As big a mistake as Romain Grosjean made at Spa last weekend, banning him from competing in the Italian Grand Prix was a confounding response from the FIA. Grosjean clearly deserved to be penalised in some fashion for his misjudgement, but to receive the first driving infringement-induced ban in almost 20 years of Grand Prix racing smacks of over-reaction. The Frenchman’s previous record of first-lap incidents this year undoubtedly played a role in the stewards’ decision. The argument that the GP2 graduate should have tempered his aggression following previous misdemeanours is a logical one, but it could also be said that the drivers deserve to have each case judged on its own merits. Prejudicing decisions based on past cases for which punishments have already been served rarely brings justice. If the FIA were truly acting under such a cascading system, then surely the 11 driving infringement penalties handed to Pastor Maldonado over the first 12 weekends of the season would surely have him in line for a small holiday too? Perhaps the most worrying aspect of the FIA’s decision was the line in its judgement that read: “It (the incident) eliminated leading championship contenders from the race.” This comment has left many wondering why a different standard of conduct is expected around drivers whom the FIA consider as “leading championship contenders”. The situation is especially galling when one considers that, with eight races still to go, even Narain Karthikeyan is technically still a championship contender. The crux of the matter is that the Lotus team principals would have been as furious as anyone in the paddock over the Spa incident. Young drivers like Grosjean who continually make mistakes are either retained such that they can improve with experience, or they are dropped and replaced at the team’s discretion. It’s natural selection process that is not unique to motor racing, and only comes unstuck in situations where pay-drivers are involved. This is clearly not one of those cases. Sitting on the couch watching is highly unlikely to improve Grosjean’s ability to make snap risk assessments in the opening lap of a race, while creating a situation where a reserve driver who has done minimal laps all year gets thrown into the middle of the F1 pack is hardly an outcome that screams ‘safety initiative’. A disappointing decision all round, then. Green means go!

aving watched patiently from the sidelines during the opening 11 races of the season, Lotus F1 test and reserve driver Jerome d’Ambrosio will step into the driver’s seat this weekend. The 26-year-old Belgian replaces Romain Grosjean, whose fast but erratic season lurched to a new low at Spa Francorchamps last weekend as the Frenchman caused a multi-car first corner collision that saw the FIA hand out a one-race ban. The penalty is the first ban to be served for a driving infringement since the 1994 season in which separate incidents saw Eddie Irvine, Michael Schumacher and Mikka Hakkinen all feel the wrath of the stewards. Grosjean’s pain, of course, is D’Ambrosio’s gain. Having been pushed out of the revolving door attached to the second Marussia F1 Team drive at the end of his rookie season last year, D’Ambrosio is understandably keen to impress in the Lotus at Monza. “For me it’s a great opportunity and great challenge,” he says of replacing Grosjean. “I will do everything I can to do the best possible job. I’ve worked hard outside the car this year and tried to prepare as best I can just in case something like this happened. I want to make the most of this weekend. “It’s a massive challenge, especially because I’ve not driven much this year and Monza is a unique low downforce track,” he adds. “But I don’t want to focus on what will be hard or difficult. I just want to focus on what I can achieve. It will be challenging but I am already part of the team, I know everyone and I will have great support from them to do the best I can. I will be focussed 100 percent to make full use of free practice because that could be the key for me this weekend.”

The uncompetitive nature of the Marussia package made D’Ambrosio’s true ability difficult to judge last year, with a 14th place finish in Australia’s season opener unable to be bettered over the remaining 18 races. His junior career is best described as solid rather than stellar, with three middling seasons in GP2 between 2008 and 2010 yielding just one race win and a best overall result of ninth in the 2009 standings. D’Ambrosio’s GP2 tenure has at least provided him with racing experience at Monza ahead of this weekend. Last year’s Italian Grand Prix saw the second Marussia fail to take the start after a mechanical failure on the warm-up lap... Although the team’s decision to utilise D’Amborisio in Monza was not officially confirmed by Lotus until midweek, the Belgian’s preparation began immediately following the FIA’s announcement of Grosjean’s penalty. “As soon as I got the call on Sunday night I drove back to Spa to speak with Ayao Komatsu who will be my race engineer,” says D’Ambrosio. “We checked my seat and talked through everything I need to know. I will be spending time in the simulator, fine tuning myself with all the procedures. And I’ll be speaking a lot with the engineers so I’m as prepared as I can be heading into first practice on Friday.” While D’Ambrosio is listed as the team’s test driver, the strict testing regulations and the team’s decision not to run him in Free Practice sessions on Grand Prix weekends so far this season means that his mileage in the E20 has been minimal. With this in mind, team principal Eric Boullier says he’ll have plenty of advice for his young driver once the team arrives in Monza. “I’ll tell him to take things one step at a time over the race weekend,” says Boullier of his instructions. “The worst thing to do would be to try and match (teammate) Kimi (Raikkonen)’s pace straight from FP1. Jérôme will do his homework from Friday to Saturday, with the engineers he knows, according to a tailor-made

programme. I’m not worried. He knows our processes, our set-up philosophy, and he also knows Monza like the back of his hand. It won’t be an easy weekend for us, but I’m not too worried.” No matter D’Ambrosio’s efforts, it will undoubtedly be the other side of the garage that commands most of the team’s focus. A sixth podium of the season last weekend for Raikkonen has the Finn just one point shy of third place in the championship standings. While the team remains winless so far this season, Boullier believes his team remains well in title contention. “We know that we don’t have the quickest car, but probably the most consistent one,” he says. “We’ve clinched nine podiums already. Kimi is 33 points away from the current leader and we know that the season is still wide open. With eight races to go, we’ll keep pushing as long as we have a chance. Kimi has been under that kind of situation before and we all know he can do the job if we give him the right car. The pressure is on us, then.”

THE CAR Rear wing With the long straights forming a significant aspect of the Monza circuit layout - speeds of around 330km/h being attained during the course of a lap - minimising drag is an important consideration. For this reason, a Monzaonly low drag and low downforce rear wing is produced. As the rear wing creates less drag that normal, the difference between DRS on and DRS off is less than at other circuits. Brakes After Montreal, this is one of the heaviest circuits of the year for braking demands, with braking from the fastest part of the track (c 340km/h) to the slowest (c 75km/h) taking place for the Turn 1-2 chicane. Recent brake material developments mean that temperatures and wear have become less of a consideration than previously. Suspension There are two low-speed chicanes (Turns 1-2 and 4-5) where the kerbs are used heavily, so a softer suspension setup with longer travel is preferable for these. However, there is also the higher speed, 3rd-4th gear Ascari chicane (Turns 8-9-10) where a stiffer setup with sharper change of direction is preferable due to its higher speed and lack of kerb usage. Tyres

Due to the higher speeds seen at Monza there may be some specific limitations on inflation pressures and camber settings. This is not uncommon for Monza and is just another factor in making this circuit such a unique challenge. Front wing Just as for the rear wing, a bespoke low drag and low downforce front wing is produced for Monza. This really is the home of speed! Engine Monza is very much a power circuit, with its long straights meaning that a significant portion of the lap is spent at full throttle. It’s not just all out power that’s required however, with power delivery exiting the corners on to the straights also important.

THE Circuit Turn 1 The fastest part of the track, with speeds of around 340kmh, before braking hard for the slowest part of the circuit- the Rettifilo chicane which has a minimum speed of around 75km/h. The kerbs are used extensively here as drivers aim to find the shortest line through this tricky right- left combination. Turn 2 Good power delivery on exiting the chicane is essential as the drivers accelerate hard through Curva Biassono; a good

slipstreaming opportunity heading into the next complex. Turns 4-5 Heavy kerb usage through the Turn 4-5 chicane, which the cars approach at 330km/h before braking down to around 120km/h. Turns 6-7 The Lesmo curves are approached at over 260km/h, with a minumum corner speed of around 180km/h in Lesmo 2. Good car control is required though this trick double right-hander due to the lower than optimum levels of downforce used at this circuit. Turns 8-10 Variante Ascari is a fast third and fourth gear chicane, but unlike the previous chicanes around the track there is no kerb usage. The cars approach this complex at around 330km/h with a minimum speed of around 170km/h in the first left hand turn; a spectacular part of the circuit where bravery from the drivers is very much rewarded. Turn 11 The second fastest part of the track – with around 335km/h reached before braking to around 215km/h at the slowest part of the corner – it’s crucial to stay close to the car ahead through Parabolica to be positioned for a pass on the following straight.

THE BAGMAN’s SAY... Last weekend’s Italian Grand Prix showed that although the big three teams - Red Bull, McLaren and Ferrari - have asserted their authority over the field during recent events, anyone can still be caught out by the sensitivity of the tyres in qualifying. For Sebastian Vettel to take 20 points out of Fernando Alonso’s championship lead was an incredible result after a poor qualifying and bad start saw the German head into Turn 1 running outside the top 15. Vettel won in Monza last year utilising a high-downforce rear-wing that enabled him to take pole and scoot away in the early laps. Such a decision would likely be a huge gamble this year however, where the pole-sitter will largely be anyone’s guess.

A difficult run of races for Jenson Button came to an end in spectacular fashion at Spa, where the Briton’s seemingly miniscule championship hopes were revitalised with a dominant victory. The circus now heads to a circuit on which Button has finished second for the last two years. Team-mate Lewis Hamilton meanwhile heads to Italy looking to forget not only the first corner accident that took him out of the Belgian Grand Prix, but also the pre-race Twitter scandal he created by posting team data on the social media site. While rumours linking Hamilton to Mercedes this week may also prove unsettling, the 2008 World Champion should prove tough to beat around Monza regardless.

THE BAGMAN’s SAY... Fernando Alonso has repeatedly attempted to play down the performance of his Ferrari in recent weeks, underlining his belief that the F2012 remains the slowest of the title contending cars. The Italian machines certainly didn’t look stellar in practice and qualifying at Spa, while the first corner crash continued Alonso’s poor record in Belgium, and robbed us of further insight into Ferrari’s true position following the mid-season break. Massa’s fifth place finish however indicates that Alonso would have been well in contention for a podium. Scoring victory against the Red Bulls and four Mercedes powered cars will be difficult this weekend, but just as one should never underestimate Alonso, Ferrari’s ‘home ground’ form is often something a little out of the ordinary.

THE BAGMAN’s SAY... Mercedes endured what was arguably their worst weekend of the season at Spa. Neither driver managed to make Q3 on Saturday, effectively ending the team’s hopes of a strong finish before the Grand Prix even began. The team could play a significant role in the outcome of this weekend’s race however if they manage to qualify in the top 10 mix. Last year’s Italian Grand Prix saw the characteristically stout straight-line speed of the Mercedes create somewhat of a roadblock for those behind. Seeing either Nico Rosberg or Michael Schumacher on the podium however appears unlikely.

The situation effectively leaves the team with one car, as reserve driver Jerome D’Ambrosio faces a major challenge to get up to speed in a car that he has only driven on a handful of occasions. Kimi Raikkonen meanwhile is again optimistic of victory, despite again falling short of the target at Spa. The Finn now has six podiums for the year however, and sits just one point behind third-placed Mark Webber in the points standings. Meanwhile, the team has confirmed that it will not run its double-DRS system this weekend as it continues to work on the Mercedes-pioneered concept.

THE BAGMAN’s SAY... Force India’s traditionally strong form on the lower downforce venues continued last weekend at Spa, where Nico Hulkenberg handed the team a season-best finish of fourth. Hulkenberg and team-mate Paul di Resta both benefited from the first corner clash to sit third and fourth respectively in the early going, before the Scot’s chances faded with a KERS problem. Di Resta managed to wrestle home a point regardless, leaving both drivers relatively confident of adding further to their tallies this weekend. The qualifying battle between the pair will again be something to watch, with Di Resta levelling the score at six each with his Q3-worthy effort at Spa.

THE BAGMAN’s SAY... Sauber will head to the Italian Grand Prix looking to avenge what was a cruel twist of fate for the small Swiss outfit at Spa. Kamui Kobayashi put a non-BMW entered Sauber on the front-row of a Formula 1 grid for the first time since 1999, with team-mate Sergio Perez starting just two places further back on row two. Both were effectively eliminated however in the first turn fracas. For a team that has traditionally qualified poorly and fought through the field in the races this season, the series of events was particularly galling. Scoring the team’s third podium of the season doesn’t appear to be out of the question for either driver this weekend.

THE BAGMAN’s SAY... Toro Rosso made the most of the Spa carnage to take a double points finish - the first time either of its drivers had scored a top 10 since the second race of the season. Jean-Eric Vergne was the standout performer, outqualifying and out-racing team-mate Daniel Ricciardo. While Monza will always hold special memories for the team given it was the venue in which Sebastian Vettel took its first and so far only race win in 2008, expecting more points this weekend would be highly optimistic.

THE BAGMAN’s SAY... The only thing more difficult to predict that the form of the midfield teams this season has unarguably been the curious driving habits of Pastor Maldonado. The Venezuelan qualified an excellent third at Spa, extending his run of Q3 appearances to five in succession. His qualifying session however also included a three-spot penalty for impeding another driver, while a jump start and the rear-ending of Timo Glock’s Marussia attracted a further two reprimands (five place grid penalties at Monza for each offense). Not a bad effort for five laps work. Bruno Senna meanwhile left Spa with the fastest lap of the race but another poor qualifying performance - and a puncture - put paid to a result. It’s hard to see Williams adding to its points tally this weekend.

It’s usual trump card, Heikki Kovalainen, endured an uncharacteristic early spin, while a latter pit incident with Narain Karthikeyan’s HRT ruined his day for good. The team’s DRS and KERS systems should at least see Caterham further ahead of its traditional rear-of-grid rivals HRT and Marussia this weekend.

Pedro de la Rosa put in a commendable performance to out-qualify Charles Pic’s Marussia at Spa, and is optimistic that the wide-open spaces of Monza will again see his HRT competitive against the Russian-owned squad. The Spanish veteran will also celebrate his 100th Grand Prix appearance this weekend - a tally that will be reached more than 13 years after making his debut with Arrows. The team’s Chinese test driver Ma Qing Hua, meanwhile, will drive one of the team’s cars on a Grand Prix weekend for the very first time when he takes the wheel of Narain Karthikeyan’s entry in Free Practice 1. The 24-year-old Ma’s only previous taste of Formula 1 machinery came at the Silverstone Young Driver Test earlier this year.
