young Lions car and I compared my data with Skaifey (Holden Racing Team driver Mark Skaife). Early in the weekend I was losing six tenths of a second just in those corners alone. This section is all about braking and carrying the speed down through The Esses and getting your car positioned right through The Dipper so you can get on the throttle early and drive yourself through that little kink section down to Forest Elbow. Like Turn 1, Forest Elbow is all about exit speed, particularly in the race when you’re trying to pass people down Conrod. Forest Elbow is unique as it’s blind coming in and the apex wall juts out so you have to be careful not to clip it as it will fire you straight into the outside fence. Conrod is an area you can gather your thoughts a little bit and recover from the intensity of pushing the car across the top. The Chase is the fastest bit of track in Australia and you come through there at 300km/h on the limiter in sixth gear and

then try and stop the car for the lefthander. It’s a pretty tough one to stop and there are a few bumps going in so you really need to come through the chase with a lot of confidence to stop the car as best as you can and not go rushing the corner and end up on the grass on the other side. From there its about getting around the right hand kink leading up to the last

corner (Murray’s Corner). It’s easy to lose time here as you think you’re home, so even losing a tenth by braking early for this corner can cost you several grid spots in qualifying. If you get manage to get a good lap its very rewarding, but at the same time its one of the tracks you’re very nervous leading into qualifying as its so tough to do a clean, fast lap.

athurst is a special race because it’s just so hard to get right. It’s a race that rewards preparation, but often it comes down to a bit of luck on the day. People say you make your own luck, but Bathurst is a place where sometimes it just works for or against you. I’ve personally been on both sides of it over the years through my involvement firstly with the Tony Longhurst/Tomas Mezera Sierra in 1988, and later with the Stone Brothers (1998) and Triple Eight (2006-2008). The first win was a bit of a blur - there was lots of controversy going on in the background and it was hard work. But the one with Stones was just a really good day where our strategy worked perfectly. Strategy It’s obviously a very different race now then it was five years ago thanks to the E85 fuel. The range of the cars is 25 laps, give or take, which makes it a six and a half stint race with fairly big fuel windows. You can do all the saving in the world and it’ll only get you one lap further. Economy is still important though - it’s all about knowing how to drive fast and not use fuel. The last two years we’ve seen the cars really stretched on the last stint due to Safety Car timing. I believe that last year the main reason that Craig (Lowndes) couldn’t really chase Garth (Tander) in that final stint was fuel. If you look at Craig’s lap times he was doing 2:10s and I think they could go faster than that. The year before it was only that late Safety Car (for Will Davison’s crash) that saved about 10 people (including the TeamVodafone cars) from having to stop again. Having fuel-in-hand at the pitstops is very important at Bathurst,

but it’s a funny one because if you’ve got a competitive team-mate you need track position to make it work. We’ve even seen in the past that the second car has fuel-in-hand but has to sit and wait, which can effectively be a 15 second penalty. Stacking was obviously a major issue in 2011, and with the four favoured cars this year coming from just two teams, there’s a real possibility that it could decide the race. Last year it was the timing of the yellows that forced Triple Eight to keep stacking their cars, which obviously hurt Craig quite badly. If you’re pitting under green then clearly you’d service your cars a lap apart, but if the yellows fly in certain windows then you’re really stuck. Tyres Bathurst isn’t a place that’s hard on tyres, but you still have to make sure you manage them across the weekend. We only get eight new sets, and you need at least seven for the race, so you can’t afford to flat-spot a single one. The three sets of pre-marked tyres won’t get you through all of practice, so you can’t head into the race with a full complement of green tyres, but that’s not a big issue. You’ll get one good lap out of a green tyre, but the big issue, particularly at Bathurst, is a couple of key kerb strikes. That means you have to be quite careful to stay away from those kerbs on your out-lap while the

17

TECH PREVIEW with

CAMPBELL LITTLE

pressures come up, so trying to get the most out of the green tyre is counterproductive. Because it’s such a long way, you’ve really go to stay off the kerbs and take it easy. The only time you really get into trouble with tyres at Bathurst is if you push the envelope with cambers and pressures. That’s been going on for years, so it’s not anything that should be surprising anybody. Co-drivers The co-drivers are always an important part of the endurance races and since the rules came in splitting the primary drivers, we’ve seen a greater mix of primary and co-drivers on-track at the same time. That can put the pressure on the part-timers, so cool heads and experience can be at a premium. It’s interesting to see how some of the co-drivers perform differently at the two circuits as well. John McIntyre was one of the real standouts at Bathurst last year with Stone Brothers - he was faster than Van Giz (Shane van Gisbergen) for most of the day last year, but then at Sandown in our car he struggled a little bit. Braking confidence is just so big at Sandown, so on the other side of the coin you’ve got guys like Paul Dumbrell. He’s always very strong at Sandown, but then last year we went to Bathurst

and Dean Canto was faster than him in every stint. It’s swings and roundabouts when you go to different circuits. Brakes There are obviously a lot of other things to watch for throughout the race. Brakes are an interesting one, with teams varying between doing just one stop for pads to doing two pad stops and a rotor change like we did last year. That depends a lot on which of the pad options you take, so it varies between teams. Brake cooling is also an interesting one as you have to balance your desire to run blanking for aero against the basic need to lower the temperatures. You get a big brake temp variation at Bathurst because of the lengths of the straights. Overall I think it’s going to be a really good race and not just between FPR and Triple Eight. HRT always step up at Bathurst. Garth in particular is always very good here, and Russell (Ingall) can’t be discounted either. The fuel-in-hand factor means that anyone can pit under every Safety Car to take a drink of fuel and, if the Safety Cars fall right, jump right to the front, which is something we saw BJR do that quite well last year. Obviously you need to have the pace to maintain a high position, but it can really make the race interesting in the closing stages.

eat TeamVodafone and the Holden Racing Team and chances are you will win this year’s Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000. The two Holden squads have dominated the Bathurst race since 2001, claiming nine of the last 11 wins in the October classic. In that time the Holden Racing Team has claimed five wins, Triple Eight have claimed four and Kmart Racing (part of the HRT/HMS family in the mid 2000s) won twice. Not counting the Kmart team (which was related to HRT at the time of its wins by sharing a common equipment supplier in Holden Motor Sport), the last Bathurst win to be claimed outside of Triple Eight and Walkinshaw Racing/HRT/HMS was in 2000 when Garry Rogers Motorsport duo Garth Tander and Jason Bargwanna triumphed behind the wheel of the #34 Valvoline Commodore. Since 2005, HRT and Triple Eight have claimed more than 50 percent of the podium finishing positions at Bathurst (11 of 21) and between them they have led 43 percent of laps (762 of the 1771 laps competed). Reigning Peter Brock Trophy winners Garth Tander and Nick Percat are the only combination in this year’s race featuring a pair of Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000 winners.

T

here are a range of special elements of Bathurst history being celebrated at the 2012 race. Various V8 Supercar teams will modify their existing liveries to pay homeage to some of the iconic drivers, teams and cars that have made up the race’s history. While the 50th year of the race is being celebrated, there are a range of other milestones to highlight. - This year is the 35th anniversary of the famous Ford 1-2 form finish by Allan Moffat and Colin Bond in the 1977 race. - This year is also the 45th anniversary of the first V8-powered car winning the Bathurst endurance race - and also of the first Falcon win - given it was in 1967 that Harry Firth and Fred Gibson won the-then 500-mile race in an XR GT Falcon V8.

T

his year’s Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000 is the end of an era with the current five-litre V8 Supercar regulations. With new ‘Car of the Future’ specification machinery to debut next season, 2012 is the 21st and final year of the current rulebook of winged, pushrod five-litre V8 Falcons and Commodores racing at Bathurst. They have been competing in the Mountain classic each year since four 1993-spec cars appeared in their own class in the 1992 race. The five-litre ‘V8 Supercar’ rule book remains the longest-serving technical regulations in Bathurst history, even outlasting the popular Group C of the 1970s/1980s and international Group A of the 1980s/1990s. This year is the last (for the foreseeable future anyway) in a streak of 18 years that the annual Bathurst V8 Supercar classic has been the exclusive domain of Holden and Ford V8-powered cars. Next year, both Nissan and Mercedes AMGs will be on the grid to compete against them.

- This year is the 25th anniversary of Peter Brock’s ninth and final win in the race in 1987 as well as the introduction of the Chase to the circuit, which extended the lap length and reduced the race distance from 163 to 161 laps.

here are five drivers in this year’s field making their Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000 debut: Scott McLaughlin (#19 Tekno Autosports), Christian Klien (#66 Supercheap Auto Racing), Alexandre Premat (#33 Fujitsu Racing/GRM), Scott Pye (#30 Team iSelect) and Jesse Dixon (#23 Shannons carsales.com.au Racing). Klien is the first Austrian driver to compete in the race since the late Roland Ratzenberger and Mercedes Stermitz drove factory BMWs in 1987, while Premat is the first French driver since Yvan Muller co-drove with Craig Lowndes in 2005. On the flip side, there are a range of drivers missing from the grid for the first time in many years. Eighteen-year-old Waters, 20-year-old Dixon (right) and their combined age of 38 will undercut the previous record of 39 held by Jack Perkins and Shane Price from 2006. Daniel’s Racing in the main race), won the round in 2010 and finished second last year to Andrew Thompson - though will not compete at the Mountain after his team withdrew from the round last week. The five different drivers that have won the previous seven DVS rounds at Bathurst - Andrew Thompson David Russell, Jonathon Webb, Dean Canto and Luke Youlden - will all be on the grid for the main race.

Nine straight race wins heading into Bathurst and a record of four wins in the last six Bathurst 1000s sees this team again head to the Mountain as hot favourites this year. Both cars are well capable of winning, with the ‘Craig Lowndes factor’ has #888 marginally ahead on paper. A onetwo is more than possible if the critical stops can be done under green, although last year proved that nothing should be taken for granted. Co-drivers are among the best out there, despite Dumbrell traditionally running better at Sandown than Bathurst.

All three Walkinshaw Holdens should be fighting over top 10 spots on Sunday afternoon, with the two red cars genuine chances to give the TeamVodafone/FPR juggernaut a major scare. Primary drivers Garth Tander and James Courtney both have very strong recent Bathurst records, with the latter enjoying arguably his most competitive dry showing of 2011 at Mount Panorama. Question marks over Nick Percat’s ability to remain error-free (he went off the road twice at Sandown) and the ultimate speed of the chassis ensure that a HRT win would still be somewhat of an upset.

SBR heads to Bathurst with a solid line-up of driver pairings that all made it home inside the top 10 at Sandown. The team has, however, scored just one top 10 finish at Bathurst in the last three years, struggling for both one-lap speed and consistent race pace at the venue since the FG model Falcons were introduced in 2009. On that basis, seeing the top five will be a great result. Recent form indicates that the Van Gisbergen/Youlden entry remains this team’s best shot, despite the Kiwi being outshone by then co-driver John McIntyre last year.

While TeamVodafone deserves to hold the mantle of favourites, FPR is a big chance to finally put a Bathurst win on the board this year. Mark Winterbottom has finished outside the top six only twice so far this year, taking 13 podiums from his last 15 starts, including last time at Sandown. Will Davison’s 2012 statistics aren’t quite as impressive, although his pace at Bathurst last year perhaps gives the 2009 race winner even more reason to be optimistic. The third entry is also a podium contender, with Dean Canto again proving himself as one of the finest co-drivers at Sandown.

Sadly for Kelly Racing fans, a top 10 finish is about all that can be hoped for from this four-car squad in its last Bathurst running Holdens. The team has a combined nine top 10s from 80 starts so far this year, with the squad often trying to make up for a lack of outright speed with aggressive pit strategies. Save for the qualifying efforts of Murphy and Reynolds last year, Bathurst has also proven one of the team’s worst tracks in the last two years. It’ll take similarly inspired performances to see a KR Commodore in the Top 10 Shootout.

It was a rough Sandown for BJR, which began with its defacto lead car being heavily crashed by co-driver David Besnard during Friday practice. Unfortunately, the Queenslander’s accident prone reputation hangs over the #14 entry heading into Bathurst - a place where Fabian Coulthard has failed to progress past the first stint without major drama in each of the last two years. The Bright/Jones 2011 Bathurst campaign shows why a top five finish should never be completely discounted for this team however, with a mix of strategy and outright good fortunate propelling the duo into the top placings in the closing stages.

Like Kelly Racing, a single top 10 finish for this four car squad would be a strong result, considering their seven in 80 top 10 record from the season so far. The least fancied Fiore/Halliday Falcon was the only DJR entry to finish on the lead lap at Sandown, albeit down in 16th place. Moffat and Davison are on paper the pick of this bunch and will garner extra attention running an adaptations of Dick Johnson’s famous ‘Tru-Blu’ colourscheme. Expect all four cars to qualify down the field, with the #12, #17 and #18 cars quietly moving up the order throughout the day. Paul Morris’ performance meanwhile is anyone’s guess.

Jonathon Webb and Scott McLaughlin scored a highly impressive top 10 finish on the latter’s championship debut at Sandown, and clearly have the equipment to repeat that performance at Bathurst. The mountain is a much bigger challenge for a driver of McLaughlin’s age, however, as proven by the youngster’s middling form at the venue in last year’s Development Series round. The second entry, meanwhile, was well off the pace of the lead car at Sandown, and is currently sponsor-less for the big race. Patrizi at least has good Bathurst form, winning the Carrera Cup round here in 2011.

Although this squad won’t have the outright speed to fight for the major placings, a top 10 appears well within reach for the Caruso/Ritter combination, provided that the latter can avoid the kind of concentration lapses that cost him so dearly at Bathurst last year and at Sandown last month. The #33 car is perhaps the only one in the field where the codriver can be expected to out-perform the primary driver as Alex Premat learns the circuit in these highly specialised cars. Perkins did a typically strong job at Sandown and will give the Frenchman every chance of bringing home a respectable finish.

Race 21 - Bathurst I Driver Profiles

The Bagman’s Say

Tony D’Alberto Racing Base: Knoxfield, Victoria Car: Ford Falcon FG Chassis: Ford Performance Racing Engines: Ford Performance Racing Team principal: Al D’Alberto

This entry is one of many that will most likely qualify in the back half of the field before moving forward in the race. Its final finishing position is therefore particularly hard to predict as it will be largely determined by the fortunes of others. A top 10 finisher last year, the D’Alberto/Wood combination is one of just six to remain together from the 2011 event.

#3 Hiflex Racing - Tony D’Alberto/Dale Wood Born: 9 December 1985 V8SC debut: 2005 Race wins: 0 Career Highlights: 1st 2007 V8 Supercars Development Series, 6th 2007 Bathurst 1000, 5th 2005 V8 Supercars Development Series, 9th 2011 Bathurst 1000

Born: 9 June 1983 V8SC debut: 2008 Race wins: 0 Career Highlights: 6th 2008 V8 Supercars Development Series, 6th 2006 Australian Formula Ford Championship

The Bagman’s Say Lucas Dumbrell Motorsport Base: Nunawading, Victoria Car: Holden Commodore VEII Chassis: Triple Eight Race Engineering Engines: KRE Team principal: Lucas Dumbrell

The Lucas Dumbrell Motorsport entry provides Roland Dane protégé Scott Pye with the ideal low-expectation Bathurst debut. The former British Formula Ford Champion will benefit from competing in a near identical spec car in the Development Series this weekend alongside his main duties, while an outing in February’s Bathurst 12 Hour at least provided some experience of the circuit. A consistent and mistake-free day from both Taz Douglas and Pye will likely see this car finish somewhere in the top 20.

#30 iSelect Racing - Taz Douglas/Scott Pye Born: 11 February 1985 V8SC debut: 2009 Race wins: 0 Career Highlights: 1st 2010 V8 Supercars Development Series Sandown Race 2, 8th 2007 Australian Formula Ford Championship, 9th 2009 V8 Supercars Development Series

Born: 8 January 1990 V8SC debut: 2012 Race wins: 0 Career Highlights: 2010 British Formula Ford Champion, 3rd 2009 Australian Formula Ford Championship, 3rd 2008/09 Toyota Racing Series

Race 21 - Bathurst I Driver Profiles

The Bagman’s Say

Shannons Racing Base: Cranbourne, Victoria Car: Holden Commodore VEII Chassis: Walkinshaw Racing Engines: Walkinshaw Racing Team principal: Bruin Beasley

The youngest combination ever to start the Bathurst 1000, the goal for this duo will be simply to finish. While competition winner Jesse Dixon has relatively little racing experience and none at this level, Cameron Waters has at least been progressing well in the Development Series over recent events, and was a logical choice to replace the injured Grant Denyer. Waters’ experience on debut here last year, where he crashed early in the opening stint, proves how difficult this place is. Practice laps will be at a premium for both drivers.

#23 Shannons Racing - Cameron Waters/Jesse Dixon Born: 3 August 1994 V8SC debut: 2011 Race wins: 0 Career Highlights: 2011 Australian Formula Ford Champion, 2011 Shannons Supercar Showdown reality television show winner

Born: 20 June 1992 V8SC debut: 2012 Race wins: Career Highlights: 2010 Formula BMW Pacific junior scholarship winner, 22nd 2009 Australian Formula Ford Championship

Race 21 - Bathurst I Review

As good as it gets Last year’s Bathurst 1000 saw the HRT defeat TeamVodafone in a dramatic finish

G

arth Tander used all the grit and determination for which he is known to hold off a gallant charge from Craig Lowndes in the dying stages of the 2011 Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000. Just 0.29s separated the two Holdens at the flag, with the closest competitive finish in the history of the race netting Tander his third Bathurst victory, and ensuring co-driver Nick Percat would be the first rookie winner in almost 35 years. Tander and Percat had fought with the Jamie Whincup/Andrew Thompson TeamVodafone pairing for much of the day before the race was turned on its head as the final pitstops unfolded. Race-long electrical problems in the #88 Commodore finally came to a head as Whincup chased race leader Tander - the

TeamVodafone entry cutting in and out as it passed the pitlane on Lap 138 before momentarily stopping on the way up the hill. With Safety Car boards and flags flying, several cars - including that of Craig Lowndes - lost time behind the stricken Whincup car at the top of the Mountain, ensuring Lowndes would line up for the final restart in just seventh place. Picking his way through to second by Lap 148, the fivetime Bathurst winner set about cutting a 5.6s gap to Tander. A minor off from the HRT car at the Chase in the closing stages ensured the two cars would start the final lap nose-to-tail, but strong corner exits from the HRT entry ensured the lead would not change hands. Car #2 had made significant side-on contact with the outside wall at Griffins Bend

during Percat’s second stint - a moment that Tander would later insist caused no mechanical damage. “The car was very good for the majority of the day except in that last stint,” said Tander. “I had to make sure we were fast in the key areas of the track to make sure they (Lowndes) couldn’t have a go at us. He had a sneaky look up at the tree (Reid Park) – I thought it was going to be fun if he tried to come through there…” The Greg Murphy/Allan Simonsen Holden was a further 11.5s back in third, having led the opening six laps from a surprise pole position earned in a rain-affected Top 10 Shootout on Saturday afternoon. The Pepsi Max Crew Commodore lacked the outright speed required to win the race however, and lost considerable track position with pitstop

issues during the day. Murphy’s time at the front of the field in the opening stint ended thanks to the pace of fellow front-row starter Will Davison. The Trading Post FPR Falcon would sadly soon be rendered an also-ran however thanks to an early crash at Murray’s Corner from co-driver Luke Youlden. The Whincup/Thompson Holden led every lap between Laps 29 and 114, with the soonto-be Development Series winner driving flawlessly in his second and third stints – most of which were spent holding Percat at bay. Thompson’s move on Skaife in the very first stint of the race had set up a difficult day for the #888 car as it continually lost time in the pitstops queuing behind its sister entry. The team attempted to put its second car-sequence prior to the start

47

of Skaife’s second run, but further Safety Car interventions saw the strategies reset with little change to the overall situation. Mark Winterbottom and Steven Richards lacked the speed of their key rivals all day on the way to a fourth place result. Jason Bright and Andrew Jones finished far higher than their outright pace indicated in fifth having vaulted up the order when Whincup’s issue combined beautifully with the Brad Jones Racing Holden’s fuel strategy. Shane van Gisbergen dragged the Ford he shared with John McIntyre to sixth despite the car suffering two offs throughout the day, while the James

Courtney/Cameron McConville Holden survived overheating troubles to finish seventh. Russell Ingall/Jack Perkins, Tony D’Alberto/Dale Wood and Michael Caruso/Marcus Marshall rounded out the top 10, while the unlucky Whincup battled home one lap down in 21st. The race’s biggest casualty was the Steven Johnson/ David Besnard Ford, which dramatically burst into flames after being crashed by its co-driver at Griffins Bend, triggering one of the day’s eight Safety Car periods. For a race utterly dominated by three cars, it had been a highly entertaining affair.
