Round 6 - Monaco I Introduction
Monaco madness monaco EDITOR: Stefan Bartholomaeus DESIGN: Kirstie Fuentes SALES/MARKETING: Leisa Emberson IMAGES: Red Bull Racing McLaren Ferrari Mercedes Lotus Force India Sauber Toro Rosso Williams Caterham HRT Marussia PARTNERS:
The Monaco Grand Prix has turned up plenty of surprising results in its long and oft-celebrated history. The demanding street course has been the sole scene of success for one-time Grand Prix winners Jean-Pierre Beltoise, Olivier Panis and Jarno Trulli, and has shocked the likes of Stirling Moss, Jack Brabham, Ayrton Senna and Michael Schumacher, who have all crashed out of the Monaco Grand Prix while leading comfortably. The circuit has, like the cars themselves, evolved greatly over time, but continues to provide unique challenges that can lead to upset results. Even last year, Sebastian Vettel’s victory came very much against-the-odds following an early race gaff that saw his Red Bull crew fit the wrong tyres to the World Champion’s RB7. On any other track it would have ended Vettel’s chances of victory, but a well-timed Safety Car, some stern blocking and a fortuitous red flag conspired to see the German home. Fast-forward 12 months and Monaco’s usual ability to add spice to an F1 season may well go unnoticed. Following five races of fluctuating fortunes for all of the top teams, a true pecking order still has not been established. Seven teams - McLaren, Ferrari, Mercedes, Red Bull, Williams, Lotus and Sauber - have all shown that they have the potential to win races so far this season if the conditions suit them. It’ll certainly be hard to pick a surprising result this weekend given the lack of concrete expectations. What more drama could Monaco possibly add to such a tumultuous season?

Round 6 - Monaco I Cover Story
The real deal? Maldonado heads for Monaco After a mixed bag of results across the opening four races, the Spanish Grand Prix was meant to be the one where everything would finally make sense. A long-time favourite location for testing, the Catalunya circuit’s layout places a major emphasis on aerodynamic performance. Put simply, it’s where the good cars shine and the bad cars slump. The success of Williams and Pastor Maldonado in the Spanish Grand Prix was as convincing as it was surprising. For a team that hadn’t won a race in eight years and a driver who’d been labelled as little more than a financial asset since he arrived in F1 last year, it was a mighty performance. The question begging to be answered this weekend in Monaco is whether Venezuela’s only Grand Prix winner can again trouble the front-runners.
The then-reigning GP2 champion ran amongst the point scorers for the majority of the day before finding himself the victim of one of Lewis Hamilton’s robust overtaking manoeuvres in the closing stages. Sixth place turned into 18th, but a marker had at least been laid. Perhaps even more pertinently, the FW34’s strongest sector last time out in Barcelona was the third one, where lowspeed mechanical grip and power-down performance really counted. Williams’ switch to Renault engines - which have shone in Monaco over recent years - for 2012 undoubtedly played its part in that. Although unwilling to make bold predictions, Maldonado describes his attitude heading into the weekend as one of confidence. “Our package is definitely getting better and although we don’t have the quickest car right now, we are improving very quickly,” he says. “I have always liked Monaco and I am certainly full of confidence (ahead of the weekend).”
While the relative competitiveness of the top teams has fluctuated wildly so far this season, there are several signs that indicate Maldonado will be a genuine contender again in Monaco.
Williams’ progress hasn’t come overnight. The building blocks for the droughtbreaking win were put in place midway through last year, where decisions to change the team’s technical structure, topend staff and engine supplier were made.
Firstly, Maldonado himself has repeatedly shown a special affinity with the streets of the principality. Having taken two firsts and two seconds from his four GP2 Feature Race starts in Monaco, the street course was the scene of Maldonado’s most impressive performance during his rookie F1 campaign last year.
Out went technical director Sam Michael and head of aerodynamics Jon Tomlinson, and in swept Mike Coughlan (technical director), Mark Gillian (operations engineer) and Jason Sommerville (aerodynamics). Coughlan spent the second half of 2011 focussed solely on this year’s car, while Gillian’s role sees him take
responsibility for the trackside operations of the team - effectively removing part of the load normally borne by the technical director. According to Maldonado, the changes within the team have combined well with improvements in his own driving. “Our new technical team seem to be making a very positive impact already,” says Maldonado of the rapid progress from 2011, where only five points were scored by the Grove outfit all season. “I also have more experience now compared to last year and this is certainly helping me. I don’t think there is one single thing that has led us to improve this year, but a number of little changes that when put together have made us more competitive on track.” And what of the pay-driver slurs? It’s no secret that Maldonado’s rise to the top of the sport has been made possible through sponsorships from his native Venezuela. The large signage spruiking Venezuela’s national oil and gas company PVDSA is evidence of that. “I am very lucky to have such amazing support from Venezuela,” he says. “The finances I can bring have helped me reach Formula One but also help develop the car and that is crucial in being successful. “I don’t focus on these comments, preferring to do my talking on the track and do the best job I can for the team. Hopefully my performance in Spain has shown that I have the talent to be one of the best drivers.”

Round 6 - Monaco I Track Details
Circuit de Monaco Technical preview with Lotus F1’s trackside operations director Alan Permane
THE CAR Rear wing We will have a Monaco-specific ‘big’ rear wing to gain more downforce at the slower overall speeds we see here. Brakes Brakes are not a big concern. It’s only low speed so you’re not braking significantly as you would from a long straight into a first gear corner, and it’s also a shorter race than most, so wear is not an issue. You need to monitor temperature because there aren’t high speed sections to cool down the brakes and the relentless stop / start nature can compound heat generation. Suspension Monaco has the greatest undulations relative to any other circuit, so you need a soft car which allows the tyres to be on the tarmac as much as possible. This means softer roll bars and springs, with the aim of maximising mechanical grip without losing too much aerodynamic grip. Tyres This will be the first time we see Pirelli’s red-marked supersoft tyre at a race. We’ll also run the soft compound. Tyre wear is very low here, due to the smooth track surface and low speed layout.
Front wing Front downforce is very important here and we run maximum front wing with more balance to the front because of the understeer inducing characteristics of the circuit. Engine You need an engine with very good response. Rather than ultimate power being the goal; drivability is king. You’ll never go slower with more power, but it’s the least power sensitive circuit of the year. The engine also spends a relatively short amount of time at full throttle so the challenge is to deliver torque through the lower rev limits of the engine. However, as Monaco is a bumpy street track, the engine needs a good limiter setting so it is capable of digesting all the bumps. Fuel consumption also needs to be worked out accurately as the track gets quicker and quicker over the week-end.
THE CIRCUIT Turn 1 The first corner is very tight and has been the scene of many incidents over the years. The drivers need to keep their wits about them to avoid any drama. Turns 4 & 5 The bumpy track between turns four and five means that the drivers need to modify their
line to avoid unsettling their car unduly. Turn 6 The slowest corner on the circuit, and of the entire season. Suspension and steering mods have to be made to the car just to make it through this turn. Turn 9 Taken flat out, the tunnel is the fastest part of the track. The contrast of natural, artificial, then natural light is a big challenge for the drivers. Track temperature is also different from the rest of the circuit. Turn 10 Exiting the tunnel into the chicane is the scene of many out-braking manoeuvres. An opportunity to pressurise the car ahead, but a place where mistakes are often seen. Turn 14 The Swimming Pool, ‘La Piscine’, is entered very quickly, before braking hard for turn 15. Turn 18 Turn 18, La Rascasse, is the second slowest part of the circuit with the cars running very close to the inside wall. Start-finish straight A good exit is essential leading on to the start finish straight. High traction demands here.

THE BAGMAN’s SAY... Red Bull Racing will attempt to take its third consecutive Monaco victory this weekend following the success of Mark Webber in 2010 and Sebastian Vettel in 2011. Previous circuit form has proven to mean little this year however, with Barcelona a clear case in point for this team. Coupling poor qualifying (12th and eighth respectively) with front-wing problems meant neither were a contender during the race. Although unwise to completely rule Vettel out of victory calculations, the German has just one top five qualifying effort so far this year - a trait that could make things very difficult on the streets of Monte Carlo.

THE BAGMAN’s SAY... Lewis Hamilton is yet to win a Grand Prix this season, but a mistake-free run here may well provide the Briton with his first big trophy of the campaign. The McLaren was quick in the Spanish Grand Prix, with Hamilton finishing eighth despite starting 24th (due to his disqualification from qualifying) and losing time with yet another pitstop issue in the race. McLaren heads into the weekend confident it has sorted its pit dramas, and has two drivers who know how to win around Monaco. Both should start near or at the front, making them definite contenders for the race.

THE BAGMAN’s SAY... While Williams stole the show in Barcelona, the performance of Fernando Alonso’s Ferrari over the Spanish Grand Prix weekend was barely any less remarkable than that of Pastor Maldonado’s Williams. Alonso had played down the immediate effect that the latest round of upgrades would have on the troublesome F2012, but second on both the grid and the final podium indicated gains had been made. Improving your season best grid position by a whole seven places doesn’t happen every race... Alonso already has two Monaco trophies in his cabinet, and while it is unlikely that the Ferrari will be the best car on the tight street layout, a victory is far from out of the question.

THE BAGMAN’s SAY... This weekend will truly test how far Mercedes has come in the last 12 months. The 2011 Monaco Grand Prix saw the Mercedes duo competitive during the opening laps before quickly falling away with severe rear tyre degradation. Michael Schumacher has been highly critical of the current generation of Pirelli tyres and how big an effect they have on the racing. It’s been a horror start to the campaign for the seventime World Champion, who sits just 18th in the championship with a best finish of 10th so far. A five-place grid penalty here (for a hit on Bruno Senna in Barcelona) may put paid to chances of major improvement.

THE BAGMAN’s SAY... An incorrect tyre strategy saw Lotus fail to capitalise on its Sunday morning status of favourites for the Spanish Grand Prix, but don’t expect to see the same mistake made this weekend. The E20 has arguably been the most consistent car across all track conditions experienced during the opening five races, with either Kimi Raikkonen or Romain Grosjean qualifying in the top five for every race outside of Bahrain, where both shone on Sunday. Both drivers will fancy their chances of another podium here - repeating Robert Kubica’s feat for the team of 2010. Like Barcelona, victory should again be the target.

THE BAGMAN’s SAY... Nico Hulkenberg added further to Force India’s 2012 points tally with a 10th place finish in Barcelona, but repeating the feat will not prove easy this weekend. Qualifying has not been the VJM05’s strong point thus far in the campaign, with Paul di Resta’s average finish of 9.8 almost a full four places better than his qualifying average. Even in the topsy-turvy Pirelli and DRS era, the tight streets of Monte Carlo will always tend to favour those who qualify well, so making the leap into Q3 will be important.

THE BAGMAN’s SAY... A return to Monaco marks a return to the scene of Sergio Perez’s horrific qualifying accident last year - one which kept the Mexican out of two races. Perez says he returns to the circuit stronger this time around and, truth be told, so does his team. The Sauber C31 has already made five trips to the points this year, and it can be expected that the team will add to that tally this weekend. Kamui Kobayashi finished fifth last year in the squad’s sole entry in the race, and with the driver generally accepted to play a bigger role here than at any other circuit, the hard charging Japanese says a podium is possible.

THE BAGMAN’s SAY... Daniel Ricciardo could be one to watch this weekend. It may be Ricciardo’s first visit to Monaco as a Formula 1 driver, but the Australian heads into this year’s race off the back of victories in the hotly contested Formula Renault 3.5 races around the streets of the principality during 2010 and 2011. Having driven the first practice session in Monaco last year with Toro Rosso will also help Ricciardo in the battle with team-mate Jean-Eric Vergne, who enters the weekend still marginally ahead on points courtesy of his strategy-assisted run in Malaysia.

THE BAGMAN’s SAY... All eyes will be on Williams this weekend as it aims to repeat Pastor Maldonado’s stunning Spanish Grand Prix victory. Maldonado forged a strong record in Monaco during his time in GP2, and was impressive in his first Formula 1 outing here last year. The Williams’ strong Sector 3 performance in Barcelona will have the team optimistic of being highly competitive on the tight Monaco streets, although qualifying remains the biggest concern. Maldonado’s performance on Saturday in Spain yielded just the team’s second Q3 run of the season so far. A similarly strong qualifying run is a prerequisite for Monaco success.

THE BAGMAN’s SAY... Monaco’s usually high attrition rate could provide Caterham with an opportunity to retake 10th in the Constructors’ Championship from fellow minnows Marussia. Jarno Trulli and Heikki Kovalainen finished 13th and 14th respectively in Monaco last year, which would prove to be the team’s best outing of the season. Kovalainen can also be considered a chance to repeat his Bahrain qualifying performance by making Q2. The Caterham is unlikely to have the raw pace to do so, but could sneak in thanks to the efforts of the underrated Finn and the potential misfortune of others.

Stainless Steel Security Screens & Doors “Beat more burglars with the only security mesh that uses Screw-Clamp™ technology.” Crimsafe uses high tensile 304 grade 0.9mm stainless steel. All of our doors and windows feature the unique Crimsafe Screw-Clamp™ technology. Tamper resistant screws go through a metal clamp, then through the Tensile Tuff™ mesh and finally they’re driven right into the frame to hold the mesh in a vice-like grip which gives the door enormous strength against attack.

THE BAGMAN’s SAY... HRTs drivers will head to Monaco expecting to be a little closer, in terms of time rather than position, to the front-runners due to the circuit’s lack of dependence on raw downforce. The team has moved into its new Madrid headquarters in recent weeks - a move it says is key to its future. Team principal Luis Perez-Sala has, however, played down its chances of leap-frogging Marussia in the 2012 pecking order. Issues for Timo Glock in Bahrain qualifying continues to represent the only time that either HRT driver has qualified off the back row all season.

THE BAGMAN’s SAY... Like Caterham and HRT, Marussia will undoubtedly see Monaco as a chance to survive the mayhem and secure a mid-teens result. Additionally, the circuit’s reputation of allowing more influence from the driver than any other will make it a true test of Charles Pic’s progress. The young Frenchman has largely impressed so far with his competitiveness compared with experienced team-mate Timo Glock, and the German will be eager to put a sizeable margin on the rookie in qualifying. This intra-team battle should be one of the more interesting aspects of Q1.
