Tough calls

SALES/MARKETING:

Operating a Formula 1 team is not an easy business, and the extent of the juggling act involved becomes more evident at some times than others.

Ending the season with seven fly-away races in just two months is clearly a punishing schedule for those involved at crew-level, but clearly travel is not a new phenomenon for the paddock. The biggest headache right now is back at the factories, where team chiefs must divvy up resources between their 2012, 2013 and 2014 contenders. As explored further by Lotus F1 Team technical director James Allison later in this Race Guide, the three-way pull on resources is somewhat unprecedented thanks to the wholesale changes in engine and aerodynamic specification already confirmed for 2014. The Brawn GP-dominated 2009 season proved just how rewarding getting it right can be when wholesale rule changes are made, and although 2014 currently seems like a long way off, no outfit can afford to underestimate the work involved. While decisions to divert resources away from the current cars are not likely to be made among the top championship contenders, it may well have an effect on sorting the positions further down the order, where the monetary prize differences between slots is arguably of the most importance. Even for those where prize money is less of an issue, the likes of Mercedes will be highly embarrassed if it is steam-rolled by Sauber for fifth in the final four events. Telling new signing Lewis Hamilton that he’ll be lining up in car number #12 for the 2013 season is undoubtedly a task best avoided...

Round 17 - India I Cover Story

Anything is possible

Kimi Raikkonen not giving up on 2012 title

K

imi Raikkonen may be a hefty 48 points adrift of new World Championship leader Sebastian Vettel heading into this weekend’s Indian Grand Prix, but past experience has taught the canny Finn that anything is still possible. Returning from a two-year layoff from Grand Prix racing in which he spent time in the World Rally Championship, as well as making selected appearances on the NASCAR scene in the United States, Raikkonen has been one of the standouts of the 2012 season. He may yet to have taken his Lotus E20 to a single race win or pole-position, but the 33-year-old’s consistency has seen him sit third in the World Drivers’ Championship with just four events remaining.

Twelve top-six finishes from 16 starts, including nine consecutive heading into the weekend, have been the backbone of Raikkonen’s campaign. Only once has he finished outside the points, and that was in a unpredictable Malaysian Grand Prix where the #9 Lotus fell from second to 14th as its tyres faded in the waning laps. But while third in the standings would be a highly commendable result, Raikkonen says that his 2007 championship success with Ferrari, where he overhauled a 17 point margin (when just 10 were awarded for a victory) to then leader Lewis Hamilton in the final two races to claim the title, is a remainder to never give up on the top spot. “We have to keep working hard and keep a high level of motivation,” he says of the final four races. “Personally I feel my own

motivation is very high – like it has always been. I’m keen to get the best results I can. Of course, in 2007 the championship wasn’t decided until the last race so anything is possible. Let’s see what happens.” He adds: “There’s no point setting targets; we just need to keep working as hard as we can to score strong points and see what happens from there. In terms of the championship, the gap to Sebastian (Vettel) is quite big now so it will be very difficult to catch him, but we’ll keep pushing all the way.” Like the previous event in Korea, the Indian Grand Prix will be a new experience for Raikkonen, who has yet to visit the country, let alone race on the Buddh International Circuit. It’s a fact that doesn’t fluster the typically cool Finn, who refuses to use the

simulators typically employed by teams to help drivers in his situation. “I’m not like other drivers, so I haven’t driven the simulator to learn it, but all in all it’s not that much of a tricky situation,” he says of learning the circuit. “I like to go to different places and the challenge of driving a new circuit is always interesting. So far I’ve learnt tracks after a few laps in FP1 on Fridays. I didn’t have any problems learning the Yeongam circuit that way, and I don’t expect to have any issues here either. “We know this circuit is likely to be very dusty at the start of the weekend so that will make things interesting for the first practice sessions. We’ll have some new things on Continued on page 10 >>

the car and it will be our second time with the new exhaust system so hopefully we can make more gains with our pace. India should also be pretty hot which should suit us. I’m looking forward to it.” The new ‘Coanda’ exhaust seen on the E30s in Korea is essentially a copy of the system pioneered this season by McLaren and subsequently adopted by fellow heavyweights Ferrari, Red Bull and Mercedes, in a bid to claw back downforce lost in the pre-season ban on blown diffusers. Introducing such an intricate system so late in the year is a commendable effort from Lotus at a time when resources need to be applied to both the 2013 and 2014 cars. The team’s technical director James Allison says that deciding when to ‘turn off the development tap’ on the current car is never an easy decision. “It’s a question comes up a lot at the tail end of the season,” he says of halting development. “In a normal year, the answer would be that the focus has pretty much shifted to next year’s car already. This is not a normal year though. Every team on the grid is facing the unprecedented challenge of working simultaneously on three cars.

“There are two principal reasons for this: Firstly, the rules for 2013 are relatively unchanged which – combined with the quite tight grid – means that there is still merit in developing the 2012 car even this late in the season. Secondly, the looming shadow of the 2014 regulations demands our attention. Anyone who followed the sport in 2009 will know that a large shake up in the regulations presents both opportunity and hazard which can significantly re-jig the traditional pecking order of the teams. >> Continued on page 13

Round 17 - India I Cover Story

“The regulatory revolution for 2014 makes the 2009 changes look trivial by comparison. Choices have to be made with three babies competing for development food; do you put resources into the E20 and get as much out of it as possible or is it more prudent to make the most of what will be ‘the last hurrah’ for this generation of rules in 2013? Alternatively, is it right to focus more on the longer term future with the 2014 rules that will form the basis of the next generation of F1 cars? It’s a very finely balanced judgement and one that is a fascinating challenge. By the end of the 2014 season we should know if we made the correct decisions.” Pushing ahead with the current car may give a glimmer of hope to Raikkonen’s slim chances in the Drivers’ title, but it also could have a significant effect on the Constructors’ Championship. Lotus currently sits 29 points shy of third-placed McLaren in the Constructors’ race, and isn’t giving up on the position. “There’s no denying it will be difficult,” says Lotus team principal Eric Boullier of knocking off the Woking heavyweights. “Having said that there are still four races left and four good opportunities to score points. The key will be to make sure we have good reliability from the E20 and our drivers, with both cars finishing solidly in the points every weekend.”

Round 17 - India I Track Details

Buddh International Circuit Technical preview with Lotus F1’s trackside operations director Alan Permane

THE CAR Rear wing Simulations show that the Buddh International Circuit is comparable to a Suzuka or Barcelona level of downforce; similar to that used in Korea which is a couple of steps away from maximum load. Brakes There are significant braking demands at turns one, four and five but overall it isn’t a hard circuit for brakes. There is a long straight for the brakes to cool before turn 4 and they will also not be unduly stressed heading into Turn 1. Suspension There are no significant bumps or kerbs that require special attention here. Good change of direction in the medium speed corners is essential so suspension would tend to be at the stiffer end of the range. Tyres Pirelli will again bring their hard and soft compound tyres to this race. This will give us the challenge of making the hard tyres work well enough in the early laps while also managing the higher wear levels expected on the soft tyres.

Front wing Front wing downforce needs to be sufficient to eradicate understeer, particularly for the turn 10-11 high speed corners where it could cost a lot of lap time. Engine The first part of the circuit requires good top speed and power since 75% of this sector consists of straights. The second part of the track is twistier and requires a more driveable and responsive engine. The resultant engine requirements will be similar to Korea in this respect. Dust and grit from the surface can also be ingested into the airbox so filters will be regularly inspected to avoid blockages.

THE Circuit Pitlane The pit lane is one of the longest in Formula 1 at over 600 metres with a notable influence on pit stop strategy as a result. Turns 4 approach With speeds of around 320kph attained, the longest straight on the track leads into Turn 4; a corner which is quite wide to assist with overtaking. It’s also the heaviest braking point on the circuit – with cars going from 320-90kph in 140 metres – creating aspect which should assist passing.

Turns 8 - 9 A fast right to left chicane, turns 8-9 require a quick change of direction from the car. Turn 7 - 13 Turns 7-13 are quite long, sweeping corners, relying on good downforce and balance from the car. Turn 8 is the fastest point – taken at almost 300kph – before heading to the slower turns 9 and 10. Overall quite a satisfying section of race track for the drivers. Turns 10 - 11 The never-ending turn 10-11 combo is similar to Turkey’s Turn 8; long and fast, with energy building and compounding in the tyres. Turn 10 is uphill and heads straight into Turn 11, which combined to form one of the most exciting parts of the circuit. This section is overlooked by a grandstand with a capacity of 13,000. Through this long corner, understeer is the enemy and car setup is focused on countering that. Turn 13 - 14 Turns 13-14 form another section requiring good change of direction. Here the car needs to be stiff to ensure receptive response. Turn 16 Turn 16 is another wider section of track which promotes overtaking opportunities.

THE BAGMAN’s SAY... Red Bull Racing is once again the team to beat in Grand Prix racing. Sebastian Vettel has won the past three races, taking the championship lead from Fernando Alonso last time out in Korea. Adding to his claim to be favourite for this weekend’s race, Vettel was in dominant form when the Formula 1 World Championship made its debut at the Buddh International Circuit last year, taking an easy victory. Mark Webber scored pole and the fastest lap in Korea but was left to rue a tardy start that let his team-mate by. He’ll be on the pace again here but stopping Vettel appears tough.

THE BAGMAN’s SAY... Far from challenging Red Bull and Ferrari for the Constructors’ title, McLaren finds itself heading into the final four races under pressure from Lotus for third in points. Korea was undoubtedly a disaster for McLaren, with Jenson Button exiting qualifying in Q2 and the race on Lap 1. Lewis Hamilton meanwhile was in all sorts of bother with high tyre wear, necessitating an extra pitstop compared to his rivals. The McLaren is still fundamentally a good package, but has clearly fallen behind the Red Bull on outright pace. Returning to the top step will be difficult but not impossible.

THE BAGMAN’s SAY... Despite immediate appearances, Ferrari had a relatively successful weekend in Korea. Both Fernando Alonso and Felipe Massa started in the top six and finished in the top four, with a third place equalling the Spaniard’s best result in the last six events. The Korean race proved just how costly Alonso’s Suzuka DNF had been however, as mere podiums are no longer enough for the Ferrari pilot to score a third title. The team will naturally continue its development push until the end of the season, and says it has made significant headway into the wind tunnel calibration issues that have hampered recent updates. Another podium may be on the cards, but a win looks a tough ask.

THE BAGMAN’s SAY... Like McLaren, Mercedes is another needing to watch its back in the final races of the season as minnows Sauber sit just 20 points adrift of the Anglo-German giant. Mercedes has not scored points in either of the last two races and faces a tough task to regain competitiveness before the season is out. While team principal Ross Brawn admitted that the rear-wing updates brought to Korea were focussed on developments for the 2013 car, the team has denied that all development work of the current car has ceased. Either way, anything more than a handful of points will be a miracle here.

THE BAGMAN’s SAY... Lotus continues to push hard with the development on its E20 in order to keep its hopes of stealing third in the Constructors’ Championship, and even a highly unlikely win for Kimi Raikkonen in the Drivers’ Championship, alive. The team has been close to victories all season but appears unable to make the final step required to take a big trophy. Raikkonen is the biggest case in point, scoring nine consecutive top six finishes heading into the weekend without a victory. Romain Grosjean’s ability to stay out of trouble and join his team-mate in the top six will be vital to their Constructors’ chances.

THE BAGMAN’s SAY... Despite its British base and German-Scottish driver line-up, Force India will always grab plenty of attention during the Indian Grand Prix weekend. Much of it this year, however, will likely be unwanted attention as team owner Vijay Mallya grapples with the grounding of his Kingfisher Airlines due to debt issues. An arrest warrant for Mallya has been issued and subsequently rescinded since the Korean Grand Prix - an issue that is likely to be high on the agenda for local press. Almost in the background, the topic of Nico Hulkenberg’s impending move to Sauber for 2013 is also potentially destabilising. Any points will be good points for this squad at the Buddh circuit amid the turmoil.

THE BAGMAN’s SAY... Consistency continues to be a bugbear of this outfit, particularly in qualifying. The team’s failure to put either of its cars in Q3 in Singapore and Korea sandwich a Japanese Grand Prix effort that saw both qualify among the top six. Sauber’s race results are therefore rather hard to predict, with anything from a podium run to a pointless performance possible. Off-track, it will be a big home Grand Prix weekend for the team’s recently appointed team principal, Monisha Kaltenborn, who is likely to be the darling of the local media in light of Vijay Mallya’s recent troubles.

THE BAGMAN’s SAY... Toro Rosso pair Daniel Ricciardo and Jean-Eric Vergne have emerged as surprisingly consistent points contenders in recent races, with circumstances perhaps more than outright pace conspiring to give the youngsters a combined six top 10 finishes from the last five races. Ricciardo in particular has scored points in each of the last three Grands Prix, despite failing to qualify better than 15th on each occasion. The Australian has at least continued to have the measure of the Frenchman on Saturdays, with the battle to qualifying ahead standings at 13:3 over the season. Neither can be discounted from sneaking into the top 10 once again at the end of Sunday’s race.

THE BAGMAN’s SAY... Williams may struggle to see any points this weekend as it continues to slide from the outright pace as the season works to a close. Pastor Maldonado and Bruno Senna managed to qualify just 15th and 18th respectively last time out in Korea, marking the Venezuelan’s worst Saturday performance in nine races. Points subsequently proved too much of an ask for both driver’s in the race. The team at least is comfortable in its Constructors’ Championship position, with its 58 point haul from the opening 16 races seeing it eighth in the standings, a full 37 points clear of ninth-placed Toro Rosso.

THE BAGMAN’s SAY... Caterham is running out of race in which is snatch back 10th spot in the Constructors’ Championship from Marussia, which benefited from attrition in Singapore to score a surprise 12th place with Timo Glock. Matching that mark will be a tough ask in India, with only the first corner of the race providing a possibility of multicar carnage. Previous form suggests that the team will at least be able to out-pace its Marussia rivals, however.

HEIKKI KOVALAINEN Nationality: Finnish Date of Birth: 19/10/1981 Debut: Albert Park, 2007 World Championships: 0 Wins: 1 Poles: 1 Fastest Laps: 2 Career Highlights: 1st 2008 Hungarian Grand Prix, 2nd 2005 GP2 Series, 1st 2004 World Series by Nissan

THE BAGMAN’s SAY... Narain Karthikeyan will have his annual moment in the sun this weekend as he lines up for his home Grand Prix for a second time. Out-qualified by team-mate Pedro de la Rosa on 14 of the 16 occasions so far this year, not even the most optimistic of Indian fans and media will be expecting anything from their journeyman driver.

THE BAGMAN’s SAY... Marussia pair Timo Glock and Charles Pic proved relatively competitive against the Caterhams last time out in Korea, but again found their cars’ lack of KERS to be a limiting factor in combat. Beating either Caterham appears unlikely provided that the green cars remain reliable and steer clear of any accidents.
