Six different winners in the first six races has left many wondering when the true pecking order for the 2012 season will emerge. The past 62 seasons of the World Championship have frequently seen the pendulum swing between teams during the year, but never to this extent. While the source of the unpredictability has been widely claimed to be the sensitive nature of the Pirelli tyres, it should be noted that the rubber is merely the icing on a cake that has been in the making for some time. The fact that the performance gap between the teams is so small this year is the reason that the way the teams are ‘switching the tyres on’ during qualifying and the races is proving so vital. Even last year, those at the front of the field would lose minimal positions if caught out by (for example) an unforseen change in track temperature during qualifying. With just 0.5s separating the top 10 in Q2 last time out in Monaco, the line between hero and zero is finer than ever. The most obvious explanation for the year-on-year compression of the field is of course the removal of the blown diffuser systems. For much of the last two seasons, it was those undercar systems separating the midfielders from the front of the pack. Aerodynamics has, after all, been the dominant factor in car performance for more than a decade - an area made all the more important by the continual narrowing of other development avenues such as engine performance. What does this all mean for the rest of the 2012 season? Well, maybe there will not be a pecking order, in the traditional sense of the term, this year after all. As the intra-team battles at both Ferrari and McLaren have proven, the days of team-mates lining up side-by-side all the way down the grid appears to well and truly be a thing of the past.

As the Formula 1 circus packed up on the Sunday night of the 2012 season opener in Australia, McLaren was undoubtedly the team to beat. Following a strong pre-season, the Wokingbased squad locked out the front-row of the Albert Park grid before securing first and third in the race. Jenson Button was practically aglow following his third AGP win in four years, while Lewis Hamilton was clearly upset having only finished third following an ill-timed Safety Car intervention.

Fast-forward five races and the team heads to the Canadian Grand Prix having failed to add to its win tally. Perhaps more remarkably, Hamilton and Button sit just fourth and seventh in the championship standings, with the latter a full 31 points adrift of leader Fernando Alonso. The closeness of the 2012 field may have seen no repeat winners in the first six races, but the slide down the points table for both McLaren drivers is evidence that the squad has failed to deliver on its early promise. Unfortunately for Hamilton, the race-pace from his MP4-26 has simply not been fast enough. Third place finishes in each of

the first three Grands Prix appeared to be the maximum that could be achieved, while extreme tyre degradation (Bahrain), a fuelling mistake in qualifying (Spain) have combined with pitstop issues to keep the Briton off the podium in each of the last three events. Five top-two qualifying performances not a single top-two finish at least shows that Hamilton has given himself every chance at scoring top results. For Button on the other hand it’s been a very different story. The 2009 World Champion has failed to even make it into Q3 in each of the last two races, leaving him with a qualifying average of 6.3 for the season to date. With Hamilton at 1.8 (based on qualifying positions, not actual

penalty-effected starting positions), the gap between the two is the third largest in the field. Only at Ferrari (Fernando Alonso on 8.0 and Felipe Massa on 13.0) and Williams (Pastor Maldonado on 10.0 and Bruno Senna on 14.7) are the averages further apart. The poor qualifying runs have combined with a crash in Malaysia and a mechanical failure in Bahrain to leave Button a long way from the points lead he enjoyed after Albert Park. Heading to this weekend’s Canandian Grand Prix, the Briton admits that sorting his Saturday woes will be vital.

Button’s win last year came in extraordinary circumstances, with a last-lap pass on Sebastian Vettel completing a drive that had seen the McLaren rise from last place at the halfway point. A series of incidents had peppered the open phase of Button’s afternoon - a clash with Hamilton that ended his teammate’s race among them.

“This weekend it’s going to be important to get a handle on the car in qualifying,” says Button.

“My win there last year was one of those rare occasions when everything just came right,” reflects Button. “It’s still hard to believe that I was running in last place past half-distance and yet still managed to come through and take victory on the final lap. The memories of that win will always be with me.

“At the last two races, Q2 hasn’t gone my way, so, no matter what pace you have in the race, you’re still compromised on Sunday afternoon, particularly as the pack is so tightly bunched at the moment. My aim for the weekend will be to have a stronger qualifying performance and to be able to build on that in the race.”

“Montreal is always a race I look forward to anyway. The city has such a great vibe to it, the people are friendly and extremely welcoming and the fans are incredibly passionate. It’s the perfect place to go racing and you can feel the excitement building literally as soon as you step off the plane.”

the first of his Grand Prix career. A second Montreal victory three years later was also highly memorable - the day’s chaotic race proving the catalyst for the move to the current fast-wearing Pirelli tyres. While the last three races have seen Hamilton grow increasingly frustrated with his team, the 27-year-old is optimistic that the Canadian Grand Prix will mark a turning point in the season. “I know that the results we all want will soon come to us,” says Hamilton. “I am doing everything I can to extract every tenth from the car, and I know that the guys at the track and the men and women back at MTC are doing everything they can to give me a car that’s worthy of winning. We are still very much in the hunt for this world championship. “On paper, I think our car will be well-suited to the circuit. We showed in Spain that we’re very good in high-speed corners, but we were also quick in the final sector, which is slower and more technical. Of course, it’s still difficult to accurately predict the outcome, so I’ll be focusing on another clean weekend where I can score more consistent world championship points.”

THE CAR Rear wing A different family of rear wing is unleashed for Montreal as the layout requires a low to medium downforce package, away from the higher downforce configurations of previous circuits so far this year. The effect of DRS on lap time here is larger than at the higher downforce tracks. Brakes The demands on brakes are far higher here than at any other track, and a lot of Friday running will be dedicated to monitoring brake temperatures to evaluate and simulate race performance.

Pirelli compounds. The track surface is smooth, though not as smooth as Monaco. There are relatively low energies going through the tyres, although the potential ambient temperature can range from 15C to 35C which affects performance. Front wing As with the rear wing, lower downforce is required than at previous venues as part of the low to medium downforce package. Engine It’s quite a harsh circuit for the engine, with long periods spent at full throttle accelerating out of the slow corners and along the straights. It is not a particularly severe layout for the gearbox however.

THE Circuit

Suspension The track layout means a compromise of running the car as soft as you dare to be able to ride the kerbs, without making it too soft to be able to change direction quickly for the many chicanes.

Turns 1 & 2 Braking from over 300kph into the slow combination of Turns 1 and 2 has seen some great wheel to wheel action over the years. A crucial corner, especially on the opening lap.

Tyres This will be the second race where we see the combination of soft and super soft

Turns 3 & 4 A fast right-left chicane, where the drivers need to ride the kerbs for the quickest line.

Turn 6 & 7 Another chicane, this time left-right and much lower speed than the first, with the drivers needing to ride the kerbs once again for the fastest route. Turn 8 A 300kph+ straight leads into a third chicane, right-left once more, which requires quick direction change and good kerb riding capabilities from the car. Turn 10 Famous for brave moves, in some cases too brave, Turn 10 provides another heavy braking area from around 300kph to around 100kph. Turn 13 The fastest section of the track with maximum speeds of around 330kph followed by heavy braking, and a need to ride the kerbs heavily through the chicane. The exit of the second part of the chicane is bordered by the famous ‘wall of champions’ which has caught out many championship winning drivers over the years.

THE BAGMAN’s SAY... Red Bull Racing became the first team to take two wins this season thanks to Mark Webber’s performance last time out in Monaco. The squad may have endured its slowest start to a campaign in three years, but two wins from the last three races has seen its drivers both move to within three points of the Drivers’ title lead. Montreal, however, is one of the few circuits to the team is yet to win on - the street layout having somewhat marginalised the raw downforce advantage that the team has carried through the last two seasons. Despite its claims, no longer being allowed to use the floor it debuted in Bahrain may also make victory here a tough prospect.

THE BAGMAN’s SAY... Lewis Hamilton’s strong qualifying pace this season means that the McLaren driver will once again enter this weekend’s race amongst the favourites for victory. While Montreal has traditionally been one of the easier circuits to pass on, clean air has repeatedly proven vital for preserving rubber and hence maintaining lap speed this season. A return to the podium for Hamilton will require the team to eradicate the pitlane errors that have dogged the 2008 World Champion in recent races. Jenson Button meanwhile must improve his qualifying performances if he is to be a factor in a dry race.

THE BAGMAN’s SAY... Fernando Alonso has earmarked this weekend’s race as a true test of whether he is a genuine contender for the 2012 title. The Spaniard has defied all predictions by leading the championship after six races - adding podium finishes in each of the last two events to his sensational victory in Malaysia. The Ferrari package proved particularly weak in the areas of traction and top speed at the beginning of the season - both of which are ultra-important characteristics in Montreal. Even if those factors conspire to keep Alonso out of the top five in qualifying, the double-World Champion cannot be counted out of a top three finish having only once failed to improve on his qualifying position during the first six races.

THE BAGMAN’s SAY... Expect to see both Nico Rosberg and Michael Schumacher contend for the win in Montreal, especially if low ambient conditions prevail. Both drivers were in impressive form on the streets of Monte Carlo, with Schumacher brilliantly topping qualifying for the first time since making his comeback. While the German’s weekend again went pear-shaped with a mechanical issue in the race, Schumacher has seven previous Canadian Grand Prix victories to his name, and was very strong on Sunday afternoon here last year. Rosberg meanwhile started and finished second in Monaco, and is sure the Montreal layout will suit the W03 that has already taken him to one victory this season.

THE BAGMAN’s SAY... Both Kimi Raikkonen and Romain Grosjean appeared to be knocking on the door of victory in Bahrain and Spain prior to the team’s tough run in Monaco. Grosjean’s race in the principality ended on the way to the first corner, while Raikkonen suffered from surprisingly high tyre degredation. Although the latter could indicate that the E20 reacts poorly to the Super Soft tyre (which will also be seen in Canada), most are expecting the team to be back in the hunt this weekend. The track layout should suit the team’s car, which has generally proven to have a greater temperature working range than the Mercedes.

THE BAGMAN’s SAY... Having scored points in five of the season’s first six races, Force India has proven that its VJM05 package is good enough to sneak into the points on a regular basis. While the team has designs on repeating the podium efforts of fellow midfield squads Sauber and Williams, a lack of a single top five finish from either Nico Hulkenberg and Paul di Resta thus far indicates that such results are somewhat optimistic. Qualifying speed continues to prove an issue, with both drivers averaging seventh row starts. Points are a strong possibility again this weekend however, with Saturday’s order likely to indicate just how many are achievable.

Sauber was uncharacteristically bullish on its chances prior to Monaco, but found itself with a shocking weekend that saw both drivers miss Q3 on Saturday and the points on Sunday. In truth, the team never really got to show its true form on the street circuit, with Sergio Perez having what was believed to be a failureinduced crash during qualifying, and Kamui Kobayashi out of the race thanks to the opening turn pile-up. This weekend will mark Perez’s first proper look at the Montreal circuit having missed the race last year due to injuries sustained in Monaco.

Toro Rosso has now gone four races without scoring a single point - leaving the Italian squad languishing down in ninth in the Constructors’ Championship, a full 22 points behind eighthplaced Force India. On the whole, qualifying speed has let the team down across the early part of the season, with Daniel Ricciardo’s stunning Bahrain effort the only time either driver has started on the first seven rows since Albert Park. Unlike Monaco, both drivers are relatively unfamiliar with the Montreal circuit, which will provide an extra challenge before qualifying.

THE BAGMAN’s SAY... Williams came back to earth with a thud in Monaco following the heights of Pastor Maldonado’s Spanish Grand Prix victory. The team insists that its lack of results disguised its true performance, with a grid penalty awarded to Maldonado for an infringement in FP3 clearly not helping the Venezuelan’s cause. Both drivers will be firmly shooting for points finishes in Canada. A 10th place in Monaco provided Bruno Senna with his third points finish of the season - again emphasising that the Brazilian’s race performances are far superior to his qualifying efforts.

THE BAGMAN’s SAY... Caterham heads to Canada on somewhat of a high after Heikki Kovalainen’s performance in Monaco. The Finn’s 13th place run was achieved after holding McLaren’s Jenson Button at bay for a large portion of the race, and saw the team move past Marussia for 10th in the Constructors’ Championship. Expectations must be kept in check for this weekend however, with Monaco’s tough-topass nature contrasting sharply with Montreal. Taking advantage of other’s mistakes in Q1 and benefitting from attrition in the race are still the team’s best shots at scoring strong results.

THE BAGMAN’s SAY... Pedro de la Rosa may have retired on the opening corner of the Monaco Grand Prix, but the weekend can still be considered HRT’s most encouraging of the campaign so far. The Spaniard had genuinely out-qualified Charles Pic’s Marussia for the first time all season - the veteran’s Q1 effort proving just 0.1s shy of Timo Glock. Q1 in Canada is again set to be an interesting battle between the two KERS-less squads, while the gap between de la Rosa and team-mate Narain Karthikeyan - which grew to 1.2s in Monaco - will as always be something to look out for.

Marussia’s focus in Canada should be on making sure both of its cars make it through the weekend without a repeat of the reliability glitches that have popped up from time to time across the opening six weekends. The issues have particularly hurt rookie Charles Pic, who will again have a new circuit to learn this in Montreal. Losing 10th in the Constructors’ standings to Caterham in Monaco was a bitter pill to swallow as a front-wing problem for Timo Glock denied the German the chance to make the most of Heikki Kovalainen’s own late-race troubles. Reversing the switch appears unlikely barring a race of extremely high attrition.
